World | Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 5:19:50 am PST

Come on now, Kim! Unclench! Pretty please? North Korea says preparing rocket launch.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Tuesday it was preparing to launch a satellite on one of its rockets, which analysts have said would actually be a test-launch of its longest-range missile.

The announcement, which unsettled financial markets in South Korea, follows weeks of angry rhetoric from Pyongyang aimed at the conservative government in Seoul and warnings that the Korean peninsula was on the brink of war.

Analysts said Pyongyang was using brinkmanship to put pressure on the new U.S. government and its main allies in the region, South Korea and Japan, to reverse tough policies against the North.

Check this out...

War on Terror Update
Confidence in War on Terror Drops
Confidence in how America is doing in the War on Terror has dropped dramatically in the past two weeks. Just 47% of voters now believe the United States and its allies are winning.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 23% believe the terrorists are winning, while 25% say it's a draw. Six percent (6%) are undecided.

Just over two weeks ago, 62% said the United States and its allies were winning the war, a new record high. Only 14% said the terrorists were winning at that time. The latest results are similar to those found in early January.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula is the outcome of Harry Truman's Korean War to stop the communists, backed by the USSR and Red China, from overrunning the south. The South Koreans are easily a military match for the North in conventional forces, and they have a much stronger economy.

The tactical problem is that Seoul is within range of North Koren heavy artillery. The strategic problem is that the North is a rogue regime that engages in military brinksmanship and other criminal activities, including counterfeiting U.S. currency, to keep itself afloat. They're shakedown artists.

We should provide a nuclear shield for the South, and pressure the South Koreans and the Chinese to let North Korean refugees into their countries. That would bleed off the North Korean population, which is ready to flee the brutal regime in large numbers. There would be a high economic cost to this, but it would be much cheaper than a war.

re: #31 _RememberTonyC

Can we make it to November 2010 without collapsing? At least we have a chance if we can get something done in the next election.

The Democrat controlled Congress already has a filibuster proof super majority with Arlan Spector(R) and Snow(R) included as Democrats, Republican only in name.

Not enough American voters understand that election, ALWAYS, have very serious consequences, and since ACORN(Obama,Ayers,Soros)was given over $5 billion worth of pork in the ludicrous "stimulus" bill, there is now no way to stop the future voter fraud, which by the way is going to make the voter fraud that happened in this last election look like a picnic.

If Americans couldn't make an informed decision of who to, or who not to vote for in the 2006 and 2008 elections, there's little to no chance they will make informed decisions of who to vote for in 2010 or 2012.

This is not the same culture in which Jimmy Carter made millions of Democrat voters into Reagan Democrats, Americans were much harder workers and not as entitlement minded, now, half of America, or more, are entitlement minded and want whatever they think the government is going to provide for them, and this republic can't survive the kind of hit that the 70 million baby boomer's are going to put on this current economy, which is already like $65 trillion in debt in regards to Medicare, Social Security etc, with less and less being paid in by current workers.

Americans may look back some time down the road, and realize that they should have informed themselves better with their election decisions, but by then, America will not resemble the great Republic that it once was.

There's been far too many people who have the ingrained attitude of, "Oh, they'll never do that", or, "Oh, it will never go that far", etc, etc, and the problem with that mentality and attitude, is that those very changes get made through various channels while the public is near completely unaware.

I hope America wakes up, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

The O-man is completely clueless on how to handle NK. They don't respond to anything except strength. You can't negotiate with them. They lie and cheat. Tell you anything you want to hear. He has no experience with international crisis. With Iran, NK, Iraq and Afghan all up in the air and the economic crisis which he is trying to solve by spending more, its shows his lack of experience and solution.

Obama doesn't have the balls to do what he wants to do (remove the icky Israeli/Palestinian issue from his plate, even if it ultimately means more war and misery for Israelis), so he's going to let the U.N do it for him. Plus, he probably thinks that a billion dollars might buy a few months/years of relative quiet from the Strip, allowing him to claim that his policies are helping the cause of peace in the Mideast. The fact that the bulk of the billion dollars will be used to buttress the war machine of Hamas will be ignored or deliberately covered up..

I know it sounds like conspiracist nonsense, but if you look at what his administration has done so far in its infancy, it would be possible. He shows little willingness or even interest in modifying his policies to promote the health of the American exchanges.

