Vatican: Holocaust Denying Bishop Must ‘Recant’

Religion • Views: 2,721

It took a worldwide outcry, but the Vatican is now saying that Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson must recant.

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican on Wednesday demanded that a prelate who denied the Holocaust recant his positions before being fully admitted as a bishop into the Roman Catholic Church.

It also said Pope Benedict XVI had not known about Bishop Richard Williamson’s views when he agreed to lift his excommunication and that of three other ultraconservative bishops Jan. 21.

Just one problem: does anyone really believe that Williamson can make this all OK by mouthing, “I recant?” Why in the world would anyone trust the word of a Holocaust denier?

Give him 10 minutes. Then excommunicate him.

Ick.

Shouldn't religious leaders be held to the highest standards? Simply recanting makes him one step above David Duke.

I reiterate: Ick.

I anticipate the bishop's reworking of his next non-apology:
"I'm sorry you were offended."

7 2by2  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:48:00am

That's the whole point with these statements, once they're made, they're out there for other lunatics and deniers to quote from.

8 zombie  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:49:14am

"I deny my denial!" the bishop must say.

"I won't believe you!" I say.

I wish the Vatican had asked for this immediately without pressure, but this is better than not asking for the statements to be recanted at all.

It's not a matter of firing him, not at least now. Now it's a matter of the Vatican trying to look good no matter what the outcry is.

They don't know where to turn next. They want to look good no matter what.

Years ago, I left the Catholic Church since their leadership appeared to be as inept as our politicians. Occasionally, I think about returning, but then the church manages to make me bury the thought.

19 Cato the Elder  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:52:18am
"Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to episcopal functions within the church, will have to take his distance, in an absolutely unequivocal and public fashion, from his position on the Shoah, which the Holy Father was not aware of when the excommunication was lifted," the statement said. The Shoah is the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.

Jewish groups welcomed the Vatican statement, saying it satisfied their key demand.

This is more than damage control. An "absolutely unequivocal and public" recantation is just that. If he's lying or equivocating, it should be easy to tell. I hope it is done (if the worm can bring himself to do it) live and posted on YouTube.

While there is every reason to doubt Williamson's sincerity, I see no reason to question Benedict's on this.

From Williamson's statements that I've watched and read online, I'm willing to lay even money that he won't do it. He's far too committed to his sick, whacko views.

This is going to be interesting.

21 Hhar  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:52:50am

Me, I don't beleive a word the man says. But that isn't necessarily the issue. The importance here is the demand on the part of the Vatican, and the Vatican's current consistent stance on antisemitism.

You can't check what any man's beliefs really are.

He was not consecrated by the RCC, only by that splinter group.
So 'Bishop' is a curtesy title - he has no office in the RCC.

As for why he should be 'valuable' - he is a liability to the Vatican, who allowed him and three others back into the fold.
He is 'valuable' for all those who'd rather bash the Vatican than deal with the real problem of antisemitism in their states.

Oh - and now that this 'bishop' is back in the fold, he can be properly disciplined by the RCC, something which was not possible when he was excommunicated.

Btw - he's not held his pernicious views since just after he was re-admited. He held them before - why was there no outcry then?

35 Salamantis  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:54:53am

The Pope is trying to squash a schism over Vatican II. If the Church embraces those that broke away and were subsequently excommunicated, the Church is hoping to exercise some control over them. We will see how effective this is, since it is now center ring in the media circus. Never mind that the circus will now make this an almost impossible endeavor.

50 Miss Molly  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:59:12am

How did this person get to be a Biship anyway? Surely someone must vet these canidates before they are made Bishops.

If the Pope was "lifting his excommunication" why was he "excommunicated" in the first place? Enquiring minds would like to know.

51 Desert Dog  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:59:16am

I would guess he is on "Double Secret Probation" already. The longer the Pope waits to smack him down, the worse he will look. A GERMAN Pope should have no trouble doing that.

The Catholic Church

According to the Catholic Church, excommunication, in the sense of a formal proceeding, is not a penalty, but rather a formal proclamation of a pre-existing condition in a more or less prominent member of the Catholic Church. When such a person commits acts that in themselves separate him from the communion of the faithful, particularly when by word, deed, or example he or she "spreads division and confusion among the Faithful", it is necessary for the Church to clarify the situation by means of a formal announcement, which informs the laity that this is not a person to follow, and notifies the clergy that the person, by their own willful acts, has separated from the Church and is no longer to receive the sacraments, with the exception of Reconciliation. The decree may also indicate the mode of Reconciliation required for re-entry into the Church, specifying whether the local bishop may administer the process or it is reserved to the Pope. Excommunication is never a merely "vindictive penalty" (designed solely to punish), but is always used as a "medicinal penalty" intended to pressure the person into changing their behaviour or statements, repent and return to full communion.

