Iowahawk: Largest Number Discovered

Iowahawk has exclusive details on an incredible scientific discovery.

PALO ALTO, CA - An international mathematics research team announced today that they had discovered a new integer that surpasses any previously known value “by a totally mindblowing sh-tload.” Project director Yujin Xiao of Stanford University said the theoretical number, dubbed a “stimulus,” could lead to breakthroughs in fields as diverse as astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and Chicago asphalt contracting.

“Unlike previous large numbers like the Googleplex or the Bazillionty, the Stimulus has no static numerical definition,” said Xiao. “It keeps growing and growing, compounding factorially, eating up all zeros in its path. It moves freely across Cartesian dimensions and has the power to make any other number irrational.”

Jean-Luc Brossard, a researcher with the European consortium CERN, said the number is so staggeringly large that it is difficult for even mathematicians to grasp, let alone lay people.

I thought they were going to call that a stimullion.

In response to this discovery, the Obama administration has announced this will create a stimulus number of jobs, specifically environmentally friendly "green" jobs targeting the shrinking sectors of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and Chicago asphalt contracting.

"The best way to understand a stimulus is to imagine a dollar sign followed by a packed string of hexidecimal nanodigits, wound into a triple helix, woven into a dodecahedron, and stacked on top of one another.

That's beautiful.

This obviously calls for a Congressionally mandated special investigation. The cost of which should be added to the Stimulus.

Palin: Alaska will accept sensible stimulus funds

Gov. Sarah Palin says Alaska will accept federal stimulus funds, if they make sense for the state.

It's not known how much might be available for Alaska, but Palin said at a news conference Wednesday it could be about $1 billion.

She says if the projects make sense for Alaska, those federal dollars would be welcome.

Palin says those that make the most sense are construction projects.

She's worried, however, about funding for other things like social programs, which could wind up costing the state money in the long run once federal dollars run out.

It's tough to pass up free money but that's what hopenchange is all about; Everybody gets free stuff.

Swede’s Koran sticker shuts down popular Indian ski resort

A Swedish man on a ski holiday in India caused hundreds of angry demonstrators to take to the streets demanding he be punished for putting a sticker with a verse from the Koran on his skis.

The Swede, who lives in Qatar, was nearly beaten by a mob of irate protesters on Saturday in the ski resort village of Gulmarg, located in Kashmir in northern India, India’s Telegraph newspaper reports.

Rumours that the Swede was also Jewish didn’t help the situation, causing many angered residents to assume the act was a deliberate provocation.

Police intervened, however, and took the man to the local police station for questioning.

The Swedish man explained that that the sticker had been given to him for good luck by his wife, who is Muslim.

“She had given him the sticker to protect him from harm since he had come here for skiing. He inadvertently put the sticker on his ski equipment, not knowing the local sensitivities,” said Kashmir police chief B. Srinivas to the Telegraph.

So far, the current recession hasn't surpassed that of the late 70s and early 1980s, when Ronald Reagan took office, in severity. Reagan's tax cuts and fiscal policies turned the economy around for an unprecedented twenty years of growth and prosperity.

So far, Obama is the anti-Reagan. His announced policies seek to undo everything the Reagan Administration accomplished. He will fail. The question is whether the American people will hold him accountable for it, or whether the Democrats will successfully blame every one of their blunders on Bush, as they did with Hoover.

How does one "believe" in science?

A theory is correct if it matches observable phenomena and survives the tests that can be used against it.

If it doesn't it goes away, replaced by a theory that can pull that off... until a better one comes along.

"Belief" doesn't have anything to do with it. Science has to do with accuracy, explanation, and understanding.

More Americans Believe in the Devil, Hell and Angels than in Darwin’s Theory of Evolution

* 80% of adult Americans believe in God – unchanged since the last time we asked the question in 2005. Large majorities of the public believe in miracles (75%), heaven (73%), angels (71%), that Jesus is God or the Son of God (71%), the resurrection of Jesus (70%), the survival of the soul after death (68%), hell (62%), the Virgin birth (Jesus born of Mary (61%) and the devil (59%).
* Slightly more people – but both are minorities – believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution (47%) than in creationism (40%).
* Sizeable minorities believe in ghosts (44%), UFOs (36%), witches (31%), astrology (31%), and reincarnation (24%).