There is a very real risk of a complete collapse of the North Korean regime. While the final outcome, the end of that evil regime, will be good, getting there will be dangerous. Huge floods of refugees north and south will strain both China &South Korea. The NoKo military, fearing they have nothing to loose and everything to gain, may lash out and attack South Korea. Or some rogue general may grab a nuke and sell it to the highest bidder: Iran, Al Qaeda, Hugo Chavez, or even the Saudis.

This is the most dangerous time of all for Korea.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Carter couldn't have pulled the wool over the eyes of Americans like Obama has, and Carter, in less than four years, made millions of lifelong Democrats, including my parents, who up to that point never, ever had one good thing to say about Republicans, in Reagan Democrats.

It looks like there is no way to stop the ruinous transition that is affecting this country, at warp speed, which has only taken slightly over one month.

As bad as Carter was, he didn't create this much chaos in one month, that had the lasting affect that this current Administration has, with the exception of really being the starter of Islamic terrorism, as it didn't take Reagan long to get this country righted.

What is going on now, probably can't be reversed.

Could you imagine what would have happened in this country, during Carters term, if he would have voiced the idea of nationalizing the banking system, and then started to take the steps to implement it?

There would have been blood on the streets, and yet, with this current administration, all there is is yawns from most Americans, like nothing is going on.

America should be seething, loudly, publicly, with what is going on, and yet, she sleeps.

In other words, the Canadian troops were not involved. But they got blamed for it anyway. This is clearly a Taliban psy-ops. They fired on the village and paraded the dead children for the press. The press ate it up.

I know that we feel a traditional need to defend the South, but right now it would be best to let China carry the ball. They can threaten (behind the scenes) with the sticks and carrots.

Right now China is looking at how all of what is going on effects exports, and they are freaking out. Without exports they are looking at unemployment, and people sitting around is dangerous.

They have a powerful military, and North Korea does not want to piss off the elephant in the room.

Knock the missile down as soon as they stand it up on the launch platform. The resulting explosion will destroy the launch facility and provide the North Koreans with time to reflect upon the error of their ways. They are doing this to shake down the US for money. Therefore the best response to to make it prohibitively expensive for them to try it again.

The question which George Stephanopolus put to Obama during the debate was "Will you as president commit to direct talks, without preconditions, with the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela..."

So yes, Obama has said he would do that.

Yet, hope springs eternal as the One has shown consistently that he has the propensity to deviate from the truth. With luck, this stated intent will also fall by the wayside unless of course there is more money to be squeezed from our great grandchildren he can pilfer with such shenanigans! It appears he travels by word and in person with tons of newly minted US cash to dispense to like-minded rulers against freedom, capitalism, human rights and America in general. The man is paying and playing with those who wish to destroy us, to kill us. Developments that are so sad beyond human comprehension.

All good points but Hitler used the economic crisis in Germany to re-militarize. Perhaps China will do the same except it won't be a re-militarization but an upgrade of its capabilities? They could sell off our debt that they hold to raise the capital.

America should be seething, loudly, publicly, with what is going on, and yet, she sleeps.

re: #55 quickjustice

I would argue that ROK troops are more than a match for NK troops and in many ways superior, the only issue would be the pure manpower that NK can through at SK.

As far as I know the US and SK strategy for conventional warfare with NK is to have combined forces in SK essentially fight a delaying action, slowly give way in battle retreating southward and maintain a strong presence in the area until conventional bombers and American Army and Marine units based in Japan, Okinawa and Guam can arrive in the area and then beat back the NK onslaught. Therefore, any conventional attack by NK is doomed to failure b/c the superior technology of SK and US military will eventually annihilate the NK military invasion. The only hope for NK is to develop missile technology, as they are currently doing while Obama talks and talks and talks, and try to even the technological playing field, or at least be able to inflict mass casualties on SK and US forces in the region.

Be ready to strike and destroy North Korea's missile test
By Philip Zelikow

In 2006, the United Nations drew a clear line, acting under Chapter VII of its Charter. Today, in 2009, the United States need not stand by and watch North Korea cross that line. Non-military measures were given a fair try. Now the political predicate for the Carter-Perry recommendations has been well laid.

