Here’s an open thread as we work on some new code to allow lizards to email each other without using that annoying outdated “Safemail” program…

I'm considering using a form -- if you click the 'Show email' button your username would be a link that brings up a form, allowing someone to send an email to the address we have on file, but not revealing your address to the sender.

The email you receive would contain the sender's LGF username and their email address, so you could then reply with your usual email program.

This would protect you from giving away your email address, unless you wanted to reply to the sender.

New Hampshire Talks Civil War Against Feds

The New Hampshire state legislature took an unbelievably bold step today by introducing a resolution to declare certain actions by the federal government to completely totally void and warning that certain future acts will be viewed as a "breach of peace" with the states themselves that risks "nullifying the Constitution."

This act by New Hampshire is a clear warning to the federal government that they could face being stripped of their power by the States (presumably through civil war)!

Basically the government is spending $1 trillion of the private sector's money (including interest) to enlarge the government. That kind of squeeze on the private sector will certainly delay economic recovery by the private sector. Unless of course, keeping the private sector weak is exactly what the Democrats want . . .

There are many things to be said about the porkfest package. That it is anti-religious isn't one of them.

This is so off the mark that it is a waste of time when there are so many other more important issues inside the bill that ought to get airtime.

More from one of my favorite American Thinker columnists:

Alinsky-ites at the Gates of Talk Radio

"Our new Alinsky-ite in Chief has dropped the gauntlet himself and has signaled to his ready-set-go forces that the battle is on, Rush is the new Bush, and the goal is, in Marx's words, "the absence of opposition to socialism." As Rush Limbaugh raises the most hellacious opposition to socialism in current-day America, he gives no "peace" whatsoever to the Alinsky-ite Administration."

"Euphemisms, such as "community input," "community standards," and "common good for the community" will, I predict, be the code words for ACORN intervention and eventual attempted strangulation of talk radio. Just make it more troublesome and costly for radio stations to broadcast talk shows, and the format will be replaced. But the thug tactics ACORN and the Democrats use will not be billed as "takeover" tactics. No, this fight will be labeled as a worthy effort aimed at "the democratization of radio," just as the Community Reinvestment Act was hailed as the "democratization of lending."

Music to the ears of Obammunists and media lords, who work overtime to convince the masses that all opposition to their communard coup d'etat is the product of uncouth religious right rabble-rousing.

I understand why he did it, but it was a sorry day when Ronald Reagan decided to merge the previously irreligious conservative movement with media-based evangelism to create the "religious right." The father of modern conservatism, Barry Goldwater, opposed it then. He is probably spinning in his grave now.

That would be a huge improvement over the present system, given the number of sock puppets, trolls and general idiots who somehow manage to make it past registration. The quantity that surfaced just in the last 24 hours was astonishing.

If you make the change, I'll use it. Right now my email link is off for the above reason.

Here's what's really sad. If Snow, Collins, and Spector had remained true to Republican values and not provided the 60+ votes to pass the stimulus bill the Republicans would have had the leverage needed to make significant changes to the bill. A wasted opportunity.

It's a bad day for America and the GOP.

One of the best shows I ever saw was the Neville Brothers in a beer tent. I ended up sitting on their equipment boxes behind the stacks of amps on stage right. All I could see was the band, none of the crowd.

This is part of a larger movement among states. There are quite a number (37 IIRC) that have states rights laws in various states of progression. A lot of it comes from federally mandated and unfunded programs/requirements.

No, this fight will be labeled as a worthy effort aimed at "the democratization of radio," just as the Community Reinvestment Act was hailed as the "democratization of lending."

...Kyle-Anne Shiver

Ft. Sumter comes to mind...

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the Rockford Illinois Economic Stimulus Proposal (large 9+ meg pdf). It’s a good example of the stimulus begging that’s going on at the local level. All local governments have been told to make list of all their ‘shovel ready’ projects. So now the race is on as to which town/county is the worse off.
For example: “The City of Rockford has been ranked with the highest unemployment in the State of Illinois 11 out of the last 17 years” and “The City of Rockford has the highest crime rate in the State of Illinois” etc.

It’s funny and sick at the same time. Get ready too, they are all going to do the same thing next year. I have no doubt this stimulus scam is now part of the annual budget process.

