I saw a story on Fox News about this a couple of days ago. There was a GOP congressman who returns about 10% of his operating budget every year - I forget his name.
A lot of congresspeople use their budgets to send "non-political" mailers to voters in their districts to let voters know what a great job their congress critter is doing. I used to get one from that asshole Nick Lampson every month. It's little more than a scheme to keep name recognition high. I guarantee that $93,000 will be used exactly for this kind of advertising.

That will get very messy. The fight over such issues as abortion and handgun possession alone would make forging a new Constitution that everyone can live with pretty much impossible. This will happen at a grass roots level even if the Republicans pussy out like they usually do when confronted with recalcitrant Democrats.
I don't think that, as a practical matter, it could be done again. The Union would be irrevocably shattered as Left Coast and northeast Blue States enact far Left laws and try to impose them on the rest of the nation, while the Red heartland would try to install a Right to Life policy that the Left would find intolerable.
It'd be like the gay marriage debate, only writ large; instead of effecting less than 5% of the population it will drastically impact 95% of the population (or even more than 95%). As I've said before, when Democrats use the term "bipartisan" they really mean that the Republicans give them everything they want, and the Republicans get nothing of any real value in return.
That dog won't hunt, if we are trying to reunite a splintered Union.
I was speaking of a return to original principals.... not an EU constitution.
But I'm an eternal optimist.

While I do not partake, myself, due to job requirements, I absolutely agree with you. I think it should be legal, like alcohol. Does anyone remember how Clinton ran the first time on lowering taxes, and what--5 minutes?--after he was sworn in, he found, to his sorrow, that he could not cut taxes? Did anyone call him out on his lies 4 years later? We did not. We are enthralled with the bright shiny object the magician is waving in front of our eyes, whether it is a new cell phone or a veritably unknown but plausible candidate for POTUS, or any other seat, for that matter.
The flaw is human nature, and our child-like enthrallment with shiny surfaces. The result is not just the current administration, but much of our financial straits, too. God, I wish I could see this when I was younger; I do better now, but when I'm almost irrelevant.

OK, getting closer. Each Congressman gets a Member's Representational Allowance of about $1.5 million to pay for staff wages, office expenses, mailing travel and the rest. There is a automatic increase cost of living increase each 1 January for both their pay and Member's Representational Allowance that they'd have to vote not to accept.
The $93,000 appears to be that adjustment, but can't find anything that tells me how Fox arrived at that figure.
The only thing I do know, is that's it's not a raise. They have to report every dime spent on staff wages and the rest and as far as I can tell, it was not a new bill that wa passed under Obama.

Yes, the prospect of "hard" drugs hitting the market openly is a bit scary to me as well. However... people who want them already have them. Now, if ones drug-use negatively affects others, he or she should be punished, severely, but if they are only hurting themselves?
The point I am trying to make is, why have "for your own good" laws? Why not have sensible laws that concern the impact one's behavior has on others? What do I care if some idiot decides to OD on heroin in his house, with just the cockroaches to see the spectacle? As long as he did not hurt anyone else, what is the harm? He is the dumbass who made a dumb choice, just like the drunken morons wrapping themselves and their cars around telephone poles. Now, if his actions hurt a family member, a neighbor or a bystander, then by all means punish his sorry ass. Otherwise? Let stupidity become lethal again.

I have children (now fully grown, over 30) whose lives were affected dramatically when their "friends" in high school OD'd and in one case committed suicide. Took years for them to put the image away. (If they have.)
I have watched friends of my own destroy themselves, and I have watched familes and parents disentegrate because of that.
Allowing it to happen legally is no remedy in my mind.

Found it. It looks like they may have have voted for a increase on Jan 19th, the day before the inauguration according to the only mention I could find. . Still no link to the amount, but it normally should have only gone up 50-75K, not 93K

I have children (now fully grown, over 30) whose lives were affected dramatically when their "friends" in high school OD'd and in one case committed suicide. Took years for them to put the image away. (If they have.)
I have watched friends of my own destroy themselves, and I have watched familes and parents disentegrate because of that.
Allowing it to happen legally is no remedy in my mind.
I am so terribly sorry to hear that. No one should be witness to something like that. Of course, events like that always should be taken into consideration. But, substances that are already legal, such as alcohol and prescription painkillers are causing exactly the same damage, as we speak.

