In the long run it does. The problem is that we have to live our lives in the short run and that means the creationists can do our nation a lot of damage before they go down swinging. That's why I'm grateful to Charles for the evolution threads; He shows the science of evolution and then allows the creationists to try (and fail) to refute it.

HOW TO GET RID OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

1. Answer the door naked and carrying weaponry. (immediate results)

2. Pretend to be the slowest talking person in the world and see how long their spirit of charity lasts.

3. Answer every one of their questions with "What do you mean by that?" This might take a while, but you and your loved ones can have fun placing bets on how long it takes for them to get flustered and leave.

4. Ask them to reconcile Revelation 1 and 22 for the "Alpha & Omega's" identity (Jesus or God), repeat constantly. You may have to resort to another method to actually get rid of them, but this will definitely make them sweat.

5. Excuse yourself from your sitting room (or wherever) ...and don't come back.

6. Make a series of increasingly reprehensible fake phone calls. (booky, order for pornography, drug deal, obscene call, and if they are STILL there, a tearfull confession to the police for the murder of the last Witnesses who visited you.)

7. Pick an oft-repeated word in their lexicon (God, Jesus, heaven, it, the etc.) and giggle whenever they utter it. If they ask you what's going on, say "nothing, why?" in very even tones, and giggle again.

8. Same as #7, except say "beep" instead of giggling.

9. (males only) Feign an intense interest in their speil. Part way through, begin putting on make-up, hosery, a dress, the whole works. (make encouraging noises [uh huh, I see...] throughout and if they ask you what you're doing, pull a #7) If they're still there when you are done, Ask them if they would please kindly leave as you have a hot date in ten minutes.

10. Look smug and tell them that your God can beat up their God.

re: #85 jcw46

Comcast suuuucccckkss for an internet connection. I had it and it kept dropping my vonage calls. blam no click, no dial tone just dead air and it would take a reboot of my phone router and about 5 minutes or so to get it back. I had my vonage on another dsl and it worked perfect so it wasn't vonage or my equipment. canceled Comcast and went verizon. (cheaper too) ta-da. back to no dropped calls.
they say they play around with your packets to control the traffic cause the pipes are only so big. I call b.s. I think they're trying to cut vonage off so they can sell their voip. they also shilled for oshit during the election. I'm down to basic cable and they can go %&^*))) themselves.

No, I'm not talking about the connection. They have a lousy web based FTP styled publishing site, and it doesn't like Safari. I have called them and they said that their different company sites are written to work best on EI.

So, when I use Safari to upload a file, I have to be careful about file names, because it seems that Safari is padding URL's with something other than ascii 30's (spaces) or adding spaces to the end of URL's or file names when I upload them

I'm not sure, but it's touchy.

I have NO problem with Comcast itself, I've had it since probably day one, moved the account to a number of different places I have lived, customer service for me is fine.

This is some sort of Safari issue, not Comcast.

The e-mails and the people who sneak in here to post creationist bullshit on the evolution threads must be very trying, very aggravating and if they are threatening, maybe even scary.

But Charles you know you are doing the right thing.

If the anti-science bunch "takes over" the political party that represents the conservatives in this country, then the rest of us who are conservatives (not necessarily you or others here, but people like me) are lost. We will have nowhere to turn for representation of those things we think are important. And the Republican Party will indeed begin to lose elections.

They must be exposed. And you are doing it. I wasn't certain for awhile how big of an issue it was, and I am finding that it is indeed a bigger problem than I knew. And so this must be exposed, so that people like me, who were unaware, can be made aware and possibly to avoid a complete fanatical takeover of the Republican party.

I haven't said this as elegantly or eloquently as I wanted to, but you get the drift.

Please keep up the good work.

Yea, it could be a linefeed/carriage return sort of problem, but it is certainly something I can't see at the end of that string of characters that is getting clipped and pasted from the Safari address bar to the comment text box.

Or it could be something that Charles little pop-up URL entry box is padding at the end?

