British Students Required to Think Like Suicide Bombers

World • Views: 3,561

What could possibly go wrong with this brilliant idea? Pupils told to think like a suicide bomber.

The exercise is part of a teaching pack aimed at secondary school pupils that has been adopted by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. It requires children to prepare a presentation on the July 7 atrocity – in which 52 innocent people died – “from the perspective of the bombers”.

They are asked to summarise the reasons why they thought the bombers wanted to carry out their attacks and even suggest some more.

It has been produced by Calderdale council in Halifax, West Yorks, which borders the area where two of the July 7 bombers lived, and has been adopted by schools and even police forces across the country. The pack, which is called “Things do Change”, is intended as a way of addressing issues such as terrorism and suicide bombing through the national curriculum.

But it was criticised yesterday by victims, educational experts and politicians, who feared it could be “dangerous” to ask children to adopt the mindset of a terrorist.

Ya think?

UPDATE at 2/20/09 2:50:34 pm:

The British government has now canceled this idiocy.

And what the f*&^ is the meaning of this program's name, "“Things do Change”? That name so totally exemplifies the limp, flaccid, washed-out, spineless kick-me passivity of the left and its outlook. "Oh dear me, life used to make sense and there once was a difference between evil and good, and in those days one fought for one's country and one's family and oneself. In those days one stood up and took risks for what was right because one knew what was right but ah well, you know, things DO change and whaddya know, poof, they've ... uh ... changed."

Israel critic is reported appointment to top intelligence post
By Eric Fingerhut · February 20, 2009

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A former ambassador to Saudi Arabia with a history as a critic of Israel will reportedly be named to a top intelligence post in the Obama administration.

ForeignPolicy.com reported Thursday that Chas W Freeman Jr., who served as U.S. ambassador to the Saudi kingdom from 1989-1992 and is currently the president of the Middle East Policy Council, will be the chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which plays the leading role in producing national intelligence estimates. The publication reported Freeman has told associates that in the role, he would occasionally accompany director of national intelligence Adm. Dennis Blair to give the president his daily intelligence briefing.

In 2005 remarks to the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, Freeman said that "as long as the United States continues unconditionally to provide the subsidies and political protection that make the Israeli occupation and the high-handed and self-defeating policies it engenders possible, there is little, if any, reason to hope that anything resembling the former peace process can be resurrected. Israeli occupation and settlement of Arab lands is inherently violent."

He added, "And as long as such Israeli violence against Palestinians continues, it is utterly unrealistic to expect that Palestinians will stand down from violent resistance and retaliation against Israelis. Mr. Sharon is far from a stupid man; he understands this. So, when he sets the complete absence of Palestinian violence as a precondition for implementing the road map or any other negotiating process, he is deliberately setting a precondition he knows can never be met."

In 2008, in a speech to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Security Studies Program, he said, "We have reflexively supported the efforts of a series of right-wing Israeli governments to undo the Oslo accords and to pacify the Palestinians rather than make peace with them.

"The so-called 'two-state solution' is widely seen in the region as too late and too little. Too late, because so much land has been colonized by Israel that there is not enough left for a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel; too little, because what is on offer looks to Palestinians more like an Indian reservation than a country."

ISLAM KIDS TAUGHT FORGET POTTER AND PREPARE FOR JIHAD

HARRY Potter books, cricket and Shakespeare have been banned at Muslim schools in the UK where pupils are being taught to hate Britain.

Teachers are also encouraging children to despise other classic British pastimes including chess, music and Monopoly.

Youngsters are ending up living separate lives in “Muslim enclaves” away from mainstream society, research from the Civitas think-tank has found.

And many Muslim parents have no idea that their kids’ lessons are so extreme.

I wonder what their homework looks like?

