I would defend the liberty of consenting adult creationists to practice whatever intellectual perversions they like in the privacy of their own homes; but it is also necessary to protect the young and innocent.

"I have encountered a few "creationists" and because they were usually nice, intelligent people, I have been unable to decide whether they were really mad, or only pretending to be mad. If I was a religious person, I would consider creationism nothing less than blasphemy. Do its adherents imagine that God is a cosmic hoaxer who has created that whole vast fossil record for the sole purpose of misleading mankind?
And, although I do not necessarily agree with paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin's advocacy of evolution as a proof of the glory of God, de Chardin's attitude is both logical and inspiring. A creator who laid the foundations for the entire future at the beginning of time is far more awesome than a clumsy tinkerer who constantly modifies his creations and throws away entire species in the process."
I'm going to save that quote in case anyone tries to sneak creationism into our school. Not that it would have any effect on the YEC but it would give me a chuckle and a bit of encouragement.
Every time I think that I'm volunteering too much time at my daughters' school, something happens to remind me that I need to keep a close eye on what they are being taught.
So does anyone else find it funny that the best program on Fox News nowadays isn't really a News Show but the Red Eye. So much for a Fair and Balanced Fox News. It's still the best of the lot but is rapidly throwing out all semblance of integrity.
I've often wondered about that. Why is it so easy for some people to believe that God created the fossil record as some kind of a hoax or test or something?
I encountered a preteen on Shelfari who spouted a lot of the creationist nonsense. I just felt sorry for her. She didn't even have a basic understanding of evolution; she just knew that it was completely wrong.
Thanks for listening earlier Sharmuta, I was conflicted over what to do with that information. I despise backstabbers, and I try to keep track of them.
His Gregalogue tonight about Tarantino being lazy by using a Nazi as the villain in his latest movie was brilliant. Greg suggested a terrorist would have been a better choice.
re: #49 Gus 802
Kinda like a friend who said damn lawyers. Someone asked him why he said because I have to deal everyday with my neighbor who is a french canadian jewish tax lawyer. The he was accused of being an anti semite because he disliked his neighbor who went ahead and strived to achieve parity with a racial stereotype.

Ah, right. See, can't say one way or the other. I kind of said something about attorneys the other night. Was just a fleeting comment on my part.
I suppose... I mean, I've gone through bits of politically-related gloom the last few weeks, but I haven't melted down. I just find it hard to believe that so many people on the right are melting down, but when I see meltdowns en masse like tonight or the Coulter kerfuffle or the Hannity hufflebaloo... it makes me wonder if there's something massively wrong here.
Remember: winners keep their heads when others are losing theirs.
I was just wondering why he would say civil war. If anything the appropriate term would be revolution. Big mistake on his part to say civil war since it implies us fighting each other. I don't think that's what the outcome would be all about.
Thanks for listening earlier Sharmuta, I was conflicted over what to do with that information. I despise backstabbers, and I try to keep track of them.
Not gonna be a civil war. Most of the Lefties hate guns, they don't allow them in their houses, don't teach their kids about them, etc. OR, if there is a civil war, it will be short.
I missed his name, he hurled an insult at Charles and was gone. I think he was registered for 5 years with a few comments. Sorry I'm a bit tired and the beer ain't helping so I could be mistaken and misread a comment. There were so many getting wacked over in the last thread I was like Whack a Mole. All of it over Glen Beck. Sheesh.

Yep. And the Feds will win. Last time I checked those guys have a lot guns, choppers, A-10s, F-18s, and such.

Clearly, Sir, you have not met my father. Although I'm not sure he would meet your definition of a lefty.

Now that the screaming has died down, though, what exactly was Beck predicting?

You assume they would be willing to use them on their fellow Americans. Back in the 90's only about 25% of the military was willing to do so. There is no telling if the remaining 75% would try to stop them from doing so.
Actually, I was talking with an Obama voter last week. For 3.5 hours. He's more of a libertarian and a free thinker. Sceptic. Anyway, he talked up the stock up on food and arms aspect. Former USMC.
You assume they would be willing to use them on their fellow Americans. Back in the 90's only about 25% of the military was willing to do so. There is no telling if the remaining 75% would try to stop them from doing so.
I think if they see it as a matter of their own survival, they will shoot back. Perhaps not at first but eventually it would be a bloodbath and the government would win. Regardless.
Anyway, I was going to work on my family emergency plan this weekend, so I suppose the doom is another good reason. You know, that and the Impending Large Earthquake.
I think if they see it as a matter of their own survival, they will shoot back. Perhaps not at first but eventually it would be a bloodbath and the government would win. Regardless.
If ordered to attack other Americans, who knows whether or not they would.
If they are attacked I'm sure they would defend themselves and win. All I know is that if I saw an M1 Abrams parked in the street I would definitely leave it alone.

I do not wish to see our military men and women put in a position where they have to make that choice. That would be a disaster in itself.
Man made global warming! Manbearpig tax! Did you have a show tonight?
No. This is crossover week, last show ended last weekend, new show opens next week. The Visitor Sigmund Freud meets... god?
Vienna, 1938. The Nazis have invaded Austria and are persecuting the Jews. On this April evening, the Gestapo arrest his daughter Anna and take her for questioning. Freud remains alone and desperate when, suddenly, a stranger enters through the window. The visitor, a frivolous and cynical dandy in a tuxedo & top hat, has some incredible things to say. Who is he? A mad man? A magician? Is this merely a dream? Or is he really as he claims, God in person?
From reading today's article, it appears to me that Steyn has fallen into a classic (and very common on these type of blogs and forums) logic trap - the false dilemma:
So what's the greater sin? That Miss Shaidle fails to draw a clear bright line between a generally observable phenomenon and a statistically 100% universal phenomenon? Or that even raising the generally observable phenomenon is now beyond the pale?
The problem here is... why must we consider a "greater", or lesser, sin worth rejecting but some other on the scale (of sins) not? One can readily reject both.
Americans have a bad habit of defying predictions and behaving fairly well under pressure.
That they do. Especially Americans and the rest of the world. A survival instinct takes over and it does not include going out and shooting people or starting a war with your neighbor.
The downfall of civilization has been way overrated for almost 2000 years.
Same here. Or the ripping sound of a vulcan cannon? No thanks.
I've read and agree with some of John Ringo's Last Centurion. If there was a big catastrophe to beset the United States any local militia that would spring up would be out of necessity for law and order to help bring society back to normal. They would work with local law enforcement, National Guard Units and US military units considering their makeup would be and should be mainly former/retired military and law enforcement. Civil War would do nothing to help this country and ranks up there with zombie holocaust fantasies.
Hopefully it won't happen. It certainly wouldn't help and would hurt those of us wanting to stop obama and the left.
Exactly, that would be massive PR loss dare I say. Now that's were we could face a logistical problem. If we allow this kind of talk people will think we're guilty by association. Fact I think.
re: #89 Gus 802 Problem is the military isn't there to protect the government the military was established to protect the constitution and that is what they swear to do. Not to blindly obey Obama but to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and Domestic"
I decided some time ago that Glenn Beck is a silly person and quit watching him. There seems to be a sort of Gresham's Law at work in TV: Lose a Brit Hume and pick up a Glenn Beck. The trend consistently is down.

Yes, or as I sometimes tell socialists, you'll just replace one set of lunatics with a far worse set of lunatics. In the end I'm pretty sure I'd wind up fighting with the Feds. Which is rather ironic.

Right, but that's why we have the SCOTUS, congress, lower courts, etc. Obama is president but he's not King.
Exactly, that would be massive PR loss dare I say. Now that's were we could face a logistical problem. If we allow this kind of talk people will think we're guilty by association. Fact I think.
I'd say fact based on historical precedent. The black helicopter crowd hurt us over time. People associated us with them because they were against Clinton and pro-gun.
I knew they would come back around if obama won. It took them longer than I expected to surface tho.
I don't know what to say except I'm sorry. This is very disappointing.
Disappointing indeed. I imagine it must feel a bit like finding out a long time friend or close relative is a bigot when you start dating a gal who belongs to a racial/religious group they disdain.
That should be against the law! Those things will make you sick, they are terribly addicting.
The English have a serious sugar tolerance. I have never seen another group of people eat so much chocolate. They also drink whiskey at lunch. I mean, people who aren't alcoholics do this. It's disconcerting.
OTOH, after you've had unlimited access for a while, I find that they get less alluring. By the end of my time living in London I was pretty blase about the eggs, except when friends would come from California, and freak out, and then I would freak out all over again with.

Deja vu with the Ruby Ridge angle "all over again." I know. We have to be level headed and pragmatic.

My wife is from Wales and if she's very good or I'm very bad I go to this Australian store in Leavenworth, Wa. and get her real English treats, makes her day it does.
re: #153 Gus 802 I mentioned that because you talk about the military supporting Obama in this Fictional civil war of Beck's but if it occurs it will occur based on Obama raping the constitution and I doubt you will see most soldiers supporting the Govt in that endeavour.

The true blue, hard core black helicopter crowd are without political affiliation. That Jones character sees conspiracies no matter what party holds office.

Not supporting Obama. But supporting law and order and their own safety. It would become a survival instinct.
re: #165 Rustler
The military does not support the gov't. It supports and defends the Constituition. If, God forbid, the sitting gov't tried to subborn the Constituition it would be the militaries duty to throw them out.
I consider Jones to be a complete menace. He personally inspired one guy to do harm to some pals of mine. The perp now sits in prison. Jones, however, is unrepentant.
The true blue, hard core black helicopter crowd are without political affiliation. That Jones character sees conspiracies no matter what party holds office.
Yup. They are loony. Back when I was teen working retail, I had one of them go of on a rant about how money was worthless because it wasn't backed by gold, "fraudbacks" and the tri-lateral commission and Bergermeisters. I just wanted to ring the guy up. Jeez.
re: #168 Gus 802 He's already starting to mess with the 2nd amendment by taxing the hell out of ammo this will waen the population off guns and make it easier for him to take them away. Or do you assume hes gonna try to take the guns out of a well armed and equiped populace.

OK, well, I've always said they'd go after ammo. Don't look at me I'm just a plebe. The Nanny State will expand with these guys.
My guess is that Obama won't mess with the 2nd Amendment. We'll have to wait and see.
If they are smart he won't until he gets a second term. I'm hoping he won't at all.
He could still do some things to hurt gun owners and keep it under the radar.
He could write an executive order banning imported part kits or ammo for example. Most people wouldn't hear about it or care.
OK -- when Charles starts in on Glenn Beck it is becoming too much. The Lizard army, if you agree with this, is about to be laid useless. Glenn is a person with high morals, high intellectual capability and the show he presented, replicated at hot air is simply a 'scenario' show. a what if? Recall, he's a talk show host, charged with getting ratings!
If you have not watched all three of the shows over at hot air (click on the link)...do not respond.
Glenn is simply trying to show us all how this may play out. He is on our side.