I don't know. Since I don't know what Charles' code is doing, I don't know if it is that "link entry" function or what?

is a little bit wrong: the Republican Party is already losing elections. But it's really NOT because of creationism or how conservative someone is or isn't, it's because the conservative "movement" if you will within the Republican Party hasn't really advanced any new ideas in a while. We all - or at least most of us - used to bitch and moan that the Dems' weren't offering anything POSITIVE (once they took back Congress while Bush was POTUS) or NEW in the way of ideas, if not principles. The Republicans desperately need to come out with a true "agenda" or "Platform" - I'm sure its one that not everyone will agree with - that is indeed looking forward and putting forth positive ideas on the issues that are ALWAYS with us.
But I certainly agree with you about Charles and his efforts out here to "out" creationism. There are a number of things the Republican Party doesn't need, IMO, and creationism is certainly near the top of that list.

Post-Soviet nations to form military force

A Russian-led bloc of post-Soviet nations has agreed to establish a rapid-reaction military force to combat terrorists and respond to regional emergencies, Russian media reported Wednesday.

The decision came a day after reports that Kyrgyzstan is planning to close a strategically important U.S. military base that Washington uses to transport troops and supplies into Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, the Collective Security Treaty Organization — made up of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan — decided on the rapid-reaction force at a Kremlin summit, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported.

The group’s security council “spent a long time discussing the central issue of forming collective reaction forces and, generally, of rapid reaction to possible threats,” said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, according to Russian news agency Interfax.

“Everyone agreed that the formation of joint forces is necessary,” he said.

. . .

Russian media reported that the force will be used to fight military aggressors, conduct anti-terror operations, battle regional drug trafficking and respond to natural disasters. The force will be based in Russia under a single command, with member nations contributing military units.

Barack Obama to Keep Campaign Promise; Will Meet with Hugo Chavez

President Barack Obama will reportedly meet face-to-face with Venezuelan dictator and avowed enemy of the United States Hugo Chavez later this year when he attends the Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. During the Democratic primary campaign, Obama said that he would meet in person with the heads of Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, and Venezuela without pre-conditions during his first year in office. While he spent the rest of the campaign trying to walk back that promise, saying that there would be unspecified "preparations" before he met with any of the five rogue nations' leaders, apparently this is one campaign promise President Obama intends to keep.

OOO. OOO. do you mind answering a coupla questions?

They don't have a lot of technical info about it. Particularly about the installation.
Do they have it setup so that you can revert to your original browser?

that's what's holding me back. I am reluctant to try something that doesn't inform you what will happen when you install. They love telling you how great it is and spend like 15 minutes worth of video to do so but nowhere could I find a readme about what the install will do. I don't want to try this and then find I can't go back to I.E.
When MS was touting I.E. 7, the only reason I tried it was because they made a point of telling you that you could easily revert. (which I did btw as I didn't like the loss of viewing space that all the extra bells and whistles took.)

Also, do they manage to import your favorites wo glitches or mixups?

Mine's about the same P4, 3.0ghz, hyper threading, XP pro, 1 gig (that the max it takes).

The Hyper-threading uses memory to build a dual virtual core, a virtual processor, that's was nice oh, 6-8 years ago, stealing some memory for handing off some processing, but with the size of web pages now a days, 1 gig doesn't spread around to far.

That's why I like Safari, it has great memory management, and doesn't collect garbage and leave unaddressed pages hanging in la-la land.

Created this the other day, thought I would post it before it got too stale.

An ode to Obama's cabinet picks to the tune of Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Dead Man.

My Nominees are news magnets
My Nominees got bad habits
They're hot, can't stop,
embarrasing, regrettable,
I screwed up, this cabinet smells
These picks are my own private hell
Dirty Clinton, gettin' down,
Taken cash from outta town.
S-O-S she's actin' tough.
Don't Confirm, she'll fuck us up.
No one really knows if she's good
or if she's not, but she's
Headin' to the MidEast tonight!

