gmsc’s money tips #6:
As you may have noticed in previous entries, I have no problem with learning about money with fun and humor. Here’s a few more resources that do just that.
First, there’s the “Money Rock” videos from Schoolhouse Rock. These include $7.50 Once a Week, Dollars and Sense, Tax Man Max, The Check’s In the Mail, This For That, Tyrannosaurus Debt, Walkin’ On Wall Street, and Where the Money Goes.
While this video is mainly intended as an ad for the Ca$hflow Board Game, it has some basic, yet excellent, advice on building wealth. Speaking as someone who has actually played the board game itself, I highly recommend it, as well. If you want to try it before buying it, you may be able to find a Ca$hflow Meetup Group near you where you can learn and play the game first.
To close up this entry, watch the SNL informercial parody for Don’t Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford. Not only is it funny and entertaining, but it drives home an excellent point.

I fear they are going to leave all questions unanswered until the last episode and then will try to ram them all in at once too quickly. I will find that, most irritating.

I guess, for her age. And judging by the video gmsc posted, she’s still quite a handsome woman.
But in a way, I walk in the footsteps of George Burns, who said something on the order of, “I liked 25-year-old women when I was 25. Sometimes you learn to stick with a good thing.”

Dane Cook is not funny.
I’ve watched nearly an hour of this crap and he has not made me laugh. Right now he’s talking about trimming his stuff, and referring to women’s stuff as a badly edited kung fu movie.
Something tells me he watched Dennis Miller perform and thought, ‘oh, incomprehensible is funny. I’ll do that - with dick jokes.’

The problem with that is, unless you are extremely rich, when you are 85, no 25 year old woman is going to want to help you change your Depends. If you are extremely rich, they might do it but they will be nagging you about your will and life insurance policies the whole time.

I’m a wine drinker myself. Love red wine. I had a couple Surly beers at a - believe it or not - sake brew pub last week and just went nuts for it. Stopped by my favorite bottle shop on my way home to see if they carried it. It’s a bit pricey - 10 bones for a 4-pack of pints - bud I don’t drink that much beer anymore so it’s about right.

I thought as much. I kinda figured if there was anything more than tepid, polite applause for their Commander in Chief, his MSM lapdogs would be shouting from the mountaintops about the enthusiastic welcome he recieved from our baby-murdering, drug-addled, semi-literate, wife-beating, psychologiaclly unhinged cannon fodder….whoops defaulted to the MSM’s Bush Admin. template to describe our soldiers and marines; let’s try that again-
the enthusiastic welcome he recieved from our fighting heroes.

IT was just like comet Kahoutek in ‘74.
I was 11. I watched it with my (same-age) cousin and my Grampa, who was then 90. Funny. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I still remember what Grampa was wearing. He liked a swig of Old Grandad in the morning, just after oatmeal. For lunch he served us cake doughnuts and 7-up. Then we went out to shoot the BB-gun.

Comets are usually hard things to find unless you know exactly where to look.
Comet Lulin is too faint to be seen with the naked eye now. Best use a pair of binoculars or a small telescope if you have one.
It should be near Regulus (Alpha Leonis) in the constellation of Leo for the next couple of days (or should I say nights).

I rarely watch anything news related since the inauguration. Seeing his face has the same effect on me as being thrown up on. However, as I flipped past the news channels earlier I caught a flash of military garb …I went back, unaware that it was an 0-thing. The glory of the flag draped in backdrop, men and women in fatigues at attention, lined 2-3 rows deep behind the podium, and out he walked. Arrogant, pseudo-superiority …and nothing changed. I saw a few jaws flex …there was a beautiful African American female standing just behind him in camera view as I watched …nothing but flint in her eyes. No applause that I heard.

Unfortunately for me, the only way I can get market updates on my phone is through CNN and I have to skate past some guffawingly biased headlines to get to those….
As for the radio, the only time I hear 0bama’s voice is when one of the talk-show hosts play back something he says or the top-of-the-hour news updates plays a soundbyte…..

This entry will focus on capitalism as a philosophy. I’ll keep it short, but interesting.
The best place to start is the Capitalism Tour. The philosophical underpinnings are presented in easy-to-follow bite-size morsels. It can be an eye opener, even for people who think they know about capitalism.
In the book, The Vision-Driven Life (not to be confused with Rick Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life), by Luther Setzer, there is an appendix (graciously posted for free on the internet by the author) that teaches how to truly understand how your cash is flowing and how it relates to your values by using Quicken (or any financial management software that allows you to use custom categories).
Is that short and sweet enough for you?

