Good luck Mr. Steele. You’re going to need it to rebuild this broken party. Go back to the basics. Work on the ground game. Work the Internet.

But most of all focus on what should have been strengths of the RNC and the GOP in general - national security, economic policy, and energy policy.

29 Occasional Reader  Fri, Jan 30, 2009 1:14:28pm

Plus, “Michael Steele” is such a perfect, straight-out-of-Central-Casting name for a US President. Doubtless when he gets to the Oval Office, he’ll name Dirk Pitt as his National Security Advisor.

Steele should look into getting Flip to work for him.

Just how big is the stimulus porkfest? Huge. Take the biggest spending programs in our nation’s history (louisiana purchase, race to moon, new deal) and combine ‘em all. That begins to approach what the porkfest is going to cost. Or, it’s going to cost more than the combined new deal and the iraq war would cost (and the iraq war costs are based on the critics’ figures, not what it actually runs since they’re conflating standard operating costs of the US military with the iraq operation).

This is interesting.
The US expects Israel to “make peace” and give it’s security concerns over to the PA. However, the US doesn’t trust the PA with the extra 20 million dollars it’s giving the Palestinians. The US trusts UNRWA more than the PA!

QUESTION: Robert, on this – still on the Middle East. When the President was here last week introducing Senator Mitchell, he made some reference to – about how U.S. money – U.S. assistance to the Palestinians would go through the Palestinian Authority. This money, $20.3 million from today, is going to UNRWA and OCHA and ICRC.

MR. WOOD: Mm-hmm.

QUESTION: Has there been a decision made not to funnel money through the Palestinian – not funding money for Gaza though the PA?

MR. WOOD: Well, right now, this particular amount of money that Senator Mitchell announced earlier today is going to UNRWA, ICRC, other organizations, because they are the primary conduits of assistance to the Palestinians. At some point, with regard to the Palestinian Authority, we hope to be able to do that. But at this point, with regard to this amount of money right now, that’s going through those organizations that I mentioned.

It might still get shot down. Its chances of Senate passage seem uncertain. Anyone with a Senator they can get to oppose it should contact said Senator now. Let’s make sure Obama loses this vote.

Not necessarily. He needs to get experience, national exposure, and work on his own ground game, and heading up the RNC lets him do all three.

He’d have to resign in order to run, though. No way they’d let a sitting party chairman run for president at the same time, because there’d be no way to separate party expenditures from campaign expenditures.

Market update:

The Dow finished down 1.82%. the S&P down 2.28%.

Declining issues led gainers by a ratio of almost 3 to 1.

Since Obama was sworn in the S&P is down 3% and the Dow is down 3.4%.

The S&P dropped 8.6% for the month, it’s worst January on record.

In good news, the NYT stock price dropped to within 2 cents of its 52 week low, closing at $4.97 a share.

Also:

Gannett to take charge of up to $5.2 billion

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Gannett Co., the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, said Friday that it will take non-cash charges of as much as $5.2 billion against financial results for the fourth quarter, as a number of its assets have diminished in value because of the worldwide financial crisis.

On a preliminary basis, the publisher of USA Today and owner of 23 television stations said profit fell 36% to $158 million, or 69 cents a share, in the quarter ended Dec. 28, compared with net income of $245.3 million, or $1.06 a share, in the year-earlier period.

Get this, here’s one good reason for the drop in value for MSM entities:

Media companies are required to note the book value of their goodwill — a series of intangible assets such as brand names, mastheads, intellectual properties and subscriber lists.

Yes. Wouldn’t want to risk the briar patch, would we Brer’?
I want the Dems to loudly shout “House Negro” for 4 years.
If you were Obama, would you (a) defend Steele, or (b) remain silent?
Which would be worse?

I would probably invite him to the WH for a nice photo opp if I were Hussein, and then in a liberal white gathering trash him, lightly, as a sad attempt by Republicans to actually be in touch in the 21st century. If I was Steele I would be out and about in lilly white areas to show its about country and ideas not skin color.

“Goodwill” is not some newfangled idea; it’s been an accounting line item for many, many years. And there are multi-billion dollar companies whose principle asset is “goodwill”. For instance, prominent hotel chains. The most valuable thing “Four Seasons” has is their name.

