Biden: Odds Are 70-30 We’ll Screw Up

Joltin’ Joe Biden — the gift that keeps on giving — is at it again, inspiring confidence wherever he goes.

“If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, there’s still a 30 percent chance we’ll get it wrong,” he told the lawmakers at their policy retreat in Williamsburg, Va.

There's a 100% chance Biden will continue to amuse us.

2 Sharmuta  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:25:23am

Only 30%? Where did he get that number? His ass?

3 Bubbaman  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:25:39am

I say the odds are about 99.995% The closest thing to a sure thing

Biden is what your co-workers would call an optimist.

5 psyop  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:26:18am

It turns out, Biden wasn't just an honest mistake of a pick by Obama for his administration. It was merely the first of MANY bad picks...

Personally, I am thrilled that Biden is the veep. I just hope he isn't muzzled...

6 Mithrax  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:26:23am

So am I. I am very optimistic that there is a 30 percent chance that Obama will screw up, I'll even give him 40 percent.

This is the REAL flying pig moment. I totally agree with Biden.

You go Joe.

re: #2 Sharmuta

Only 30%? Where did he get that number? His ass?

That is a good question. He does seem to have a propensity to make up figures on the fly to make his arguments sound good.

Somehow I doubt there is some study that would support his 30% claim.

I think I will just call him "Thirty-Percenter" from now on.

Ummm, Joe...With the passing of the Trojan Horse bill, we don't stand a snowballs chance in Hell of avoiding a very severe and now, more lengthy recession, possible depression and hyper inflation...Zero.

He is so bad that people will only look to "the One" for guidance and leadership.
He is so bad that people will actually pray for "the One" to remain in charge.

He is so bad that if Biden does contradict "the One", people will just assume "the One" is right on the money.

... and people don't seem to realize that Obama did this on purpose.
It's like Bush-Cheney from the opposite pole viewpoint.

I think this question is a good one. I was always wondering, is Obama a fool or a knave? Biden seems like such a foolish choice. He couldn't possibly run in 2016. Did the Narcissist-in-Chief want a compliant dullard? Is Biden a seat-warmer for someone else the N-i-C has in mind to run with him in 2012? As far as I can tell, the NiC doesn't plan more than a step or two ahead. This remains a mystery to me.

Article author's bio:

Judith Warner's book, "Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety" (excerpt, NPR interview), a New York Times best-seller, was published in February 2005. "Domestic Disturbances" appears every Friday.

My wife and I were at Borders last evening.
One of the books they are hawking at the entrance now is "How to be a good grandparent". The "How to be a good parent" was also there.

On the way out, I asked my wife "If you don't know how to be a decent parent, what the hell good is reading a book going to do?"

I wouldn't take that bet because I know they will screw up. This bill is a porkfest that doesn't do anything but stimulate government growth at the expense of the private sector. It isn't stimulus, but a porkfest that only a leftist could love.

In fact, only Democrats really appear enamored with this crapulence. They talk about bipartisanship, even though the GOP uniformly opposed the House version - no GOPers voted for that monstrosity, and the only bipartisanship asked or demanded is that the GOP get out of the way and let this bill come to a floor vote in the Senate. GOPers have no reason to support this bill as it is woefully fiscally irresponsible and will saddle future generations of Americans with debt that they can ill afford.

Obama and the Democrats are now playing the fear card that this crapulence be passed immediately, even though I doubt any have read the full version of this bill. Heck, none can actually tell you what the final price tag will be, except that it will be huge. And they're the ones voting on this.

Jimmy Dean would touch this porkfest because it's offal.

I thought the odds were more like 50-50. They either will or will not screw up. Where the hell did he get 30?

The same place the Dems came up with all the crap that's actually in the bill: They just make the shit up.

When I was looking at the Stimulus Watch website, I noticed a highway interchange project in Albuquerque that's on the list. According to them, it's going to create 14,000 jobs.

Unless they plan to construct this interchange using the same technology the Egyptians used to build the pyramids, that number doesn't seem even remotely possible. My guess is that someone pulled a Biden and just made some shit up that sounded impressive.

Unfortunately, that's what they've done with the entire thing.

95 Cato the Elder  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:46:24am

Um, just a minor point, Charles: If the proposition is "we'll screw up" and the odds are 30 percent in favor, then it should read "odds are 30-70 that we'll screw up". Not 70-30.

Don't exaggerate.

Biden is one reason to pray for Obama's success.

But as long he stays VICE President, he'll be a source of amusement.

I still think he'll resign in the next few years. We'll be told it's for his health or some such, but in reality, it's because he's not a groomable replacement for 0bama should 0bama serve as president for 8 years. He will resign, and be replaced with someone who can carry on 0bama's "legacy" in 2016.

