Video: Bum Bum Bum

Some music videos are so incredibly awful that they wrap around, and become works of genius. I’m not sure this one quite makes it to wraparound status, but here’s a 1967 Czech video by Karel Gott, the story of a boy who wants to use a cannon to break down the gate of his girlfriend’s house, after her uncle forbids her from seeing him.

(Hat tip: Noah.)

re: #4 buzzsawmonkey

Since this was 1967--the year before the Prague Spring and its suppression by the Soviets--is there any possibility that the boy wanting to break down his girlfriend's door with a cannon after her uncle forbids him from seeing her is a symbolic reference to the Czechs wanting to break down their Iron Curtain isolation in defiance of the Soviet edicts?

I would think there is a strong possibility.

No.

Kinda on topic:
Charles,
If you're reading this, I'm just curious-- do you ever have a chance to just find a quiet spot, pick up an instrument and play tunes that YOU want to play? With all the work that you put into LGF, I was wondering if this might be something you do to relax and "get away" from it all--or is that just a thing us guitar dilettantes do? Man, looking at your musical profile, you sure have played with some great musicians over the years and I'm curious as to how much, if any, "recreational" music playing you do. Also, are you currently working on any musical projects. Please forgive me if you've addressed these kinds of questions in the past...
BTW, thanks for bringing other great musicians wider exposure on LGF.

A certain lawyer was quite wealthy and had a summer house in the country, to which he retreated for several weeks of the year. Each summer, the lawyer would invite a different friend of his (no, that's not the punch line) to spend a week or two up at this place, which happened to be in a backwoods section of Maine.

On one particular occasion, he invited a Czechoslovakian friend to stay with him. The friend, eager to get a freebie off a lawyer, agreed. Well, they had a splendid time in the country - rising early and living in the great outdoors.

Early one morning, the lawyer and his Czechoslovakian companion went out to pick berries for their morning breakfast. As they went around the berry patch, gathering blueberries and raspberries in tremendous quantities, along came two huge Bears - a male and a female.

Well, the lawyer, seeing the two bears, immediately dashed for cover. His friend, though, wasn't so lucky, and the male bear reached him and swallowed him whole.

The lawyer ran back to his Mercedes, tore into town as fast has he could, and got the local backwoods sheriff. The sheriff grabbed his shotgun and dashed back to the berry patch with the lawyer. Sure enough, the two bears were still there.

"He's in THAT one!" cried the lawyer, pointing to the male, while visions of lawsuits from his friend's family danced in his head. He just had to save his friend.

The sheriff looked at the bears, and without batting an eye, leveled his gun, took careful aim, and SHOT THE FEMALE.

"What d'ya do that for!" exclaimed the lawyer, "I said he was in the other!"

"Exactly," replied the sheriff, "and would YOU believe a lawyer who told you that the Czech was in the Male?"

The book's author, Song Hongbing, claims that behind world-changing events like the battle of Waterloo, Adolf Hitler's rise to power, President Kennedy's assassination, and the deep recession in Asia during the 1990s stood an intricate conspiracy aimed at increasing Jews' wealth and influence.

Song, a Chinese computer engineer and history buff who resides in the United States, writes that almost every defining historical moment has been instigated by Jewish bankers, and mainly the Rothschild family, which Song says dominates the global banking system, including the US Federal Reserve System

It has to do with freeing up the airwaves for the vast amout of cellphone and wireless traffic, as I understand it. Since the government controls the airwaves, how TV is broadcast becomes the government's concern.

And the government AUCTIONS off the frequency space. When the analog system shuts down, they can get money for licenses for that space.

BTW, the scene in which both WC Fields and Peggy Hopkins Joyce are getting undressed in the same room, each unaware of the other's presence, the song playing in the background is "Look What I've Got," which was of course intended as ironic commentary.

Similar to the radio in "Five Star Final" playing "One More Time" when the second suicide occurs.

No idea; the film title, of course, refers to a sensationalist tabloid.

Pinball machine... early counter top model. Gottlieb named it that because they figure that the pinball machine was only a passing fad, and that this would be one of their last machines in their early line of pinball machines.

Of course, most pinball machines up to that time were counter top.

You want to see revealing gowns, rent any film--especially Paramount--from 1931-33.

For real fun, find a copy of "International House" and check out the floorshow number "She Was a China Teacup, But He Was Just a Mug," with its see-through Chinese girl outfits.

I've heard that in the 1925 version of Ben Hur, topless women can be seen in the background at the chariot race.

I use to collect antique coin operated amusements. Slot machines, pinball machines, bowling machines, if it took a coin, and was more than 25 years old, I was interested.

I've had three large collections in my life. Started collecting in 1974. Don't have them anymore, just 3 small items in my small apartment.

My main interest was in the restoration and repair of the machines, not playing with them. And of course the history.

First coin operated machine goes back to BCE. A holy water despencer in a Greek temple.

re: #191 buzzsawmonkey

Very much so.

Then there is the ironic commentary in Airplane, when Julie Haggerty is dancing in a bar with someone stabbed in the back, and she thinks his efforts to point to the knife are how he is dancing, and imitates him.
The music: Stayin' Alive.

Lizardim -

Forget the possible metaphor about life in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1967, much as I get it. The tune reminds me of a cross between the Dave Clark Five and the Mamas and Papas of all people. The writer and singer were WAY talented for light POP Music in the "East Bloc" in 1967, moreso if they were the same person. This stuff was at worst contemporary with the music in the US and UK circa 1965/66. GOOD FIND Charles - Not the Leningrad Cowboys - yet, perhaps The Prague PO'BOY.

i do too. all the styles were so so flattering, not to mention so well constructed.
great fabrics, buttons, fit.
and affordable. because quality was part of the product, even for poor people.
i have thought alot abt. the decline in quality clothing. i believe it started in the late '60's when unions destroyed manufacturing w/ their demands. the product suffered and then advertising took over to foist unattractive poorly made garb on the public.
corners were cut to produce a cheap garment.
now fashion is a throw away industry. wear it 3 mos. and out it goes.
the old slogans on tags of "made to last" etc. would be laughable today.
i collect antique clothing and accessories. it is really amazing when you see a well made dress or suit.

You would need a hell of an arm to fence with a Patton saber. Long ago, I owned one (WWI era). It had been somewhat butchered (shortened) by someone who tried to "repair" the edge ... it weighed a ton in the hand. But the hilts were superb, and it was all business.
