The Kindle 2 Review

Amazon’s new Kindle 2 is more of an incremental improvement than a massive upgrade. As a Kindle 1 owner, the new features and display improvements (and the fact that I read so much) make it worth the price for me, but if you already have a Kindle 1 your mileage may vary. If you don’t have a Kindle or an E-reader yet, I recommend the Kindle 2 without reservation.

The main changes from the Kindle 1 are:

* The electronic paper display now shows 16 shades of gray, which makes photos and illustrations much clearer. I have a couple of books on digital photography that are greatly improved on the Kindle 2; with the Kindle 1 display the example photos were almost unuseable. Magazines and newspapers are also much better; anything with images or photos. Text is slightly more legible as well.

* The refresh rate of the display is a little faster, although not enormously so. The Kindle page at Amazon boasts 20% faster page turns — in my ad hoc tests, it seems slightly quicker but 20% is stretching it.

* That odd glittery menu wheel thing is gone, replaced by a four way thumb-operated joystick. The joystick allows more flexibility, but if you just want to pick something out of your home screen list, it’s slower than the old menu wheel. Not obnoxiously slower, but noticeable. The joystick comes in handy for managing books and magazines/newspapers, though; there are new options available by moving the stick left or right while an item is selected.

* The split keyboard has been replaced by a more standard mini-keyboard.

* No more asymmetrical look. It’s very slim, with rounded corners.

* A biggie on the ergonomics side: the control buttons on the left and right sides of the device now activate by clicking inward, and they require more positive pressure, a little like a mouse pad button on a laptop computer. This does away with one of the major annoyances of the Kindle 1 — you won’t accidentally click those buttons when picking it up by the edges, or shifting its position in your hands. The buttons are also somewhat smaller, further reducing the likelihood of accidental triggering.

* There is now a “Menu” button that brings up contextual menus for whatever screen you’re currently on, and a “Home” button that takes you back to your main list of stuff.

* The text-to-speech is very useable, although Amazon is now reportedly going to allow publishers to disable speech translation (to avoid cutting into their sales for audiobooks).

* No more user-accessible battery, but battery life has been increased by 25% according to Amazon. With the wireless connection off, you can go more than a week of fairly heavy use without needing to recharge.

* No SD card slot. But the internal storage has been increased to 2G.

* It has a nice combination USB cable that plugs into an AC adaptor to charge from a power outlet, or also charges the unit from a computer’s USB port.

And finally, here’s a problem I ran into with my Mac Pro desktop computer. When I plugged the USB cable from the Kindle 2 into the USB port on the front panel of the computer, things got very wonky. It took several minutes for the Kindle “disk drive” to appear on the desktop, and then it refused to eject or dismount.

I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with Amazon’s Kindle Support trying to figure out the issue, and while the woman I spoke with was very knowledgeable and friendly, we didn’t get to the bottom of it. We tried resetting the Kindle, and several other steps, all to no avail.

Then I realized I hadn’t tried plugging it into a different USB port; the Kindle 1 worked fine in the front port, so I just assumed the Kindle 2 would too. When I plugged it into a powered USB hub connected to the computer’s rear ports instead — bam, worked right away.

(Amazon’s Kindle Support is another big plus, by the way; if you have a problem, they follow up and really do try to get it working.)

Here’s an LGF associate link to the Amazon page for the Kindle 2. Buy yours through this link and we get a small cut from Mr. Bezos.

I have a Sony Reader. Love it- Sleak, razor thin, but no wireless, but so far I haven't missed that part at all. Clear as a bell to read. Only issue is a 350 page book comes out at like 1200 pages, and I read fast, so that's a lot of clicking from page to page. Ergonomically, it's sort of meant for right handed people- it comes with a leather cover that opens like a book and the page turning button is right at thimb height on the right. You can also turn pages with the left thumb, but it's not at a natural position.
Not trying to get anybody to buy a Sony, I wanted a Kindle, but the Sony is what I ended up with for my birthday- Whichever brand you buy, they are fabulous!

Oh, and downloaded 100 free classic books out of a choice of about 1000. Now I have everything from Adam Smith to Mark Twain to peruse at whim.

WHAT...