I haven't herad him push that. I have heard the owners of that company making the coded ammo you speak of push it.
re: #182 Bobblehead
That's fucking out of control intrusion. Sheesh what a mess. I'm surprised the island hasn't half sunk because Winston is spinning so fast.
I doubt you will see most soldiers supporting the Govt in that endeavour.
Soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines will obey the commander in chief! we are not a third world country. Don't pretend to understand what the military might do, unless you were one of us.
"A law that has just passed in California allows micro-tracing of bullets that have been discharged in a crime so that they can immediately be traced," said Obama. "This is something that California has passed over the strong objections of the NRA…That's the kind of common sense gun law that gun owners as well as victims of gun violence can get behind."
Then I'm confused. How could you make the statement "He's already starting to mess with the 2nd amendment by taxing the hell out of ammo..."
I can't even find anything that indicated that any bill went to congress?
I hadn't heard of that proposal even making it to Congress. Last I heard it was only on the state level and pushed by the company that makes the "coded" ammo. BTW, the company has multiple members that are known gun grabbers.
Basically our sales tax on everything went to 8% as of today. Ammo is part of it. But, that's just the CA budget.
Ok, but that is not a separate sales tax on ammo. That's not a bill passed to congress by the Obama administration. Nothing like this has happened yet.
And it makes no sense trying to imply that. It's not happened.
An elderly relative of mine has been going on about that whole gold backed dollar thing lately. I have no idea where she is getting this, as far as I know she gets all her news from the 700 Club. Is Robertson and Co. digging deeper into the troofer dirt?
oh, free science nerd tip, just in case anybody was fooled by those stupid acai berry/"total colon cleanse" web ads for weight loss...ex-lax will do the same thing for less money.
not that I recommend it or anything, but ex-lax is also manufactured by a real pharmaceutical company, so you will actually know what you are putting into your body.

Then let's not be talking about ammo tax, bills in congress etc, when it hasn't happened.
re: #198 soccerdad
I think you need to do some research on what the Military is sworn to do before you try making a statement calling me out like that when you claim to be in hte military yourself.

re: #202 Walter L. Newton He had his proposal written up in early January to supposedly push into Congress when he took office never saw it pass assume that if he did the work to write it up he submitted it once he took office, if it wasn't passed down I apoligize maybe he realized something like that day 1 would actually hurt him badly.
I was one and it is the oath you swear to defend the Constitution not the nutjob running the Country.
Well good on ya, and thanks for your service.
So where is the mechanism for our guys to decide who is a nutjob, etc.? No...as much as I despise BHO, (would not piss on him in a gutter to put him out if he was on fire) I think your rhetoric is harmful. do not begin to talk about rebellion within our military. Not gonna happen.
I know--that's why I qualified the statement. No one I know of has read through the Stimulus bill--Law, now-- to see what taxes are in there. There is no redacted version of which I know. I do anticipate a tax on ammo, much in the same vein as a "sin" tax on cigarettes and alcohol--which I'm sure will rise and will affect me a lot more than a tax on ammo. I tend to go through more Scotch than bullets.

actually, the M-1 has many vulnerability issues, especially in the urban environment, although personally, i'd target the fuel tanker. %-)
One in five Los Angeles County residents -- nearly 2.2 million people -- are receiving public assistance payments or benefits, a level county officials say will rise significantly over the coming months as the fallout from the recession continues.
The percentage of people on county aid already equals the figure at the height of the 2001-03 recession and far exceeds the one in seven who needed help during the economic downturn in the early 1990s and the one in nine assisted in the collapse of the early 1980s.
re: #212 Hard Right
Yeah but Obama supported the bill and had as of about a week prior legislation to nationalize the CA serial tracking plan maybe someone told him it wouldn't work, but his intent was to put it to congress.
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

I never advocated rebellion. I stated if Glenn beck's civil war occured it would be a result of Obama stomping on hte Constitution and it would not be the military's responsibility to support the Government in that case.
No, Glen, like other conservative talk show hosts, is channeling Peter Finch's "Howard Beale". This is a mere ratings grab. The whole concept of Conservatism is in flux right now and everyone is grabbing for the reins.
Soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines will obey the commander in chief! we are not a third world country. Don't pretend to understand what the military might do, unless you were one of us.
i seem to remember something about "legal" and illegal" orders...
please don't get the impression that Pamela Geller is a good representative of objectivism. I'm pretty sure an objectivist would know not to compromise with neo-nazis. I remember going hopefully to her blog and feeling woefully mislead by the title.
A blue-ribbon national transportation commission is expected to release a report next week recommending a VMT tax.
The system would require all cars and trucks be equipped with global satellite positioning technology, a transponder, a clock and other equipment to record how many miles a vehicle was driven, whether it was driven on highways or secondary roads, and even whether it was driven during peak traffic periods or off-peak hours.
The device would tally how much tax motorists owed depending upon their road use. Motorists would pay the amount owed when it was downloaded, probably at gas stations at first, but an alternative eventually would be needed.
Rob Atkinson, chairman of the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission, the blue-ribbon group that is developing future transportation funding options, said moving to a national VMT tax would take about a decade.
Next will be the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the amount of keystrokes you type each day. (However, you'll get a tax break for watching more than 5 hours of television each day.)
I never advocated rebellion. I stated if Glenn beck's civil war occured it would be a result of Obama stomping on hte Constitution and it would not be the military's responsibility to support the Government in that case.
ok - then I stand down. Apologize if I misconstrued your post. I almost resigned my commission under Bill. I effing HATE liberals and all they stand for.
I'll be holding the video camera while you do your thing.

good: they're more likely to shoot the guy with the camera, since, from a distance, it looks like an RPG or similar weapon... i'll be a few blocks away, cutting off the fuel supply, because once that gas hog burns up what's in the tanks, it's a very expensive, poorly located pill box. HEMMET trucks, otoh, are soft targets. logistics is the ball and chain of armored warfare.
my comment wasn't really related to the thread so i shouldn't have posted it. objectivism just doesn't appeal to me. not being personal or anything. it didn't have anything to do with geller.

This hole convo started because of Glen Beck's civil war talk. So Gus mentioned that anyone who followed suit would have to worry about apaches and A10's and such I provided the counter point most Americans aren't going to rebell unless the president violates his own oath to support and defend the Constitution.

In the End yes you are the final one in hte decision making chain if you feel the order was unlawfull then by all means disobey but remember you still have to defend your decision after the fact likely in a court of law as the Prisoner abusers learned.
In the end, the responsibility is always personal.
Maybe in the military, but in the rest of the country more and more no one's responsible for anything - everyone's a 'victim' of something or another.
wheee!

True Dat. That there is a problem and a thread all by itself!
That is why giving an order is a hell of a responsibility.
Again...True Dat.
Redc1c4, Syrah, and Rustler...thanks for the intellectual excercise. I think we part ways in violent agreement.
I have a feeling that, were you with guys/people with me at Barnaby's (in west chester) tonight, we would have been saying loudly, NO, NO, JUST listen for a second! HERE'S WHAT I MEANT...BLAH, BLAH, FUCKING BLAH. And we would have ended up buying beers for each other.
Goodnight, lizards. Like I said, I was just here for a drive-by. I got my LGF cookbooks today and they're great. I am giving one as a gift. Just reading the choice comments and puns , as well as the artwork, makes it worth it, even if you aren't much of a cook. Buzzsamonkey's tree-hugging poem is hilarious. I am surprised I missed the post at the time.

Dude, I'm pretty sure that Charles didn't attack Beck's morals or his intellect -- just Beck's poor judgment (and perhaps overall lack of wisdom) as evidenced by this scaremongering episode.
how low will the market go on Monday, after they've read and digested Juggy's plan for the budget?
money quotes:
Obama also seeks to increase tax collections, mainly by making good on his promise to eliminate some of the temporary tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003. While the budget would keep the breaks that benefit middle-income families, it would eliminate them for wealthy taxpayers, defined as families earning more than $250,000 a year. Those tax breaks would be permitted to expire on schedule in 2011. That means the top tax rate would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent, the tax on capital gains would jump to 20 percent from 15 percent for wealthy filers and the tax on estates worth more than $3.5 million would be maintained at the current rate of 45 percent.
And Obama's budget seeks to tax the earnings of hedge fund managers as normal income rather than at the lower 15 percent capital gains rate.
Look, Glenn Beck is a very funny guy when he's on stage, delivering his stand-up material. So are a lot of strange people. That doesn't mean I like to hear him mouth off on TV night after night. I don't like ideological screamers and pontificators. I would prefer to learn the nuts and bolts of an issue from people who don't already have their minds made up and their egos involved.
(Okay, I like O'Reilly -- he may have his very large ego involved, but he will climb down from a position when presented with detailed facts. Glenn Beck, he just... On the other hand, I think he's really scared for the future. I know the feeling.)
Looks like I've got all the precious metals I'm going to get for the time being (thanks juggy!). I'm not completely unprepared, but what I have right now is kinda like bringing an axe handle to a gunfight...
re: #306 Fenway_Nation //Well if your really quiet and noone sees ya an axehandle to the back of a gun carriers head will solve the whole gunless issue :P.
Yeah. It's depressing. The end result will be that they'll just take more money from the productive class and the investment class to give to the government to give to the unproductive and ignorant class that will continue to be unproductive and ignorant regardless of what government program they'll suck off of. The poverty class will just use the money to watch more Springer reruns.
Yeah, Glenn may be scared for the future but he doesn't have to broadcast to everyone as well. I think I got fed up with all the Y2K hype, not to mention listening to all that crap on conspiracy radio.
re: #305 Mardukhai
His personal fear is no excuse for him to Sensationalise those fears inspire them in the rest of the populace and create his own Self Fulfilling Prophecy tho.
I don't have any proof of this, perhaps someone might have a link to it, but I thought I remember Glenn Beck either being a troofer or at least entertaining the notion for a short time back when the troofer movement first started to get really obnoxious (during the 2004 election cycle). Am I remembering correctly or am I confusing him with someone else?
Woohoo today on Jerry Springer Unwed teenage welfare mothers and why Bush is to blame. Jerry Jerry Jerry
Yeah, just about. I hate to sound mean but these people are addicted to their victim status. Somehow I don't see them using the money to learn a trade or take some courses in physics, calculus, or history.
Still haven't found the most recent missing girl in Florida but the Sex predator was picked up, so maybe some good news unless he already got rid of the body(god forbid).

Someday we'll bring back insane asylums and stiffer penalties for perps like this. Until then, we all have to suffer this type of insanity. We can thank Geraldo and many other for this.
re: #314 ArchangelMichael Looks like he is a huge asshole so he may have believed it. But from the article there it seems more that he didbelieves the troofer theory and merely hates because they complain to much.

not to mention punishing people for creating wealth or jobs.
why invest if they're just going to take it from you?
To be fair, Steyn is defending Pamella Geller based on her attempts to create a memorial for Aqsa Parvez, who currently lies in a rather unmarked grave. This probably does not indicate that Steyn supports the entire panoply of racism and insanity that is Geller and her cohort.

but it's a stupid idea to begin with, therefore supporting it is stupid too. the facts of *who* is pushing the idea is just insult to injury.
Actually, I was talking with an Obama voter last week. For 3.5 hours. He's more of a libertarian and a free thinker. Sceptic. Anyway, he talked up the stock up on food and arms aspect. Former USMC.
I read that California's state government is so bankrupt that it may go into federal receivership, with the U.S. government bailing it out. This will be a first in American history. California's politicians act as if they are victims of some unforeseen natural disaster. Anyone with a shred of mental integrity knows that they spent the state into bankruptcy, with other people's money--and now demand other people's money from outside of their state, to clean up the mess. What happens when the other 49 states go into receivership? Will the federal government bail all of them out, too? And, when this happens, will the federal government go into receivership? Who will bail IT out? Certainly not private industry. Most of private industry is being bailed out (more by the day) by the federal government.
If there's any silver lining in this unraveling disaster, it's watching state governments fall to pieces from lack of money. Businesses cannot recover until government gets out of the way. The worse things get, the more people will be forced to realize that either government gets out of the way, or it's the end of America. The end of government as we have known it--as a reckless, welfare-pressure group redistributive state--will be a great thing for mankind. Either government as we know it goes--or we all go. I sure hope it's the former and not the latter. But either way, Big Government has reached its closing chapters. The money has run out and the productive source of American energy--thanks to Big Government--is drying up. I'm so sad about the decline of American productive energy, but I'm so happy that government now has so much less to suck on.
I'm just starting to get it. The collapse of America, by definition, means the collapse of Big Government. If enough people want it, this can be a whole new beginning for America. Stay tuned and survive, if you can.
He posted that because it gets him off. He would like to see it happen. He seems like a nice guy with a nice wife. Some everyday chops. end of timer people are usually in cults. Haley Comet types. Evolution passes them all by.