59 Ron Shaw  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 9:48:34am

Some words and results instantly come to mind from such an insane 'teaching pack':

rationalizations for murder

justification for violence

newly class found empathy for terrorists

the guilty become innocent in the process

the murdered and injured innocents become responsible, in essence guilty deserving what they received

juxtaposition of cause and effect

indoctrination of thought

'terrorist' becomes martyred oppressed

placate those who oppose us

appeasement saves lives even the innocent who are now seen as guilty

self preservation and personal safety becomes contingent on capitulation

might makes right

heartless might converts the weaker in society

60 zato  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 9:48:52am

In other words, they're being asked to think like their lefty, terrorist-sympathyzing teachers who're insensitive to the suffering of the innocent victims of suicide bombings- acts which really are inexcusable.

I have no doubt that any student who suggests that religious fanaticism or the traditional Islamic call for jihad against the infidel will be reprimanded for his intolerance.

How about the article linked off that same page?

Muslim children are more likely to feel alienated than radicalised.

I'm not sure how to react to that one.

Alienation and hatred of society one lives in is the first step on the path of radicalization. The article is an exercise in willful denial of facts.

If the British people summon sufficient outrage to stop this, then there is a hope. If not, then we will see the natural outcome which proceeds from unchecked addictive behavior.

Britain's Surrender to Islamists

This time, no fatwa was necessary. Two decades after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called for Salman Rushdie's murder, U.K. authorities no longer need instructions in Shariah law. In pre-emptive submission to Islamist sensibilities, Britain barred Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders last Thursday from entering the country and speaking at the House of Lords.

His short anti-Islam video "Fitna," which juxtaposes Quranic verses calling for jihad with footage of Islamic terror, threatened "public security in the U.K," according to the Home Office. Since Mr. Wilder has never called for violence -- in his home country, the only life threatened as a result of his work is his own -- the imagined security threat could come only from people opposed to him, i.e. Muslim radicals. Britain is punishing Mr. Wilders not for his own actions but for the hypothetical actions of his adversaries.

What makes this surrender of free speech and fairness -- the most noble of British traditions -- particularly depressing is its totality. All main British parties support the Labour government's ban against Mr. Wilders -- the so-called Liberal Democrats just as eagerly as the Tories. Contrast this with the reaction in the Netherlands. All main Dutch parties -- although they too reject Mr. Wilders's unbalanced assault on Islam -- condemned the British decision.

It's a fitting coincidence that this suppression of free speech in the motherland of parliamentary democracy happened just two days before the 20th anniversary of the fatwa against Mr. Rushdie for penning "The Satanic Verses." Khomeini reportedly never read the book that so insulted him; rumors of its alleged offensiveness were enough for the leader of the Islamic Revolution. In an eerie parallel, rumors are also enough for the leaders of Britain. Foreign Minister David Miliband admitted on Friday to the BBC that he had not seen the film that he nevertheless found to be "hateful." It seems Britain has not only adopted Islamist standards of free speech but also Islamist standards of proof.

There is a direct line between Khomeini's 1989 death sentence against the British author and last week's detention of Mr. Wilders at Heathrow Airport. The "Rushdie Affair" was the first illustration of the West's conflict with Islamists who believe that the Quran is superior to any man-made law.

The protests in Britain sparked by "The Satanic Verses" contained all the elements of Islamist intimidation and Western appeasement with which we are now so familiar. British Muslims burned the book in the streets of Britain and called for Mr. Rushdie's murder, while the police looked on passively. Leftists began their defense of Muslim fanatics -- perfected today -- as the "real" victims who should not have been provoked. And radical Muslims and their apologists for the first time claimed to represent the British Muslim community, a questionable claim that the state made official by choosing them as their dialogue partners.

"Death, perhaps, is a bit too easy for him (Mr. Rushdie)," Iqbal Sacranie, founding secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said at the time. "His mind must be tormented for the rest of his life unless he asks for forgiveness to Almighty Allah." It is now "Sir Iqbal" as this "moderate" received a knighthood in 2005 "for services to the Muslim community, to charities and to community relations."