The logical next step, after high-level discussions in the U.S. government and consultation with our allies, is to issue North Korea a warning to stand down (conveyed either directly, indirectly, or through a leak of planning to strike and destroy the missile). Pyongyang would either then stand down silently or they would not. We lose little from the warning if I'm right in estimating that the North Koreans cannot protect the test missile from a U.S. strike once they stand it up on the gantry. Our warning would be that, if you stand up the missile (itself a plain violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1718), the United States will take it down. The North Korean perfection of a long-range nuclear missile capability against the United States, Japan, or the Republic of Korea would pose an imminent threat to the vital interests of our country.

If the United States strikes North Korea's missiles on their launch site, other would-be proliferators will take notice -- thus lending much greater weight to the fresh diplomatic initiatives the Obama administration has in mind. The downside, as in 2006, is the possibility of North Korean escalation against South Korea. The United States must consider its own security, the security of its Japanese ally, and the security of its South Korean ally. Ideally, all should arrive at a common understanding of what must be done to protect their long-term security.

I agree; however the big concern is are we willing to deal with the consequences? It has been estimated that there are 100,000 artillery positions that are within range of Seoul. Now, I'm sure they can be dealt with, but probably not before massive damage is inflicted on the city. That is grounds for concern. That being said, I really do think NK need knocked down a peg or two.

re: #73 republic

Well said.

I can be a bit of a cynic and in my opinion Obama is intentionally using fear to maintain power, a frequent tool of petty dictators. This is why he consistently uses words like "crisis" and "catastrope" in every possible sentence. He wants to keep the American public afraid so that he can present himself as the savior, the father figure who will protect us all from all the bad bad enemies that threaten us, whether they are physical enemies (other combative nations) or economic (falling markets). The problem is that the methods he wants to use to protect us are doomed to failure. In foreign policy he wants to gain some rapprochement with enemy nations which will only further embolden them to oppose us and create the image of the US as a hollow nation, without courage and conviction. And, economically his ideas will lead to massive spending, government intervention, and possible nationalization which can cause a collapse of the economy as free markets become less free and Americans lose confidence in the entire economic sector.

Also, in regards to the stimulus I think many Democrats see this as a win-win situation. If the stimulus works then they prove that the government is the only entity that can maintain the economy on sturdy ground and will give impetus to further government intervention and spending, and if it fails it will prove we didn't do enough and it will give impetus to further government intervention and spending.

I agree, I just get nervous with that unknown quantity.

Put it this way: Assume that only 10% of that artillery is in working condition. That leaves 10,000 guns that can fire both conventional, chemical, and biological rounds. How many sorties and/or direct assaults would it take to neutralize that threat? How long would it take? What kind of chaos would ensue as the entire population of the northern half of South Korea begin streaming south? Could troops respond north quickly enough with every highway jammed with traffic fleeing the conflict?

I have no doubt that the US and ROK Armies would eventually be victorious, but I also suspect that a good chunk of South Korea would be devastated in the process.

LOS ANGELES--- George Clooney apparently had a good reason for skipping out on Oscar night: He had a meeting with President Obama.

The Oscar-winning actor appeared Monday on CNN's "Larry King Live" and spoke of his visit earlier that morning with Obama to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Sudan's Darfur region.

The difference between socialism and communism is merely the degree of enthusiasm.

Socialism has two heads... communism and fascism. We are in the process of ditching the capitalist system that gave us the highest standard of living in the history of the planet for the latter version.

re: #168 Nevergiveup
Well I really HATE to say this, but MacArthur was wrong. Even after the United Nations Troops finally all arrived in Korea, once they finally pushed all the Norks up to near the Yalu River, the Chinese sent in hundreds of thousands of very well equipped and trained soldiers and kicked the UN Troops back to the DMZ where the whole stupid "police action" started in the first place.
Had we allowed our fighter pilots to cross the River and fly over Chinese territory, there's no doubt in my mind at all that the Chinese would have sent a million troops into Korea and pushed us out of Korea altogether. And remember, in those days, China and the Soviet Union were buddies, who's to say what the Soviet Union might have done in that circumstance.
As for today, I believe the NORKS's would use virtually all of their million man army to take over the South; technology will only take you so far. My uncle (RIP) served in the Marines in Korea, was one of the lucky ones who made it out of the Chosun Reservoir and he told me that the Koreans and Chinese didn't CARE if they lost 10 or more troops to everyone of the UN Troops they killed.
When dealing with North Korea (and to some degree the Chinese Military) we have to keep in mind that we are not dealing with especially rational people.