I think it will be factor. Here’s a personal example. I voted for McCain in spite of Palin. Had he picked Romney, he may have won the election. My wife, who never votes Republican told me she might have voted for McCain if Palin weren’t in the “on deck” circle. Mac’s age scared the hell out of my wife and while she had doubts about Obama, she said she could never cast a vote that put Palin so close to the presidency when the guy at the top of the ticket might not last 4 years as CIC.

I will keep it short. Congratulations. As you know from past experience, the attack machine will come. You are an honorable man, and in my opinion, an excellent candidate for the position.

One issue that I find appalling, is how the party in power has managed to co-opt one of our greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln.

No doubts, I think you will do a good job where others tasked with this responsibility have failed.

Please bring us back to the party of Lincoln.

Good luck.

I know Sarah Palin has a lot of fans on the blog, and I do consider her a quality individual. But if the Republicans think she has a chance at the top of the ticket, I think they’re wrong. However, if over the next 2-3 years she shows me more than I have seen so far, I would at least consider her. But if the folksy, down to earth lady we saw in 2008 is the same one we see in the future, she has no shot and the Republicans need to understand that. Republicans need someone new that has NOT lost a national election. Even if you like Palin, the loss in 2008 taints her,

You’re probably right, even if the loss wasn’t her fault, but due to McCain throwing in the towel. She was still campaigning.

True. We’ll see how this progresses, but if I was in Steele’s new position, he first needs to focus on what the party is for and why that’s good for all Americans - regardless of their race, religion or current economic status.

Note to the Democratic National party, you can stop instructing your shills in the MSM to keep bashing the economy, your guy won.

All day long you read stories of the GDP dropping 3.8% and Obama talking about how the world is coming to an end, right?

But then, if you look long enough, you find this:

Oil rises after better-than-expected U.S. GDP data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Oil futures rose Friday after data showed that the U.S. economy, the world’s largest oil consumer, shrank less than the market had expected in the fourth quarter. The U.S. economy contracted at a 3.8% annualized rate, the worst in 28 years, the Commerce Department reported. But the drop was still above economists’ expectations of a 5.5% decline. Crude oil for March delivery ended up 24 cents, or 0.6%, at $41.68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier it rose more than 4% to $43.44.

Obviously this guy did not get the DNP talking points memo.

OTTAWA, January 25 (Itar-Tass) - Canada will grant 10 million dollars to finance UN efforts on detecting and ensuring security of storing dangerous radioactive materials in Russia and Ukraine, said Canadian Foreign Secretary Lawrence Cannon in a statement circulated here.
The secretary stressed that these programmes, aimed at preventing terrorists from laying hands on dangerous nuclear and radiological materials, are very important for the protection of Canada and international security. He added that Canada’s contribution is a confirmation of Kanada’s reliable partnership with the new US administration in ensuring security of North America through specific counter-terrorist measures and measures in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation.

However, if over the next 2-3 years she shows me more than I have seen so far, I would at least consider her. But if the folksy, down to earth lady we saw in 2008 is the same one we see in the future, she has no shot and the Republicans need to understand that. From the last Palin thread:

COURIC: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? … Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: Ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy–-Oh, it’s got to be about job creation too. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions.

Great. Tax reductions include reducing taxes. Moving right along…

She can spend the next four years memorizing rote responses to every possible inquiry, but someone whose off-the-cuff, unscripted answer to such a simple question is as incoherent, fumbling, nonsensical and beside the point as that one has no business within a thousand-mile radius of the White House. Palin may have charisma, but she’s a mental midget and in no way up to the job of President. The Democrats must love the news that she’s running - in fact, I’ll bet the DNC funnels a big chunk of money to her through front organizations. She would be Obama’s dream opponent.

People may wish to see in her a female Ronald Reagan, but that comparison is an insult to Reagan.

A lot can happen between now and 2012. Governor Palin is a smart woman. if she really wants to pursue the national stage, she will educate herself so she doesn’t make the smae mistakes as she did in 2008. I think that she initally wasn’t ready ready when selected for VP. her early interviews and actions weren’t very good and she tainted herself. “Michael Steele =Uncle Tom,Token,GOP Slave,House N E G R O.IT’S Going To Take More Than Him To Bring Blacks To The GOP Party.Speaking as a black person”

Well, given the history of the past 50 years or so, that poster is probably right about the choice of Steele not doing much to return black voters to the party.

Of course, what didn’t occur to that person is the fact that probably very few of the national committee members who voted for Steele even had that in mind.

