Weird • Views: 3,779

Believe it or not, there are still some Republican politicians who refuse to let go of the world’s stupidest conspiracy theory: Lawmakers look dumb for reviving Obama hoax.

Four Tennessee state representatives, all Republicans, have signed up to be plaintiffs in a lawsuit against President Barack Obama, aimed at forcing him to prove he is a United States citizen by coughing up his birth certificate.

Let me just say what all the world is now thinking, including their fellow Republicans on the Hill: This is dumber than a box of rocks.

Tennessee Reps. Eric Swafford, Stacey Campfield, Glen Casada and Frank Nicely now have a giant “G” on their foreheads for “Gullible.” The four were so willing to drink the craziest flavor of Kool-Aid, they’ve gotten themselves caught up in a national urban legend that has been thoroughly debunked.

British and French Nuclear Subs Crash in Atlantic

British and French nuclear submarines which collided deep under the Atlantic could have sunk or released deadly radioactivity, it emerged on Sunday.

The Royal Navy’s HMS Vanguard and the French Navy’s Le Triomphant are both nuclear powered and were carrying nuke missiles.

Between them they had around 250 sailors on board.

A senior Navy source said: “The potential consequences are unthinkable. It’s very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion.

“But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have lost the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster.”

The collision is believed to have taken place on February 3 or 4, in mid-Atlantic. Both subs were submerged and on separate missions.

As inquiries began, naval sources said it was a millions-to-one unlucky chance both subs were in the same patch of sea. Warships have sonar gear which locates submarines by sound waves.

But modern anti-sonar technology is so good it is possible neither boat “saw” the other.

A senior military source said: “The lines between London and Paris have been hot.”

The MoD insisted last night there had been no nuclear security breach. But this is the biggest embarrassment to the Navy since Iran captured 15 sailors in 2007. The naval source said: “Crashing a nuclear submarine is as serious as it gets.”

Pakistan Truce Includes Enforcement of Islamic Law

Pakistani officials closed in on a peace deal with a Taliban-linked group Sunday that could lead to enforcement of Islamic law in a part of the country that is supposed to be fully under government control. Militants in the Swat Valley responded by declaring a 10-day cease-fire as a goodwill gesture.

The agreement is expected to be formally announced Monday — and draw criticism from the United States, which has said such deals merely give insurgents time to regroup.

I don't go to movies, so I don't know the local movie ticket price. Our ticket prices are 20.00 (18 for seniors and student). Average live theatre prices for small theatre's in the Denver area are 20-45. And price does not reflect quality, it reflects venue size and facility.

We are an award winning theatre, nominated and winner of many local theatre awards and considered one of the best theatre's in the state.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is the largest venue in town and they have 7 theatre's in one location, from a small cabaret sized room to a 2500 seat music hall (broadway road shows). The prices there start at about 35 and go up to 125, depending on the show and which of the seven venues.

thats not my point.

My point was that he then makes the joke that they must be creationists. My whole discussion in the other thread was that I felt the tenor of the creationist conversation tended to belittle people of faith (not just the ones that wanted to replace school curriculum's).

His joke (and I know it was a joke....and I know he didnt really mean much by it) was kind of what i am referring to. He is essentially saying they must be religious folks who accept the doctrine of creationism because they are also nutjobs.
But its these little jibes that accumulate until we dont even realizing we are insulting good people.

I am agnostic on the whole thing. But right now, there is a massive meltdown in trust. Obama just decided that he wasn't going to do a car czar he was going to do some sort of inter-program committee with Summers and Geithner. Great. We just had Porkulus pass last week and 58% of the public according to a Rasmussen survey believes that the lawmakers didn't have the foggiest idea what was in it. We have had massive idiocy on the hill and ex ante junk all over the place like Dodd's rot. Right now, people do not trust that they will even have a shadow if the sun shines. In that kind of business environment, you do not climb out of a recession. Mr. Obama can restore some of the trust in himself by releasing his college stuff and the stuff about his trip to Pakistan. If all is as he says, then it will begin to restore trust. That is a starting point. Its not all we need, but its a start. Until people can trust that they will have a job, they will not buy. Until they feel that they have a reliable base of government policy they will not hire. If they will not hire, folks will not have a job. If they do not have a job, they will not buy. If they will not buy, then companies will not hire. It chases its own tail. You need trust here. These guys are just absolutely contradicting themselves every 10 seconds. I am an investor. I will not invest into that sort of environment when I can't figure out what the macro economics of the situation are going to be tomorrow. Lets get back to basics. As long as there continues to be doubt here, it will not advance Mr. Obama's cause or America's cause. Lets get it out in the open and move on and bury this if it has no merit.

