Solid Gold! This guy should be Commander in Chief.

Solid Gold! This guy should be Commander in Chief.

Never mind that. I think he should give the Commander in Chief a motivational speech.

6 HelloDare  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:02:08pm

If only he were Speaker of the House.

7 rwmofo  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:04:28pm

Does any one know what rank this guy is?

8 ilzito guacamolito  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:05:04pm

extremely sorry for the early OT, but I'm signing out, and this is important

All: LudwigVanQuixote just posted the latest, slimmed-down, version of his evolution troll hammer. Links below go to the two parts, on the Missouri Creationist Bill thread.

11 Racer X  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:06:21pm

I think he speaks for a lot of us. "Man up or we're outta here."

12 pre-Boomer Marine brat  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:06:32pm

That's a great job the GI does!
I hope to hell the Iraqis got the message.

13 gman  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:07:10pm

Hooah! Nothing like a motivational lecture courtesy of the US Army!

14 Rev  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:07:46pm

Wonderful! I would love to see some follow-up to this. I hope to all that is holy that he has not been removed. I especially liked the way he dealt with the leaders and the butthole who tried to make all the excuses. If someone can understand the Arabic the guy was shouting, I'd would love to get a transcript of what was said.

15 Amer-I-Can  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:08:37pm

Out FUCKING standing! Lazy Iraqis is an ongoing theme over there. I get quite a few first hand stories like this.

16 Killian Bundy  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:09:27pm

I wonder what the translator is really saying.

/they know it's Obama time . . . for us to be leaving

17 Perplexed  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:09:30pm

Rough language? I saw the video and only wonder if the Iraqi translator was really doing a word for word translation and if he wasn't, I wonder how many of the Iraqis knew enough English to know what was being said to them. Over at defensetech.org several detractors said that the guy's tirade was demeaning to Iraqis. So which one hurts more, getting your legs blown off by an IED or having someone scream nasty things at you? I'll go for having a guy scream at me. You get over that. Legs blown off? You never get over that.

America needs more straight talkers like him.
H*ll, I don't know him from Adam, but he's getting a couple of hundred pushups and dozens of pull-ups from me today just on general principle.

21 gman  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 5:12:54pm

I'm sure Lefties are going to whine about how the soldier is talking to the Iraqis, but then they aren't the ones who are going to protect the Iraqis when the US pulls out.

Your students would become incontinent after the first 30 seconds. I once had an English professor at SMU go off on the class. Several students were at the point of tears. I just grinned as it was considerably less abusive than what I experienced in basic training.

Yeah. He seems to get a bit out of control. Seems, at least.

It's tough to imagine a more dangerous thing to do in Iraq than show up at the police recruitment office. So at least they've taken that difficult step. But "I will not help people who will not help themselves" is an excellent sentiment. Iraq needs to start shouldering its own national load.

So those fellas may have deserved every word.

To be clear: I'm not saying what the soldier says is stupid. I'm saying it's counterproductive for people in Iraq to see it. The average American has been pretty well broken in by R. Exactly. I knew that's what you meant.

And again -- how does that make me wrong?

My point -- and the soldier's point in his speech -- is that some of the police are actually fighting for Muqtada al-Sadr.

You said the interpreter was afraid of the police. I said it wasn't.

But why trying to explain anything to you since you only think in media terms.

re: #92 Cognito

Why -- again -- why are we taping this sort of thing? It's stupid.

To be clear: I'm not saying what the soldier says is stupid. I'm saying it's counterproductive for people in Iraq to see it. The average American has been pretty well broken in by R. Lee Ermey, so we get it. But this won't make sense to Iraqis. They'll just see their police -- who have risked their lives by merely showing up -- getting cursed and called women by an American in full gear.

so what?....if it motivates them then they will ultimately save lives...you miss the whole point and wonder why it's taped...typical...this gut is not out of control but exactly the opposite...who gives a fuck about a tape...perception works both ways

Hello everyone!
Not so good news on drudge
Iran holds enough uranium for bomb

Iran has built up a stockpile of enough enriched uranium for one nuclear bomb, United Nations officials acknowledged on Thursday.

In a development that comes as the Obama administration is drawing up its policy on negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme, UN officials said Iran had produced more nuclear material than previously thought

They said Iran had accumulated more than one tonne of low enriched uranium hexafluoride at a facility in Natanz.