No way to increase the memory, 2 gig max. That would jinx it for me even if I could afford one right now. Two gig may sound like a lot, until Amazon or who ever starts offering this and that new kind of media on the device, and if you are getting something with a LOT of pictures, those 2 gigs can eat up fast.

I also like to be able to keep things archived on memory cards, and keep back ups off site of files I own, etc. This would limit the way I like to manage files and storage.

Removing the option of extra memory makes no sense to me what so ever.

The text-to-speech is very usable, although Amazon is now reportedly going to allow publishers to disable speech translation (to avoid cutting into their sales for audiobooks).

What, seriously? Who would listen to synthesized text over a well-produced audio book? Somehow I don't think there's any possible way that text-to-speech synthesis would cut into sales of audio books. The suggestion makes me suspect that someone doesn't know their market very well.

Well, I'm enjoying my Kindle. Not everything I want to read has a "kindle" version, but enough stuff does that it's worth it for me. And I keep hitting the "tell the publisher you want a Kindle version" button at Amazon.

My only problem was that the 'subscriptions" puzzled me, the way they work.

When I turn the Kindle on, whatever is on there from "subscriptions", goes to my "archived items", but then the new stuff appears after a little while.

I at first thought my subscriptions weren't working right, and it took me a couple of days to figure out what was going on.

Gitmo East

War On Terror: The administration says the detainees at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan cannot challenge their detentions and have no constitutional rights. Wouldn't that be a perfect place to send the Gitmo jihadists?

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that Guantanamo detainees had the legal right to challenge their detentions in American courts, four detainees held at Bagram thought they had a get out of jail free card. Following that ruling, petitions were filed on their behalf in a U.S. district court.

Apparently, in handling prisoners of war captured in the war on terror, the first law of real estate applies. The rights of detainees depend on location, location, location.

It is now the official opinion of the Obama administration that the detainees at Bagram have none while those at Gitmo, such as those who attacked the Navy destroyer Cole in a Yemeni harbor in 2000, have the same rights as any U.S. citizen.

/problem solved, just load them back on the plane they arrived at Gitmo in and ship them right back to where they came from in the first place!

I bought a kindle 2 for my wife last week. She was skeptical but she loves it and I am now a hero.
I have been searching online for the "free books" in public domain.

I do have to admit thought that I will be real pleased when the DRM issue is resolved.
I always liked buying, borrowing a book , enjoying it and lending (or selling ) it to a friend or acquaintance to enjoy and visa versa. This allows one to enjoy a wider variety of books and try books one might not ordinarily read.

The Kindle pretty much puts you out there on your own. You have to become much more selective about what you read since everything costs you $$$. I will be much less likely to spend money on books that are not my usual fare and this is a big negative. (of course, balanced by other positives)

As it is, I'll bet if you published this a significant percentage of dolts out there would think it was authentic and go "Hooray"...
And these same people vote.
Fuck.

Just for the record, I didn't write this. I found it on a Craigslist, and it was not attributed to anyone.

I lived in NC for 6 and I'll still drop into from time to time.

I'm still trying to figure out how my 5 year old who has never set foot in the South can drop into a perfect southern drawl.

Charles,

Good review. I might add a couple of thoughts though:

- Folders. This thing desparately needs folders to organize your books. I'm up to 8 screens worth of items on my home screen - I can see how a library approaching the device's capacity would be virtually unusable.

- Free books. You can find them here:

- Cases. Have you seen these things? Beautiful - really adds to the experience.

OT - Ha, the international community is going to be on Obama's hit list too!

"Geithner also said the administration plans to unveil a series of proposals in the coming months to limit the ability of international companies to avoid U.S. taxes.

Obama plans to propose legislation to limit U.S. companies' ability to shelter foreign earnings from taxation, Geithner said. The president also will move to limit wealthy Americans' ability to use tax havens to avoid taxation, Geithner added.

Obama's budget proposal last week included raising an additional $210 billion from "international enforcement" and "other tax reform policies" but provided few details. Geithner said those details will come in the next few months.

I'm saving up for a Kindle. We are absolutely drowning in books, and they are getting the upper hand.