Don’t worry about the interest rates for now because inflation is blowing anyway any rate you could possibly get anyway. Just keep adding to them until the rate of return on something becomes decent, then move your money there. Since “saving money” is an alien concept to most people, even with 0% interest you’ll be better off than most.

Sometimes it doesn’t dawn on them until they are decomposing in a hefty bag in a hastily dug shallow grave somewhere out in the boonies.

It’s a horrible analogy but I see in the shine of their eyes the cult-like worship that oftentimes leads to death and destruction. And like Jim Jones he cares not a whit about “the people”, this is all about the glory, the power, the adulation. Gonna be some hard lessons learned before this is over.

Blind followers of The One remind me of the story about the bronze rat.
Guy walks into a little curio shop in San Francisco. He spots a cute little bronze rat all dusty on the back shelf. “How much for the bronze rat?”
The little old shopkeeper told him it wasn’t for sale. He says “I have to have the little bronze rat, just give me a price.”
“Ok, I’ll sell you the little bronze rat for one dollar but you have to leave immediately, and get out of the neighborhood”, said the shopkeeper.
The shopkeeper wrapped up the little bronze rat in a dozen layers of old newspapers and handed it to the customer. He turned and headed toward the door. He didn’t see the rat follow him out the door. He walked down the block and everywhere, out of every door and window, rats came out and followed him. He picked up is pace as he turned the corner and more rats were climbing out of the street drains and joining the crowded street. He began to run. Luckily he was headed toward the waterfront. Behind him the streets were alive with rats. He was on a dead run when he ran out onto a pier and then he climbed up a light pole at the end of the pier. The pier was completely covered with rats and more were still flowing out of every street in sight.
He took the little bronze rat and threw it as far as he could out into the sea. The rats followed. He continued to cling to the light pole for another half hour until the last rat had run off the pier, and then he climbed down.
He stood there for another half hour contemplating the whole affair, and then walked back to the little curio shoppe.
He walked in the door to the surprise of the shopkeeper.
He said to the shopkeeper, “Do you happen to have any little bronze lawyers?”

kickback to his leftist allies disguised as a ‘stimulus package’,
taxpayer money going to people who can’t pay mortgages they shouldn’t
have had in the first place and a garunteed secure detention facility
for terrorist detainees shut down to satisfy a bunch of agitators who
hate America regardless./I’d ask what this assclown does for an encore, but I fear I wouldn’t recognize this country by the time he’s finished…..
Yes, welcome to the USSA, the United Socialist States of America, which will in a few short years, led by an orgasmically giddy press, celebrate the amazing achievement of managing an orderly transition of the former United States into a completely bankrupt third world country with the enthusiastic cooperation of the majority of Americans.
These enlightened Americans keenly feel the huge collective guilt for our former national prosperity, and thus have the irresistable and perpetual moral obligation to pay financial reparations (with someone else’s money of course) for the economic degradation of profit and Capitalism that we inflicted on the world.
The USSA will then be at long last politically compatible with the majority of countries and perhaps once again, after a probationary period of reflection, be allowed to join the true community of nations (minus Israel, naturally).
Finally, as all Americans, now equal in all respects, begin to enter the reality of the socialist utopian ideal, the starvation and disease in this country will only be a small, no a trivial, price to pay when we think of the common good, the political redemption, the social fairness, and the ecological sanctification that we will have achieved.
So friends, do vote for Obama again in 2012, but this time as President for Life. With his unfailing energy, only he has and will continue to have the vision, the hope, and the determination for a new tomorrow! And how, friends, let us join our voices together in our new national hymn, Kumbaya.
Good night and Oblessings to you all.

Sweden probes ‘anti-US’ attacks
Three supermarkets have been destroyed and a fourth damaged in central Sweden in what police say might have been a series of anti-American arson attacks.
Police spokeswoman Kia Samrell said more than 100 firefighters were called in to put out the fires overnight at the Swedish supermarkets in Sodertalje.
Ms Samrell said the police were investigating whether the left-wing group, Global Intifada, was connected.
Global Intifada claimed responsibility for two fires in Sodertalje last year.
It has also said it was behind arson attacks on vehicles belonging to the Danish and Russian embassies in 2005, and an attack on a Polish consulate in 2004, according to the Swedish Security Service.
“The targets have primarily been countries that are participating in the war in Iraq and the Swedish defence industry,” it said.
The supermarkets targeted on Thursday were branches of Willys, and Ica and Tempo. The chains are all Swedish, but sell American goods.
Swedish Radio reports that Global Intifada had recently distributed leaflets in Sodertalje encouraging the public to firebomb shops selling American products.
The US embassy in Stockholm has been in contact with the police and has advised people to exercise “caution while shopping and be attentive to suspicious behaviour”, Swedish media report.
Sodertalje, an industrial town of 60,000 people, received worldwide attention in recent years after accepting nearly 6,000 Iraqi refugees.
I wonder, refugees from saddam dictatorship or, others who now can not go back to Iraq?.