235 quickjustice  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 7:01:38am

The crony capitalists on Wall Street (and a lot of them are Democrats!) are huddled with Schumer, Frank, Dodd, and Obama's people to try to salvage their bank holdings (bank stock and bank creditor positions) on the backs of the taxpayers. That's the reason the insolvent banks haven't been shut down and liquidated by the FDIC as they should be. Liquidation of insolvent banks is the fastest way to flush the toxic assets, and revive the economy.

The government's acquisition of "equity" positions in Citibank and others helps only the Wall Street buddies of the Administration who own stock in, or are owed money by, those institutions. This is inside baseball played at the expense of the rest of us!

I know that we feel a traditional need to defend the South, but right now it would be best to let China carry the ball. They can threaten (behind the scenes) with the sticks and carrots.

I am sorry, but I deeply hope Lizards will not realize this is China's problem. Red China's first and foremost priority is a strongly fortified border against the US and her democratic allies - SK, Taiwan, and Japan. And as long as NK follows this function, Beijing will eventually allow for anything that NK feels like, despite any other risks that may follow, e.g. horizontal proliferation. Actually, mainland China doesn't give a damn about proliferation, as this rather plays to her vision of a multipolar world and sino-centric order of Asia, more precisely to a vision of a more and more strained US, while Bejing would continue to win scopes for her "peaceful rise". so if the US troops leave, there will soon be no south any more--as it will be "revolutionized"--, and this would definitely be going to challenge the Japanese security.

I was honestly very ashamed and shocked due to the anti-American sentiments and historic revisions that occured publicly on the streets and in the high schools of South Korea, especially during the last ten years under KDJ and RMH. However, these leftists have been de-selected and they do certainly not represent the majority among SK electorate.

re: #148 republic

I agree.

It's really interesting to witness.

Gut wrenching, but interesting.

I pray for my kids and grandkids.

What has led us to this place in our history?

How could so many people be so thoroughly fooled by their elected 'leaders?'

How can Democrats and some Republicans in their madness for absolute power so quickly become so absolutely corrupted against the very fiber that has made this country great?

Why do so many in positions of power hate America so much that they are willingly destroying her at every opportunity?

Where has the media gone? Do they not know that once Socialism becomes the norm in America they will be controlled by the state as well? Freedom of the Press will no longer exist. Are they so dense as to beg for their own destruction?

Has our entire political system decayed beyond repair? If so, the suddenness of the process is shocking?

It was my fear that the failure of the USSR would eventually manifest itself here. It has taken just over a decade, but the signs are apparent that our way of life is possibly coming to an end. Our new leaders from Obama down are facilitating the demise as fast as they can.

China will not waver.

Our radical Islamic enemies will not waver.

The carcass of America will be ripe for the vultures.

I hope Obama and his fellow destructionists will realize they have provided the kill and their fate will be that of putrid carrion, as well.

That's very true and must be very much on the minds of the South Koreans. The US would have to co-ordinate an attack on the NoKo missile test with the South Koreans & Japanese or else face a huge diplomatic backlash from her allies. I'm sure the topic came up when Hillary visited last week. What she said, we don't know...

True, however just for the purposes of appearances and propriety it might be best if we are seen as restraining Japan. Still a lot of ugly memories of WW2 there. Why give NK a propaganda opportunity on a silver platter about how they could say "I told you so. Japan does want to reconquer Asia."

Gave the chimp Xanax too. In the 70's it became popular to have a squirrel monkey. My mother wanted me to have one but I was a kid and really did not want the responsibility. She also tried to push a snake off on me. I opted for a cat instead. Interesting that the parent was the one into exotic animals but she romanticized them and knew only what she saw on TV. The same with parrots, beautiful but a lot of maintenance and I have seen more parrots and monkeys coming into animal rescue lately.