Has anyone read The Glass Castle? It is one of the most cleverly written books I 've ever read. One of my favorite parts is where the author explains that in second grade the author's father made her do her math homework in binary numbers saying that it is far superior to based10. Every day she had to race to school and re-copy her work back into regular numbers. One day she didn't have time, and she was forced to turn in her work in binary. The humorless teacher asked her, "Is this a joke?"

It is in my top 10 favorite memoirs of all time and has an astounding twist at the end. Mr DT loved it, too.

188 itellu3times  Tue, Mar 3, 2009 4:17:48pm

A little scientific humor.

The 2 hundred million ton penny drops

A Posteriori. Revising what you know about something based on the observed evidence. Recalculating your probabilities on the strength of how the coin turned out. The arithmetic should be simple: eight hundred billion dollars and the fact that a penny weighs 2.5 grams means that a two hundred million ton penny has dropped. It’s the size of two thousand aircraft carriers. Even solid Obama supporters are slowly approaching the gigantic coin to see if has turned up heads or tails.

It's true that kids quickly adapt speech/accent to their surroundings. Moving around as a kid in the military allows me to generally recognize a given accent within a few hundred miles.

I too learned to speak 'normal' when my dad retired and I found myself having to forgo the Brit accent I had acquired over the last six year - to Hoosier. This was not done without a great deal of effort and feedback from my peers.

Ed the Head was there every day after school to beat the crap out of me until I learned the culture and proper speech patterns. It took a while but I now speak perfect Hoosier when prompted. Thanks Ed!

I have to agree that Folders would be a great addition to organize my collection.

Also, if you have a book title that is somewhat long, it clips the title (also the author's name suffers from this, too). As a result, I have Harvard Collection volumes that clip off the volume number, making it hard to know what is what. You can't change the text size on this list (why?) and they didn't figure out a way to wrap the title to a second line.

If I'm missing something obvious in the way of settings, please share.

It was very, very odd. It reminded me of something that a gorgeous friend of our said. She was a young, stunning, real estate agent living on a houseboat in DC. I asked her why she didn't date more. She said, "I'd love to, but almost all the available men I meet are gay. It is nearly impossible to find an unattached man in DC that isn't gay."

Hmmm. What did you say her name was?

The Kindle is an interesting device. I've looked into ePaper devices for a while but I'm sticking with my Nokia N800 internet tablet for my ebooks. While it's still an LCD display and not as easy to read in daylight it works just fine for me. Plus plays videos and surfs the web so there's a plus. :)

I'm actually more excited at the moment for OLED displays than eInk. eInk is getting there but I think is about 5 years behind OLED's.

her. at some point she is going to have to get beyond the "feature the arms"

Madonna was a client of a friend of mine. She's a marketing genius. She's not especially talented artistically. Her book was personal porn. Utterly without redeeming social value except as a kind of diary of her sexual fantasies, which she lived out. It made her another fortune. But the pornography was very, very cold and calculating. It was perverse, but not really passionate. There was no love or warmth. Just her stylized self-worship in which other people are props. Kind of like Madonna herself.

So I respect her marketing abilities. Her "art"? Not so much.

My daughter would serve at their banquets, and she said it was astounding to walk into a room with 200 cadets all in uniform.

Sounds like my girlfriend, she loves a man in a uniform (esp officer's uniform).

I promised to pull out the uniforms I wore going to California Maritime Academy just for her.

Arrgh! Day #5 of Verizon being unable to turn my Broadband back on after THEY shut it off by mistake. An hour on the phone with them today must not have been enough.

So I have purchased a bottle of wine and soon I will begin drinking it.

The first drink goes out to "Unsecured Wireless Connection #2".

Hey! Check this out.. awhile ago flicked a big ass from my cigar into my glass of Merlot..
Then i drank it.. I was screaming some really bad words caused quite the stir when mama ran in asking what was the matter...
It is at that moment in life knowing you are giving ammo to jokes for the rest of your life that the truth or lie comes out..

re: #344 buzzsawmonkey

Not entirely true. Finishing schools exist precisely for this purpose; if one is past the age for finishing school, there are coaches who can and will provide such instruction, for a price of course.

There are some things about style and taste that cannot be learned, but if one is deficient in this area one can at least do two things; first, choose someone who you trust as an advisor who knows better, and second, set some ground rules and stick with them.