That comment actually says more about Democrats than it does about Republicans. They’re the ones who base everything on quotas and calculations of what special interest group a policy will get them points with.

WTF is that?

The DEMOCRATS in the 1950s? Orval Faubus standing in the schoolhouse door of Little Rock High School? George Wallace, of “Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”? Bull Connor, so handy with the attack dogs and fire hoses? THOSE Democrats?

WTF indeed!

re: #334 _RememberTonyC

Somehow I don’t put as much blame on my wife for Obama’s election as you do. But in order to correct mistakes that were made as the party moves forward, it helps to hear what the other side was thinking. I never thought of LGF as simply an “Amen Corner,” even though I like the right of center sensibilities that are present in Lizard Nation.

Learning from mistakes is critical. In this case, the argument is “too squishy” vs “not squishy enough”. My POV is the choice of McCain was a sod toward the “be squishier” crowd… and it was a mistake. The base was fired up. It did get fired up, briefly, when Palin was announced (and McCain led in the poles for the one time in the fall), but they didn’t handle her well and let the MSM trash her. Those efforts continue.

As for your wife’s blame, it is no more or less than any of the other 66 million that put Barry in the White House to be the most powerful man in the world. The responsibility is shared.

Liberals tend to judge people based on skin pigmentation, gender, sexual orientation and other ‘group’ identities, including political party. If a person belongs to one of their victim identity groups but not their political ideology, then their own brains cannot handle the disparity. That’s why they always come across as hypocrites.

Conservatives tend to judge people on their brains (or lack thereof), behaviors and words. Skin pigmentation, gender, sexual orientation mean nothing in the scheme of things.

Palin is a smart lady. She didn’t become governor of Alaska by being a fluff-head. I think what you may be referring to is what seemed to be a lack of mensa type knowledge/command of world affairs. In her spine are conservative principles and we need people like her. The other stuff is just a matter of time. I think she’ll surprise you in the next few years.

363 Ringo the Gringo  Fri, Jan 30, 2009 2:55:02pm

One of the best things about Steele is that he does not come from any one of the various ideological camps of the right. He’s not a Huckabee evangelical, he’s not a Buchanan paleocon, he’s not a Bush-era neocon.

What he is, is a good old-fashioned, pragmatic Reagan-style conservative.

Smart, nice and positive…Just what the Republicans need.

OH - is this thread not about Michael Steele? I see y’all are talking AGAIN about Gov. Palin. Can you give Michael Steele a comment or two? Most of your Palin comments, on all sides, could be labeled with numbers, you know. YAWWWWWWN.

Anyway, back to the SUBJECT:

I was really ticked (but not surprised that he lost the senate race (this is a blue-dog Dem state), but I’m really hopeful that he’ll take big steps in the right direction - the GOP needs that.

re: #385 Globular Cluster

Which is why I advocated Carly Fiorina or Condi Rice on LGF numerous times, because I hate women. Palin is not only inarticulate, she shows an obvious lack of interest in national/world affairs that is truly embarrassing. There is “folksy”, and then there is a deer-in-the-headlights inability to field questions, coupled with an obvious lack of prior interest in history or world affairs.

Ok - so her being a woman is not a problem for you. Her inexperience in the national spotlight was, despite how much she energized the base?

Let’s make a deal. Give Palin a couple of years staring into the biased MSM headlights. Then we’ll compare notes. Fair enough?

That was Tina Fey who said “I can see Russia from my door” btw Palin never said it

Right. Tina just said the same thing as Sarah, only more succinctly.

Here’s Sarah:

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

And again:

COURIC: You’ve cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land—boundary that we have with—Canada. It—it’s funny that a comment like that was—kind of made to—cari—I don’t know, you know? Reporters— [Babbles, blames reporters.]

COURIC: Mock?

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that’s the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our—our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They’re in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia—

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We—we do—it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where—where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is—from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to—to our state.

Tossup: Who is more coherent, Sarah Palin or Caroline Kennedy?

Poor Alaska.

We have something in common.

I was ho-hum about politics until 9/11 and then the Dem party leaders began behaving badly - almost as though they were absolutely oblivious to the consequences of true evil.

When they began projecting evil onto GWB, instead of the real evil ones, I lost it.