From a creationist:

The world is going to hell and you are obsessed (not an accidental
choice of words) with teaching intel design. But anyhow, your open
thread is disingenuous, or ignorant, or plain old leftist-like tactics.
First of all Darwinism does nothing to explain how the mass of whatever
came to be, or how that mass came to be life. Quite a little void there
- in fact the biggest void in the whole evolution theory (which isn't
really even a valid scientific theory). Second, Darwinism is merely
natural selection (only the small end of the whole question), which can
easily be deemed pretty intelligent because it results in the
genetically strong, diverse world we have. I believe you can do a bit
better!

No, this fight will be labeled as a worthy effort aimed at "the democratization of radio," just as the Community Reinvestment Act was hailed as the "democratization of lending."

...Kyle-Anne Shiver

We neeed to go on the offensive. Why don't conservative groups litigate against NPR and PBS. If ever there was a target for a Fairness Doctrine, those 2 are it. They literally do take public money and yet are skewed almost entirely to the left.
Suing them would bring the issue into the public eye and provide a target that easily fits the FD model and can be described as such, fairly easily.
Once that picture is drawn in the public's mind, it can also be used as a foil to the attack on Talk Radio. The differences between the 2 venues are like night and day and could be used to illustrate (and also defuse) the inherent hypocricy in enforcing it against one and not the other. One deserves FD, the other is the Voice of Freedom.

"We strongly object to Sen. Feinstein's remarks being characterized as anything other than a reference" to a article that appeared last March in the Washington Post, LaVelle said. Feinstein did not refer to newspaper accounts during the hearing."

Kisses unleash chemicals that ease stress levels

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

"Chemistry look what you've done to me," Donna Summer crooned in Science of Love, and so, it seems, she was right. Just in time for Valentine's Day, a panel of scientists examined the mystery of what happens when hearts throb and lips lock. Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourage bonding in men, though not so much in women.

Chemicals in the saliva may be a way to assess a mate, Wendy Hill, dean of the faculty and a professor of neuroscience at Lafayette College, told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Friday.

In an experiment, Hill explained, pairs of heterosexual college students who kissed for 15 minutes while listening to music experienced significant changes in their levels of the chemicals oxytocin, which affects pair bonding, and cortisol, which is associated with stress. Their blood and saliva levels of the chemicals were compared before and after the kiss.

Both men and women had a decline in cortisol after smooching, an indication their stress levels declined.

For men, oxytocin levels increased, indicating more interest in bonding, while oxytocin levels went down in women. "This was a surprise," Hill said.

In a test group that merely held hands, chemical changes were similar, but much less pronounced, she said.

The experiment was conducted in a student health center, Hill noted. She plans a repeat "in a more romantic setting."

Hill spoke at the session on the Science of Kissing, along with Helen Fisher of Rutgers University and Donald Lateiner of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Fisher noted that more than 90 percent of human societies practice kissing, which she believes has three components — the sex drive, romantic love and attachment.

The sex drive pushes individuals to assess a variety of partners, then romantic love causes them to focus on an individual, she said. Attachment then allows them to tolerate this person long enough to raise a child.

Men tend to think of kissing as a prelude to copulation, Fisher said. She noted that men prefer "sloppy" kisses, in which chemicals including testosterone can be passed on to the women in saliva. Testosterone increases the sex drive in both males and females.

"When you kiss an enormous part of your brain becomes active," she added. Romantic love can last a long time, "if you kiss the right person."

Lateiner, a classical scholar, observed that kissing appears infrequently in Greek and Roman art, but was widely practiced, despite the spread of skin disease at that time by facial kissing. And there was a potential for social faux pas by kissing the wrong person at the wrong time.

Overall, the science of kissing — philematology — is under-researcherd, Hill concluded.

His explanation is that it was a huge conspiracy, a setup -- I created the Facebook group, in cahoots with Cato the Elder, then tricked him into joining it so that I could lie about him and smear him.

He's tipped over into full-blown paranoia.

Maybe he has good reason to be paranoid. Just because he's paranoid
doesn't mean somebody, not you, is not out to get him.

These are very unusual times. I won't judge him on a single failure, I will judge him on his works as a whole.

