From the posting:
Everyone who has been in the military, especially to Iraq or Afghanistan, within the last few years needs to watch the first part of this video. Look at the "military equipment" CBS is pushing as recently stolen or "looted" from US Forces. You will notice that it's equipment we aren't even issued. Also, they blatantly lie when attempting to show night vision equipment, which isn't night vision equipment at all.
00:02 the video shows some a series of boots. Out of the three pair, two are black leather boots. When is the last time any of us deployed with black leather boots? Hell in the Marine Corps they aren't even issued; you can't wear them. The military isn't shipping black boots to Afghanistan. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, the tan boots are brand new, and are not even US issued for either the Marines or the US Army. Finally, in the frame you will see the tri-color camouflage shirt, brand new. The Marine Corps and most Army units don't issue this camouflage print any longer. Digital print is the standard. There are a few units that still have them but most don't'. CBS hasn't done their homework.
00:05 the narrator states "even high power binoculars," as footage of some man in a hadji dress picks up a pair of cheap looking binos. I can't believe CBS fell for this, or just ignored the reality. The various assortment of military issued binoculars don't look like this. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.
00:07 the narrator continues, "...and sophisticated night vision gear." Can someone please tell me what the camera is looking at. It looks like a couple rifle magazines at the bottom, and various black and grey bags, possibly protective containers for Oakley or other issued eye wear. I don't see any night vision equipment or anything that remotely resembles night vision equipment. I'm not saying it wasn't there, NVGs and NODs can be found all over, but the video is supposedly, according to the narrator, showing night vision devices.
00:09 does show US Army knee pads and hydration pack. At least that is what the camouflage pattern looks like. When you look at the video angle this footage does not show a market place setting typical to what is found in Pakistan or Afghanistan.
00:11 shows knives, none of which are us issued to US forces.
00:18 shows a distance shot of some camouflage shirts, none are US military print.
00:20 Does show a case that says "Property of US government." If someone knows what kinda case this is please let me know.
00:21 shows the old olive drab canteen and canteen cover. This is an older issued item, although to be fair it could still be issued to some units. However, the carrying case for the canteen would most likely have been changed. For example, the Marine Corps issues the old canteen but the covers are newer camo print, not the old olive drab.
00:24 the narrator says that "we are told there are US weapons for sale here to." Of course she shows none.
If you have trouble, keep reloading the page; it took me about 5 tries

This video is suspect to say the least. I'm not saying it's fake, but CBS didn't show what they said they were showing. At best they were fooled and at worst they were disingenuous. It was a complete scam with regards to the American equipment footage. The only thing she showed was a knee pad, hydration system and an old canteen. The rest was just equipment you find find anywhere.
I'd bet on disingenuous...

pilferage is a real problem. go to any pawn shop near a major military base and you'll find standard equipment for sale. so i'd be very surprised if at least that wasn't happening in pakistan.
but the story just so perfectly illustrates the problem of letting a journalism major, with no experience of being other than a journalist, cover the war.

Most of the Obama coins which use a Presidential Dollar for the host coin are colorized through the application of a decal, which is permanently fused to the coin's surface using a hot glue process. In doing so, these marketers are wiping out the faces of our nation's Founding Fathers and placing their garish colorized designs on our U.S. legal tender coinage. The result is a coin that is numismatically worthless; in other words, these colorized Obama coins will never have any value to coin collectors as collectible Presidential Dollars because the original surfaces of the coins have been destroyed by the colorization process.

To put in a good word for CBS's Central Asia coverage: they did run a good piece, on 60 Minutes last Sunday, on the problems in Pakistan's frontier province.
But they weren't showing recently unburied treasure. They were showing interviews, and live footage of the front. This hoax has just undercut everything good they said this week.
CBS needs to learn that when their story relies on a "recently discovered evidence zOMFG!1" which is conveniently served up to them by a rabid partisan, it's not as effective. They ALSO need to learn that when they have a story at 6 PM and bullshit at 7, the stench of the latter spreads to the former.

Where do these fools come from... ?
Most journalists have no actual knowledge of the military but they do have an overwhelming desire to print anti-military stories. Consider this classic:
NYT caption: Pakistani men with the remains of a missile
When it was pointed out the intact object in the picture was not a missile, let alone the "remains" of an exploded missile, AFP ran a correction:
Correction: A picture caption on Saturday with an article about a U.S. airstrike on a village in Pakistan misidentified an unexploded ordinance. It was not the remains of a missile fired at a house.
They also spelled "ordnance" wrong. Oh, well… that's not all that was wrong. The photo wasn't even of a village in Pakistan, it was from Afghanistan, and the decades old artillery shell was Russian, not American.
74 | Rexatosis Tue, Feb 17, 2009 9:21:57am |
Hey, don't be too hard on CBS, it's the Bush economy, they had to let all the American fact checkers go and just took the word of the Pakistani merchants who would never lie to a paying customer unlike evil American Corporations.///////

The Can't Be Straight with military stories network strikes again.
What is interesting is they imply any surge in troops will result in more pilferage and therefore more instability, even though an Afgan surge is one of the most tangible security objectives their golden child has supported. Hmmm, perhaps this is a confirmation of rumors that the current admin now wants to back out of Afgan and the media will now help by providing convenient excuses.