Pamela Gellar is the wrong person to be pushing this idea... that is true.
Aqsa Parvez was killed by her father and brothers, and by all accounts, her mother is indifferent to her death. A grave marker is not going to come from her family.
The desire to see a marker there is a gesture of humanity. It is not "stupid".
Trouble is who is pushing the idea. She's been turned down flat by the people running the cemetary. There is a bit more to the story, but I don't have the links handy. A real shame other wise. Besides it seems to be driven more by agenda then humanity.
We have a similar situation here in Australia. New South Wales, the biggest state, is also in dire straits mainly due to mismanagement by politicians who kept raising state taxes until the most productive businesses moved interstate. As the taxes intake declined the government raised taxes again with even more businesses leaving. The result is that NSW, the Australian powerhouse, has been reduced to begging for funds from the federal government.

So far, it's not enough for them to make a cause-and-effect connection, unfortunately.
Except for the last part about the collapse of America, I hope he is right.
The advanced nations have driven the redistributive state further than it can healthily go... even without the current economic mess, Europe, America, and the Far East can't afford the entitlements they have already promised. The global recession simply moved the day of reckoning forward by a decade or so.
re: #350 Afrocity
Both were plodding affairs. The series didn't get much better IMHO. Some of his stuff was good, and thought provoking. He definitely wasn't one of the best writters, but he was at least one of the good ones.
In a preview of political fights to come, both New York State and California budgets are being crippled by outsized public sector union pension obligations that are now coming due in a perfect storm—a combination of an aging population, a declining tax base, and a fiscal crisis.
Flakes, Turkish Delight bars, anything by Cadbury, really...Jaffa cakes.
I'm guessing that these do not have the slightest resemblance to actual lokum (the Turkish name for "Turkish Delight"), since I don't think I've ever met anyone who was a fan of it -- even in Turkey. I mean, it's not lutefisk-bad, but it's a pretty disappointing candy.
Thank you for the link. I was hoping you were making that up, but I am gratified that lizards can relay truth which is what this website is all about, mostly.
But I'm not relying on those quotes... my friend spoke with relatives of some of the houseboys. Poverty is crushing there, some families surrender their children to such fates for monetary compensation. It's why pedophilia sex tours are common in that part of the world.
This and this refute those claims. You have to scroll down to find it on the second link.
the first link worked for me. Now that my memory has been refreshed on that subject. I do remember it being bandied around a fair bit. Almost one of those type of rumours that just won't quit. No matter what people have had to say about it.
Ah- but Chicago has more than one team to choose from, including another seemingly hopless, cursed team that got off the eight decade championship shnide not too long ago...
Oh, if there was something to this it should be major news. When I wrote, "raising hell to high heaven," I meant what I would do if similarly charged. I do not want to believe this of Clarke and have no reason to believe it. Sometimes the strengths of the internet are its weaknesses.
All of this talk of homosexuals lead me to read up on it:
. ..For example, male penguin couples have been documented to mate for life, build nests together, and to use a stone as a surrogate egg in nesting and brooding. In a well-publicized story from 2004, the Central Park Zoo in the United States replaced one male couple's stone with a fertile egg, which the couple then raised as their own offspring.

I don't deny the slight possibility it is true but I don't want to believe it. That being said I know a big stink would have been made if anything was turned found. I also don't think he would have been stupid enough to talk about it openly unless he was on his deathbed at the time, and he wasn't. Also every source I can find on the Internet where that leans toward it not being true is rather legitimate, and every source claiming it to be true, rather shady. Random blogs, tabloid sites, etc.
The claim as stated and the so called evidence of it presented does not pass my bullshit detector.

I'm a transplant living out on the West Coast and typically my best bet to catch the Red Sox in person is when the play the Angels (including the ALDS, it seems) or those even more rare occasions when they play the Dodgers or Padres for inter-league. Having said that, I actually got to follow the Red Sox around a little in '05...starting w/ some interleague play in St. Louis before they moved up the road to play the Cubs @ Wrigley. I caught the opening game before flying back- Maddux beat Arroyo in a Friday afternoon affair. I loved Wrigley park, it was one of those places I always wanted to see in person and it would've been a shame to miss the opportunity to catch the Red Sox in the National League's most celebrated ballpark.
Thought about going back last year when the ChiSox were hosting the BoSox on the south side and the Cubs and Cards were going at it on the north side. I scrubbed those plans when I ...
A) Spent most of my stimulus money- remember those $300/$600/$1200 checks the dems sneered at?- on a day-trip to Seattle to catch the BoSox vs Mariners and
B) Was invited back east by my family for my granpa's 89th birthday and got to catch the Sox/Yankees at The House ThatRuthBuilt Epstein Wrecked on the 4th of July, the first 2 games between the BoSox and Twins @ Fenway and a side trip to the HOF in Cooperstown...
/worthwhile trip, but no Giordanos deep-dish pizza
You never caught a game in Fenway itself? For all its quirks and flaws, I love it- there are no signs or signals prompting the crowd to cheer or applaud (I was actually a little disappointed to see something like that in Yankee stadium last year). And although it's a bit early to contemplate it, I honestly hope that the Bruins will be hosting an outdoor game in Fenway against Montreal next season's NHL winter classic like what they did with Wrigley on new year's day...
There are no more passionate, knowledgable and loyal fans in baseball than the denizens of Red Sox Nation. (Granted you could also throw in obnoxious, drunken, boorish, overbearing...).
I will withhold judgement. He admitt to bisexual behavior not molesting teenage boys in the Playboy article. I find it oddly Ironic that when Sir Clarke's knighting was going to occur the allegations popped up.
Which movie? Assume you mean 2001: A Space Odessey. While far from being my favorite piece of cinema, one thing which I appreciate about that movie is the more realistic portrayal of the issues of space flight and science. A great deal of "science fiction" today really ought to be labeled fantasy, IMO.
I hafta say that ever since innaguration, I've rediscovered talk radio on the Right. I give Glenn Beck and Bill O'Rielly a wide berth, since at times I honestly think they were Mobys elevated to their current status soley to discredit the political right in this country. When possible, I tend to be more of a Laura Ingraham and Lars Larsen listener- I think I'm more impressed with Larsen owing to his background as an investigative journalist and being a farily laid-back host based out of a rather hostile municipality such as Havana on the Columbia Portland, OR.
Of course, there's the ever popular default of sports play-by-play and I'm also listening to more financial stuff as the market deteriorates (mostly simulcast stuff from CNBC, Bloomberg or FOX Business).
Nope, I have never been to Fenway. Walked by it everyday. My school even gave us free tickets occasionally. I studied so much that I never got around to it. I never went to Martha's Vineyard either.
I agree. Most movies have errors so large that it's sickening. Even when they have "advisors" on staff. One of the recent Mars movies made me gag. Most of the science in it was so bogus it was bad. But if they tried to keep the movie plotted out to physics most stories would be boring. Like 2001. Just my opinion, take it or leave it.
/here's a good website that likes to destroy Science Fiction myths with the cold hard realities of physics. Atomic Rockets.
re: #419 Consanescerion
Here is a counter point by a Sri Lankin.
There are some comments in this board is based on pure ignorance. I am from Sri Lanka and live probably few miles from Clarke lived.
1) Pedophelia charges against Clarke is just rumors. You can not prosecute people based on rumors.
Comment 2) Clarke's celebrity in such an impoverished place would provide quite a bit of cover.
Let me tell you Clarke lived in the richest area of Colombo (probably better than 75% of London). There is no reason to believe that if the newspapers find out they would not publish it.
It is no secret that Clarke associated young boys. These young boys are not poor boys. They are rich ones with parents who have powerful positions in the government. If they had suspected that their sons were sexually molested by Clarke, believe me Clarke would be in trouble.
Now it is fair to say media is pre occupied with the ongoing war and other matters do not get much coverage.
I love Glenn Beck and O'reilly. Hannity too. I was a DEM until last year. I now listen to talk radio as well. I like Laura Ingram, but I don't catch her show much. I disagree with her conservative stance on women's issues.
re: #431 Iron Fist The allegations were raised in 1998 and were totally unfounded as he was never convicted all charges dropped and his name should have been cleared but remained tainted.
People who know my politics simply assume that I'm a Republican when that isn't the case. I would vote for a hawkish/pro-military, pro-2nd amendment Dem (I guess they'd be what's called Blue Dog Democrats) if one ran for office out here, but we're stuck with the likes of Pelousy, Boxer, Feinstein et al...
A Dem who ran on those issues would be much better than some of the RINOs we have out here.
I don't know what the controversy is all about. It seems that some have an image of figures that they admire; when confronted by a counter narrative i.e. the person is gay or a philanderer -they reject it as false in order to preserve their memory.
It is often never mentioned in the African American community that Malcolm X had homosexual experiences.

How did you know I was a PUMA? I used to comment on their blog regularly until maybe a couple of weeks ago when I came here. I love them but it was definitely a liberal blog and I became weary of seeing things that I did not agree with.

re: #444 Afrocity
It's not that we are just disbelieving something bad said about the man I was never overly fond of his writings. But I do dislike someone speaking ill of the dead when it was never proven catergorically the courts in Sri Lanka dropped the charges after all 3 of the "boys" who implicated Clarke admitt they made it up. The Mirror(the London newspaper that broke the story citing a video confession) never made good with the video they claimed to have with his admission. Some people are taking his comment to Playboy about Bisexual experiences to mean he admitt to molesting teenage boys. He admit at one point he didn't ask ages but all the men he had relations with were at least of the age of puberty and legal in the country in question.
But if they tried to keep the movie plotted out to physics most stories would be boring. Like 2001.
Suspect you are right. It does seem the real universe is too boring for audiences. However, the irony is that often the fantasy stuff in today's movies is used as deus ex machina and keeps the characters from facing the "human condition" as (old time authors would say.)
It depends on what you are looking for. David Drake is good for the miltary edge in Sci-Fi. He also deals more with the human factor and the science is just to drag the story along when needed. He also has a good knowledge of history and has reworked a few stories into his fiction. John Ringo is also a good military writer, Tom Kratmann (sp?), David Weber, and if you want to look at the silver age there's Niven and Pournelle.
/off the top of my head, but I am sure there are a few more out there as well.