I don’t really want to know, do I?
It’s not all about the US… indeed, most of it is about other countries. As weak as our economy may seem here, plenty of other nations are in worse shape.
Charles doesn’t want (if I understand his few statements on this matter) LGF to be aiding and abetting panic… a very reasonable position to take. I really don’t like rumor sites (of any kind) and don’t link to them.
However, the news yesterday and today from other parts of the world is not particularly happy.
To whit: Argentina threatening to nationalize their grain trading (to stop exports during a historically great drought.) Eastern European currencies are in the tank (seriously, even Russia can’t keep its currency from tanking because $30/bbl oil is way too low to repay debt) and going down. And so on and so forth.
NOT rumor stuff, just the news of the unwinding of a couple of years of worldwide bubble-economies. So the US is not only not alone in troubles, it is likely we will not be as bad off as many other people in other parts of the world.

That’s one of the weirder things about this financial crisis. We’re supposedly the cause of these worldwide economic hard times. If that’s true, shouldn’t our GDP, especially over the last 4 quarters, have the largest drop in the world?
And yet, the US is the country with the smallest GDP decline during that time.
For that matter, why is consumer lending stronger in this recesssion than in any of the past 9 recessions?

Either way, I’m planning for the worst. :-/
That’s always the best strategy - plan for the worst, then hope for the best. It will usually wind up being somewhere in-between.
Too many people think optimism is seeing only the good side of things. True optimism is seeing both the good and the bad side of things, and having the confidence to know that you can effectively deal with the bad.

I have a bad feeling I’m going to have to go into the office… at 3am on a Saturday morning to finish what I was doing that should have been finished hours ago while I was watching BSG. The VPN is working as fast and consistent as a government union employee on a “shovel-ready” project.
My grandfather told me during the Great Depression they all called the WPA “We Poke Along”.
We have had issues with Comcast and VPN lately..Changing from UDP to TCP sockets in the settings seemed to do the trick..What kind of VPN do you use? Cisco?

I went to a gun show in September. It was dead. They were talking about either shutting it down or having it less often at the time. If I only knew then, what should have been obvious.
I went in November and last month and it was packed both times, wall to wall people. Guys with hand carts trucking out mountains of ammo. The prices on everything skyrocketed. You can hardly squeeze up to any of the tables to look at anything.

re: #185 gmsc
One think to note about that first link of yours - just this week I believe the decline in the US GDP for the 4th calendar quarter was significantly increased in magnitude (these things are always revised after researching the data). So the 12 month decline would have been larger than that shown in the article to which you linked. Nevertheless, the other nations’ declines may still be larger.
My tentative conclusion: like with many complex systems, the catalyst of rapid change can be smaller, perhaps much smaller, than the major effect. Consider a stick of dynamite with a blasting cap. Now, the energy released by the blasting cap is much smaller than the stick of dynamite, when ignited, but the cap is required to get the whole thing going.
Likely the housing bubble collapse in the US was merely the catalyst exposing a world-wide strongly over-leveraged economic system that had become un-moored from the physical reality. This is why the UK is in such bad shape. The Brits were intent on making London the financial capitol of the world (taking over the spot from NYC) and that led some significant oversight in managing the growth there.
In Russia the oil boom caused a strongly over-extension of debt in a set of industries that cannot be maintained at low oil prices… and oil prices are low in significant part because the US (being by far the largest oil consumer) is plunging deep into recession and concurrently oil demand has fallen. Remember, prices are made on the margin, and the loss of a million bbl/day of oil demand in the US, say, would be felt widely.
As for China, one really wonky site (for economists) that I peruse from time to time were warning almost two years ago that the infrastructure-building industry in China was unsustainable and that proposed expansions by China would cause tremendous over-capacity. Guess what - those economists were right.
And so on and so forth.
I have more local concerns… e.g. Arnie today declared a water emergency… which will cut down on needless watering of grass, hopefully, but also highlights that even more jobs will be loss in California due to agricultural losses (less water = fewer plantings by farmers.) Jobs are getting quite scarce here in California, commerce is ailing, and some of my plans are being put on hold or derailed.

