Vatican: Holocaust Denying Bishop Must ‘Recant’

It took a worldwide outcry, but the Vatican is now saying that Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson must recant.

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican on Wednesday demanded that a prelate who denied the Holocaust recant his positions before being fully admitted as a bishop into the Roman Catholic Church.

It also said Pope Benedict XVI had not known about Bishop Richard Williamson’s views when he agreed to lift his excommunication and that of three other ultraconservative bishops Jan. 21.

Just one problem: does anyone really believe that Williamson can make this all OK by mouthing, “I recant?” Why in the world would anyone trust the word of a Holocaust denier?

This is more than damage control. An "absolutely unequivocal and public" recantation is just that. If he's lying or equivocating, it should be easy to tell. I hope it is done (if the worm can bring himself to do it) live and posted on YouTube.

While there is every reason to doubt Williamson's sincerity, I see no reason to question Benedict's on this.

From Williamson's statements that I've watched and read online, I'm willing to lay even money that he won't do it. He's far too committed to his sick, whacko views.

He was not consecrated by the RCC, only by that splinter group.
So 'Bishop' is a curtesy title - he has no office in the RCC.

As for why he should be 'valuable' - he is a liability to the Vatican, who allowed him and three others back into the fold.
He is 'valuable' for all those who'd rather bash the Vatican than deal with the real problem of antisemitism in their states.

Oh - and now that this 'bishop' is back in the fold, he can be properly disciplined by the RCC, something which was not possible when he was excommunicated.

Btw - he's not held his pernicious views since just after he was re-admited. He held them before - why was there no outcry then?

The Pope is trying to squash a schism over Vatican II. If the Church embraces those that broke away and were subsequently excommunicated, the Church is hoping to exercise some control over them. We will see how effective this is, since it is now center ring in the media circus. Never mind that the circus will now make this an almost impossible endeavor.

He was never consecrated as a Bishop in the Roman Catholic Church, but by the Society of St. Piux X, a group that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Accepting the title of Bishop from this splinter group was the grounds for his excommunication by Pope John Paul II.

He was probably excommunicated because he taught stuff against the RCC - I think Pope John Paul II excommunicated him.

He was apparently excommunicated because he was made a bishop by someone who wasn't authorized to do so, but he called himself a bishop anyway. More I don't know.

As to excommunicating, nobody gets excommunicated because they want to be. It is only people who don't want to be.

There are atheists who want to leave the church completely and not be "counted" by the Vatican as their flock. Just for fun they have written asking for that saying that they have done the things it takes to be excommunicated (there's a list, nothing obscene), but they are never acknowledged.

Not very good taste in my mind, as an atheist, but the point is that it is not something one can invite.

This isn't really a change in the Vatican's position. he is still reinstated (excommunication reversed) but they are saying if he wants to advance he will have to recant. It really doesn't change anything.

The claim was filed, records stated, because of a disagreement regarding liability for: temporary disability indemnity, permanent disability indemnity, reimbursement for medical expense, medical treatment, compensation at proper rate and rehabilitation. Additional records show that on Sept. 25, 2008, a petition was filed to compel Suleman to attend a medical exam with "petition to terminate liability for temporary disability indemnity."

No other details about Suleman's case were available. Since the birth last week of the octuplets, Suleman has come under criticism for undergoing fertility treatment despite the fact she already had six children and was a single mother. It does not appear that Suleman was working, though she has been attending school at Cal State Fullerton, where she was pursuing a master's degree in counseling.

Meanwhile, officials at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center said Tuesday afternoon that the octuplets continue to do well. "The world might see them as octuplets, but in our [unit] they are eight individual babies with their own personalities and needs," said Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist. Officials said the babies were breathing on their own and receiving a nutritional supplement intravenously that is tailored to their individual needs. They are also being fed donated pasteurized breast milk.

News organizations were staking out the hospital in Bellflower, Calif., and the modest, three-bedroom house on a cul-de-sac here where Ms. Suleman lives with her parents, Angela and Ed Suleman, and her other children.

Here's what concerns me from that story:

Her daughter "is not evil, but she is obsessed with children. She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously, she overdid herself," her mother, Angela Suleman, told the Los Angeles Times. She decided to have more embryos implanted in hopes of having "just one more girl."

I'm seriously concerned about that. If she wanted to make sure she could have a girl, she could have adopted one, as an earlier lizard suggested.

