Here in Vegas, February 10th reminds us of the MGM (now Bally's) fire that killed 8 and injured 198 back on this day in 1981.

That was exactly the way I was in language class. I could translate whole paragraphs of very difficult text at a glance, just sight-reading -- but when called upon to define any individual word, or to explain the grammar, i didn't have the slightest clue. I just had the odd ability to "grok" the overall sense without knowing any of the specifics -- very similar to your "skill" at algebra.

A police officer came upon a terrible wreck where the driver and passenger had been killed.
As he looked upon the wreckage a little monkey came out of the brush and hopped around the crashed car. The officer looked down at the monkey and said "I wish you could talk."
The monkey looked up at the officer and shook his head up and down.
"You can understand what I'm saying?" asked the officer.
Again, the monkey shook his head up and down.
"Well, did you see this?"
"Yes," motioned the monkey.
"What happened?"
The monkey pretended to have a can in his hand and turned it up by his mouth.
"They were drinking?" asked the officer.
"Yes."
"What else?"
The monkey pinched his fingers together and held them to his mouth.
"They were smoking marijuana?"
"Yes."
"Now wait, you're saying your owners were drinking and smoking before they wrecked."
"Yes."
"What were you doing during all this?"
"Driving" motioned the monkey.

A few weeks back at the local library I ran across an interesting book that tied together history, microbiology, ecology, jurisprudence, theology and epidemiology, entitled Justinian's Flea - The First Great Plague and The End of the Roman Empire. A couple of paragraphs on pages 203/4, dealing with the science of understanding about the bacterium Y. pestis that causes bubonic plague, stood out for me since they dealt directly with something constantly being mentioned here at lgf:
Both advocates of Darwinian selection and their opponents are prone to cite the most benign adaptations as support for their respective positions. Favorite examples of the creationist side -- those why style themselves proponents of intelligent design or ID -- are must attracted to such complex structures as the human eye or the falcon's wing, adaptations whose intermediate forms seem to confer no real evolutionary advantage, and therefore have been created ex nihilo. The bacterial equivalent, among ID proponents, is the remarkable organic motor that the tiny organisms use as a propulsive device, the flagellum.
One of the leading lights of ID, Michael Behe, regularly cites the flagellum, a collection of more than forty separate parts including a rotor, bearings, and a spiral-shaped "propeller" that hooks onto one of the outer rings. The engine for the propeller is, like everything invented by bacteria, a triumph of physical chemistry: When a positively charged proton moves across the bacterial membrane, the charge causes the ring to turn, which in turn spins the propeller at speeds of up to 15,000 rpm. Because -- in the view of ID, anyway -- the flagellum's components are only useful as a propulsion device once all the pieces are present, it is a challenge to natural selection; a propeller without an engine, or a bearing to turn, is just so much protein. The "irreducible complexity" of the flagellum, goes this theory, is unmistakable evidence of a designing intelligence.
The weakness -- one is tempted to write "irreducible weakness" -- of intelligent design is the assumption that the component parts of the flagellum (or the eye, or wing) have always had only a single purpose, a purpose that can only be fulfilled with a complement of other parts. One can only wonder what ID makes of the Type III secretion system, a sort of multiple launch artillery system found on the outside of the Y. pestis cell membrane, since the same proton pump that drives the flagella in motile bacteria also serves as the delivery system that the bacterium uses to batter down the walls that protect their victims...and both pumps share a common ancestor.
That bacteria in general, and Y. pestis in particular, have developed such a sophisticated siege engine, using the same parts that can be used to build an outboard motor, is actually testimony to the power of natural selection rather than design.

Another good example of that is the lung. Early ID proponents claimed the mammalian lung was irreduceably complex, and the oxygenation of blood couldn't have co-evolved with a lung system bit by bit, since the circulatory suystem and the lung system would have to emerge fully formed to be of any use to each other
But then, of course, it was discovered that the early lung was originally a "flotation bladder" organ used by primitive proto-fish to stay afloat and to go up and down in the water -- it had nothing to do with oxygenizing the blood, at first. But little by little, this "side effect" become predominant and allowed the creatures to get oxygen from the air, as opposed from the water -- voila, we get land creatures.

For all my surviving friends out there.
It’s funny how the worm turns.
Here’s why…………
According to today’s regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, or even maybe the early 70’s probably shouldn’t have survived.
Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, […]
I was a preemie that was adopted. I really shouldn't have survived since I was an unwanted clump of cells.