Incidentally, the two male chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus) in THAT particular case didn't mate for life, although they stuck together for six consecutive mating seasons. But they "broke up" a year or two after hatching the foster egg, and one of them paired with a female in a subsequent mating season. (That heterosexual pairing only lasted one season, though, and as far as I've been able to find on the Web, both males have remained bachelors in recent years -- possibly because they're now quite elderly by the standards of their species.)

Still alive but hes gettin up there in years.
His friend Isaac Asimov noted that, "Harlan uses his gifts for colorful and variegated invective on those who irritate him — intrusive fans, obdurate editors, callous publishers, offensive strangers."
Good news! Although I read in the San Jose Murky news he sued, and won, a lawsuit against James Cameron for ripping off his " Soldier of the Future Story" that Cameron ripped off in"Terminator'.
Do you have a palm pilot or other such pda? Baen online has a free library with one or two books in some authors series that I mentioned so you could try before you buy. As well they sell all there books in electronic format that is way cheaper then paperback. Even paying the exchange rate from Canadian to American dollars I am saving money.
But everytime I see Freetoken's avatar it is like kryptonite. How would you like it if I changed my avatar to Nancy Pelosi? Free Token has intelligent commentary but that avatar makes me skim his posts. I don't like Obama the man or the logo.
Fear mongering and other Beck moonbattery aside, most people in America are not prepared for any such problem. I read somewhere that Americans have an average of 2 days worth of food and water.
Every American household should store 2 to 4 weeks worth of food, water, and basic supplies to deal with any disaster. Not necessarily civil unrest, terrorism, or war. I'm just talking about surviving hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, bad snowstorms, out of control wildfires, etc. I think Katrina should have hit that point home to everyone.
What happens the next time a solar flare or coronal mass ejection knocks out half the power in the country for several days?
You fans of counterfatcuals who have not read. " Guns of The South", by Harry Turtledove, do so now! Ignore the PC crap that he trows in there, just read and enjoy. Hint: what if the south had AK 47's.
Probably not likely for a long time since we have have practically zero sunspots for over a year. The possibility still exists, its happened before in the NE and Canada.
re: #499 Consanescerion
Taking as canon the story implicating him and believing rumors on the street isn't right tho. The fact of the matter is charges were dropped he was never tried and the only source that really picked up on hte story was the Mirror. He may or may not have been guilty but I will withhold judging hte man because he was cleared of the charges. Not in a court case thru really good lawyers and lots of money but before it even went to trial the boys were requestioned and admitt to lying. The timing of the story also leads to suspicions. Or do you think it was plausable for the story to break 1 week before he was knighted when he had been celebate for approximately 20 years prior to 1998.
A Republican and a Democrat were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person.
The republican gave the homeless person his business card and told him come to his business for a job. He then took twenty dollars out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person.
The Democrat was very impressed, and when they came to another homeless person, He decided to help. He walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. He then reached into the Republicans pocket and gave him fifty dollars.
It is often never mentioned in the African American community that Malcolm X had homosexual experiences.
I'll bet that wouldn't blow as many African-American minds as...
...wait for it!...
...George Washington Carver.
(There's an obvious joke here about "the scientist who found over 100 different uses for peanu'ss," but I'm not going to sully the thread by making it.)
I am also pretty convinced that that story was fabricated in order to have a nice scandal at hand.
And I know some things about legal systems or the lack and insecurity thereof in third world countries.
My own house guard was arrested only because of a fabricated accusation. Everybody knew and yet he was kept in police custody for more than four weeks until bribes traveled the correct channels.
It leaves you shaken and pretty insecure in that foreign culture.
It appears that Barack Obama's foreign policy team is going to make us pine for the days of the Bush Administration's competency by comparison very soon.
I'm not sure what exactly this story illustrates except there doesn't seem to be anyone home at the White House yet. [.]
...and I wouldn't expect to find anyone occupying the WH for more than a photo-shoot until the 2012 presidential campaign is over which, btw, won't be anytime soon.
talloldman was a deer hunter. He has a 12 gauge shotgun he got from his father that he used for many years. About 20 years ago he had surgery on his chest that made it impossible to use the shotgun, so he bought some kind of magnum.

We have minimal ammo for both, but I think we should have more.
/Lord help me if I have to learn how to use either one "on the job"!
Good luck buying the ammo, in lots of places it's being rationed by the retailers and some of the backlogs from the manufacturers are now going into 2 months.

I think, not sure of the total count...but like 9 trools bit it...Stinky was hitting them right out of the park.
Don't know too much about it. But I think a few were calling out the boss for jumping on Beck. From what I gathered though I think he was right about doing it. If he was screaming end of the world, apocalypse junk he should be held accountable. Stuff like that is only good for the loons on both sides of the fence.

Don't go there, we have already argued this out. It seems strange that the only printed accusation was from that paper. Just the once and nothing since. No charges, no trial, and this was published a week before his knighting.
re: #567 archer50
The Mirror is not a creditable news source. Clarke was subsequentially cleared and charges dropped after the 3 accusers claimed they lied.
I've always wanted to visit there..Came this close to going to the SuperBowl there in 06..Dang it!
Miami is pretty wacky in a lot of ways, but is a nice place for a mid-winter break. And if you hunt around, you can usually find a cheap flight, a long as it's not one of the key holiday weekends.
Condoms? A feller could have purty good time in Vegas.
But seriously, folks... I fully support the idea of getting a shotgun. Ain't nothing like it for home defense, or shit-hitting-fan scenarios. (And by that I don't mean "civil war", more like Katrina-style temporary breakdown in civil order.)
Hey Hoosier, I once referred to you as a male. Was I wrong?

You'll never catch up. I tried. Apparently the survivalists didn't survive. The video had baby deer and kitties so you get a ding up.
Yikes, when the survivalists don't survive you know things have gotten bad. What did they do? And does the fact that I store 3 weeks worth of of water and a pound of canned meat make me a survivalist? and thanks for the ding.re: #539 littleoldlady

Not to mention the Jindal thread as well. I believe the body count may reach double digits. Almost seems as bad as the "Friday Night Massacre" I have heard about.

Off on another topic if I hear 1 more newsie claim the chimp comic was racist or an attempt to encourage an Obama Assassination I'm gonna put my foot thru the TV. Pelosi wrote the bill if anyone is being compared to a chimp it's her. If it's trying to encourage anyone to get shot it's her. Noone said shit when Bush was Chimpified god knows how many times. re: #608 Occasional Reader
Handguns are good the reason for a shotgun is to limit collateral damage tho most handguns are easily capable of penetrating thru a human body and continuing thru an interior wall and killing someone on the other side. High Expantion Jacketed Hollowpoints limit the chances of overpenetration but best bet to limit it is using a shotgun with bird shot.

As the more brittle economies slow & roll downhill, the greater the momentum and accumulation of angst - can't these jerks just shut their pie-holes?
...Yeah ORDER OUT, or have it catered.
Solves that problem.

No worries. We're going to tax our way out of this, no problem.
Or, we could all move to Asia.
...Using a somewhat different definition—those earning $10-100 a day, including in rich countries—an Indian economist, Surjit Bhalla, also found that the middle class’s share of the whole world’s population rose from one-third to over half (57%) between 1990 and 2006. He argues that this is the third middle-class surge since 1800. The first occurred in the 19th century with the creation of the first mass middle class in western Europe (see chart 1). The second, mainly in Western countries, occurred during the baby boom (1950-1980). The current, third one is happening almost entirely in emerging countries. According to Mr Bhalla’s calculations, the number of middle-class people in Asia has overtaken the number in the West for the first time since 1700 (see chart 2). ...
I should talk. We barbecue in all kinds of weather up here in Northeast CT. Snow, rain, sleet, cold, it don't matter. Course it's just me and the wife. And it's just an old Webber Gas Grill, so in reality, it is not REAL barbecuing. I do like watching those shows on Food Channel about the best barbecue joints in America. Too bad we don't have anything like that up here.
Lol reminds me about this new Cop on the beat on the Highway patrol. Nasty accident body was ejected and most of it was there but pieces were missing so the senior officer sends him with a clipboard to locate the other parts and list where they were found. Well he finds the head on the shoulder of the road and has some problems spelling it the senior officer is looking the other way so he kicks it into the median. Lists on report head found on median.

re: #652 aboo-Hoo-Hoo I had heard that assumed I heard deficit when he said budget. After I formed the Budget assumption I figured oh good no new stimulus or bailouts this year.
PEOPLE everywhere are talking about the Great Depression, which followed the October 1929 stock market crash and lasted until the United States entered World War II. It is a vivid story of year upon year of despair.
This Depression narrative, however, is not merely a story about the past: It has started to inform our current expectations.
According to the Reuters-University of Michigan Survey of Consumers earlier this month, nearly two-thirds of consumers expected that the present downturn would last for five more years. President Obama, in his first press conference, evoked the Depression in warning of a “negative spiral” that “becomes difficult for us to get out of” and suggested the possibility of a “lost decade,” as in Japan in the 1990s.
He said Congress needed to pass an economic stimulus package — as it ultimately did — to prevent this calamity.
The attention paid to the Depression story may seem a logical consequence of our economic situation. But the retelling, in fact, is a cause of the current situation — because the Great Depression serves as a model for our expectations, damping what John Maynard Keynes called our “animal spirits,” reducing consumers’ willingness to spend and businesses’ willingness to hire and expand. The Depression narrative could easily end up as a self-fulfilling prophecy. ...

A priest, a rabbi, and a Muslim cleric walked into anywhere
A priest, Rabbi and fiery preacher go fishing..They are in a boat in the middle of the lake when somebody says..We forgot the bait! The priest says no problem, gets out of the boat and walks across the water and gets the bait.. The preacher is freaking out.. The Rabbi goes..we forgot the hooks and gets out of the boat and walks on water to the shore and gets the hooks..
Well the preacher just is floored and can't take it any more..These guys can't be holier than me! So he jumps out of boat and sinks under the water and the priest and Rabbi pull him back into the boat.. But the preacher jumps right back into the lake calling upon his best faith..Still he goes under..Finally as they pulled him back into the boat the Rabbi says to the priest..' So we should tell him about the rocks before he drowns himself?'