This isn't really a change in the Vatican's position. he is still reinstated (excommunication reversed) but they are saying if he wants to advance he will have to recant. It really doesn't change anything.

Respectfully, I think that's not true. The reversed excommunication simply allows him to receive the sacraments like any ordinary Catholic. It did not "reinstate" him as a bishop, since his bishopric was never recognized in the first place.

The Vatican said Wednesday that, while Williamson's excommunication had been lifted, he still had no canonical function in the church because he was consecrated illegitimately.

"Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to episcopal functions within the church, will have to take his distance, in an absolutely unequivocal and public fashion, from his position on the Shoah, which the Holy Father was not aware of when the excommunication was lifted," the statement said.

If he doesn't recant he remains at most a simple priest.

All of the coverage over this story just seems like potshots at the Catholic Church. I have a strange feeling that if it Professor Williamson rather than "Bishop" Williamson that this would be a non-story, and even if it was that the institution that employed him would be getting praise by some journalists for their daring and bohemian open-mindedness.

Fact of the matter is, is that Christianity has a long history of antisemitism, and for the majority of history the Catholic Church was synonymous with Christianity in the Western world.

It seems very unlikely that these pseudo-clergy and outright actual clergy that are antisemites today learned it from Church doctrine but walked into the fold carrying those views from the culture around them.

No one (in the mainstream media, academia et al) wants to point the finger at themselves, their friends or their colleagues. Christians are easy targets, and in particular Catholics who are well disliked by many Protestants.

Of course you are going to wind up with antisemitic clergy in the Catholic Church. I dare say though that you are going to find a lot more antisemites coming from, I dunno, England (like Williamson), or France, or Quebec, where Jew hate is politically chic.

Where Williamson is getting criticism from journalists, politicians, and other theologians, I see suspiciously little criticism for the outright genocidal lunacy of (largely secular) protesters and pundits, whom also probably harbor no love for Catholics on top of it all.

Williamson truly deserves the scorn and criticism he gets, but I'd really prefer it come from sources that don't make common cause with, or outright ignore their own disgusting Troofers, Holocaust deniers and revisionists of all stripes.

Williamson's 'sin' in the eyes of the ones harping on him the loudest in the media isn't that he is an antisemite, or purveyor of vile conspiracy theories. It is that he is a far-right wing theist that does these things. Like I said, if it were Professor Williamson, we probably wouldn't even know he exists.

I really haven't a clue as to why the Williamson individual was excommunicated in the first place (imo, that was a good idea -- especially given that this was a bishop (!?); and why the reinstatement is even more baffling (isn't Williamson still a priest?) -- but one thing does seem somewhat clear -- and that's is this -- the Pope does X, outcries ensue, then the Pope back-tracks. Maybe to avoid this pattern the pope should consider a bit more carefully that initial impulse to do X...

I believe books could be written from this alone. PhD could be gotten. The media can be analysed. The entire concept of a "peace process" can be debated.

As rockets fall on Israel, the Times still wants too elicit tears for the dead Gazans.

And in the story is this sentence:

Palestinians almost never question the legitimacy of firing rockets at Israeli civilians as a form of resistance, and seemed shocked that Israel would go to war over it.

We used to go down to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) a few times each year. It's a little area on the Gulf of California in Sonora, MX. I would be hesitant to travel there now. Border cities like Nogales or Agua Prieta...forget about it. The drug cartels are taking over and we better do something about it soon, or Mexico will turn into a nightmare.

Actually, I was sitting here feeling really, really sorry for someone. There are 300 million Americans, give or take a few million. I, personally, didn't lose any jobs this month, and my husband didn't lose his job this month, nor did most of the people I know*. In fact, my brother got a promotion.

Somebody out there had a horrible month. To make this math work, there were people out there losing a job three and four times a day.

I didn't say that those stories got ignored by us. I said by those promoting the story, and specified journalists. We wouldn't know who Williamson was if he wasn't a far-right Catholic priest, but instead a leftist MP or Academic because it wouldn't be a story.

Again though. Vlaams Belang and Front National get news coverage because they are far right political organizations. If they were transnationalist leftist parties that were also racists, or holocaust deniers, we wouldn't know who they are.

I'm well aware that antisemitism and racism gets exposed on both sides of the aisle here. However, most of the left-wing seething hatred you will notice comes from Zombie's photojournalism, other independent outlets, or op-eds and not pulled from Yahoo news, the headlines of major newspapers/wire services.

