You’ve heard a lot about the astonishing spending in the $787 billion economic stimulus bill, signed into law this week by President Barack Obama. But you probably haven’t heard about a provision in the bill that threatens to politicize the way allegations of fraud and corruption are investigated — or not investigated — throughout the federal government.
The provision, which attracted virtually no attention in the debate over the 1,073-page stimulus bill, creates something called the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board — the RAT Board, as it’s known by the few insiders who are aware of it. The board would oversee the in-house watchdogs, known as inspectors general, whose job is to independently investigate allegations of wrongdoing at various federal agencies, without fear of interference by political appointees or the White House.In the name of accountability and transparency, Congress has given the RAT Board the authority to ask “that an inspector general conduct or refrain from conducting an audit or investigation.” If the inspector general doesn’t want to follow the wishes of the RAT Board, he’ll have to write a report explaining his decision to the board, as well as to the head of his agency (from whom he is supposedly independent) and to Congress. In the end, a determined inspector general can probably get his way, but only after jumping through bureaucratic hoops that will inevitably make him hesitate to go forward.

WASHINGTON -- The number of unemployed workers receiving unemployment benefits jumped to an all-time high near 5 million earlier this month, while new jobless claims remain well above 600,000. Both figures were worse than expected and new projections from the Federal Reserve show unemployment rising for the rest of this year.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of people receiving regular unemployment benefits edged up to 4.99 million, marking the fourth straight week those receiving benefits have been at a record level.
The continuing claims figure underscores the difficulty people are having in this recession finding another job, which means they are forced to receive benefits for a longer period.
An additional 1.5 million people are receiving benefits under an extended unemployment compensation program approved by Congress last year, bringing the total number of people receiving unemployment benefits to 6.54 million for the week ending Feb. 7.

The Carter Center has monitored more than 50 troubled democratic elections, all of them either highly contentious or a nation's first experience with democracy. We are familiar with potential fraudulent techniques and how to obtain a close approximation to the actual results to assure accuracy.
One of our prerequisites for involvement is to be invited by all major political parties and by the central election commission, so it is necessary for us to remain absolutely neutral. These criteria obviously apply to Venezuela.

When Jimmy Carter went to Cuba in 2002, Fidel Castro reveled in the photo-ops with a former U.S. president. Mr. Carter seemed to think he was heroically "engaging" the Cuban despot. But in the documentary "Dissident," celluloid captures something most Americans didn't see: Castro giggling sardonically as Mr. Carter lectures the Cuban politburo on democracy. That foreshadowed what happened when the media splash ended and the former president went home: Dissidents he went to "help" today languish in gulag punishment cells.
I was reminded this week of how Castro so artfully used Mr. Carter when Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez took a page from his Cuban mentor's playbook. On Monday, the Carter Center along with the head of the monumentally meaningless Organization of American States, Cesar Gaviria, endorsed Chávez's claims of victory in the Venezuelan recall referendum, rather too hastily it now seems.
The problem was that the "observers" hadn't actually observed the election results. Messrs. Carter and Gaviria were only allowed to make a "quick count"--that is, look at the tally sheets spat out by a sample of voting machines. They were not allowed to check this against ballots the machines issued to voters as confirmation that their votes were properly registered.
If there was fraud, as many Venezuelans now suspect, it could have been discovered if the ballots didn't match the computer tallies. The tallies alone were meaningless. The problem was clear by Tuesday but it didn't stop the State Department spokesman Adam Ereli from chiming in. "The people of Venezuela have spoken," he proclaimed.

Some things I can stockpile before hyperinflation sets in -- dry stuff like beans, rice, and flour, some canned things it's currently cheaper to buy than to grow -- but a garden is going to become very important soon, I'm afraid.