Yes, talk of a depression can produce one, I am convinced particularly when the new boss is talking like he wants one.
The New York Times isn't helpful, as per usual.
...Taking over big failed banks will be very difficult politically. But technically it could be easier than many of the elaborate rescues that have been tried and proposed.
On Friday, President Obama’s spokesman tried to calm the markets by reaffirming the administration’s preference for a sound privately owned banking system. We share that preference. But it looks as if the best way to get from here to there is for some of the banks to spend some time in the government’s hands.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Renowned investor George Soros said on Friday the world financial system has effectively disintegrated, adding that there is yet no prospect of a near-term resolution to the crisis.
Soros said the turbulence is actually more severe than during the Great Depression, comparing the current situation to the demise of the Soviet Union.
He said the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September marked a turning point in the functioning of the market system.
"We witnessed the collapse of the financial system," Soros said at a Columbia University dinner. "It was placed on life support, and it's still on life support. There's no sign that we are anywhere near a bottom."...

re: #723 rightside
Yeah that's the part I don't get about it. Unless maybe there are groups on youtube and some videos only available if you belong to the group or something.
A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.
After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done.
The monsignor replied, "When I am worried about getting nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. if I start to get nervous, I take a sip."
So next Sunday he took the monsignor's advice. At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink. He proceeded to talk up a storm.
Upon his return to his office after mass, he found the following note on the door:
1. Sip the Vodka, don't gulp.
2. There are 10 commandments, not 12.
3. There are 12 disciples, not 10.
4. Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.
5. Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.
6. We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the late J. C.
7. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as Daddy, Junior and the Spook.
8. David slew Goliath, he did not kick the shit out of him.
9. When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey, don't say he was stoned off his ass.
10. We do not refer to the cross as the "Big T."
11. When Jesus broke the bread at the Last Supper he said, "Take this and eat it for it is my body." He did not say "Eat me"
12. The Virgin Mary is not called "Mary with the Cherry,"
13. The recommended grace before a meal is not: Rub-A-Dub-Dub thanks for the grub, yeah God.
14. Next Sunday there will be a taffy pulling contest at St. Peter's, not a Peter pulling contest at St. Taffy's!
Or it may be something that Youtube does when they get complaints about the video from the owner. Say some big music group. "Sure you can keep it on Youtube, but no where else."
Well all, be back much later.
On way to Democratic Republic of Massachusetts for second day of Antique Show, we are set up at.
The things we do for our wives...oops better not let her see this
Good morning y'all from a moderate (41 degrees, going up to 48 degrees with heavy rain predicted) but currently bright and sunny Charlotte!
How is everyone doing this morning?
My parents had a cat that would corner dogs in their backyard.
This was kinda funny. Our dog weighs only 12-13 pounds. The cat had to go about 20 lbs.
(I have NO idea what the dog would have done if it actually caught the thing!)
I understand about the expense, though yeah, it's gonna be gorgeous. We have 2 cats and a Lab mix. I love them all but one cat thinks I'm Mommy and has to sit with me when I drink coffee. We had (note the past tense) nice carpet until the pets worked it over. We ripped it out last year and have critter-proof hardwood now.

Currently a brisk pre-dawn 54 here in Phoenix with expected high of 81 with sunny (surprise, surprise) skies expected. It is too early for 80's, no fair

re: #755 J.D. Hi {J.D.}! I hope you're doing well today!
Well it was only one eye, but it is the only eye with which I can read anything at all - been like that since birth. And it was frequently, but not always "irritated" as if I had something in it - but I didn't.
The Optometrist said that one of the upper eyelashes on that eye had been "permanently bent" so that every once in a while it would brush across my eyeball. So he pulled the offending eyelash, charged me $65 and I was outta there!
How are you doing?
re: #758 Desert Dog
Hi there Desert Dog "expected high of 81 with sunny (surprise, surprise) skies expected. It is too early for 80's, no fair".
Uh huh. Listen, get back to us all this August would ya? Especially because it's not the heat it's the humidity, right?
:)
re: #763 {realwest}
That was easy enough! Good thing you didn't go to the emergency room after all!
I'm well, thanks... either going to a golf tournament or going out to hit a few myself... haven't decided yet...
Actually, in August, in addition to the lovely 105-120 temps, we get the extra added bonus of the "monsoonal" patterns that bring afternoon thunderstorms and increased humidity. Not quite on a tropical level, but when the temperature in the shade is 110 and the humidity is over 50%, that really sucks...it's moments like that when everyone who lives here asks themselves...WHY do I live here...

Hey there {aussie} Me and mom are doing ok, thanks for asking! Sorry to hear it's such a cold early morning over there - what is it, about 75?!
Tell ya what, send a photo of yourself to Al Gore and SUGGEST that the two of you might have some "fun" togehter, that way when he shows up you're hot weather will turn to Winter IMMEDIATELY. Then you can say "hey, that was fun, thanks Al!" LOL!
*Smooches* back to you!
Hey, how's Julie doing these days?
re: #761 LindaMarie
Good morning/afternoon/whatever to you! How's life over there these days? What do you hear around the rumor mill about President Obama's intentions out you're way?
Of all the victims of the global financial crisis, Dubai and its neighboring states are receiving little sympathy.
Altogether now... Awww
The oil-rich Persian Gulf emirate, which until recently had been a glitzy boomtown attracting fortune-seekers from across the globe, is reported to be canceling 1,500 work visas every day. Its real-estate market has dropped 30% or more over the past few months.
Their indoor ski slopes have earned these sheikhdoms few friends. Los Angeles Times columnist Rosa Brooks shed no tears that "Dubai may be going down," finding it "hard not to be revolted" by a state that "doesn't really produce anything of value" but is a playground for "cold-eyed Russian oligarchs, coked-out London pop stars and the spoiled princelings of global finance." News reports have been dripping with schadenfreude. Newsweek recently bid "Goodbye, Dubai" on its cover, while Time wondered if the Gulf collapse means "no more Palm Islands?" In response to Dubai's decision to deny a visa to Israeli tennis player Shahar Pe'er, New York Times columnist Harvey Araton gloated, "Just like that, the glitter and promise of Dubai as an emerging international sports center evaporated into the cool desert night."...
re: #771 J.D. Well, I obviously can't speak for ya, but I'd druther play golf myself than watch it being played. By a lot! So if your shoulder's ok and all, why don't you go whack a few yourself?!
It just struck me that the rate of species change must be different depending on the specific environmental conditions. What I don't understand is when the rate is faster and when it is slower. Do you know of any studies on this issue?

LOL! Algore can stay well away from here while we still enjoy a bit of warmth!
Good to see your eye problem was fixed :-)
Thanks for asking about Julie - next month marks the 2nd anniversay of her NOT having a hospital admission, so we're all very happy about that
She's still taking buckets of medications, but they're all working well with no side effects
And I don't miss the drive into town to get to the hospital either :-)
Now the much larger, far more critical task...separation of MfM & State.

I would not say that the "Golden Age" of American Newspapers ended in a whimper, rather it ended in a slow spiraling death of every increasing Moonbattery and left leaning idiocy, similar to a turd spinning round in the toilet before being cast down into the sewer. Newspapers have been someone replaced by technology, no doubt, but they all leaned so far to the left, they slit their own throats as well...I would argue that the entire MSM is guilty of the same "crime"...and, what is truly laughable, is that if you ask one of these media types at a newspaper or TV News Station, they will all still cling to the belief that they are still "impartial and fair journalists".
I know! It's not like I'm even coaching him or anything. I think he's just picking it up from what I listen to, but I did have to give him a high five when I heard it. My liberal ex-wife was not as amused! That made it even more priceless.

Your age? Shoot - that'd be a tournament for youngin's I reckon!
But better to go play than watch! Have fun, that's the most important thing (other than keeping your head down, your "lead" arm straight and making sure you're stance is correct, I mean!)!
Living in an area that is known for booms and busts, I could see Dubai's future a mile away. As that article state, they make nothing, they create nothing. Everyone should have know that you cannot sustain this kind of growth forever

I don't have the links handy, but there have been cases of recent lizards (real ones, not us) on islands actually changing within years. I believe one species is on a Meditrennian island, and the other is in Bermuda. Yes, the greater the stress, the greater the need, the faster the change.
Only what I read on the internet. The only news channels here are BBC and CNN so I watch Animal Planet. One of the problems with that is when it is evening here it is the middle of the night here - and Animal Planets Funnist is not very funny

Mom and I are doing ok, thanks. I didn't receive any e-mail from you - what do you mean "pain issues"? Cripes, not like in '01 I hope!
Good morning, from the snowy north.
Another 8 inches of global warming dumped on my location over the weekend, and it's still coming down. We're currently under whiteout conditions.
Love Python. My favorite bit is the leaves in The Meaning of Life. The first time I saw that I was laughing so hard I couldn't get air into my lungs. Scared my poor mom, she thought I was sobbing. Played it for her and she just howled too...
re: #803 LindaMarie Ah, well then, allow me to fill you in: Obama has ordered 17,000 more combat troops (Army and Marines) into Afghanistan while saying that the war there is too expensive and might have to be scaled back.
So you see, you don't have to get any news channels there to be as confused as are we! LOL!
I do hope that you are doing well.

No, arthritic problems in neck. In regard to email, that's the 6th email this week that's gone missing in transit, thinking it's time to find a new server...:(
A select listing of directions to Kabul resturants.
If they ever repaint the guard houses or more the cement barriers the resturants will go bust.
RED HOT & SIZZLIN'
Location: Microyan; Best bet the first time is to go with someone who's been there. But if you must, come from Wazir on the main road through Massoud circle, straight through the Jalalabad road circle and come across the river. Take the first right and go down until the end of the Russian apartment buildings on your left. Make a left at the new shopping center with the pizza place on the corner. Make a left at the next traffic circle. Slow down. The first gate on the right will have a red chili pepper hanging up on a pole. That's it. Good luck.
SHANDIZ
Location: Wazir Akbar Khan; Pakistan Embassy Street, down before the barricades on the left
SAMARQAND
Location: Qala Musa; Turn right at Charyi Haji Yakub, go down the street past the birdcage then make the first left. Make the first right and it's down a block on the right. Big grey gate.
CORNER PIZZERIA
Location: Wazir Akbar Khan; Swing around main circle and put The Grill on your right, head down the barricaded street to almost the end. You'll see big misspelled banners showing you the way.
GANDAMACK
Location: Shar-e Now; Between DHL and the Mustafa across the street from the secret police office.
POPOLANO
Location: Shar-e Now; Toilet Street between Charyi Ansari and Ministry of Interior Street
LE BISTRO
Location: Shar-e Now. Behind Ministry of Interior, on the street parallel to Chicken Street. Coming down from the Kabul City Center with the Park on your left, make a right on the street at the end of the park, across from the gas station, then make the next left. If you survive the ride down this street for a long block you'll see the sign for Le Bistro hanging at the corner where you'll make the right turn, then the restaurant is on your right.
No building or house numbers. No post office service either.
re: #816 Dustyvet Whew, not that arthiritic neck pain is fun or anything, but it coulda been worse my friend. Hey, why doncha copy the e-mail from your "sent" files and try sending it again (and then call your e-mail carrier - I hope for your sake it's not Earthlink - and either get the issue resolved or get a new e-mail server!)?
Do you have any "happy pills" to help you with the neck pain?
I watch animal planet in my bathroom...where the mighty litter kicker lurks...:) If I don't sweep up after the little sod, my bathroom floor becomes a gravel drive way.
re: #817 aussiemagpie
Hey I'm kinda surprised he even invited you to the wedding...and more surprised that you're going!
Any excuse for new shoes, eh?! LOL!

I got cut off those:( I was issued a Tens Unit by the VA, and acetaminophen.

What? Whatever could go wrong with that "truce"?!?
IIRC, the swat area has NEVER been controlled by anyone other than warlords in the first place, and everyone knows how much you can trust a warlord, right?

I remember when braking a ceasefire was called a violation. You know penalty flags all over the place...5 yard penaltys doe roughing the VC.
Obama's instinct seems to be to surround himself with politicians who are already politically crippled. He does not seem to trust honest people. By surrounding himself with crippled politicians he knows they will never raise their voices no matter what he does because they're just like he is, and he knows he doesn't need much of a reason to throw them away, and will look like a hero when he does.
I look forward to the day when they put Obama under oath and ask him anything! Ask him what time it is. He'll lie.
The Constitution defines impeachment at the federal level and limits impeachment to "The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States" who may only be impeached and removed for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors".

