Ayers, Churchill to appear at CU student event

Former Colorado professor Ward Churchill was vilified for comparing Sept. 11 victims to Nazi Adolf Eichmann. Former Weather Underground member William Ayers was vilified as a radical.

On Thursday, they'll appear together at a student rally for academic freedom at the University of Colorado-Boulder, days before Churchill, who was fired on plagiarism charges, goes to court in an attempt to get his job back.

Churchill, Ayers and writer-activist Derrick Jensen are to speak at an event titled, "Forbidden Education and the Rise of Neo-McCarthyism." Sponsors are Students for True Academic Freedom, the 180 Degree Shift at the 11th Hour, and the Student Environmental Action Coalition.

No doubt that an underlying assumption about attractive women is that they slept their way up the ladder. From all indications she is an incredibly competent governor and hard worker and honest. What more do people want?

For some reason that I cannot quite figure out liberals respect and admire Hillary more than a type of woman like Palin.

Imagine waking up from a coma after 25 years and having your two grown daughters at your bedside - one Sarah - and one Hillary.

One is a governor, with an adoring husband, and 5 beautiful children, is slim and attractive, a private business owner, and is known for her honesty and integrity.

The other is dumpy, married to a man who is a serial adulterer, has had episodes of physical violence in the marriage, and has one daughter who she forgot to retrieve from hotel room while on a business trip (in russia) (who works for a hedge fund.) She is known to be conniving, dishonest and ruthless, and has a cackle that will peel paint.

Why is there even a question as to who is more competent?

The media judged both Palin and Obama only on their appearance and stopped digging any deeper than that. They became intoxicated with the thought of "America's first African American President" and stifled any real investigation into Obama's background and qualifications.

With Palin, I think they perceived a real threat, particlarly when they saw how energized the GOP base became. Thus, her looks became the avenue of attack. They placed enormous pressure on her, basically trying to make every move a mistake.

The GOP old guard also didn't step up and help - I'm thinking of Peggy Noonan, here.

McCain and his b-team band of staffers didn't do her any favors either.

I think that's one of the most spectacularly badly designed studies I've ever seen. How they thought it would "measure" the impact of Palin's looks on the election is beyond me.

Start with their sample: College undergrads. Excuse me? How many were likely McCain/Palin voters to begin with? They were going to find more Jolie voters than that.

It may be that America is not ready for an attractive woman as president. I happen to agree that beautiful women have a hard time being taken seriously. But this study doesn't come close to being evidence for that.

Excellent comment DT, wish I could give you a 100 updings for that one.
The funny thing is that of all four candidates (Obama, Mcain Biden and Palin) she was by far the most qualified to GOVERN. She'd one it already - as a mayor and as a governor. She'd had to come up with a budget in each job, figure out the needs of her constituents, find a way to meet those needs (usually, but not always meaning taxes and attracting businesses and jobs) and lay it all out and have a legislature approve it. That's more "governing experience" than Obama, Biden and McCain put together.
Foreign policy? She would have done better, but certainly no worse than Obama (I don't think anyone on the current political scene could have done worse than he has).

Peggy Noonan is a turncoat. I agree appearances weigh heavy in the leftie decision making process. After all, the NYT had a front page story today about how O is already beginning to gray.

When you think about the broadcast media in particular, they have so much pressure on themselves re: their appearance (I just read a story about Rachel Maddow's need to "glam up"). Really, it's like they're just filtering the rest of the world through their own experiences. We all do that, but they act as if they are above it somehow.

I didn't know if anyone was joking. Because I work for a non-profit organization, I get a lot of "well, you take public funds." Well, we do, some. There is a fund called the SCFD (Scientific and Cultural Facilities District) which collects 1 penny on every 10 dollars spent in the area. And then that money is split between over 400 organizations. And not evenly. The Denver Center for the Performing arts gets 14 million, we get 35-50 thousand, depending on the year.

Most of our funding is patrons, members and a few private funding sources. We are very good stewards of the money we make from ticket sales, and the quality of our work more than makes up for the little bit of funding that we do get.

We generally stay away from playing the grant game. That can take up so much of your time, you have no time to actually produce a quality product.

re: #142 MandyManners

That explains my sudden, post-nasal drip.

