BBC: Iran held "backroom" talks with Western diplomats

Iran offered to stop attacking coalition troops in Iraq nearly four years ago in an attempt to get the West to accept Tehran's nuclear program, a British diplomat told the BBC in an interview aired Saturday.

As some of you may recall, something like this was my proposed explanation for these events:

1. As the Bush presidency drew to a close, the coalition suddenly found itself decisively winning the Iraq war, which previously was a tough fight at best, and an unwinnable quagmire at worst.

2. Bush repeatedly insisted upon doing nothing to stop Iran's nuclear program, and reportedly even forbade Israel from doing anything about it.

3. The National Intelligence Estimate in 2007 inexplicably took a bizarrely soft approach to Iran, claiming that Iran's nuclear weapons program remained halted.

This article states that none of the European countries accepted the deal, but I'm wondering if President Bush did, in order to salvage some of his legacy and at least go out on the winning side of the Iraq war.

re: #101 winston06

I remembered to ask about your situation today. It looks like the military is the way to go. If you go to the State Dept, NSA, CIA etc. you are looking at 25 years of service at a foreign post before there is a chance at getting citizenship and there's no guarantee you will get it. It wouldn't be that bad if you get posted in Paris or Rome but I'd guess you'll spend 25 years posted in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or if Obama reopens the embassy in Iran you'll spend the next 25 years in Tehran.
The military offer is very sweet. Most of the front line interpreters (along the Iraq/Iran border) are local guys not enlisted Americans. You may get some front line assignments but as a Westernized enlisted man you'll be be in high demand (thus the military's sweet offer) and I'll bet they'll treat you nice and advance you pretty easily. A recruiter can give you more particular info but the military is by far the best option out there.

Without having read the article your assessment leaves me wondering if that is a positive or a negative outcome? Seems like a negative to worry about a 'legacy' as opposed to a freak regime getting a nuke.

The article doesn't say anything about Iran even making the offer to Bush, only that they shopped it around Britain, France, and Germany. I'm merely speculating that maybe they made a similar offer to Bush, and he accepted it. I don't know if that's true. If it is, then I agree, it was at best an extremely dangerous gamble, and probably profoundly irresponsible.

Iran still clinging to its terrorist roots....
BBC: Iran held 'backroom' talks with Western diplomats

Iran offered to stop attacking coalition troops in Iraq nearly four years ago in an attempt to get the West to accept Tehran's nuclear program, a British diplomat told the BBC in an interview aired Saturday.

"The Iranians wanted to be able to strike a deal whereby they stopped killing our forces in Iraq in return for them being allowed to carry on with their nuclear program -- 'We stop killing you in Iraq, stop undermining the political process there, you allow us to carry on with our nuclear program without let or hindrance," said John Sawers, now the British ambassador to the United Nations, in the documentary, "Iran and the West: Nuclear Confrontation."

As a woodworker I would like to just interject a word of caution.....do not, I repeat....do not burn exotic woods that you are not familiar with or are not specifically for cooking. There are many woods in the world that have very toxic oils in them.

Patience! In days of yore whenever you made a copy of scripture, it had to be copied out by hand. I've worked in restaurants before. For six or seven years, all total. If you knew everything that goes on in the back, you wouldn't really want to eat out any more. I didn't for years. I just try and pretend that I don't remember anything.

yah I have done restaurant work a lot also. I am leery of eating in any restaurant unless I just don't care that day. I've seen cooks recycle food. Worked with someone who ate old restaurant food and got a bad case of salmonella. Almost killed her. Washing hands is not done enough by food workers. My feelings about it are exactly like yours. I try and cook more. And I think the standards in those days were higher than todays.

re: #215 notutopia

It works very well. I used this as my guide. I didn't use the soup can because I used a solid block of pear wood, not chips or dust. I found that using my weakest soldering iron works best. All you need is a light haze of smoke. The smaller iron also creates less heat. One small block will last pretty much the full 12 hours. I cheated on the rinsing time, I think I rinsed for 1/2 hour and stopped, the salmon cam out slightly saltier than I prefer. In the future I'm going to use the top 2/3rds of a full filet and save the bottom 1/3 tail section for regular cooking. since the tail end is thinner it absorbs a little too much salt and smoke. The best stuff come from the top 2/3rds of the fillet.

Wash. – The state is sending out hundreds of thousands of $1 checks to the state’s neediest residents. It’s a plan that’s supposed to bring millions of dollars worth of food stamps to the state by March.

re: #274 Killgore Trout

Thanks for sharing your whole processing! I have been using a Bradley smoker for several years and it automatically feeds a stack of flavored round wood bricks. Each brick only last 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. They are rather expensive if you are doing a long smoke.
I will try your method for my next batch of Salmon. I once made a batch that I soaked in thin natural real maple syrup and no salt at all. It was heavenly and not overly sweet at all. Melts in your mouth!

