Krauthammer: Obama’s ‘Kick Me’ Diplomacy

Opinion • Views: 3,699

Interestingly, the Washington Post editors apparently toned down the title on Charles Krauthammer’s latest op-ed, from Obama’s ‘Kick Me’ Diplomacy (still visible in the print version) to Obama’s Supine Diplomacy (but they forgot to change the page title).

With a grinning Goliath staggering about sporting a “kick me” sign on his back, even reputed allies joined the fun. Pakistan freed from house arrest A.Q. Khan, the notorious proliferator who sold nuclear technology to North Korea, Libya and Iran. Ten days later, Islamabad capitulated to the Taliban, turning over to its tender mercies the Swat Valley, 100 miles from the capital. Not only will sharia law now reign there, but members of the democratically elected secular party will be hunted as the Pakistani army stands down.

These Pakistani capitulations may account for Obama’s hastily announced 17,000-troop increase in Afghanistan even before his various heralded reviews of the mission have been completed. Hasty, unexplained, but at least something. Other than that, a month of pummeling has been met with utter passivity.

I would like to think the supine posture is attributable to a rookie leader otherwise preoccupied (i.e., domestically), leading a foreign policy team as yet unorganized if not disoriented. But when the State Department says that Hugo Chvez’s president-for-life referendum, which was preceded by a sham government-controlled campaign featuring the tear-gassing of the opposition, was “for the most part … a process that was fully consistent with democratic process,” you have to wonder if Month One is not a harbinger of things to come.

And Kerry is playing messenger boy between Hamas and Obama.

The dictators and despots are licking their chops at this feckless and inexperienced president whose policy initiatives are little more than soundbites of hope and change from the past Administration, which kept those despots and dictators on their heels wondering if the "cowboy" Bush might come down on them.

Now, they're wondering when Obama will grace them with his presence to rub shoulders and open "relations" that mean the despots and dictators live on to see another day and enrich themselves while their people suffer.

But look how AP spins the Bibi news:

JERUSALEM (AP) - Benjamin Netanyahu appealed to his moderate rivals Friday to join him after the hard-liner was formally tapped to put together Israel's next ruling coalition - an alliance that would dilute the power of nationalists bent on derailing Mideast peace talks.

Always reliably biased, that AP.

Avenging Mugniyah

While Lebanon is only ever a few wrong steps away from a war, the case of Imad Mugniyah deserves special consideration. Today is the anniversary of the death of Hezbollah's military and counter-intelligence chief in an assassination for which the Shia militant group blames Israel.

In the run-up to this date, there have been reports of attempted attacks on Israeli targets, Israel's counter-terrorism experts have put its citizens and army on high alert and analysts are unanimous that the question is not if Hezbollah will retaliate, but when. The consequences of such an attack would affect the whole of Lebanon; NOW was told repeatedly that there would be an Israeli military response to a strike.

As the 2010 campaign gears up, a message along these lines may resonate enough to help more of those with libertarian principles get elected. A Third Lebanon War?
Michael J. Totten

Lebanon is quiet right now. The capital, Beirut, is in better shape than it has been in more than three decades. It’s like an Arabic version of the French Riviera once again. That’s one side of the country. There is another. More than once since the Syrian military was evicted in 2005, the Paris of the Middle East became the Baghdad of the Levant.

It is going to happen again. No Lebanese people I know think history has tired of molesting their country. Predicting the timing of Lebanon’s chronic outbursts of violence is impossible, but it’s not hard to see that another conflict is coming sooner or later.

This one is particularly troublesome - the closure came at the behest of Russia, which backed up the request with a massive foreign aid contribution. Not to mention a quick little military soire into a former Soviet satellite state nearby, just in case the message wasn't clear.

Moving that troop increase into Afghanistan with these bases shut down will be problematic, at best. Someone ought to ask The Chosen One exactly how he plans to accomplish it.

Prediction: we will see a major Russian presence established through much of the Middle East over the next two years. After which, Russia will directly or indirectly control roughly two-thirds of the planet's oil supply.

He's not making it any easier to get a good night's sleep.

Maybe we have to have another Carter before we can have another Reagan.

Now for the bad news.
This mornings AP headlines:

Netanyahu gets nod to form new Israeli government - 12 minutes ago
US: Pakistan-style truce in Afghanistan acceptable - 31 minutes ago
Kyrgyzstan issues eviction notice to key US base - 2 hours ago

Obama tells mayors to spend stimulus money wisely - 36 minutes ago
Clinton queries utility of China rights debate - 2 hours ago
Gates: US asks more time for missile base decision - 3

I posted this wonderful remark by the O on the overnight dead thread:

"We have asked for the unprecedented trust of the American people to deal boldly with the greatest economic crisis we have seen in decades — and the privilege of investing unprecedented amounts of their hard-earned money to address this crisis," Obama told a gathering of mayors at the White House.

Apparently the O believes that we are the ones wearing the "kick me" sign.

I also heard that Hillary was doubting the nuclear capabilites of N Korea.

If these people are the "best and brightest" our prospects look a little dim.

I remember Tony C indeed. Conig's stuck on 166 forever and left us with Obama's hope for a bottom of the ninth home run -- with Clinton calling the shot from the mic instead of Curt Gowdy.

The times they are a changin' indeed.

And hey, I remember Ford Prefect, too (following post). Maybe the USA has been designated for demolition as the route for some intergalactic highway (caution: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Reference).