They like to flaunt the law
They grind it 'neath their shoes
Don't even care if it airs
on the daily evening news,
They like to take our cash,
They're naughty you can bet,
You know what this is,
no doubt about it
It's a bad, bad Cabinet!

Obama won, Party's on,
Congress only goes along.
Confirmation, push it through,
nothing that the right can do.
No one really knows if they're
drunk or if they're stoned
But they're voting on the cabinet tonight.
I say no one really knows,
just how far they're gonna go,
But we're gonna find out later that's right.

They like to flaunt the law
They grind it 'neath their shoes
Don't even care if it airs
on the daily evening news,
They like to take our cash,
They're naughty you can bet,
You know what this is,
no doubt about it
It's a bad, bad Cabinet!

Doesn't take them long
to say Tim Geithner's right.
But does it make them wrong
to let the tax issue slide.
Let the tax issue slide.

My Nominees are news magnets
My Nominees got bad habits

Killefer's in and
now she's out
Chief Perfomance Officer
Tax lien,
there it went,
Was there more,
We'll never know.

I look around and all I see is,
no good, bad and ug-i-ly,
Man they're bad and fixed
to be, the future
Ex-Barack O-Nom-i-nee!

They like to flaunt the law
They grind it 'neath their shoes
Don't even care if it airs
on the daily evening news,
They like to take our cash,
They're naughty you can bet,
You know what this is,
no doubt about it
It's a bad, bad Cabinet!

It's a bad, bad Cabinet!

It's a bad, bad Cabinet!

Morning/Evening Lizards. I trust you are all well.

Yes, this evening's episode of LOST was grand, the whole season (so far, 4 episodes) have been chock full of good content. 13 more to go.

162 Erik The Red  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 9:53:49pm

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was trudging through the Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried towards it, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand selling ties.

The Taliban asked, “Do you have water?”

The Jewish man replied, “I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $5.”

The Taliban shouted, “Infidel! I do not need an over-priced tie! I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first!”

“OK, OK” said the old Jewish man, “It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant. It has all the ice cold water you need. Shalom.”

Muttering, the Taliban staggered away over the hill. Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead… “Your f***ing brother won’t let me in without a tie!”

re: #142 reine.de.tout
Oh I definitely agree with you reine - creationism seems to at least be in the news more often these days and could very well undermine the Republican Party as a "serious" political organization.
It's one of the reasons I'm so glad Charles stays on their ass the way he does.
But - LGFer Freetoken today and yesterday, linked to some Gallup Poll numbers that seem to indicate that a large percentage - a majority - of Republicans believe in creationism NOW - as do a surprising number - though a distinct minority - of Democrats.
Aside from challenging the Conservative part of the Republican Party I think Creationists - EXACTLY LIKE BEN STEIN - are seriously undermining our educational system every bit as much as Billy Ayers is, but just from a different perspective and, one would hope, with a different goal.
We just CAN'T allow creationism to be taught in Public Schools. And I put that on the same plane as I do in not allowing Billy Boy Ayers to get away with the bullshit socialist agenda. Or the agenda that would, ultimately, lead to everyone being a "victim" of something and no one being required to take responsibility for their own action.

169 logboy  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 10:00:35pm

I apologize for the length on this one...

Little Red Hen called all of her Democrat neighbors
together and said, ‘If we plant this wheat, we shall
have bread to eat. Who will help me plant it?’

‘Not I,’ said the cow.
‘Not I,’ said the duck.
‘Not I,’ said the pig.
‘Not I,’ said the goose.

‘Then I will do it by myself,’ said the little red hen, and so she did.

The wheat grew very tall and ripened into golden
grain. ‘Who will help me reap my wheat?’ asked
the Little Red Hen.

‘Not I,’ said the duck… above my pay grade.
‘Out of my classification,’ said the pig.
‘I’d lose my seniority,’ said the cow.
‘I’d lose my unemployment compensation,’ said
the goose.