He was never consecrated as a Bishop in the Roman Catholic Church, but by the Society of St. Piux X, a group that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Accepting the title of Bishop from this splinter group was the grounds for his excommunication by Pope John Paul II.

Why do Williamson's rehabilitation and the 2006 Tehran conference have ominous significance? Because Duke, who managed to get 43 percent of the vote in his unsuccessful 1990 U.S. Senate campaign from Louisiana, is now able to tell students at colleges in heartland America with a straight face that his contention that there were never any gas chambers has international academic and institutional support, and because Holocaust deniers across the globe will interpret Williamson's return into polite Roman Catholic society as a victory for their cause.

it's between williamson, his confessor and God, in the big scheme it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

that said, williamson is a sick, sad pos that would have done better in concentrating on his role as a priest and less on appearing on television shows.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
(By Cardinal Cushing)

0 Almighty, Eternal God, look upon the face of Thy Son, and for love of Him Who is the Eternal High-priest, have pity on Thy priests. Remember, 0 most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition of the Bishop's hands. Keep them close to Thee, lest the enemy prevail against them so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.

0 Jesus, I pray Thee for Thy faithful and fervent priests; for Thy unfaithful and tepid priests; for Thy priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Thy tempted priests; for Thy lonely and desolate priests; for Thy young priests; for Thy dying priests; for the souls of Thy priests in Purgatory.

But above all, I commend to Thee the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Thy Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me or helped and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way. 0 Jesus, keep them all, close to Thy heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

It was a group excommunication over Vatican II. Benedict XVI wants to get these folks back into line. And they're not bishops in the Church. They've adopted the title for themselves after excommunication.

I thought they were excommunicated over the unauthorized ordinations as bishops by that rogue Cardinal.

How did this person get to be a Biship anyway? Surely someone must vet these canidates before they are made Bishops.

If the Pope was "lifting his excommunication" why was he "excommunicated" in the first place? Enquiring minds would like to know.

He was made 'bishop' not by the Pope, or in fact by the RCC< in the usual way.
He was 'consecrated' by the splinter group of Lefevbre, who split after Vatican II, iirc.
His bishopric is not recognised byt the RRC - but his being a member of the RRC is.
He was probably excommunicated because he taught stuff against the RCC - I think Pope John Paul II excommunicated him.

He was apparently excommunicated because he was made a bishop by someone who wasn't authorized to do so, but he called himself a bishop anyway. More I don't know.

As to excommunicating, nobody gets excommunicated because they want to be. It is only people who don't want to be.

There are atheists who want to leave the church completely and not be "counted" by the Vatican as their flock. Just for fun they have written asking for that saying that they have done the things it takes to be excommunicated (there's a list, nothing obscene), but they are never acknowledged.

Not very good taste in my mind, as an atheist, but the point is that it is not something one can invite.

India Warns Obama Over Kashmir

India has warned US President Barack Obama that he risks “barking up the wrong tree” if he seeks to broker a settlement between Pakistan and India over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

MK Narayanan, India’s national security advisor, said that the new US administration was in danger of dredging up out of date Clinton administration-era strategies in a bid to bring about improved ties between the two nuclear armed neighbours.

“I do think that we could make President Obama understand, if he does nurse any such view, that he is barking up the wrong tree. I think Kashmir today has become one of the quieter and safer places in this part of the world,” Mr Narayanan said in an interview with CNBC TV18.

Obama is way out of his depth.

Add this to the fact that he and Michelle ditched the White House to "get away" yesterday and it is clear that The Presidency is above his pay grade.

I am no fan of Christopher Hitchens, but his analysis is correct here: and this is about much more then Holocaust denial.

The Pope’s Denial Problem

For decades, it has seemed that the schismatics would either end their days as lonely, cranky outsiders or else rejoin the fold. Instead, Pope Benedict XVI has now moved the Roman Catholic Church to the right in order to accommodate, and rehabilitate, those who defected. Among these is a Lefebvrist "bishop" named Richard Williamson, who doubts his own version of the facts of the Nazi Holocaust and who furthermore suspects the Bush administration of having orchestrated the events of September 11, 2001, in order to afford itself a pretext for war.

The pope's decision to apply the principle of inclusion to these decidedly eccentric elements, organized as they are under the banner of "the Society of St. Pius X," has upset many liberal Catholics as well as some quite conservative ones, among them George Weigel. But should we consider it as an internal affair of the Roman Catholic Church? Here is why we should not.