The bloody narcoinsurgency in Mexico is the latest pretense for more gun control laws (instead enforcing the laws already in place). I got a taste back in January or December when See-BS ran a story on it while I was channel surfing- my initial reaction was ‘Oh good- at least somebody’s paying attention to this’. But a few minutes in, they show some file footage of some seized narcotics and a wicked-looking belt-fed heavy caliber machine gun displayed by the police while the announcer ominously intones ‘Many of the weapons seized by police can be traced back to the United States…’.
So right then and there, I found out WHY See-BS was so interested in the story.
Never once did they consider how closely guarded some of those police or military armories were down in Mexico.

re: #207 Fenway_Nation
They always use lame excuses. The expansion of the CA Assault Weapons Ban in 2000 was the result of that Bank robbery in North Hollywood in 1997 where the robbers had illegally-obtained, illegally-modified AK47s and homemade body armor.
The cops only had 9mm and .38 pistols and 12g shotguns. Which were useless against the robbers. They had to go to gun stores mid-crisis and buy AR-15s and .308 ammo from the stores. Even then, officers reported that the AR-15 shots were not penetrating the armor either, and if they had protected their legs better, the outcome of the whole incident would have been totally different.
So what does the Sacramento Mafia do? Bans AR-15s and a number of other guns, basically because they are “scary looking”. Had that ban been in place before the incident. The criminals still would have had AK47s and body armor anyway, but this time when the cops went to gun stores… sorry no AR-15s, or only disabled or dumbed down ones.

When people bring that up, I can think of a few sheriff’s offices or tribal police departments in Arizona that were better equipped to go up against the North Hollywood bank robbers than the LAPD (Ruger Ranch Rifles w/20-round magazines)- altho’ to be fair an urban police department like that often has different requirements than some of the ones in Arizona.
And all the ‘assault weapons’ bans, background checks and waiting periods in the world won’t keep us safe if criminals are brazen enough to steal shotguns and rifles out of police cars.

March 7-15, 2009: Mountain Justice Spring Break 2009!
In less than four weeks, you’ll have a chance to get totally plugged into the growing movement to end mountaintop removal and bring justice to the coal fields.
By justice, they likely mean replacing coal industries with windmills.*
On the right, I found this link:
Call for Mass Civil Disobedience Against Coal
by Bill McKibben and Wendell Berry
Cherry-picking excerpts:
…it may be necessary for some to break the law in order to bear witness to an evil, bring it to wider attention, and push for its correction. We think such a time has arrived, and we are writing to say that we hope some of you will join us in Washington D.C. on Monday March 2 in order to take part in a civil act of civil disobedience outside a coal-fired power plant near Capitol Hill. [snip]Coal-fired power is driving climate change. [snip]
It’s time to make clear that we can’t safely run this planet on coal at all. So we feel the time has come to do more—we hear President Barack Obama’s call for a movement for change that continues past election day, and we hear Nobel Laureate Al Gore’s call for creative non-violence outside coal plants. As part of the international negotiations now underway on global warming, our nation will be asking China, India, and others to limit their use of coal in the future to help save the planet’s atmosphere. This is a hard thing to ask, because it’s their cheapest fuel. Part of our witness in March will be to say that we’re willing to make some sacrifices ourselves, even if it’s only a trip to the jail. [snip]
We will cross the legal boundary of the power plant, and we expect to be arrested. [snip]

SEAC Readings on Collective Liberation, January/February 2009
Student Environmental Action Coalition
Cherry-pickings:
SEAC works to create progressive social change on both the local and global level.…its broad definition of the environment that includes racism, sexism, militarism, heterosexism, economic justice, and animal rights.
…sometimes disruptive and willing to break the law, …
“No Coal Days of Action” exposed Citibank and Bank of America’s support of destructive coal companies when SEACers performed a “die-in” and effectively shut down Washington DC Citibank branch. 1,9
March 2007 - Students protested mountaintop coal removal at “Mountain Justice Spring Break”, West Virginia.
Those participating in Tampaction believe that tampons and menstrual pads oppress sexually mature women.
SEAC also fights military conflicts. … “No War No Warming”
I suspect Obama and Gore may be serious about shutting down coal America.

Wow! There will be blood turns into a great movie..rated 4 stars..i give it 5..
Watching Daniel Day-lewis sink to totally disparity is a lesson in acting at it’s best.. Like when you watch Sharon Stone sink into oblivion in Casino..
From a smoking hot woman to somebody you want to push out of a moving car.. Remember how Cruz slowly melted down in Blow? Delicious..
or better yet..The innocent girl in goodfellas that becomes a mafia wife..
Danny Day-Lewis puts them to shame in this movie..