Morning night Lizards.
A father asked his 10 year old son if he knew about the birds and the bees.
"I don't want to know!" the child said, bursting into tears. "Promise me
you won't tell me."
Confused, the father asked what was wrong.
“Oh dad," the boy sobbed, "when I was 6 I got the' There's no Santa'
speech. At 7, I got the 'There's no Easter Bunny' speech. When I was 8, you
hit me with the 'There's no tooth fairy' speech. If you tell me that
grown-ups don't really shag each other, I'll have nothing left to live for."

I was testing the children in my Newfoundland Sunday school class to see if
they understood the concept of getting to Heaven.
I asked them, 'If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and
gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?'
'NO!' the children answered.
'If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything
neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?'
Again, the answer was, 'NO!' By now I was starting to smile.
Hey, this was fun! 'Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to
all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?' I
asked them again.
Again, they all answered, 'NO!' I was just bursting with pride for them.
Well, I continued, 'then how can I get into Heaven?'
A six-year-old Newfie boy shouted out, 'YOU GOTTA BE F*CKIN' DEAD!'

Living Will Form
I, ___, being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means.
Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of pinhead politicians who couldn’t pass ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on it.
Nor in the hands of lawyers/doctors who are interested simply in running up the bills. If a reasonable amount of time passes and I fail to ask for at least one of the following:
Bloody Mary
Margarita
Scotch and soda
Martini
Vodka and Tonic
steak
lobster or crab legs
the remote control
bowl of ice cream
the sports page
chocolate
or sex
…it should be presumed that I won’t ever get better.
When such a determination is reached, I hereby instruct my appointed person and attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes and call it a day.
At this point, it is time to call a New Orleans Jazz Funeral Band to come do their thing at my funeral, and ask all of my friends to raise their glasses to toast the good times we have had.

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay
of execution for a client who was due to be hanged for murder at midnight.
His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was
feeling worn out and depressed.
As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him
about, 'What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you
been?' 'Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'. And on and on and on.
Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he went and
poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the
bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself
up the stairs.
While he was in the bath, the phone rang.
The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had
been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged
tonight.
Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go
upstairs and give him the good news.
As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her
husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.
'They're not hanging Wright tonight,' she said. To which he whirled around
and screamed, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?

Adult Resignation
I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult.
I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year old again.
I want to go to McDonald’s and think that it’s a four star restaurant.
I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks.
I want to think M&M’s are better than money because you can eat them.
I want to lie under a big tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer’s day.
I want to return to a time when life was simple.
When all you knew was colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes,
but that didn’t bother you, because you didn’t know what you didn’t know and you didn’t care.
All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset.
I want to think the world is fair.
That everyone is honest and good.
I want to believe that anything is possible.
I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again.
I want to live simple again.
I don’t want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.
I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, justice, a kind word, truth, peace, dreams, love, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.
So….here’s my checkbook, my wallet, my car-keys, my credit cards and my 401K statements.
I am officially resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this further, you’ll have to catch me first, cause,
“Tag! You’re It.”

An elderly couple, still very loving after all these years, is shocked when
the woman's doctor says she has a heart condition that could kill her at
any time. She is to avoid stress, eat right, and never, ever have sex
again-the strain would be too much.
The couple reluctantly try to live by these rules. Both get really frisky
over time, however, and the husband decides he'd better sleep downstairs on
the couch to guard against temptation.
This works for a few weeks, until late one night when they meet each other
on the stairs-she's coming downstairs, he's heading up.
"Honey, I have a confession to make," the woman says, her voice quavering.
"I was about to commit suicide."
"I'm glad to hear it, sweetie," the man says, "Because I was just coming
upstairs to kill you!"

Why Parents (Grandparents) Drink
The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had not phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialed the employee’s home phone number and was greeted with a child’s whisper.
“Hello.” “Is your daddy home?” he asked.
“Yes,” whispered the small voice.
May I talk with him?”
The child whispered, “No.”
Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your Mommy there?”
“Yes.”
“May I talk with her?”
Again the small voice whispered, “No.”
Thank you Dianne Fischer!
Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, “Is anybody else there?”
“Yes,” whispered the child, “a policeman.”
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?”
“No, he’s busy”, whispered the child.
“Busy doing what?
“Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman,” came the whispered answer.
Growing more worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the ear piece, the boss asked, “What is that noise?”
“A helicopter” answered the whispering voice.
“What is going on there?” demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.
Again, whispering, the child answered, “The search team just landed the helicopter.”
Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked,
“What are they searching for?”
Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle: “ME.”