Just so. The problem is that a "Mr. 10%" like him will tend to be risk averse: Many crooked pols get caught by being too greedy (as witness Blago), so those that have made theft a long-standing practice tend to be cautious. They also tend to want to flee rather than fight. To stand and boldly fight to take a principled stand and that is something foreign to a crook like Zardari. Their chief instinct is to pay off someone they can't easily squash. They also often have a hard time with the idea that the opposition might value things other than wealth and luxury. I live Cook County, I know Zardari's type.

I don't think Glenn Beck runs a credible program. It's entertaining and frankly rather funny after having a beer or two but overall it comes across as a "morning show" of sorts with a lot of special effects and sound effects.

His joke (and I know it was a joke....and I know he didnt really mean much by it) was kind of what i am referring to. He is essentially saying they must be religious folks who accept the doctrine of creationism because they are also nutjobs.

Mr. Obama can restore some of the trust in himself by releasing his college stuff and the stuff about his trip to Pakistan. If all is as he says, then it will begin to restore trust. People aren't reacting to the economy because he hasn't disclosed who paid for his college, his grades, his trip to Pakistan, or any other weasely bullshit. Obama has picked, is picking a cabinet. His Treasury Sec - the guy who was indispensible to the process and was supposed to release a detailed plan for the banks - failed in this and the market tanked. That's trust that has to be regained. Obama has picked 4 cabinet nominees or senior advisors that have pulled out / forced to step down because of tax / corruption / major policy issues - that's trust that has to be regained. For a supposedly new way of doing things including bi-partisanship, we have a trillion dollar spending bill rammed through with 3 out of 219 republicans supporting it, we have his COS going to oversee the next census, and all of these things have their own levels of trust concerns with the American people.

That's why the people are concerned - not because of this other bullshit! The economy is in trouble and they don't know or think that Obama's plan, modified by Reid and Pelosi, will solve the mess. Hell, most American's don't even know the real reasons behind this mess. They are not thinking about nirth certificates or school transcripts.

No, nothing will 'kill and bury' it. There will always be another test, another document. It's ludicrous. He 'might' have secretly become a Kenyan citizen. At this point, even if it were proved beyond all doubt that Obama was born in Kenya, the election would have to stand. The nation could not endure the ruckus that a supreme court order to overturn the election and swear in McCain would provoke.

The court, if it has any sense, won't take the case. They can say it's groundless. It is. But, hypothetically, if the allegations were true, it would be all the more prudent for the court to decline to hear the case. Whatever the facts, they're water under the bridge.

Unless someone has the court documents that prove that Obama, at or after 18, formally renounced his US citizenship and never applied for its reinstatement, then all of what you are claiming is just a crock. It doesn't matter if he travelled under a different passport unless he went to a country that is prohibited to American citizens (like Cuba) and even then - the crime is no worse than the pot he smoked or the coke he snorted in his college days.

When there are plenty of real issues to focus on - don't waste your time thinking so small.

Not only does Campfield want to force women who have abortions to obtain death certificates, he's sponsoring another really weird and creepy law that bars the state from recognizing the fathers of stillborn children of unmarried women. Here's another of this year's Campfield Specials: He'd deny a birth certificate to the child of an illegal immigrant unless the father is a U.S. citizen and makes a written agreement to provide for the child until age 18.

Of course, the suspect constitutionality of any of Campfield's legislation is a matter of no concern to the sponsor. Luckily for us all, he's yet to pass a bill in his entire legislative career, and the House doesn't waste much time talking about his proposals, either. In the past, they've just about all been summarily killed in subcommittees. This year should be not much different, despite a more Republican House. Speaker Kent Williams hates Campfield and his ilk and probably will insist on killing all his bills.

The Supreme Court of the United States has already ruled on this, so I don't understand why these four would join in a lawsuit other than to "play to their base".

When I was about 14, I was walking through this swamp behind my house at dusk, and saw something rustling next to my feet. I reached down, and this snake latched onto my thumb.

I'm unsure whther it was the Incas, the Mayans, or the Aztecs, but one of them had stone gods with holes where the hearts should be, and their priests kept those holes filled with beating hearts from a steady supply of sacrifices.

All three groups did human sacrifice, although I have an idea that could be wrong that the Inca did it less commonly. The Aztecs were way into it. Weird, very interesting, culture. I ain't got much love for the conquistadors, but I can imagine that Cortes' head exploded a little when he got a look at Aztec religion in full swing.

Fears are growing that Ireland could default on its national debt after the cost to insure against possible losses on loans to the country rose to record highs at the end of last week.