You know, can i say that we shouldn't pick on Obama for the unclenched fist routine. Bush said something similar several times and always made it clear that if the dictators calmed down, we would, too.

What is problematic is Bush added, "or else you might be next." The real problem is that Obama thinks that all it takes is to speak softly, without bothering to carry a big stick. That is the problem, here.

he speaks with the clipped cadence of a dictator. his body language is condescending. his words are dangerous. his policies disastrous

Get ready to contact those lawyers, people. Barack Obama's Health Care Power Grab is coming up this week, and he needs to be derailed on this issue, before he destroys the health care industry in the US.

Good morning from the feudal fiefdom og King Richard II.

This rates as an outrage of the day for me:

Rent car in suburbs, pay Chicago?

How would you like to rent a car in Waukegan or St. Charles, only to be slapped with the 8 percent "transaction tax" that applies to Chicago car rentals?

Brace yourself. With a burgeoning $50.5 million budget gap, Chicago is reaching into suburban pockets. And Enterprise Rent-a-Car has filed a lawsuit challenging the Daley administration's effort to collect the tax from drivers who rent cars in the suburbs.

The suit was filed last week in Kane County after an administrative ruling by the city's Department of Revenue that City Hall will "presume" that all car rentals in the six-county area are subject to Chicago's 8 percent transaction tax.

To be excused from the tax, the city is requiring rental companies to photocopy customers' driver's licenses and obtain a sworn statement from customers that they won't be spending more than 50 percent of their time driving in Chicago during the rental period. Without that, the city is demanding the companies collect the tax and turn the money over to the city. Audits will be conducted. At least one is already under way.

King Richard seems to think the collar counties belong to him now too. He can go fuck himself. I'll be damned if I ever give that asshole another penny in tax ever again.

Obama should go to Darfur.

Oh, I have no doubt he'd enjoy going, and looking concerned and sorrowful for the cameras.

But would he, say, establish a no-fly zone, with US pilots shooting to kill any Sudanese military aircraft that entered the zone? Or arm-twist Egypt into doing this, as a condition to their getting military aid from us? Doubtful.

Leftists love to bleat about we should all "do something about Darfur", but they're always short on details.

Supreme Court will hear case of cross in park

By David G. SavageTribune Washington Bureau
11:31 AM EST, February 23, 2009

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said today it would decide whether the government can maintain a cross in a national park to honor fallen soldiers in the latest test of church-state separation.

The cross case will give the Roberts Court its first chance to weigh in on the First Amendment's ban on an "establishment of religion." In the past decade, the justices have been closely divided on whether religious displays, such as the Ten Commandments, can be kept on public property.

At issue now is an eight-foot tall cross in the Mojave National Preserve in southern California. It was first erected by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1934 and has been maintained as a war memorial by the National Park Service.

The American Civil Liberties Union objected to the cross and filed a suit on behalf of Frank Bruno, a Catholic and former Park Service employee. The suit noted that the government had denied a request to have a Buddhist shrine erected near the cross...

LET'S SAY YOU'RE Gov. Gary Locke's brother-in-law. You bunk at the governor's mansion. You commute to your nearby job as an executive of a private technology firm.

DAN LAMONT
Gov. Gary Locke says his brother-in-law's employer received no special favors.During your two years with the firm, the governor signs a bill giving your company a tax break, personally intervenes in a dispute involving your company, shows up for a party there, and signs a federal loan application for your company, whose founders—your bosses—pay at least two visits to the mansion.

At the same time, your company rakes in millions in state aid, lands a fat state technology contract, and is allowed to use government credit authority to float new loans (an authority illegally granted, as a state auditor's report will reveal this week).

Are you getting gubernatorial favors that average citizens don't get?

Naaaw, says the governor.

This North Korea deal has the potential to become a serious, serious deal.

Our response to this missile test could prove to be the straw that broke the camels back and a all out war could be the result.
This "IS" a test of our new leadership and the North Koreans would like nothing more than to retake the South, if our response to this test is pathetically weak, expect a war.
If we are too harsh and over reaching, expect the same.