For example, everyone has colors that they look good in, and colors they do not. That doesn't stop certain things in the wrong color from looking attractive and tempting--but one can resist that lure. Also, certain colors project power better than others; many men look good in brown suits, but a brown suit does not project the power that navy or grey does. Black is a difficult color; it can project elegance and strength; it can project hipness, which usually has nothing to do with elegance or strength; it can make the wearer look like a cheap hood.

Knowing a few basic ground rules and relying on a trusted advisor would go a long way towards making Michelle Obama look better and feel better in public situations--and thus project less of unease and insincerity that seem to radiate from her now.

Who is going to be brave enough to tell her she needs help? Not Barak, although he's already known to be working late into the night like Bill Clinton. No need to rush home for an early bedtime.

1) Too expensive-- the Kindle itself will drop in price, and the books, at $10/pop aren't much of a bargain-- I can get actual paper books for less.

get rid of the ruffles and froo froo. also get rid of the trendy stuff .
a woman her age looks desperate when she shows up in 20 something styles.
stay w/ the classics. she would be good w/ tapered pants. a dress line that skims the hips. maybe empire bodice. sweater sets. tailored blouses.

I would like to ask everyone how the Obama/08 bumper sticker saturation is looking.

I have been traveling to/from my latest gig for like a year.

I like to think of myself as observant... who knows.

Obama bumper stickers really freaking annoy me, so I notice them.

Two, three, four or more weeks ago my travel would have passed anywhere from 30 to 50 of them. (Can't tell exactly because I didn't keep records...)

This mornings travel... six.

This does include Maryland/DC area.

Just a random observation.

Hard to focus on the dark vastness of nothing.

Michelle reminds me of the old church saying. 2 New Parishoners asks the Reverend what the church is like. Rev. asks what their last church was like. One parishoner responds that it had a bunch of mean, nasty people. "This church is just the same." Next Parishoner said that he came from a loving caring and compassionate church. "This church is just the same," replied the reverend.

Michelle's mean place comment said more about her although Chicago run by Democrats has to be hell on earth.

That one addresses diversity in station ownership, nothing to do with the fairness doctrine. i.e. with the XM/Sirus merger puts all of satellite radio is under one ownership. Even then, that bill "encourages" diversity and does not mandate it.

First Lady Michelle Obama--who has appeared sleeveless in public these past weeks despite the chill, finally is dressing winter.

Maybe her husband should try and go sleeveless in the cold winter weather, to help him give a tougher appearance in the eyes of the public. In that way, he would be following in William Henry Harrison's footsteps.

Gergen:

The arguments in favor of his current approach – what might be called a “big bang” – are powerful both substantively and politically. With health care costs exploding – they will average $8,160 per person this year and are estimated to reach $13,100 by 2018 – it is clear that reform of health care is a key to long-term economic strength.

If Gergen's numbers are correct here, I think we could better afford that kind of increase (8k up to 13k) than what the 'cure' is going to cost. I doubt he's factored in the coming inflation, either.

Remember, you haven't realized the loss unless you've sold.
Inflation will send the value of our deflated portfolios soaring.
Inflation will make our debts shrink in comparison.
Those on fixed incomes which are not fully indexed, like most pensioners and retirees, are the ones who will bear the brunt of the coming inflationary spiral.
INFLATION WILL SET US FREE./

On the Fairness Doctrine in new clothes:

"...as FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell has observed, people should be wary of the Fairness Doctrine under a different name, because "If your brand is controversial, create a new brand." These news brands include buzzwords like "diversity of ownership," "diversity of viewpoint," "openness," or "public obligations," all of which translate into increased government regulation, mandates, and control over content.

Promoting diversity of ownership is one way in which the government could control content by allocating licenses on the basis of politics. And who will decide what constitutes "diversity of viewpoint" or "public interest obligations"? Federal regulators, of course."

College? What the hell for? Make them do a stint in the military. Make sure their first priority is knowing that where they live is a benefit that money cannot buy. THAT would be earning 10 mil.

Good Call! I'd do that! But really..We raised 5 kids..And you have to go with their soul, spirit and dreams..
You always keep your childs best interest in mind...