The Rushdie Affair was the first time Islamists not just ignored national and international law but acted, successfully, to supersede it. They didn't manage to stop the book's publication or to kill Mr. Rushdie -- although the Norwegian publisher and Italian translator were seriously wounded in separate attacks and the Japanese translator murdered.

Well, very often the first step before that is some kind of intervention. Conservatives need to do that on a societal level. It's like teaching teenagers. At some point you have to figuratively smack them upside the head and tell them to their face they're acting stupid. It doesn't matter that they'll hate/resent you for a while. The chilling and cowardly words of Eric Holder

Attorney General Eric Holder thinks Americans are “a nation of cowards” on matters of race. This is the same Holder who kowtowed to Bill Clinton to help secure Clinton’s pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich. And the same Holder who prostrated himself to Hillary Clinton’s political ambitions by helping arrange pardons for 16 Puerto Rican terrorists. Now, he has the nerve to call the rest of us cowards, even as he speaks as the man who controls the entire federal law-enforcement apparatus? Quite simply, Holder has insulted all Americans, regardless of age or ethnicity.

Not only were Holder’s comments morally bankrupt, demonstrably untrue, and compelling proof of his own outlandish hubris; they also carried distinctly chilling undertones of government coercion. It is not the province of law enforcement chiefs to be judges and chief scolds of what their countrymen discuss. The current generation of Americans have spent half a century grappling with – and transcending – deeply rooted racial problems more extensively than any other nation in the world. President Barack Obama’s administration, with Holder its attorney general, is itself proof that Americans have more than discussed racial issues, they have voted their convictions. The glaring hubris of a man who would deem himself fit to pronounce such moral judgments on his fellow citizens is astonishing.

The context of Holder’s remarks, meanwhile, was chilling. He spoke on Wednesday not in some philosophical setting like a college graduation but in his official capacity as attorney general, to the employees at the Department of Justice. He talked of using DoJ to “creat[e] … artificial opportunities to engage one another” in conversations about race. Yet Holder also seeks to define what sorts of “conversations about the racial matters that continue to divide us” are acceptable. For instance, regarding affirmative action, he castigated those who, according to his own Olympian discernment, are “on the extremes [and] who … advance nothing more than their own, narrow self interest.”

Bizarrely, Holder criticized “the alternative [which] is to allow to continue the polite, restrained mixing that now passes as meaningful interaction.” Who is he to decide what private interactions should be “allowed”?

Amen.

I think part of the problem is that economics is very complicated and most people don't understand it. The other problem is that nobody has an alternate plan that we can point to and say, "this would have worked."

Not only do most people not understand it, nobody empirically grasps it. The very best economic minds in the country are looking at the same set of data, and reaching opposite conclusions. And the chosen model -- good old Keynes -- is untested.

So. We'll see.

Man jailed for using girl as sex object

A married man who used a 15-year-old schoolgirl as a sex object was jailed for 21 months today.

Amjid Raj, 31, of Swallow Street, Keighley, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child in September 2007.

Prosecutor Timothy Capstick told Bradford Crown Court the single offence took place at the girl’s home.

She confided in her school friends about what had happened. Two months later, her mother found out and the police were alerted.

In September 2008, Raj was charged with rape. His guilty plea to the less serious offence was accepted by the Crown.

Mr Capstick said Raj was imprisoned for five years in 1999 for supplying Class A drugs.

ABC radio news had the audacity, the unmitigated gall to report that the Obamanation is 'going to hold cities acountable' for spending their pork pie.

One example of so-called wasteful spending was a million-dollar waterpark for Pine Bluff, AR.

Somebody better watch it. Pine Bluff is the largest 'majority minority' city in Arkansas. It is the crucible of ACORN, the fountainhead from which all else has flowed. Not to mention, this thing is 'for the children'.

What do you mean, "How is this going to help the economy?" Why do you hate poor children?

I watched a Frontline / PBS show last night, Inside The Meltdown, on the financial crisis.