After about 6 months, the club board received a letter from the women's
club complaining about the men, urinating on the golf course. Naturally,
they just ignored the matter.
After another 6 months, they received another letter reminding them of the
previous letter and demanding action.
After due deliberation they sent the women a letter advising them that they

Upon arriving home in eager anticipation of a leisurely evening, the
husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife. Tearfully she explained,
"It's the druggist - he insulted me terribly this morning on the phone."
Immediately the husband drove downtown to accost the druggist and demand an
apology.
Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him, "Now,
just a minute - listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm failed to
go off, so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out
to the car, but I'll be damned if I didn't lock the house with both house
and car keys inside. I had to break a window to get my keys.
Driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket. Then, about three
blocks from the store I had a flat tire. When I finally got to the store
there was a bunch of people waiting for me to open up. I got the store
opened and started waiting on these people, and all the time the darn phone
was ringing its head off. Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the
cash register drawer to make change, and they spilled all over the floor.
I got down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels - the phone is
still ringing - when I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer,
which made me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume
bottles on it, and half of them hit the floor and broke. The phone is still
ringing with no let up, and I finally got back to answer it.
It was your wife - she wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer.
And Mister, I TOLD HER!"

He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

For the record, I never actually saw the 0bama press conference. Lars Larsen carried it live on his radio show (which is how I found out about Ed Schultz getting White House press credentials) and would comment over some of 0bama's remarks and take the requisite commercial breaks for sponsors and so forth.
For someone who's supposedly articulate and charismatic as president 0bama is, there sure were and awful lot of stilted, awkward pauses and 'Uhhh...'. No they didn't carry it, but the local Fox affiliates did.

Speaking of over-reacting - here in Las Vegas, a high school student on a drill team, whose academic record had earned her a scholarship, was suspended from school today.
After drill team practice the previous day, she forgot to remove her prop rifle from the car. While at school the next day, it was spotted in her car and reported to the principal.
When our sons were still in high school they were sent home and not allowed on campus several times because of spent shotgun shells and spent 22 cartridges found in the back of their trucks after they had gone hunting the weekend before. Did not matter that they explained and had no weapons only spent cartridges. Crazy world were living in these days.

On November 21, 1980, the famous MGM (now known as Bally's) Fire began, due to faulty wiring. Due to poor fire codes at the time, none of the casinos on the Strip at the time had sprinklers, and the fire dept. was not equipped with fire trucks and equipment to get up to the top floors.
As a result, 87 people died, and 650 were injured. If you've ever heard that smoke inhalation kills more people in a fire than the flames themselves, it was because this fire's toll was so shocking that it wound up popularizing the fact.
Almost immediately, Las Vegas fire codes were changed, and mandatory upgrades in all the casinos began. The Vegas Fire Dept. were getting newer equipment and trained in newer techniques, as well.
Just 90 days later, on February 10, 1981 (28 years ago today), in the middle of its own fire upgrade, the Las Vegas Hilton caught on fire.
This time, however, it was intentionally set by Hilton busboy Philip Cline on 4 different floors. Initial news reports had actually portrayed him as a hero, telling of him trying to put out fires with a trash can full of water.
Already, because of the improved training, equipment and measure taken in just the previous 90 days, only 8 people died and 198 were injured.
While talking to various Hilton employees who were working that day, the police had used a polygraph during the questioning (records show they all consented). At one point, Philip Cline made a Freudian slip by saying that he grabbed a trash can and filled it with fire. Shortly after that, he broke down.
Further investigation led to more evidence. Philip Cline was found guilty in the courts, and is still serving 8 life sentences in jail, without possibility of parole.

They went up to the first pen and there was a sign attached that said,
'THIS BULL MATED 50 TIMES LAST YEAR'
The wife playfully nudged her husband in the ribs and said, 'He mated 50
times last year.' They walked to the second pen which had a sign attached
that said, ''THIS BULL MATED 150 TIMES LAST YEAR'
The wife gave her husband a healthy jab and said, 'That's more than twice a
week! You could learn a lot from him.'
They walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that said, in
capital letters, 'THIS BULL MATED 365 TIMES LAST YEAR'
The wife, so excited that her elbow nearly broke her husband's ribs, said,
'That's once a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one
The husband looked at her and said, 'Go over and ask him if it was with the
same old cow.'
The husband's condition has been upgraded from critical to stable and he
should eventually make a full recovery.