If such a quantity were further enriched it could produce more than 20kg of fissile material – enough for a bomb.

“It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single bomb,” said Peter Zimmerman, a former chief scientist of the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency

They were already under investigation by the military for violating the UCMJ. The Times instead used the photos on the front page to direct anti-war anti-Bush rage against the US and undermined the mission.

The proximate cause of the problems were the soldiers of that unit at Abu Ghraib. The Times sought to maximize the rage by giving it incessant front page coverage.

and it's a damn good thing the NY times reported it that way, right?

as an isolated incident by a few bad apples. and to make it clear that the US Military was full of good soldiers.
then let it go and move on to covering all of the positive things American soldiers were doing....so you know. not to tarnish the US military and create undue hostility towards American soldiers

Salon Sells Out Troops To Boost Subscriptions

Z Bear at the Truth Laid Bear, once a subscriber himself, reports on the latest effort at luring former subscribers back to the fold -- by promising to run hundreds of additional photos of abuse at Abu Ghraib:

"Dear former Salon Premium member,

Three weeks ago, Salon released 18 photos from Abu Ghraib prison that had never been publicly available, along with documentation of the Army's own investigation into the disturbing images. Reaction was swift and strong; some accused us of undermining American interests, while others took us to task for not publishing every image in our possession. Most feedback praised our decision to highlight a scandal that's been largely underreported by the mainstream media.

We're planning to release hundreds more photos taken inside Abu Ghraib. Using information found in a U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) report and other sources, our news team is cataloging each image so we may provide captions that offer critical context. Our goal is to publish newsworthy pictures that haven't been widely seen before, providing the best information that the CID investigation materials could offer."

I haven't said that. I think dressing them down may be very productive.

But don't be so naive, even for a moment, to think Arabs are going to watch other Arabs get reamed by a geared-up American and think, "Well that's darned peppy."

Your #92:

I'm saying it's counterproductive for people in Iraq to see it. The average American has been pretty well broken in by R. Lee Ermey, so we get it. But this won't make sense to Iraqis.

Seems you made an assumption here, I'm not too sure it's correct is all. My reading has led me to believe opinion in Iraq may be very consistent with this among a high percentage of Iraqis. But I could be wrong.

Opinion of Arabs outside of Iraq? Probably a little different, but frankly that may be a good thing or at least a what's new moment.

ot - I find this typical and appalling.
IT’S AS IF ALL THE KATRINA CONCERN WAS JUST POLITICAL FAKERY:

The economic stimulus signed by President Barack Obama will spread billions of dollars across the country to spruce up aging roads and bridges. But there’s not a dime specifically dedicated to fixing leftover damage from Hurricane Katrina.

And there’s no outrage about it.

Democrats who routinely criticized President George W. Bush for not sending more money to the Gulf Coast appear to be giving Obama the benefit of the doubt in his first major spending initiative.

Agree. The Iraqi's our brave, honorable and tough soldier was speaking (ahem) to, were raised in an atmosphere of total terror. The generation prior to these, were as well.

If you sneezed the wrong way, you could get tossed from a building, or have your tongue removed. Plain and simple, they have instilled fear that seems to be part of their genetic system. It's going to take the NEXT generation to make the attempt to overcome.

Do I agree with our soldier, hell yes. He, along with many, many others put their ass on the line, everyday.

What I'd like to know is: After the U.S. guy ask for questions, there is a lengthy interjection by one of the Iraqi policemen. You can't hear the translator putting it into English.

So what is he saying?

Try reading my actual words sometimes. I was talking about Abu Ghraib being a media whorefest, not this tape.

But someone dissed your precious media so you have to mount an pro-forma attack.

This is getting old. You were responding to a comment about how "the media would chatter on and on over this video -they peed themselves over Abu Ghraib - and deflect away from Amedinnerjacket having a potential nuke."

Ergo my comment.

But it's not about how we feel, here. And it's not just about motivating a handful of Iraqi police. It's about discretion. It's about persuading other people to fight on our behalf. "Hearts and minds" is a cliche for a reason.