This wasn't the "normal chemo". I had bladder cancer. What the 'cure' is involves running a tube up your d*ck, and putting some really nasty chemical straight into your bladder.
You "hold it in" for 3 hours, lying on each side, back, stomach so the chemical soaks in to all sides.
Then, you get to pee blood for six hours and it burns like hell for 3 days. You have to Clorox the toilet for the next 48 hours after this, because the chemical can/will cause tuberculosis for the next user otherwise.
I was grooving on the peeing blood stuff. Before that I was so freaked I was getting sick to my stomach.

jwb ...well, since I am not a guy ...I cannot relate to the tube ...I had many rounds of chemo and there was a point that I was not sure if I was alive or dead ...it's a real party in the treatment rooms ...when I had my port taken out of my chest ...I had the surgeon give it to me and I stepped on it and smashed it ...made me feel better ...the only thing that kept me going was a sense of humor ...hey ...at least we made it!

The difference between the scheduled increase in the 1.5 million budget per congressman is small and and has to be spent on constituent service and took place before Obama. Not that much heat in the story over going from 3% increase to 5 or 6 % especially the way they'll sell it.

Yes I have ...and I turn off any commericals for anything to do with cancer ... or any shows on it ... I watched more comedy movies when I was sick than you can imagine ... my family made me laugh so much and it was hard to laugh with your tongue about two inches thick ... my mother mainly took care of me and she was one tough ass woman ...she acted tough but I could hear her crying quietly sometimes at night ... as hard as it is when it is you ...I bet it is twice as hard when it is your child ...for me life now is a bonus ...I have lived ...I just want to stay around for awhile for the kids ...and I still watch many many funny movies ...so glad you made it too ...

"Constituent Services" means many things, especially if you're a career politician.

I really appreciate the work that you are doing to help the economy along now that I have been laid off. If you see fit, I would like to borrow 55% of your pay raise so that I can also help out stimulating the economy. With that I could purchase food to stimulate the grocery business, clothing to stimulate the garment industry and pay the mortgage on my house for the housing industry. I know that you really want to help the economy and so do I. So with both of us working to that end we can stop this recession and move on to prosperity. I believe that you are kind hearted enough to help.

In an apparent reaction to the economic crisis facing the country, the House has decided to increase the allowances of Members of Congress so they can spend more money representing their constituents.
According to several Congressional sources, the House Administration Committee has alerted Members that their office accounts will increase by an average of $90,000 this year, an overall increase of about $40 million and significantly more that the increases of recent years.Every year, each House Member is provided a Member Representational Allowance, which pays for staff salaries, mailing costs, office supplies and the other miscellaneous costs of running a Congressional office. The amount allotted to each Member varies based on how far they have to travel to and from their district and other factors, but in 2008, the allowances ranged from $1.3 million to $1.6 million for each office, according to the Congressional Research Service.
In recent years, the MRAs have increased each year by about $25,000-$30,000 per office, several sources said, making this year’s increase remarkable.
“As a result of the current economic crisis, more pressure than ever is being placed on Member’s district offices to ensure that they have the necessary resources as they work to address expanded constituent needs,” Kyle Anderson, spokesman for the House Administration Committee Democrats, said in an e-mail to Roll Call. “Additionally, unprecedented increases in travel expenses, district office utilities and other related operational expenses must be incorporated into Member’s Representational Allowances.
“Failure to address these rising expenses could result in resources having to be diverted from key areas such as constituent service and Member outreach. The increase in the MRA will allow Member’s offices to continue to effectively serve their constituents during this difficult period.”
One House Republican chief of staff said that in his four years in the job “we’ve certainly never had a bump that big ... and it was not what I was expecting. We probably won’t use it all.”
The increases are still only projected numbers, Anderson said, based on anticipated appropriations for 2009 and 2010. The Appropriations Committee has traditionally approved a little less than the full amount the House Administration Committee has suggested, so the final number may be slightly lower, several staff members said.
And some Members make a practice of spending less than they are given each year. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) made a pledge to hand back money every year, and spokeswoman Anne Lupardus Hanson said that with the $82,000 he returned at the end of 2008, Kind has now given back more than $1 million to the U.S. Treasury in his six terms.