I'd say there's a 70 percent Mr. Obama will get things wrong. I have yet to see one policy and judgment he has been correct on. He must be the messiah cause Mr. Obama defies the law of averages (I guess that's what libs mean when they say he's above average?) with his wrongheaded policies and judgments.

Correctumundo. The number of jobs they talk about creating will fall far short of their expectations, but that's also the point. It will just mean that they didn't spend enough, and will demand yet more pork to throw around so that they continue these programs ad infinitum.

Think of it this way, projects that used to take 1,000 people to work on now take 100 because of technology. It's called progress. Yet, the left wants to revisit a bygone era and will destroy the economy in the process.

142,099,000 employed Jan. '09

Bottom 50% of pay 3% of the total tax load. They won't have to pay in on the stimulus they'll get paid.

With tax rebates, EIC and other paybacks lets say only the top 25% are going to shoulder the burden of the stimulus package.

25% of 142,000 is 35,500,000 working on paying it off.

$750,000,0000,000
÷ $35,500,000
---
$211,267.61

So based on campaign promises of who will pay and who get's paid. If you earn more than $65,000 a year.

You just bought a nice house.

Oh, and don't forget the interest, that's just the principal.

The line of succession is clear on that.
1 Vice President and President of the Senate Joe Biden
2 Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi
3 President pro tempore of the Senate Robert Byrd
4 Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
5 Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner
6 Secretary of Defense Robert Gates
7 Attorney General Eric Holder
8 Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
9 Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack

So, in that first nine, we've got a doddering fool whose verbal skills are legendary for their gaffes, a full blown socialist who wants to retain her own wealth by draining everyone else's; a fossil who was a former KKK member; Clinton (whose problems are too long to fit her); a tax cheat; Robert Gates - who the left would want to drum out because he oversees the Department of Defense; Holder, who approved pardons for Marc Rich; FALN terrorists, and whose take on the law is suspect; etc. etc. etc.

Artist of famed Obama poster arrested in Boston

A street artist famous for his red, white and blue "Hope" posters of President Obama has been arrested in Boston on two outstanding warrants.

Shepard Fairey was in Boston on Friday night for an event kicking off his exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Police said they had warrants on Fairey from last month after he allegedly tagged property in Boston with graffitti based on his Andre the Giant street art campaign.

On Fox now (just turned TV on)
Jeff Immelt named as economic advisory panel member.

Biden needs to raise his estimate to at least 31%.

Assuming Immelt does as good a job in that position as he has as GE's CEO, I'd say the odds just flipped to 70-30.

Under his brilliant leadership, GE's stock is currently at a 14 year low. He's taken one of the most profitable corporations in the world and run it into the ground.

An Opening to Iran?
They've sold us this rug before
by Michael Rubin
Weekly Standard
February 16, 2009

[Link: www.meforum.org...]

During the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama promised to meet the leaders of Iran "without preconditions." He appears a man of his word. Within days of his election, the State Department began drafting a letter to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad intended to pave the way for face-to-face talks. Then, less than a week after taking office, Obama told al-Arabiya's satellite network, "If countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us." The president dispatched former Defense Secretary William Perry to engage a high-level Iranian delegation led by a senior Ahmadinejad adviser.

The pundits and journalists may applaud, but their adulation for Obama's new approach is based more on myth than reality. "Not since before the 1979 Iranian revolution are U.S. officials believed to have conducted wide-ranging direct diplomacy with Iranian officials," the Associated Press reported. But Washington and Tehran have never stopped talking; indeed, many of Obama's supposedly bold initiatives have been tried before, often with disastrous results.

But as long he stays VICE President, he'll be a source of amusement.

Oh, no, I wouldn't say that. I think Obama is falling victim to his own inexperience at every possible opportunity, now that he's sitting in the big chair. Biden I would expect to be somewhat better.

But frankly, with either of them, the big problem is still going to be the antics of Pelosi and Reid.

And that's not to say that the present economic situation would be easy for anybody.

Wow. Is this Obama doing his favorite political maneuver - taking out his opponent again?
From your link:

"The U.S. attorney's office inadvertently sent the confidential document, a defense sentencing memorandum filed under seal, to The Washington Post after the newspaper requested the prosecution's sentencing memorandum." Inadvertently sent what was supposed to be a sealed document to the Post? Yeah, sure, and the Post will sell you the Brooklyn Bridge real cheap, too.

Yes- 0bama would nominate a VP and the Senate would have to vote to approve that person. Or- he could leave the post vacant in which if anything should render 0bama incapable of serving as president, the Speaker of the House would serve.

Actually, a replacement VP has to be confirmed by both houses of Congress, not just the Senate.

It's the only post that requires that process, presumably because it's normally an elected position.

If Obama goes too far astray of the Democrat party's intentions for him, starts having his own ideas about things, Biden steps in and starts shooting off his mouth as a painful reminder to Obama to remember his place or the plug could effectively be pulled on him.