About the Census

Reagan-era Census Bureau Director Bruce Chapman explains the giant pile of dog shit the President just stepped in:

But the legal issues will remain even if a willing partisan is nominated and confirmed as Commerce Secretary. There is a 1999 Supreme Court ruling that would make sampling-based adjustment difficult in the absence of compelling evidence that the customary hard count would be less credible. And that evidence not only is lacking, but a three year statistical study that was finished in 2003 to respond to this issue concluded just the opposite: adjusting the Census numbers through sampling and computer models could lead to a less credible Census result. A hard count has always been legally defensible. A fuzzy "adjusted" Census--where figures at the Census tract and block level would be demonstrably erroneous in many cases--could invite endless litigation and bad will.

Another problem for the Obama White House if it wants to change the Census approach: planning for the 2010 Census has been underway for years and now is in preparation for testing. The disruptions caused by an Administration decision to change those plans would cause great problems and probably agitate the resistance of career statisticians charged with responsibility for conducting the Census.

Finally, one wonders if the President understands that the Census is a function of government that requires not only integrity in fact but also the appearance of integrity. The reputation of the Census should not be compromised. It is hard enough to get people to cooperate in the conduct of the Census without creating a reputation for politicization.

There is an echo here from the presidential debates. Senator McCain kept saying "What my colleague from Illinois doesn't understand is..." and variations thereof about everything from the economy to the war in Georgia. During one debate Obama became visibly annoyed that anyone would think or imply that he is ignorant.

But it's a legitimate question. Does the president have any idea what he is doing and why is he acting this way? It's entirely possible, from what I've seen, that he doesn't. At the beginning, I suppose we could just put it down to Bambi shakily finding his feet. But the President claims to have been preparing the transition for months. The transition is over, he's in power, now it's time to lead.

I'll tell you what his problem has always been. He has no vision of his own, so he's just getting jerked around by everyone who's got his ear. That's why he keeps nominating folks without vetting them. Because he's been told to. That's why he wanted to have the Census Bureau Director report to the White House. Minority groups with Emanuel's phone number complained, so he did what he was told.

Will the President ever grow up and actually take power? Would we even want him to?

Great comment from the end, by "mike d":

In 1999, I was visted by a Census taker at my residence. We spent a harmless minutes as she walked me through all the census questions I apparently did not fill out beforehand which is why they came to see me for a hard-count visit I guess.

If the Obama WH gets its grubby corrupt little rat claws on the census and tries to turn it into Operation Grow ACORN, I will refuse to participate. If a census taker comes to my house as one did in '99, I will explain politely but assertively that I dont trust that the data collected from me will be used to create and accurate, fair non-political census, and if you want to arrest me, go right ahead, I'll see you in court.

Just buttressing bulwrk's argument/statement/quote... According to the founding fathers as expressed in the Constitution, the states (including New Hampshire) retain rights not delegated to the federal government or prohibited by the constitution.

To my eyes, New Hampshire's resolution says merely that with a lot more words.

I can't find them right now, but I think I've seen that Oklahoma, Alaska, and Montana have been working on similar resolutions.

Kind of a snarky reply to an innocent remark.

I'm very well aquainted with the Constitution, thank you. What you seem to forget is that most of the firewalls have been breached and the "people" (including the states as a body politic) have been voicing no outrage over the trespasses.

Jimmah, I'm just passing by but my guess is that the jQuery Media plugin parses for the 'v' parameter first in the URL and then converts it to video; if it doesn't find it first, it ignores it so your link remains a link instead of a video. Your link up above has the parameters 'gl' and 'hl' just ahead of v in the URL string (language-specific parameters, I suppose). A stripped down version of your link works:

Yeah, I've always thought that as well, though I'm glad we remained united in the end.

Agreed! And I still like the idea of the states pushing back on an intrusive federal government. They've been encroaching for years and it's time to draw a line in the sand! They certainly have no power without our money! Maybe it's time for a boycott? Starve em out and show em who's boss?

I'm a student at the University of Toronto and coming up in a couple of weeks is Israeli Apartheid Week. Showcasing lots of Arabist and pro-Palestinian lecturers and giving air time to these opinions without conceding the other viewpoint. What can I do? I'm tired of pulling my hood over my head and walking quickly by these creeps. Though I don't really want to get laryngitis by arguing either. I feel so trapped at my own school. Its such a lost and hopeless feeling. This is what the organizers undoubtedly want and i wish i could skip ahead in time just to be rid of this annoyance and get on with real life.

Get in touch with the campus Hillel people. They do have a Hillel there, right? Or has it been run off the campus?

Alternatively, call the JDL and see if they'll get involved.

There ought at least to be a counter-demonstration.

