Back in the Fifties and before, there were gamers who "played" (serious stuff, though) with tin soldiers. These were historically accurate, and most often hand-painted by the individual "player". The ones I saw were based upon the Napoleonic War era.
They still do. It's a favorite pasttime of many military servicemen and former servicemen. Lots of different games out there.

We were onloading ammo at Seal Beach, Ca. Outside the Ops building they have 2 16" shells. I cannot imagine being on the receiving end of that. GWI we were on the gun line and Wisconsin was shooting at the Iraqis. Those shells would go over and it sounded like a freight train on steroids.

My oldest boy (now in active duty with the US Army) grew up playing violent video games.....Ive seen him chop, shoot, blow up, punch, kick, run over, stab and chain-saw enemies to death.
Has it prepared him for the Apocalypse? I'm not sure, but we sure have alot of fun....I'm in my mid-40's and I used to have to go to the arcade to play stuff like this.
Ive been playing Gears of War 2 on Hardcore level for the last couple of weeks.

It may not have been legal for them to have been put up. There are laws against posting bills in most municipalities, even if they are seldom enforced.
I know in Maryland- we have laws about posting- not that they are always observed. If we get annoying posters in our neighborhood, people will check with the county- and if they are not legal, the county will remove them and fine the organization. I am not sure DC has that law or that they ever enforce it.

Had to hit them direct or do them in with shaped charges or flamethrowers. I don't think the public has any idea of how terrible war is. I think the WWII generation was the last to really understand.

Yes, the Battle of Guadalcanal was a three-day affair.The battle ended when the Japanese battlecruiser Kirishima was sunk by 16" gunfire for the battleship USS Washington.

No, there were multiple battles starting with savo Island which was a debacle. Lost 4 heavy cruisers to no Japanese ships lost.
then there was Batlle of the eastern Solomons - carrier battle protecting the island - end of Aug 42
Then came Cape esperance, an American victory off of Gudalcanal again.
Then First battle of Gudalcanal (aka friday the 13th). 'Barroom brawl with the lights shot out' as it was called by one participant
then 2nd Battle of Guad with the washington and South Dakota engaging a BB and heavy cruisers the next night.
Then Tassaforanga on the 30th of Nov - also off of Guadalcanal. An American disaster.
At the end of this the Sound off Guadalcanal was renamed Iron Bottom Sound due to all the sunken ships........

Was just in Guadalcanal and the Solomons last November, on a scuba trip. Amazing place. Not much has happened since the war. People still make their homes in old abandoned war structures, and the shallow waters are full of stuff that the Americans just shoved off the docks because it would have cost too much to ship it home--upside down jeeps with the tires still intact, together with old coke bottles etc

My bro and a bunch of other Marines rode with the Navy to Iwo Jima about 2 years ago just for the hell of it. He and his men put on all their gear? and ran up the beach....they way it was done in WW2. He said it was so damned hard to run up that beach with all their gear. He was amazed at how the others did it back then.

My wife's grandfather, mother's side, was a Marine Raider on Okinawa. One of the greatest men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. After I got back from Iraq, I sent him an email telling him "Now I've got some stories for YOU!" Her grandfather on her dad's side was a Navy diver in WWII. He died before she was born, so she never got to meet him. I wish I could have as well.

We were onloading ammo at Seal Beach, Ca. Outside the Ops building they have 2 16" shells. I cannot imagine being on the receiving end of that. GWI we were on the gun line and Wisconsin was shooting at the Iraqis. Those shells would go over and it sounded like a freight train on steroids.
I served on the Newport News, call sign Thunder, and we could actually put more ordnance on a target per minute with our 8 inch guns then the New Jersey since they were automatic loads. No powder bags, just a big ass bullet and brass cartridge.

She was a grand ship to be sure. USS Newport News was the last 8" gunned Heavy Cruiser to be built anywhere. Last of the 3 ship Des Moines-class, her automatic 8" guns were a designed to overcome previous 8" guns slow rate of fire. Sadly, Newport News was broken up for scrap while her two sisters Des Moines, and Salem are still extant, with Salem having been turned into a museum ship .