I written here before that we are on the NJ state health plan because New Jersey has frozen out or crowded out other insurers in the the state that don't automatically accept any applicant even if that person is in the middle of very expensive treatment. My alumni insurance is illegal in NJ.

Anyway, today we went to the dentist where my son was to have a filing. He came out with a cap on a back tooth. I was suspicious. I had read an undercover review of dental offices who over-diagnose problems so they can bill at the higher level. And it is an odd office with all these signs about various rules about where you can sit, and who can sit in the waiting room, etc. It's very controling. From the looks of the other clients, they are on the state insurance too.

Another time I used the county health facility to get an immunization for my son. It was a nightmare. Not only did it take about 2.5 hours, but they herded large groups of us from room to room, and had us all stand up at the same time, and move enmass to the next room, then snake along several corridors until we were next in line. It had to have been a firecode violation to have so many of standing in the hallways.

When I went for a free breast exam, they scheduled 20 people at 9am, and 20 more at 1pm. I finally had to leave, but I asked them why they had such a bizarre way of scheduling. The girl said because so many people don't show up. I said maybe they would show up if they didn't have to wait for hours and hours. Morons.

Good luck America.

re: #32 Iron Fist

This strikes me as having been an answer in search of a question. By which I mean that the so-called "researchers" had a position that they wanted to put forward (i.e. being attractive hurt Palin), so they went looking to create the data that supported their conclusions. One minor flaw in this thesis is that Barrack Obama is an attractive man. If Palin's looks hurt her, what about the Messiah's looks?

What the "researchers" meant to say is that Palin is a poopyhead, and that if she'd been elected they would have wet the bed, screamed for their mommy, and sucked their thumb for four years. These "researchers" are "scientists" in the same way a river carp is a koi.

Good point. What the election showed, in part, was that the country doesn't have as much of a racial problem as it does a problem with sexism. Just look at how the media treated Hillary (who I am no fan of). If a woman cries, she's weak. If she doesn't, she's a heartless bitch.

As far as her "grasp of the issues" I think it's actually fair to say that Palin had not really paid much attention to national/ issues, and was completely caught by surprise when she was suddenly throw into a national campaign - it showed at times.

That being said, her accomplishments - which exceeding that of Obama's (which isn't hard to do) were largely ignored. My favorite was that she did more for the cause of energy independence that all of Congress - she got the ball rolling on a pipeline through Canada. The project had festered for decades, but she got it going - including international negotiations (with Canada) in her first term. My second favorite was that she had indisputably dealt harshly with corruption in politics, while the Lightworker only talked about it (and it's becoming clear that it was all talk).

It's amazing how many people claimed to be mortally fearful of Palin as just a VP, while being completely unconcerned about Obama having the same weaknesses (and more). My sister even picked on her having gone to college on a beauty pageant scholarship. So while at the same time she was lamenting how women are discriminated against in politics and elsewhere, she was guilty of the same.

Oh, and let's not forget about the new Senator from New York. She's also young, attractive, and has an infant child. I'm still waiting to hear about the news stories condemning her for being a "bad mother" for taking that big-deal federal job, or for how she's a dimwit. Oh - that's right - she's got that "D" thing going on, so the rules are different for her. So there's that going on too - the media bias.

“It wasn’t her appearance per se” that soured people on Palin, Heflick said in an interview. “It was the effect her appearance had on their perception of her competence and humanity. Those variables made people less likely to vote for her.” (Not surprisingly, the participants’ feelings about Jolie did not influence their political opinions, whether they focused on her looks or personality.)

This sums up how vapid, shallow and empty we've become as a society. And people like this vote? Heaven help us.
We need a fucking voting competency test. You need to be able to demostrate that you have at least 2 brain cells in your head that can occasionally collide and produce a thought.

Peggy Noonan is a turncoat. I agree appearances weigh heavy in the leftie decision making process. After all, the NYT had a front page story today about how O is already beginning to gray.

Scientists are beginning to gather clues that stress can hasten the graying process, but there is no scientific evidence demonstrating a cause-and-effect relationship.

Oh, I forgot.