I went with a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) we bought a half share and it was alot. So we canned and pickled a few things. Wife grinds and bakes her own bread which we figured was about 50 cents a loaf after all said and done with, less labor cost of coarse. I was impressed how good it was to have real wheat bread. A few years back a guy held up a grocery store very close to the location of this incident. The perp in question took a shot at a store clerk who followed him out of the store. A few blocks later cops cop up with the perp. By this time the perp and shoved the gun in a pocket and was displaying a knife. He was surrounded by police in short order, refusing orders to drop the knife. When he lunged (well withing the 21ft circle) at an officer the officer fired a single round killing the perp.
Jameison was apoplectic at the excessive use of force. Especially since the perp was a know druggie and the cops should have been more sensitive and he was a minority (the same minority as Jameison).

I'm not sure what you mean? Back in the fall, when the price per barrel was running up SO fast, anything prices that could be connected to the price of oil when skyrocketing up just as fast. It didn't take months or anything to "trickle" down, price wise. And then, around about the beginning of Dec. 2008, the price started to fall, fall, fall, and now it is below 35 dollars a barrel (I believe that's a futures buy).
Yet, the price of food, which flew up along with other items, is still going up, up, up. And I am not talking about a penny here and a penny there (and I'm not talking seasonal items). I talking about increases in the 25-35 percent range since Dec.
I'm basically poor (but ok right now), so, I pay very close attention to the "little" things. We are getting fucked.

I prefer a remington 870 or Winchester 1300. The Winchesters are no longer made, but you can pick up police trade-ins for a couple of hundred dollars at gun shows. It is a solid working gun, and good enough for most anything you want to do.
If you can go high-dollar, you can go with a Wilson Combat gun. I'm building my own right now, and have Wilson Combat ghost-ring sights on backorder. You could go that route if you know what you like. I'm doing a mossberg breacher barrel, extended mag, ghost-rings, ceracoat finish, and Houge stocks. I didn't save much over just buying the Wilson, but I got pretty much exactly what I want.
Any way you go, you'll beat Bennelli on price. Bennellis are good guns, but they are too high-dollar for my taste. A shotgun isn't a sniper rifle, and no amount of custom work is going to make it a sniper rifle.
My $0.02.

I'm not familiar with CSAs ... are you in a city or something? But I'm like your wife -- I can grind my own flour, cornmeal, and meat if I have to. Also have a dehydrator for stuff that dries well. Canning, yes, that's a given -- I plan to start doing a bunch of stews as meats go on sale.
When (or if) it gets really bad, we live on a farm, and if the deer start going after crops, I'm sure the owner/neighbor/landlord will want help protecting his crops. That'll be a good addition to the protein supply.

But the wife (she won't let me shop for food, she claims that I'm too cheap. I'm not cheap, I'm thrifty) has been wifeing for a couple of years that the cost of foodstuffs is going up way more than stated inflation.
We've helped some by buying flour, sugar, cooking oil, rice, beans and the like in bulk quantities. But storage is an issue.

Well, the DOW closed down, jobless claims are up, crude is creeping up slowly thanks to OPEC, and wholesale inflation is up. Essentially the market is reacting to Obama's failed policies. Since everything is going down the toilet that must be what motivated Carter to approve of His policies.
The EPA is about to rule on carbon dioxide which will have a huge negative impact on the economy. This will result in greater market loses. Food and fuel prices will climb regardless of any predicted market turn around. California is increasing taxes which will also have a ripple effect across the country if you consider their produce production, wine, etc. Other states will follow as Federal mandates increase exponentially.
Changes in unemployment rules will also increase the official unemployment roles. This includes rules that provide incentives to states for allowing people to collect UI after quiting "for compelling family reasons" as well as allowing UI for part-time workers.
Things aren't looking very good for our future so Jimmy Carter can only gladly approve.

Speaking of money I found this interesting. If the Senators and Governors can't pay their taxes and make sense of it, its time to revise it with a flat tax. I sent this to my State Senators. Haven't heard a word yet.
I also heard the IRS is just making up interpertations and just waiting to see if the people balk or not. Several friends got audited and turns out the "Agents" were just estimating what they thought was the appropriate tax. They folded once the attorney pointed out their error.