Credit ratings agency Moody's recently followed rival Standard & Poor's in warning it might downgrade Irish debt, amid fears that one of Europe's former success stories is falling into a deepening recession. The cost to hedge against losses on Irish debt tripled last week to a record 355 basis points - meaning that for every £100 of debt, investors have to pay £3.55 to insure against default, according to data firm CMA Datavision. It was about 262 basis points at the end of January.

If they ever wise up about America's debt, it's gonna be 'Katie bar the door'.

Moody's has warned there is a more than 50% chance Ireland will lose its triple A rating within 12 to 18 months.

Obama DID release a certificate of live birth, directly from the State of Hawaii. And the State of Hawaii made an official statement that they DO have his actual birth certificate on file. And there are records from both major Honolulu newspapers, showing the announcement of Barack Obama's birth.

All of this has been covered and covered and covered, over and over over at this site, and at many other sites.

I've reached my limit with it, long ago. It's your choice whether you want to continue posting here or not, but I'm simply not going to put up with any more craziness about Obama's birth certificate.

On the other hand, I played a gig once and our manager/agent (a woman) couldn't find the club owner at the end of the engagement so we could get paid. An employee motioned for her to go downstairs, into the basement. She asked me to go with her, and we found the guy wearing a sweater and no pants (which is a hilarious look) with a woman (not his wife) with nothing on except a shirt pulled up to her shoulders. They were passed out.

These things do happen, I guess. But the hydraulic lift thing...what a way to go.

Right. Coulter even says that Obama's church is MUCH WORSE than the CCC -- and as bad as Rev. Wright and his church are, this claim is beyond ridiculous.

The CCC website is an outright white supremacist site with ties to neo-Nazis. To claim that Trinity United Church is worse than this is a deliberate distortion, and it's an incredibly sleazy argument, that's intended to play to the GOP base's sense of victimhood.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A nude, screaming dancer found trapped under a man's crushed body on a trick piano that became pinned against a nightclub ceiling was too drunk to remember how she got there, police said.

Authorities on Thursday said they were awaiting the results of an autopsy on James (Jimmy the Beard) Ferrozzo, 40.

His body was 2 or 3 inches of cushion that kept her from being crushed. His fully-clothed body was found on top of Teresa Hill, 23, a dancer at the Condor Club where Ferrozzo was an assistant manager. Detectives would not speculate on the circumstances of the death.

Ferrozzo probably saved the woman's life with a last-second kick that cut the switch on the motorized piano hoist, said fire Lt. Jim Lyons, whose rescue crew was called to the club. The body provided two or three inches of cushion that kept the woman from being crushed, he said.

The baby grand piano had been used for almost 20 years by entertainer Carol Doda, who made her entrance by reclining across the instrument while it was lowered by cable to the stage of the topless club.

"If I were to speculate on the cause of death, it would be asphyxiation as a result of being crushed," Detective Guinther Whitey said.

Police discovered shards of glass and blood spattered in the club. A little blood was found by the bar, but Detective Guinther Whitey said he couldn't be sure where it came from. "The young lady had a couple of cuts on her hand," he said.

The dancer said she had been dating Ferrozzo since her arrival in San Francisco two weeks ago.

No one is certain what caused the piano to rise toward the 12-foot-high ceiling, but something or someone may have bumped the switch, on the wall near the piano, Detective Marvin Dean said.

"I don't see how this could possibly have happened," said a young woman who identified herself as Desiree, a dancer at the club.

"When you get on the piano, it goes up so slow, they should have noticed it," she said. "They could have jumped off."

Hill was rescued after someone heard her shouts for help.

"She was so intoxicated she doesn't even remember getting on the piano," Whitey said. "She just remembers waking up and being pinned on the piano."

Hill was treated for bruises at a hospital.

The law for National office elections needs to be changed to compel the applicant for legal campaign to verify complete eligability under the law to run for the office.

I thought that was a law to begin with, but evidently it is not.

At this point, the American people have spoken, and whether or not Obama shows proof of eligibility, the election is over. Period ... Get over it. A successful chalklenge of this issue would only result in harm to the country.

I didn't want Obama. (Didn't want McCain either) but I would have chosen RINO McCain over Obama in a heartbeat.

But it's over. The fat lady has sung, the lights are out, the campaign is over.

Further demands of cumpulsion for Obama to show a (real" birth certificate will most likely result in problems for the country, and problems for the Conservative movement, WHICHEVER WAY THE TRUTH GOES.

Let it do. Let this one die, finally.

The right (like me) realize that we need to win the hearts and minds of the American people before we DESERVE to hold national leadership positions again.