Differences between Catholics and Protestants

There are no significant differences between the large percentages of Catholics and Protestants who believe in God, miracles, heaven and hell, that Jesus is the Son of God, angels, the resurrection of Jesus, the survival of the soul after death, the Virgin birth and the devil.

However, Catholics are more likely than Protestants to believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution (by 52% to 32%), ghosts (by 57% to 41%), UFOs (by 43% to 31%), and astrology (by 40% to 28%). Protestants are slightly more likely than Catholics to believe in creationism (by 54% to 46%).

Funny how polls, which are properly discounted in politics as being frequently the product of biased or slanted questions, are taken as gospel in this area.

People have a natural tendency to accept the polls that support their own beliefs or preconceived ideas. And people often do not realize that questions within such surveys are slanted.

Careful everybody! You wouldn't want to help private businesses recover now? 0bama wouldn't approve!

Dem. Mayor Wants Apology From Obama

The mayor of Las Vegas wants an apology from President Obama. Monday the president said companies receiving federal bailout money shouldn't visit Sin City.

“You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime."

Fellow Democrat Oscar Goodman responds, "That's outrageous... He owes us a retraction. What's a better place, as I say, than for them to come here? And to change their mind and to go someplace else and to cancel and at the suggestion of the president of the United States — that's outrageous."

Dem. Mayor Wants Apology From Obama

More on this story here.

Alinksy Rule 9
"The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself." Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists' minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)

The threat of economic catastrophe needed for Obama to get the Marxist Stimulation Package. When in fact historically the economy is cyclic, and if we do nothing it will turn back up.

356 Taqiyyotomist  Wed, Feb 11, 2009 6:42:01pm

Whole lotta "Christian" churches these days, which have departed from the Gospel of Christ.
Black Liberation Theology. The ID'ers. The Catholic seminary gay swinging clubs. Phelps and his bunch of crackpots. Huckster "miracle-workers" like Hinn and the thousands of churches which follow them, nigh unto worshipping them. Too many to list. They are the devil's proudest handiwork, for they lead nonbelievers into believing falsities about Christ, and about His work.

There are also churches which have not departed from the Gospel. I haven't been to one in a long time; I was in a different part of the country, and I've been to depressed and lazy to look for another. It was a Bible Chapel, nondenominational, small, based on the Word and the personal, not the political and the current and latest theological faddery, not the latest bestseller. Many intellectuals there. And farmers. Usually they were both at once.

I won't quote Him here, don't want to "shove anything down" anyone's "throat", but Christ did have a bit to say about the End, and about people who would preach a different Gospel than the one which was witnessed by the apostles. I think the concept of "woe" was something He mentioned.

On the subject of mathematics...

One of my best friends is a rabbi. He asked me to do a calculation for him. He said it was pretty compelling evidence of Divine agency. I was impressed by such a challenge.

He said,

If you look at Sderot, Ashkelon and Beersheva, you will find that over 100 rockets fell within city limits. Buildings cover about 40% of the land area. Yet only 2% of the buildings were hit. He said that the rockets also fell all over the place around the city and that he was only counting the ones that landed in city limits.

He asked me what the odds of that were. He said this is Divine agency.

I said ok. I did the calculation. If we assume that a rocket has a .4 chance of "winning" and a .6 chance of loosing and there were 100 trials with only two hitting.

There are {100 2} read as 100 choose 2 possible combinations of 100 rockets fired and two hitting.

That means the probability of this happening is:

{100 2} * (.4)^2 * (.6)^98

which is about 2 X 10^-19.

This assumes a random distribution of the fall of the rockets.
If my friend's numbers are correct, I am impressed.

One hell of a great show.

WCRB, the classical station in Boston, used to have WCRB Saturday Night, back before NBC had SNL. Mr. Richard Kay hosted, and at one time, he claimed to have been the first person to air Monty Python in the US.
He also had bumper stickers (like "Reunite Godwanaland", "Handel With Care") and a door hanging that said "Bach in a Fugue Minuets".

Years later, I was on a model railroading email list, and needed some parts that he had; he sent them. I didn't realize who he was until I saw the package.

I got 1.4373 X 10^-19.

