Yon: Photos from Israel

Middle East • Views: 2,513

Michael Yon emailed yesterday, with some photos from Sderot, Israel and the following commentary:

Charles,

I shot these two photos in Sderot, Israel. The first photo shows a few of the hundreds of rockets that the Sderot police have collected, from the thousands that have been fired into cities. The police had stacks of these rockets. In the photo, the policeman was pointing to a factory-made rocket that he said was made in Iran. Most of the “Kassam” rockets are homemade, but they are deadly. About 7,000 have rained down on Israel since the 2005 “cease fire.” Hamas has a habit of firing the rockets when Israeli kids are going to or coming from school. The kids have bomb shelters on their playgrounds! Schools and kindergartens sometimes are hit. Up to a third of the kids in the target cities have PTSD! Little wonder why the Israelis finally reacted and went after Hamas. Meanwhile, some countries and organizations wish to charge the Israelis with war crimes, but nobody is charging Hamas with murder. Is it a crime to protect your kids?

I visited some homes that were hit. Two that I saw were destroyed. The second photo is from inside the home of a 70 year-old woman who, thankfully, was not at home when the rocket blew up her home. Imagine your grandmother coming home to find her home has been destroyed.

I had no idea just how powerful these rockets are, and so I did not bring a wide-angle lens that day. To truly capture what happens to the homes when they are hit, you need a wide-angle lens, but I had only a 50mm. Her home was simply devastated. Some European officials say these rockets are merely a nuisance and Israel overreacted when it attacked Hamas. Those officials are wrong. These rockets are increasingly powerful and thousands have rained down, and Hamas continues to fire at innocent civilians. Hamas needs to be destroyed. They deal in suicide bombers, random rockets, kidnapping and murder.

Last week the United Nations accused Hamas of stealing humanitarian food supplies from its own people. Hamas said it was a mistake! Hamas is like a terrorist version of the Mafia, and the United Nations doesn’t have the guts to stand up to them, so they point the finger at the victim who struck back: Israel.

This dispatch explains more.

Very Respectfully,
Michael Yon

If I were running Israel, ever time visitors from the UN or others who dismiss the rocket attacks as "amateur" or otherwise minor, I'd tell them they'll have living quarters in Sderot.
If they complained, I'd repeat how they dismissed the attacks, and say if they really believe what they say, why is staying in Sderot a problem?
And if they think it is OK for Israelis to live under those conditions, why won't they?

23 Sunlight  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 8:33:01am

If anybody from the IDF Spokesperson or MOD office is on here... you need to address this by getting someone to do up an animated clip of the rockets and their effects. The rocket structure filled with metal pieces. Landing on a street. Landing on a building. Slow motion showing the shrapnel spewing outward (how far, how much impact/force, etc.).

I had no idea just how powerful these rockets are, and so I did not bring a wide-angle lens that day. To truly capture what happens to the homes when they are hit, you need a wide-angle lens, but I had only a 50mm. Her home was simply devastated. For whatever reason, the general public thinks these rockets are like 4th of July fireworks. Probably because Israel has been convinced, somehow, to sit under them all these years. Make the case!

D'oh! Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Whether Stimulus Will Allow Him to Re-Hire Laid Off Workers

President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."

Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.

But after the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again"

"It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill" means re-hiring, he said.

I'm thinking that Barry is getting tired of Jake Tapper.

It would be nice to see Israel address the General Assembly and, during the address, have a heap of Kassams brought in like the sacks of mail in the courtroom scene in "Miracle on 34th Street," and dumped in front of the Assembly.

Fire a few that the UN during the address, while glass and plaster rain down around the Assembly, have the Israeli Representative say; "Hey, it;s just a nuisance."

So, don't tell me knowing a Lizard has anything to do with what they think and feel about certain things. We've seen a lot of meltdowns here, people who we never thought were capable of being a bigot.

From the Drudge (red) link:

The first PDF was 424 pages long and the second PDF was 575 pages long, making the total bill 999 pages long. The House is expected to vote on this 999-page bill Friday, and the Senate either later Friday or Saturday. [Editor's note: The first PDF, as posted on the House Appropriations Committee website as of 8:20 AM Friday morning, had grown by 72 pages to 496 pages, increasing the length of the total document to 1,071 pages.]

Extremely fair...and it would be nice to examine the accuracy between the different systems.

If Israel really wanted to, they could lay waste to the entire area of Gaza and wipe out all the Palestinians. The same way the USA could, if we so chose too. But, since we and the Israelis are still civilized, we do not resort to those tactics. But, if Hamas or Hezbollah or Iran or Al-Qaeda had the same capabilities to destroy that the USA and Israel possess, they would not hesitate to use it. That is still the difference between civilization and barbarity, between us and them....

Indeed, but I doubt the General Assembly would want to see 'em. They'd probably walk out claiming that Israel was grandstanding or something.

In that instance, I'd have the Israelis provide one of the Israeli buses that were blown up by terrorists displayed across from the UN to remind the members of what the terrorists do when they're not stopped by Israeli forces.

More:

The idea of a two-state solution, once popular with many Israelis, is evaporating. More and more Israelis are coming to believe that any appeasement with the Palestinians is merely a reward for terrorism. And so it is. The Palestinians have become prisoners by their own hand. The hand that builds the bombs, wields the guns, and welds the rockets, has caused a fence to be built around them.

They are isolated and imprisoned. But it’s not only Israel who’s done this. The Gaza Strip borders Egypt, and Egypt has done the same. The terrorists are tunneling like rats and the Egyptians and Israelis are trying to locate and destroy the tunnels under their respective fence lines. Who wants the Palestinians? If the Palestinians truly were a peaceful lot, victims only of Israel, one might think that they would have free entry into Egypt. But they do not.