LOL, no it was a truck the army used in Vietnam, but then that brings back the memories of this thing.
M-561 6x6 Gama Goat 1 1/4-ton Truck
The M-561 Gama Goat (or Gamma Goat as it is also spelled) was described as the Truck, Cargo, Articulated, 1 1/4 ton, 6x6, M561 with or without winch, NSN 2320-00-873-5407. It was manufactured during the late 1960's and early 1970's by the Consolidated Diesel Electric Company, as shown on the dataplate below. It was named for Roger Gamaunt who invented the key part, the articulated power joint between the tractor cab and cargo body trailer, plus "goat" for its high mobility capabilities. The Truck, Ambulance, M792 was the only variant of the Gama Goat.

Hey, some of that looks neat! Can I use my CBS cub reporter card to pick some up at the local Kinkos?
ps when I print up a CBS cub reporter card, do I have to misspell reporter or use a crayon for my picture?
Use the finger paints...:)

Ya, I think it was sold in a market in some remote Afghan village. At least CBS said so.
I love them old shows, Hogan's Heroes, Rat Patrol, COMBAT!, My Friend the Martian (I think it was).
My Favorite Martian.
Looking back on it, that was a dumb show.

re: #104 markie
All that stuff really does look like the kind of stuff you see at gunshows or army-navy stores...copies and imitations, cheap knives and webgear. I don't blame CBS too much. It takes a lot of familiarity to know if its real, or a military expert to advise you..
They must have some subject matter expert on retainer who could spend 5 minutes pointing out the obvious discrepancies, and what they show in no way supports their hypothetical claim. They certainly wasted plenty of money producing a useless story that will now be used as club to bash their already badly bruised reputation. They must have a high level of confidence the democrats will be bailing them out in some manner.

Dusty did you ever get to Tan An or Binh Phuoc? Spent most of my time there, my brother's battalion was on the barrack ship Benewah, I can't remember where your outfit was, but vaguely remember them at Bearcat when the Division first got overseas.

They where at Bearcat till about January 1968, then they moved the whole division to Dong Tam, Have you looked at the 9th Division Web site?
THE "Old Reliables" Song
TRY HARDER
WE ARE THE OLD RELIABLES, WE'RE GONNA TELL YOU WHY,
WE ARE THE OLD RELIABLES, WE SHOUT IT TO THE SKY,
WE GAINED OUR FAME
AND MADE OUR NAME
ON EVERY FOREIGN SHORE,
WE ARE THE OLD RELIABLES, AND WE WILL BE BACK FOR MORE
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE!
WE ARE THE OLD RELIABLES WE STARTED WAY BACK WHEN.
THE YEAR WAS 1918 AND WE STARTED TRAINING MEN,
TO BE THE BEST
AND MEET THE TEST
WHATEVER IT MAY BE.
WAVE FOUGHT ON RIGHT AND FREEDOM'S SIDE THROUGH ALL OUR
HISTORY.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE
OUR FIRST TRUE TEST HAD COME ABOUT IN 1942.
WE STARTED WITH A DESERT WAR, BUT AFTER WE WERE THROUGH,
WE'D CROSSED THE RHINE
IN RECORD TIME
RAMAGEN BRIDGE WAS WON
WE ALL WENT HOME AND FOR AWHILE WE HUNG UP SWORD AND
GUN
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON.
THE YEARS HAD PASSED AND ONCE AGAIN THE VOICE OF DUTY
CALLED.
WE STRIVED FOR COMBAT READINESS SO WE WOULD NEVER FALL.
THEN HAIL AGAIN
TO GERMANY
TO BOLSTER OUR ALLY.
TO JOIN WITHIN THE NATO SHIELD, AND THIS WAS STILL OUR CRY,
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE!
THEY CALLED US FROM THE ROCKIES TO OPEN THE MIDDLE WEST.
FORT RILEY MADE US READY FOR ANOTHER GRUELING TEST
WE LEFT AGAIN
NOT KNOWING WHEN
WE'D SEE OUR HOME ONCE MORE.
WE HIT THE BEACH AT PORT VUNG TAU, TO FIGHT A DELTA WAR.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE.
AT BEARCAT WE BEGAN TO FIGHT AND WE WERE DOING WELL.
AND THEN WE MOVED TO DONG TAM AND KEPT GIVING "CHARLIE"
HELL.
WITH MINI GUNS
AND TANGO BOATS
AND CONCENTRATED STEEL.
WE HOUNDED "CHARLIE" DAY AND NIGHT AND THEN WE MADE HIM
KNEEL.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON,
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE!
WE EARNED AWARDS FOR VALOR IN THE MUDDY DELTA LAND.
AND WHEN THE GENERAL PINNED THEM ON, THE 9TH DIVISION BAND,
PLAYED TRUMPET CALLS
AND ANTHEMS AND
A ROUSING MARCH OR TWO
TO BOLSTER THE ESPRIT D'CORPS AND SEE OUR SOLDIERS
THROUGH.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, THE VICTORY IS WON,
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE!
WE HAVE A GROUP OF DOLLIES TO MAINTAIN OUR MORALE.
TRY HARDER, TRY HARDER, BECAUSE YOU'RE NUMBER ONE!