But there's a problem with your logic. In actuality, you really need to calculate the odds for building A being hit, vs. building B, vs. building C, etc. for each building in the cities. Because the probability that any one building will be hit depends on its footprint.

In a few hours, we'll be noting the exact one-year anniversary of my my most-popular ever YouTube video:

Liberal hot-head argues with Marines supporters in Berkeley

With 47,098 hard-earned views and counting.

Even more interestingly, 2,134 comments. The comments thread just grows and grows. Still, after a year, with no known linkage to the video, it gets about ten comments per day. And more growing daily.

I get emails all the time from people saying it is their favorite video on the Internet.

Not sure why. Maybe because it just shows the raw, unedited difference between moonbats and Marines.

And the older guy at the end who delivers the eternal classic line ("You're all punks -- and I'd die right here for every one of you!") -- amazing how many commenters and emailers say "He is my all-time hero!"

As far as I know, none of the people depicted even know they're in this video. Imagine -- the guy is a hero to thousands, and is totally unaware of it!

re: #354 jcm

When you combine Rule 10 with the "Moby Directive" is when things begin to get scary.

RULE 10: "If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive." Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog.

Moby said to plant bigoted messages on rightwing websites and forums, while using the guise of a Real Right Winger. And many of his loyal moonbats do, quite frequently. When a Moby decides to do these things in Real Life, like the former-Paulian (same people, folks) "turned" Republican, who carved a B in her face and blamed it on a nonexistant Black man (she did it with RULE 10 in mind, I f*ing guarantee you), things get scary. I will not be shocked, surprised, or even plussed(?) if sometime in the next couple of months we get another Whitebread Terrorist, another Angry White Male, or another Nichols, because I feel like I've read the script already. "The Public sympathises with the underdog." Just wait.

re: #369 LudwigVanQuixote

I'm sorry..The logic is completely wrong..the odds and predictions are completely flawed..
This is not an event given to predictions, math, oddsmaking or frankly any math is in play.
This tragic event has already happened..We know exactly how many rockets fell..and where and on what..How many people died, how many children paid the price for hate..
The numbers already exist...And I promise you..if they show 70% of all rockets fell into an empty field..they are accurate..Don't worry about the formula..So many houses were destroyed, fields were hit and innocent civilians were killed...It is history..not math

Then there's this miracle. Notice B Hussein gets all the credit while he didn't actually do a thing.

While local and national media swarmed Henrietta Hughes for interviews, Chene Thompson, wife of State Rep. Nick Thompson, grabbed Hughes' hand and offered them a house.

The house is in LaBelle, the first home Chene Thompson bought after law school. "Just give me the opportunity to help you," Chene Thompson told her.

But as of Tuesday night, the Hughes had not contacted the Thompsons about coming to see the house.

This woman cried about being homeless and begged for help on national TV, yet didn't have time to go see the house. Make sense?

Actually, I chose it in the 1980s! Seriously. The very first time I ever "dialed in" to a BBS with my first 14.4 modem and had to choose a username, I just chose "zombie" off the top of my head for no particular reason. What can I say -- I was young! From that day forward, every time I had to choose a user name on BBSes and on the early internet, I always stuck with "zombie." Just because -- well, that was my name.

LGF was the first blog I ever registered at, and naturally -- I chose the same name. There's no real "reason" for it. I have no special connection nor liking for zombies. It was just a word that popped into my head one day 20 years ago.

re: #392 vxbush

I got 1.4373 X 10^-19.

But there's a problem with your logic. In actuality, you really need to calculate the odds for building A being hit, vs. building B, vs. building C, etc. for each building in the cities. Because the probability that any one building will be hit depends on its footprint.

The greater probability is that the rabbi has some facts wrong. I don't know about Sderot, but in the U.S., many cities have "city limits" that extend well out into the countryside. While the built-up area may be fairly densely built up, the percentage of land within the "city limits" that is built up may be small.

Another possible confounding factor might be that the target city is hard to hit. What if most of the rockets are falling short? What if the guys shooting the rockets are aiming at a point outside the city, because they've miscalculated or because their maps are wrong or because their real target is an army post outside town?

The use of math here lends false precision to the argument. It's garbage in, garbage out.

re: #443 zombie

I have that exact same problem -- to not respond when someone calls out "zombie!" at a protest.

