If I had my way, MEMRI would have gotten a chunk of that pork bill.

8 MAV  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 2:00:10pm

MEMRI's Reform in the Arab and Muslim World focuses on advocates of reform, and the debate surrounding it, within the Middle East and Muslim world. The project is divided into four main categories: Social Reform, which will focus on women's rights, civil society, and educational systems. Political Reform, which includes debates on democracy and the rule of law, protection of the individual, and freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. Also, Religious Reform, which covers the debate on reform in Islam, as well as the misuse of religion. Finally, the Reform Project will cover Economic Reform, which examines issues of free market economy, globalization, and modernization.

Thanks Google

I suspect that MEMRI asked for it to be removed - they recently went to a registration model at their site, and that video was not posted at YouTube by them. Hence, a copyright violation.

This is also why I'm not posting their videos as much.

29 mean Gene  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 2:09:59pm

One thing I have always appreciated about MEMRI is that, if anyone really wanted to say they ''mistranslated'' this or that, they are welcome to do so.
BUT no one comes forward doing so.
I have only seen 2nd-hand on-line gripers against MEMRI's version, then, once challeneged, the griper goes silent.

MEMRI videos posted at Youtube are magnets for the most vapid ignorant hate-filled anti-semitic garbage you will ever see in the comments. Truly sickening what some people not only think, but go out of their way to post for public consumption.

37 Spiritualized  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 2:18:37pm

That MEMRI exists is testament to the fact the media in the West is wilfully obfuscating and/or simply not reporting Islamic extremism.

These translations should be on the evening news and it should be made clear that it is government sponsored broadcasting, seen my tens of millions.

re: #39 Ben Hur

New World Order.

Now here's a pickle.

The Brits have banned Geert, I would imagine for "hate speech" against Muslims.

Yet Britain is filled to the shores with Muslims shouting Jew-hatred from every mosque and corner, and has entire neighborhoods where the police fear to tread.

Yet Europe is falling prey to neo-Nazis who shout both Muslim and Jew-hatred. And they are trying to suck in Geert, it seems.

So, if Geert falls for their advances, and shouts Jew-hatred, will the Brits reconsider and let him in?

From the wiki:

MEMRI's U.S. income statement of June 2004 stated that its total U.S. revenue was US$2,571,899, its total U.S. functional expenses were $2,254,990, and that it possessed net assets of $700,784. Charity Navigator, an organization[14] that evaluates the financial health of America's largest charities, has given MEMRI a four-star (exceptional) rating, meaning that it "... exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause" when rated on its financial health

Not only is this a worthy cause in and of itself, you know that the money you donate is used exclusively for its intended purpose and is not lost along the way in financial mismanagement.

I automatically dislike people who use words in speeches that they'd never use in conversation. The POTUS is not a "folks" kind of guy.

You people? Sure.
Those people? All the time.
Others? Okay
Americans? Sure
Folks? Never.

Then you probably disliked Hillary's fake southern accent.

111 formercorpsman  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 2:45:44pm

You know, I have pretty much worked my ass off today, and now have time to sit down before my hour long drive home.

I finally watched the Florida revival video.

We are still footing the bill for this son of bitch to be in campaign mode.

One of the most precious things my parents did when I was younger, was let me know there is no free ride. Nike's just came out, and I wanted a pair that cost $24.00 dollars at the 2 Guys dept store.

My mother would only spend $12.00 on sneakers. She made me make up the other $12.00.

Watching that little bastard hold his arms up, ask what his Saviour could do about his working in McDonald's for 4 years, and not getting enough in return, good lord that drives me insane.

You little bastard, first, assume all of the risk, pay the amount of your employer's tax contributions over what they are already paying, share the cost of the overhead, pay the property taxes.

That little prick.

That's money you don't have that's used to buy stock from someone that doesn't own it and then sell it back to them at a profit or loss that someone else gets to put on their books until you pay them or don't, depending. I think.

Speaking of Vlaams Belang: Pat Buchanan praises the rise of ethnic nationalism around the world and hints at race wars in America....
Ethnonationalism still a strong presence in today’s world

By Pat Buchanan

In Europe, populist anti-immigrant parties, alarmed at a loss of national identities, are striding toward respectability and power. The Vlaams Belang, seeking independence for Flanders, is the biggest party in the Belgian parliament. The Peoples Party and Freedom Party are now Austria’s second and third most popular. The Swiss People’s Party of Christoph Blocher is the largest in Bern. In France, the National Front humiliated the government this week, winning over half the vote in a suburb of Marseilles.

All are unabashedly ethnonationalist. Writes British diplomat Sir Christopher Meyer, "It is useless to say that nationalism and ethnic tribalism have no place in the international relations of the 21st century."
....
Inside Ehud Olmert’s cabinet, a rising star is Avigdor Lieberman. What Lieberman’s "merry men" advocate, writes the American Prospect, is "ethnic cleansing: As the creepy name (which translates into ‘Our Home Is Israel’) suggests, Yisrael Beiteinu believes the million-plus Arab citizens of Israel must be expelled."