‘Then I will do it by myself,’ said Little Red Hen,
and so she did.

At last it came time to bake the bread. ‘Who will
help me bake the bread?’ asked Little Red Hen.

‘That would be overtime for me,’ said the cow.
‘I’d lose my welfare benefits,’ said the duck.
‘I’m a dropout and never learned how,’ said the pig.
‘If I’m to be the only helper, that’s discrimination,’ said the goose.

‘Then I will do it by myself,’ said Little Red Hen.

She baked five loaves and held them up for all
of her neighbors to see. They wanted some and,
in fact, demanded a share.

But the Little Red Hen said, ‘No, I shall eat all
five loaves.’

‘Excess profits!’ cried the cow.
(Nancy Pelosi)
‘Capitalist leech!’ screamed the duck.
(Barbara Boxer)
‘I demand equal rights!’ yelled the goose.
(Jesse Jackson)
The pig just grunted in disdain.
(Ted Kennedy)

And they all painted ‘Unfair!’ picket signs and
marched around and around the little red hen,
shouting obscenities.

Then the farmer (Obama) came. He said to the
little red hen, ‘You must not be so greedy. We
have to ‘Share the Wealth.’

‘But I earned the bread,’ said Little Red Hen.

‘Exactly,’ said Barack the farmer. ‘That is what
makes our free enterprise system so wonderful.

‘Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as
he wants. But under our modern government
regulations, the productive workers must divide
the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy
and idle.

‘Like I told Joe the Plumber. We have to ‘Share
The Wealth.’ Your wealth, that is.’

And they all lived happily ever after, including
the little red hen, who smiled and clucked, ‘I am
grateful, for now I truly understand.’

But her neighbors became quite disappointed in
her. She never again baked bread because she
joined the ‘party’ and got her bread free.

And all the Democrats smiled. ‘Fairness’ had
been established.

Individual initiative had died, but nobody noticed;
perhaps no one cared…so long as there was free
bread that ‘the rich’ were paying for.

EPILOGUE

Bill Clinton is getting $12 million for his memoirs.
Hillary got $8 million for hers. That’s $20 million
for the memories from two people who, for eight
years, repeatedly testified, under oath, that they
couldn’t remember anything.

Hacker copies passport data with off-the-shelf gear

In an astonishing display of the vulnerability of modern identification technology, Chris Paget, an "ethical hacker," assembled $250 worth of electronic equipment that allowed him to scan and copy the information stored on radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips embedded in new passport cards (but not the traditional passport books), as well as in some enhanced drivers' licenses, while he drove around San Francisco. According to Paget, whose 20-minute experiment was captured on video by The Register, it would be "trivial to program" blank tags with the skimmed identification numbers -- a key part of the process of creating counterfeit cards.

Paget was able to scan passport cards from a moving car since the embedded RFID chips broadcast their information. This is a feature the State Department advertises as a convenience, saying, "With RFID technology, Customs and Border Protection inspectors will be able to access photographs and other biographical information stored in secure government databases before the traveler reaches the inspection station."

I agree that you can grab a "snapshot" of a nation's history over any given 200 year period and it will perhaps enable you to UNDERSTAND that nation better, but I'm not sure if it's any GREAT value as a predictor of future events or that nations reaction to future events.

Two old ladies, Sunny and Tina, were outside their nursing home having a smoke, when it started to rain.

Tina pulled out a condom, cut off the end, put it over her cigarette, and continued smoking.

Sunny: "What's that?"

Tina: "A condom."

Sunny: "Where'd you get it?"

Tina: "You can get them at any chemist"

The next day, Sunny hobbled into the local chemist and announced to the pharmacist that she wanted to buy a pack of condoms.

The guy looked at her strangely (she was, after all, in her eighties), but politely asked what brand she preferred.

"Doesn't matter," she replied, "as long as it fits on a Camel."

The pharmacist fainted.