By this theory, Obama will not go to the center to save his own presidency. The dems don't care about Obama's legacy, they care about their own power.

Hey Y'all - sorry to interrupt this thread, but if you have the time, could y'all write to the three "Republicans" Specter, Snowe and Collins who voted for the Pork Stimulus Plan last night (be polite, please) at the following locations (h/t Frogmarch):
Specter:
[Link: [Link: www.visi.com...]...]

Snowe:
[Link: [Link: www.visi.com...]...]

Collins:
[Link: [Link: www.visi.com...]...]

I have written to each of them and mentioned to both Collins and Snowe that this bill does precious little to stimulate the economy such that I will be unable to visit the beautiful State of Maine on my vacation this year.(h/t KT)
Specter already got back to me saying he's overwhelmed with phone calls, e-mails and faxes and therefore will only respond to e-mails or faxes from residents of Pennsylvania.
I also tried calling them at their Washington, D.C. offices and Specter and Snowe have messages that say that their voicemailboxes are full; Collins phone is off the hook (busy for over 25 minutes).
FWIW, I emphathized that the bill does precious little to stimulate the economy (and used the $15 BILLION increase in Pell Grants as an example).
Thank you for taking the time to do this; it is important.

I remember that. It was Chuck Schummer's group (DCC?) and the interns/aides got a slap on the wrist. And Schummer - nothing. I am getting pretty upset with Democrats having the freedom to flaunt their middles fingers to US laws. The corruption in the Democrat party is breathtaking.

The Dems don't have to follow the law. In their minds, they are the law:

I can totally see Harry Reid saying that on the Senate floor.

HoosierHoops would need to go in a position that mends fences, he is great at that. Goddessoftheclassroom would head education. Sharm would be high level aide drafting actual policy that makes sense. I'd need dustyvet to head veterans affairs, logboy and lT Missing Parts to get to the pentagon, Albusteve as our substitute Biden (just kidding!). Reine heading FEMA...that's off the top of my head.

Good picks. Make Render a field supervisor so he does not have to sit behind a desk.

Who is Hamas?

Hamas is a terrorist organization dedicated to Israel's destruction.

A quarter of a million Israeli citizens have been living under incessant terror attacks from Gaza with thousands of missiles fired over the past eight years.
Rather than wanting peace with Israel, Hamas wants to destroy Israel piece by piece.
Israel left Gaza in August 2005, uprooting 8,000 Israelis from their homes and removing its military installations.
Three and a half years later, Hamas has turned Gaza into an armed camp and a launching pad for terrorism and extremism targeting Israeli civilians.
Hamas didn't rebuild their infrastructure, stimulate the economy, feed the people, provide medical care, or any other positive action to help the Palestinian people. They used the money to buy black market weapons to inflict harm on Israel.

In the last eight years, more than 10,000 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel from Gaza.

By using heavily populated Gaza as a launching pad for its attacks, Hamas is guilty of a double war crime.
Not only does it target Israeli nursery schools and hospitals, it also uses Palestinian women and children as human shields.

Hamas is a cancer in the Palestinian dream for statehood.

No other nation on earth except Israel remains under the persistent attacks of an enemy whose reason for existence is the absolute destruction of the Jewish state.
No government in the world would sit by and allow its citizens to be subjected to this kind of indiscriminate bombardment.

The media doesn't talk about the 10,000 Human stories created by the eight years of bombings.
Why doesn't Jewish blood matter?

That's exactly why the State of Israel should be supported. And now more than ever!

God bless Israel,

God save Gilad Shalit,

Thank you for watching,

Best,

Holly

Hail to the Chief

"Hail to the Chief" sounds forth as the President of the United States arrives at any formal occasion.
...
It was Julia Tyler, the wife of President John Tyler, who first requested that "Hail to the Chief" be played specifically to announce the President's arrival on official occasions.

This seems to imply that it is used only at formal events.

Ever wonder how Romans felt when their empire was in collapse? We may be in their shoes.

I think we are Rome. I'm certainly not an ancient history scholar but 2 parallels jump immediately to mind.
- A bureaucracy that's become so complex and bloated and byzantine that it's effect is bureaucratic arteriosclerosis on the entire society - slowly strangling us
- Loss of respect for and participation in the military. of course I know that there are many patriotic Americans who volunteer but in general, the society has become disconnected from the military. Later Rome was similar. They had to start populating the legions more and more with foreigners. the average Roman citizen was no longer willing to perform that duty...
I know there's many more parallels...

I rarely post jokes here but, this one got to me.

The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the
IRS office. The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up
with his attorney.

The auditor said, 'Well, sir, you have an extravagant
lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you explain
by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure the IRS finds that *
believable.'

I'm a great gambler, and I can prove it ,' says Grandpa. 'How about a demonstration?'