Surigao was a massacre.Was it the 2nd Santa Cruz where Washington and South Dakota got into it with a Japanese task force?
Naval battle of Guadalcanal wikipedia South Dakota suffered an own-goal that put her electrical systems out of operation. The Japanese took full advantage and she was heavily damaged without much chance to reply. Washington used her radar-ranged guns to good advantage and shot up Japanese BB Kirishima.
The Japanese were in a position of needing decisive victories and getting instead a mix of tactical victories and marginal defeats in the naval fighting during the Solomon islands campaign. The U.S. would go on to field four Iowa class battleships, (of which Missouri is most remembered), some 20 or 30 new carriers, and a host of smaller vessels. Although sheer weight of numbers would have made U.S. victory inevitable, by 1943 the balance of advantage had shifted to the Americans in terms of air crew skill, design quality of airplanes, and the skill with which commanders handled their assets.

Between the rightwing isolationists and the leftwing peaceniks who controlled the actual production of the plants that produced the war material, if Hitler had not invaded Russia it is unlikely that American industry would have gotten foursquare behind the war effort. We would have fought for a while, then--after "proportional response" sufficient to assuage domestic anger--would have probably cut a deal with the Japanese regarding spheres of influence in the Pacific, and would not have gotten into the European conflict at all.
Sorry I can't agree with that. FDR had enough of a grasp on the left to keep them in check and he would have still wanted Japan beaten.

A meat salesman who sold to my dad's store took me aside one day and told me about his experience on that march and his imprisonment. He talked all afternoon. My dad, I guess, wondered where I'd been for so long (I was working) came back to where we were, and when he listened and found out what the salesman was telling me, turned around and went back into the store. I guess it was time I started to face reality.

Yes, that did happen. An old WWII history book purchased by my grandfather (father's side) showed a pair of photos the Japanese had of two of their men doing just that. My father's father did not fight in WWII. Though he was only 29 when Pearl Harbor was bombed, he was entirely ethnic German and was thus regarded with suspicion by the local draft board (one of whom told him that he looked like a model SS man). He wasn't interned, though.

I could be wrong about the US not pushing for Japan's defeat, but we would certainly not have gotten involved in sending troops to Europe had the Soviet Union not been threatened--and had Hitler been intelligent enough to not declare war on us.
His doing so was particularly boneheaded. There was a lot of sentiment in this country that Europe was "not our fight"--some of it general isolationism, some of it from memories of WWI, and much of it, as I said, from the fact that Hitler and Stalin were pals until Hitler broke the treaty.
Remember that the Communists were anti-Nazi during the Spanish Civil War, but became aggressively pacifist when the Hitler-Stalin Pact was signed. All the peacenik stuff you remember from the Sixties, or echoes of the Sixties, got its first big run during the anti-interventionist sentiments expressed by the Communists in the period between the Pact and its abrogation.
The Communist-run unions would have tied up the American industrial effort with strikes and work to rule if we had gone against Hitler while he was still Russia's ally.
That is probably true.

Easy cut was severing the hand; the most difficult, through the pelvis and spine. High-quality blades could go through several bodies.
And particularly snarky prisoners would swallow rocks just to nick up the blade. One last poke in the eye at the establishment.

2. There was never any chance of relieving the Philippines--those troops were doomed from the start (MacArthur made it worse by trying to defend the beaches)

4. A cross-channel invasion into France in 1942 would not have worked
5. Strategic bombing was a failure.
6. Germany could have won the war at several points, but was doomed after 1941.
7. Dropping the A-bomb was the right move.
8. Stopping at the Elbe was the wrong move.
9. No one has ever really caught the significance of the CBI Theater of War.
10. There ought to be a monument to General von Cholditz, the last German garrison commander of Paris--and the French should have a holiday in his name.

It's kind of like when I was in the military, getting ready for my tour in Germany, I had wanted to see many of the WWII battle sites and was looking foward to actually seeing all those historical areas. A woman that I knew that had lived there before told me to enjoy Germany and it's culture until it was time to come back. She instructed me that if I wanted to see any of the concentration camps (Dachau) that I should visit them during my last week in country. I now know why she told me that.