When we sent the samples from your wife to the lab, the samples from another Mrs. Smith were sent as well and we are now uncertain which one is your wife's. Frankly, that's either bad or terrible."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, one Mrs. Smith has tested positive for Alzheimer's disease and the other for AIDS. We can't tell which is your wife."

"That's terrible! Can we do the test over?" asked Mr. Smith.

"Normally, yes. But you have an HMO, and they won't pay for these expensive tests more than once."

"Well, what am I supposed to do now?"

"The HMO recommends that you drop your wife off in the middle of town. If she finds her way home, don't sleep with her."

My mother, God rest her soul, would have loved that joke. (She performed vaudeville when she was young, played bass in a band until she was 80, and passed away at 81.)

She used to print jokes out and carry them around in her purse. Once she went into the local newspaper office (of her very small town), and handed the receptionist a piece of folded paper she thought was an announcement of some sort, and said she wished to have it published in the paper. The girl read it, looked at her funny and said she'd have to ask her manager and left.

The manager came out and said, "Mrs. ___, I'm sorry, but we cannot print this in the paper." My mom left, baffled, until she opened it up and realized she had given them a lewd joke to print.

She was a lot of fun. (My dad - who was very prudish - never let her hear the end of that one.)

Mostly along the lines of what some would call "stereotypes" though many stereotypes are grounded in actual and repeated incidences. I was mainly remarking out loud that countries seem to have a "persona" similar to an individual. Knowing how someone reacted to stimuli in the past can be a good predictor of the reaction to similar stimuli.

To which the man replies, "It's OK, this is my seeing eye dog."

"A Doberman?" the confused host asks.

"Yes, they're using them now. They're really quite good."

The host shrugs and says, "Come on in."

Next, the guy with the Chihuahua decides to give it a try, so he puts on his sunglasses and walks in.

The host stops him immediately and says, "Sorry guy, no pets allowed."

"You don't understand. This is my seeing eye dog," the man replies.

The host says, "Oh, come on, a Chihuahua?"

Bob, a lawyer, was driving home over the Golden Gate Bridge after spending a great day on the ocean fishing. His catch, cleaned and filleted, was wrapped in newspaper on the passenger-side floor. He was late getting home and was speeding... Wouldn't you know that a cop jumped out, radar gun in hand, and motioned him to the side of the bridge. Bob pulled over like a good citizen.

The cop walked up to the window and said, "You know how fast you were going, boy?"

Bob thought for a second and said, "Uh, 60?"

"67 miles per hour, son! 67 miles per hour in a 55 zone!" said the cop.

"But if you already knew, officer," replied Bob, "why did you ask me?"

Fuming over Bob's answer, the officer growled and said in his sarcastic fashion, "That's speeding, and you're getting a ticket and a fine!"

The cop took a good close look at Bob in his stained fishing attire and said, "You don't even look like you have a job! Why, I've never seen anyone so scruffy in my entire life!"

Bob answered, "I've got a job! I have a good, well-paying job!"

The cop leaned in the window, smelling Bob's fish, and said, "What kind of job would a bum like you have?"

"I'm a rectum stretcher!" replied Bob.

"What did you say, boy?" asked the patrolman.

"I'm a rectum stretcher!"

The cop, scratching his head, asked, "What does a rectum stretcher do?"

Bob explained, "People call me up and say they need to be stretched, so I go over to their house. I start with a couple of fingers, then a couple more, then one whole hand, and then two. Then I slowly pull them farther and farther apart until it's a full six feet across."

The cop, absorbed with these bizarre images in his mind, asked, "What the hell do you do with a six-foot asshole?"

Bob said, "You give him a radar gun and place him by a bridge!"

Yeah, me too. After I posted the comment and was composing a reply, I realized that I couldn't really put into words what I felt/know that would make sense to someone else. That's when I decided that the best thing would be for me to just back off from attempting to explain something that I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with others hearing as my poor expositions about a topic I'm not qualified at this time to put into words would make me look like an ass.

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,

There are some real possibilities for a good lyric mashup in there.