I am proud of the Republicans who voited against the stealfromus bill in the House andf Senate. And I curse the 3 RINOs who crossed the party lines to approve of this HIGHLY PARTISAN crap-sandwich.

The nirthers need to get a life and win back the power with honorable arguments, not this BC rubbish.

Isn't a birth certifcate a public document? Like a death certificate?

Inquire State of Hawaii vital statistics or something along those lines?

Though I suppose if someone is claiming he renounced his citizenship and he really didn't, how do you prove a negative like that?

First off...I am Jewish. Not particularly religious but grew up in conservadox environs.
Agreed that mentioning someone is a creationist is not necessarily an attack. But we are talking about YOUR comment. The answer to the first question would seem to require an even more complex creator of a complex universe-creating deity (one bright and powerful enough to create the universe would have to be more complex than the universe itself), which itself would require an even more complex creator of it, and so on in infinite regress. The second question would be answered by spontaneous abiogenesis, and subsequent evolution via random genetic mutation and nonrandom environmental selection, over a period exceeding 3 1/2 billion years (fossilized traces of carbon-based lifeforms have been discovered that date that far back). I dont believe our finite minds can adequately grasp the infinite as it pertains to questions of god or the universe. It is a concept we will never be able to grasp fully no matter how much we try to "logic it out" and thus there needs to either be a leap of faith to fill in the gap or simply understand that we wont understand. No need to come up with BS theories that always end in infinite regress. Infinite regress is not an answer.

That is a good point and one I agree with. However, there are many who seem to think that they have already arrived at the answer when in fact they haven't and will likely not be able to.
Currently, it is impossible to prove god exists. That doesnt mean she doesn't. It is also impossible to prove God doesn't exist.

It would seem that many have concluded that there is no god. I have accepted that this "logical proof" will elude me forever just as it has eluded he great philosophers before us despite some of them "thinking " they had arrived at proof. this is a vacuum that you either let faith step in or you dont. I dont think that those who let faith fill that vacuum are kooks or worthy of scorn as I mention above

You repeat your appeal to mystery, then claim that infinite regress is not an answer while failing to point out exactly WHY it is not logically entailed by the question.

Soren Kierkegaard may have written movingly about relinquishing his freedom and objectivity and making such a leap, but I prefer to keep my feet on solid logical and empirical ground, and to choose where I walk on it.

Our sciences, which proceed by induction according to the Verification Principle, are sciences of matter and energy. The sine qua non (condition in the absence of which they would not be what they are) of matter and energy is that they be sensorily perceivable phenomena. These immanent objects of perception are then measured by relating our perceptions of them to our perceptions of intersubjectively agreed-upon standards of measurement which are themselves physical. These quantified perceptions must then be amenable to repetition at will by means of any duplication of the conditions under which they appear. This method cannot be used to either verify or falsify the presence or absence of transcendent nonphysical Mind. Our sensuous perceptions, our technological augmentation of them, our devices of measurement, our method of repetition are all immanent and physical; they are categorically incapable of this task. We cannot prove God is anywhere, and neither can we prove that there is anywhere God is not.

I understand the scorn for those arguing that Obama was born in Kenya. (He has produced a certification of live birth indicating his place of birth as Hawaii, and that document should create a presumption that he was, in fact, born in Hawaii). However, I don't understand why the entire issue is strictly verboten.

The cases also raise an interesting legal issue that could tangentially impact illegal immigration. Is a citizen born with dual citizenship and dual loyalties a "natural born citizen" as that term is defined in the Constitution? That is an issue that has never been addressed by the courts. US v. Wong Kim Ark applied the 14th Amendment to give those born on US soil citizenship rights, but that case has been criticized -- particularly its application to illegal immigrants (Ark's parents were legal), and that case just determined citizenship status and did not determine who is a "natural born citizen." Is there a difference between "citizen at birth" and "natural born citizen" as that phrase was used in the Constitution? This question has not been decided and raises interesting issues. Ask Emerich de Vattel.

Note: I am not a creationist, and , in fact, I myself might not be a "natural born" citizen even though I am a second generation American citizen. My grandfather was an Italian citizen (he later naturalized as a US citizen) when he gave birth to my father here in the US, and later my father sired me here in the US. However, due to Italian nationality law passing citizenship via male parentage, since my grandfather was an Italian citizen, my father was technically a dual (US -Italian) citizen and that dual citizenship was passed on to me -- though I am as American as Bevis and Butthead. I find it fascinating that under the understanding of the Constitution when it was written that I might be barred from the office of POTUS.