More details began to emerge Tuesday about Nadya Suleman, the Whittier mother of newborn octuplets and six other children.

Records show that Suleman, 33, had filed for workers' compensation in 1999 while employed as a psychiatric technician at Metropolitan State Hospital.

Details for the claim were not available. In 2001, Suleman filed a second claim with the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board for "injury to neck, back and shoulders from auto accident on commute for medical treatment," according to records filed with the California Department of Industrial Relations.

The records indicate that her actual earnings at the time of injury were "max," but no specific dollar amount was provided. Suleman received treatment for the injuries that were covered by her employer or insurance company, records show.

She was not covered by Medi-Cal. Patricia Ortiz, public information officer for the state Division of Workers' Compensation, said that "max" earnings means that Suleman was earning at least $490 per week at the time of her injury.

The claim was filed, records stated, because of a disagreement regarding liability for: temporary disability indemnity, permanent disability indemnity, reimbursement for medical expense, medical treatment, compensation at proper rate and rehabilitation. Additional records show that on Sept. 25, 2008, a petition was filed to compel Suleman to attend a medical exam with "petition to terminate liability for temporary disability indemnity."

No other details about Suleman's case were available. Since the birth last week of the octuplets, Suleman has come under criticism for undergoing fertility treatment despite the fact she already had six children and was a single mother. It does not appear that Suleman was working, though she has been attending school at Cal State Fullerton, where she was pursuing a master's degree in counseling.

Meanwhile, officials at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center said Tuesday afternoon that the octuplets continue to do well. "The world might see them as octuplets, but in our [unit] they are eight individual babies with their own personalities and needs," said Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist. Officials said the babies were breathing on their own and receiving a nutritional supplement intravenously that is tailored to their individual needs. They are also being fed donated pasteurized breast milk.

Here's a link to a Washington Post article.

IIRC, she used to work as a psychiatric technician, was injured on the job, and has been unemployed ever since. On the house thing, I read or saw a story that said her parents had bought a house (when she only had six children), and that the parents subsequently went bankrupt and were forced to move in with her - into the house they'd bought her.

Who paid for the in-vitro?

Any thoughts about the pope's desire to settle more amicably the split with the Greek Orthodox church? If he's willing to bring these deniers back into the fold, I'm wondering if he wants to have a talk with the GOC. But I am speculating.

re: #137 Killgore Trout

This isn't really a change in the Vatican's position. he is still reinstated (excommunication reversed) but they are saying if he wants to advance he will have to recant. It really doesn't change anything.

Respectfully, I think that's not true. The reversed excommunication simply allows him to receive the sacraments like any ordinary Catholic. It did not "reinstate" him as a bishop, since his bishopric was never recognized in the first place.

The Vatican said Wednesday that, while Williamson's excommunication had been lifted, he still had no canonical function in the church because he was consecrated illegitimately.

"Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to episcopal functions within the church, will have to take his distance, in an absolutely unequivocal and public fashion, from his position on the Shoah, which the Holy Father was not aware of when the excommunication was lifted," the statement said.

If he doesn't recant he remains at most a simple priest.

Times executive editor hints at online access fees

The editor of The New York Times has hinted that the newspaper might charge again for access to some of its online offerings, less than two years after abandoning fees to boost advertising revenue.

Executive Editor Bill Keller gave no specifics or timetable, and company officials characterized the internal discussions as general and ongoing.

In an online question-and-answer exchange with readers this week, Keller said that although advertising generates the bulk of online revenue, "a lively, deadly serious discussion continues within The Times about ways to get consumers to pay for what we make."

All of the coverage over this story just seems like potshots at the Catholic Church. I have a strange feeling that if it Professor Williamson rather than "Bishop" Williamson that this would be a non-story, and even if it was that the institution that employed him would be getting praise by some journalists for their daring and bohemian open-mindedness.

Fact of the matter is, is that Christianity has a long history of antisemitism, and for the majority of history the Catholic Church was synonymous with Christianity in the Western world.

It seems very unlikely that these pseudo-clergy and outright actual clergy that are antisemites today learned it from Church doctrine but walked into the fold carrying those views from the culture around them.

No one (in the mainstream media, academia et al) wants to point the finger at themselves, their friends or their colleagues. Christians are easy targets, and in particular Catholics who are well disliked by many Protestants.

Of course you are going to wind up with antisemitic clergy in the Catholic Church. I dare say though that you are going to find a lot more antisemites coming from, I dunno, England (like Williamson), or France, or Quebec, where Jew hate is politically chic.