On of my favorite Far Side cartoons:

Elevator viewed from a lobby.
Left-rear, secretary w/ glasses & armload of file folders.
Next to her, a bear cub, standing upright.
Next, an empty space along the back wall.
Right rear, an enormous bear, standing upright.

Foreground, out in the lobby, man walking away from us, carrying a briefcase, head down.

Secretary looking wide-eyed.
Bear cub looking innocently curious.
Adult bear GLARING downwards at the incoming man.

Caption (IIRC): "Tragedy struck when Conroy, absorbed in work, stepped onto an elevator ... in between a mother grizzly and her cub.

My wife, as many of you know, was born in raised in the Soviet Union, she was shocked to see these books. She said they are exactly like the ones for Lenin and Stalin they had in her school back in the USSR (Hey, You don't know how lucky you are, boy!).

Actually, she shouldn't have been shocked to see those books considering all the Marxist symbols, theatrics, etc., she kept pointing out to me during the election campaign.

Patience! In days of yore whenever you made a copy of scripture, it had to be copied out by hand. And whenever the Monk (Monks were among the few people who could write) wrote the name of his Deity, the Monk had to stop, throw away the pen, ceremonially wash himself, pray for a while, and THEN he could get a new pen and continue writing.

Quality takes time!

Wow! How many times is the name CHARLES in that cookbook! I may have to wait a really long time, if a pen is thrown away each time the lizard monk writes CHARLES.

But of course the cookbook will be worth the wait!

I'm so excited I'm dancing on tiptoes!

There was a snake called Nate. His purpose in life was to stay in the desert and guard the lever. This lever was no ordinary lever. It was the lever that if moved would destroy the world. Nate took his job very seriously. He let nothing get close to the lever.

One day off in the distance he saw a cloud of dust. He kept his eye on it because he was guarding the lever. The dust cloud continued to move closer to the lever. Nate saw that it was a huge boulder and it was heading straight for the lever!

Nate thought about what he could do to save the world. He decided if he could get in front of the boulder he could deflect it and it would miss the lever. Nate slithered quickly to intersect the boulder. The boulder ran over Nate, but it was, in fact, deflected, leaving history to conclude that is was better Nate than lever.

re: #148 Killgore Trout

Thanks my friend. I will get in touch with a recruiter as soon as I get to the US next month. I am a bit too old for the US Marines' enlistment and I don't know what Army is like (didn't hear good thing about it) and I have a little background in the Air Force.

Any ways, Thanks again

No need to walk through a book store to feel that creepy cultishness. Just strike up a conversation with an average blue state resident. You will find that they have absolutely no command of facts, yet they are perfectly comfortable fillibustering you by shouting you down with insipid bromides.

Hello my name is RUGBY and i am a terrifyign monster from A DISTANT PLANTET!

plz note: i used to be a lovable & pretty rat (Rattus norvegicus) who lived on earth and sometimes posted on LFG but that is a different story and too long & boring to get into right now.

the executive summary though is that unlike my old cute and furry serlf, now i am extremely scary, 247 feet tall, and can bite a GRAPE WHITE SHARK (Carcharodon carcharias, aka "Jaws"!) in half AS THOUGH it were a delicious piece of candy!! BUT it's still okay to call me "Rubgy" like in the old days okay? and probably i will not eat you

BTW getting onto the Internet wh en you are a 25-stroy high monster is no picnic i can tell you...

yes it's true!? in spite of the ADA Act, basic accessibiltiy remains a porblem across the Universe. for straters, it is hard to use a normal keyboard if you only have THREE figners and each one is roughly teh size of a 7-11.

BUT ENOUGH about me! how have you guys been?

Love & XOXo,

R*UG*B*Y*!

Especially after the inflation that HAS to be coming after Obama and the Donks have printed two or three trillion dollars over the last month or so hits us. We're going to Zimbabwe, bay-be!

(We are so fucked)

First stop, Japan. The federal government's promises could amount to close to 9 trillion. Our national debt right now is around 10 trillion. Our GDP is about 13 trillion. Our tax revenue is about 2.5 trillion. If you do the math, it ain't a pretty picture.

Uh oh. If it's influenza, I highly recommend Tamiflu (although in your socialized medicine country, I don't know if it's available). Barring that, lots of Jewish penicillin chicken soup for you, my dear.

re: #303 espkc

Finally in, and glad to join the crowd. Did any of you make it to the anti PORKULUS rally in Kansas today? We froze our butts off.

Welcome. Yes it was COLD this morning. The local "media" (I use that term loosely) reported:

"OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Everywhere you go people are worried about the economy. Saturday morning about 100 people got their fears and frustrations out." NBC KSHB-TV News

The police estimated the crowd at about 500, the organizers said we were closer to 750. All I know is that more than 100 showed up, and the KSHB truck was there early and stuck around so this is obviously a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

Oh well, what can you expect from the local MSM? Not much more than this...