Wow. Even the most trivial "throw-away" posts that I make on zomblog end up having some significance.
Last, time, I posted a photo of a "dogs for Obama" poster called "Bark for Barack," just for laughs. Turned out the poster was based on a famous Soviet propaganda poster and was widely linked and discussed during the election as evidence of the socialist Obama cult.
Well, it happened again. I just posted a thread called "The Graveyard of Zombietime Flops," thinking nothing about it is remarkable in any way, especially my lame Photoshop parody of Mearsheimer & Walt's book "The Israel Lobby" -- but it elicited a fascinating observation from commenter "gegenkritik" in which he notes that the German edition of "The Israel Lobby" is based on a Nazi-era book cover design! (You can see all the covers at the end of the post, in a new update.)
News is everywhere. And the MSM utterly fails to find it.

If Iowa were no longer allowed to hold the earliest caucus, politicians wouldn't feel the need to pander to the ethanol lobby. Anyone who thinks it's a good idea to burn food for fuel is an idiot (or a corn farmer).
The thing is, even if the type of corn used for fuel is different than food corn (which it is), it is still not a good way to produce ethanol! Extreme water and land consuming process, then the energy put INTO the corn to turn it into ethanol (not to mention the Carbon Dioxide released into the atmosphere), then the fact that ethanol doesn't have as much energy per kilogram as does gasoline, counts for a losing proposition.
All it does is drive up costs of fuel and food at the same time.
There are much better methods of producing ethanol, such as beets or sugar cane. I read about prairie grass, even has a much more efficient output of ethanol than corn.

Well, the price is below 35 dollars a barrel, and the price has gone up over the last few months.
And food keeps going up. Remember back in the fall they said food prices were going up BECAUSE of transportation cost.
Me thinks they are fucking with us.
Me thinks there is mucho collusion between Big Oil and the Federal government. Oil needs its revenue and Feds need their cut of the gas tax pie. If Bush was still in office, all you'd be hearing today is the MSM screaming about rising gas prices amidst falling oil prices. The silence on this issue today pretty much cements my suspicions.

Gas could be purchased on certain days only, to handle the shortage. They'd put a sign on a car in line "Last car. No Gas after this" and the rest of the line would break away. I had a pass to buy on my off days, because I was medical personnel.

When I was a cadet at Airborne School, I cajoled as many good NCOs as I could into telling me what they liked and disliked in a platoon leader. When I became that signal platoon leader, I told my NCO's, "it's my platoon and I expect you to run it properly." They appreciated that. Sometime I'll tell my 3 Bears/Lieutenants story. It's funny.

I also heard the IRS is just making up interpertations and just waiting to see if the people balk or not. Several friends got audited and turns out the "Agents" were just estimating what they thought was the appropriate tax. They folded once the attorney pointed out their error.
I got a notice regarding some back taxes we owe. Their proposed monthly payment was more than our combined take-home pay (and that was before my husband got laid off). They just throw it against the wall and see what sticks.

My mistake, I did see an article outlining the different types of corn, I just misremembered (word for ya ;) ) parts of it. As to the cellulositic ethanol, I agree it is not practical for production yet its force fed into our gas tanks right now (what is it, 10% of gasoline now?).
There are better ways of producing ethanol that I'm on an internet connection too slow to really look it up and post (sorry :( ).

I have taken to answering them and telling who ever I speak to, using my wonderful Jamaican accent, that Obama is going to give me a credit card, or lower interest rates, or free cable TV.
It's a hoot. And I keep it up as long as the caller wants to try to sell me.
The last call like that, that I got, I asked the guy to loan me some money. Dead silence & then a click.

Gosh, I'm old enough to remember Carter-- gasoline rationing, miles-long lines of cars waiting for gasoline, signs in gas stations reading "no gas", and stagflation.

Hah! I've taken to putting a long rambling message intro; they usually hang up before it gets to the end. It also helps when screening calls cause it gives me time to get to the phone for the ID number. When I come home I see so many 800 number hangups it gives me a good laugh. Wish I'd done this long ago.