Where Williamson is getting criticism from journalists, politicians, and other theologians, I see suspiciously little criticism for the outright genocidal lunacy of (largely secular) protesters and pundits, whom also probably harbor no love for Catholics on top of it all.

Williamson truly deserves the scorn and criticism he gets, but I'd really prefer it come from sources that don't make common cause with, or outright ignore their own disgusting Troofers, Holocaust deniers and revisionists of all stripes.

Williamson's 'sin' in the eyes of the ones harping on him the loudest in the media isn't that he is an antisemite, or purveyor of vile conspiracy theories. It is that he is a far-right wing theist that does these things. Like I said, if it were Professor Williamson, we probably wouldn't even know he exists.

As I just posted on the thread downstairs, what this statement from the Vatican REALLY means is:

The Vatican on Wednesday demanded that a prelate who denied the Holocaust recant his positions [on the Holocaust in addition to recanting on the eleventeen other matters that place all members of SSPX in "schism" with the Vatican] before being fully admitted as a bishop into the Roman Catholic Church.

That is, every priest and bishop in the SSPX has some recantin' to do before being unsuspended from their offices in the Church; Williamson simply has one more item to recant, namely his Holocaust denial.

And if Williamson refuses to recant on the broader issues of the "schism", he'll remain under suspension anyway, along with the rest of the SSPX clergy, so from his POV there's no super-urgent reason to change his views on the Shoah.

(I keep using scare-quotes around "schism" because there seems to be some disagreement in the Church whether the frosty relationship between the Vatican and the SSPX amounts to an actual schism, or just some sort of Schism Lite, or what.)

207 J.S.  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 10:33:31am

I really haven't a clue as to why the Williamson individual was excommunicated in the first place (imo, that was a good idea -- especially given that this was a bishop (!?); and why the reinstatement is even more baffling (isn't Williamson still a priest?) -- but one thing does seem somewhat clear -- and that's is this -- the Pope does X, outcries ensue, then the Pope back-tracks. Maybe to avoid this pattern the pope should consider a bit more carefully that initial impulse to do X...

Now that's an Excommunication!

Just one problem: does anyone really believe that Williamson can make this all OK by mouthing, “I recant?” Why in the world would anyone trust the word of a Holocaust denier?

Depends what the Vatican demands. If Ecclesia Dei requires Williamson to sign his name to a statement laying out a series of facts, that will be far in excess of a mere "I recant." By all means, hold the bar high. This could be a means of pushing the anti-Semites in the SSPX further and further toward the margin than they already are.

You know what's a real slap in the Papal face?

Williamson's "I'm sorry if people were offended" non-apology was precisely the same kind of response that Pope Benedict gave to Muslims who were unjustifiably pissed off over his Regensburg remarks.

So? One set of remarks were right, and the other wrong. Hence, the apologies should similarly vary in strength.

Self-absorption is the stock in trade of the N.Y. Times. Your quote is an extreme example of the Palestinian version of it. In the Palestinian version, murder of Jews by rocket has become an abstraction. That's an abomination, but it's exactly what the N.Y. Times does. It's just a matter of degree.

Example: "The editors of the N.Y. Times were astonished to learn that Pennsylvanians enjoy hunting and fishing, and that Pennsylvanians will fight to keep their hunting rifles and fly rods."

My husband has a business associate that reads WMD specialist - and the guy works inside the US. 40 Al Queda guys just infected themselves accidentally with bubonic plague - the equivalent of a bomber blowing himself up accidentally.

Our enemies are relentlessly probing our vulnerabilities. Cheney know all the attempts -and the progress that has been made on the enemies' side. We have no way of adequately defending an open society only through defense - we have to be lucky every day - the terrorists only have to be lucky once.

That's why we have to be on offense against them.

You are wrong, look at past focus on other holocaust deniers, including those in Vlaams Belang, Front National, etc. It certainly wouldn't be ignored here.

I didn't say that those stories got ignored by us. I said by those promoting the story, and specified journalists. We wouldn't know who Williamson was if he wasn't a far-right Catholic priest, but instead a leftist MP or Academic because it wouldn't be a story.

Again though. Vlaams Belang and Front National get news coverage because they are far right political organizations. If they were transnationalist leftist parties that were also racists, or holocaust deniers, we wouldn't know who they are.

I'm well aware that antisemitism and racism gets exposed on both sides of the aisle here. However, most of the left-wing seething hatred you will notice comes from Zombie's photojournalism, other independent outlets, or op-eds and not pulled from Yahoo news, the headlines of major newspapers/wire services.

The larger issue still stands though, that without antisemitic Brits, you don't get antisemitic British Priests. That there is an issue with antisemitism in the Church is a given in; that there is a problem with antisemitism everywhere else is obfuscated.

