Sign of the Apocalypse: LGF Agrees with Balloon Juice

Blogosphere • Views: 2,417

I’ve had serious differences with John Cole of Balloon Juice in the past, and probably will in the future, but in this post on the closing of PJ Media’s ad network he gets it exactly right: The Obligatory PJ Media Post.

I understand there is an inordinate amount of bad feelings and some hostility being chucked around, and I want no part in it. Roger Simon and the others at PJ always kept their word to me. From where I sit, PJ Media was an ad portal that provided advertising content for this site, and that was about it. I never understood claims at the beginning of this several years ago that somehow I was “losing my independence” or the rest of the nonsense for signing up with them. As I have stated repeatedly, maybe others had different experiences, but the company was great to me. They always kept their word, their staff was top-notch and great to work with (and I really hope they find jobs quickly/keep their jobs), and Roger Simon was a great person to do business with the past couple years. I signed a contract through the end of March, PJ Media and I are both honoring it, and they are moving on to something different. This sort of thing happens hundreds of thousands of times every day all over the world, and is really rather unremarkable.

(Hat tip: Confederate Yankee, who also makes some good points.)

It nice to see that you can have disagreements with people and still remain civil. Wouldn’t it be nice if Markos and his ilk learned something from this.

TAMPA, Fla. – Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged “regrettable” behaviour and “bad judgment” after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

Phelps said: “I engaged in behaviour which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Neo-Nazis on the rise in Europe….
Austrian far-right hopes to join EU parliamentary faction

Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) announced Sunday it could soon join the European parliament’s right-wing faction UEN, following a meeting of far-right parties in Vienna.

The (UEN) faction is currently the fourth strongest in the European parliament but with the help of the FPOe, it could become the third strongest after EU elections in June,” Strache said.

The FPOe, known for its anti-EU stance, had invited right-wing representatives from Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Serbia and Switzerland to discuss cross-national cooperation between the various parties.

Among those attending the Vienna meeting were MEPs Camre, Philip Claeys of the Flemish party Vlaams Belang and Bruno Gollnisch of France’s Front National.
….
he FPOe had already sought to create a broad new European “patriotic” party last year with the French Front National, Bulgaria’s Attaca party and Belgium’s Vlaams Belang.

What is going on in the world right now is a real bad repeat of the 1930s.

Economic trouble brought on by corruption and excess

The convergence of Leftist and Fascist tyrannies

An organized leftist 5th column that views state power as the maximum achievement of man

North Korea warns of possible war with South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea warned Sunday that South Korea’s confrontational policies may trigger a war on the divided peninsula, a message coming two days after the communist country vowed to abandon all peace agreements with its southern neighbor.
Relations between the two Koreas have been strained since conservative President Lee Myung-bak took office nearly a year ago in Seoul, pledging to take a harder line on the North. Tension heightened Friday when the North said it was ditching a nonaggression pact and all other peace accords with South Korea.
The tension may lead to “an unavoidable military conflict and a war,” North Korea’s main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary carried Sunday by the country’s official Korean Central News Agency.
“The policy of confrontation” by the South Korean government is “the very source of military conflicts and war” between the Koreas, it said.
The North has accused Lee’s government of preparing to stage a war, which South Korea denies. Earlier this month, the North’s military declared it adopted an “all-out confrontational posture” to defeat any southern aggression.

The reason the msm is not reporting on this is because unlike the administration in LA, who refused to call in the Federal Government for political reasons, the administration in KY called immediately and are happy with the response. The party’s two program documents, the ‘20 Principles’ and the ‘Program Scheme’ feature a number of nationalistic characteristics. They define Bulgaria as a one-nation state and assert the supremacy of the state and the ‘Bulgarian nation’ above ethnic and religious diversity, but at the same time want to have an official religion and participation of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in legislative work and in all important government decisions, as well as teaching of that Church’s doctrine in primary school. The ‘20 Principles’ envisage formulating a crime of ‘national betrayal’ and criminal prosecution of the ‘national traitors’.

Ugh.