The auditor thinks for a moment and said, 'Okay. Go ahead.'

Grandpa says, 'I'll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.'

The auditor thinks a moment and says, 'It's a bet.'

Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor's jaw drops.

Grandpa says, 'Now, I'll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite *
my other eye.'

Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn't blind, so he takes the bet.

Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye.

The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand,
with Grandpa's attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous.

'Want to go double or nothing?' Grandpa asks. 'I'll bet you six
thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee
into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere
in between..'

The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks
carefully and decides there's no way this old guy could possibly
manage that stunt, so he agrees again.

Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he
strains mightily, he can't make the stream reach the wastebasket on
the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor's desk.

The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major
loss into a huge win.

But Grandpa's own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

'Are you okay?' the auditor asks.

'Not really,' says the attorney. 'This morning, when Grandpa told me
he'd been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand
dollars that he could come in here and pee all over your desk and that
you'd be happy about it!'

Well I certainly agree that the prospects of actually having to work for a living does motivate them to stay in office!
However, I disagree that it's useless to write or call them (btw, I have it from a fairly highly placed source that congresscritters pay the most attention to faxed letters: theory being anyone who is pissed off can dash off an e-mail but someone who takes the time to actually write a letter and fax it to them probably isn't acting out of sudden fury).
Indeed, two years ago, when the Shamnestly bill was being thrown around, it was reported that MY senator, Burr (R-NC) was considering supporting it.
I wrote to him (via e-mail and fax) and encouraged a number of NC LGFer's to do the same, which they did, and he changed his vote! And I got a really nice form letter back from him saying how much my imput had made him re-think his postion. That could and probably is bullshit, BUT he did change his vote.
Don't give up communicating with them; they are supposed to be YOUR representatives, ya know?

The people in power truly feel themselves to be the elites and the chosen ones. They are not representing the people and they are not of the people anymore. This is why we get comments such as we did from Pelosi regarding the 1/2 million jobs lost each month. She really has no idea what is actually happening and for that matter doesn't even care.

Reagan would never have misspoken such.

I still wonder if the music depends on the formality of the event. Have other Presidents used music other than "Hail to the Chief"? I don't know what the protocol is but I'd guess this is nothing new.

one more thought "hail to the chief" is sort of like the wedding march. Not every bride wants the wedding march at their wedding. Too formal.

I would agree with you except for one thing. How long did it take for Rome to become the power it was at its peak? Several hundred years. We've done it in around150 years (beginning at the industrial revolution) and as such our civilization has many more weak spots than Rome ever imagined. Look at the loss of electricity in Kentucky and what that loss has done to the state. 75 years ago the same storm would have been an inconvenience to the residents. Now the Kentucky government is encouraging people to move to where there is electricity. I would hope that our country survives this latest crisis.

There is also the issue that Rome was built around an antiquated philosophy. Rome the Empire lasted through crisis that would destroy America because so much that was Rome was tied up in being Roman. Theoretically Rome ceased to be Rome with Caesar, because the idea that was Rome died. Ethnic tribalism, with a warrior autocrat instead of a Republic. Americans, as a people might be ok, like the Romans were, but like the Roman Republic, the idea that is America is much more fragile.

OT:
From here on out I propose that when a future post comes up with the term 'Fist' and 'clenched / unclenched', 'Fist' is now code for 'Buttcheeks'.

I've previously noted that the Folsom Street practice known as "fisting,"* despite its name, is actually done with the fingers and thumb extended as though you're on Step 1 of making the ASL sign for ''duck''** -- i.e., with an "unclenched fist," so to speak.

So perhaps what the Zero really meant to tell the Muslim world was, "come to us with your fist unclenched, and we will turn to you with unclenched cheeks."

* Wiki article on "fisting" has G-rated photos, but NC-17 text.
** ASL link is totally G-rated and work-safe.

I think my objection may be more that by using the "President Hussien" thing (like Pamela and Coulter) people are still sticking to the secret Muslim conspiracy theory. They think the are being witty and clever but they are painting themselves as nuts. Nobody is going to take them seriously.

Does his first interview as President being hosted by Al-Arabiya TV raise any concerns?

Are you confident that “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” (from Obama’s book Audacity of Hope) was just in a limited context of American Muslims?

Any concerns about this (from about 00:15 to 00:25), by his long term mentor and spirtual guide?

When you are absolutely certain of something, it means that all your relevent knowledge entails, without contradiction, a certain conclusion and none of your knowledge entails, without contradiction, an alternative.

If Biden has considered all his known and relevant evidence and it points to a certain outcome, what is he using as evidence for concluding that he is 30% sure the conclusion is wrong? It is a contradiction in terms resulting from either using the term certainty out of context of its actual meaning or from an arbitrary claim that he is 30% uncertain. I think it is the former given the irrationality of some of his commitments and the pragmatism of politicians these days.