(And yes, it happens, as you can see in this video):

Anti-Israel protester: "Thank you for videotaping us. And I want to call out zombie too, who pictures us, and tries to post our pictures on the Internet, and show that we're terrorists. But in fact, she is a terrorist. Why doesn't she show her face? We show our face. How come she doesn't show her face? [Inaudible section]...try to pull us down. Thank you. As long as you're videotaping us, we'll be here. Hell no, we won't go."

Wow... the comments there are the usual YouTube BS... I did get a kick out of the one calling Zombie a bully.

Yeah, po lil' pali-terrorist, can't stand to have yo picture taken, coward.

480 Cato the Elder  Wed, Feb 11, 2009 7:28:38pm

In case anyone still trusts the mask Robert Spencer wears, consider this:

He has today joined two new Facebook groups.

The first, "CAMPAIGN FOR THE 'RECONQUISTA' IN ANATOLIA!" (note the knuckle-dragger "shouting" in all caps), has as its opening paragraph the following:

The official facebook [sic] group for the Reconquest of the Anatolian Penninsular [sic]; a European region in Asia [sic] which is currently being occupied by the illegal Turkish state and [sic] for the humane and peaceable, yet compulsory systematic and wholesale physical repatriation of all Turkish, Arab and Muslim populations living within this area.

The group currently has 315 members, with Spencer being one of the newest.

One of the three videos posted on the group's page is "The Aryan Nations." I will not link to it here. Those of you on Facebook can go to the page linked above and see for yourselves. According to the stentorian founder, "ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED."

The second new group for Spencer is "Citizens' Declaration of Threat & Plea for Relief", a more innocuous-looking, but still ominous and blatantly anti-Muslim (not just anti-Islamo-Fascist) page that demands, to pick just two items:

4. That foreign aid to Islamic nations cease and aid to nations influenced by Islam be severely curtailed, except to resist jihad.

Presumably this would include Israel, since with its 10% to 15% Arab-Muslim citizens, it can be said to be "influenced by Islam".

7. That immigration reforms immediately be implemented to include a suspension of immigration by Muslims for not less than 20 years, exclusive of apostates seeking asylum.

Of the two pages, the first is by far the worst.

I am writing to Spencer for an explanation. Given that he has willingly joined a group that features Nazi propaganda, I'm not expecting it to be positive.

Charles, I'm kind of new to all of this. Love much of what goes on and particularly views on science v fiction, and other areas. How about how I can start a discussion on where we as a people should be heading. Road infrastructure, bridges, whatever happened to the next generation of intra continental travel...IE building down to the max of 20k to connect NY,LA with gravitational trains...what the f are we doing...laser cuts and omnibus and that is what good things are made of..do you understand where this can go?
I have no clue on how to get a conversation going on our site. but we need to do that so that all of our efforts are not just going up to shore up an already decayed system. like latter day creationists, or irreducible nonconformists, or for that matter idiots on the left and right...that is what i dream and hope for, a future that is as bright as my granddaughters ideas...hope we can hold a candle to those thoughts. Intelligent Design isn't. This is the very thing that will hold us back from the next great adventure. Hopefully, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu's, Lackawanna's, Red Sox fans and others that we call sentient will rise to the occasion.
There is absolutely no reason that we cannot develop transport and other futuristic methods of getting from here back to there or up to there in the next 50 years if we only have the heart and desire to do so. It is much more enjoyable than worrying about what we will pay for something if we have a hope that the destination will be well worth it. sorry, rambling and rambling.

Very interesting. Charles has been taking the high road and not responding to these creeps. I think Spencer's agenda is becoming more clear as we learn more. What a complete ass.

What sickens me most I think, is that as more and more of these people go there, we increasingly get less and less information about Jihad in America. JihadWatch and DhimmiWatch are (or is it "were" now) good sources of up-to-date info on Islam and what it is doing in America. Oh well, can't go there anymore. Can't find out about Jamaat anymore since GoV were the only folks with the time and/or money and/or balls to actually investigate the actual training facilities. It's like we had all these windows open to watch what's going on, and we now have to shut them. Jamaat ul-Fuqra de-facto doesn't exist anymore, among the non-Genocidal blogs, becuase to admit these camps' existance would mean linking to a Genocidal blog.
Now the only information we'll get is parsing and reading between the lines of local papers' agenda-driven reporting whenever something involving Islam in America is barely reported on by scared dhimmis and willful taqiyya-purveyors at AP, Reuters, and a hundred small local papers. Which means until a Lizard finds a way to do what the now-Genocidal bloggers did, that is, actually investigate and report on Jamaat, and on other important ongoing efforts to Islamize the nation. I cannot just forget that Jamaat exists, much as we'd all like to pretend to.