I never engaged with the advertising side of Pajamas Media, but I did “work” for them last year as a freelance photojournalist when PJM sent me to cover the Democratic National Convention in Denver. My experience:

1. They were professional and non-flaky in every way.
2. Roger Simon was nice, courteous, friendly and accessible.
3. All the editors were capable, communicative, and on-the-ball.
4. All promises were kept, all payments made.
5. The bent over backwards to accomodate by bizarre request for anonymity.

All in all, a good, decent and professional company. And much better than many MSM outlets I’ve dealt with.

“Policy of Confrontation”- defined as “Repeatedly failing to surrender when so ordered”.

The problem is that Lil ‘Kim keeps forgetting which Korea he’s President of.

And that it’s the other one, plus China, plus other countries he really despises (like ours) that are why his people aren’t quite starving to death in spite of all his efforts to bring it about through the miracle of Stalinist “collectivist agriculture”.

/I wonder- does he still think Lysenko was right? It wouldn’t surprise me- unfortunately.

US President Barack Obama has already used experts within the last few months to hold high-level but discreet talks with both Iran and Syria, organizers of the meetings told AFP.
However, even before winning the November 4 election, Obama unofficially used what experts call “track two” discussions to approach America’s two foes in the region.

Nuclear non-proliferation experts had several “very, very high-level” contacts in the last few months with Iranian leaders, said Jeffrey Boutwell, executive director for the US branch of the Pugwash group, an international organization of scientists which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.

Yes, for Pete’s sake, he’s an athlete. His endorsers (to the tune of millions), I doubt would be quite so nonchalant about what he does or does not produce. They bank (and rightfully so) on the very thing that you so casually dismiss ….his iconic popularity, which coincidentally, is based on sports, which is further (coincidentally) based on a healthy mind and body.

To track if for you linearly, guy is sports hero, guy is admired and revered by impressionable adolescents, guy smokes pot, impressionable adolescents emulate their hero.

Now if he were an icon of say ….your age group, I would say good on ya, have fun. But he’s not.

Or, are you saying that it’s a good thing for kids to have heroes who are stoners?

I’m not judging the role model issue…smoking pot should be legal and the fact that it isn’t can be traced when you follow the money….it’s a farce

You think the Columbians lobby Congress to keep it illegal to keep supply down and prices up? Be hard to finance business jets with that shit if you could grow it in your back yard.

re: #145 Stonemason

It is an illegal drug, he has broken a law. C’mon, we can’t rip tax cheats and then give passes to dope somkers can we?

while I agree that he is ‘just an athlete’ it can not be argued that kids do look up to athletes. Just drop in at the local Y some evening this week and ask the swim coaches how the teams grew after his performance.

Kids look up to these people, it happens so when they screw up, it does hurt some kids. Others, however, can be helped as mine will be when we discuss this over the next few days.

Well, perhaps the kids will learn a life lesson: that even heroes sometimes have feet of clay. Even as an admitted pot smoker, he stands head and shoulders above some other athletes we’ve come to know and loathe.

I don’t do pot. I work in an industry where I could be, and have been, tested for drug use. But even if that particular risk weren’t there, I wouldn’t do pot. I just don’t care for it. But I’d like to see it legalized, and taxed, because the wasted law enforcement effort used against it is worse than the effects of the drug itself.

re: #159 pink freud

Or, are you saying that it’s a good thing for kids to have heroes who are stoners?

he’s only an icon (if indeed he is) to others that make him one….maybe he doesnt care about competing any more or endorsements….who’s to say….leave him alone and let him live the way he wants…smoking pot should be legal anyway…it’s risk with the legalities

Most marijuana sold illegally in the U.S. today is also grown here, and due to crossbreeding and other Mendelian techniques has a higher percentage of THC (tetra hydra cannibinol, the active ingredient that causes the “high”) than all but the most exotic “imported” stuff. This is why the Colombian and now Mexican cartels’ main cash crop is cocaine, not marijuana.

The funds supplying the war are not a part of the defense budget. What Obama wants to cut is the budget that pays the troops, provides their services, runs the bureaucracies within the army, research and development (which will be the first to go) and other various costs. this is not a defense cut because of whats going on in Iraq or Afghanistan, this is a cut that will lower the quality of our military for many years to come, especially since R&D will go down.

This only took six (OR MORE) requests, over app 10 threads-to get a BS response! We are still fighting a war-and you want a defense drawdown? I need a better answer, or I’ll just ignore ANY defense issue posts you make in the future! Iraq expenses were covered in separate bills-all approved by congress-and you want a defense drawdown in time of war?