Last two movies I saw were The Kingdom and Last King of Scotland.
I guess some lizards took exception to the last line in The Kingdom but I was bothered by another line from earlier in the film where they were canvassing the housing compound for witnesses and this middle-aged lady says she saw something that struck her as odd- a Saudi doing some of the landscaping around the compound. When asked why she thought it was out of the ordinary, she says ‘Saudi’s are just like Americans- they get someone else to do that kind of work’….
Keep in mind this is supposed to take place in a housing compound for American oil workers in Saudi Arabia.

Yeah but thats only because the GOP spent money on her. Hillary on hte other hand had 5 $6000 dresses in same style different colors for the Colorado Dem Primary, but nothing was made over it as they were donated by the designer. I saw it as a $30,000 campaign contribution to Hillary but it was never declared as such. Looking presidential is part of running for office so the McCain campaign took it upon themselves to dictate to her the type of clothing she should wear.

Oh I hear you, it was fine that Hillary got those threads donated (but it was not fine for Nancy Reagan). I know the McCain camp picked the stuff out but what I was getting at was - didn’t they bring her extra stuff so she could pick on the run, and the stuff she didn’t choose was just returned? I thought I read the real tab was less than the MSM made it out to be.

Morning, Lizards.
Count me in that category, too. I don’t go out of my way to see gory films- I’ve seen (and cleaned up after) a few too many fatal car crashes for them to be really entertaining. (You don’t want the details, trust me.)
I may actually break my long standing “wait for the DVD” policy and drag my dead backside out to the theater to see Watchmen when it’s released on March 6. I have the graphic novel (now old enough to vote) and it’s one of the few “comic books” I can reread for sheer enjoyment due to its content. In the Science Fiction Encyclopedia, John Clute and Peter Nicholls named Watchmen as “one of the central science fiction novels of the 1980s” for the way that it rewrote the basic narrative of “superhero” comics, holding up their contradictions to the harsh light of reality. Seeing it on the big screen might be interesting.

THE JOB - URINE TEST
(Whoever wrote this one down deserves a HUGE pat on the back!)
Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test.
Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their A—, doing drugs, while I work… . Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?
I guess we could title that program, ‘Urine or You’re Out’.

So, I’m watching Soundscapes (or listening to it, Music Choice). Nice pleasant background noise mostly, doesn’t move me…just nice noise. Have been sitting here staring at the screen and out of nowhere the music absolutely moved me.
Looked up to see WTF? Tchaikovsky, Hymn of the Cherubim, Universe 5.
Tchaikovsky on the Yanni channel… and it is mesmerizing.