"Dark Knight was robbed, man" . Hard to imagine why so many newspapers are failing.

Whoa - electrical stimulation to where - your neck?! Isn't that sorta, ah, risky business for you? I mean there are OTHER forms of pain medication than Tylenol or Tens Units, even if the VA hasn't heard about 'em yet!
re: #845 opnion
Good morning opnion! Say, why is it that Holder's comments remind me SO MUCH of Jimmy Carter's Maliasse Speech?
I mean, it's at least unseemly to claim that a nation which has a Black President and a Black Attorney General is full of cowardice when it comes to racial issues, doncha think?

Good morning right back at ya Real. Holder exhibits the attitude that nothing will ever be good enough. The election of a Black President is not good enough, four decades of tremendously expensive entitlement & set aside programs, not good enouigh.
It is becuse of people like Holder that there can't be an honest discussion about race. If you start form any position other than WHite Guilt, that is by definition racist to people like Holder.

LOL.
Well, I'm glad you are busy and I'm glad to see/hear from you any time.
Sooo glad you and mom are doing okay. As you've probably noticed, my emails have even started to slack off some. Miss it.
I get here what little I can to catch up on the real news, without having to slog thru the garbage to find out what's really going on.
Right now, I'm looking for a good deal on a new laptop for Mr. GBy. His 4-yo Compaq 17" POS has totally crashed - kablooey. Not even enough time to give it CPR for a partial rescue. LOL
Ed Rendell is on FNC with Chris Wallace right now. He is defending the Obama stimuluis plan, not because it's all that good, but because it's 'Better than what Bush did."
Man, the Libs miss Viet Nam & Bush.
re: #871 opnion
"It is becuse of people like Holder that there can't be an honest discussion about race. If you start form any position other than WHite Guilt, that is by definition racist to people like Holder."
Amen to that one. I'd still like to ask Obama (well, I'd like to ask him a lot of things, but this in particular) when is the US going to cut all ties with African and Arab states that currently still permit slavery? Even just as a "show" that we find this slavery reprehensible?
Stock market will tank again Wed. Reason, Obama is speaking to a joint meeting of congress Tues. night. Sell, or but, or don't do anything, it doesn't matter. Financial advice from It Doesn't Matter Financial Services.
Kerry turned the letter over to the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem on Friday, saying he was unaware that it was from Hamas until hearing about the letter in media reports,
U.S. officials in Jerusalem are outraged at the United Nations Relief and Works agency for apparently handing the letter off to Kerry.
The Hamas official who wrote the letter confirmed to FOX News that he wrote Obama personally, asking him not to be biased toward Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians and to act fairly. He also said Hamas is ready to talk directly to a new American administration.
Kerry's still completely clueless. And the UN is still in bed with the terrorists.
BEIJING (Reuters) - A blast in a coal mine killed 74 miners in China's Shanxi province on Sunday and scores more were rescued after being trapped underground for hours, Xinhua news agency reported.
[snip]
The gas explosion happened the day after senior provincial officials held a conference about mine safety, in which they pledged to try to put an end to deadly mining accidents.
So glad to hear the good news about Julie. You and your family deserve all the good things in life.
/still missing the good ol' days of the DDT? I do. LOL
{gettinby} G'day!
Yes the good old days...and I can't believe that sometimes I used to stay up ALL night posting on LGF and then go to work!
Loved those days *sigh*
People move on and others get the stick I suppose...but it's so good to see some of us oldies still hanging around - though it has been lovely meeting new lizards too :-)
Thanks for thinking about Julie too, it''s now hard to imagine that life of going to hospital every evening, then posting here, sleeping for a bit, working...
The support from all my LGF friends really helped me :-)
re: #876 gettinby
Well shoot - with prices dropping like a rock, y'all ought to be able to get a GREAT laptop for him. I'd check out HP if I were you - I love, LOVE my new desktop PC made by them. IF y'all have a Best Buy somewhere near you, and can find some time, head on over and check 'em out - usually good pricing and great selection!

That would be an excellent question, but do you think that he would answer it directly? I think that he would stutter & stammer & go into some obfuscation about an inter-dependent world, blah , blah.
Old-fashioned types might think that those Britons - okay, make that "Britons" - helping to manufacture bombs for the Taliban are engaged in an act of treason. But, as a current court case in Quebec helps clarify, giving support to the Queen's enemies in their attempts to kill your compatriots is now just another vibrant, colorful manifestation of cultural diversity.
As the International Free Press Society notes, Said Namouh is on trial up north for aiding and abetting terrorism. The Crown charges that Mr Namouh distributed jihadist snuff videos, offered advice on bomb-making, volunteered his expertise for a planned truck bombing, and threatened governnments (including Canada's) with troops in Afghanistan. Defense counsel René Duvall doesn't deny any of this, but says his client's enthusiasm for violent jihad is protected on grounds of freedom of religion and (mirthless chuckle from your humble typist) Canadians' cherished right to freedom of expression. As Maître Duvall put it outside the court, "Where do you draw the line?"
In fact, the line seems to be pretty clear: If a jihadist says he wants to kill Canadian troops, he's just exercising his right to freedom of religion. If I quote what he said in Canada's biggest-selling news weekly, we'll be charged with "flagrant Islamophobia" and hauled up in court. ...
That would be an excellent question, but do you think that he would answer it directly? I think that he would stutter & stammer & go into some obfuscation about an inter-dependent world, blah , blah.
don't let him...pin his ass to the floor and demand a straight answer...right...pass the green cheese
Last month, during the transition between the Bush and Obama Administrations, there was a major homeland security "war game." For two-and-a half hours on a day in mid-January, senior federal officials reacted to a series of simulated, terrorist bombings across the country, responding to medical needs, managing the investigative process and ensuring that protective forces were deployed.
The exercise was unique for a couple of reasons. First, the Bush team allowed their Obama counterparts to "sit in" on the exercise and ask questions, giving them a foundation for their own drills and policies in the future. Secondly, the war game scenario was based on a familiar threat, one that remains at the forefront of homeland security concerns. ..., the half-day exercise condensed two days of IED attacks, targeting economic and transportation centers across America.
I'm a huge fan of the Holy Grail and much of Life of Brian, especially the stoning scene "All I said was this halibut was good enough for Jehovah" or something along those lines. In skits nothing beats the Dead Parrot, paying for an argument, vikings eating spam "but I don't like spam!," and the spanish inquisition. I don't know why but the fish slapping dance always gives me a good chuckle. I have a movie poster framed of the crucifixion scene at the end of Life of Brian on my living room wall. It shows Graham Chapman with his jeans around his ankles and Eric Idle sporting a pair of converse.
don't let him...pin his ass to the floor and demand a straight answer...right...pass the green cheese
That could only happen In a one & one interview. At press conferences, Obama does not allow follow up questions.
Te only way that it could work is if the media conspired to ask follow up's for each other.
Good morning Walter! "It Doesn't Matter Financial Services" at last, truth in advertising!
:)
I want to throw the radio out the window when I hear the ads from the financial services companies. These jerks will keep on and on with their fucking touting this or that way to make a shitload of bucks while the damn ship is sinking all around them.
Really, financial advisors in my world are no better than used car salesmen.
Good point but... given the NOI actively supports the genocidal jihad in Sudan, in which arabs are enslaving blacks, one cannot expect any moral consistency from the Obama admin on this issue.
re: #893 opnionWell, yeah. I suppose I shoulda added "I'd like to ask Obama, in completer privacy, one on one..."
But I suspect he's programmed to respond to questions like that - still and all, I am programmed to break through that programming (though I suspect the USSS would take a dim view of me grabbing him by the shirt and shaking him when I asked!).

My favorite scene now is the "Help, I'm being oppressed" one.
Jesus did, sir. I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! "You're cured, mate." Bloody do-gooder.
pretty concise...I'm so overstimulated I can barely keep up...I did not know FM was fines by the SEC...etc etc etc...
All sorts of democrats milked Freddie Mac. Ironically - primarily becasue Freddie Mac was left unchecked without the holy grail of democrat drum beat "regulations". The Democrats shouted DO NOT REGULATE FREDDIE AND FANNIE - All while they happily received in millions in payments.
and the Democrats demand to regulate every other aspect of the free market. Just don't regulate the government entities where democrats stand the most to gain financially.
Matthias: Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah".
[Everyone gasps]
Jewish Official: You're only making it worse for yourself!
Matthias: Making it worse? How can it be worse? Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!
Jewish Official: I'm warning you! If you say "Jehovah" one more time (gets hit with rock) RIGHT! Who did that? Come on, who did it?
Stoners: She did! She did! (suddenly speaking as men) He! He did! He!
Jewish Official: Was it you?
Stoner: Yes.
Jewish Official: Right...
Stoner: Well you did say "Jehovah. "
[Crowd throws rocks at the stoner]
Jewish Official: STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! STOP IT! All right, no one is to stone _anyone_ until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "Jehovah. "
[Crowd stones the Jewish Official to death]
My favorite scene now is the "Help, I'm being oppressed" one.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Yes, that is a hilarious scene. I am partial to the Black Knight. "come back here, I will bite your legs off. Coward!"
During that dreadful time when Julie was in and out of hospital, I really loved being on LGF - it was a real relief to be part of such great group of people and who helped me stay sane :-)
This so called private visit of Schröder in Iran to meet also with Mahmud Ahmadinedschad is highly political. As Iran's President is currently fighting for his reelection and Schröder's visit could nicely benefit this creep. The outrage in the German politics and media circle is big, yet the German Foreign ministry is keeping silent.
This is the very same Ex-Chancellor Schröders who called Vladimir Putin a 'flawless' democrat and who went to work for the Russian energy giant Gazprom after not being reelected.

