The Media Slants … Right?

Media • Views: 2,950

You may have seen reports on a study from Indiana University concluding that the mainstream media is biased—in favor of the Republican Party. (Yes, really.)

But according to Copious Dissent, there are severe problems in the study’s methodology: Analysis of the Indiana University Study on Republican Media Bias.

Overall, this study did not find statistically significant evidence to support the vast majority of the claims made by the authors. Some statistically significant data even contradict the authors’ claims. In fact, the editorializing conducted in Chapter 5’s discussion section goes so far outside the four corners of the study that it borders on pure advocacy. As a result, most if not all of the headlines seen around the Internet and on Television based on this study have no merit whatsoever.

Given the leanings of the academic world I can see why a university study would find the media has a right leaning tendency. It’s all relative.

You folks have it all wrong. The media does slant right.

It just depends on where you sit.

If you’re a Marxist, anything that doesn’t hew to your worldview is a rightward slant. If you’re a leftist, you think that anything that is even moderately to the center is right-slanting.

What is so mind boggling is that even the media elites themselves admit there’s a serious left-ward tilt. This study is so far out on the fringe that it defies description.

I guess they’re just laying the groundwork to claiming that when the media begins its inevitable dissection of Obama’s horrid policies that they’ll claim it’s a right-wing press inventing the details, rather than the fact that the left is eating its own.

If you’re going to do something do it PROPERLY. What REALLY annoys me about this “study” is not the fact that they’re lying, but rather the fact that they’re lying poorly. It’s easy to lie with statistics. You want to push a point of view, fine- state your point of view and then “engineer” the data to support it. DON’T try do do an “honest” study and make stupid assertions that the data don’t support- that insults the readers’ intelligence!

More on Michelle Obama going out of her way to insult the UK.

Sarah Brown gave Sasha and Malia Obama an outfit each from Topshop, which has just opened its first American store in New York. She also picked six children’s books by British authors which are shortly to be published in America.

But the British press has already accused the Obamas of gaffing over the gifts they gave in return. The Obamas gave the Browns two models of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, to take home to sons Fraser and John. Though Mrs Brown’s choice of gifts was praised as thoughtful, Mrs Obama’s choice of gifts for Fraser and John was ‘solipsistic’.

‘Mrs Brown may have two boys but she certainly knows the way to a little girl’s heart,’ columnist Sarah Vine wrote in the Times. ‘These were gifts chosen in the true spirit of present-giving: to please the recipient, not the giver.’

Giving the Browns’ two young boys a helicopter was ‘fair enough’, she said.

But she added: ‘Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter.

‘Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.

What does our learless feeder give to PM Brown?

25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.

How many pen holders made from the wood of the HMS Resolute are there? Which also match the oval desk’s origins?

Professor Called Cops on Student Who Discussed Gun Control in Class

Last October, John Wahlberg and two classmates at Central Connecticut State University gave an oral presentation for a communications class taught by Professor Paula Anderson. The assignment was to discuss a “relevant issue in the media,” and the students presented their view that the death toll in the April 2007 Virginia Tech shooting massacre would have been lower if professors and students had been carrying guns.

That night, police called Wahlberg, a 23-year-old senior, and asked him to come to the station. When he arrived, they they read off a list of firearms that were registered in his name and asked where he kept them.

Media Malpractice: How Barack Obama Got Elected and Sarah Palin was Targeted.

I bought a copy of the Media Malpractice DVD and attended the premiere at the National Press Club during CPAC. It is absolute definite proof of media bias and an excellent film. I found myself laughing at the ridiculousness of the media deception showcased in the film, but was horrified to see the extent of it. As long as the press is so thoroughly corrupt, America is in danger.

Obama’s Intelligence Blunder
By Jon Chait
Saturday, February 28, 2009; Page A13

Most of President Obama’s “missteps” to date have been Washington peccadilloes of the “let’s find something to complain about” sort. But Obama has made one major mistake that has attracted little public attention: his appointment of Charles Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council. Freeman was attacked by pro-Israel activists, but the contretemps over Freeman’s view of Israel misses the broader problem, which is that he’s an ideological fanatic.

The most extreme manifestation of Freeman’s realist ideology came out in a leaked e-mail he sent to a foreign policy Internet mailing list. Freeman wrote that his only problem with what most of us call “the Tiananmen Square Massacre” was an excess of restraint:

“[T]he truly unforgivable mistake of the Chinese authorities was the failure to intervene on a timely basis to nip the demonstrations in the bud, rather than — as would have been both wise and efficacious — to intervene with force when all other measures had failed to restore domestic tranquility to Beijing and other major urban centers in China. In this optic, the Politburo’s response to the mob scene at ‘Tian’anmen’ stands as a monument to overly cautious behavior on the part of the leadership, not as an example of rash action… .