My husband has a business associate WHOSE BUSINESS CARD reads WMD specialist - and the guy works inside the US.

Fixed that

My point was not to "diss" all Catholics, but to point out that the Vatican acts more swiftly on matters of Church doctrine than on matters of morality.

And that's probably true.
My point again - using the term "cookie" is intended, imo, to be contemptuous.
and it shows contempt for all of us.

Sudden Jihadi Syndrome may have played a role in the UNC drive by jihad - Taheriazar; the DC sniper (Mohammad and Malvo), the Seattle Jewish Center attack, and the SLC attack... but law enforcement downplayed it in each instance. None were connected with al Qaeda from what was released.

the SLC shooter was caught on tape bellowing his battle cry....and recall and armed citizen pinned him so the cops could kill him

"wafer" is fine.
Hell, cookie and cracker are fine.
But when people use those terms, it always seems to me to be to express contempt.
Thus I take issue.

327 DistantThunder  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 11:01:43am

re: #305 reine.de.tout

Well, not usually.
But people who use "cracker" or "cookie" probably know full well the usual term is "host", and use "cracker" or "cookie" as a way to show contempt.

No skin off my back, really - I make a point and an effort to not post things at that level.

I think the Catholic church is part of our political problem in that they provide cover for these "Catholic" politicians to full embrace positions completely contrary antithetical to church doctrine - without any repercussion from the church. I know someone tried to restrict communion - but that didn't work out when Kerry just went and took communion anyway.

If the church excommunicated a few more liberal catholic politicians, I'd be impressed.

/blockquote>

That sentiment has become the accepted template. It explains every commenter and protest of Israel.

Jews/Israelis are to be targeted for death as a matter of course. Jews defending themselves is beyond the pale.

It is in sum what explains the World and media reaction to any Israeli defense. Israeli defense against murder attempts is in and of itself- a disproportionate response.

Border cities like Nogales or Agua Prieta...forget about it. The drug cartels are taking over and we better do something about it soon, or Mexico will turn into a nightmare.

You know I was thinking the same thing recently, that "we" meaning the US has to do something about this and soon. But when I asked myself what the heck we could do, I could not come up with one single reasonable thing we can do. And just pouring more money into Mexico will not work. Remember that Saddam was an eco-terrorist having set 700 oil wells on fire during the first Gulf war. It was predicted that it was going to take years to put them out, because of the technology involved. Then oilman Red Adair developed a new process and was able to put out a well fire in a few hours instead of a few weeks per fire.

There were a total of 16 reasons that we took Saddam out. When he gassed the Kurds from the air - he killed 15,000 people in one week. Then he sent teams to villages to execute the sick and dying. When that didn't kill enough Kurds he continued the genocide by bussing a total of 180,000 people out into the desert to pre-dug graves where his military machine gunned, or had executed almost a quarter million people.

In one grave they found 86 children - 25% of whom had been buried alive without any bullet wounds. The anthopologist in charge of the grave excavation said there were mass graves "as far as the eye could see."

Saddam was a genocidal MONSTER with tons of yellow cake working towards an Apocalypse. Like a serial killer fiddling with a new gun that he can't quite figure out yet.

I like GWB, but among one of his biggest mistakes was basically ignoring Mexico and most of Latin America. They are our neighbors and as the report you posted listed, our biggest trading partners. Mexico needs to be stabilized or it will certainly spill over to our side of the border. The violence already has. My hometown, Phoenix, is now the "Kidnapping Capitol of the USA" and it is all Mexican on Mexican crime. So, look to El Paso, Phoenix, Tucson....that is what is coming to your town or city soon if Mexico falls apart and becomes a Narco-State like Columbia was in the 80's.

Just to chime in on the Salt Lake thing, as a former Salt Lake resident--

Is it only terrorism if more than one person perpetrates the crime? Granted, it's a little harder to stop a plot that is hatching between the voices in one man's head, but the dead are still dead, their families still grieve, and the motivation was still the same.

The Unabomber was a terrorist.

Now, if we are discussing only the specific type of terrorism being perpetrated by large, organized groups, just say so. (I was going to say Islamofacist groups, but I didn't want to leave William Ayers out).

Perhaps there should be a term to differentiate between group terrorism, and solo terrorism.

I'm hoping the geography and the road system prevents any large scale problems in NM....of course once here there are few places to go really, unlike Pheonix or on up through Texas...

How many Catholics attend Mass, and how many attend SSPX services? Most pewsitters have never even heard of the SSPX, and if they have, they will overwhelmingly say, "oh that's some sort of schismatic group, isn't it?"