Judith: [on Stan's desire to be a mother] Here! I've got an idea: Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb - which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' - but that he can have the *right* to have babies.
Francis: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother... sister, sorry.
Reg: What's the *point*?
Francis: What?
Reg: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies, when he can't have babies?
Francis: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
Reg: It's symbolic of his struggle against reality.
Good morning Lizards. This weekend we hosted a most inspiring guest for Shabbat. An Israeli gentleman whose wife, 21 years ago, gave birth to triplets (natural, not IVF induced). Two of the babies were healthy, but the third had cerebral palsy. This man has dedicated the rest of his life to seeking the best treatment for cerebral palsy patients in Israel. He has already established a special hospital in Jerusalem, and invites specialists from all over the world. Patients receive treatment, therapy, and for children from large families, there is daycare with dedicated therapists on site 24/7.
The purpose is to find the best and most up-to-date treatment for this disability, and enable patients to live happy, fulfilled and independent lives.
...the half-day exercise condensed two days of IED attacks, targeting economic and transportation centers across anything not already destroyed by the President's New Lousy Deal in America.
re: #903 Kenneth
Good morning Kenneth! I know the precise location of the BEST target for Al-Q or any other terrorist organization, but I won't say it out here - not because I think I'm so much smarter than they are, but because I truly am afraid that an attack with a WMD (even just a dirty bomb) would wreack havoc here and don't want to give all those "doctors" any ideas.
How are you today? How's the family doing?
Spectator I: I think it was "Blessed are the cheesemakers".
Mrs. Gregory: Aha, what's so special about the cheesemakers?
Gregory: Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.
Well, yeah.
Don't worry about the Secret Service. We will set up a Real West Defense Fund. We'll take to the streets. We will speak truth to power baby! And when you get out of the joint in, oh I don't know five years we'll have a party.
re: #905 3 wood
Hey, good morning my friend, I'm doing ok thanks. How about you?
Oh and I meant to e-mail you, but if you should meet up with that fella we've discussed, could ya please ask him, again, to e-mail me?
The FNC panel is discussing Holder's comments now.
As usual Juan Williams is being honest. He is condemning Holder & speculating that he will get hate mail, calling him a Tom, etc.
"In the center of our being is a point of nothingness
which is untouched by sin and illusion,
a point of pure truth,
a point or spark which belongs entirely to God,
which is never at our disposal,
from which God disposes of our lives,
which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind,
or the brutalities of our own will.
This little point of pure nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us.
It is like a pure diamond, blazing with the invisible light of heaven.
It is in everybody, and if we could see it
we would see these billions of points of light
coming together in the face and blaze of a sun
that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish
completely.
I have no program for this seeing.
It is only given.
You are wise not to say it. There was a report several weeks ago about a suspected Hexbollah cell scoping Jewish sites in Toronto. Sooner or later something horrible will happen. A friend of mine was in Mumbai last week. he stayed at the big hotel where the attacks occurred and had a tour of some of the damaged sections. He said the amount of damage was incredible.
Thanks for asking, the family is doing fine. I hope you're doing all right today.
In financial news folks, the whole focus this week will revolve around the "toxic assets". The market as a whole has gotten tired of waiting on the Obama Administration to deal with these in a way that makes sense. Until the "toxic assets" are dealt with, the market will assume that the banking system is going to be nationalized, which means that share holder equity will go to zero, so financial stocks will drop to near zero and stay there unless and until Geithner finds a clue.

They might lose their White House credentials If they start badgering & keep in mind the Media Press corps with maybe the exception of Major Garret have a crush on Obama.
It is hard for the pressers to ask any tough questions much less follow up when they are so busy fellating "The One".
What about the focus on Obama's "balanced budget" plan, which news of some of the plan has leaked out this weekend.
I read what info was available and it seems to me that first, he is trying to break successful private business by increasing taxes on them and second, ruin thing for those who are making larger salaries by increasing their tax burden.
So, you make it harder for business to do business, so they fail, so the government takes them over and too hell with the upper middle class, let's kick them down to the level of many others and make them dependent on the government.
In my opinion, since Obama is going right ahead with his promise to "distribute the wealth," there is no stopping the fall of our whole economy.
Hi Geepers. Well, hanging in there. Getting up to speed in the new job, trying to keep a close eye on the market melt down, doing some things in music, started working out hard (running and weight lifting) to get in better shape, like that.
We played a coffee house Friday night that went pretty well. One of the groups after us had apparently never practiced together before, they played their numbers reading sheet music, and the guitarist forgot his capo and had to run off stage and keep everybody waiting while he dug around in his case for the item. So it was not all that hard to look good by comparison.
Referring to the quote heading the thread... Sir Clarke was never too concerned about his Sri Lankan houseboys
This is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. It's a baseless rumor promoted by religious fanatics who wanted to smear Arthur C. Clarke because of his powerful criticisms of religion.
I'm deleting your comments. I see what you're doing, and I'm not going to allow LGF to be used to spread this ugly smear. Post this again and I will remove your account.

... The latest noise from the administration is that the president has ordered a "thorough review of policy on Iran."
Did you think Obama had already reviewed a policy that he had vehemently condemned and opposed? Wrong: As in many other cases, he opposed Bush policy without bothering to study and understand it. ...
I don't think Obama has any intention of even trying to balance the budget. He is going to spend, spend, and then spend some more.
I don't believe a word of what he said about that.
I'm just guessing here, but I think he now realizes the damage that he did to the market by screaming "catastrophe" for 3 weeks, and is now trying to talk the market back. Too late.
With the way inflation will have to skyrocket (M2 is growing by 13%) there is no way they can cut the deficit, except by inflating the debt.
In financial news folks, the whole focus this week will revolve around the "toxic assets". Until the "toxic assets" are dealt with, the market will assume that the banking system is going to be nationalized, which means that share holder equity will go to zero, so financial stocks will drop to near zero and stay there unless and until Geithner finds a clue.
In all fairness, Paulson and Bernanke under Bush, and now Geitner and Bernanke under Obama, have done enough that it probably should have reassured the markets and ameliorated the crisis. As perhaps it has, because we really have been walking the edge of the abyss since September, if not since last February when Bear Stearns first went down. It's much the same idiocy that caused the problem in the first place, that maintains the problem today.
OTOH, after all, the entire financial system is still toxic, and cleaning up a few trillion in mortage assets WILL NOT FIX IT. Leverage is still out there, CDS is worse then CDO, and consumer spending is still scared and not inflated by real estate bubble equity, and remains scared even when the financial titans are healthy.
The point being, I don't particularly blame Geithner nor Obama, they didn't break it, and they may not be in the position to fix it that the simpleminded libs and MSM may make out. One could argue that it's a better thing if they don't try, at least don't try too hard.
I don't think Obama has any intention of even trying to balance the budget. He is going to spend, spend, and then spend some more.

So, this is going to tank? Like I have said before, I know nothing about this except what my common sense tells me. Common sense tells me there is no way to stop what he is doing, going to do until HE stops it, or backs off his policies.
Since he has control of the house and congress, short of his own party turning against him, the ride is all downhill from here.
This is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. It's a baseless rumor promoted by religious fanatics who wanted to smear Arthur C. Clarke because of his powerful criticisms of religion.

Mr. Clarke was a true gentleman. He showed up at an embassy reception is Columbo, Sri Lanka where my ship had stopped for a port call. Not to mention the man could WRITE!
Might I also suggest for blessing and protection over all of us during these times.
And--am I'm sure to catch a little fire for this one--for a blessing on the POTUS and his cabinet for their safety, protection, and that they be given wisdom and discernment in their decisions concerning their governance.
Why don't you asshats cut Charles a break? It is Sunday morning and he's having to run around swatting moonbats. Sheesh.
Said mornin' all on the previous thread, so, mornin' all.
Why should you catch fire for that desire? Just because we don't like or trust them doesn't mean we can't desire that they end up doing what needs to be done, and done well.
And--am I'm sure to catch a little fire for this one--for a blessing on the POTUS and his cabinet for their safety, protection, and that they be given wisdom and discernment in their decisions concerning their governance.
As much as I disagree (to put it mildly) with The One, that is an entirely appropriate wish.
Might I also suggest for blessing and protection over all of us during these times.
And--am I'm sure to catch a little fire for this one--for a blessing on the POTUS and his cabinet for their safety, protection, and that they be given wisdom and discernment in their decisions concerning their governance.
I will revise "our country going forward" accordingly. Thanks for the suggestion.

I do not agree with their policies, but I wish no harm on them. Okay, I take part of that back, Biden getting pied would be funny. But it would scare the hell out of the Secret Service, so that's right out.
Jindal is on Meet the Press right now. I like the guy, but I wish that he was more rational about his religious beliefs, or at least keep them to himself.
(OT re "blue nic")
BTW, I did see your last LOLcat last night, about "did you let the cat in?"
It was an absolute SCREAMER! One of the best I've ever seen.
I don't think the folks who would rather see him fail, the "he's not my president" types have not been fully weeded out of here.
As for the phantom down-dingers--if you are going to down ding some one-have the courtesy of posting a comment as to why you disagree with someone. After all, how are we to learn if all you say, essentially, is that we are wrong, and nothing more.
I guess one has to define what they mean by "tank". Do I think the stock market will go to zero? No. There is intrinsic value to many of these stocks.
But I think we will lose another 20% of value off the Dow and the S&P until the bear market stops, and then it will be a long climb back.
As I've said several times before, there are several obvious moves that can be made to short cut to a recovery and stop the bleeding. Drop "mark to market" and go back to discounted cash flows, which is what was used before mark to market was established about 15 years ago. Reinstall the "uptick" rule and enforce the ban against naked short selling, to stop the outrageously destructive short selling that is going on. Unwind the toxic assets and deal with the underlying mortgages themselves. Most of those loans will end up working out to be good deals.
The fact is these moves are becoming more and more clearly obvious to the trading public and not just the obscure discussion of technical economic nerds like me. And the reality that the Obama Administration does nothing is leaving the market to conclude that we have idiots in charge of the government now.
*snort*
This is my absolute favorite MP skit. Kills me every time! :D
Want to see Obabma fail? Only on his socialist agenda, rationing of health care, failed taxation policies, and his crappy "I won so STFU" attitude. That's pretty much his entire plan for the country.
Marx knew all about labor & the proletariat? He never did an honest day of work in his life.
Remind you of anyone else ... you know like someone millions of slobbering idiots voted into the White House ...did he ever even deliver pizza while in school? ... did he ever have a part-time job? Besides community organizer and a short time at the law firm representing ACORN, et al what job has he ever had? ...
Look for original thoughts--not GOP talking points.
Also, one of Jindal's bitches is that literally NADA of the stimulus money is going for Katrina relief.
He's covering the issue about Katrina now. I really have not heard talking points from Jindal this morning. He just is better prepared to discuss economic issues than Gregory is.

Not a single question from Gregory on Jindal's creationism, or his other extreme social con positions.
This is a precursor of what we're going to see. The MSM and the left would love it if Jindal is the GOP nominee in 2012, because he will lose. So they're going to ignore all the damaging issues until it's time to bring them up.

really hope it doesn't come to pass.
Well, they better come armed with something more than the LITTLE BLUE OBAMA HANDBOOK ...cuz I ain't going quietly ...I am just praying he is a one term occupant of the White House ...
Well, I'm late to the thread, but Charles, I might think twice before taking advice from Arthur C. Clarke on perversions...
He was something of an expert on the subject, though.
Excuse me, Cognito, but those stories are complete bullshit. And if you post them here I'll block your account. I'm not going to allow LGF to be used as a method to spread baseless smears.

His budget is gonna wreck a lot more. He wants to cut the deficeit by raising taxes on business and the 'rich' and gut the military.
The military still hasn't recovered from either Carter or Clinton. Clinton did much more to weaken our military by misapplying the 'peace dividend' to perpetual government handout programs. The Republicans could run just about anyone and wind if Obama does as poorly as president that I think he will.

I have to agree with Steve. Poorly is only an adjective that makes sense if you are concerned with capitalism. A good percentage of the people that voted for Obama WANT SOCIALISM, and they understand what it is. I know, I talk to a lot of them all the time.
So, Obama is doing just what he promised, just what they want and he's not doing "poorly" as far as they are concerned.
I would say he's doing a grand job, doing exactly what he told the country he is going to do.
When will the MSM remind us that Obama is a rabid socialist?
when he turns and bites the hand that feeds him...I am not optimistic that will happen soon enough altho it could I guess...the donks are out for the jugular this time and the GOP is snoozing along covering their asses...look to the House for any meaningful resistance...obviously
Florida Governor Charlie Cris is on with David Gregory right now.
He is undercutting the Republicans & lauduing Obama's stimulus plan.
This is the same guy who endorsed McCain one week before the Florida Primary, while McCain was spreading the lie that Romney supported a time table for withdrawl fro Iraq.

