There was a cool gorilla in the Milwaukee Zoo when I was growing up, named Samson. He used to stroll up to the glass, spend a few minutes checking you out, then BAM! He'd smack the glass with his fist so hard you were sure he'd break it.

From that blog I was reading about him:

At his peak, Samson weighed 652 pounds (the average weight for an adult male gorilla is 400-450 lbs). And he was grouchy. He sat on his throne ( which was actually a scale ) glowering at the slack-jawed yokels like a hirsute Archie Bunker, and was famous for rushing at the glass and pounding on it. I saw him do this many times, and it was impressive to say the least.

I get sick of Multiculturalism sometimes. It is right and good to learn about different cultures, but when you put all cultures on the same level and say there is no difference between cultures except for their respective practices, you do a disservice to learners. Every culture gets pushed down to the least common denominator. Imagine telling kids that there is nothing wrong with various cultures and that they are equally valuable! it denigrates our American culture and values!

Walter, I was always fascinated by the fact that parrots, like people, are right or left handed. I had an African Grey for many years--tragically, he was abducted when some work was being done inside our home, and I never saw him again. But he was a lefty when he used his claw to eat, and I know other people whose birds were righties. Never paid attention to which foot he curled up when he slept. Does the head go on the side opposite the curled up foot, then, as a counterweight?

For some though, like Penn and his pals Susan Surrender and Tim Bobbins, I cannot stand them at all...even if they were give the most outstanding performance in the history of acting, I would still see them and think about what useless and pretentious tools they are.

To those lizards who actually entered a name in this contest, you realize you are competing against grade school children?

I don't really care. I liked my name selection and I doubt anyone else will enter Beauregard. And I doubt it will win, but based on his amazing eyes, I thought the french for "Beautiful Gaze" was a poetic choice.

How much of the uproar over evolution derives from the racist fear that they share the same ancestors with those who they think are their inferiors.

I submitted an entry for the name "Qonjo leej" - it means "handsome child" in Amharic, the predominant language of Ethiopia (You know, the country/region that adopted Christianity before any other - where Mark spent his post Apostle days) You could call him "Jo" or "Lee". Anyhow, I just wanted to say that he is not quite as cute as my two offsrpring (thank God my wife decided to marry down!), but I would still be proud to include him in the family tree.

Hell, Bernie Mac got bigger applause than Heston.

Saw Slumdog last night. Totally overrated. Was made for tv movie stuff-Lifetime style. How many times did it go to the emotional well with the...he loses her only to find her only to lose her again! nonsense? By the third time I couldn't care less. And, two words: dance sequence.

If by "cute" you actually mean "hideous", I agree.

Completely agree. I'm always head scratching at the supposed cuteness of, say, chimps. An average kitten kicks their butt in the cuteness department any day of the week.

Two syllable names are best for any infant, no matter what species.

They recognize it and learn to understand it faster than any other type of name. Why? Because you flux once when calling them and the second syllable is usually more compassionate than the first.

For example:
Good... Girlll
or
Good... Boyyy

It is the same with their names.

A lot of thinking goes into a good name for someone you care about.

The name of this Gorilla should probably be left up to the people that take care of him.

He is not a commodity, he is a friend.

418 samhein  Mon, Feb 23, 2009 1:01:01pm

Chimps can get nasty and turn, it's a known fact. Even in the wild it is being discovered that they can actually be homicidal. But so can humans. You can't peg the entire species because of what some do. Also, having been around all sorts of animals, wild and domestic, all of my life, when something like that happens, it is usually the fault of a human, whether something done on purpose, accidental or even unknowingly. Not getting all "animal rights" here, just looking at the facts.

I don't agree that no one should be able to have a wild animal. I've found I have had more success in "rehab" than some supposid "professionals" I have known. However, people unfortunatly get pets they are not ready for or know nothing about. And sometimes people are not willing to admit when they need help with a pet or when their home may no longer be the best for their pet's needs, be it wild or domestic.

It sounded to me like "Travis" should have been put into a home for retired chimps a while back, when he started showing his aggressiveness. He would still be alive and around people who know how to handle this personality change, handling and housing him appropriately. But his owner chose not to do so, I guess, so in the end both her friend and Travis paid terribly for what looks to be her bad judgement.

As far as this little cutie, apes are my favourite "critters", with gorillas my favorite. I can watch them for hours.

I would like to name the baby gorilla...
Aldo

This name means...
In the Planet of the Apes movie series, Aldo is the leader of the gorilla factions (and the ape revolution, by extension) during the rise of the ape society prior to humanity's downfall, as the "highest species" of the planet.
