Obama’s Representative to Durban II Apologizes

Please tell me this is some kind of bad dream and we’re all going to wake up soon.

Scene 1: The UN committee planning the Durban-2 pro-racism - I mean “anti-racism” - conference. Libya chairs the committee, Iran is the vice-chair, Cuba, the rapporteur, and Russia is presiding. The plan is designed to ensure that the conference limits free speech, bashes Israel and enshrines Muslims as the world’s only and perpetual victims.

The US representative stands to propose amendments. Is the speech a thunderous denunciation of dictatorship and a defense of liberty? Not exactly. Here is the key sentence: “I hate to be the cause of unhappiness in the room… I have to suggest [amendments] and I offer my sincere apologies.

Anne Bayefsky:

Flashback to 1994. The United States Senate imposed a reservation on U.S. ratification of the Racial Discrimination Convention concerning article 4 because it restricts free speech. Article 4 aims to limit incitement to racial hatred, but is open to an interpretation in direct conflict with the First Amendment.

Obama’s delegation, however, did not object to the proposal to ensure lawmakers adhere to article 4. Instead, they suggested adding a reference to another part of the Racial Discrimination Convention that guarantees an equal right to freedom of expression regardless of race. This idea does not in any way meet the Senate’s command to ensure that the Constitution trumps the treaty in matters of free speech.

There is no escape from Durban II — at least with our vital principles intact. "

80%. Same percentage that voted for Kerry.

And if Obama decided to appear at a press conference the day before the 2012 election, wearing an SS uniform, and announcing that he has just dropped an H-bomb on Tel Aviv and he has a new plan to send all the Jews in America to internment camps so that society can be rid of them, he'd get 70% of the Jewish vote.

Thomas Sowell has a column that runs in this same vein. Scary stuff.

I read it earlier. Excellent read.

" One of the many symptoms of this decay from within is that we are preoccupied with the pay of corporate executives while the leading terrorist-sponsoring nation on earth is moving steadily toward creating nuclear bombs.

Does anyone imagine that we will care what anyone's paycheck is when we see an American city in radioactive ruins?

Yet the only serious obstacle to that happening is that the Israelis may disregard the lofty blather coming out of the White House and destroy Iran's nuclear facilities before the Iranian fanatics can destroy Israel.

If by some miracle we manage to avoid the fatal dangers of a nuclear Iran, there will no doubt be others, including a nuclear North Korea.

Although, in some sense, the United States of America is still the militarily strongest nation on earth, that means absolutely nothing if our enemies are willing to die and we are not."

That is not what is happening at all.

The meeting in an Israel hate-fest.

Canada find it so disgusting that they are not participating. The Bush Administration was said to not participate.

Obama is participating on the purported reason that American representation may help tone down the hatred toward Israel.

This American representative is apologising for his reason for being there. He is apologising for American support of Israel. He is apologizing for not joining in the hate Israel blood lust.

51 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 4:37:43pm

I figured out why 52% of the people thought voting for Obama was a good idea. See when you're getting a reach around, it feels so good that some folks forget that they're getting porked in the pooper. The rest of us sane ones realized quickly we were getting f---ed.

52 SteveC  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 4:37:47pm

"Pleased to meet ya! Let me apologize in advance for any f*** ups, real or imagined."

Actually, I can see the logic behind this. You always attack the strong opponent first, that puts the minor opponents and the wannabees on the defensive, right out of the box. Obama is trying to discourage terrorism by playing weak.

Some caller even brought up the issue of the birth being noted at the time in the Honolulu Advertiser, and Berg dismissed it because "that's just a free throwaway ad rag -- not a real newspaper." He is either completely unaware that the Honolulu Advetiser was the major newspaper of Hawaii because he was "confused" by their name -- or he's purposely obfuscating.

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

62 karmic_inquisitor  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 4:39:50pm

In the unlikely case that some Obama Administration lemming is reading this -

You may think that you are imitating French diplomacy and building a soft power base.

You'd be wrong.

The French rarely apologize for anything. You might think they have, but they just lull you into a sense that they are congenial when in fact they are getting what they want out of you. In other words, they flatter. But they don't apologize. They get you to make commitments without they themselves making any. That is how soft power works.

Soft power is not prostrating yourself before the tyrants and thugs of the world expecting them to behave differently. Flatter them and lie to them - that is what the French do. But they don't apologize.

They only prostrate themselves when attacked by an armed force. And I hope you aren't planning to imitate them in that respect too.

More from NRO:

In deciding to attend the planning session, Obama had ignored the direct plea from Israel’s Foreign Minister to stay away, along with Israel and Canada. Instead, on Monday the President sent reassuring messages via phone calls from senior White House and State Department officials.