I see a few Iraq's that at least stepped up to the plate to help their country being dressed down and called liars. Even if a few were bad guy infiltrators, others were lazy or less brave then the US soldier, the "perception" will be a insult to the Iraq in the street if it gets to them.
Appeal to their pride for trying to serve, not insult it on video for not meeting expectations.

"I will not help people who will not help themselves" is an excellent sentiment. Iraq needs to start shouldering its own national load.

So those fellas may have deserved every word.

But for heaven's sake, when will we learn to stop videotaping ourselves and then letting it splash around on the Internet?

Ironically, Iraq was one of the countries where women had the highest education and were an important part of the workforce outside the home.

(Like Iran was during the Shah's rule, when women were encouraged to study & become professionals in the Western sense)

Demeaning to the Iraqi's? The soldier was Fucking (I really don't use that word enough) brilliant by playing to the status of these guys manhood.

Having been a soldier myself and on the receiving end of a critique by a SFC such as this (and that was only over office work...not life or death) and married to a soldier with 20 years of service this isn't unusual. My husband was always brilliant at playing the hard-ass, cuss em out, make them do the same job over and over (such as loading and unloading a conex), but the moment the soldier had a problem or needed something he was all over it. Probably the same with this guy and I'd bet half those Iraqi's (if they are anything like the US soldiers) respect him for it.

I've not worn the boots of the military, which is one of my great regrets. But I have been alongside them, yes. And I promise you that certain important segments of the military are big into perception as mission.

And perception is important, Cog. But in this case, I think it was overridden byy the fact that nothing short of a verbal smackdown would suffice to get those men's attention. Sometimes you need to throw perceptions to the wind and get on the job. Then you need to deal with the blowback, and you are right that there will be some.

NCO Creed

No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as "The Backbone of the Army". I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the Military Service and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety.

Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind -- accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my soldiers. I will strive to remain tactically and technically proficient. I am aware of my role as a Noncommissioned Officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage. I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, Noncommissioned Officers, leaders!

I heard the same kind of speech, usually at halftime, from almost every single winning coach I played organized football for.

Looked and sounded like standard DI/halftime "pep talk" stuff to me...

"WakeTF up! Take the Fing trash to the Fing street! Fing block that Fing linebacker!"

===

Sources that I trust tell me from what they could hear, the translator was repeating word for word, with the exception of the curse words.

One of those sources said he thought it seemed like the translator and the American had practiced the speech before it was filmed, or at least given it before.

===

Cognito: Of course the combat translators are wearing masks. They have what may be the very most dangerous job in Iraq, for them and for their families. Of course they fear potentially disloyal members of the Iraqi security services, such disloyalty is practically a tradition in that region. Lemme know when you start posting under your real name...

Uh-huh...

===

Embarrassing to the US? Not hardly, I'm proud of that man. I'm proud and damn glad that that man is on my side. Men like him are the strength of this nation personified.

Like a blogger friend said, "I'd hire him." In a heartbeat, he doesn't even need a resume, that video alone will more then suffice.

Hey Dusty!

Ya know your NCO creed thing made me think of my last official act as a Commissioned Officer before I got hurt.

We were waiting for the mortar tube to cool before doing the round extraction procedure. Standing around in a little, cold, cluster in the rain on a road.

I took a piss on the gun squad leader's leg. (He was wearing rain pants).

It was funny as hell. We were a close unit. The MSM would never had understood.

ROFLMAO...:)

And what exactly does that have to do with the video that is the subject of the thread? The video you keep trying to use as a bludgeon on anyone that goes "off topic" even in the slightest in your perception.

It made sense to the person I was addressing. Who wasn't, note, you.

Once again. For those apparently unable to read along apace.

We agree on the guy's speech. Where we disagree -- apparently, although it's hard to tell -- is on the indiscretion of taping the speech, and then watching it zing around the internet.

It's stupid. It's bad propaganda.

For sure.

I just thought it weird to hear a soldier wasting time 'talking' an enemy into being a patriot. Or talking cowards into bravery. It's easier to sit and criticize than it is to solve the problem, and I mean no disrespect to the soldier.

Maybe the problem is the character of the security force itself, or at least that part of it being berated by the soldier. But I've cannot imagine the cowardice or treason being corrected by a stern talking to. Jewish soldiers, lehavdil, are not cowards to begin with.