I lived in Golden Valley for a week before I moved just outside Edina. I didn't know they had music venues there. bummer.

It was mostly cover bands. Occasionally they'd do a touring act. They don't do live music any more, that I know of. Rupert's was one of those McDonald's Playland kind of places for the rich western 'burb folks.

Is there a word in the Constitution on the subject of secession?

When the 13 sovereign states signed and ratified the Articles of Confederation, they permanently gave up the right to leave the United States, period. It was a binding contract. The Constitution is merely organizational details.

As I said, secessionists should buy an island. I like little countries. They should be little monarchies, with little parliaments, and lots of fancy uniforms, like Monaco. Maybe the tourists will come.

re: #411 justadot

Jimmah, I'm just passing by but my guess is that the jQuery Media plugin parses for the 'v' parameter first in the URL and then converts it to video; if it doesn't find it first, it ignores it so your link remains a link instead of a video. Your link up above has the parameters 'gl' and 'hl' just ahead of v in the URL string (language-specific parameters, I suppose). A stripped down version of your link works:

Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar

There may be easier ways to fix this…

You're right about the reason, but it isn't the Media plugin's fault - it was in my code that extracts the video ID. It's now fixed so that parameters out of order will also produce an embedded video.

Touchy now! You are demonstrating why I always tell people that we are not republic. Our institutions are often endowed with a monarchical, or even theocratic holiness, which is one reason for their success, I'll grant you. President 43 considers it his duty to hand off the office to 44, etc.

BUT, people often think that if it was placed in the constitution in 1787, it's sacred text.

By the way, the Constitution denies the federal government the right to issue hereditary titles, but apparently, allows the states to do so. If it is allowed, it must be done. I know, let's have a grand auction of hereditary titles to raise money for university education.

Well, I didn't realize that a story wasn't valid if a site also posted stories espousing an unpopular view. Since the MFM doesn't put many stories up about the action/prejudices of the left-wing liberal academia and their attacks upon those of faith, I'm stuck with using what's available. In fact, your reaction is a validation of my theory that some of the support for creationism in schools is driven by Christians feeling marginalized and insulted so frequently in a public Academic setting. (They're trying to counteract the corrosive bigotry and prejudice present in many schools.)

White House books Brown's flight to D.C.

A government plane will ferry Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) back to Washington from his mother's wake in Ohio in time to vote tonight, courtesy of the White House.

Brown won’t even be leaving until viewing hours end at 8 p.m. He then travels back to Washington votes and flies back for his mother’s funeral tomorrow morning.

Thank you. My only reservation is what my family would potentially go through courtesy of our "impartial" MFMSM. Who knows though, maybe many of the current news outlets will be bankrupt and unable to practice their dishonest brand of journalism reporting, ah hell SHIT.

Let's hope so. Understand the concerns about the family and you gotta protect them but there's plenty of us out there that would flock to aid, at least morally.
Also would be good to have miltary types like you in the fight. Many of the Principles of War apply to politics as well as to miltary affairs and applied correctly can be very effective.

While in the house there were no Republicans who voted for it, in the senate the three turncoats voted for it: Collins, Specter, and Snowe.

If the three Dems vote for it, it goes to the president.

Had I been paying attention, I would have known the Arnold's of our day would have voted for it. I even posted an article in an earlier thread on these three.

Thanks for correcting my earlier statement.

Uh, no. When I looked into the story, it turned out that the school was using textbooks from the fundamentalist Bob Jones University, teaching young earth creationism as science. The WND article completely left out that information from their story.

Eight members of a man's poverty-ridden family were shot and beheaded before their bodies were thrown into a river in eastern India after he secretly married a wealthy girl, police said Wednesday.

Police in the eastern state of Bihar found the eight bodies floating in a river and have charged 15 people, mostly from the girl's family, with the murders.

...

"The girl's family invited the boy's family for a meeting on the pretext of settling the dispute, but killed all eight and beheaded them," said Raghunath Prasad Singh, a senior police officer from Bhagalpur, where the incident took place.

You are quite correct. However, I was almost 30 years younger under Carter, and we still haven't totally recovered from his ... unfortunate ... incumbency. No, I don't like thinking this way, since at heart I'm an optimist ... but not even my native optimism is enough to make me think things will improve noticeably in my remaining (maybe) 20 years.