Meanwhile Operation Cast Lead is threatening to unravel international relations.

I bet this insight will soon be on CNN and Fox. No?

Kudos to Michael Yon for his important work.

As for the European officials who consider these rockets "merely a nuisance," would they feel the same way if bullets were fired at their houses every night? Bullets, after all, are smaller than rockets, so they must be an even tinier nuisance, hardly worth noticing.

There would be peace in the Middle East if even just one of two things happened:

1. The terrorist Muslims decided to lay down their arms and stop attacking Israel, or,

2. The weight of world opinion was on the side of Israel, and helped Israel to wipe out these murderers.

Fat chance that either of these things is going to happen any time soon.

This may be old news, but I heard it on Glen Beck while I was driving this morning. Members of Congress had from 7pm last night until 9am this morning to read the stimulus bill. You could not speed read it , much less research & understand it in that time.
A Republican Conmgressman from Texas was on & says that the rush to pass it today is so pelosi can get face time at the signing ceremony.
She is flying to Rome tonight on an 8 day Euro junket & want's it done before she leaves.

Is she going to over to take notes on European style socialized medical insurance, or to take notes on how to nationalize industries, or is she going to see how the different European versions of the IRS manage to squeeze every last Euro out of the citizenry?

Democratic Senator Predicts None of His Colleagues 'Will Have the Chance' to Read Final Stimulus Bill Before Vote

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) predicted on Thursday that none of his Senate colleagues would "have the chance" to read the entire final version of the $790-billion stimulus bill before the bill comes up for a final vote in Congress.

“No, I don’t think anyone will have the chance to [read the entire bill],” Lautenberg told CNSNews.com.

The final bill, crafted by a House-Senate conference committee, was posted on the Website of the House Appropriations Committe late Thurday in two PDF files.

But, the MFMSM reported that "Gaza children are terrified by Israeli jet sonic booms"

I agree, this is a bad thing.

It is not good compensation for the rockets that attack Sderot, because sonic booms don't actually kill or damage - oh, crack a little plaster, now and then, I suppose.

Not to mention, it costs good money, to fly a supersonic jet.

Much better to simply launch a bunch of cheap, inaccurate rockets back into Gaza. Proportionate, right.

We need somebody like Abba Eban in the UN.

Well we've (the U.S.) has had the linkes of John Bolton, Jeane Kirkpatrick and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. And John Danforth who once said this about two children in Sderot who were killed by "crude homemade" rockets.

Now consider what this resolution does not say. It does not mention even one of the 450 Qassam rocket attacks launched against Israel over the past two years. It does not mention two hundred rockets launched this year alone. It does not mention the two Israeli children who were outside playing last week when a rocket suddenly crashed into their young bodies. It does not mention the undisputed fact that Qassam rockets have no military purpose -- that they are crude, imprecise devices of terror designed to kill civilians. It does not mention that Hamas took "credit" for killing these Israeli children and maiming many other Israeli civilians -- calling these deaths and woundings a "victory." It does not mention that the terrorists hide among Palestinian civilians, provoking their deaths, and then use those deaths as fodder for their hatred, lawlessness, and efforts to derail the peace process. It does not mention the complete failure of the Palestinian authority to meet its commitments to establish security among its people. It does not mention any of these facts, nor does it acknowledge the legitimate need for Israel to defend itself. The resolution is totally lacking in balance.

The MSM hides the realities in southern Israel for years as part of their propaganda campaign. They make the public believe the rockets are just noisy fireworks. That's why the majority of the Western public can't understand the Israeli necessity for self defense. The MSM incites the people against Israel to achieve a political goal. They don't report, it's not journalism, it's political propaganda disguised as journalism.

Page by page, line by line.

Fine, I'll keep my mouth shut for now on. I'm starting to learn that there are levels of bigotry, some bigotry is ok if it's someone's certain blend of bigotry, or if it's only a certain level.

Actually, I wasn't suggesting that you stop. More along the lines of you coining a phrase that is instantly understood, so you don't have to spend so much time explaining yourself...

We all know what "clue by for" means, so it saves repeating the definition.

I have no problem with you or anyone that has an issue that tweaks their inner conscience enough that they speak out about it.

I looked at the links/definitions from Walter and Kragar but I still think muster would make more sense. Using mustard raises ( note I didn't use 'begs' - referencing buzzsawmonkey's earlier definiton) the question why not 'cut the pomegranate' - Pomegranate's are hard substances too........

That film is reminiscent of the photographs that people used to take of themselves and their neighbors at lynchings in the US 80 or 90 years ago.

I know you're not doing this, but your quote is VERY close to what I pretty much always expect from lefties I know, when discussing current savagery by the current enemy.

"Yeah? So? White America did the exact same thing back 80 or 90 years ago. We're no different. How dare we judge them."

D.M. County weighs charging inmates for toilet paper

That's why leaders in Des Moines County will consider an idea to charge jail inmates for bathroom tissue to help wipe away a $1.7 million deficit next year.

The county's budget director, Cheryl McVey, said billing inmates for toilet paper could save more than $2,300.

... a photo; an address; a thumbprint; a completed, written firearm safety test; private mental health records; and a fee. And those are only some of the requirements to be licensed!

The bill would further require the attorney general to establish a database of every handgun sale, transfer, and owner's address in America. Moreover, the bill would make it illegal to own or possess a "qualifying firearm" -- defined as "any handgun; or any semiautomatic firearm that can accept any detachable ammunition feeding device…" [emphasis added] without one of the proposed licenses.
