More Innocent Torture Victims Suddenly Become Jihad Warriors

More freed Guantanamo detainees return to terrorism.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Eleven Saudis who were released from Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, and then passed through a Saudi rehabilitation program for former jihadists are now believed to have fled the country and joined terrorist groups abroad, Saudi officials said Tuesday.

The 11 former detainees include two who were already identified last month as members of a Yemeni terrorist group. Their names were on a list of 85 wanted terrorism suspects made public Tuesday by the Saudi Interior Ministry.

The announcement further underscored the difficulties faced by the Obama administration as it prepares to close the Guantnamo detention center. All told, 14 Saudis now appear to have rejoined terrorist groups after their return from Guantnamo, including the 11 living abroad and 3 who were rearrested in Saudi Arabia after their return.

Vatican: Holocaust denier must recant

"Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to episcopal functions within the church, will have to take his distance, in an absolutely unequivocal and public fashion, from his position on the Shoah, which the Holy Father was not aware of when the excommunication was lifted," the statement said. The Shoah is the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.

Jewish groups welcomed the Vatican statement, saying it satisfied their key demand.

Has Obama actually released anyone from Gitmo, yet? I thought it was all still in the planning stages.

That said, it does seem possible that even an innocent person held at Gitmo would turn to terrorism, afterwards. Of course, if an innocent person did turn to terrorism, after Gitmo, that kinda begs the question... why don't people falsely accused of murder, in the United States, murder people, afterwards? It seems to me that most of them would just be glad that there out, yet for Gitmo, it seems like most will probably turn to terrorism, and I don't understand why. Prejudice, on my part, perhaps, but it seems like the social dynamics are what's, ultimately, to blame. I'm not sure what, specifically, about them, is different.

As soon as I read "Saudi rehab program for former jihadists," I started humming that Powerhouse music from the old Warner Bros. cartoons.

IMHO the Bush adminstration also needs to be blamed for not developing some legal infrastructure to handle these anomalous cases despite having ample time on their hands. Atleast the people involved in the 911 attacks should have been tried by a military court and executed by now.

That delay is curious. I know the Dems and "world opinion" stood in the way for some of the military tribunals they wanted to start. Leaving this mess for Obama was a mistake. Bush had years to do something and should have set up some kind of system. Now that Obama is in charge, you can bet these scumbags will get more protections than US citizens if they even make it to a trial, or even worse, just flat out let go.

Sorry to go OT so soon, but this is vital:

Vatican: Holocaust denier must recant

Unequivocal and public recantation. Can you feel Williamson squirming and worming? It's going to be interesting to watch.

Don't hold your breath, Cato. True, the Vatican said that he'd have to recant his Holocaust denial before he could possibly be reinstated as a bishop with the full powers of the office.

However, all clergy in the SSPX are currently suspended from their normal functions as priests or bishops -- for reasons having nothing at all to do with Holocaust denial, except in Williamson's case, but rather because of their "schismatic" views on other matters. Thus, for Williamson to be reinstated as a bishop, he'd have to recant all the "schismatic" stuff along with recanting the Holocaust denial.

On the other hand, if Williamson remains an SSPX loyalist and unrepentant about the broader issues of the "schism," then he's going to remain under suspension anyway -- so why should he be in any hurry to publicly change his views on the Shoah?