Your Know You’re From Minnesota If…
You’ve never met any celebrities.
“Vacation” means going to Valleyfair.
You’ve seen all the biggest bands ten years after they were popular.
You measure distance in minutes.
You know several people who have hit a deer.
Your school classes were canceled because of cold.
Your school classes were canceled because of heat.
You’ve ever had to switch from “heat” to “A/C” in the same day.
You think ethanol makes your truck “run a lot better.”
You know what’s knee-high by the Fourth of July.
Stores don’t have bags; they have sacks.
You see a car running in the parking lot at the store with no one in it no matter what time of the year.
You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example: “Where’s my coat at?” or “If you go to town I wanna go with.”
You carry jumper cables in your car.
You know what “cow tipping” and “snipe hunting” is.
You design your kid’s Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
The local paper covers national and international headlines on one page but requires 6 pages for sports.
You think that deer season is a national holiday.
You know which leaves make good toilet paper.
You find -20 degrees F “a little chilly”.
You know all 4 seasons: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Construction.
You know if another Minnesotan is from southern, middle or northern Minnesota as soon as they open their mouth.
You actually get these jokes and forward them to all your Minnesota friends.
-Author Unknown
427 | Dustyvet Sat, Feb 28, 2009 6:22:58am |
More Signs That You Could Be A Minnesotan If…
You measure distance in minutes.
Down south to you means Iowa.
Snow tires came standard on your car.
75% of your graduating class went to the University of Minnesota.
People from other states love to hear you say words with O’s in them.
You hate Fargo but realize that a lot of your family has that accent.
You assume when you say “Twin Cities” people know to where you’re referring.
You know what uff-da means and how to use it properly.
You own an icehouse, snowmobile, and a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
You know that when it comes to AM, there is only WCCO; besides, what else do you need?
Everyone you know has a cabin.
You consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping the food will swim by.
You are proud that your state makes the national news 96 nights each year because International Falls is the coldest spot in the nation.
You have refused to buy something because it’s too “spendy.”
You’re a card-carrying member of both the NRA and the ACLU.
Your local Dairy Queen is closed from December through February.
You have no concept of public transportation.
You instinctively walk like a penguin for three months out of the year.
Someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don’t work there.
You know more than one person that has hit a deer.
Your dad’s sun tan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead.
You have apologized to a telemarketer.
You may not have actually eaten it, but you have heard of Lutefisk.
You know what Mille Lacs is and how to spell it.
Nothing gets you madder than seeing a Green Bay sticker on a Minnesota car.
You have worn shorts and a parka at the same time.
You have either a pet or a child named “Kirby.”
Your town has an equal number of bars and churches.
You have had an entire telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number.
The only reason you go to Wisconsin is to get fireworks, to fish, or to buy beer on Sunday.
You know how to say Wayzata, Mahtomedi, and Shakopee.
You grew up thinking rice was only for dessert.
You think that ketchup is a little too spicy.
You drink POP, not SODA.
You always believed that vacation meant “going up north.”
Every January, from age 2 to l3, you let your older siblings talk you into putting your tongue on a steel post.
You consider Lime Jell-O a highly versatile food: a breakfast dish when filled with fruit, a salad when it has shredded carrots and a dab of mayonnaise, and a dessert when topped with Dreamwhip.
You never had to rewind any part of “Fargo” because you missed some of the dialogue.
You call highways freeways.
Your town has an annual festival honoring a fruit, vegetable, or ethnic food.
The first time you saw “Grumpy Old Men,” you thought it was a documentary.
You can recite, from memory, more than a half-dozen “Ole and Lena” jokes.
Every time you see moonlight on a lake, you think of a dancing bear, and sing, gently, “From the land of sky-blue waters…..Hamm’s the beer that’s so refreshing…”
Your dog dies, your spouse leaves you, you lose your job, and your car breaks down, all on the same day, and your first thought is, “It could be worse.”
You’ve gone trick-or-treating in 3 feet of snow.

Just drive MUCH more slowly than the folks in SUVS who seem to think that 4 wheel drive means they can stop faster, stay in the middle lane or far right lane if a two lane street, put your headlights on as soon as your car warms up and don’t turn ‘em off until your home and you should be ok.

re: #350 taxfreekiller
“Third generation on welfare”— As I’ve noted elsewhere, welfare reform, i.e., moving people from welfare into the work force, was the policy that enabled former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to save New York City from bankruptcy. “Between 1989 and 1995, more than 270,000 New Yorkers had been added to the welfare roles, creating a total greater than in all but the two worst years of the Great Depression. That left Gotham with an unsustainable ratio of one adult welfare recipient for every seven workers, at a time when the national ratio was one to twenty-eight.” Fred Siegel, The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York and the Genius of American Life”. amazon.com
“Workfare in New York served to reduce the welfare rolls at both the front and back end. It encouraged people to find work on their own rather than clean the parks. At the same time, workfare laborers contributed markedly to the improvement of the parks and the cash-strapped city’s overall well-being.”
The outcome: “The upshot of workfare and the eligibility reviews was that by the end of 1996, with the city still in recession, the welfare rolls had declined by 18 percent from 1.16 million to 950,000. But that was only the beginning. The revision of the rules also began to change the way people thought about work versus welfare.”
The Obama “stimulus” permanently repeals welfare reform if New York State takes money for welfare recipients.

The Jonas Brothers are an American pop-rock band. The band gained their popularity from the Disney Channel children’s television network. Hailing from Wyckoff, New Jersey, the band consists of three brothers: Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas. In the summer of 2008, they starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock.

They are a Disney discovery. Though unlike the boy bands of the 90’s these young men are talented. Well two of the three anyway. The youngest and the oldest are both very good musicians. The youngest one plays several instruments and writes music too.
So while they do play to the teenie crowd I would give the higher marks than any of the back sync in street boy bands that we all know and hate.

