Amnesty International Criticizes Hamas for Murdering and Maiming Opponents

Amnesty International must have felt the heat of public opinion after their ludicrous statement that they ignore Hamas war crimes because they’re so obvious; today they issued a report that, oddly enough, accuses Hamas of eliminating opponents.

Is it a genuine change of direction, or an attempt to preempt criticism? Amnesty International has consistently been one of the most radical anti-Israel NGOs, so it’s a little too early to call out the flying pig. But there does seem to be a trend lately among these groups to notice reality.

GENEVA (AFP) – Amnesty International on Tuesday accused Hamas of waging a campaign to kill or maim scores of Palestinian opponents in the Gaza Strip since the end of December.

The human rights group said in a report that at least two dozen men have been shot dead by gunmen from the Palestinian militia that governs the Gaza Strip since December 27. “Scores of others have been shot in the legs, knee-capped or inflicted with other injuries intended to cause severe disability, subjected to severe beatings … or otherwise tortured or ill-treated,” it added.

“Hamas forces and militias in the Gaza Strip have engaged in a campaign of abductions, deliberate and unlawful killings, torture and death threats against those they accuse of ‘collaborating’ with Israel, as well as opponents and critics,” the report said.

I'm not exactly holding my breath on that first option.

I think its more of a CYA move so they can get back to hitting Israel. In the future, they can point to this report showing how "fair" they are.

I'm skeptical. Hard to change spots. This could be a bone tossed to realists to distract them.

Amnesty International has consistently been one of the most radical anti-Israel NGOs,

Over the last 30 years, the very term "NGO" has come to mean "anti-Israel organization staffed by left-wingers who are unemployable anywhere else but in a useless nonprofit."

Hamas overplayed its hand. Provoking the Israeli invasion, hiding among civilians, in schools and Hospitals. Stealing humanitarian aid and torturing and killing Palestinians after the withdrawal. They've pretty much guaranteed a victory for Israeli hawks and thier continued rocket fire will almost certainly lead to another Israeli incursion.

It's possible that many of the "mainstream" lefty orgs may finally be realizing that spewing one-sided, anti-Israel views has actually caused more harm to their precious Pals (pun intended), because it has given the Hamas thugs a free hand to murder their opposition and destroy free speech. Maybe.

Having a left wing President may also explain it; now that all the ills of the world can't be blamed on a right-wing American president, they feel like they can actually report some facts, knowing that it won't harm their election hopes and dreams.

I'm just thinking out loud here...it may just be a flying pig moment after all!

Do they care? They still have 'world opinion' on their side. I have little faith in Kadima over the long term. The main reason for the incursion into Gaza was the looming Israeli election. By acting in response to Palestinian rocket attacks they were able to split the vote between Kadima and Likud.

I've been following the live-blog on israellyCool.

It's still just exit polls so far. No actual results. So hold on to your hat.

And even so, Kadima still has only a minority of actual seats, so they'll have to form a coalition or "unity" government in concert with Likud and/or other right-wing parties. So, basically, it'll probably be a muddled, centrist government, whoever is actually Prime Minister.

It's news to them that HAMAS does anything bad. All of the touchy-feely, COEXIST, Imagine World Peace, War Never Solves Anything crowd over there at AI Headquarters is probably still clinging on to the believe that HAMAS is just another NGO, you know, building schools and daycare centers, just like Osama bin Laden did...

Even if they actually acknowledge that HAMAS is engaged in this type of activity, they will still point to Israel and the USA as the main problem in the middle east...not HAMAS.

OK Lizards, I must call it a day. I strongly encourage everyone to keep your chin up. We have made it through tough times before and will do so again. As long as we have places like lgf to come and express our opinions and learn from each other we will be just fine. Spread the word to all the people in your lives. Some will listen, some will not; one thing is certain , though. If you don't speak, then none will hear. Speak loudly. Live proudly.

Myself and other Zionists forced ourselves (recently) to attend an "Occupaton 101" lecture that was little more than a display of ignorance, and outright lies about Israel. One of our members played into the BS and asked "It's worse in Gaza than you said, Hamas has shot and murdered members of Fatah and those they suspected of aiding Israel. What can be done to stop this kind of Palestinian on Palestinian violence?"

The speakers response: "Israel has to stop occupying Palestine."

GENEVA (AFP) – Amnesty International on Tuesday accused Hamas of waging a campaign to kill or maim scores of Palestinian opponents in the Gaza Strip since the end of December make A.I. look like schmucks in the midst of a dismal fundraising environment.