We have had a "certain" political party spouting off that we don't have the money for war for months and now this same party is in the process of completely changing the American capitalist system in favor of a much more Socialistic system that will take so much money, it will break the bank(for lack of a better term), not to mention public hostilities that naturally occur to varying degrees. It is during these types of major geopolitical changes(In this case the last remaining superpower) where the world becomes a much more dangerous place...hence, thugs and dictators have a window of opportunity to take advantage of this disruption, to take advantage of weak leadership to make gains for their personal benefits.

Next on the silver platter of change...Taiwan, Israel and various European countries, both eastern and western.

They went to the plastic bags because they were cheaper than the paper for the stores. I've never seen paper phased out at the grocery stores, and continue to get paper bags to this day. They fit better in the trunk, and we use them for paper recycling and cat litter disposal.

Yup. Had a date last summer at a really nice patio and my date seemed to be a really nice fella. Halfway through our lunch, he developed a nosebleed and so I became concerned, gave him a kleenex and pointed out the men's room so he might take care of it in private.

He waved his hand at me and said, "Nah, I'll be alright." Then he grabbed his napkin, twisted it into a point and shoved that sucker right up his nose and continued with his meal. Every bite he took and every gulp of soda made that napkin dance like fishing bob and I was absolutely mortified.

411 Leonidas Hoplite  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 7:38:55am

An interesting article about all the Keynesian 'wisdom' being bandyed about these days...

But if we are going to attempt to solve the problems of today by drawing inspiration from Keynes, then we should pay attention to his mature ideas rather than to the textbook versions of what he said, some of which reflect Keynes’s earlier thinking. When we do this we shall find that some of his policy proposals were quite different from today’s “Keynesian” wisdom. Other proposals were extraordinarily radical and far from what is being proposed by lawmakers on the political left or right today.

It is true that in the 1920s and early 1930s, Keynes advocated measures such as deficit-financed public works expenditure to offset recessions. But that was not unique to him. Such “orthodox” academic economists as Frank H. Knight, Jacob Viner, and Paul H. Douglas also advocated such policies, albeit on different grounds. So when advocates of deficit spending for public works projects invoke Keynes, they could just as easily invoke orthodox economists as well. Either way, by the late 1930s, Keynes was not an advocate of many of the countercyclical policies being advocated today. For example, with respect to increasing investment through public works—or what today we are calling “infrastructure improvements”—Keynes’s view is highly nuanced.

In the first place, he preferred that such investments be made without deficits. But if they were to be made as “loan expenditure”—that is, through a deficit in the portion of the government’s budget allocated to long-term expenditures like infrastructure—the expenditure should be covered by a surplus in the portion of the budget allocated to ordinary expenses like transfer payments, or through a special fund accumulated in prosperous times for just such purposes. If a deficit were incurred, the investments should be “self-liquidating,” that is they should repay their costs over the long run. Thus his strong, but not rigid, preference was against deficit-financed public works.

It is important to note that Keynes did not think that public works expenditure was very effective in countering existing or impending recessions. For one, he believed that it was difficult to get the timing right; it would take a long time to plan and execute the appropriate projects (indeed, many of the projects would not take effect until the pressing economic problem was inflation and not recession).

As for poo-scooping

As a sociological phenomenon, I'm fascinated that poo-scooping (or pooper-scooper, to use our lexicon) laws actually seem to work. I remember back when they were first proposed in New York City in the late 70s/early 80s. It seemed ridiculous to believe that hard-bitten New Yorkers would voluntarily clean up their dogs' crap, rather than simply walking away and disappearing into the crowd. And yet, by and large, the law worked. Streets in NYC today are MUCH cleaner than the dog-poop-smeared sidewalks of my youth.

When I was seventeen it was a very poop year...

Right, that's why I said all the real Israel haters already had positions in the 0bama administration.
Ross did learn and blames Arafat for the failure of the Camp David talks, but even if he clearly says we need to deal strongly with Iran, I doubt 0bama will take that advice.

If its anything like here, then its self-policed. Dog owners/dog walkers know that if they don't do the pick-ups, chances are that the parks and streets will become no-go areas for their dogs. So here, everybody knows that there are watchful eyes about - and does it. Some fearsome ladies ahve been know to holler across the playing fields at some dozy dog walker to effen pick up the poo - not something one wants to be the recipient of!
Its now our turn to be the inofficial litter police - because the poo is bagged and binned, but the plastic bottles and such stuff is left lying about on the grass: yeah, we're feeling quite smug at the moment, picking that up as well and telling everybody about it ...