Hmmm... does that qualify as "doomer porn"? Perhaps not.
Three things to watch:
Banking system - unfortunately ours went too far into speculation and now it needs repaired. Expect something from Geithner and Obama within a week or two.
Over-expansion of world manufacturing capability - especially in China, but given global commerce I think it is safe to say that the presumption of what was going to be consumed vs. what will be consumed is going to be quite different everywhere.
Over-expansion of personal indebtedness esp. w.r.t. home mortgages - a true US problem, but also in the UK and some other places. Not everyone can or should own property and trying to make them do so looks like it has backfired, to the tune of trillions of dollars.
So yeah, this is quite a mess. I'm still wondering how here in California the state gov't is going to operate. Even with the hand-out via the "Stimulus" package that states will get, California is still bust.

Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson - three friends from Chicago - are a promising singing trio called The Dreamettes. Accompanied by their songwriter C.C. White (Effie's brother), they travel to New York to compete in a talent show at the Apollo Theatre. Although the girls lose this first bid for fame, their talent attracts an ambitious manager by the name of Curtis Taylor, Jr., who uses unscrupulous tactics to move the girls from backup singers of superstar James "Thunder" Early to superstars of their own. Curtis reshapes the group to "crossover" from R & B to the lucrative pop music scene. Lead singer Effie gets replaced by the more attractive Deena and is eventually dropped from the trio. The group evolves into a more sophisticated group, The Dreams, with a lighter sound and chic look. They successfully attract a "whiter" audience and The Dreams rise to international stardom. The money, fame, and adulation, however, doesn't bring them happiness.
Eddie Murphy's really good in the film too.

A woman goes on a game show trying to win the top prize of $50,000. She
keeps answering question after question, and the prize money keeps building
up.
Finally she gets to the last question and the host says, "Okay, now. For
fifty thousand dollars, here is your final question: What are the three
most important parts of a man's body?"
Suddenly the buzzer sounds. "Oh, I'm sorry," says the host, "our time is up
for today. We'll have to come back next week and ask you that question
again. If you can answer it correctly, though, you will win fifty thousand
dollars!"
So the woman goes home that night, and her husband is really excited.
"Wow, honey!" he exclaims as he hugs her. "You did great! That was
fantastic! And just wait until next week! We'll win fifty thousand
dollars!"
So the wife says to him, "Well, tell me, honey. What are the three most
important parts of a man's body?"
The husband answers, "It's the head, the heart, and the penis."
"Oh, okay," she says. "Great!"
So for the next few days, the husband keeps testing her with the question.
She's in the shower when he suddenly sticks his head in around the curtain
and barks, "What are the three most important parts of a man's body?"
She quickly replies, "HEAD, HEART, AND P'ENIS!"
"Great!" says the husband.
All week long he keeps testing her, asking her at the strangest moments,
and trying to catch her off guard. But she always gets the right answer.
Finally the big night arrives, and she is very excited as she arrives at
the television studio. The lights go on, and soon as they go on the air,
the host says to her, "All right! You've had a week to prepare! Now…for
fifty thousand dollars…what are the three most important parts of a man's
body?"
The studio audience falls to a hush. The hot bright lights are shining
down, the cameras push in for a close up, and the woman starts to get
flustered.
"U"...um...um...the...the...uh...the HEAD!"
"That's ONE!" says the host.
"Uh…uh…uh," stammers the woman, "uh…the HEART!"
The host shouts out, "That's TWO!"
Now the woman is so nervous that she can hardly think. "Oh, I know it, I
know it," she says, "it's right on the tip of my tongue…I could spit it
out…it's been drilled into me all week…"
The host says, "Aaah, that's close enough. You win!"

Titanic: Over 3 hours to read

Titanic: The story of Jack and Rose, their forbidden love, and subsequent

Clinton: The story of Bill and Monica, their forbidden love and subsequent

Titanic: Jack is a starving artist.
Clinton: Bill is a bullshit artist.
Titanic: In one scene, Jack enjoys a good cigar.

Titanic: During ordeal, Rose's dress gets ruined.
Clinton: Ditto for Monica.
Titanic: Jack teaches Rose to spit.

Titanic: Rose gets to keep her jewelry.

Titanic: Rose remembers Jack for the rest of her life.
Clinton: Clinton doesn't remember Jack.
Titanic: Rose goes down on a vessel full of seamen.

Titanic: Jack surrenders to an icy death.

And just in case the Rodriguez story might die the quick death it deserves, the President of the United States saw fit to place the A-Roid story in its proper context by comparing it on national television to the cataclysmic economic news.