1) Let's remember that choosing Palin brought McCain's polling numbers up even with Obama - so she helped his campaign. Those numbers tanked at the exact same time as the financial system imploded. So McCain didn't lose because of Palin - she was an asset.

2) Oh, and I'm sure we all remember that Palin seemed to have a pretty good grasp of how many states there are. So there was that media bias too. Obama, and the gaffe machine he ran, could do no wrong, as far as the media was concerned. Palin, in contrast, was held responsible for dippy things said by Tina Fey, for cryin' out loud!

re: #174 Optimizer

I wish I could give you 1000 updings....

"Who can sit in the waiting room"? What's that all about?

They had me sign a form that said it was mandatory that I accompany my child in the exam room. So I left my 13 year old and 11 year old in the waiting room. Then they told me that they had a rule that I had to stay with the 13 year old and 11 year old, who were both sitting quietly watching a movie. Another sign on the door at the reception area said: You must wait to be escorted back to an exam room. I thought: What's been going on here that they've had to make signs and rules about these things - some of which contradict each other.

Boy ain't that the truth. If someone could look at this past election dispassionately - and ignore Obama's stupendous amount of money and having the MSM in his back pocket - if voters really THOUGHT about who was better suited to GOVERN the US, there's just no way they don't pick McCain/Palin, cause the other side's experience is all in foreign affairs and THAT comes because Joe Biden sat his ass in a senate subcommittee seat.
This is all bullshit about Palin - she was qualified to be mayor of a small town, she was qualified to be Governor of a State all because she tended to look out for her constitutents. Period. McCain, despite my differences with him on a bunch of things was at least clearly in Love with America and Americans - his constituency.
I don't even think the Jury's out on Obama, I don't think by anything he's said or done that he loves America or is necessarily looking out for OUR best interests, just his own.

To be fair, it's spreading to fixed-rate holders as well, but it does seem to indicate that - barring a policy that just tells these people they don't have to pay at all - the "Making Home Affordable" program is just throwing more money at a problem that's not going to go away.

She scares the holy bejebbers out of the left.

It's not just politics. Take a middle-aged journo stuck in a declining industry, on his third divorce (or her second), hair falling out, and with a drinks habit that costs them all the money that the alimony does not devour. Face him or her with this radiant creature, successful in her career, one husband, five children, looking a good ten years younger than her age, bright happy smile, and crowds of admirers. And tell me that the impulse to tear down and destroy will not take over. I have seen the same murderous and otherwise inexplicable attitude in the matter of British footballer David Beckham, whom the press has been trying to destroy for years for apparently no other reason than that he is handsome, good at his job, and has a rich and pretty wife and three nice children. Jealousy is a powerful impulse.

Pure double standard. Yes, she could have performed better in the interview, but if we shall be intellectually honest, any candidate out there has given bad interviews.

To simply brush off the media is ridiculous. From the moment her name was announced, she became a target for political assassination by the media. Hell, she even threw it back in their face during a subsequent interview regarding the double standard, and the guy laughed it off, confirming it as truth.

Although I am in Pennsylvania, and by the time my state gets to vote, it usually does not matter, you actually helped me make my mind up, and vote for Rudy despite my social issues with him.

To have her shoulder all the blame from one interview, and allow him to skate given his total inclusion of the "oh's, um's, ah's" squared when attempting public speech minus an available teleprompter can't hold water. re: #139 Killgore Trout

Palin's look might have had an effect but what really hurt Palin was Palin. It wasn't unfair media coverage or some grand liberal conspiracy. I tried to like Palin until I heard her interview with Dobson. She is responsible for her own failure.

You watched her interview with James Dobson? Jeez, I didn't even know she had an interview with Dobson.

Again, McCain let the religiocons pressure him into a religiocon VP nominee. Of the possibilities, it probably came down to Palin, Jindal, or Pawlenty. My preference of the 3 was Pawlenty....

But I really wanted him to pick Rudy. I'm not a Romney fan, but there's no question he would have been far better choice. McCain could have sent Mitt back to handle Bush, Paulson, Pelosi, and Reid and continued campaigning. And Romney would have wiped the floor with Gibson, Couric, and Biden.

Palin's biggest deficit isn't her looks.

She scares the holy bejebbers out of the left.