You may have a point, but the current topic is the economy and the stimulus. Besides, if Gregory had gone on to the attack, Jindal might have come off the better for it. I don't think it was the right moment for such a series of questions.
That being said, I've just finished "American Creation" by Joseph Ellis. He has a less than flattering take on Thomas Jefferson and the views of the man. Jefferson came across on this book as a "true believer" in his revolutionary republican views, especially concerning France. Jefferson also had a facility for ignoring inconvenient facts--such as the Reign of Terror--which did not fit within his world view. His biggest paradox was the he did not believe that the chief executive had the constitutional powers previously exercised by his predecessors--but he exercised those very powers and more while he was President.
My point, though, and this is still the germ of an hypothesis, is that have a "true believer" in high office is not so dangerous as some people fear. The system itself will inhibit them from governing from their personal beliefs and compel them to govern under the law. The concerns about Jindal, and others like him, while valid and unsettling, would not be a "deal breaker" as he would not be able to implement anything like that on a national level--and frankly, I don't think what has been done in this vein on the state level would withstand a Constitutional challenge.
---and I did this all on one cup of coffee (but it was a large cup)
BTW--I plan to read some more on Jefferson--but there are a few other books in my reading list ahead of that.
Actually I talk to people on the left who don't want socialism. They actually admit that socialism is not fair. They say the mortgage bailout isn't fair. But they refuse to associate our great leap towards socialism with Obama. The still blindly worship Obama.

Yes, he does sound like it. The Dem's trot ouit slogans & then say, "well, it's not perfect, but it's better than nothing." Then clean it up, get the junk out of it. Doing nothing would be better than this bill.
Yes...and no. A lot of people get all of their information from the alphabet networks, and the coverage of the election was surreal. I don't watch TV much (and TV news not at all) but ended up in an ER a few weeks before the election. I switched back and forth from morning "news" show to morning "news" show, and was stunned by the coverage...happy, smiley faces and body language while they were raving over Obama and the latest huge lead in the polls, etc.
It was classic brainwashing, and so blatant. I don't know if I would have noticed it if I was a regular viewer...
This may be a race issue for me. But, I never assume that any person of color is gay. Johnny Mathis, obviously gay. Never occurred to me he might be. You have to be RuPaul gay for me to notice it.
Jefferson was brilliant, but his myopic view toward the savagery of the French Revolution drove John Adams crazy. Jefferson was also a Linertine & very poor with money management. John Adams had to give Jefferson a Stimulus bail out.

Yet it is interesting, is it not, that - although lots of others helped with it - the American ideal of let the governed do the governing was Thomas Jeffersons' idea and indeed he pushed, pulled, bullied and cajoled the members of the assemblage in Philadelphia in July of 1776 to undertake what would surely be an extremely difficult war to win our independence from Great Britain so as to implement the idea that the governed should do the governing.
And won unanimous support for that idea. And it was an idea that had NEVER been tried before in the history of the world (and no, Greece and Rome were not "democracies" in the sense that we know that term).

The most revealing thing about Jefferson was his views on race. According to Ellis, and other sources, he had a very low opinion of blacks--free or otherwise. He knew slavery was wrong, but he, despite his political creativity, could not fashion a solution. He did not want emancipation as he was convinced blacks and whites could not live together--even after the Louisiana Purchase and he saw how free blacks and whites lived side-by -side in New Orleans. He wanted them expelled to the West Indies or somehow repatriated to Africa.
re: #1124 calcajun
With respect sir, that's complete bullshit. The first draft of the Declaration of Independence had a paragraph which provided that slavery would be illegal in the United States of America. Jefferson wrote that passage and it was stricken by the only real editor of the Declaration, Benjamin Franklin who knew the Souther Colonies would never get on board with that provision in the Declaration and that independence from Great Britain would never be won without the support of the Southern Colonies/States.

No it is not--and you did not read what I wrote. He had no solution to slavery either in 1776, or during his tenure as secretary of state, as vice-president or as president. He is the man who said of slavery, "We have the wolf by the ears; we don't like it, but we dare not let it go."
You also miss the hypocrisy of the man. It was he and Madison that created the two-party system, ostensibly as a reaction to the growth of the strong federal government. Outwardly, they saw the federal government (which Madison basically fathered) as a potential replacement for Parliament--against which they had fought a war of independence. Inwardly, they saw he example of the Whiskey Rebellion where a small segment of the population was adversely affected by act of Congress--and had to take it. Remember, Jefferson and Madison were tidewater planters--the ruling elite of the country and they saw the federal government as a potential threat to the economic lifeblood of Virginia and the south. In other words, he and Madison screamed against the evils of the federal government with the direct result that slavery was not only preserved, but spread westward.
So, if Jefferson was such a strident anti-slavery proponent, then his actions through his life suggest otherwise. In fact he was the creator of the political party responsible for the perpetuation of the institution for another half-century.

Not quite right. John Adams was the one who did the bullying. The whole issue of whether to move for independence had been settled in late May 1776. Jefferson was not the primary mover and shaker here. He was (by his later admission) the junior partner to Adams.
I thought that stress would be fundamental, but I don't know what causes stress. Is it scarcity of food or well-adapted predators?
My thought process arose when seeing a film about the barrier reef. If a species needed to evolve because predators were well adapted, to what niche could the species evolve since so many were already taken?
re: #1126 calcajun
Well, regardless of what you may have read about Jefferson, and especially with regard to the Declaration, he did write it and Ben Franklin was the only editor - read any decent history of Franklin and of Jefferson regarding this. I've seen the first draft in Jefferson's own handwriting and the "X"ing out of that paragraph (and some other minor changes) by Franklin.
As to the issue of slavery, it is a matter of court record that Jefferson, on three different occasions, tired to set his slaves free, but was blocked by a court from doing so, as the slaves were valuable property and Jefferson's creditors asked the court to prevent Jefferson from freeing his own slaves. Again, I have seen photocopies of those court records.
Finally, after being President, Jefferson was elected to the House of Burgess of the Commonwealth of Virginia for, iirc, 7 consecutive terms and in each of those terms he introduced legislation that would have either freed existing slaves or would have prohibited adding slaves to the State of Virginia and he lost each and every one of those legislative fights.
And, prior to their retirement as active politicians, Jefferson and Adams were fierce political opponents.
After they both retired, they commenced a daily correspondence with each other, the reading of which is truly magnificent to behold. Two genuine intellectual giants trading ideas about nearly everything under the sun.
Indeed, they both died on July 4th, 1826 and although Jefferson died first, the news didn't reach Adams who, on his deathbed, said "Thank God Jefferson still lives".
Methinks you need to read some more history on both of those men, and try to read some non-revisionist history about them as well.
(BTW -Full disclosure here: I wrote a research paper on the roll of Jefferson and his adversarial relationship with Adams as a history honors undergraduate paper and on the strength of that research paper and my grades, etc. was accepted to - TA DA - the University of Virginia's accelerated PhD program in American History. Alas, I felt my obligation to serve in the Army during Vietnam superseded that wonderful offer - as did, BTW, my draft board, and went off to Vietnam).
Charles's complaint about down-dingers who have never posted got me to thinking.
The affinity matrixA defined by Aij = The aggregate number of dings user i has given user j contains a great deal of information about factions among lizards, and the degree of these factions' antagonisms or affinities toward each other. The matrix A is a sort of adjacency matrix, but of course it need not be symmetric or even non-negative. There is a great deal of literature on clustering symmetric non-negative matrices, and even some on general non-negative matices, but there is not much I could find on the case where A can have negative weights. But here is one: an expository paper, apparently authored by a sociologist, consequently with less rigor than one might desire. Nevertheless, it is food for thought.
One can imagine a nice graphical presentation of the state of lizard factionalism.
The first draft of the Declaration of Independence had a paragraph which provided that slavery would be illegal in the United States of America.
If it was, it was not written by anyone named Jefferson. I have looked this AM and have not found any draft online which contains any specific language proscribing slavery, e.g.; [Link: www.duke.edu...] If you know of one, please provide the cite.
If it is one found among Jefferson's later letters and papers, keep in mind a fact about the man--he had a penchant about re-writing his history. Case in point; he tried in vain to alter his views that the French Revolution would be bloodless.
I am not trying to denigrate the man. His place in our history is a prominent one. His was a brilliant mind. The marks he left on this country--both good and bad--are still felt to this day. But, we should never elevate the men of the founding generation to the level of demi-gods. They were human, susceptible to any human foible. And, the most important lesson one can learn from history is that failures and shortcomings of prior generations sometimes yield the most beneficial lessons.
Charles's complaint about down-dingers who have never posted got me to thinking.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite.
It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system -- ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society. -- Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

re: #1132 calcajun
Regretfully, the link you cited to Duke is incorrect. While I have seen this draft, the only digitalized one I can find is a hard to read, tiny copy at Wikipedia.
For some reason, The University of Virginia - founded, btw, by Thomas Jefferson and others as the first non-religious college or university in the Nation - Internet pages are also unavailable today.
In any event - reading the entire wiki entry is enlightening - perhaps for both of us! and you can enlarge the tiny copy of the draft Declaration on that page: [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
Though, unless your eyesight is better than mine, it's still hard to read!
If you can get "through" to the U of Va website, you can navigate your way to find the copy in larger size.
Regretfully, again, when I was in college there were no computers (yes, I really am that old!) and the documents I saw where at the U.S. Library of Congress (which I THOUGHT had digitized [digitalized?] those documents)and at the Univeristy of Virgina, but I can't seem to find them now, damnit.
The U of Va site is a better site for Jefferson information (natch!) and it contains copies of those court orders I mentioned which forbade Jefferson from freeing his slaves.
And I am aware of the dangers of elevating mortals to the status of demi-gods. But I don't think it an overstatement to say that without Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (and of course James Madison, a protege of Jefferson) we would not have The United States of America.
And some publisher HAS published those letters between Jefferson and Adams and if you can find a copy it's well worth buying and reading - they really were world-class intellects.
Would LOVE to stay and discuss this some more, but alas my lunch and cancer med's await.
Thanks for an interesting discussion of these men and their works.
Those charges were reported in a newspaper, and perhaps you saw a report on that, but he has always denied them flat out.
“Having always had a particular dislike of paedophiles, few charges can be more revolting to me than to be classed as one. The allegations are wholly denied. My conscience is perfectly clear.”
And Charles has asked twice now that people stop posting that crap here.

Those charges against Arthur C. Clarke are false, and I'm going to delete any comments saying otherwise. It's not right to smear Clarke like this, and it's not going to happen at my website.

My thought process arose when seeing a film about the barrier reef. If a species needed to evolve because predators were well adapted, to what niche could the species evolve since so many were already taken?
It just struck me that the rate of species change must be different depending on the specific environmental conditions. What I don't understand is when the rate is faster and when it is slower. Do you know of any studies on this issue?
Some genomes have a more rapid intrinsic mutational rate than others (the tuatara, for instance). Sometimes, stress can affect a species' mutational rate, although not which mutations do or do not occur. Sometimes, species cannot successfully evolve in response to changing environmental conditions, and they become extinct. In fact more than 99% of all species that have existed in terrestrial history exist no longer.
