Tennis Star Andy Roddick Won’t Play in Dubai

Sports • Views: 3,368

The World Tennis Association has imposed a large fine on organizers of the Dubai tournament for excluding an Israeli player, and US tennis star Andy Roddick has announced he won’t play in the tournament.

The WTA yesterday fined Dubai Tennis Championships organizers a record $300,000 - more than double its previous high - after Israeli player Shahar Peer was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates earlier this week.

The WTA also took steps to compensate Peer and ensure she and other Israeli players won’t be shut out of future tournaments in the federation. The UAE and Israel do not have diplomatic relations.

Also, U.S. star Andy Roddick said he wouldn’t defend his Dubai title next week. “I really didn’t agree with what went on over there. I don’t know if it’s the best thing to mix politics and sports, and that was probably a big part of it,” Roddick said.

Good thing about this - it now places pressure on other players to do the same. And if Tennis bails on Dubai, other sports will follow.

Dubai is trying to build a “brand” that is a western friendly playground for the rich. If the elite athletes start bailing, the brand gets damaged.

Dubai can no longer prosper off of its oil.

Same thing came about when athletes and then entertainers started boycotting South Africa.

Dubai will get the choice of being rich or publicly hating Jews. They will go for rich.

Meanwhile, back in the Washington of HopenChange …

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A former ambassador to Saudi Arabia with a history as a critic of Israel will reportedly be named to a top intelligence post in the Obama administration.

ForeignPolicy.com reported Thursday that Chas W Freeman Jr., who served as U.S. ambassador to the Saudi kingdom from 1989-1992 and is currently the president of the Middle East Policy Council, will be the chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which plays the leading role in producing national intelligence estimates. The publication reported Freeman has told associates that in the role, he would occasionally accompany director of national intelligence Adm. Dennis Blair to give the president his daily intelligence briefing.

In 2005 remarks to the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, Freeman said that “as long as the United States continues unconditionally to provide the subsidies and political protection that make the Israeli occupation and the high-handed and self-defeating policies it engenders possible, there is little, if any, reason to hope that anything resembling the former peace process can be resurrected. Israeli occupation and settlement of Arab lands is inherently violent.”

He added, “And as long as such Israeli violence against Palestinians continues, it is utterly unrealistic to expect that Palestinians will stand down from violent resistance and retaliation against Israelis. Mr. Sharon is far from a stupid man; he understands this. So, when he sets the complete absence of Palestinian violence as a precondition for implementing the road map or any other negotiating process, he is deliberately setting a precondition he knows can never be met.”

An outstanding memory of these short stops, was my amazing at how cool the temperature was in the terminal walkways—you could see the sun blazing away outside, but then one day, I had more than just a few hours layover and walked outside…wham. a wall of heat. I mean a sledgehammer smack down kind of heat when I opened the door.

Compared to Saudi, UAE doesn’t have much oil, which is why they went the regional financial center/real estate route. UAE is kinda the Las Vegas of the area (so is Bahrain. hell, any other place in the region is Las Vegas compared to the unhappy kingdom). A lot of pious Saudis go there to have a couple drinks and do some gambling. The global credit crisis has killed the idea of UAE being a regional finance center. The global real estate implosion has killed UAE’s real estate market. Now the beginnings of a sport’s boycott? UAE is running out of streams of income…. it will be interesting to see how they handle this. If they do a ‘obama’ and mess this up , they got real serious issues. Plus, now Iran is talking about Bahrain being the ‘16th province’ of Iran or some BS. Nothing like the threat of possible conflict in the region to make matters even worse.

Dubai regularly offers “appearance fee” monies to the top players to appear at their golf and tennis tournaments so Roddick is giving up the cash to make a stand against Dubai’s ingrained anti-semetism. It will be interesting to see what other athletes turn down the cash to take a moral stand.

Kragar, go for the meds. Anxiety attacks suck, doubly so if they mimic a heart attack - or trigger one! I’ve seen the meds work just great for people. You might actually like them, give you a little more detachment, let you be cooler and stay that way without becoming the kung fu master, real better living thru chemistry, good ol’ SSRIs, could probably find some herbal or dietary equivalents, probably, you might even try switching out to those after a while, if you’re happy with the results, or if you’re not.

My Mom used to work with an animal rescue group. For about 5 years, I had the job of breaking in wild cats, getting them used to human contact. Went thru a lot of sweatshirts and quite a few cuts, but very rewarding when you finally got them to come to you and initiate contact. This sure says a lot about the character of Roddick and the lack of character of pretty much all of the women on the WTA tour (none of whom dropped out to support one of their own). Particularly sleazy are the loathsome Williams sisters, who trot out ever racial complaint known to mankind (witness their annual griping about Indian Wells) and who take poor sportsmanship to a new low. But if there is a requirement for them to make a sacrifice or a stand for someone who isn’t of their race (ex. the Zina Garrison contretemps with the Fed Cup team), forget it. Good for you Andy- and Dubai good luck with the tournament now that Djokivic basically has to carry the whole thing.

About the good diet thing—maybe bad & hard times are good for our health. A “blessing” in disguise if we cut back a bit.

My fitness club’s magazine talks about “Cucina Povera”—yummy Italian food for poor times! Lots of healthy comfort food Sicilian style. Of course you have to like chickpeas, tomatoes, olive oil, basil, grains, the usual mediterranean staples.

I hope Kragar’s physicians are good in their diagnosis, and if so, just wanted to say, of those millions of people taking SSRIs these days, they probably really do help at least *some* of, and I’ve seen at least one (1) case where they worked terrifically, really improved the quality of life overall. I guess I’ve seen some others, too, now that you mention it, but hey, just well worth a try, is all I’m babbling about.