For others here not conversant with what I’m throwing at Avanti-follow the links back. I’m a die hard defense type, and pushing him for a real response.

Obama seems unlikely to widen war in Afghanistan

President Barack Obama, who pledged during his campaign to shift U.S. troops and resources from Iraq to Afghanistan, has done little since taking office to suggest he will significantly widen the grinding war against a resurgent Taliban.

On the contrary, Obama appears likely to streamline the U.S. focus with an eye to the worsening economy and the cautionary example of the Iraq war that sapped political support for President George W. Bush.

“There’s not simply a military solution to that problem,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said last week, adding that Obama believes “that only through long-term and sustainable development can we ever hope to turn around what’s going on there.”

Obama’s Showdown Over Nukes

While serving under former President George W. Bush, Gates had repeatedly called for the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW) program to be put into operation, because the nation’s current nukes — mostly produced in the 1970s and ’80s — are growing so old that their destructive power may be in question.

“The Reliable Replacement Warhead is not about new capabilities but about safety, reliability and security,” Gates said in a speech in the week before last November’s election. In an article in the current issue of Foreign Affairs, released in early December after Gates was tapped by Obama to stay on at the Pentagon, Gates repeated that refrain. “Even though the days of hair-trigger superpower confrontation are over, as long as other nations possess the bomb and the means to deliver it, the United States must maintain a credible strategic deterrent,” he wrote. “Congress needs to do its part by funding the Reliable Replacement Warhead program — for safety, for security and for a more reliable deterrent.” RRW basically trades explosive force for greater assurance that new warheads would work predictably in the absence of tests, which the U.S. has refrained from conducting for nearly two decades to help advance nonproliferation goals. (See a graphic of the global nuclear arms balance.)

But Obama doesn’t buy that logic. Shortly after taking the oath of office on Tuesday, he turned what had been a campaign promise into an official presidential commitment: the new Administration “will stop the development of new nuclear weapons,” the White House declared flatly on its website, with no equivocation, asterisks or caveats.

Cato: I would like to pick up a thread of our discussion from the other day regarding the “woman taken in adultery” and the Ordeal of Jealousy, if I may.

Just saw this, Buzz. Thanks for taking the time! I thought about this some more later on, and actually found a reference in my “Oxford Bible Commentary” - in the discussion of Numbers, they mention Jesus’ action in the case of the adulterous woman. Not the other way round, though - the commentary on John does not refer back to the passage in Numbers. So your comments pointed me in a direction that I likely never would have stumbled across otherwise.

The point about executioners is interesting. Even today in firing squads it is customary for one or more rifles to be loaded with blanks, so no individual in the squad can know for certain whether he fired a live shot.

In beheadings and such, it was customary for aristocrats to actually pay the executioner a coin for his work as a token of forgiveness and recognition that it was the State, not the man, who was doing the killing.

FUS-Feline Urinary Syndrome-vey bad. Most people (and many vets) don’t recognize it as a problem in a timely manner-and cat dies. Mostly affects male cats (usually neutered), and is recognized by the cat squatting to pee continually, without actually urinating. It’s like a set of gall bladder stones. You’ll have to watch his diet from now on, and watch for recurrence of the problem. take care of Tiger, and my best wishes for him.

Yuval Levin over at NRO’s The Corner has a brilliant mini-essay:

When they manage to unify the entire House Republican caucus with David Brooks and Peggy Noonan, you know the Democrats have seriously botched something up. And boy, they really have. The more you look at the stimulus bill the clearer it becomes that it is the Congressional Democrats, not the opponents of this bill, who have failed to see that we are in a genuine and exceptional crisis. They’re working to use the moment as an opportunity to advance the same agenda they haven’t been able to move (with good reason) for a decade and more, and in the process are showing that agenda to be what we always knew it was: a massively wasteful, reckless, profligate, slovenly, higgledy-piggledy mess of interest group troughs and technocratic fantasies devoid of any economic thinking or sense of proportion.

Go read the whole thing.

That also implies his music is good enough to warrant the lifelong support of his fans. So, even if you don’t like it, you should admit that it has merit enough to deserve success, whatever your impression of it. There’s no accounting for taste.