First thought: is there a way to use the earth to travel from one place to another like a long descending tunnel that goes down then comes up? I read about that someplace and it just kind of went boom. Why don't we do that? Like that elevator stuff that lifts things to stationary orbit? This is the stuff that has been around a while and probably would cost more than the 850gazillion that is talked about but, would pay for itself when our children are grandparents? Isn't this the type of thing that we, our country should fund? What the hell is this thing about fixing the old stuff anyway? Lets get with the future.

Dude, you've taken the high road despite all the shot they've taken at you. It was probably the right thing to do. I think this puts things in a different light. We've been played. I can take the fact that some people want to delude themselves into aligning with VB or even the BNP but this is different. These people clearly have racist/racialist sympathies, I don't think there's much doubt about it at this point. We were all suckered into buying their books and reading their blogs over the years. [Link: www.kejda.net...]

612 Cato the Elder  Wed, Feb 11, 2009 8:28:52pm

I wrote to Spencer as follows:

Dear Robert,

I have long been a reader of Jihad and Dhimmi Watch, and have admired the work you do.

Therefore it is with no little perturbation that I note you having joined the "CAMPAIGN FOR THE 'RECONQUISTA' IN ANATOLIA!", which bills itself as "The official facebook [sic] group for the Reconquest of the Anatolian Penninsular [sic]; a European region in Asia [sic] which is currently being occupied by the illegal Turkish state and [sic] for the humane and peaceable, yet compulsory systematic and wholesale physical repatriation of all Turkish, Arab and Muslim populations living within this area."

One of the three videos posted on the group's page is "The Aryan Nations", which contains Nazi images and propaganda. The group's founder states that "ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED."

I have reported this group to Facebook, and sincerely hope it is removed.

Perhaps you did not read the statement or view the videos before you joined the group. Perhaps you think it is "ein Scherz". I cannot know your mind.

But if, indeed, this group reflects your ideas and goals, then I must respectfully ask that you remove me from your list of Facebook friends and that you also delete my account from your websites, where I go by the name of "Cato the Elder".

If you choose to respond to this note in any public forum, I would greatly appreciate a copy of your answer and the chance to reply in the same forum. Thus, if you answer on Jihad or Dhimmi Watch, please do not delete my account there until I have the opportunity to respond.

Very sincerely yours,

"Cato the Elder"

I would fight with the Italians, and fight with the Germans and fight with the Poles and fight with all of the other kids on the school grounds, and beat the crap out of the 'orange'
we were kids...Our fight at the end however, until I got a good whipping from my mom and dad was that all of the kids got the idea that the jews, yeah we could all fight against them.
What a sick way to grow up back in just about anywhere in the northeast or midatlantic, or southeast, or where-eva.
I'm ashamed for ever feeling that way.

Free Constantinople: 500 Years of Occupation is Enough.

Today marks the anniversary of the real Nakba, or perhaps more precisely the καταστροφή -- the Catastrophe: on this day in 1453, the armies of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II entered Constantinople, marking the end of the Eastern Roman Empire, more commonly known as the Byzantine Empire.

Sigh.

I don't even know where to begin...

Isn't there anyone left who wants to live in Liberty? Anyone who still sees the Enlightenment ideals, dreamed in Europe, enacted in America, for what they are... the best path to a bright future for humanity?

Liberty is caught in a totalitarian pincer movement -- theocrats on one side, ethnic nationalists on the other... and have no illusions, ethnic nationalism is a core belief of the multiculturalists as well.

All I want is government by the people, for the people. I want to send the competent to Washington... or if we're lucky, maybe an expert or two. I don't want to be ruled by the elites, those who feel they are destined for power... by birth, by piety, or by the "correct" education and beliefs.

Ugly times acomin', folks. Be prepared.