Two headlines dominate the international news today.
Iran 'ready for dialogue with US'
and
Israelis vote in general election
Obviously, Iran is trying to influence the Israeli election in some way.
Then, maybe not so obviously, someone or something in our Admin must have done something to fulfill the prerequisite demands of the Mullah's; ie., apologize to the Regime; given the Mullah's a timetable for our departure from the region; and finally, provided the Mullah's with assurances of our changing foreign policy in the region - including the abandonment of our long standing and probably only true ally, Israel.

Good morning.
In market news, look for the market to open down as buyers remorse on the Porkulus Bill is taking hold already. Absolutely nothing in this bill deals with the basic toxic investment problem we have with the banks and until that problem is fixed, the rest means nothing.
I think we will get a very short term jump of the market after they pass this massive spending bill, but then the market will drop back down and we will have a very long and hard climb back out of this hole. Our grandkids will be paying for this.

0bama and the Dems know this 'stimulus' isn't going to work- this was demonstrated last night when he fielded that hard-hitting question from the 'reporter' from that pullitzer-prize winning publication known as The Huffington Post...
The one where he was asked about a South Africa-style truth and reconciliation commitee to investigate 'widespread abuses during the Bush Administration'. 0bama left the door open for such a comission that will probably get underway right around the same time the general public realizes what a dump-truck full of shit this 'stimulus' plan is and serve as a nice, juicy distraction thanks to his ball-washers in the MSM.
If Leahy's Stalin-esque show trials get underway in the next 6 months, expect them to continue to drag well into the 2010 election season...

The more he talks, the lower his popularity goes. What are the chances that he can pass a major initiative on global climate change, energy independence, or heath reform? This is his high water mark. It's all downhill from here.

Good morning. Senator Colburn on Bill Bennet's show this morning is talking about the coming health care fiasco in the stimulus bill ( the Bloomsberg.com article in the top links) among other bad things in this stimulus bill. He is saying the coming Senate vote needs 60 to pass and the fiscally conservative democrats should be targeted. For ease of scrolling - here is the link to the Bloomberg article
National Health Care Here We Come
Personally I don't think the Dems are all too worried about BO winning a second term - it's how much they can put in place NOW and what they can do to change things in the future , like Rahm being in charge of the census (!) Talk about redistricting voters to make it more "balanced" for them...

This is interesting development on rendition...
The Obama Administration today announced that it would keep the same position as the Bush Administration in the lawsuit Mohamed et al v Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc.
The case involves five men who claim to have been victims of extraordinary rendition -- including current Guantanamo detainee Binyam Mohamed, another plaintiff in jail in Egypt, one in jail in Morocco, and two now free. They sued a San Jose Boeing subsidiary, Jeppesen Dataplan, accusing the flight-planning company of aiding the CIA in flying them to other countries and secret CIA camps where they were tortured.
A year ago the case was thrown out on the basis of national security, but today the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard the appeal, brought by the ACLU.
A source inside of the Ninth U.S. District Court tells ABC News that a representative of the Justice Department stood up to say that its position hasn't changed, that new administration stands behind arguments that previous administration made, with no ambiguity at all. The DOJ lawyer said the entire subject matter remains a state secret.
This is not going to please civil libertarians and human rights activists who had hoped the Obama administration would allow the lawsuit to proceed.

There has to be a greater synergy between, let’s call it our policy leadership in this, which has been focused so much, legitimately, on targets and global architecture, almost reverse-engineered back to the means by which you can quickly deliver outcomes, and on the demand side in our economy we’re looking at potential advances in terms of 20 to 25% range if you do this across the board. It all takes cost, but let me tell you it’s probably the quickest lever you can pull given the challenges we face.

There is a thread at Kos Kooks with some awesomely awesome comments expressing disillusionment, disappointment, blah blah blah regarding Obama's rendition policy. I beg forgiveness for linking to these wackos but it has been entertaining!
I have a young friend, a fellow firefighter who was a big Obama supporter. I had not seen him for a few weeks. One of the first things he said to us when I saw him the other day. So who's ready for a new president?
He then went on to ask if I had heard what the one had said about rendition?
He said well there goes the fourth amendment. I then pointed out to him that terrorists from other countries are not afforded rights under the Constitution. he then mumbled something about well yea and changed the subject.