I would bet, I love those odds, but no such bill is coming, the left needs the likes of Rush too much anyway. This week, the MSN is talking about the Steele/Rush fight, and not the tanking market.

Put up REAL money, I'll give you REAL odds.

re: #609 buzzsawmonkey

One last comment on Michelle Obama's clothing.

Her outfits are designed to be noticed. This in itself displays deep insecurity; people who know they have arrived do not need to blare out their presence with their clothing, because they know they themselves are enough. They wear their clothes, and do not let their clothes wear them. Confident looks boring because it doesn't have anything to prove.

Michelle does not know this/has not learned this. She's dressing like the church ladies I see in Brooklyn on Sunday morning, each of whom is trying to outdo the other with the brightest, loudest outfit and the fanciest hat. Wake up, Michelle; you're First Lady of the most powerful nation on earth. Look like it; accept the mantle that the people of this nation have graciously, if in my opinion misguidedly, bestowed upon you, and realize that wrapped in the mantle of the popular vote you do not need the neon.

That would take humility and grace and dignity. All absent in this woman, IMO.

Me too.
So quick, let's go out and borrow all we can afford to carry and lock in at today's low rates. Then let's buy as much income producing real estate as we can get our greedy mitts on with as little down as possible. Then let's sit back and watch the value of our portfolios head through the roof.

re: #611 Iron Fist

If you don't think people are talking about the stock market crash, you are living a very sheltered, no cocooned life. It is the topic everyone is talking about. I know Rush and Michael Steele exchanged some hostile words, but so what? Do you never have a fight with your wife? Internal squabbles over priorities is a healthy discourse.

You don't see that happening with the Democrats, where iron loyalty to the party line is not only expected, it is the death knell of your carreer to deviate from the Party doctrine on almost everything.

No question the drop is being covered, but the MSN loves a good political fight and is all over the Rush thing, and the left is fanning the flames. It's almost as big a story as the first lady is on here. :)

I disagree.
They want to shut down Rush. Sure, it plays to their agenda to have infighting on the conservative side. But if they could silence Rush and the rest, it would happen.
The Left is FASCIST!

Rush cracks me up, but he keeps the GOP marginalized by pissing on any moderate voices, that's why the left likes him.

Re: The Kindle 2 -

One Question, and one only - were you happy when you bought it/got it/used it?

If all'y'all were - No further questions are necessary. I understand your AppleiPhone, being a fellow AT&T'er with a MOTO 9 Global. 'doze v. Apple is a foregone rivalry. Mine is 'doze, yours is Apple - Both Good - Like Chevy vs. Ford.

Have been reading stuff online for years. Pray tell, what is the advantage of owning and using $360 worth of Amazon Technology?

re: #617 buzzsawmonkey

If you don't think that the Left would concoct a "Rush" once the real one has been destroyed, you need to get out that dogeared old copy of 1984 and reread the passages on the Two Minutes Hate and the manufacture of Emmanuel Goldstein.

Good point, but why bother, Rush is doing fine, and no one had to concoct him, he's a natural. The base loves him, not the the middle or the left. You could not find a better wedge guy.

Yes. The Kindle 1 has 6 font sizes; the Kindle 2 has 12.

Because a false opponent that you have invented yourself is easier to control than a real one.

Maybe that explains the unexplainable Anne Coulter, she a agent for the left, heck she even dated a leftie. :)

632 Former SSG  Wed, Mar 4, 2009 7:02:05am

I got my Kindle last Wednesday and love it.

Although it does not have removable storage, it will archive (anytime). If you run out of space, and delete something, you can get it back later for free.

You can get 2 and sync them, so you can share with other kindle users.

I bought "Little Fuzzy" and 11 other works by the same author for 80 cents, complete works of Dickens, including papers about him, for $4.79. I can get free books and convert them, and I can upload PDF for 10 cents a document or convert them myself with freeware. The basic web works for blogs, so I don't need the subscriptions, except they seem more user-friendly. Instapundit says it works (but not easily) for blogging. I haven't tried to check my email yet, but if that works, I will sell my netbook!

I spent slightly more for this than I did for a netbook, and use it more already.