Rather cool, blustery but sunny day today. Has been getting warmer - last week we had 40’s & 50’s for temps. Now we’re expecting 2” of snow tomorrow, more on Monday and more on Tuesday. Enough, already!
Heading to my sister’s later this morning - she’s always had a small vegetable garden in the corner of her yard. Today we’re removing the rocks, block and boards that frame it - we’re going to enlarge it considerably and turn it into a family ‘collective’ garden. We’re planning to raise ‘crops’ to supplement our groceries for the summer and have enough left to put stuff up for the fall/winter.
Next weekend, if the weather cooperates, we’ll be over at a friend’s house doing the same thing.
I’m limited to what I can grow in pots on my deck, but I’ll be doing that this year. Every little bit helps!

hehehe…. reminds me of a story. I was doing some work in the old Boston Garden. During a break, I went down near the floor as the Celtics were practicin/ scrimmaging. Danny Ainge inbounds the ball to Larry Bird. Bird dribbles the length of the court into one corner, then around the 3 point arc all the way to the otgher corner. He shoots a 3 and misses, looks at Ainge and shouts ‘F***ING Danny, give me a better pass next time and I’ll make that shot”!
MJ was so competitive that he bet a teammate a 1000 dollars to see who’s bag would come off the plane first..Little did the sucker know that he had already paid off the handlers to put his bag out first off the private plane…

To each their own, I suppose. I think the majority of men prefer some substance. Usually, I find it’s the men with less intellectual substance prefer their women on the emaciated side. I think those men are more insecure, so the tiny arm candy gives them an ego boost.
uh, you mean intellectuals like soptic women? gosh, I’ve always preferred size 2.

Good morning, lizards.
Yesterday my Marine son was told to pack up his bags and prepare for deployment to Japan in a week and a half.
Last night they told him that it looks like the Marine that he was to fill in for, is not going to be able to get out of his deployment.
So we are back to square one today, waiting for word of where they are going to send him. So far over the last few months he has been scheduled to deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Japan and all three deployments were changed.
All he knows at this point, is that they’re going to send him somewhere.
He told me this time that he’s not even going to bother unpacking.
AHHH The memories! The old “HURRY UP AND WAIT GAME” Glad to see that some things remain the same

I called yesterday (from work) and they could only treat me as a “new customer” which means 2-3 business days before I get a dial tone. I demanded they expedite this -they said they would.
Today? No dial tone or internet. I came in to work just so that I could call and yell at them. “Nothing they can do until Monday”.

Focusing on Card Check.
Gingrich met with some bloggers and students and talked a bit about general strategy. He focused a lot on card check.
Private sector unions — nevermind the police, teachers’, civil servants’ unions — already have $7 billion per year in dues. In addition to destroying the rest of our economy, card check would bring in another $3-5 billion per year in additional dues, and, since the infrastructure is already taken care of with the $7 billion, that $3-5 billion would go directly to politicking.
The democrats not only want to raise your taxes, and punish your employer, they want to force you into a union - where your paycheck will be further eroded by union dues. (union dues that end up in democrat coffers)

I’m at CPAC right now.
The Ron Paul events are not well attended (thank God), mostly people there to secure seats for the next big speaker that’s afterwards. Yesterday, Romney was after Paul, and the ballroom was seriously packed to capacity for him. Paul had low turnout, if you subtract out the people trying to get a seat for Romney and the various Ron Paul Youth groups (Campaign for Liberty, etc.) who are just hardcore Paulheads.
The Paulheads resorted to having an after-hours panel with Paul, Napolitano, etc. with an open bar. To hear them, you’d have to be drunk, I suppose.
Geert Wilders made an appearance at the Omni Shoreham, but attendence was very low (>50), it was not a CPAC-endorsed event.
Lots of anti-McCain sentiment here. Mostly just people laugh derisively when he comes up.
I personally don’t feel that CPAC is as bad as Charles and some of you are saying it is. I chatted with the woman running the Muslims for America booth, she was concerned about some of the speakers, I told her that this is an off-year for CPAC and that the power vacuum is being filled by opportunists like Paul, etc. All I know is I have been telling people why they shouldn’t go to him and the others who are shifty.
Just doing my part.

My wife and I challenged the SEIU under Beck, and other WA State court rulings. They are required to disclose their finances so that the political portion of dues can be determined, and then folks only pay the collective bargaining portion.

We really need to fight against this union scourge. I’m doing my small part, I work in a “union shop” with fair share (what’s fair about it) but i did a bit of research and got out of it. If card check passes I really believe that our economic future is bleak
Great!
Card check is just on more nail in our economy. Unions have ruined entire industries in America. The Democrats want to ensure that all private business go the way of GM and Chrystler. Corruption and pay-to-play politics trumps common sense business.

