Ripping into the Federal Reserve? Has he no idea why the Federal Reserve System came about? It came about due to the Panic of 1907 which was stopped only by a few large banks on Wall Street. To make such panics rarer and easier to manage, the federal government created the Federal Reserve System.
As for the gold standard, that was a constraint on the economy in the early stages of the Great Depression. People couldn’t get money to buy things due to that. Any reason why we might have trouble now is due to the Crapulus Porkulus Spendulus bill and Obama’s expensive budget. The Fed might get stuck having to print money to cover Obama’s debts.

The Robert A Taft Club is a conservative organization associated with Pat Buchanan’s The American Cause. Named after United States Senator Robert Taft, The Taft Club was founded by Marcus Epstein in 2006. The Club holds occasional meetings with panelists focused on a topic of particular controversy within conservative circles.
In the past, meetings have been held on the impact of the Religious Right, race and conservatism, the social significance of the Duke Lacrosse Case, the Right in Europe, and the future of the conservative movement.

Only because the Euro is so weak…
The Euro will never really be a serious contender. There are too many countries involved in making it and then using it. Should Europe have another major war between the users of the Euro (and given Europe’s history, that is not unimaginable), the Euro would cease to be as we know it. The dollar, pound sterling, and other national currencies are better long-term bets, IMHO.

re: #20 albusteve
gold is over 1000$ is it not?
The price of gold is best thought of as a barometer of global stress. And the world is pretty stressed right now.
As purely a function of the relation of gold to the dollar, if the dollar were stronger, shouldn’t the price of gold be LOWER when denominated in dollars?
Anyway, if you’re worried about the strength of the dollar, don’t be. Obama’s heretofore unprecedented spending (ie borrowing…issuing paper), all but guarantees erosive inflation over the next several years. The dollar *WILL* go down in value over time in the mid-term future, in terms of absolute purchasing power. The only “question” is will the other currencies go down MORE.

The Common Strategies of Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Mussolini and Hitler
Excerpt:
From Napoleon’s entry into Egypt in 1798 until the end of World War II in 1945, the vast majority of the Muslim peoples of these regions under leaders who directed their religious and political allegiance, decisively chose sides and in each case, embraced the ideologies of authoritarianism, Fascism and Nazism. As diverse as their political ideologies were, Napoleon, Wilhelm II, Hitler and Mussolini, at decisive moments of their careers, all posed in the role of “Protector of Islam” or called for a “jihad” by the Muslim world against their enemies.

So, would a President Ron Paul actually create a Civilian National Security Force? And, if so, what would Pres. Paul name that CNSF and what color shirts would the members of that force wear?
Perhaps Pres. Paul’s team would strut around in military style uniforms, perhaps earth brown in color, with snazzy looking arm bands!
The only difference between a Pres. Paul and President Obama is that one is a NAZI sympathizer and the other is am “enthroned” Socialist rabble rouser! Will their supporters clash on the streets? Will there be a Brownshirt temptress named Rosa?
CPAC must be crazy to have Ron Paul be a speaker at the meeting! The Gods must think us crazy if a soda bottle satisfies our needs!

Can they put him in fake prison for this?
Police: Man uses fake money to buy fake drugs
ERWIN, Tenn. – A man was been arrested after police said he used counterfeit money to purchase fake OxyContin pills from an undercover officer. Unicoi County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 21-year-old man on Tuesday and charged him with criminal conspiracy with schedule II drugs, forgery and criminal simulation.
Investigator Frank Rogers said the officer met with several people at a mobile home park and arranged for the suspect and another man to come to Unicoi to buy 76 OxyContin pills for $4,875.
Officers said it was “obviously bad money” with some bills printed on just one side.

Why is Jerome Corsi at CPAC?
Turned on the radio yesterday, on KOGO Hedgecock was ranting and raving from CPAC…. and interviewing Jerome “abiotic oil” Corsi… and just lapping it up.
I know many people think Corsi is a hero for writing about the Vietnam vet’s and their story about Kerry. However, those vets were just tools for Corsi, who will write about anything that gets him $$$.
The so called “conservative” US political movement will languish, IMO, until it is willing to look at itself and evaluate both ideas and people honestly. The rah-rah spirit is empty emotionalism.

Not for long. We are seeing a small safe haven effect, but once the massive spending spree starts and inflation noticeably takes off, watch that to change. The Aussie dollar is looking pretty good for the future.

re: #36 looking closely
The far greater part of the flight to safety is going to gold, as compared to dollars; but dollars are preferred to most other currencies (for now), and is perceived as safer than other currencies “as” currencies.

re: #22 Honorary Yooper
Ripping into the Federal Reserve? Has he no idea why the Federal Reserve System came about? It came about due to the Panic of 1907 which was stopped only by a few large banks on Wall Street. To make such panics rarer and easier to manage, the federal government created the Federal Reserve System.
As for the gold standard, that was a constraint on the economy in the early stages of the Great Depression. People couldn’t get money to buy things due to that. Any reason why we might have trouble now is due to the
CrapulusPorkulusSpendulus bill and Obama’s expensive budget. The Fed might get stuck having to print money to cover Obama’s debts.
Its good to consider the pattern of past business cycles, but you need to dig much deeper into your economic history and understand what is the actual cause of the panics and business cycles.
As a solution to panics and runs, the Federal Reserve was in fact, fundamentally, an enormous dose of the same basic poison that caused those panics: artificial credit expansion. It is crucial to understand that money inflation and artificial credit expansion can result from an array of state intervention into the banking and financial system, from legally setting reserve requirements at an artificially low level, which induces banks to expand what is referred to as “bank money” or “book-entry money” beyond what the market can bear, creating bubbles, to direct debasing of the currency, running the printing presses, Fed open-market operations buying securities, etc. etc. The Fed thus did not “solve” the problem of runs and the business cycle - it centralized the cause and created the potential and actuality of bubbles and runs beyond anything that had been suffered before.
In the twenties, it conducted an easy-money policy that increased the money supply and credit that flowed into the stock market, real estate, and consumer credit. Sound familiar? A great source of data for this is Anderson’s “Economics and the Public Welfare: A Financial and Economic History of the United States, 1914-1946.” Anderson was the chief economist of Chase at the time, and warned against the policies that caused the crash.
Our form of monetary system has failed, ruining and wrecking economies and lives to an unprecedented degree. Commodity-backing of money is about the only thing that has historically slowed down the damage that Kings and Central Banks have wrecked by policies trying to create something-from-nothing with the “magic” of money. Paul may be a crackpot, but he sort of grasps the problem with the kind of monetary system we have.