I looked at this video - it looked like some really poorly supplied flea-market crap. A few very old pieces of issued TA-50 and we're supposed to be outraged?
This is the same media that constantly tries to keep us from pursuing these terrorists. I remember the universal cheers when Bush claimed that we would go anywhere to get these people - apparently areas of Pakistan don't qualify.
With the recent decision (surrender) of the Pakistan government to give near autonomy to the tribal areas, someone else (go figure as to who) must move in to these areas to clean them out. Otherwise we truly have a Vietnam-like situation where areas supporting the enemy are kept 'off-limits' to our military.

Yes, I've visited that website. Damn, I remember that song, I've never seen the lyrics before. I remember a civilian group came to FT. Riley and started singing that song( well, not exactly that one, but something like "The Mighty 9th Infantry"with cadences) the day the Division got its colors on Custer Hill. Thousands of troops went nuts, really pumped , made them sing it about 4 or 5 times over.
My brother's unit, 4/47 has a good website, the sound clips are a bit spooky.
9th I.D. 4/47 Inf.
I was asking about Tan an cause I remember that big temple by the highway, looked at modern Viet websites to see if it's still there. Can't find it, but found that Dong Tam is now a snake farm, was a NVA tilll recently.

Viet Gov't site on Dong Tam snake farm
Dong Tam also has a collection of mutant turtles and fish on display. The cause of their genetic deformities is almost certainly the spraying of Agent Orange during the American War, which was particularly intensive in the forested parts of the Mekong Delta. The snake farm is operated by the Vietnamese military for profit and is open to the public. The restaurant here includes cobra on the menu and there's a shop where you can stock up on cobra antivenin.

It's just like CNN's stupid old "Operation Tailwind" scandal starring "Baghdad Peter" Arnett.
Or, of course, beloved CBS and the phony memos.
How could they believe allegations so outrageous without some really solid proof to back them up?
Because they WANTED to believe!
Yes it makes the duped journalists look dumb in the short term.
But in the long term, it adds to a constantly building mass of negative stories about America that, even though they're almost ALL bogus, still create a vague and building negative feeling in an inattentive American public (and an already hostile foreign public) that keeps building even after these stupid fabrications are debunked.
This crap is not disseminated without harm.
After Newsweek's phony story about Koran flushing at Gitmo, people actually died in rioting.
And, after the endless, false, stream of anti-American sewage coming through the media about Iraq, Washington, and American society, LOOK WHAT WE DID TO OURSELVES IN NOVEMBER OF 2008!
The price of this malign malfeasance is still being paid and it will be dear.

154 | Render Tue, Feb 17, 2009 1:52:28pm |
VoW is quite correct. CBS stepped in it again. Nothing they showed in that video is standard US military issue, except for the brief clips of actual US soldiers, in actual US bases.
What we're seeing here is CBS refusing to go into the actual Pakistani arms bazaars.
They didn't go into Darra Adam Khel, where one can buy cheap hand made copies of almost any gun made...
Including copies of the M-16 series, the Steyr AUG series, modified Mini-14's, Mossberg and Remington shotguns, WW1 German Luger's, and anything of Russian design. Almost none of it was really made by the original companies, not even the Lee-Enfield knock-offs.
China makes it's own reverse engineered copy of the M-16. So does Iran.
Not only is this CBS story bogus, but it covers up the truth about the Pakistani illegal arms markets and who is currently in control of Darra Adam Khel.
But we already knew that when we saw the CBS logo.

Yeah, there is a lot of BS about what is US equipment in that clip. This yet again shows the laziness and bias of CBS. Actual military hardware such as weapons, munnition, nightvision, CBRN equipment or anything else that is a controlled item is not given to TCNs to be convoyed into Afghanistan on jingle trucks. The shame of it all is this sloppy reporting undercuts a very valid point. We have been denied Manas air base and the land route from Pakistan IS very dangerous, believe me many of the trucks show up with bullet holes in them. Things have gotten to the point where supply is starting to become a problem for the 30K US troops here and I doubt they have fully planned out the logistical problems of doubling that number.