Obama won the African-American vote 97 percent to 3 percent over John McCain, and 90 percent to 10 percent over Hillary Clinton in the later primaries. McCain ran stronger than George W. Bush only in Appalachia, the laager of the Scots-Irish.

In Jerry Z. Muller’s "Us and Them: The Enduring Power of Ethnic Nationalism," in Foreign Affairs, his thesis is summarized:

"Americans generally belittle the role of ethnic nationalism in politics. But ... it corresponds to some enduring propensities of the human spirit. It is galvanized by modernization, and ... it will drive global politics for generations to come. Once ethnic nationalism has captured the imagination of groups in a multiethnic society, ethnic disaggregation or partition is often the least bad answer." Disaggregation or partition, the man said.

Are we really in a post-racial America, or is our multicultural multiethnic America, too, destined for Balkanization and break-up?

UK slides further into Dhimmitude: Geert Wilders banned from entering UK

Dutch MP Geert Wilders' movie Fitna has not only been banned by the UK parliament but the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party himself will not be welcome in the UK. This ruling by Home Affairs secretary David Milliband has deeply angered the Dutch.

Dutch foreign minister Maxime Verhagen has lodged formal objections with the British embassy in The Hague and with his British counterpart over the unprecedented barring of an EU-parliamentarian by another EU country.
Verhagen told his UK colleague on Tuesday that the Dutch cabinet was 'very unhappy' about their shock decision to ban a parliamentarian from another EU- country, his ministerial spokesman said. Verhagen has lodged formal objections with Milliband and the UK ambassador in The Hague.

This move is unprecedented in European politics - to ban a citizen from another EU country who has no criminal record, and who moreover is a leader of a growing Dutch political party, has never happened before.

Indeed.

I don't believe that. Are they turning race car driving into a sexist, male googling sport by having these car driven by skinny little woman?

A shame.

Also notice he mentions Israel in his list of ethnic nationalist movements. This confirms my theory that many of Israel's supporters are supporting it because they view it as an apartheid state based and a racialist society. It's very worrisome to see Israel's supporters and its opponents agree on this issue. In the long run this will do a lot of damage to Israel's standing in the world.

Yes, he is. For the same reasons that Vlaams Belang are supporters of Israel. They view Israel as an ethnic nationalist movement. The BNP is slowly leaning towards supporting Israel for the same reasons. They don't see Israel as a free democratic society, they see it as an ethnic nationalist movement just like Flemish nationalism, Serbian nationalism, White Power (here in the States), etc.
It's a very disturbing trend.

I don't drive as fast as I used to. Especially now that I drive a nerd wagon.
(also called loser recession my money goes to the government geek-mobile) I am a lead foot when conditions are clear. I'd be dangerous with a fast car.

I hear ya, but snow is really not a problem with me. I keep a safe distance and watch out for those that don't have a clue.

All you have to do is pay attention to the weather warnings and radar and watch the sky. In the tornado we had here in OKC on May 3, 1999, most people just got in their cars and unassed the area.

344 Killgore Trout  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 3:44:18pm

re: #342 Occasional Reader

Well, there's some nuance here: He also supports the Palestinians to form their own ethnic nationalist state. Try to think along racialist lines and you'll see where Buchanan is coming from. From his article that I linked to upthread he sees the mixing of races as a bad idea that inevitably leads to race wars and Balkinization.

re: #40 MandyManners

Huh?

He has been informed that "your presence in the UK would pose a genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat to one of the fundamental interests of society."

"Statements about Muslims and their beliefs ... would threaten community harmony and therefore public security in the UK."

Translation: you will make our Islamic overlords mad, so we will not let you in.

If you want to read the letter he got via the British embassy, go to Your text to link... and click on the pdf file under the picture of Wilders. (I don't know how to link a pdf file, if that is possible at all, sorry).

Klein verzet has the story.

I bet it made a nice dent in the budgetary problems.

Donation made. Well worth it.

350 neoconundrum  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 4:46:38pm

I still have a copy of the original "Note for the Record" that established MEMRI. My ex-wife was a signatory and I was a witness on 28 November, 1997. An insignificant "historical" document maybe, but there is no doubt that the creation of MEMRI was stroke of genius.

No one knew what the Arab press was saying. Now we do.

Predictably, nothing MEMRI translates ever finds its way into the MSM except for Fox News. The 1-2 punch of MEMRI and FOX is, basically, sole source of information that no one else is providing. As you know, it is an eye-opening experience.

This is one donation I didn't even have to think about.

351 notutopia  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 5:43:25pm

Donated. MEMRI has been a worthy news source, when all the MSM has failed. May they continue their high standards and quality features.

352 ruswmrun  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 5:51:39pm

354 MrSoCal  Wed, Feb 11, 2009 8:04:28am

What a great cause. I have never donated to them before but have added my name to their list to remind me to donate again in the future. Thanks LGF!