I'd add that if the fleet had gotten some advance notice of the Pearl Harbor attack, and had sortied...the loss of life would have been much higher. The BB's were vulnerable and sinking in blue water would have killed many more than did die.

I'd add that if the fleet had gotten some advance notice of the Pearl Harbor attack, and had sortied...the loss of life would have been much higher. The BB's were vulnerable and sinking in blue water would have killed many more than did die.
Sometimes, the fleet lay at anchor in the anchorage outside of Pearl--which is 200' deep. All of those ships would have been lost.

Native Americans were brutal to the settlers here too. And that wasn't caused by anything we taught them. They had a history of tribe against tribe brutality before we ever set foot here.
What the Japanese did in China and other parts of the world during WWII was (as buzzsaw pointed out) from what they knew culturally and what was condoned by their own military and Emperor Hirohito. I doubt they thought about it for a second.

1. Kasserine Pass
2. Anzio
3. Not asking anyone how big the hedgerows were in the Norman Bocage countryside.
4. Leaving all winter gear on the Normandy Beaches because "the war will be over by Christmas" (that one belongs to Gen. Bradley)
5. B-17's don't need fighter escort
6. The advance through the Voseges Mountains in France
7. Lt. Gen. Clark's decision to take Rome instead of cutting off the line of retreat for the whole German Army in Italy
8. No tanks can move through the Ardennes (not only a mistake-but we repeated a FRENCH mistake)
9. Pelilu
10. Attu
11. Kiska--all three did not need to be taken
12. Market-Garden

That's what almost stopped me in my tracks. This was either before or after I read "Flags of Our Fathers" which to me read more like a "tell all" or gossip revolving around the three men that put the flag up on Iwo Jima. The movie also left a lot to be desired.

True. Thankfully, Chicago has not forgotten entirely. A restored F4F Hellcat can be seen in Terminal 2 at O'Hare today. It was recovered from Lake Michigan (where it had been used for Carrier Landing Training) and after restoration it was painted in the colors of O'Hare's squadron. One of Richard M. Daley's better actions as Chicago's Mayor: Honest, respectful, and helpful to the public (that the people may remember their past, and learn why it matters).

I disagree too. If you go way back in colonial times in New England, the restraint shown by our colonists in battle was remarkable in the face of an enemy who showed no quarter, including the slaughter of innocent women and children.
The Japanese had to be taught by the western civilized world to rid themselves of their barbaric ways.
There's no moral equivalency between the old ingrained Japanese culture and what happened on the battlefields in the 1800's or earlier here in America.

I'll still be here in 10 years, or at least I plan to be. And history has not wholly been forgotten. You would be heartened if you came to Games Plus in Mt. Prospect, IL, where I regularly play board games. History is a frequent topic there and most of the gamers do have a proper working knowledge of history. We are a small minority, to be sure, but most of us have educated several other people about history. I share your fears, and I work to prevent them from becoming real.

Hayes was a mess and I think he was found beaten face down on some lonely street? The businessman died of a heart attack if I remember correctly at a rather young age. Gagnon.

I remember reading a column by someone a few years back about a visit to the Arizona memorial, where he spoke to a couple of college students about WWII.
One of them told him that she thought the Japanese were completely justified in attacking Pearl Harbor, because we had dropped atom bombs on their cities.

ask yourself this...why did the Japanese have such an inferior battle rifle?...why were they renouned with the bayonet?....these guys were utterly fearless...they died by the boatload because they needed to...to be taken prisoner was the worst thing imaginable to them...

I know a hell of a lot-- and not to the extent of 200 out of 20K men were captured when we captured 10x that number of Germans (and lots more Italians). maybe not much more, but the risks of taking a Japanese prisoner were so great that often, you see them stripped naked in the stockade before being handed over to the provost--just to make sure there were no grenades in their straps. I'm not saying our troops were unjustified--the actions and the orders of the Japanese High Command made it very difficult for their troops to safely surrender.

It's in the nature of war to make mistakes.
Actually Butch flew off the Lexington and earned his MOH during a raid in the South Pacific (near Rabaul I think) in Feb of '42. I think he was stateside being touted as a hero when Midway went down in June.