She is completely self sufficient. She needs ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FROM GOVERNMENT and OWES NOTHING TO GOVERNMENT.

She can go out kill the moose, dress it and serve it. It's a metaphor.

The left depends on the interchange, they give, but it's really a buying the person. You get something, you owe you loyalty, and once you are bought you stay bought.

Palin demonstrates viscerally the sovereign individual the left hates the most.

I agree with this, but I think you and Killgore are talking about two different sets of anti-Palin voter.

You've explained why leftists would want to volunteer and get-out-the-vote against Palin. Killgore (and, citing other reasons, Charles) have explained why centrists would get worried about Palin, thus quietly showing up at the polls to vote against.

Palin's appearance and the visceral reaction it causes will differ between these two parties: the former act on pure tribal hatred, and the latter just roll their eyes at her TV appearances.

The Republicans lost because the left own the media and the culture, the left did a better job vilifying the right, the left spent 8 years beating up on Bush, the left had a better ground game. Sarah Palin helped McCain energize the converted, but little else.

btw - I spoke with a very influential community business leader today in Boulder. I asked him what he thought of the run on the banks that occurred back in September before the election. He said that he was certain Soros was behind it and he too thought it was a planned event to help Obama.

Pure double standard. Yes, she could have performed better in the interview, but if we shall be intellectually honest, any candidate out there has given bad interviews...To have her shoulder all the blame from one interview, and allow him to skate given his total inclusion of the "oh's, um's, ah's" squared when attempting public speech minus an available teleprompter can't hold water. I find his eloquence suspect at best...

Absolutely agree with you. The O's interviews either seemed completely staged with questions given beforehand, or the um's and uh's. Also escaping any media notice at all were his constant gaffes - "visited 58 states with one more to go", etc... not one peep from the media. Biden's lack of historical knowledge was sickening, again with no media attention.

Should Sarah have been better prepared by McCain's handlers? Yes. They threw her out too soon to the wolves; should've made the conservative talk radio route before going to Couric and Gibson.

re: #272 Spare O'Lake

Sex appeal is the least of Sarah Palin's problems.

The religious beliefs many attribute to Sarah Palin are largely the fabrications of left-wing propagandists, which unfortunately were eagerly snarfed up by some soreheads on the right who were angry that somebody else didn't get the VP selection. Same with the non-existent "book banning". True, she is pro-choice, but I distinctly remember a press conference when she was asked about her stance on abortion, and she affirmed she was against it, but she was in favor of contraception. This was then falsely reported in the media (and by some bloggers) that she was against contraception.

Personally, (and I haven't set foot in a church for 30 years except for weddings and funerals,) I don't find Sarah's evangelical beliefs half as dismaying or kooky as the Global Warming cult, or the Rev. Wright cult.

In summary, about 96.4% of the stuff that's been written or said about Sarah is pure fecal matter.

A woman has to be three times as good to get one third the votes.

That's in a normal race. This one, with the media besotted with Obama, the ratio is even worse -and at that she STILL almost brought McCain to the point of winning. Without her, he would have gotten 10% of the vote. And I love McCain, but the odds were astronomical once the media made their choice.

Notwithstanding, yes, she could have been better prepared in more than one interview. I think public communications is great attribute, but certainly does not portend a good or bad leader.

I do not need anymore evidence the media is not just an innocent bystander in our legislative process. I'm sure if given 2 hours, we could cite at least 100 instances, where media bias in the arena of politics is totally blatant. I don't require 101 instances to shore up my opinion.

Therefore, I see no benefit in acting as if our political landscape is being played on level ground.

After I reply, I'm going back to upding your comment, especially for the opening lines. The part about the Obama's attractiveness doesn't work because of the way they set up the "study."

"Building upon 1980s research suggesting attractive women in high-status jobs are perceived as less competent"

So much for 80s research. It's all a load of crap, but the article is clear that it's about women.

A plus. An indicator of competence. Her religious beliefs cause me some heartburn, but if she keeps lengthening her record of keeping them separate from government (and doesn't drift into any VB type eddy), then I'm ok with even that. No one is talking about being fair here. The facts are the facts, and when the media goes after someone to smear them, it has a powerful effect.