212 Erik The Red  Wed, Feb 4, 2009 10:36:24pm

A farmer was sitting on his porch one day when a young man drives in and comes to the door. "Sir, I was driving by and noticed you had a lot of milkweed in your pasture.
Would you mind if I went out and got some milk?"
"You don't get milk from milkweed!" the farmer replied. "Oh yes," said the young man, "I have a degree in Agriculture from Texas A&M, I know all about it."
"Well, help yourself," said the farmer. He soon saw the young man coming back to his car with two buckets full of milk.
The next day the farmer was again sitting on his porch when the same young man drove up.
"Sir, yesterday when I was getting milk, I noticed you had some honeysuckle in the fence row.
I wondered if you would mind if I got some honey?"
"You don't get honey from honeysuckle!" said the farmer. Again, the young man explained about his degree from A&M, so the farmer agreed to let him collect some honey.
Soon the young man came back to his car with two buckets full of honey.
The next day the same young man drove up to the farmer's house.
"Sir, yesterday when I was getting the honey, I noticed you had some pussywillow down by the creek."
The farmer said, "Let me get my shoes and I'll go with you!"

I'm not sure what you mean by wee "up", but your karma number is 320 - so for example, if 350 people liked what you had to say over time and updinged you, but thirty didn't and downdinged you, it would result in that number. Yours are probably all positives though.

But maybe that's not what you meant by wee "up"?

Yeah, me too. After I posted the comment and was composing a reply, I realized that I couldn't really put into words what I felt/know that would make sense to someone else. That's when I decided that the best thing would be for me to just back off from attempting to explain something that I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with others hearing as my poor expositions about a topic I'm not qualified at this time to put into words would make me look like an ass.
In other words I almost let my alligator mouth overload my hummingbird ass.

From the Anchoress' site:

How the stimulus plan will work
by Stan:

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Chicago contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, “$2,700.”

The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?”

The Chicago contractor whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence.”

“Done!” replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how the new stimulus plan will work.

Stan's got it right.

A little rabbit is happily running through the forest when he stumbles upon a giraffe rolling a joint. The rabbit looks at her and says, "Giraffe, my friend, Think about what you're doing to yourself! Come with me running through the forest, you'll see, you'll feel so much better!"

The giraffe looks at him, looks at the joint, tosses it and goes off running with the rabbit.

Then they come across an elephant doing coke. So the rabbit again says, "Elephant my friend, why do you do this? Think about what you're doing to yourself! Come running with us through the pretty forest, you'll see, you'll feel so good!"

The elephant looks at them, looks at his razor, mirror and all, then tosses them and starts running with the rabbit and giraffe.

The three animals then come across a lion about to shoot up. "Lion my friend, why do you do this? Think about what you're doing to yourself! Come running with us through the sunny forest, you will feel so good!"

The lion looks at him, puts down his needle, and starts to beat the shit out of the little rabbit. The giraffe and elephant watch in horror, then finally obtain the presence of mind to pull the lion off the rabbit.

"Lion," they reprimand, "why did you do this? He was merely trying to help us all!"

The lion answers, "That little bastard has me running around the forest like an idiot for hours every time he's on ecstasy!"

Hey, don't sweat it! I've been on here since before registration was started, (December of 2003) and my Karma is something like 10,000 or so but on 72,000 comments. That means that 10,000 or so folks read my comments and found them either informative or humorous and God only knows how many have given me negative ding downs.
It really doesn't make much difference in how you're perceived out here, and it's a lot more like voting for Prom King and Queen. And my positive Karma to comments ratio sucks, so I reckon I'm not popular out here. I'm pretty sure Charles instituted it so as to let people know whether or not they were posting a lot of junk or a lot of good comments, but it really hasn't worked out that way - it's really turned into a popularity contest, which I am sure is not what Charles intended it to be.
Just relax, write any comments you want to (within Charles' rules of course) and don't worry over how popular you become.Unless, of course, you're a politician and then you need to be concerned with your popularity rating! LOL!

re: #168 realwest

But - LGFer Freetoken today and yesterday, linked to some Gallup Poll numbers that seem to indicate that a large percentage - a majority - of Republicans believe in creationism NOW - as do a surprising number - though a distinct minority - of Democrats.