And i could care less about arab shame. that wasn't my point.

re: #386 Cognito

I thought it was great. I think people should see this. I think people should understand war sucks and it calls for a different set of behaviors than you'd see in an office. It takes special people to do this kind of work. This guy stood in front of a crowd that could have revolted and caused serious harm. That never stopped him because he had a mission to accomplish. This, for those unable to recognize it, is called bravery.

The Army isn't the girl scouts. People DIE out there. Respect for working as a cohesive unit, respect for the chain of command, respect for lawful orders, respect for the position of superiors is essential to survival. It's not about self esteem out there, it's about killing the bad guy, and keeping the good guys safe. When liberal do gooders come in and get all wrapped up over trying to PC the Army, we lose soldiers. That is not acceptable.

That may well be true, but I think Cog's main point was that the video floating around may well do more damage than the verbal ass kicking speech did good. I think one of the reasons for the success of the surge was Petraus's knowledge of the culture how to deal with the Iraq's. I'd love to see how much Petraus would love the video, i suspect, not so much..

If D-day happened today...

June 6, 1944. -NORMANDY- Three hundred French civilians were killed and
thousands more wounded today in the first hours of America's invasion of
continental Europe. Casualties were heaviest among women and children. Most
of the French casualties were the result of artillery fire from American
ships attempting to knock out German fortifications prior to the landing of
hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. Reports from a makeshift hospital in
the French town of St. Mere Eglise said the carnage was far worse than the
French had anticipated and reaction against the American invasion was
running high. "We are dying for no reason," said a Frenchman speaking on
condition of anonymity. "Americans can't even shoot straight. I never
thought I'd say this, but life was better under Adolph Hitler."

The invasion also caused severe environmental damage. American troops,
tanks, trucks and machinery destroyed miles of pristine shoreline and
thousands of acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands. It was believed that
the habitat of the spineless French crab was completely wiped out,
threatening the species with extinction.

A representative of Greenpeace said his organization, which had tried to
stall the invasion for over a year, was appalled at the destruction, but not
surprised.

"This is just another example of how the military destroys the environment
without a second thought, " said Christine Moanmore. "And it's all about
corporate greed."

Contacted at his Manhattan home, a member of the French government-in-exile
who abandoned Paris when Hitler invaded, said the invasion was based solely
on American financial interests. "Everyone knows that President Roosevelt
has ties to big beer," said Pierre LeWimp. "Once the German beer industry is
conquered, Roosevelt's beer cronies will control the world market and make a
fortune."

Administration supporters said America's aggressive actions were based in
part on the assertions of controversial scientist Albert Einstein, who sent
a letter to Roosevelt speculating that the Germans were developing a secret
weapon, a so-called "atomic bomb." Such a weapon could produce casualties on
a scale never seen before and cause environmental damage that could last for
thousands of years.

Hitler has denied having such a weapon and international inspectors were
unable to locate such weapons even after spending two long weekends in
Germany. Shortly after the invasion began reports surfaced that German
prisoners had been abused by Americans. Mistreatment of Jews by Germans at
so-called "concentration camps" has been rumored but, so far, remains
unproven.

Several thousand Americans died during the first hours of the invasion and
French officials are concerned that uncollected corpses pose a public health
risk. "The Americans should have planned for this in advance," they said.
"It's their mess and we don't intend to clean it up."

Any man who has to step on the back of a woman in order to feel superior to another man is no man in my book.

And, with that, I gotta' take a break 'cause I'm getting mighty pissed.

Believe me, I agree. And I'm pissed about it too.

The one thing that really gets misogynists where they live is a snappy answer from a woman who is plainly smarter than they are. (I wish I could find a clip of it, there's that great scene in "Gran Torino" where the Asian girl takes the piss out of the gang-bangers who are giving her sexist shit.)

Unfortunately, this is where they tend to use their generally superior upper-body strength to "prove" they're better by beating the crap out of her.

Be quick-witted, and carry a big stick!

Watch!

I cannot stand the guy ...

I am on business trip again so I am in motel and turned on the news ...I caught some of the crap about ACORN setting up demonstrations to keep people who are behind in their mortgages in their houses ...they are asking for civil disobedience from their members ...they are masters of this crap ...and who was one of the their biggest instructors ...F*CKING OBAMA ...