The larger issue still stands though, that without antisemitic Brits, you don't get antisemitic British Priests. That there is an issue with antisemitism in the Church is a given in; that there is a problem with antisemitism everywhere else is obfuscated.

I know someone tried to restrict communion - but that didn't work out when Kerry just went and took communion anyway.

If the church excommunicated a few more liberal catholic politicians, I'd be impressed.

We used to go down to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) a few times each year. It's a little area on the Gulf of California in Sonora, MX. I would be hesitant to travel there now. Border cities like Nogales or Agua Prieta...forget about it. The drug cartels are taking over and we better do something about it soon, or Mexico will turn into a nightmare.

You know I was thinking the same thing recently, that "we" meaning the US has to do something about this and soon. But when I asked myself what the heck we could do, I could not come up with one single reasonable thing we can do. And just pouring more money into Mexico will not work. An across the border invasion is not in the cards even if Mexico asked us to come over and help.

Nope, no difference what so ever. Some of the crap dished by the left was over the top. i.e. GW went to war over oil. He may have poorly served by his advisers and got bad intelligence, but he did what he thought right to protect the country.

Remember that Saddam was an eco-terrorist having set 700 oil wells on fire during the first Gulf war. It was predicted that it was going to take years to put them out, because of the technology involved. Then oilman Red Adair developed a new process and was able to put out a well fire in a few hours instead of a few weeks per fire.

There were a total of 16 reasons that we took Saddam out. When he gassed the Kurds from the air - he killed 15,000 people in one week. Then he sent teams to villages to execute the sick and dying. When that didn't kill enough Kurds he continued the genocide by bussing a total of 180,000 people out into the desert to pre-dug graves where his military machine gunned, or had executed almost a quarter million people.

In one grave they found 86 children - 25% of whom had been buried alive without any bullet wounds. The anthopologist in charge of the grave excavation said there were mass graves "as far as the eye could see."

Saddam was a genocidal MONSTER with tons of yellow cake working towards an Apocalypse. Like a serial killer fiddling with a new gun that he can't quite figure out yet.

I like GWB, but among one of his biggest mistakes was basically ignoring Mexico and most of Latin America. They are our neighbors and as the report you posted listed, our biggest trading partners. Mexico needs to be stabilized or it will certainly spill over to our side of the border. The violence already has. My hometown, Phoenix, is now the "Kidnapping Capitol of the USA" and it is all Mexican on Mexican crime. So, look to El Paso, Phoenix, Tucson....that is what is coming to your town or city soon if Mexico falls apart and becomes a Narco-State like Columbia was in the 80's.

Just to chime in on the Salt Lake thing, as a former Salt Lake resident--

Is it only terrorism if more than one person perpetrates the crime? Granted, it's a little harder to stop a plot that is hatching between the voices in one man's head, but the dead are still dead, their families still grieve, and the motivation was still the same.

The Unabomber was a terrorist.

Now, if we are discussing only the specific type of terrorism being perpetrated by large, organized groups, just say so. (I was going to say Islamofacist groups, but I didn't want to leave William Ayers out).

Perhaps there should be a term to differentiate between group terrorism, and solo terrorism.

I like GWB, but among one of his biggest mistakes was basically ignoring Mexico and most of Latin America. They are our neighbors and as the report you posted listed, our biggest trading partners. Mexico needs to be stabilized or it will certainly spill over to our side of the border. The violence already has. My hometown, Phoenix, is now the "Kidnapping Capitol of the USA" and it is all Mexican on Mexican crime. So, look to El Paso, Phoenix, Tucson....that is what is coming to your town or city soon if Mexico falls apart and becomes a Narco-State like Columbia was in the 80's.

I'm hoping the geography and the road system prevents any large scale problems in NM....of course once here there are few places to go really, unlike Pheonix or on up through Texas...

Possibly, since there are more Muslims per capita in Germany than in the US, since there are radical Muslims that have no problem hitting the streets and demonstrating violently and Germany is closer to other countries where radical Muslims can slip into Germany with in hours.

You have to concede that the quality of education in Chicgo public schools has become disgraceful.
The system has semi-litterate teachers graduating kids that can't fill out a job application. The teachers do not have to test out in their subject & a prference is given to graduates of Chicago State for hiring & that is where essay questions are consdiered cruel & unusual

Removing the excommunication did not give them back their power to say Mass, but it did give them the right to take communion. An excommunicated Catholic may not receive any of the sacraments of the Church, including the Eucharist, marriage, and Christian burial.