AP actually has a pretty good summary of the Israeli election results:

Exit polls forecast that Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's Kadima Party would eke out a surprising victory in Israel's election Tuesday, but a strong showing by hard-line rivals will make it difficult for her to form a coalition government.

The exit polls announced on Israeli TV stations gave the centrist Kadima a narrow edge over Benjamin Netanyahu's hard-line Likud Party. The results, if confirmed, marked a stunning turn of events for Netanyahu, who had held a solid lead in opinion polls until just before the parliamentary election.

Cheers erupted at Kadima's election night headquarters as the exit polls were announced. In contrast, the mood at Likud's headquarters in Tel Aviv was dour.

If the exit poll predictions hold up — and they sometimes do not in a close election — it's not clear if Livni will be able to form Israel's next government and become prime minister. The projections said hard-line parties won 66 seats in the 120-member parliament, while liberal parties captured just 54 seats.

Such a result would mean that Livni would have to reach out to the hard-liners to bring them into a government, or even result in Likud leading the next government.

there does seem to be a trend lately among these groups to notice reality.

Things are tough all over.

And that means such groups can't rely solely on the rabid, drooling Left for funding anymore, especially now that the Left has shot it's wad getting their President elected. Coupled with a general decline in contributions thanks to the tanking economy, AI and other such groups are suddenly faced with the necessity of raising funds from a more diverse spectrum of contributors, which means keeping the spittle-spewing toned down.

They embarrass her in front of her Hollywood friends.

But wiki has this to say about her "politics" (if you can call them that):

"In 2007, [Bar] Refaeli became a source of controversy when it became known that she had evaded military service, mandatory for Israeli citizens over 18-years-old, by marrying a family acquaintance and divorcing him soon after.[19] Refaeli stated in an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, "I really wanted to serve in the IDF, but I don't regret not enlisting, because it paid off big-time," further adding, "Why is it good to die for our country? What, isn't it better to live in New York City?"[19] Refaeli has since said the interview didn't accurately reflect her statements and threatened to file a lawsuit for libel.[20] Consequently, the Israeli Forum for the Promotion of Equal Share in the Burden threatened to boycott the fashion chain Fox if they hired Refaeli, but the two sides reached a compromise in which the model agreed to visit injured IDF soldiers on visits to Israel and encourage enlistment in the army."

Basically, she sounds like your typical airhead model, who doesn't know jack-doodle about politics, and is narcissistic.

Of course, looking like that, it'd be hard not to be narcissistic.

Well, for one thing, "Wagyu" refers to the method by which the cow is raised, which supposedly makes the meat better. Whereas "Kobe beef" has to be raised in that manner and actually come from a certain place in Japan. Most "Kobe beef" in America is actually American, from Colorado I think, so technically it can be called "Wagyu beef" but not "Kobe beef."

Of course, looking like that, it'd be hard not to be narcissistic.

re: #171 Last Mohican

Well, for one thing, "Wagyu" refers to the method by which the cow is raised, which supposedly makes the meat better. Whereas "Kobe beef" has to be raised in that manner and actually come from a certain place in Japan. Most "Kobe beef" in America is actually American, from Colorado I think, so technically it can be called "Wagyu beef" but not "Kobe beef."

Kind of like "sparkling wine" and Champagne.

Well, I'm not quite right.

Apparently "Wagyu" refers to the breed of cattle, not to the method in which it was raised. Some Wagyus are bred in Japan, according to certain standards that allow them to be called Kobe beef. Others are bred outside of Japan using Kobe-style methods, and technically they're merely "Kobe style" beef. I believe real Kobe beef is rare in America.

The MSM is spinning for Obama (as always)

1) Obama's plan to "help" the economy was passed
2) The stock market, an indicator of the economy, was harmed.

But it wasn't because those that understand the economy, understand business, and understand money also understood that what Obama was doing was bad.

No.

The media kindly tells us, in the headline no less so we don't miss it, that the problem is because the investors don't understand enough of what Obama is doing. Yep, the combined brainpower of the captains of finance are incapable of understanding the genius of The One.

Lacking Clarity, Dow Plunges 382

The Dow suffered its steepest selloff in three months on Tuesday as the markets fretted about a lack of details emerging from trillions of dollars of initiatives unveiled by Washington in an effort to halt one of the worst downturns since the Great Depression.

So reassuring to realize that the writer can read the minds of all the investors and know WHY they acted as they did. They were fretting over lack of details!

I mostly agree with you, but in his defense, I don't think anybody has a real good clue how to fix this.

Here's how to fix this, and it does not take 1.5 trillion either.

Step 1:

Drop the "mark to market' valuation model and switch to discounted cash flows. You don't value a non-liquid asset with a spot market price. That cuts the capital hole by one half to 2/3rds right there. It also puts a floor in the real estate market and stops the damage right now.