Over the years I had forgotten about these controversies... and when I lived in the Orient the issue was just not on the table.

Since being back here, and seeing how the public/political discourse has developed over the past couple of years, it is no wonder that Charles returned to this topic (apparently a favorite of his from years ago.)

There are threads (philosophical, not a blog entry) in American public life regarding religion, a national religion, and extreme independence from central authorities that make up the American society and is in contrast to others'.

Other societies certainly place high premiums on religion, even Christianity. E.g., Mexico, but there the Catholicism dominant society appears to keep sectarian issues from being a major player in political life (though general religious beliefs are very important in other aspects of that society.)

I'm one of those independents that some party faithful may scorn... I've registered for a party once, Republican, and that was during the Davis recall era when I wanted to vote in the Republican primary. Other than that, even though I'd say the majority of the candidates I've voted for during my life were listed under the (R) on the ballot, I hold no allegiance to the Republican party. I vote for the person.

My parents families in great part were all FDR Democrats, coming from that era. That was so common for many Americans coming from not-so-rich working families in the midwest.

To me, if the GOP does not get ahead of this issue - that of wanting to turn the clock back (or as Charles calls it, Atavism) on society, then I strongly suspect that the GOP will force many of us "independents" to go elsewhere. As a group the independents in the US often keep many Americanisms (such as desire for local government vs. central authority), but are very very averse to sectarian religious intrusions.

Those Gallup polls indicate this. Though not greatly different than the self-described Democrat respondents, the independents did poll as being more averse to the entry of creationism into public education.

For me, I am finding it hard to vote for the Republicans if their platform indicates they want to try and re-create a 1950's style America. That time is gone, most of those people are gone. We live in the 21st century, and we (as a citizenry) have to address the problems of our day. It has been 8 decades since the Scopes era - we have to move on.

I second that, kiwi. Don't worry about your own score (just checked mine, and was amazed to discover it's far higher than what I figured it would be). Just rate the comments that are worthy or significant, relative to the thread topic.

I think Charles' intent was for us to rate comments of particular poignancy, such that other readers might be drawn to that post. It's helpful when scanning through a thread, particularly deep into a thread, to find comments that are useful to the subject at hand.

I'm also pretty sure realwest is responsible for a large percentage of my karma.

re: #184 jcw46

I also believe that not only our country, but most of the world at this point has been heading steadily in one direction politically. Historically speaking, Democracy/Republicanism and all of its associated 'cousins' such as Communism and Fascism that purport derive their sovereignty from 'The People' are very new, very revolutionary forms of government. As a society I think we are still coming to terms with some of the philosophy that underpins democracy in general.

The history of democracy isn't exactly as neat and tidy as the American Revolution, in terms of righteous ideals. It is more of a story of bureaucrats serving inept Monarchs wanting to steal power than it is one of subjects demanding rights. Democracy is all about enfranchising people with political power, and we are still trying to figure out how to do that, and how much we should do it and at what expense to productivity and freedom.

The direction we are slouching seems to be steadily in dividing up power and passing it out to as many people as possible, which in this day in age of universal suffrage means an equal division of resources and capital.

It follows a direct progression from the roots of modern democracy taking power from the monarchs and passing out to the next tier in the hierarchy. I think the impasse in this process is reached when those institutions that have the power (the money), have squandered so much of it on others that it no longer has the capacity to function (ie it has so many people on the dole trying to ensure equality that it goes bankrupt).

I also believe there is a fundamental gap between the previous form of government prevalent in much of the world, Monarchy, and every modern democracy regarding the actual role of government which is something that is still being struggled over by modern societies today.