Wow. I’m asking why it has “merit to deserve success” (and I disagree with the premise that something deserves success just because it is successful), and at this point, I regret that I did.

re: #129 buzzsawmonkey

Very interesting post, buzz.

A technicality..or maybe not. The Church never executed anyone. It was the state that did so. (Heretics were tried by the Church but then turned over to the temporal powers for execution.)

This division between the spiritual and temporal powers, embedded for centuries in Western Christianity, has had an enormous impact on political development, which I cannot even begin to go into here. I will say, though, that I believe that much of the 20th/21st century aversion to the death penalty has to do with the state now assuming the role of a church…….(as opposed to earlier in the modern age, when it was individuals or independent sects assuming those powers.)

You want to cancel the F-22 when the F-15’s are worn out? When all of the single seat F-15’s were recently grounded, we had to beg the Canadians to provide air coverage of Alaska with their F-18’s.

Do you think F-16’s and F-18’s are going to maintain the advantage for another twenty years? Have you seen the latest fighters from Russia and China?

You do know that the P-8 ASW aircraft is also on the chopping block (the S-3’s have already been retired)? And the Virginia class SSN’s (under budget and on time), and the newest carriers, and the DDG-1000, and the LCS?

You think we don’t need a Navy all of a sudden?

The M-1 Abrams was designed in the 1970’s, while it doesn’t need replacing yet, it does need a constant program of upgrades to deal with 21st century anti-tank weapons. That program is also on the chopping block.

Mr. piglet! Asking why a successful artistic impression deserves its success is kind of silly.

You say you’re a musician. If someone likes your music does that mean it’s good? If that were true, someone disliking your music would automatically mean it is bad. Do you want to accept that test with a piece of music you’ve spent your time crafting until you believe it is ready for publication?

Because someone WILL dislike it. Everything every artist ever creates. Someone WILL dislike it.

Springsteen deserves his fame, even and despite the fact that other deserving artists did not match his achievement.

Okay, well, here you go:

I’m not a “Mr.”, but Mr. Piglet, who has a doctorate in music and a longer, more impressive resume than mine (of which I am certainly not ashamed), is in full agreement with me on this topic. And I know you didn’t mean it this way - but just to clarify: I don’t “say” I am a musician. I am a musician, with thirty + years in the business, without ever having to do anything else for a living (though I have dabbled with a couple of other things).

No, I don’t believe that someone liking or disliking what I do is the test of merit, but I value the opinion of my peers more than I do a “civilian” on the topic of music. The opinion my fellow musicians have of me is far more important to me than that of the general public. I have been, thankfully, received well in both arenas.

I think, without asking, that I would have a hard time finding a pro in my circle of friends who thinks very much of Bruce Springsteen’s personal musical ability. My husband audibly laughed about the comments regarding the “excellence” of Springsteen’s band.

My husband, I should say, is a horn player who has played with Ray Charles and others of that stature. He is very good at his job, and he can read flyshit at thirty paces, as they say. Another of my relatives has done projects and played gigs with Randy Brecker, to give you another name. These are not garage musicians.

This, of course, does not mean that a software engineer or a fry cook won’t think Bruce Springsteen is the greatest musician who ever lived. They very well may.

So yes, someone will like or dislike it. The difference, for me at least, is that it matters who likes or dislikes it.

I don’t care about whether Springsteen is famous or not. Yoko Ono is also famous. Maybe he “deserves his fame” because he works his ass off. I don’t know. He very well may. But I just watched Jennifer Hudson sing the shit out of the national anthem, and I will tell you that Bruce Springsteen couldn’t do anything on that level if his life depended on it.

That’s okay. He’s famous anyway, so like you seem to be arguing, there has to be a reason for that.

Whatever it is you do for a living, you know. This is what I do. I realize everyone thinks they’re an expert on music simply because they listen to it, and they can go ahead and think that. I am judging this on a different set of criteria, and it was probably my mistake to be so honest about it. I should have realized my opinion would offend someone.

If you like him, good for you.

Don’t know what else to tell you, but unless you play music professionally, there is virtually no chance you could present an argument that would make much of a difference to me.

Nothing personal…honest.