I think the total SSPX service attendance is around 60,000 (probably inflated). Total Catholic population is put around 6,442,583,922.

That number is wildly overestimated. World population is only about 6,758,365,483 right now as estimated by the US census bureau.

I suppose my position would be that if my organization doesn't recognize him as a bishop, then I would not refer to him using that honorific. It makes it appear as if my organization does, indeed, accept him as a bishop.

Basically, your organization would be, I am sure, much less complex than the Catholic Church.

It's Canon Law. www.ourladyswarriors.org...]>

Can. 1382 Both the Bishop who, without a pontifical mandate, consecrates a person a Bishop, and the one who receives the consecration from him, incur a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See.

Keep in mind that Canon Law is REALLY complex.

He and the other SSPX bishops were excommicated when Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated them as bishops, because it was done without pontifical mandate. They were bishops, but they were AUTOMATICALLY excommunicated, because what they did infringed the laws of sacred discipline.

Removing the excommunication did not give them back their power to say Mass, but it did give them the right to take communion. An excommunicated Catholic may not receive any of the sacraments of the Church, including the Eucharist, marriage, and Christian burial.

I would really, really like for that to happen. Actually, I would like for him to take a tour of the camps with maybe Rabbi Yisrael Lau and then go to Israel to Yad Vashem and meet with survivors. People like this need to meet face to face with the Holocaust suvivors who are still alive before they are all gone. And no, I don't think it would necessarily change his mind, but I think that people like him are absolute cowards who do their antisemitic denials in the relatively safe comforts of their own spaces, never having to look people in the eye. I think lefties are devisive. Given that Cheney defended America while lefties are trying to destroy it, I say God bless Dick Cheney and screw the left. Period.

A political observation......

The Dems always call Republicans either stupid or sinister. According to the left:

Reagan, GWB, Eisenhower, Palin - all stupid
Nixon, Chaney, Goldwater - all sinister

On the reverse side, the Reps always call Democrats either naive or corrupt. According to the right:

Clinton, Pelosi, Biden, Rangel (this list is long) - all corrupt
Carter, Obama, Cyrus Vance, Brzynski - all naive

Of course, some - like Bill Richardson - qualify as both.

I'm no expert, and signifying nothing, but I have taken Communion in services that used loaves of homemade bread.

close the borders, fences, walls, mine fields, foot and vehicle patrols triple the size of the BP then double that, pass special new punishments for narco terrorists and weapons charges....dickin around gets people killed....there is plenty we could do

Actually, what we really need is to stabilize the country by stopping the demand for illegal drugs here in the USA. That is what is fueling the scumbag drug cartels....demand from the USA. That will be hard to do.

If you take a Mexican out of Mexico and put him here in the USA, he or she thrives (for the most part). But, if you leave that same person in Mexico, they are stuck in whatever circumstances they were born in. I would say lets work on the Mexican economy and get it off the addiction of Oil and Cash remittances from the USA. I have never seen harder workers than the Mexican immigrants (illegal and otherwise). So, it has to be the culture of the place that is stunting the growth......too bad, because Mexico is a beautiful place, full of hard working people....ruled by bad government and increasingly controlled by drug cartels.....

Oh, but there is a difference:

There really are terrorists who are trying to kill Americans. There have been dozens of plots uncovered and broken up because of the agressive methods the Bush admin employed.

On the other hand, the paranoid rantings of the Democrats that Bush & Cheney were subverting the constitution, that Iraq was a "distraction" from the real war, that the Surge had failed & the war was lost, that Al Qaeda never really posed a real threat anyway, that Shiite Iran would never work with Sunni terrorists, & so on, were all wrong and based on lies.

Can you see the difference now?

Not from some of the comments that are just as far out as those I've seen here on occasion, and been dinged down for disputing. i.e.
Obama is a Commie, hates America, wants the terrorists to win, is a Chicago thug and the rest.
I was slammed on the leftie sites when the moon bats did the same with GW, just as I am here. I did not like GW's politics, but he was my POTUS and did not deserve the extreme rants. From Redemptionis Sacramentum:

[48.] The bread used in the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharistic Sacrifice must be unleavened, purely of wheat, and recently made so that there is no danger of decomposition.[123] It follows therefore that bread made from another substance, even if it is grain, or if it is mixed with another substance different from wheat to such an extent that it would not commonly be considered wheat bread, does not constitute valid matter for confecting the Sacrifice and the Eucharistic Sacrament.[124] It is a grave abuse to introduce other substances, such as fruit or sugar or honey, into the bread for confecting the Eucharist. Hosts should obviously be made by those who are not only distinguished by their integrity, but also skilled in making them and furnished with suitable tools.[125]

Interesting.