What will be the incentive for people to pay their bills if this crap continues ...only proud people will continue to pay their bills and take responsibility for their own lives ...I don't even want to say what I think about these ACORN people ...

Reparations? ...I can't even type how I feel about that ...

These are a people that have only known how to defend their country with a sword at their backs. They are now free.

They have very little experience defending their countrymen without fear of their lives and their family's lives.

They are now being asked to do so out of love for country, not fear of it.

If this DIDN'T happen on a daily basis I'd be pissed. We can't expect people who have never enforced the rule of law out of civic duty and love for country to make the right decisions all of the time. This is a work in progress. This HAS to happen. I know 0bama wants them to take care of themselves and for us to leave, but it is not unreasonable for them to simply not be ready yet. And I would hope that when this soldier leaves Iraq there is an Iraqi who is prepared to talk to his force in exactly the same manner.

My two cents.

I'll be honest, Walter, he wouldn't do that. In my (non-humble) opinion Cognito tends, by profession, to focus on the media aspects of a situation. He focuses on how it looks and that is important. His error is that sometimes he focuses on PR too much and doesn't see that sometimes PR blowback just has to be accepted.

Cog, I like you and respect you as a commentator, but you need to broaden your focus when it come to matters relating to media and public relations.

CAn you explain the mysticism in Lost to me? I was a little bit disappointed in last night episode; Too much Jack and Kate and the whole series is now revolving around the necessity for them to go back to the island. How does Faraday's mom know they have to go back? And how does she know that jack has to give lock some shoes? Even more important why are these things necessary?
It seems they are using the mysticism as a crutch to move the story in desired directions (and add sentimental value) without explaining it. Somebody just says "you must do this, it's necessary" and people just do it. No explanation of how mysticism in the world of Lost works. That was my big complaint about the Desmond story line; if her didn't contact his chick his head would explode. It's just stupid.

That's impossible to imagine, avanti. The USMC has never pussied out like those police were doing. There would be no reason for them to get such a tongue-lashing. Moreover, our officers would call their own men out for failures as, for that matter, would French officers. An American gave this dressing-down because no Iraqi could or would.

I don't see how War of the Worlds = Al Qaeda, which means roughly The Base. Allegedly Isaac Asimov's Foundation series was translated as Al Qaeda, with foundation being synonymous with base (although having a different connotation in English in the context of the actual story), that would make a lot more sense.

I don't like the losses either. However, whether Iraq votes itself into a savage theocracy or into the second coming of Thomas Jefferson the important thing ultimately is that America committed and saw that commitment through. Short of that we are faced with enormous pressure from every enemy we have everywhere and , yes, that will mess with your freedom.

re: #552 Killgore Trout

Ok, you're not paying attention closely. I will try to address some of your questions, using canon of the show, and not my opinions.

The major plot arc of the show is "man of science, man of faith" which was also the name of episode 1, season 2.

Jack, man of science, Locke, man of faith. For almost 3 seasons, there was a lot of mysticism, and mostly "seen" by Locke, and how he perceived the Island and it's mysteries. For all that time, Jack only tackled things from a rational direction.

Season 4 started to "explain" the mysteries by showing us what "science" could be behind the mysticism (ie: time travel).

When Jack saw the Island vanish, that was the first time he considered that there may be more to life than science.

And now, Jack has come from that man of science to a man of faith, he is basing his decision to continue purely on the faith he has in what he is being told, and the desire to "save" his friends.

Every question you ask above has been "justified" by the scripts over the years. This is a very carefully plotted show, and they don't play around with "red herrings."

My best recommendation to you is you spend a few hours searching Lostpedia for answers to some of your deeper questions.

[Link: lostpedia.wikia.com...]

For the sake of your sanity, stay off the "theory" pages, stick to articles about actual show points.

Let me make this a bit clearer - what does the English word "run" mean? Does it mean to propel one's self in a step faster than walking? Does it mean to campaign for president? Does it mean that tear in the back of a stocking? Does it mean a continuous series? Does it mean to execute a computer program?

Yes.

Words can have more than one meaning. When War of the Worlds was translated, they simply found Al-Qaeda to be the title that meant the closest to what they were trying to project in the title.