In 2007, Shibley noted, a student at Hamline University in Minnesota was suspended after writing a letter to an administrator arguing that carrying concealed weapons on campus may help prevent tragedies like the one at Virginia Tech. You folks have it all wrong. The media does slant right.

It just depends on where you sit.

If you’re a Marxist, anything that doesn’t hew to your worldview is a rightward slant. If you’re a leftist, you think that anything that is even moderately to the center is right-slanting.

I was just about to say the same thing. I have long time friends who laugh out loud when I say, for example, that Chris Mathews is on the left. They’ll look at you like your nuts, and tell you with a straight face that Mathews is on the right. My brother in law insists that NPR leans to right of center.

It goes without saying then that these same people honestly believe that Bush was a fascist akin to Mussolini…or worse.

Oh no - that is too much! You are a real kidder aren’t you? I needed the laugh. This whole administration is just totally incompetent.

There’s a whole social sub-group of old Vietnam era US draft dodgers up here. You can quickly identify them by their gray pony tails & peace buttons on their tatty old vests. Many of them managed to settle into jobs in academia, the media or used book stores. Tedious fusty old hippies.

More gifts, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

As if The One has the time to read some dull book about some dead old white guy.

I have that set (not first edition) and it’s spectacular. Obama doesn’t have a clue how valuable a gift that is.

It has. We have an intelligence chief who has been an agent of our enemies, the Chinese and the Saudis.
He should be banned from all security-related work, and only be allowed to talk to government officials if he is registered as a lobbyist and a foreign agent.

Next up, Tony Soprano will head the FBI.

Save’s our enemies all that sulking around and spying shit. He’ll just email them what every they ask for.

Some who espouse the banning of guns are convinced that anyone who supports the 2nd Amendment, or owns firearms, target shoots or hunts… is an unpredictable, murderous animal who will use their firearms in revenge for any perceived slight. The objects themselves are “demonic” - possessed of an evil will of their own and able to create violence… and that no-one should even talk about them let alone touch them (especially children!) or learn how to use them for personal protection.

This is a true phobia. I bet the professor later worked herself into a panic attack and was afraid the student might “get” her with his guns, then called the Police.

I think the professor is in need of a psychological evaluation.

“Some ideas are so ridiculous that only an intellectual can believe them”

Defining ‘doublethink’:
“To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which canceled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself — that was the ultimate subtlety; consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.”

Never underestimate the ability of intellectuals to talk away the obvious. One thing they cannot talk away, however, is for whom reporters vote. They overwhelmingly vote for Democrats. In 1992, for example, “89% — nine out of 10 — Washington reporters and bureau chiefs voted for Clinton … and 7% voted for George Bush.” “Bush got a higher percentage of votes in the liberal congressional districts of Berkeley, Calif., and Cambridge, Mass., than he did from reporters in Washington.” No doubt this disparity was repeated in 2000 and 2004, and must have been near 99% for The One in 2008. Only professors would have the temerity to release a “study” claiming that these reporters are biased in favor of Republicans.

I posted this on Copious Dissent and will repost here:

One variable I have never heard discussed is a variation of “last say.” The media will often juxtapose two stories on opposite sides of an issue in the interests of equal time/equal say. The second person/side to speak has the opportunity to answer the first person’s claims, and is also more likely to linger in the viewer’s/listener’s memory. My anecdotal experience is that the side the media favors tends to get the “equal time/last say.” I would like to see hard data on that. It’s an easy enough experiment to design.

I see/hear this consistently on Israeli/Palestinian issues. The Israeli always comes first. I am becoming increasingly attentive to the same bias in Dem/Rep stories.

There is very little Pravda in Izvestia. There is very little Izvestia in Pravda.

/Soviet-era saying

Actually, the Russian put it in more absolute terms: Nyet pravdy, meaning “there isn’t any truth” or “there’s no truth at all.” (Not to be confused with Nyet pravde, which you could translate as “Just say no to truth” — word endings are everything in Russian!)

“There’s little truth” would be Malo pravdy, and you could optionally put ochen at the beginning, to express “very.”

re: #219 Throbert McGee

And just in case anyone’s wondering the very obvious:

Nyet narkotikam = “(Just say) No to drugs”

Nyet narkotikov = “There aren’t any drugs”

Da, u nas nyet narkotikov, = “♪♫ Yes, we have no narcotics! ♫♪ “

As a scientist ( a REAL scientist not a social scientist) I thought I would comment on the comment by Copious Dissent on the importance of statistical significance. Technically when one says that their results are NOT statistically significant what they are saying is that they cannot rule out chance as being the cause of the results that they observe (in this case that the media slants right). In a real scientific journal if you attempted to treat your results as supporting your hypothesis while those same results were NOT statistically significant you would NOT get published.