Wafers are anywhere from white and round, to brownish and odd-shaped.
Just depends.

The big difference between a modern Communion host & a matzah is that a matzah is crumbly & breaks apart when bitten into. If one believes that the Host is the Body of Christ, then you can't have little bits & pieces falling all over the place. In college, they baked fresh unleavened bread every Sunday for Mass.

Oh, okay -- I misunderstood your point (although NB that in your quote above, you were looking at the wrong "total' column in the wikipedia table!).

Anyway I thought you were saying that within SSPX itself, anti-Semitism is a "marginal" force -- which, alas, does not seem to be the case.

You're obviously correct that SSPX is thoroughly marginal within the RCC, and having been raised as a Catholic in America, I would also assert that anti-Semitism is very marginal within contemporary Western Catholicism (though I can't speak for the Third World).

You should try some handmade shmurah matzah to see what the real thing is like; it is far less crumbly (and much tastier, once you get used to the wheaty, cardboardy flavor) than the machine-made squares that most people are familiar with.

You can get some from any Chabad (may have to pre-order), or even in some supermarkets, around Passover. (Price Chopper in Worcester, MA, had some last year.)
But it is expensive, being hand-made. And the people making it must keep in mind that it is for the purpose of the mitzvah (commandment) of eating matzah at Passover.

I agree on the market angle of course...the rest is up to Mexico....the wealth is there but the reform is not...they must do it themselves....novel concept eh?

Mexico could be a net oil exporter if they chose to do so. They used to be, but they let their infrastructure degrade to the point that they now have to import some refined products. They have tons of proven reserves. However, the government took over their oil industry and pretty much ran it into the ground for the last 10-20 years.

The only way the Mexican problem is going to be solved is if the Mexican government steps up to the plate and pitches in and helps out big time. One place they could start is to sell the oil companies back to private entities and let them get that part of their economy back on track.

The other issue is drugs. Until Mexico actually declares war on the drug cartels, nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever be accomplished. It will be bloody and long, but they can take their country back if they really want to.

You say that in jest, but Chaney's hunting incident perfectly plays into Chaney's reputation. The people who don't like Chaney, think his policy decisions are heartless, and only a heartless man could shoot someone point-blank by 'mistake.'

In general, liberals are all about 'intentions.' If Obama can sell them unicorns, they are happy to buy it because it's such a nice vision. When the policy results all fail, they forgive it because it was well intentioned.

Conservatives, on the other hand, want to see results. That's why we don't get the whole Obama-love thing. All the guy does is talk pretty. His ideas are proven failures.

If one believes that the Host is the Body of Christ, then you can't have little bits & pieces falling all over the place.

According to my mom and her sisters (all alumnae of pre-Vatican2 Baltimore Catholic schools), it used to be one of things "everyone knows" that if a Host was accidentally dropped on the floor during Communion, the priest was supposed to throw himself bodily on top of it, like a soldier jumping on a grenade. Of course, in this case, the reason was not to prevent the Communion wafer from exploding and sending Jesus-shrapnel into the bodies of innocent bystanders, but rather to ensure that no one would step on it.

Allegedly, the section of carpet within a 12-inch radius of where the Host had landed was supposed to be taken up and burned, lest any microscopic fragments of the wafer end up in the treads of someone's shoes.

(Again, my mom and aunts never claimed to have seen this happen -- it was just one of those things they'd heard as kids.)

The low approval ratings are among that segment of the population who wish Saddam had been left in power, who claimed the Surge was not working, that the war was lost, that Iraq should be carved up, that preventing a genocide was not sufficient reasont to keep US soldiers in Iraq.

I think avanti was talking about the effect. One emphasis gets 8 years in one direction, and then the electorate goes for the other emphasis for a while to make sure things don't go too far in any one direction. That makes sense.

It is true that the capitalist emphasis is superior to the communist emphasis because capitalism alone creates wealth. Communist economies simply coerce it away, throw it around, and collapse in failure.

Except that the middle seems to keep moving left. Not quite a pendulum is it? Good always, absolutely triumphs over evil as our schools teach it. A swing far enough in one direction is not correctable unless hardcore reactionaries get into power, which is basically impossible with democratic means.

My grand kids will probably grow up to be far-right fringe wingnuts while being politically simpatico with Barack Obama. He was after all very progressive for his time. God knows what the 'middle' will look like a few generations from now.

Reality can be debated based on perception, but perception rules in the end.:)

And what are your speculations on Pelosi and Reids even lower approval ratings?

In all seriousness, if you voted for Obama, how do you qualify your fiscal conservatism?