Exactly!
It worked very well with smoking cigarettes, too. There was really no need for excessive bannings, but the Anti-Smoking lobby needed those laws.
As for welfare: spot on! Thats exactly what many older people here have to say about it. And its the same for teenage pregnancies: no big deal now here in the UK - but in the Netherlands, where they ahve as explicit a sex-education in school as here, there are hardly any, because the society condemns teenage pregnancies.

The plastic bags from the grocery store are insanely thin, but I find that the local liquor stores use a better quality bag.

I haven't bothered to buy reusable grocery bags yet - if I do, then what will I use to bag our newspapers and to line our small trash cans?
But I do have a reusable bag just for the wine shop. It has dividers to hold six bottles without clanking; very handy.

re: #437 Occasional Reader

As a sociological phenomenon, I'm fascinated that poo-scooping (or pooper-scooper, to use our lexicon) laws actually seem to work. I remember back when they were first proposed in New York City in the late 70s/early 80s. It seemed ridiculous to believe that hard-bitten New Yorkers would voluntarily clean up their dogs' crap, rather than simply walking away and disappearing into the crowd. And yet, by and large, the law worked. Streets in NYC today are MUCH cleaner than the dog-poop-smeared sidewalks of my youth.

I can still remember days when I forgot to grab an empty grocery bag as I was taking the Poochster out for his walk around the block (in Park Slope, Brooklyn). There were times when I ended up improvising with candy-bar wrappers or Chinese menus that had blown off someone's door -- which meant that I then had to walk half a long NYC block to the nearest trashcan with a scrappy, lunging ADHD terrier at the end of a leash in my right hand, and in my left hand, a big pile of steaming-hot dogshit slowly soaking through the carryout menu.

This didn't get much attention. President Obama named Bruce Riedel, a former CIA official and Brooking Institution scholar, to head up a review team for overhauling U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan. Riedel sees the Palestinian issue as the cure-all for all problems in the Middle East:

An Obama Adviser's Not-So-Bright Idea for Winning in Afghanistan

Ultimately, the solution in Afghanistan may involve solving the age-old conflict between the Arab states and Israel, says administration adviser Riedel in a book published by the Brookings Institution, a foreign-policy think tank, last year. Al Qaeda, and the Taliban to some extent, continue to be motivated by the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Riedel argues. If that conflict is resolved, Al Qaeda may go away.
"If Palestinians choose to make peace with Israel, the most fundamental point of Al Qaeda's narrative becomes irrelevant," Riedel writes. "In other words, making peace between Israelis and Arabs is not only wise policy in its own right, but also an extremely useful strategy for pulling the rug out from under Al Qaeda."

Good morning, all...

Speaking of poop-scooping... I was talking to a lady with the biggest Husky I've ever seen in the dog park a few weeks ago. She told me that she had been walking the dog on the leash (as required) at one of the local beaches. She got into a conversation with another lady who was walking a little dog. As they talked, the Husky peed on the little dog. When she realized what had happened, she apologized profusely and they each went their separate ways, she thinking nothing more about it.

Well, the "lady" -- dare I say "beeyotch?" -- with the little dog went over and told one of the local Nazi cops about it, and he came over and -- wait for it -- wrote her a $50 citation!

I told her that she should have (A) let the dog shit on the little rat bastid as well and made it an even $100 and (B) gone to court and asked exactly what statute she/her dog had broken...

Sheesh! ! !

What a crock.

How many times do we have to post Mubarak's statements after 9/11 about how Bin Laden never brought up the Palis until it was necessary for PR?

Funny how all the jihadis ran to Iraq and Afganistan, yet none come to "Palestine."

Funny how Jordan killed 30,000 of them.
Funny how Kuwait expelled 30,000 Kuwaiti born Palis in the 90s.

Funny how jihad is only 60 years old.

Omigawd!
Oh horrors!
I know that scenario well - but with two Border Collies, and a handfull of poo wrapped in all the remaining paper hankies I'd found in my pockets ... and tehre is never a waste bin when one really really needs one!

My dog story.

My friend was walking her little white dog in our subdivision. He was peeing as he went, marking his territory. About 1 mile into the walk, the dog peed on a neighbor's grass by the sidewalk.