They placed the blame squarely on Bernanke and Paulson. Tim Geitner was portrayed as a genius. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank were portrayed as heroes sounding the alarm.

I almost puked.

No mention of the CRA.
No mention of Franklin Raines.
No mention of Jim Johnson.

They laid the blame squarely at the feet of Republicans and their "buddies" on Wall Street.

Al Gore to get a fatwa?
Cleric: Biofuel may be sinful for Muslims

An Islamic scholar in Saudi Arabia said using ethanol or other alcohol-derived fuels in vehicles may be a sin for Muslims.

Sheik Mohamed al-Najimi of the Saudi Islamic Jurisprudence Academy told Saudi newspaper Shams that the prophet Mohammed banned alcohol for all uses -- including buying, selling, carrying and manufacturing, Al-Arabiya reported Friday.

Najimi said Muslims who use biofuel, which is made from fermented plants, in their cars are violating the ban since the substance "is basically made up of alcohol."

The cleric, who said his statements represented only his personal opinion and not an official fatwa, called for further study of the issue by Islamic religious bodies.

Oh goody!
I got an email from my congressional crapweasel!

As a public service to all of you, I've removed references to my state, allowing you to fill in the name of yours. This way, if you are not the fortunate recipient of personal correspondence from your elected official, you can be the first on your block to pretend you are.

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. I truly appreciate hearing from you, and I am working hard to stand up for {your state} interests in Congress.
H.R. 1 is an important piece of legislation that will create over {some large number} new jobs for {your state}. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will rebuild our schools, our roads, and invest in economic infrastructure around our state.
I will remain vigilant in monitoring the use of taxpayer money to make sure it is invested to create jobs, help middle class families who are struggling, and help rebuild our roads, bridges, and schools.
This legislation requires transparency to ensure that the funds are used as effectively as possible. As part of this bill, all announcements of contract and grant competitions and awards, and formula grant allocations must be posted on a special website created by the President. The website must also include the names of agency personnel to contact with concerns about infrastructure projects.
While this legislation is not perfect, it will invest in getting our economy moving. It is the necessary and right step toward stabilizing our economy and creating millions of jobs for Americans sitting around the kitchen table worried about how they will make it through this economic crisis. Perhaps just as important, it is the down payment on rebuilding the American Dream.
On February 17, 2009, H.R. 1 was signed into law. Please know that I will continue to work in Congress to help {your state} during this difficult economic time.
I encourage you to continue to contact me about the issues that are important to you. Please feel free to visit my website where you can share your ideas with me, learn about the services I can provide to you, and sign up for my periodic e-mail updates on what I am doing to help {your state}.

I guess we should declare once and for all that the British WANT to be destroyed from within.

Sorry - but you're wrong.
The NuLab government has shown and is showing the same disregard for our country which you have spotted being shown by PB0.
Its a leftist, moonbat thing - and in the same way as you'd be very upset if I would ascribe moonbat attitudes to you, in one fell swoop, because PB0 is now your president, so I'm upset when you speak of 'The British' like that.

Also - same as in your country, the MFM here have been in the tank for NuLab, for the last ten years. They have not and are still not reporting how ordinary people feel. You can get an impression if you look at some of the comments on the Beeb, for example - which are very ehavily moderated.
Change is coming here - and the next government will work very ahrd to get rid of all we all have been complaining about, from your side of the Big Pond as well as here.

So obituaries for the demise of Great Britain are a bit premature.

For those of you who fell for the Atlantis hoax that's making the rounds today....
Hopes dashed as Google Ocean image of 'lost city of Atlantis' proves to be nothing of the sort

There were just two problems.

First, the grid of streets, walls and ancient buildings turned out to be the size of Wales.

Even given the supposedly advanced technology, that meant Altantis was 20 times the size of Greater London.

And second, the grid of lines doesn't actually exist on the sea floor.

According to Google, the pattern is an "artifact" of its map making process.