This groups proposes that in order to prevent the genocidal disaster which is the new South Africa from exploding into a holocaustic disaster, South Africa be partitioned into two separate independent sovereign states, similar to the original partition of Palestine in 1947: One state for a predominantly Black and Asian population concentrated in the east and in the interior, the other for a predominantly European population concentrated in the west and along the western and central coastline.

re: #659 Cato the Elder

The whole piece is just heaving with blatant naziism:

In order to complete the total ethnic reacquisition of these territories it will become necessary to impose colonial drafts on native civilian populations located in allied occupied Greece, Armenia and Europe and the recalling of the Greek and Armenian diasporas for rapid mass recolonisation of the former Turkish thiefdom, in a scheme similar to the lebensraum project of German occupied eastern territories during World War II.

...

The main aims of this group are to:

. Advocate the total Reconquest and complete reassymilation of the Anatolia penninsular, eastern Thrace, northern Cyprus, Greater Armenia, The Pontus and Antiochia through the medium of Greek, Armenian, Cypriot, Byzantine, Pontic and Syriac National Sovereignty and on an unconditional basis.

. The complete unilateral and unnegotiable permanent ethnic transformation of theses territories in order to coopt the first aim.

Unbelievable stuff.

682 LudwigVanQuixote  Wed, Feb 11, 2009 9:11:44pm

In reply to the critiques of my earlier mathematics...

1. Forgive me for rounding up to 2 X 10^-19 rather than 1.43. I said about.

2. My logic is not flawed at all in terms of prediction vs. postdiction. Suppose I handed you a coin and asked you if it were kosher. The way to check is to flip it 100 times. If you get something close to 50 heads and 50 tails, it is kosher. If you get 2 heads and 98 tails, you can then ask what are the odds that it is still a kosher coin and this just happened randomly. It is the exact same calculation. If I only got two heads, out of 100 trials I would assume that something else was going on because the odds of that happening randomly are in the quadrillions to one.

3. You are correct. About 70% of the rockets fell outside of city limits. That, if taken at face value, assuming a distribution centered on the city, would make one believe that the 30% that landed within city limits had a relatively flat distribution, i.e. the city limits were within one standard dev of the distribution. This is the weak point in the argument. I do not have a map of the impacts to verify this. However, if that is true, the math is correct.

4. If within city limits 40% of the ground is covered by buildings and 60% isn't, it does not matter the footprints of the individual buildings because of the assumption of a flat distribution. Again, that is the weakest point in the argument, assuming the initial data was accurate. However, if it holds, point 4 is valid.

5. The assumptions do not take into account excessively high buildings that absorbed multiple hits. However, I have heard no reports of such a thing from my friends in Israel.

6. I am not personally saying that this is proof of Hashem, however, I like the idea that He is looking out for us a lot, and certainly, if my friend's numbers are correct, then this is one of those "make you say hmmm" things.

I'm not a legal expert but it doesn't seem reasonable to me that you could be held at fault for bringing attention to a connection that he has made himself, and pointing out the obvious concerns that such a connection creates.

I don't see how you could be legally obliged to tell him about how this action of his looks before telling anyone else about it.

re: #539 danhenry1

First thought: is there a way to use the earth to travel from one place to another like a long descending tunnel that goes down then comes up? I read about that someplace and it just kind of went boom. Why don't we do that? Like that elevator stuff that lifts things to stationary orbit? This is the stuff that has been around a while and probably would cost more than the 850gazillion that is talked about but, would pay for itself when our children are grandparents? Isn't this the type of thing that we, our country should fund? What the hell is this thing about fixing the old stuff anyway? Lets get with the future.

See,,,I start going off again...Its all part of my ADD

Wow. Ever hear of the Big Dig? Crazy expensive just to get across town. Never mind about the fact that if it went far enough to be useful it would probably have to cut across the Earth's interior so deep that the heat and pressure would be insane. Even then, it would only shave a modest fraction of the distance off, and flying is faster.

The "elevator" would have to go up thousands of miles, up to geostationary orbit. Imagine the weight of a cable that long. Even if that could be done, as it climbed in altitude it would still have to acquire the kinetic energy you need for that orbit (which is what's so expensive in the first place.

A better idea would be to pursue fusion energy. There's only just so much uranium, plutonium, and thorium in the ground.