The neighbor, inside the house, sees what the dog did...hops in his car and chases the lady down and said, "Lady! You're dog pierced my lawn with urine!"

My friend could not understand his anger because the dog could not have peed very much since he had been peeing for a mile.

Ultimately, the solution in Afghanistan may involve solving the age-old conflict between the Arab states and Israel, says administration adviser Riedel

So the Pashtuns are killing other Afghans because they are inspired by watching the Palis trying to kill Israelis? Is that how it works?

Al Qaeda, and the Taliban to some extent, continue to be motivated by the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Riedel argues. If that conflict is resolved, Al Qaeda may go away.

Did he miss the Al Qaeda communiques about Kashmir, Chechnya, Al Andalus and the Balkans? Did he miss the number one Al Qaeda complaint about the "apostate regimes" of the Muslim world which must be overthrown? Did he miss the part where the only acceptable solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict is the complete destruction of Israel? Failing all that, AQ is here to stay, unless they are defeated.

Except that these people are are in charge of coming up with US policy in the Middle East. It would be one thing if this was the minority view with this administration. It's not however. There is no one in this administration who opposes this kind of nonsense. There is not one single individual in the Obama administration who can be said to be pro-Israel. Not one. Shatner revealed his lofty ambition in response to a letter from a fan who urged him to put himself forward for the Governor General of Canada. …

In his letter, Shatner regretfully added: “I must, with my deepest thanks, turn down your honourable intent to advance me as Governor General. Besides which, I don’t have time to be Governor General.” Despite his busy schedule, the actor is confident he has what it takes to run the country, explaining: “As Prime Minister I can lead Canada into even greater exploits.”

Very true -- interestingly, I'm more of a "people in fur clothes" type myself*... ;)

*Though it really depends upon the breed. My exceedingly friendly and affectionate mutt instinctively chases off pit bulls that approach her and quite aggressively, I might add -- I think she senses their potential for harm and seeks to preemptively avoid any problems.

and the mounties have Phasers

They need to fix a couple of the obvious design flaws with the classic hand phaser:

1) No trigger guard

2) No sights (much less a tactical rail!)

3) Highly-visible "solid" beam points out your position to the enemy like a neon sign

And it's amazing how they did away with grenades of any sort. I was watching a TNG episode last night, and they were trading phaser blasts with a group of dissidents about 30 feet away (amazing how they can dodge them!). All they had to do was throw a stun grenade and that would have disabled them, but apparently, they forgot to bring any along...

/always amazes me that it's 400 years in the future, and they still haven't come up with a real cure for baldness

Get your guns and ammo while they are still legal and readily available. You'll be able to get something no matter what kind of bullshit gun control they put in, but selection mat be limited. Right now, everything is backordered to hell and gone, but you can get in the que and, hopefully, get what you need before they come looking for it.

I was having a hard time finding ammo just a week after Election Day...

Iranian Arrested In Connection With Deadly Blast in Egypt

Egyptian police have arrested an Iranian man in connection with the deadly bomb blast that struck a crowded bazaar in Cairo at the weekend. A 17 year-old French teenage girl was killed and 20 others were injured in the bombing that targeted the Khan al-Khalili market on Sunday.

Police interrogated the young Iranian who was detained outside the square in front of the al-Hussein mosque, next to the market where the attack took place, said Egyptian daily al-Mesriyoun.

Have you ever seen a gov't program die? Nationalizing part of the financial community is but a step. Remember that goofy tax that was on your phone bill? It had been on all phone bills since 1898!

People talk about a "temporary nationalization."

Since when does the government ever give anything back? It's like the mob, once they're in, they're in forever.

I expect some sort of attempt to ban ammo in the future -- can't ban the guns outright, theoretically, due to the 2nd Amendment, but the dictators now in control don't give a crap about individual rights, let alone the intent of the 2nd Amendment.

They don't give it back. I've read that social security was intended to be temporary. Notice this quote:

In a written statement to Congress in 1935, Roosevelt said that any Social Security plans should include, "Voluntary contributory annuities, by which individual initiative can increase the annual amounts received in old age," adding that government funding, "ought to ultimately be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans."