Of course, most of them would be about what Angela was wearing or discussing her new “Che” tattoo. I would not chalk this up to anything but typical American ignorance of the outside world. Sorry ploome but I have to disagree with you; Obama is there because most American’s were scared to death for the economy and didn’t see McCain as having any answers (neither did I) and they were tired of the Iraq war and Obama pledged to pull out all of our troops from Iraq in ‘08.
Well the economy is shittier and getting worse by the day and Obama just said we’ll have all BUT 50,000 combat troops out of Iraq by 2010. Even Pelosi and Reid weren’t happy with that.
Obama and the MSM BOUGHT this election, with Obama outspending McCain something like 7-1 when McCain stood by his agreement to take public financing and Obama reneged on HIS promise to take public financing, becoming the first candidate for POTUS to do so in over 20 years, from either party.

An Opinionated Play-by-Play of the Plantinga-Dennett Exchange
Seriously long read, and something Charles might be interested in.
Summary:
The debate was between Alvin Plantinga and Daniel Dennett. Plantinga is one of the founders of the Society of Christian Philosophers and one of the fathers of the current desecularization of philosophy. He is widely regarded - even by his critics - as one of the finest epistemologists of the last fifty years and one of the finest philosophers of religion since the Medieval period. Daniel Dennett is one of the New Atheists and is a well-known proponent of atheistic Darwinism and critic of religion. He is widely regarded - even by his critics - as one of the most important early philosophers of mind that opened the field to cognitive science and evolutionary biology. He has contributed enormously to the serious study of the mind and its relationship to the brain. Both philosophers are over sixty and perhaps at the height of their philosophical powers. They have also faced off before but, as far as I know, not in person.

Do any of the Obama cabinet people actually have any idea how to make “improvements”’ to their particular department. Here is a short interview with the education chief Arne Duncan, who can only keep repeating the same two proposals. Send more money and longer school days.
“What’s going on, state after state, due to this tough economy, is devastating educationally. And we can’t afford to get worse now. We have to get dramatically better,” said Duncan, former chief of Chicago Public Schools.
Is talking point number one of the Obama administration to blame everything on the economy? And by the way, notice this guy was running Chicago public schools. Check out how good those schools are.
This kind of proposal is not different than watching the directors cut of an already bad movie. Making it longer doesn’t fix a thing.

I don’t know how we manage to turn a profit.
What you just described is the left’s idea of an America that works.

Do any of the Obama cabinet people actually have any idea how to make “improvements”’ to their particular department. Here is a short interview with the education chief Arne Duncan, who can only keep repeating the same two proposals. Send more money and longer school days.
Is talking point number one of the Obama administration to blame everything on the economy? And by the way, notice this guy was running Chicago public schools. Check out how good those schools are.
This kind of proposal is not different than watching the directors cut of an already bad movie. Making it longer doesn’t fix a thing.
“Improvements to public education” is (D) code for: Throw more money at the problem, Further cement the power of the teachers union, make sure lousy teachers get a raise, and take a huge crap all over vouchers and school choice.

Uh, I don’t recall saying that CPAC was “bad” at all. But it’s disturbing to see so many extreme right speakers and so many creationists.
Did you catch my #697?
That looked like an interesting discussion, but I can’t find any detail.
Meltdown thread material, maybe? :)
As far as “extreme right” and “creationist” speakers, I tend to agree, but the alternative seems to be McCain Republicans at the moment.

I will check and advise. It will probably take a couple of days.

I agree that people changing registration just to mess the opposition is wrong, but how will anyone ever be able to determine whether they really want to be a republican or just want to be a nuisance? I’m not sure telling people what they can or cannot do in the voting booth is the best approach to winning elections, IMHO.

The way I understand it, a political party is a private organization, not a public entity and as such they can make their own rules about who is a member and who is not, and whether a nonmember can vote in what amounts to their private elections.

CNN: How to get Michelle Obama’s toned arms
My favorite part:Boston Herald columnist Lauren Beckham Falcone wrote to Obama, “It’s February. Going sleeveless in subzero temperature is just showing off. All due respect.”
But others were amazed, like 25-year-old Jessie Rosen. After seeing Obama at the speech Tuesday, she went to the Adidas store in New York and bought two five-pound dumbbells. “It was her arms being so toned in spite of her life,” she said.
“This woman is redecorating White House, trying to raise two children and backseat driving the nation,” Rosen said. “She seems to have time to keep her arms toned, so why can’t I?”
/”Backseat”…isn’t that racist?

Ideally I can wait this out somewhere up in Montana in a remote house (kitted out with DirecTV so I can keep track of my Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, Celtics and B.C. Eagles) with a
RugerRanchRifleDeath Spewing Assault Weapon- making frequent runs up to Calgary to stock up gold and silver from one of the banks…..and generally limit my contact with the outside world to something definitively, unambiguously red-state.
Merle Haggard had the answer to this many years ago.