Over the course of a year we went to two different doctor’s. They had no idea what was wrong and wanted her to start taking medication etc. We really had no idea that a gallbladder could cause those kind of symptoms. Then my wife ran into this lady who was a nurse and they got to talking and it just randomly came up that the lady had her gallbladder removed due to ‘panic attacks’ / ‘chest pain’ conditions. My wife was really wondering about that and we scheduled another appointment. Sure enough. Way bad gallbladder and gallstones…etc. We would have had no clue otherwise.

I know what you are saying, this ‘gallbladder’ thing is just our experience. Everybody’s body has different issues and such.

I tried vinegar chips for the first time a couple a months ago. I’ve been hooked ever since.

It’s the best snack ever.

Well, that and tangelo oranges… =)

re: #172 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Hope all works out for you. Whatever you do (here comes cheap, unsolicited Internet advice) don’t discontinue SSRIs without your physician being very involved. I weaned myself off one years ago without authorization, and I’ve had a loud high pitched squeal in my ears (my current Doc says it’s actually in the brain) ever since. Non-stop, aggravating white noise.

I saw some fluffy story on him once and I thought he seemed like an air head (a few years ago, no doubt he’s grown up a bit). I’m happy to be proven wrong. Good job, Roddick! :D

Right now, I doing breathing exercises and trying to keep distracted. I’ve got a bunch of models I’m working on, so just focusing on them.

Is it the breathing that starts with your diaphragm, breathing through your nose, couting to five, then holding it for five seconds, then exhaling for five seconds through your nose, repeat as needed? As a former patient of full-blown PTSD who still has issues with anxiety, I’ve found this method relaxes me to my toes.

Salt and Vinegar is good, too. Better than Barbeque flavor, which I also love (a bit too much). Well, to be honest, I like potatoes, in any form, but chips? Manna from Heaven.
I may have to get out my mother’s old recipe for pan-fried potato medallions (sliced very thin with the skin on) with garlic and fire up the skillet. They went great with baked chicken breast, plus cottage cheese (fat-free, of course).

Oooh. Sourdough pretzels. Next to salt and pepper potato chips, my worst vice.

Here in central OH, at Aldi, we can get Clancy’s cheese puffs and crunchy cheese snacks (Cheetos type). Cheap, and incredibly addictive. You can finish off half a 12-oz bag without realizing it.

/I’ve done it several times in the mornings here on LGF.

Fall out continues over the United Arab Emirates refusal to grant Israel’s Shahar Peer a visa to play this week’s Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

The Wall Street Journal Europe has cancelled its sponsorship of the Dubai tournament over the nation’s refusal to permit Peer entry into the UAE.

“The Wall Street Journal’s editorial philosophy is free markets and free people, and this action runs counter to the Journal’s editorial direction,” the WSJE said in a statement.

The announcement comes a day after Tennis Channel announced it will not televise the tournament out of protest for the treatment of Peer.

“Tennis Channel regrets to inform our viewers and tennis fans that we are canceling our upcoming coverage of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships in Dubai, U.A.E, originally scheduled for this weekend,” Tennis Channel Chairman and CEO Ken Solomon said in a statement. “Unfortunately the event will exclude a single player who has been blocked from entering the country due to her nationality. This is despite her having qualified for the competition via her on-court performance and current ranking. Tennis Channel recognizes that this exclusion has been made by state authorities and neither the tour nor tournament directors themselves. However we also honor the role and proud tradition that tennis has always played as a driving force for inclusion both on and off the courts. Preventing an otherwise qualified athlete from competing on the basis of anything other than merit has no place in tennis or any other sport, and has the unfortunate result of undermining the credibility of the very nature of competition itself.”

A lot of people take SSRI’s and don’t do the rest of the work they need to get better. They are not magic bullets.

I was taking short rapid breathes thru the mouth, then I realized I was watching a video on child birth.

I’m doing something similar.

You know that short, rapid breaths are the precursors to panic attacks, right? Of course you do. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be condescending.

re: #111 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

This sucks. I’m used to be a fairly energetic emtional guy. Now when I start getting worked up about anything, I can feel my chest pains kicking in and all the other symptoms the Docs told me were an anxiety attack and to avoid. I feel like I’m being forced to muzzle myself. I’m supposed to be starting some meds next week to help reduce those feelings, but I’m scared about the side effects.

Again, this fucking sucks

I live in a retirement community (avg age is 77) - Many here are stressed over the economy and the impact on their incomes.

Water aerobics classes have more than quadrupled. Our gym has been reorganized to accommodate more users. Yoga, Tai-Chi and meditation classes are full and expanding. More folks are our just walking.

My doc has me on Rx quality Omega 3 and Niacin rather than Lipitor and other prescription crap.

Check out Vivaxl … @ [Link: www.nutraceutics.com…]

Cheaper than Rx and great side effects.

Salt and vinegar chips are amazing. But addictive. And when you get to a certain point (about half a bag) you realize your taste buds are red and swollen and the roof of your mouth is raw.

Nothing like food that hurts. ;D

And throw in some DHEA as well. Check with your Doc. If they don’t understand Omega 3, Niacin, Folic Acid or DHEA - I’d find a new Doc that did.

I wonder if the Golf Channel will/would have the same courage of principal.

BTW, several highly-ranked tour players have homes there now. And, of course, Tiger is way in cahoots with Dubai: (sorry, soy newbie and don’t know how to properly imbed the link)

Ya’ know. One of the reasons so many of us left LGF was the four letter words so easily given and accepted (No names mentioned). Charles used to keep this place kind of clean but I guess other people have decided to trash the place,

And no I am not a prude yet I can express myself without cursing.