Whoever did this, will have to be locked up forever, in solitary confinement, because people are VERY VERY angry
One punishment mentioned on a blog here in OZ:
Put arsonist in a room with firefighters and fire survivors
Leave room for 10 minutes
Return, pick up pieces, take to morgue

One day a man came home from work to find total chaos in the house. The kids were laying outside in the mud, still in their pajamas, and empty food boxes were on the kitchen counter.
When he opened the door, he found an even bigger mess: dishes on the counter, dog food spilled on the floor, a broken glass under the table and a pile of sand by the back door. The family room was strewn with toys, and a lamp had been knocked over.
He headed up the stairs, stepping over toys, to look for his wife.
He was becoming worried that she might be ill or that something terrible had happened to her.
He found her in the bedroom still in bed with her pajamas on, reading a book. She looked up at him, smiled and asked how his day had gone. He looked at her, bewildered, and asked, "What happened here today?"
She again smiled and answered, "You know, every day, you come home from work and ask me what I did today."
"Yes" was his reply.
She answered, "Well, today, I didn't do it!"

GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions and Democrat Sen. Ben Nelson attempted several times to bring their bipartisan amendment to the floor last week. SA 239 would require local governments and businesses that receive porkulus money to use the federal E-Verify citizenship check system.
On the House side, a long term extension of the E-Verify program passed there 407-2 (Conservative Oasis).
But Democrat Sen More... Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to allow it to come to the floor. Now, we’re headed for cloture.

Another rat joins the Obama WH team...
EXCLUSIVE: Partisan dirt-digger joins WH office
Amid the furor over controversies regarding Cabinet-nominee tax problems and the seismic battle over a nearly trillion-dollar economic rescue bill, President Obama made a little-noticed appointment that is now generating intrigue.
Shauna Daly, a 29-year-old Democratic operative, was named last month to the new job of White House counsel research director. Though she is inside one of the most powerful legal offices in the land, Miss Daly holds no law degree and doesn't list any legal training on her resume.
Her sole experience has been as an opposition researcher for Democratic political campaigns: She helped dig up dirt on rivals, or on her own nominee to prepare for attacks.
The addition to White House counsel Greg Craig's staff has alarmed some Republicans, who consider it a politicization of the office, and has irritated others who say that Democratic lawmakers who railed against Republican opposition researchers in legal positions in the past are now silent.
"Daly does not have the qualifications to be holding a significant position in the White House counsel's office," said Mark Levin, a conservative lawyer and radio-show host who worked in the Reagan White House and as chief of staff for Attorney General Edwin Meese.
"Her only qualification is that she knows how to dig up dirt on other people," he said.

Great news, yes the market works. Costs go down, there is stickiness but it should be less with modern technology, so people can save money. That gives the banks more capital that they have to lend. That drives the interest rates down. That allows people to borrow and spend. Repeat cycle, without trillion dollar government spending binge.

My apologies if this came up before, but how insecure does 0bama have to be to stack the deck even more in his favor by issuing White House press credentials to Ed Schultz and a 'reporter' from the Huffington Post?
Ed Schultz? really? Incredible -
Obama and the left are, in general, very scared of anyone who might question them or put them on the spot.
Related observation I made yesterday --
One of our new US senators (Mark Udall (D)) is comfortable as a guest on AM radio shows like Air America. He Never agrees to go on any of the more conservative local talk shows. Anyway, Udall agreed yesterday a quick interview on the Caplis and Silverman show. (mix of conservative/liberal). The first thing Mark said is "Craig - are you there?". Craig is the "liberal" of the two.
Mark would never agree to go on the show otherwise.

Kitchen sinks will be included in the energy efficient refurbishment of government offices that BHO was calling for. You know that this will prove to be a massive pot of waste and fraud with favored special interest contractors swallowing billions to slap insulation and badly installed solar panels onto every tower, garage and out house in the federal inventory.

Great news, yes the market works. Costs go down, there is stickiness but it should be less with modern technology, so people can save money. That gives the banks more capital that they have to lend. That drives the interest rates down. That allows people to borrow and spend. Repeat cycle, without trillion dollar government spending binge.

Graders are complex equipment. Training and experience are needed, and there are plenty of people in that industry short on work. An old white guy with no recent construction experience need not apply.
Shovels are rarer and rarer on these big projects, and I invite you to see who's behind them next job you pass. YMMV from mine in Texas. Again, as a person who has done some hiring, I have turned away the inexperienced AND the over-qualified.
And with that, I am off to chaffeur. Sorry for the drive-by provocation.