Let's talk about Obama's religion then. He was a devout follower of the Rev. Wright, and we've all seen his hateful, vicious, racist diatribes against our country coming from his own mouth. Do you not think O was involved with an over-the-top church? C'mon, his church is out there.

As to her lack of experience - the Bush doctrine is a ridiculous example. Biden couldn't even get our own history correct with who was prez in WWII and talking about TV when there was none. She wasn't running on Bush's "doctrine" so why this stupid question. And she didn't say she saw Russia from her window - Tina Fey did on SNL. And of course the gullible public embraces SNL as the arbiter of truth.

No doubt about it. Democrats like Ugly Mofos... Reid, Pelosi, Kucinich, Janet Reno, Hilrod, Helen Thomas, Madeline notsobright, - or otherwise deranged, cry babies, criminals or any combination thereof.

Being commercially attractive and having common sense and talent makes them wanna puke. There are a myriad of reasons for this.

[Lenin was married to] Nadezhda Krupskaya, but he was fooling around with Inessa Armand

In most of the pictures I've seen, Nadezhda looked like one of the Monty Python guys in drag -- who can blame Lenin for being restless?

Scientific "proof" Palin is attractive:
Palin a 9.5, scientifically speaking

Too sexy for public office? Yeah, I get that all the time.
But seriously, the popular press just has to objectify and harrass Sarah Palin. They judge everyone- including the pet Obama family- by some shallow standard. Are they truly terrified that Governor Palin might just get into office once everyone tires of "the Chosen One"?
I hope she rocks her knee-high boots come next election and kicks some @$$. I'm tired of this nonsense!

re: #304 formercorpsman

Well, to be fair, I did see Killgore's reference to Dobson as Gibson, and fashioned my response as such.

I have a little question for you.

Prior to the 2006 mid-term elections, who was the Republican Congressman involved in the Page scandal?

Don't cheat, and look it up. If you don't know, fine.

First off -- you didn't ask me but -- Foley, right? I didn't look it up. ;D

One big problem with Palin's performance in interviews, IMO, is that she was learning about issues she's never had to deal with (and frankly, I would love to have seen 0's face if anyone asked him to expound on any issues a governor has to deal with), she was also being directed how to frame her answers. I blame her poor performance and bad interview schedule on the McCain team at least as much as I blame it on her "unreadiness". They tried to make her into something she isn't. Why? I don't know. Talk to her about the issues and then let her talk about them in her own way instead of giving her a bunch of boundaries and parameters. Remember how everyone said "let Sarah be Sarah"? Those interviews that made her look ditzy were very closely controlled by McCain's lousy team. And the scheduling was beyond idiotic.

But I'm finding that the "moderates" aren't really the least bit moderate. Just like "liberals" tend to be the least liberal people you'll ever see. These so-called 'centrists' have demands that are completely unreasonable and push over the line even into bigotry. And they're very quick to point their fingers at others.

I'm still looking for any evidence whatsoever that Sarah Palin is a political 'religio-con' who's shown any interest in making Alaska into a theocratic state. But then, to many so-called conservatives/centrists/moderates the accusation is proof of the crime. Sounds like another group we know too well.

re: #75 Scorch

Speaking of firearms, ordered 500 rounds of 30-06 for 40 cents a round and 300 rounds of 22-250 for 80 cents a round. Ouch that small caliber hurt but love the muzzle velocity.

Time for a reloading press.

This article is a load of crap. Does anyone remember how McCain was drawing huge crowds before Palin arrived? I didn't think so - because no one cared about stupid McCain. I'd vote for Palin in a minute because she believes in the same things I do:

God
Guns
Strong Defense
American Oil
Less Taxes
Less Government
Less Abortion

The gay guys hate her more since she looks good in jeans.
The L's hate her since she looks good in jeans and she looks better than "gasp" Hilary, one of there own in the closet politicians.
Hilary her self would hate her, but her great husband, the pervert, had little taste in real attractive women.
Even real men are confused when the press keep reporting how women think he his sooo sexy. Where do they find such females? At a NOW meeting.
I know good looking women. (dated Miss Nebraska at the pageant in Atlantic City, just as an example) Not a one found him appealing.
Olbermin may think he is sexy, but who cares what that dumb-ass thinks. (It may be the Dumbo ears)