According to reports, these officials claimed “that Washington's decision to participate in the conference was being coordinated with the Israeli government.” That would be true — if “coordination” meant announcing hours in advance that the United States intended to do the opposite of what had been requested.

Sir Winston is that you?

Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."

But this sleeping on the floor thing, ploome ...something's wrong there!

re: #87 Nevergiveup

Yes, but the broad sun-lit uplands have been foreclosed on. And we're forgetting that the history books are all being re-written so that this stirring moment from the 20th century will have been nothing more than the railings of some fat old drunk white imperialist.

121 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 4:54:47pm

The pendulum is swinging very hard to the left. It appears that the left and Obama do not understand that the harder it swings to the left, the harder it swings back to the right. They certainly are holding all the cards for at least the next two years but their actions now may doom the Democrat party to obscurity for decades. Americans typically have sort memories. If Bernake lied today (I'm fairly certain he did) and we aren't out of this recession in short order, Obama and the dems will pay the price. It will still take years to fix the mess these idiots will make but at least they'll be a small minority with virtually no hope of regaining power.

I'm glad Charles mentioned a bad dream, because this is the exact feeling I experience when having a very rare nightmare in which I have committed a heinous act. Immediately, I am filled with dread and miserable guilt that I have done something wrong, violated my conscience and wonder how I can ever redeem myself. The worst part is knowing there is no redemption from this act.

That is how I feel about Obama. I feel sickened that we can never completely repair the harm he and the Democrats will do to our country, and I have scoured my conscience and wondered if there was anything more I could have done to prevent this radical occupation of our government.

Even more disheartening are the brainwashed Obots chanting the Obama creed.

I have been in my boss's retail store for the last few weeks helping out while his wife was with him in the hospital in Boston. It is a very high end clothing store, Armani and the like. Lots of well heeled moonbats who mostly never earned a dime of their inheritance, and have no idea how to replace what is lost recently, so voted for the 0 because that was what their "IN" crowd was doing. I cannot count how many customers have remarked over those 3 1/2 weeks that they cannot believe they voted for this guy. They have seen their net worth drop by as much as 50%, and are getting mighty scared now, because, unlike most of us, most of them would not know how to earn a paycheck if they were starving to death.

The main nirther had ten minutes to say his piece across the nation.

He was singularly unconvincing, and had the unnerving air of an obsessive "true believer."

As for Michael Savage himself being a nirther:

If you listen to what he said on this issue, it seems pretty obvious that Savage isn't actually a nirther, but he is not above spreading their craziness around just to whip up his audience. He's admitted to that sort of cynical populism before: "I know none of this is true, but it will entertain the knuckledraggers who listen to me."

and this should really help out:

Harvard expert nominated for key Pentagon post

Unlike most of his predecessors selected to be under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, Carter has no professional ties to America's arms makers or manufacturing industry, nor has he spent his career in government procurement. Instead, from his perch at Harvard's Kennedy School, Carter has been criticizing the Pentagon for buying too many armaments it doesn't need, decrying what he calls a lack of discipline and "failure to take account of cost growth in weapons systems and defense services."

A trained scientist with a doctorate in theoretical physics and a degree in Medieval history, Carter's advocates say the long-time Harvard professor and national security specialist is being chosen because his combination of technical expertise and knowledge of defense strategy will be needed to make what Gates calls "difficult choices" about which weapons programs to invest in and which ones to terminate.

OBAMA'S WILLINGNESS to treat with Hamas and Syria is part and parcel of his apparent belief that the principal reason that the Arab and Islamic worlds are hostile towards the US is because the US supports Israel. The notion that Obama blames Israel for the Arab and Islamic hatred of the US gained credence this week when it was reported that Obama intends to appoint former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia Chas Freeman to serve as the director of the highly influential National Intelligence Council.

Freeman is known for his virulent animus towards Israel. In numerous public statements he has placed all the blame for Arab and Islamic hostility towards the US on Israel and argued that the US's conflicts with the Arabs will disappear the minute the US abandons Israel.

In one such statement in 2007, Freeman, who extols Hamas as "democratically elected," said, "Those in the region and beyond it who detest Israeli behavior, which is to say almost everyone, now naturally extend their loathing to Americans. This has had the effect of universalizing anti-Americanism, legitimizing radical Islamism, and gaining Iran a foothold among Sunni as well as Shiite Arabs."

By refusing to submit to its Arab enemies, Freeman argues that Israel has earned their wrathful retaliation, which Freeman claims, also places Americans in danger. In his words, "Such retaliation - whatever form it takes - will have the support or at least the sympathy of most people in the region and many outside it. This makes the long-term escalation of terrorism against the United States a certainty, not a matter of conjecture."

Oh dear. Michal Savage just had a nirther called "Philip Berg" (sp?) on his show, giving him a national platofrm.

I listened to what the guy had to say. Conclusion:

HE IS A NUTCASE.