I think he should have to meet with Holocaust survivors and tell them to their faces that they are not Holocaust survivors and that their families were not gassed or murdered in another method by the Nazis. I would really, really like for that to happen. Actually, I would like for him to take a tour of the camps with maybe Rabbi Yisrael Lau and then go to Israel to Yad Vashem and meet with survivors. People like this need to meet face to face with the Holocaust suvivors who are still alive before they are all gone. And no, I don't think it would necessarily change his mind, but I think that people like him are absolute cowards who do their antisemitic denials in the relatively safe comforts of their own spaces, never having to look people in the eye. Actually, what we really need is to stabilize the country by stopping the demand for illegal drugs here in the USA. That is what is fueling the scumbag drug cartels....demand from the USA. That will be hard to do.

If you take a Mexican out of Mexico and put him here in the USA, he or she thrives (for the most part). Mexico could be a net oil exporter if they chose to do so. They used to be, but they let their infrastructure degrade to the point that they now have to import some refined products. They have tons of proven reserves. However, the government took over their oil industry and pretty much ran it into the ground for the last 10-20 years.

The only way the Mexican problem is going to be solved is if the Mexican government steps up to the plate and pitches in and helps out big time. One place they could start is to sell the oil companies back to private entities and let them get that part of their economy back on track.

The other issue is drugs. Until Mexico actually declares war on the drug cartels, nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever be accomplished. It will be bloody and long, but they can take their country back if they really want to.

In all seriousness, if you voted for Obama, how do you qualify your fiscal conservatism?

It is no secret, legitimately judging him by his past performance, what his political ideology is.

What track record he has is indisputable. By this, I mean it is probably farther left than any previous President in history. Huge swaths of the private sector stand to be socialized, or at the very least, regulated to the point of not possessing any autonomy.

How do you square this?

I wish he were more fiscally conservative, but for me, the social issue was more important. I'm counting on him either moving to the middle, or the GOP restraining him, much as they are with cleaning up the stimulus bill.

There are 2 Shoprites on LI, in Plainview, have a few different brands of hand-made Schmurah. They also have coupons for them in the circular. We do our shopping for Pesach there, as one of our sons and his family live nearby.

Christians are supposed to forgive those who say they've repented. We're even supposed to forgive serial backsliders (Matthew 18:21-35). If Williamson claims to have recanted, the Pope doesn't have much doctrinal choice but to re-communicate him, assuming he rules out a papal-infallibility smackdown ("God revealed to me in a dream that thou art a fuckin' liar").

I've had Jews argue to me that this loophole was severe naivete on Jesus's part...

Its such an easy out, its like Saudi Arabia retraining Jihadists by getting them to say they renounce JIhad. BS. This guy may recant but he still believes it, for which he should be judged an idiot but he still has a right to his idiotic beliefs. I also hate the idea of arresting people for holocaust denial. Just treat them like idiots, like troofers, but arrest them? In my rich fantasy life, would love to see Noam Chomskey arrested for on charges of first degree scumbaggery but would never live in a society that would actually arrest him.

No, there very likely hasn't been. Why should there be? The Pope and the Church are not Holocaust deniers. That was just an impression the media attempted to stir up.

As for "responding to global outrage," :-), the Pope sees himself answering to God, not the international press.

The Pope has said (and I think in connection to this very matter) that he prefers "the medicine of forgiveness instead of the medicine of punishment." The Pope's goal is to re-unite a schismatic sect, because while it exists, it leads would-be Catholics astray.

Excommunication is an individual punishment. Medieval, really. And it was automatic back when the schism happened, 1970 for Marcel Levebre the leader of this group, and 1988 for these particular men. The Pope has said he wanted to extend this generosity to the individual men in hope that they will respond by conforming their positions to Vatican II as a first step to healing the schism.

A point of understanding is required here. There are no unforgivable sins in the Roman Catholic Church. Yes there is excommunication, does that sound like an unforgivable sin? Yes; we must admit it looks as though the excommunicated committed an unforgivable sin, but here we have an excommunicated Bishop being forgiven. Every one has a path to seek and obtain forgiveness within the Church. The price of the churches forgiveness is in the hands of the, local Priest, Bishop or the Pope. Can the Pope make mistakes? Yes he can, but the whole point of Roman Catholic Forgiveness is "Mistakes don't count, only how we recover."
It is hard to grant or see one we truly despise forgiven, that has more to say about us as individuals than as a collective. "Ti's human to sin; Divine to forgive."