Don't worry, Porkulus II and Porkulus III later this summer ("The Stimulus package we passed is not working, we must act now or this will be a catastrophe!") will have some spending before then.
Then again maybe not. He thinks we are too stupid to realize that if the "stimulus" hasn't started spending money it _can't_ affect anything, so the door is wide open to get more spending in.

I'm at a loss for why he didn't say that an investment of 4 billion would save 2 billion per year. Here is my example - we are in the process of erecting wind turbines at my jobsite. There is a pretty steep up front cost but the engineers determined that with theirinstallation, the complex will essentially be electrically self sufficient. It will still take upwards of 5 to 10 years ot recoup the up front cost but come year 11 or so, we're making money. Why couldn't Obama use an example like this to illustrate what is probably a decent program in his otherwise horrible bill?

Some observations about the "press corps" questions:
The toughest question came from AP, but it still allowed Obama to set up his strawman for knocking down. He finally asked Fox News!, which must have been such a surprise the reporter could only manage a softball question. All the other questions weren't even softball, they were T-ball.
There were a couple of odd-ball questions: the HuffPo "reporter: asked about Obama's plans for investigating & prosecuting Bush admin officials. I was glad to hear Obama turn that around and say he was not interested in looking backwards. Even Obama realizes the stupidity of such a path.
The other odd-ball question came from Helen Thomas who asked if the president was aware of any Middle Eastern country that had nuclear weapons. Obama ignored the obvious point of Thomas' question, which was to have Obama identify Israel, and instead Obama focused on the situation in Pakistan & Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Thomas even attempted to repeat her question, "But about any other country with nuclear weapons..." but Obama talked right over her. He was gracious to the old hag, but he wasn't about to fall into her trap and cause a diplomatic tempest.

re: #694 Lincolntf
Good morning - you know it's funny you mentioned that. I've posted this on LGF a couple of times and think it merits another shot (y'all can check out Walter I. Newton's #529 on the prior thread for details):
"Hey y'all - I just received this e-mail from someone who is trustworthy and who has run it through SNOPES.
I hope Charles will forgive my OT with this but THIS IS IMPORTANT:
Hidden away in the bowels of the so-called "stimulus plan" are provisions which lay the foundation for a Universal Healthcare system -- and part of this system will be a new government bureaucracy whose function it will be to review every treatment decision made by every physician, including your doctor and the doctor of your loved ones, and then to determine whether or not you or yours should receive treatment based on a formula that places a dollar value on your life
or the life of your loved ones.
Unfortunately, this is not an exaggeration, or product of a conspiracy nut -- below is a link to an article at Bloomberg, written by Betsy McCaughey, whose resume includes being a former lieutenant governor of New York. We can be grateful to
her for ferreting this out.
So tell me, what is your life worth? Your child's -- your grandchild's -- your Mother's, your Father's, your friend's?
That this should be hidden away in a bill that is supposed to be an economic stimulus bill -- that the groundwork for such a radical revision of our medical sector should be established without any national debate -- it's breathtaking --
these are the radicals we are dealing with -- this is the result of many not doing their homework before voting.
Is this the change you can believe in?
Here are the facts as provided by Betsy McCaughey:
[Link: [Link: [Link: www.bloomberg.com...]...]...]
And here is a site where you can get the names, e-mail addy's etc of your congresscritters:
[Link: walkingwithpeter.wordpress.com...]
I know I'm asking you for a lot - some of your precious time, but do honestly hope you'll e-mail or write to your congresscritters, EVEN IF THEY ARE DEMS."
And I still mean it and it does still concern me!

The reason he didn't say it that way, is that he doesn't want to be on record saying something that will be easily proven untrue in the long run. At least thats my guess. The $4 billion will be spent, that's for sure. Will windows go into all the buildings that that money should pay for? Nope. Maybe half the buildings will get the (probably marginal) benefits, and probably double the 4 billion will actually be spent. That's just my view from living in MA, and watching countless public works projects choke cities to death with corruption and incompetence. I imagine Chicago was much the same way when Obama was there. The fact that this particular project is also going to involve "green" folks just ratchets up the likelihood that a lot of that cash is going to be frittered away.
Pardon my cynicism so early in the morning.