Then I realized that the Dem party leaders had always done that. Stalin, Hitler, North Korea, Vietcong, Pol Pot, Saddam, yadayada. They simply cannot or will not face true evil and do the right things.

Your first - You can post off-topic where ever you like - where did I say don’t post off topic? No where. I don’t have that power, nor do I want it.Will you stop it means I want you to stop it because it’s stupid, not you must stop it.

Your second - I thought I was clear in my first post - sorry if not. I was not chiding you - I was chiding THEM for constantly trotting Gov. Palin in so they can bash her. I understand your coming to her defense, but for me, it just seems to egg them on. I also sense more than a touch of sexism in some of their remarks. Oh, they will deny it, for sure, but it’s there (not every comment - but some).

You can’t successfully debate people whose opinion is conceived - wholly or partly - based on prejudice, because they just don’t want to know, and that’s where - imho - a lot of the anti-Palin remarks ad naseum come from. I’ve rarely seen a decent debate on the subject, because so many people bought into the media circus, it muddied the waters for her.

If the posters were serious about the subject, they would know enough to know the difference between what Gov. Palin said and what Tina Fricking Fay said. They do not, as they have proven over and over and over. Therefore, I ignore them.

I’m fairly easy going and rarely chide other posters, but damn but I’m getting tired of the constant Palin bashing. Since there are no Palin threads, these sorry fellers her drag her in on a whim so they can f**king bash her. I am good and tired of it. That is it for me on this subject - because it is like beating a dead horse.

I’m also DISMAYED that people here care so little about Michael Steele that they would rather go “oh - this is like Palin being the first female candidate - let’s make fun of her for the rest of the thread! Haw haw haw.”

Meanwhile, this ridiculous story about Obama changing the pledge of allegiance is spreading through right-wing blogs like wildfire. Man. Obama Derangement Syndrome is making people insane. This story doesn’t even pass the sniff test, and it’s even labeled “SATIRE” at the site where it first appeared, but blogger after blogger is posting it as if it were true. How stupid and embarrassing.

Read the thread. The ones who trotted Palin in where the enthusiasts who started gushing about “Palin/Steele ‘12”. After that, she’s fair game. Her supporters bring her up every chance they get.

I also sense more than a touch of sexism in some of their remarks.

Whatever. Dim is dim, whether male, female, black, white, white female, black male, transgendered mixed race, or any other combination.

If the posters were serious about the subject, they would know enough to know the difference between what Gov. Palin said and what Tina Fricking Fay said. They do not, as they have proven over and over and over.

See my post #411. What she said was even dumber than Tina’s satire.

Since there are no Palin threads, these sorry fellers her drag her in on a whim so they can f**king bash her.

Again, people bring her up, like they brought her up here, as though she was going to be the salvation of party and country. I don’t think so, and I’ll bloody well say so whenever I get the chance.

And by the way, Charles isn’t too thrilled with her, either:

re: #289 Charles

Four years is a long time, and things could happen to change everyone’s opinion. Barack Obama was barely on the radar in 2004. But I have to admit (at the risk of my karma suffering a hit) that I’m not very enthusiastic about Sarah Palin as a Presidential candidate right now. I think she did rather poorly in this last election on several fronts, especially on scientific issues, and I strongly disagree with her support of the marriage amendment.

Have a great evening anyway, hon!

(No, you others, I’m not being sexist - “hon” is a Baltimore term of endearment. And I know Catttt personally…)

re: #199 yochanan

the term R.I.N.O. if used in here will get a down ding from me. frankly if you want to win you need all REPUBLICANS and even some independents and if we are lucky even a few ‘reagan democrats’

this term creates dis-unity.

I really like your comments and more often than not I agree, but, on this issue I have to disagree. And, perhaps it’s because we define Rino differently. My definition is Republic In Name Only. Which means to me that they really are Democrats, but cannot win an election in their district if they admit it. With regard to broadening the base, as you suggest, don’t we need to take special care to avoid uniting at a point in the political spectrum which defines us as Democrats-lite. McCain demonstrated, didn’t he, the results of that strategy?

That is fantastic!
But, do you actually think it will really matter politically-speaking to African-Americans, libs or other Dems? Not one atom is the quick answer, as those mentioned will marginalize him like all conservative or Republican African-Americans have been…Mr. Steele will also be disenfranchised from the fold…in essence he has figuratively become a racial enigma…black yet not, a Republican, a political enemy.