Sheesh, do you think it's horrific when the 1SG tells a SPC to drop? Chew on this - my husband stopped a soldier because he carried his weapon improperly (it was a change of command ceremony, I believe). The guy got snotty - BIG mistake. He had all 6'3 of my husband in his face screaming, followed by serious push ups. The guy told my husband he was reporting him. My husband's response? He spelled out his last name for him letter by letter and told him to make sure he got it f'n right on the complaint. It's the ARMY. By the way - the guy had to do more push ups for wasting the Commander's time for complaining over nothing.

How much you wanna' bet that that puke's elementary school emphasized self-esteem and non-violent conflict resolution?

Anyways... there's this food co-op in Brooklyn that is contemplating boycotting Israeli goods over the Gaza fight. Yeah, that's fine.

You can't boycott Palestinian goods because the only thing they're producing these days are kassams and bombs. Not food. These holier than thou types at this food coop can sit back and think how righteous they are by boycotting Israeli goods because the Israelis aren't sitting back and taking terrorist attacks lying down.

I'm cool with that, and I apologize for doubting you.

Ok, before I start reading you link: I can dig to whole mysticism vs. faith thing. Locke pushing the button, trusting Linus, etc. Mr. Echo was a great faith character but they killed him off. All of that made sense. Their faith based actions and even the smoke monster, etc. My problem is that they do kinda explain the science (time travel, etc) but they don't explain the mysticism. Why does the Island care if Locke is wearing the right shoes? What difference does it make. Faraday's mom explained that things need to be as close to their original landing on the Island as possible but I didn't catch a hint of why that's important. Why would the Island care?

Take Star Wars for example; there was plenty of mysticism but they explained how that spirituality worked. We knew what the Jedis were all about and we knew their motication and their powers. Lost seems to be using the mysticism as a lazy plot tool to direct the story. I'm hoping there will be more explanaitions next week with Locke's resurrection. They really need explain how the mysticism works.

Well, your questions above is about the SCIENCE, not faith. Mrs. Hawkings explains the "science..."

Jack... the binder in your hands shows all the air routes that fly over the coordinates where I believe the Island will be in little more than a day from now. There's a commercial airliner flying from L.A. to Guam. It's going to go right through our window. Ajira Airways, Flight 316. If you have any hope of the Island bringing you back, it must be that plane. You all need to be on it. It must be that flight. [Sighs] If you... want to return, you need to recreate as best you can the circumstances that brought you there in the first place. That means as many of the same people as you are able to bring with you.

(later in private)

ELOISE: Jack... who do you think? You need to, as best you can, recreate the conditions of the original flight... which is why you need to give John something of your father's. You have to get something that belonged to your father, and you need to give it to John.

So they signed up... so the fuck what?!? If they aren't stepping up and doing their job, they deserve this speech. 692 CyanSnowHawk  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 7:41:08pm

re: #210 naftali

That was stupid. Was he really trying to talk treasonous infiltrators out of their loyalties. They should simply work to ferret out those who need 'talking' to. He wasn't winning any points with any of the other officers, either; He looked like an apoplectic teacher yelling at his out of control class who can't stand him.

You never were in the Army, were you? Running an operation like this is deadly serious business, not some fucking Six Sigma project. This "talking to" is meant to have an effect on every single one of those Iraqi policemen. To the slackers it has one meaning, to those that are doing their part it has quite another. Shame of the group for the actions of some of that group works on many levels. This needed to be said open and publicly like this.

re: #313 naftali

Sorry, what I meant to say was rather than calling out the misbehaving police officer to a fight and spending the next or twenty seconds regaining the floor, the soldier should have hauled off and rammed that guy's face with the but of his rifle. Would have cleaned that smirk right off.

Hoorah!

On a serious note: what makes you think that this soldier's performance exemplifies military training doctrine. What exactly do you think he accomplished with his speech.

The first part should have been marked with a sarc tag, if you did not mean it as sarcasm, you are a fool.
On your serious note, you fail to realize that a talk like this is sometimes necessary. What he intends to accomplish is to galvanize those that want a better Iraq into actions that will provide that better Iraq.

re: #435 naftali

You've been doing nothing but complaining about the conduct of this Soldier since your first post on this topic. How is that not disrespect? BTW Soldier is capitalized, like Sailor and Marine.
It is not the stern talking to that will correct the cowardice or treason, it is the raised expectations of those that want a free Iraq and are ready to fight for it that will correct it. This talk was as much for the cowards among them as the brave.

re: #474 naftali

You were never dressed down for being a traitor and people who join the army are not likely cowards.