NYU is one of the largest property owners in NYC. They pay no taxes. They're enormously wealthy. They're extremely left-wing. These schools are a great argument for repealing the tax exempt status enjoyed by universities and foundations. Given that foundations founded by conservatives like the Ford family were long-ago subsumed by the left, they should be forced to spend their money and get out of business within twenty-five years instead of doing perpetual social damage through their left-wing agenda.
And yes. I support applying the same rules to right-wing foundations for the same reason.

My mistake, I did see an article outlining the different types of corn, I just misremembered (word for ya ;) ) parts of it. As to the cellulositic ethanol, I agree it is not practical for production yet its force fed into our gas tanks right now (what is it, 10% of gasoline now?).
There are better ways of producing ethanol that I'm on an internet connection too slow to really look it up and post (sorry :( ).
One of the solutions the USAF is looking into is growing algae to produce ethanol, though they haven't arrived at a cost effective method yet.
It would be better than corn-based ethanol if it becomes cost effective, because it could be done in the desert instead of using up arable land.

These historical inflation "calculations" were done by the Carter administration themselves and didn't include energy costs. Inflation in 1978-79 was around 18%, I recall very clearly having a 24% car loan and a 26% credit card.
On a more ominous note inflation figures for January 09 were .8% instead of the .2% that was expected. .8% translates to 9.6% annually, or double that of the Bush administration. Stay tuned.

Lebanon's Palestinian camps a 'time bomb': ICG
Lebanon's 12 Palestinian refugee camps are breeding grounds for extremist groups and constitute a "time bomb" that needs urgent attention, the International Crisis Group think-tank said Thursday.

Fort Chaffee no place for Gitmo prisoners
The fear for states and municipalities is that when the terrorist prison at Guantanamo is closed, the inmates will be incarcerated somewhere in the states. Fort Smith Director Dr. Cole Goodman says he put forth the resolution because of past history at Fort Chaffee. The Arkansas National Guard base was once an active army base and held thousands of German POW's during World War II. In 1980 the fort housed Cuban refugees who incited riots and made many River Valley residents afraid.
Director Goodman says the city doesn't want to go through that again. He told 5NEWS that Fort Smith doesn't want to be the last one making a statement about this; they want to be one of the first on record.
I understand that they weren't the first; that OK was first to say, "Nah."

In the early 1970s, the United States found itself vexed by a newly powerful cartel of foreign oil producers, a 300 percent rise in crude prices and a new and unpleasant realization that Americans were no longer the sole masters of their own economic house. Rather than reining in its own politically driven monetary policies to slow the surge in consumer prices accompanying the oil shock, the Nixon-era Federal Reserve hit on the novel strategy of trying to cover it up instead. The traditional "headline" inflation rate, measuring the rise or fall of an average of all prices for a broad basket of goods and services, was nudged aside in favor of an index that stripped out the supposedly more volatile categories of food (subject to price spikes due to weather or plague) and energy (subject to price spikes due to unfriendly foreigners). Consumers may still have felt pain at the gas station and grocery store, but the government would no longer officially confirm their discomfort.

These historical inflation "calculations" were done by the Carter administration themselves and didn't include energy costs. Inflation in 1978-79 was around 18%, I recall very clearly having a 24% car loan and a 26% credit card.
On a more ominous note inflation figures for January 09 were .8% instead of the .2% that was expected. .8% translates to 9.6% annually, or double that of the Bush administration. Stay tuned.
Home mortages in Oklahoma at that time were in the range of 20-25%.

'Selective' may be less harsh. The only true inflation figures that matter to the individual consumer are those that measure the rise (or fall. don't laugh, it's happened before. happened for twenty years after the Civil War) in prices on those items that you purchase, especially those purchases made on an ongoing basis.