While Monarchs were sometimes paranoid, and often either pious or greedy, or both, it wasn't inherent to the system. They were only bound by their personal morality and the need to woo their vassals for the most part. In contrast the very fact that a democratic (or pseudo-democratic) government derives its power from 'the People' it has a moral duty to act on their behalf, and is also intensely interested in their behavior and perceptions.

This seems to lead to some very predictive behavior on the part of modern governments to be interested in what we think and feel (disturbingly so), and to constantly find some crusade to go on for the greater good. Democratic governments solve problems for 'the People', so it must find them; or create them.

As such I can expect the government to get larger, weaker and more inefficient as it doles out its power in the form of grossly bloated bureaucracies and largess to the public in an attempt to adhere to some extreme egalitarian morality, as has been happening at a steady clip for a while now and gaining speed. I also expect it to become more intrusive, intensely interested in molding public opinion rather than following it and significantly less interested in protecting the rights of its citizens that don't conform to the moral vision it chooses to pursue. All on the behalf of 'we the people' of course.

Carlyle had some famous criticisms and is well worth the read. So too is his forebear Edmund Burke. Namely Carlyle believed that enfranchising the people too broadly with bare slivers of political power only wound up enfranchising those institutions that informed the electorate; and that this process was largely undemocratic and would reliably result in the worst kind of people wielding political power.

He is credited with coining the term 'Fourth Estate' in reference to a free Press, as an absolute necessity in ensuring a functioning democracy. At this point I don't think his criticisms were too far off, but I don't think a free Press is really the bulwark that he thought it was unfortunately.

re: #230 freetoken
Well, my central thesis - albeit very abruptly said and without a great deal of forethought was simply that the Republican party, IF IT INTENDS TO BE "THE CONSERVATIVE" political party, needs to get it's ducks in order - and frankly that includes keeping religion out of the classroom. I'm a conservative and a Republican and have many rather strongly held political beliefs, ONE of which is that religion is and ought to be a personal choice and that the government should have NO ROLE in an individual's choosing of a religion (and soley for these purposes I would include here atheists, agnotstics, pagans, wiccans and all of the other groups of people who would cringe if you were to call them "religious") and therefore the government should not allow religion in the classroom (unless, of course, we're talking about a philosophy or comparative religion type of course - an elective).
I'm old enough to have been around in the 1950's but wasn't really politically aware back then. Now all I know is that I believe VERY STRONGLY in FREEDOM. Individual Freedom as best expressed in our Bill of Rights.
And that's as far as I can go tonight cause I'm beat and have to get some sleep!

As an addendum, based on this post you might want to read up on...

The philosophy of Essentialism (which according to wikipedia was criticized by Marx, which is only a positive endorsement in my mind), and if you get the chance do read Democracy in America.

It is in public domain and can be found on the internet for free. It analyzes America of the early 19th century from a more cultural perspective and posits certain qualities of the American people, and where those cultural imperatives might take us in the future. Tocqueville is really the beginning of American Essentialism.

IN RE: The Karma number; I've mentioned this before. Here's my example.

If you posted 500 posts and 250 people up dinged you then your karma would = 250

If you posted 500 posts and 300 people up dinged you and 50 down dinged you then your karma would also = 250

In other words the Karma figure is not a good indicator of;
your acceptance/rejection by the LGF culture.
your ability to motivate LGF'ers to ding.

The only thing it can indicate well is the negative if you say stuff that is really, really offensive to LGF'ers.

I haven't seen any really positive karma yet (like 90% or so) but there are a few here with -%'s and I mean big time like -200% and worse.

Remember you post one comment that can be dinged to the limit of the membership of LGF. Like right now about 74 folks are logged in and online so this comment, as an example, could be dinged 73 times.

Good comments are almost de riguer here and so are not singled out much for reward. Lousy comments or those in bad taste are leaped upon with great glee and fervor.

Probably the best indicator of one's karma/rationality is;
a. if you're not banned
b. you have some posts and your karma is not negative.