Details for the ocean maps on Google Earth come from sonar measurements of the sea floor recorded by boats - and the area around the Canaries was mapped by boats travelling in a series of straight lines.

That's an excellent post. This is my favorite part:

Progressives love to describe everyone opposed to wealth redistribution as "greedy," but the truth is that socialism itself is founded primarily on greed: the idea that one man can get something for free by using the power of the government to take it away from someone else. Socialism becomes totalitarianism when the haves have been sucked dry, and yet the have-nots are still restless. At that point, the state must resort to false propaganda and violence in order to keep the restless masses under control. We have seen the pattern over and over again, and we don't want it here in America, period.

Remind me what Clinton did to "actively" stop Al Qaeda?

re: #289 Kenneth

This proves these clerics are uneducated ignoramuses. Notice anything funny about the word "alcohol"? It's from the Arabic "al-kuhl". Medieval Arab alchemists developed the process of distillation and used it to produce perfumes & medicines. Using alcohol is not banned, only drinking it is.

This is true. Plano ISD has student high school populations of 5000 plus all ready. The class sizes are probably all ready 24 and rising to the low to mid 30's.

I work in the next district over from them. We are smaller but I have 30+ in all of my classes (1/3+ are Hispanic). PISD is getting ready to start laying off employees after this school year and I am sure that our district might do the same.

What next, an exercise on WWII "from the perspective of the Nazis"?

WTF?

They could do a unit on the Holocaust from the perspective of the Nazi guards! They could even build their own Lego Auchwitz and pretend to gas Jews. How wonderful and educational that would be!
// X 10,000

367 yesandno  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 11:14:56am

The exercise is part of a teaching pack aimed at secondary school pupils that has been adopted by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. It requires children to prepare a presentation on the July 7 atrocity – in which 52 innocent people died – “from the perspective of the bombers”.

They are asked to summarise the reasons why they thought the bombers wanted to carry out their attacks and even suggest some more.

Might be that this society, which apparently puts a lot of stock in being childlike rather then adult, is looking to 12 year olds to come up with solutions to problems they are either unable to solve or simply don't want to face. The young being the risk takers might actually come up with something.

That said, this has to be the most stupid idea I have seen since the stimulus package. As if suicide bombers are capable of rational thought...willing to die for a cause or another human is one thing....taking a whole bunch of innocents with you is murder...murder....murder...

Nothing heroic about it. And nothing justifies it.

I was bound and determined that I would use cloth diapers for my children. "Save Money, help the environment" I thought. Bought a pack of cloth diapers and used one of them exactly once. It was disposables from that moment on.

The problem wasn't the cloth. The problem was the sheer impossiblity of immeadiately washing the used cloth clean. Hence the 'diaper pail'.

Now I've got a strong stomach. Not much makes me gag. But the thought of that pail makes my gorge rise even today.

I think this surge is precipitated by LLL politicians, who are now seeing the fruits of their multi-culti attitude. They've tried to sweep all dissent - even in kindergarded - under the carpet, but people can only be fooled for a certain amount of time.
Here, they've started comparing their real lives with what they're being told by the politicians and the MFM - and they see that things don't add up.
The groundswell for a Tory govenrment is rising every day.
But don't expect to hear much from the TOries quite yet, the daily harrassemnt of Gord excluded.

Seriously, what is the point of this exercise? The author says this:

"We're looking at why people become extreme. Why do young people go out and do what the bombers did? Was it pressure from individuals they were hanging out with?

Hopefully, we'll encourage pupils to stay away from those individuals."

"Hopefully." Yes. The brainlessness of this word hopefully speaks volumes about the quality of educational "theory" pushed on UK school systems.

The education department withdrew the pack from the teachernet website yesterday.

But they wouldn't have done so had there not been an outcry. Thank God there are still functional brains in the UK. Let's hope they reproduce enough to keep the UK from falling into complete dhimmitude. I'm not holding my breath.