Have hope; we are a very ingenious "race" we americans. Somehow we will weather this scam artist as we've weathered others as dangerous and stupid. Clinton comes to mind. Folks don't understand he got in at an opportune time; ussr = gone, threats = minimal (on the surface), economy chugging along (the reps saved him from himself) and money in the bank because of lessened military expenditure (because reagan and bush built it all back up for him to waste). He was smart enough to just step back and leave things alone after the first 2 years. Of course his 'idleness' lead to other blunders. Have hope; we are a very ingenious "race" we americans. Somehow we will weather this scam artist as we've weathered others as dangerous and stupid. Clinton comes to mind. My parents in 1975 used 'mortgage assumption' to buy a house, taking over an existing mortgage while making an additional and sizable payment to the current mortgage holder.
Unfortunately, most mortgages today contain a due on sale clause and/or an acceleration clause that makes assumption impossible. If lenders eliminated those clauses on existing loans, some people who are currently underwater might be able to find buyers who would assume the loan. There's no equity anyway, so it would just be taking over payments. Obviously this would only work with fixed rate loans, but even if it's one of those outlandish ARMs, a qualified buyer could refinance. The seller avoids foreclosure, the bank gets money, someone gets a house.

Now bear with me here as I think this through. 1) Pakistan may end cooperation with the US to mollify its Al Queda supporters as well as Al Queda itself. 2) These photos are going to make it harder to keep Pakistan cooperating with us. 3) The people who own Google are the biggest Obama supports in the world and .. 4) The people who own Google would never do anything that Obama doesn't want them to do.

At the time I motivated by "environmental" issues. Now I'm motivated by almost the opposite: regulations, the Nanny state, spending, taxes, etc. Basically the opposite of Carter.

I had a friend in school that took care of a monkey from the zoo from time to time and she would never let it out of the big cage in the basement. She used to tell me how dangerous they could be. The basement smelled like rank shit too. I wonder what the CT womans house smelled like. Chimpanzees certainly have their very own funk if not constantly washed and groomed.

There is a difference between the spot prices and the forward contracts. The forward contracts have been over 40 now for a while. Anybody that does anything using oil except raw speculation will hedge out into the future to some extent. Oil for the near month went up about 9% today. Plus you also run into the crack spread problem. We export diesel (basically fuel oil for all practical purposes) to Europe and import gasoline from them. Brent has come loose from West Texas Intermediate (WTI) now for the past several months and WTI has gone down a lot more than Brent has. The gasoline imported from Europe will have Brent as its feedstock and so cost more to produce. You can fine tune the output of your crackers to some extent, but you still wind up producing some heavy products no matter what. The normal crude has some fairly long molecules in it. The ratio of hydrogen to carbon is lower than that in gasoline. You can push the hydrogen around to make benzene, heptane, octane, etc. but you produce carbon in the process. Fuel oil is one place that they park the carbon. The extreme case is asphalt and oil coke. Oil coke is damn near straight carbon and is used for some power plants near the refineries. Life ain't so simple as the spot and current month WTI prices would suggest.

Google earth had nothing to do with it on purpose. Someone probably just started looking at the images near where the drones were mentioned to be last March. The base was located by tracing fuel shipments. It was no secret to anyone in the area, but Pakistan just pretended they did not know. Here's the report from the Pakistani

Google earth had nothing to do with it on purpose. Someone probably just started looking at the images near where the drones were mentioned to be last March. The base was located by tracing fuel shipments. It was no secret to anyone in the area, but Pakistan just pretended they did not know. Here's the report from the Pakistani
press..

Uh...that was classified information that D. Feinstein blabbed about. Not the first time a pol Dem 'leaked' classified info that made its way into MSM. Leahy and Rockefeller come to mind in the not so distant past.
Nothing to be proud of, I assure you. In a different world, it's called treason, especially considering her position as Chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Quick ammo report. the Girlfriend and I went to dinner at a hibachi steakhouse. MMMMMmmmmmm! Afterword, we stopped by Wally World on the neverending quest for ammunition. They had exactly one box of .357. No .45, 9mm. They had .40 S&W in quantity, and that was about it. A couple of boxes of less popular or widespread use (7mm-08, .243 Win. and things like that), and that was it. The dude at the counter said they didn't know when they would get more. All of their distributors were sold out.
I don't expect this to change in the near-term future. Maybe after the 2010 elections (assuming that the Democrats don't go for broke and try to outlaw everything).