New Penalties
Hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new system will face penalties. “Meaningful user” isn’t defined in the bill. That will be left to the HHS secretary, who will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time” (511, 518, 540-541)
What penalties will deter your doctor from going beyond the electronically delivered protocols when your condition is atypical or you need an experimental treatment? The vagueness is intentional. In his book, Daschle proposed an appointed body with vast powers to make the “tough” decisions elected politicians won’t make.
The stimulus bill does that, and calls it the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (190-192). The goal, Daschle’s book explained, is to slow the development and use of new medications and technologies because they are driving up costs. He praises Europeans for being more willing to accept “hopeless diagnoses” and “forgo experimental treatments,” and he chastises Americans for expecting too much from the health-care system.
Elderly Hardest Hit
Daschle says health-care reform “will not be pain free.” Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.
SNIP
Let's start with you, tom.

Do you have any hobbies? I ask that from the standpoint that contacts you've made with your hobbies might be able to help you get employed again. You've got to talk to friends, family, acquaintances, etc about job leads. Sitting at home won't do you any good. Wake up in the morning, get ready as though you were going to work.

RECALL THEM ALL!
Congress has a richly deserved reputation, all 11% points of approval rating of it.
Let's look at the bank bailout fiasco. $700 billion spent on banks that never made that much in their entire collective history (yes their growth in equity did exceed this amount) so the only way the USG ever gets paid back is if the banks are once more successful, but for that to happen, things have to turn around. The "Stimulus" Bill is a giant clog in the arteries of this nation. And you do know what happens when arteries clog up, the patient goes into fatal arrest. But there will be no paddles, our government has already issued $10 trillion in debt financing even before we pass this, the last donut before the seizure. Schools for districts that don't need them, and more money for "education" that we ever spent before- here it is helpful to point out that US test scores flatlined and declined from the moment the US Department of Education was created. It is is the problem, no amount of money can fix it. But no tax cuts for small business, no we can never do that.
We elected this Congress and we have a right to unelect them. We must categorically recall the entire Congress. We have every reason to do so. They dance about pretending the Senate and House Banking Committees were innocent old ladies who lost their savings to Simon LeGree when, in fact, Frank, Dodd and the rest were deeply immersed in the whole mess and bear as much culpability as anyone for the mess we now find ourselves in.
Then there is this zombified abortion of bill that is larger than the whole US budget circa 1980, talk about the 80-20% rule, this is a budget busting flaming turd of a bill and everyone and anyone who votes for it should be out of a job tomorrow.
Guess what people, the folks running our government answer to us and we have the right, and this instant case, a duty to recall the entire Congress and replace it with new faces. Its broken. They broke it. We have learned in the last few weeks that the ruling class of this country does not think it has to pay taxes, that they entitled to be chauffeured around the Capital city and that we are ungrateful peasants and serfs for daring to question their integrity and evil rebels for suggesting they be reformed.
This is no reform Congress. Henry Waxman believes he has a right to effectuate the largest wealth transfer in history from America to the rest of the world in the name of a Global Warming phenomenon that at is inversely proportional to my February heating bill. Yes! Let's solve a problem that doesn't need fixing.
Let's take our country back. Let's tart today. Let's demand leaders who are accountable not just electable. Let's send a message to Washington today: all of you resign. Out. Leave office. You are the problem. You failed us. You failed the nation and posterity. Leave or we will bounce you from office and replace you with people who will represent us.
Let's take the 535 most worthless individuals in America and put them on the unemployment line with the millions of other Americans victimized by their that the profligacy. Recall them all. Recall them all NOW!
It starts with getting petition signatures. We the undersigned demand a special recall vote be held on July 4th 2009 and that the question of ___ (fill in the name of your Lord and Master here) remaining in Congress/Senate be put to a vote of the people.
It's our country too and our nation needs an immediate radical rascalectomy.

That's the upshot of a multi-site study called the Warwick Microwind Trial project, a year-long survey on the performance of roof-mounted turbines done in the U.K. done by Encraft, a low-carbon technology consulting firm.
SNIP
But the Encraft study, which came out last month, found that many of the turbines didn't meet manufacturers claims for power generation. Some turbines needed to go offline at times because of technical problems or complaints over noise.

Nah. I was just fishing around for a viable justification for my forgetting what day it was. I have been totally out of the loop for five days (check my comment history -- nada, didn't even have internet access). Where I was felt like jail, at least.
Don't take this wrong, but I was hoping for a report from a protest where the cops actually did something. Billy clubs, mass arrests, whinny moonbats calling their mothers from jail ect. Of course you being on the left coast, the likelihood of that is close to zero...
That being said, I am glad you didn't go to jail...

No thanks. I grew up in Chicago so I know it pretty well. South side has no love in my heart. I am a Northside girl.
now that all the snow is melted on the northside (the mayor's snow removal plan is called spring) watch were you step lots of little gems around.