Final comment--in all fairness, I have a hard time believing that out of garrisons of 20,000 men or more, that sometimes less than 200 Japanese soldiers were taken prisoner because the rest fought to the death. I recall seeing an old Marine training film where the instructor said, "if you have to take any chance to take a Jap prisoner, you don't take him." I know that many fought to the death or participated in suicidal charges, but I am convinced that many more wanted to surrender and get "three hots and a cot" than were actually taken prisoner--they were either murdered or never given a chance to surrender.
When you're in the heat of battle with people who prefer death to life culturally, you're not going stop and ask which ones prefer 'three hots and a cot'.

No, it's not a joke. The last Japanese soldier to surrender did not do so until 1990.
IIRC, he was reported as knowing that there had been a surrender, but he had been afraid to give himself up. In his day, he would have been disgraced by not having died in defense of the Empire. Knowing nothing of the post-war changes in Japan, he thought he'd have to commit hari-kiri upon his return to Japan. I recall an article describing his pleasant surprise.

After what Japan did, in many cases (such as Mindanao) it would have been impossible to order prisoners taken. Japan's atrocities put her enemies into a killing rage when they were discovered, and in many cases that meant that any Japanese encountered would be killed without mercy.

Yeah, I know. I'm not big on 20/20 hindsight exercises for my own personal goals. Now a military historian and trainer that might be a different story. I personally see Market Garden for example as a tactical failure yet it created a strategic success however small.

at Iwo the last remaining Japanese fought it out to the death on the north end of the island...it was a huge problem all throughout the Pacific...I don't know what to tell you...read more I guess

That was not the case with the last Japanese officer to surrender, whose name I cannot recall. He surrendered in 1989, only after a former commanding officer of his had sent his a written order to do so. Surprisingly, he made a successful transition to the modern world and now lives on his ranch in Brazil with his wife and 2 children.

The interesting point I see is not that mistakes were made in previous wars. As said earlier by calcajun, mistakes are in the nature of war.
What is notable is the historical illiteracy of the American people and the recent caterwauling about not having uparmored HMMVVs for example.
War is a come as you are exercise and HMMVV's were never intended as fighting vehicles. They are soft skinned and as such vulnerable to the IED attacks we faced.
We responded, as best as we could but the screaming from the left was ignorant and un-informed. By their standard every successful leader in the past should have been cashiered, e.g.:
- MacArthur for getting caught with his bombers on the ground in the Philippines a full 8 hours after the raid on Pearl
- Eisenhower for incorrectly interpreting the aerial reconnaissance photos of the Normandy hedgerows
- The entire Allied command for failing to miss the build-up for the Ardennes counteroffensive
- Halsey for leaving the Philippines undefended during the invasion
- I could go on and on.
People fuck things up. Of course the left never does.

I've read Sledge and Jones and others. You didn't give them the chance to surrender--there was always the chance that one of them would pull a grenade or just come at you. Our troops did not have much choice in the matter. Orders; clear a cave. Let's see, send in five guys with a flashlight or use a flamethrower tank, toss in a couple of satchel charges THEN send in the five guys with a flashlight. Plan B wins. That's what we were reduced to. In brief, you chose "either them or me."
There is a scene in Wouk's War and Remembrance where the sub captain, Aster, orders his men to open fire on Japanese troops who have abandoned the transport Aster has just torpedoed. The men comply and essentially massacre the survivors in the water and the lifeboats. This was based on a true incident, for which the skipper was neither commended nor disciplined. Those troops, if rescued, would have kept fighting. Horrible as it sounds, it was war.
Gotta run, gang.

I believe that was Dealy on the Wahoo. The boat was lost later, so there was no chance to court-martial; he was too good a skipper to stop during the war.

As far as the 'Jewish guilt" thing being a joke since before the time of Moses, I must say that I disagree.
This really became a big joke in America in the 1900's. Most Jews before that, and many since then, would never say anything negative about their parents (even if it is true). It's that whole "honor your father and mother" thing (not to mention the prohibitions against a) idle talk; b) slander; c) defamation; d) cursing your parents; and e) talebearing).