Every time an objection was raised, he tossed out some offkilter change of subject.

Sad, sad, sad to watch.

The truth simply does not matter anymore, only perception constitutes reality. The communists have been successful in replacing objectivism with the insane idea of subjectivism. I can't help but be fatalistic about this. It's profoundly troubling.

These are the new Dark Ages.

Note my comment #58 above.

'Jupiter-sized' comet to streak past Earth tonight

The spectacular comet will be visible to the naked eye over the next few nights.

Its colour comes from the gases that make up its Jupiter-sized atmosphere.

The stellar traveller is very active, shedding nearly 800 gallons of water each second on its journey around the Sun. That's enough liquid to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in less than 15 minutes.

Jets from the nucleus throw out cyanogen, a poisonous gas found in many comets, and diatomic carbon, which glow green when lit by sunlight.

It could be visible any time after dark.

As we speak Al Gore is trying to figure a way to squeeze carbon credits out of it...

Yes, and I read the justification for getting rid of the warthogs and said WTF? Just because a USAF general can't or won't think beyond the glamor of Mach+ stealth fighter/bombers, doesn't mean that the warthogs are obsolete. Damned good plane for what it does. I would, though, like to see the gun camera footage of that A-10 taking on an Iraqi helo during GWI.

I never did see eye to eye with the Air Force guys in their putdown of the A-10 because it was a mud mover and didn't fly fast enough to make thier scarves blow in the slipstream. As a grunt when your job was to stop Soviet tank divisions from rolling over your ass, those tank busters were the only thing you wanted to see.

The Bush administration has indicated that American diplomats would not attend the so-called “Durban II” review conference, scheduled for April in Geneva. The current administration has expressed concern that the conference would turn into an anti-Israel event, just as the first U.N. conference on the subject did seven years ago in the South African city of Durban.

In mid-November, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the United Jewish Communities General Assembly that Israel has decided to skip the Geneva conference after reviewing a draft statement issued following a preparatory meeting. The draft accuses Israel of “practices of racial discrimination against the Palestinians,” saying that its policies constitute “a new kind of apartheid, a crime against humanity [and] a form of genocide.”[...]

I never thought I would ever, ever even think this, never mind say it, but Jimmy the Jew hater is beginning to look like a friend of the Jews, compared to Hussein, and his entire administration. They are all Jew haters, and have their Court Jew, Rahm Emanuel.

Screw them all.

Good news!

Yep!

Company is trying to do it right, plenty of notice, package continuation of benefits for awhile, hiring a placement fire to help, allowing workers to use company resources for the job hunt.

Ugly day, HR running round, over all we lost just under 10% today. One of the benefits of my position. I support about 50 engineers, and their hardware.

I used to believe that the Left/Libs, most Democrat politicians, and the MSM didn't hate this country, they just had a different vision of it than we did. But that has rapidly changed over the last few weeks. They truly hate this country and all that it stands for. They are turning it into something that few, if any, will feel is worth defending with their lives.

Duty? Yeah, it's your duty to pay your taxes!
Honor? *snicker* Old fashioned!

It's about race relations in general, but the anti Israel stuff got pushed in, and we pulled out, just like many countries did. GW got flack from the left for boycotting the last meeting, we'll see if they do the same if Obama does.

No, don't be silly. I don't begrudge anyone his wealth. It's just getting tedious to listen to him day after day trying to explain the importance of our loss of freedoms through the example of his Gulfstream. Then again, it's so unique to own your own private jet that maybe the example sticks by its rarity and uniqueness. Who knows.

Important excerpts from Rubin's piece:

The only thing you can do with a strategy of carrots without sticks is to make carrot cake. Now consider what is sneaking up on the US government as it hands out candy:

On March 29, local elections will be held in Turkey. If the current government wins these municipal races, especially in Ankara and Istanbul, the country will be encouraged to go even further down the road toward Islamic extremism. Whatever happens internally (where the nature of Turkish society forces it to go more slowly), Ankara's foreign policy is increasingly aligned with that of the radicals in the region - not only Hamas but also Syria and Iran.

Turkey's many friends are hoping that moderation and its traditional political virtues win out. But what's happening there may well be the most important political event in the Middle East since the Iranian revolution 30 years ago. Think of what it means if, in whole or even in part, Turkey goes from the Western to the radical camp; clearly this is a world-changing event.

Then on June 7 come the Lebanese elections...
[snip]

And what is the United States doing to fight, stop or manage this visible crisis?

Nothing.

The loss of Turkey to the Islamists will be a strategic disaster for America. Is Obama awake at the switch? And if he is... does he know which buttons to press?

Chandra Levy the intern while dating another democrat adulterer politician, unfortunately ran into the DC area's Salvadoran gang problem not 3 blocks from Senator McCain's mother's house.