Seriously, what is the point of this exercise? The author says this:

"We're looking at why people become extreme. Why do young people go out and do what the bombers did? Was it pressure from individuals they were hanging out with?

Actually, they don't really want to find out what really motivates these people to become extremists. The answer is clear enough.

I've always suspected that al Qaeda expected the Democrats to attempt a coup immediately following 9-11. They didn't go that far, at least.

You need the military for a coup, something the left will never have.

Re: Facebook, MySpace, and the like.

I have a fairly common name. It's not John Smith, but it is common enough that I've never lived in a metro area of the United States without having at least two others listed in the books with 'my' name.

As a matter of fact, my MIL once called in semi-hysterics because she'd read in the paper that my wife and I were getting a divorce (Dude had not only my name, but was married to a woman with my wife's name).

So I'd hate to use my real name. It seems so unfair to have some innocent crystal-holding, mantra-chanting, long-haired dope smoker unfaired tarred with my incorrect world view.

Oh, New Yorker Redneck, Clinton was our president in Feb 1993 when Al Qaeda try to take down your New York World Trade Center towers during his first two months in office.

Remind me what Clinton did to "actively" stop Al Qaeda?

clinton just does not appear to be fueled w/ such anti-american hatred like O does. that is my point. by comparison to O, clinton looks far better, despite his dereliction of duty. given all the evidence and info abt. O, he seems to be hell bent on destroying our country. clinton made mistakes because he was a coward and a skirt chaser. O seems to be a sinister maniacal purpose driven man, out to "remake" this country. remake to me means destroy.

btw, i was downtown when the first attempt was made on the wtc and 6 people were killed. i noted he did not even show up to look at the damage.

re: #417 yma o hyd

Ahem.
Mainland Britain stood up against IRA bomb, for quite a number of years, as did the people in Northern Ireland.
If the government is actually on the side of the people, and isn't trying to re-make them into something according to their leftist ideas and ideologies, then people will not mind paying the price.

The people could prove able to stand up to the risks, but they first need to know what is at stake, and they are not being told that. Islamist terror tactics have also scared many who would speak out into silence. As I always point out: I don't want or advocate bloodshed. My fear is that the Islamists are numerous and resolute enough that it is likely unavoidable, at least at a low level.

re: #33 nyc redneck

students should NOT be compelled to think like a terrorist.
this naturally implies learning to be sympathetic to them.
students should be taught that terrorists are evil barbarians and deserve no quarter.
the only people who should learn to think like a terrorist is perhaps law enforcement charged w/ taking these pos losers down.

Agreed.* To think like someone else is in a sense to come to love them, to be them. If not wholly, then in one carefully walled off corner of the mind.

It's terribly difficult to think like a madman, as Heath Ledger discovered. It's terribly difficult to be an undercover cop, and some go bad. The stress on spies is incredible. You have to compartmentalize like crazy to stay sane.

This kind of thinking is an occupational duty for a valiant few. To ask it of anyone else is to ask much too much. To ask it of children is insane and abusive. The psychologically easiest path for a child would be to just go the whole mile and not pretend. To think like a suicide bomber by feeling martyred and plotting vengeance against the whole world. Look for arson, assaults, assaults with knives, and so on, from a disturbingly large if numerically small fraction of the children given this instruction.

* As to the "no quarter", that's a mistake. He who never takes prisoners, never has anyone to interrogate and never wins over defectors, counterspies, or just quitters looking for a way out. Even if one cared nothing for public opinion, it would be bad policy to always play the deguello and hoist the black flag before beginning an attack---and to put to the sword all those who raised their hands at the end of the fight. "no quarter" is cruel, excessive, and counterproductive.

473 arromdee  Fri, Feb 20, 2009 12:31:24pm

I wonder what would happen if a student responded to this assignment by saying "I've been taught all my life that the West and Jews are evil and deserve to be killed, so I'm supporting the honor of our village by giving my life to kill some" or some similar reason which is unflattering to the terrorists.