My only question is whether President Obama getting played of his inexperience, or is he following the path of his Leftist ideology?

Same here. Unfortunately, either explanation fits.

re: #89 buzzsawmonkey

Thank you for the extensive feedback.

I understand the reality is his actions may represent a nefarious agenda. But as nefarious as they may be in intent, they are also incompetent when viewed in the interests of this country.

I also understand there is zero chance of a successful impeachment in the next four years. Yet, the American people need to fully understand and appreciate the vert dangerous path we have been place upon. A newly hired CEO who demonstrated their obvious incompetence for the job after a few months would be let go before he/she could do more damage. What he and the democrats in congress are doing, and threatening to do, is extremely damaging.

I am not looking for a quick fix, I am looking to slow them down a bit until the next election. I appreciate your thoughts, and upon reflection, I do understand how calling for "impeachment" could be used as a stick against those calling for it.

Perhaps it should be more along the lines of firing those in office rather than recalling/impeaching them. If the radicals in power start to feel sufficiently threatened by "firing" in 2010, then they may slow down and drift back toward the center; much like Clinton after 1994. How about something softer;

Vote them out in 2010, before they vote to spend again.

105 horse  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 10:01:05am

Or perhaps something more aligned with this thread's subject in diplomacy.

Vote them out in 2010, before they sell us out again.

106 Anna  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 10:08:06am

One can only 'jaw jaw for peace' and succeed IF you have a credible fall back policy. Which in the 19th and 20th centuries meant a really effective military option. Obama never studied diplomacy it seems while he was at Occidental or Harvard.

But a CEO's job is to please the shareholders. A President's job, in a democracy, is to please customers. The interests of the two typically coincide as to results ("give us some stuff, and don't annoy us too much"), but they never coincide as to cost.

Once you see the President as, by design, an elected state ombudsman, it becomes obvious that s/he (whoever s/he is) isn't to be trusted with policy. The Roman Republic had "tribunes of the people" too and it didn't work for that system, either.

108 HippieforLife  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 10:23:52am

I made the mistake of taking a look at DK this morning. One of their top recommended diaries is titled:

I'm sorry many republicans are xenophobic homophobic racist tools

One of the classier lines is:

I’m sorry that I need to hear your whining now that the American public has overwhelmingly rejected the policies of hate and divisiveness and greed in two successive election cycles.

I though that the policies of hate and divisivness had been shown in all its glory by the AG of the United States yesterday.

Who knew he was a Republican?

When the going gets rough, the Democrats always eat their own, after a time... And Obama might actually find himself owning one of the many scandals and acts of lawlessness, formerly distanced by the media...

Weakness is a gamble that Russia & Co. are prepared to use to full advantage... I see a joint effort to raise the price of oil via a US backed response from Israel... Either way it will be either a no-response, or a play into their hands.... (just my view)

re: #93 SixDegrees

And our response will be...?

One response should be to buy more Canadian (read Albertan) oil. But,
they will whine that Alberta tar sands oil is "dirty" so they will buy from and support barbarian Middle Eastern enemies who hate us instead.

Leftist thinking is simple; they cannot see past their flawed mindset, and they have no idea of the Law of Unintended Consequences. That is what happens when all thinking comes from the gut rather than the brain.

The frightening part is that the Obama Administraton views this sham vote, rife with violence & intimidation as "Consistent with the Democratic process" It does make you wonder what their standards for elections really are here.

They are cynical crooks from Chicago who think the ends justifies the means and justify their behavior because they are giving money to the poor. They have no standards.

126 eaglewingz08  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 3:27:01pm

I don't think Krauthammer is right about incompetence or newness.
THIS IS OBAMA VOTING PRESENT ON FOREIGN POLICY. Obama has always voted present on tough issues, and this is the 'passivity' that Krauthammer notices but doesn't link to Obama's career in the Illinois Legislature. When the going gets tough Obama goes to Camp David or to a kindergarten class. Voting PRESENT again and again.

128 barry the baptist  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 7:55:38pm

Very interesting indeed. With respect to Central Asia, clearly another 'Great Game' has begun in earnest. Knowing the Chairman's weakness on historical issues, I am sure that he doesn't even know what this reference means and thus, may not want to engage. He is certainly at least 1-2 moves behind all ready.

As far a leadership goes, I think that Krauthammer is absolutely right when he wonders if Month One is a harbringer of what's to come. It seems that we are going to have some, if not a lot of trouble, on the way and given that the Chairman has never had to make a tough deicison, we should all be worried for our own safety.

129 JCW  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 9:13:40pm

To me, the new title reads as more damning but less clear to the average Obama supporter. Supine being "inactive, passive, or inert from indolence or indifference" (dictionary.com).

The difference between the two, Obama's foreign policy is: an incompetent joke, or indifferently lazy. But that does raise a good question, which is it?

130 Throbert McGee  Sat, Feb 21, 2009 1:08:54pm

re: #35 jaunte

What does an editor gain by softening 'kick me' to 'supine?'

Scolding from a Latin teacher, maybe -- only it's Krauthammer who should be scolded, since "supine" was his own word choice!

Any Latin teacher knows that the literal meaning of "supine" is "lying on one's back, face up"; thus it's opposite to "prone" and "prostrate" -- which both describe the face-down position normally associated with groveling. (Also note that Krauthammer's choice of "supine" clashes with his accusation that Obama has a "kick-me" sign on his back.)
