Iranian Fist Just Won’t Unclench

How much more nicely can we beg them to unclench? I mean, really. Pretty please?

Iran: US must rethink policies for reconciliation.

MUNICH (AP) - Iran sternly dismissed decades of U.S. policies targeting Tehran and declared Friday that the new American administration had to admit past wrongs before it could hope for reconciliation.

The comments by Iranian parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani at an international security conference in Munich appeared to be the most detailed outline yet of Tehran’s expectations from President Barack Obama’s administration.

“The old carrot and stick policy must be discarded,” he said, alluding to Western threats and offers of rewards to coax Iran to give up nuclear activities the West views as threatening. “This is a golden opportunity for the United States.”

Is Iran’s Fist Still Clenched? Looks like a ‘yes’ on that one. We must not have found the right combination of groveling, apologies, and incentives yet.

I saw Mike Pence from Indiana on the news today talking about how pissed the Republicans are that Obama met with them and offered to listen to them, then attempted, yesterday, to beat them into submission with political rhetoric saying if they didn't pass the current bill soon, they would turn a crisis into a catastrophe.

Apparently, that little gem pretty well polarized the Republicans.

Obama is such a great bipartisan leader... ///

Which policies shall we have to abandon and apologize over:

"In the past years, the U.S. has burned many bridges but the new White House can rebuild them" if it "accepts its mistakes and changes its policies," Larijani said.

He condemned Washington's backing for Iraq in its 1980s war against Iran and its support of Israel. Larijani said those policies and others in the region failed in their declared purpose of rooting out terrorism and finding hidden weapons of mass destruction

we all know what it will take to make Iran a peas loving place. With unicorns and happy gummies for everyone. Wait, no gummies, um, happy happy joy joy candy nukes.

Koskidz side with Iran...
Would It Kill Us to Apologize to Iran for the Coup?

In contrast, acknowledging the U.S. role in the 1953 coup would not put anyone at risk of prosecution, and would not harm us in any way.

On the contrary, it could be a game-changer in U.S. relations with the Muslim world - indicating that there really is a new guy at the helm.
...
If President Obama did so, mightn't it be a "game-changer" in U.S. relations with Iran? What would it cost us to merely state the truth? And doesn't the righteous man admit fault when he has the opportunity to do so?

Many Americans would be justifiably proud of President Obama if he would apologize to Iran for the 1953 overthrow of Iranian democracy on behalf of the United States.

Past wrong one: allowing the CIA to be used as a tool of British policy to overthrow Mossadegh (to prevent nationalization of Anglo-Iraqi oil companies), leading to the installation of Reza Pahlavi as Shah.

Past wrong two: forcing the Shah's abdication in 1979 rather than working on a program of democratization (as would later bear fruit in South Korea), leading to the installation of Ayatollah Khomeini as Iran's Supreme Ruler and mad mullah in chief.

I suspect the current Iranian leaders don't see the second of those two past wrongs the way we do. And they might be upset if it was included in the list of things Obama apologizes for -- don't worry, no risk of that happening.

re: #100 mean Gene

I'm betting Hillary will get tired of groveling to no avail and quit as Sec of State.

Accurately translated from the original Persian:

“The old carrot and stick policy must be discarded,” he said, alluding to Western threats and offers of rewards to coax Iran to give up nuclear activities the West views as threatening. “Now we have the stick, and we m,ake the threates. This is a golden oppurtunity for Jughead to fall into line, or else.”

“This is a golden opportunity for the United States.”

Wow, a golden opportunity!

 Frank says:

Yes, Ladies and gentleman, even in this agricultural enviroment, We're gonna' play a love song -- This was about 1974 in Harrisburg Pa. at the Farm Show Arena, a week after the Farm show had left town... Frank never admitted to playing there, and I can't say as I blame him. But, I will never forget what a magical night that was.