It is no secret, legitimately judging him by his past performance, what his political ideology is.

What track record he has is indisputable. By this, I mean it is probably farther left than any previous President in history. Huge swaths of the private sector stand to be socialized, or at the very least, regulated to the point of not possessing any autonomy.

How do you square this?

The matza ball debate pales in comparison with the gefilte fish divide: sweet or pepper?

By the way, they should float. FLOAT FLOAT FLOAT.

How big are matzo balls ideally supposed to be -- I mean, in rough terms of "marble," "golf ball," "tennis ball," or what? And spare me the obvious joke answer: "depends on how old the matzo was when slaughtered.")

(I was once "served" a matzo-tennis-ball in an NYC diner -- I mean, it was a bowl of soup with ONE huge sodden sphere of matzo crumbs sitting in it. But this was like my first month living in NYC; I'd never had matzo-ball soup before and just assumed that any NYC diner would offer an "authentic" version. This was before I found out that the vast majority of bagels sold in NYC are -- bleh! -- steamed, and therefore not "New York style" bagels.)

No- return. Just because Williamson rejects sense, reason and morality doesn't mean that the Church Jesus founded and its members are horrible.
The Pope believes- from a spiritual standpoint- that one can repent and rejoin the Church. Williamson has to want it. If he doesn't want to apologise before God then that would be his problem.

Christians are supposed to forgive those who say they've repented. We're even supposed to forgive serial backsliders (Matthew 18:21-35). If Williamson claims to have recanted, the Pope doesn't have much doctrinal choice but to re-communicate him, assuming he rules out a papal-infallibility smackdown ("God revealed to me in a dream that thou art a fuckin' liar").

I've had Jews argue to me that this loophole was severe naivete on Jesus's part...

679 nonic  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 3:30:24pm

Just so ya'll can get a step ahead and be ready for the next phase ----

The recanting is necessary for Williamson to be authorized to fulfill his ministerial duties, i.e., to become a bishop in the RC. Official Church teaching forbids anti-Semitism and recognizes the Holocaust. It is not a dogma of faith --- one can be a Catholic without agreeing. But one cannot function as a priest or bishop without affirming this teaching.

It is not a matter of Pope Benedict XVI , as the NYT claims, "responding to global outrage," [Link: www.nytimes.com...] It is all part of a long process to end the schism, a process that began under John Paul II [Link: www.catholicnewsagency.com...]

So it isn't a response to global outrage and it isn't a "dramatic turnaround." In fact, if I'm understanding this, there hasn't been the slightest change in the Vatican's position. The reversal of Williamson's ex-communication stands, whether he recants or not. He just can't be a bishop in the RCC unless he recants. That's supposed to be news?

Sounds to me like it's the Pope's critics who have backed off ... on the flimsy excuse of a rewording of the same old story. Feh!

re: #681 Lynn B.

No, there very likely hasn't been. Why should there be? The Pope and the Church are not Holocaust deniers. That was just an impression the media attempted to stir up.

As for "responding to global outrage," :-), the Pope sees himself answering to God, not the international press.

The reversal of Williamson's ex-communication stands, whether he recants or not. He just can't be a bishop in the RCC unless he recants.

The Pope has said (and I think in connection to this very matter) that he prefers "the medicine of forgiveness instead of the medicine of punishment." The Pope's goal is to re-unite a schismatic sect, because while it exists, it leads would-be Catholics astray.

Excommunication is an individual punishment. Medieval, really. And it was automatic back when the schism happened, 1970 for Marcel Levebre the leader of this group, and 1988 for these particular men. The Pope has said he wanted to extend this generosity to the individual men in hope that they will respond by conforming their positions to Vatican II as a first step to healing the schism.

Sounds to me like it's the Pope's critics who have backed off ... on the flimsy excuse of a rewording of the same old story.

Well, the media gave the impression they wanted. Look at all the people (here and elsewhere) eager to attack the Church over this. So the media is backing off because they "won." :-)

A point of understanding is required here. There are no unforgivable sins in the Roman Catholic Church. Yes there is excommunication, does that sound like an unforgivable sin? Yes; we must admit it looks as though the excommunicated committed an unforgivable sin, but here we have an excommunicated Bishop being forgiven. Every one has a path to seek and obtain forgiveness within the Church. The price of the churches forgiveness is in the hands of the, local Priest, Bishop or the Pope. Can the Pope make mistakes? Yes he can, but the whole point of Roman Catholic Forgiveness is "Mistakes don't count, only how we recover."
It is hard to grant or see one we truly despise forgiven, that has more to say about us as individuals than as a collective. "Ti's human to sin; Divine to forgive."