In an experiment, Hill explained, pairs of heterosexual college students who kissed for 15 minutes while listening to music experienced significant changes in their levels of the chemicals oxytocin, which affects pair bonding, and cortisol, which is associated with stress.

Similar to the question Rush asked when they were raising the minimum wage; "why not make the minimum wage $20? or $30?"

THEY. JUST. DO. NOT. UNDERSTAND. ECONOMICS.

Here’s an open thread as we work on some new code to allow lizards to email each other without using that annoying outdated “Safemail” program...

Below this on the right is a row of icons.
Below the icons is "spinoff links (21)" ... where the number is the current tally of links posted on this thread. Click on that to view the spinoffs. A spinoff entry box will appear at the end of the list.

THAT's where you enter a spinoff link.
(I think you can do the same from the LGF front page too.)

Then emailed Voinovich (R-OH) and thanked him for not voting for it the first time and asked if he was going to make sure the public knows what is in this bill and how it came to be if it does pass. Hi all,

This is just a hit and run since little Hawk has a TaeKwonDo Belt Test in a bit.

A friend of mine, a San Diego County Sheriffs Deputy that works at the Courthouse, sent the following email this afternoon. He's Lizard material, but a bit on the busy side so doesn't have much time for blogging.

Okay I saw this video in my "Law Enforcement Sensitive" class of "Radicalization of Prison Inmates" what this guys says is all true.
What the rest of the country doesn't know, because the Lamestream er uh I mean main stream media doesn't report, are acts of home grown terror in the US are on the rise and Homeland Security is all over it. For now.
Basically, inmates are become Muslims in prison, getting recruited by radicals here, sent for Al Queda training over in the middlke east, then coming back to do terror acts here. Points to consider:
1. The terrorists do not want another 9-11 type incident, draws too much attention and only angers and unifies the US
2. they want to attack from within, against our infrastructure/economy with smaller attacks
3. these groups mainly DO NOT have ties to Middle East radicals, they are spontaneously starting themselves in prison, recruiting crooks with criminal skills to make money on the outside for the cause, and THEN try to attach to main middle eastern terror groups like Hamas, Al Queda and the like
4. Much intel is not known on these groups other than they exist
5. anyone can become Muslim, self appoint yourself a sheik or an Imam, and begin the propaganda rhetoric in prisons to attract more followers...which is what these idiots are doing.
6. they recruit well known gnags like crips, bloods, etc
7. a few whites involved and some Hispanics, largely blacks
8. ALL ARE MUSLIM groups...NO Christian or Jeweish ones exist...go figure.

Enjoy your weekend. Buy guns and ammo.

The opposite of down, typically represented by the negative of the local gravity vector. However, this is linked to the Earth's curvature in the traditional sense. If one adopts a Newtonian frame of reference and selects an absolute origin, "Up" will have a constant value that will appear to vary from the Earth-based value.

Regarding Drone basing in Pakistan:

Before bloggers go overboard please note that the drone bases have been known about by the Taliban for awhile, they even mounted an attack on the strip in Peshawar back in December.

Here's a snip from an article in Asia Times from Syed Shahzad from back in October, he embeds with the Taliban, if he knows it you can bet the Taliban does, and I've seen other articles on the bases in Pakistani papers, I'm still digging for those.

The war in Pakistan
The recent thread of events seems to start from a huge training program which the US has called an essential component in fighting the militancy in Pakistan. US Admiral Mike Mullen told the Los Angeles Times that American forces have secured bases north of Islamabad to train Pakistani soldiers. However, sources have told Asia Times Online that the situation on the ground reveals much more than a training program.

Hasanpur, a small town situated along the Ghazi Brotha Canal six kilometers from Tarbella Ghazi, is the center of activity. Sources in Pakistani security agencies told Asia Times Online that the airstrip in Hasanpur has been upgraded to war readiness in the last few weeks and new hangars have been built for military aircraft. Underground shelters, bunkers and tunnels have also been constructed. Following the arrival of American "training advisory groups", British military personnel were flown in and have reportedly taken over management of the facility.

Sources claim that the logistical capabilities of the US and British personnel, and extraordinary measures they have taken to upgrade the airstrip, suggest something far more advanced than a simple training site.

The security sources also maintain that new installations in the Hasanpur mountains are geared for direct participation in military operations. At the least, they are said to be capable of conducting independent drone operations from the high-altitude Hasanpur area.