Anyway, I find the legal issue fascinating and wish the court would address it. However, my suspicion is that the Court is trying to avoid the issue, because bad facts make bad law. Those on the court sympathetic to revisiting US v. Ark (i.e., Alito) in the context of the immigration of Jose Gonzalez, might not want to do so in the context of potentially disqualifying a President with a 68% approval rating.

Obama, having been born in Hawaii, is indeed a natural born US citizen. His dual citizenship neither abrogates that fact, nor indicates the possession of dual loyalties. I voted for McCain, but Obama was elected fair and square, he is now my president, too (I will not stoop to the level of the moonbats who denied that Dubya was theirs), and now we have to live through the consequences of the majority's choice.

Even so, the preeminent treatise on international law at the time the Constitution was ratified was Emerich de Vattel's The Law of Nations which states that, "The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country of parents who are citizens." So, the contrary position has legitimate support too. The fact that the Constitutional term "natural born citizen" has never been defined by the Supreme Court means that the issue is a matter of first impression. We just do not know how a court will define that term until they do it. Regardless of the outcome or the ultimate result, the term need to be defined.

United States v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649 (1898): In this case, the majority of the Court held that a child born in U.S. territory to parents who were subjects of the emperor of China but who had “a permanent domicile and residence in the United States, and are there carrying on business, and are not employed in any diplomatic or official capacity under the emperor of China” was a U.S. Citizen. The Court stated that: "The constitution nowhere defines the meaning of these words [citizen and natural born citizen], either by way of inclusion or of exclusion, except in so far as this is done by the affirmative declaration that 'all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.'" [15] Since there was no definition found in the constitution, the majority adopted the common law of England that was a carry over from feudal times. Perkins v. Elg, 307 U.S. 325 (1939): The U.S. Supreme Court concluded that Marie Elizabeth Elg, who was born in the United States of Swedish parents naturalized in the United States, had not lost her birthright U.S. citizenship because of her removal during minority to Sweden and was entitled to all the rights and privileges of that U.S. citizenship. In this case, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the decree that declared Elg "to be a natural born citizen of the United States."

Schneider v. Rusk, 377 U.S. 163 (1964): The Court voided a statute that provided that a naturalized citizen should lose his United States citizenship if, following naturalization, he resided continuously for three years in his former homeland. "We start from the premise that the rights of citizenship of the native-born and of the naturalized person are of the same dignity and are coextensive. The only difference drawn by the Constitution is that only the 'natural born' citizen is eligible to be President."

I see that you have read that wiki article on Natural Born Citizen that I have been slowly trying to bring balance to. If you note, US v. Kim Wong Ark dealt with citizenship. Perkins v. Elg dealt with citizenship. Schneider v. Rusk dealt with citizenship. All the other cases dealt with citizenship. And those cases are not all in accord (See, Elk v. Wilkins). Those cases mostly discuss the 14th Amendment and turn on the phrase "and subject to the jurisdiction of..." No case that I know of has ever been decided that dealt directly with the constitutional requirement for POTUS (other than off handed dicta in citizenship cases that has no precedential value in a Presidential qualification test). The 14th Amendment merely says "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States..." It only uses the term "citizen." It does not use the term "natural born citizen" -- that phrase was only used in the Constitution to describe the qualifications for President (and Vice President).

You see, there is a valid undecided legal argument that "natural born citizen" is a legal term of art inserted into the Constitution which means something other than just a citizen by birth. I would agree that the weight of the authority in the US adopts the jus soli theory of citizenship over the jus sanguinis theory in citizenship cases in determining the meaning of "citizen" in the Constitution. There are those who would like to roll back that definition to exclude those born in the US while their parents were illegally within the borders of the US by arguing those here illegally were not subject to the jurisdiction of the US in the context that that phrase was used in the 14th Amendment. That dispute only concerns the term "citizen". If "natural born citizen" merely means a "citizen" at birth, then to decide one is to decide the other, but if "natural born citizen" is a term of art, then the 14th Amendment cases may be instructive, but not determinative in a Presidential qualification test.

In summary, even the term "citizen" may still be an open legal question and the term "natural born citizen" in the context of Presidential qualifications is a question of first impression that has never been decided. The "nirthers" would probably lose this argument, but the argument has legal merit and should not be mocked until it is decided. I am not debating anyone - just pointing out that there is a legitimate issue to be decided by the courts. No case has defined the Constitutional term "natural born citizen" because that term only appears in the Constitution as a qualification for President or Vice President. Since no case has defined that term in the context of a qualification challenge, there is no controlling precedent. Those other cases may have discussed the term "natural born citizen" as part of their published opinion, but that portion of the opinion would only be dicta - potentially persuasive, but not controlling.