This dressing down was pointless. at least as far as i can tell.

If we 'dress down' your silly ad-hom to an argument, it would seek to compare what we see on the video to an american military dress down.

Fine. Why don't you just state your point.

This dressing down was very much like what many experienced in an "American military dress down" and in fact came from the same place. This Soldier was addressing, in no uncertain terms, failings within this unit. These failings were deadly serious and needed to be addressed in a deadly serious manner. Is that point fine enough for you?

That's what I'm getting at. The shoes aren't part of the science, it's part of the mysticism. When jack is putting them on Locke he even jokes about how silly it is and that Locke would be laughing at him. The shoes were an act of faith by a man of science.
Faraday's mom has the Dahrma station under the church that tells her about the fight path but they never explain how she know about the shoes (or recreating the circumstances). They don't explain how she knows it and how it fits into the mysticism/faith world of Lost.

But there are a lot of similar connections. For example on the island physical items that are in contact with the people are also transported with them, like the rope from the well for example. There would have been identifiable DNA in those shoes......
I'm guessing here, but I wouldn't start calling it all mysticism yet.

Locke has to have something on him that belonged to Christian Shephard. I see that as some sort of "cosmic" balance, you see it as some sort of "mystic" balance. Yet, you yourself, Killgore, the atheist, is the man of science, and see that scene as talking about faith. I, and atheist, see that as science.

re: #183 godfrey

So Cog, give us your version of this speech. Some of these guys want to kill you and your men. Let's hear it.

I'm in agreement with Cognito on this matter. Yes, I have heard and read that many Iraqi police are Mahdi Militia and want to kill Americans. But telling them to shape up or f--- off is not going to magically change their minds. As Alegrias and many others have pointed out, the Jihadis are true believers who will do anything to advance the cause of Jihad. Warfare is the only way to deal with them.

I have no idea who filmed this incident. The soldier may have been completely accurate about the Iraqi police standing around him. But having what he said taped and transmitted worldwide will not help us defeat the Jihadis. Only when our military tactics and strategy undermines Jihadi theology and makes them doubt the "will of Allah" will we begin to make real gains in the War Against Terrorism. And I realize this is just my amateur opinion.

This soldier is trying to change a whole culture, not just a squad of Iraqi pseudo-police. This is what Israel has been facing for many decades, and the world doesn't have a clue about this crap thinking Israel is bullying them into victimhood.

Good luck with that, dear officer. In the arab world, military discipline comes by murderous force, not values and professionalism. Welcome to the mid-east, where laziness and constant crying is the driving force of life.

716 So?  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 9:44:41pm

I would have sent this guy to talk to Bush, Rumsfeld & Cheney about wanting to start a war in Iraq.

717 So?  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 9:46:05pm

This soldier proves this war was a waste. Wasted on people who will never ever understand what living in a democracy is.

718 MARedneck  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 10:13:15pm

#717

Seems to be going well enough now with Petraeus and Odierno.

719 koedo  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 10:24:16pm

The part where the US soldier says, 'when the Sunnis come down here to cut your f*cking heads off, I'm not going to do a goddamn thing' is pure gold.

Love it.

720 mattm  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 10:28:54pm

Whoever that is/2012.

721 NY Nana  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 10:33:13pm

G-d bless him. He is a hero! And those who serve with him? Hussein does not have the decency, love of country and courage that is in the tip of a fingernail of one American soldier.

Here is something from the Brits who were serving in Iraq....a bit more in a lighter vein...

722 wiffersnapper  Thu, Feb 19, 2009 11:18:41pm

If this guy said "Yes We Can" I'd actually believe him.

Two questions:

1.) Who the hell is this guy?

2.) Can he run for POTUS in 2012?

725 Macker  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 4:56:56am

re: #6 HelloDare

If only he were Speaker of the House.

'Cept for one thing: he'd have to be a Demo☭rat.