Step 2:

Create "Resolution Trust #2" to get these off the banks books.

Step 3:

Start working out the loans with the holders. As the real estate market improves, the problems will become less and less.

Step 4:

When the situation is stable, open up a public trading desk for these securities which will provide a transparent trading price going forward.

Step 5:

Arm twist the SEC to reinstall the "uptick rule" and enforce the ban on naked short selling to stop the short sellers from destroying wealth for no reason but that they can get away with it right now.

That would do a heck of a lot more than what Geithner is doing, and would also show that he understands the problem.

In two years, if another "Republican takeover" happens ala 1990's, will it be possible to kill parts of this porculus bill?

I'm not saying it will happen, I'm asking if it is possible.

I can't really read Geithner, I presume he's an empty suit, but actual evidence is scarce either way. Which perhaps says it all.

OTOH I doubt if there is anything anybody could possibly have said today, that would have been really convincing.

We're way off the maps, folks.

If the daily news involved reanimating corpses and aliens from Jupiter, it couldn't be more weird than this tossing around of fifty billion dollars like peanuts.

So, if Geithner is the Ed Wood of finance, hey why not.

Sometimes I wonder if Heinlein was right about his World as Myth concept, and if we're all not actually characters in someone else's dark satire novel.

I don't know. If we want to stop this - I hope so.

President Obama arrives in office with extraordinary expectations from his own side of the aisle, a side he is predisposed to associate himself with. Ideologues of varying degrees of socialism want sweeping changes in wealth redistribution, socialized medicine, and expansive government. Historical Democratic self-interest groups want payback through the advancement of their interests in union membership, environmental restrictions, and funding for all manner of social activism. Congressional Democrats, blocked for years from the unrestrained spending for which they are so well known, want the floodgates opened. Opened wide and immediately. From these groups we see a trillion-dollar, pork-laden spending bill, pending rules that would force unions on unwilling workers, and a major shift to government taking ownership positions in public companies. And all this must be done within a month of taking office.

Here's another opinion that back you up FWIW...

From the link referring to Geithner's speech today:

The speech didn’t address the harmful pro-cyclicality stemming from the faulty credit default swap (CDS) market, the application of mark-to-market prices to regulatory capital and bond ratings, and the downward equity bias from short-selling rules and enforcement.

Actually, if the MBS's that the CDS's were insuring had been adequately underwritten and reserved for, they might not have been such a problem. I still have a hard time understanding why AIG held absolutely NO reserves for the risk they held when they knew they didn't understand how much was actually there.

3wood,

You seem to know what you are talking about. What's your background/ profession?

I heard Bob Brinker touch on some of what suggest a few weeks ago.

I was a fiduciary investing approximately $100 million a year for 20 years. The last 5 years before I retired form that line of work last summer, one of my funds returned 28% on average each of the last 5 years.

I also have taught economics, monetary policy, stock and portfolio management, and financial accounting at public and private colleges, at the undergraduate and graduate level. I also worked in money center banking when I was in Grad school. I edited the quarterly report for clients for a certain successful brokerage firm. I hope this does not sound like bragging, but the Senior VP I dealt with said I had the best grasp of macroeconomics he's ever seen.

I've been there and done it.

re: #169 zombie

Actually, Zombie, there is an acknowledged problem in Israel regarding young people facing short professional lives who simply cannot afford to lose the two to four years normally spent in the military -- athletes, dancers, musicians... and models. It's easier to train to become a doctor or engineer after age 22 than to become an Olympic skater.

A lot of these "draft-dodgers" aren't political, or even lazy, just facing short careers.

The army has come to understand this problem and is trying to make adjustments so that the thousands of Refaelis that Israel produces can serve without wasting their gifts.

Israel may become the first country in the world with a platoon of young women who prance about in bikinis in the morning and fix tanks in the afternoon. If that happens, future Refealis won't have to arrange phony marriages.

re: #149 right_wing2

No wonder there aren't any women's olympic medals held by Iran or Saudi Arabia

I remember reading about a Kuwaiti lady runner--well, an Ethiopian lady runner whom the Kuwaitis hired to run for Kuwait, and then when she won something for them, the local religious types went nuts because she wore running clothes to run in

No, I can't remember much more about it, let alone find a link. I read about it on the blog of a Kuwaiti blogger, who got busy with Photoshop and created a series of appropriately modest running outfits. He was especially proud of the light blue chador with piles of yellow ruffles. As he pointed out, (tongue firmly in cheek) it would be hard to run quickly in, but it was definitely modest, and, he felt, artistic.