726 hellosnackbar  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 6:04:37am

Is it me or do I get the impression that this soldier lad is a tad doubtful of the
general calibre of these upstanding recruits?
I seriously doubt that the translation is accurate due to the fact that Arab men
take being labelled "women"as a most serious insult; yet they stand there like
a bunch of herded sheep.
Brain damaged liberals would say that he should have respect however dishonest he would feel that to be.
Instead they get it"straight from the shoulder" as if to say I think you're shit
but my greatest pleasure would be for you to prove me wrong.

727 ilzito guacamolito  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 6:40:17am

Good morning.
Woo! I got a Chris Matthews-like tingle in my loins watching that video again. The only difference is that mine was a result of a real man.

re: #5 tackle

The problem with that is it would take twice as long, bcz the translator would have to insert a bunch of 'errs', 'uhhs' and 'umms' for The One to understand.

re: #34 quickjustice

Calling all female lizards! We have identified a prospective mate for you! ;-)

Usually I eat my mates soon after the mating ritual is over. However, this one sounds like a keeper.

729 RC51  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 8:32:28am

WOW - That speech brings back some memories of my time in the Army!

730 RickatLandstuhl  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 8:50:11am

re: #119 Cognito
You have obviously never served in the military, have been scared to death, and were then motivated to do something dangerous. I motivated many soldiers just this way, and then lead them from the FRONT.
As many others have said, war is hell and no one wants to get killed. Motivation takes many means, this is one of them...cookies and milk is another. In context, which do you think would work here, in this place, at this time!

Man thanks to all Lizards who have served, as I have, and to their families, like mine.

731 mindy1  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 9:55:11am

What a real Man-I hope he does not get reprimanded for this;)

732 gunner3160  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 12:52:43pm

This reminds me of the "motivational" talks I received and gave during my Marine years. One way or another, people WILL BE MOTIVATED.

I think that this guy MUST be a US Marine, not a soldier. Although maybe the Army has a few motivated people as well.......

733 Code Red 21  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 1:56:22pm

Hell I'm ready to fight for Iraq. Wonder when they'll send him for sensitivity training? There has to be a few hurt feelings in the crowd.

734 lrsshadow  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 3:09:28pm

That was the best, brings back some memories.

735 baconeatingkaffir  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 3:45:34pm

I just hope the media doesnt wet their pants and have massive tantrums over this one. This guy talked just like my MTIs at lackland in the early '90s did. We had a female TI who would just about reduce a man to tears and often did. "Sergeant., why are you always yelling and cursing at us?".... "Well, I aint shootin' at your ass am I .....? hehehe. If a man is too sensitive to deal with that kind of language he doesnt need to be in the military or the police. My brother worked some with the Iraqi police. He took footage of a group of them jumping up and down and shouting "dirka dirka dirka" like team america. heheeh. The media would love that I'm sure!

736 DesertSage  Sat, Feb 21, 2009 1:39:15am

Yeah, I posted this in the spinoff links a few weeks ago.

737 ShanghaiRay  Sat, Feb 21, 2009 2:31:08am

Anybody commenting negatively about this soldier or his harsh but true words and not standing next to this solider in his daily battle to keep himself, his men and the Iraqis alive why don't you just shut the f*ck up. Don't second guess him unless you're walking in his boots right now. How was your Friday night? Saturday night? Have fun watching TV, walking down a relatively safe street or going out for a few brewskies with your friends? That's what I thought. This guy has a lonely lonely, unthankful job and is hated or at least looked down upon by almost half of the population of his own country.

I also don't know if any of you neigh sayers have noticed but this guy is not a politician and probably doesn't have the time or inclination to worry about hurt feelings. His job is not to be a diplomat or representative of some lofty ideals that don't even work well in our own country but to do his duty - to protect his country and his men and as far as I can tell he's doing an out-fing-standing job.

America is being prevented from kicking ass and taking names in Iraq and Afghanistan by people who want to second guess what our soldiers need to do to get the job done. I'm 100% sure we would have lost WWI and WWII under the same conditions that our poor soldiers have to live through today.

738 Sifty  Sat, Feb 21, 2009 2:36:16pm

I love this guy. I want this guy to marry my sister. No joke.

His money is no good in any bar, any time.

I hope this dude gets home safe and becomes President.

739 AMER1CAN  Wed, Feb 25, 2009 7:46:54pm

This guy is awesome! I could watch this over and over! Keep it up good solider. This is leading from the front! This guy HAS takin the trucks down the road and he WILL fuck your world up if necessary.
