A source said: “There is a wish to do these things as discreetly as possible in the first instance.”

President Obama, famed for his Yes We Can slogan, will fly with wife Michelle on Air Force One to Stansted, Essex.

The private talks will be held the next day at Buckingham Palace.

Mr Obama will then join the G20 leaders for a Downing Street dinner on the eve of the summit on April 2.

Last night it emerged he gave Gordon Brown 25 top US movies as a gift after talks in the US.

Mr Brown’s wife Sarah gave Mr Obama’s two daughters Topshop outfits. And the First Lady gave Mr Brown’s two boys toy helicopters.

Okay as a curator let me say that it was NOT Obama's place to return the bust. IMO it is the property of the White House archives and artifacts. Or he could have sent it to the Bush II Presidential Library when it opens. I am not certain when we got the bust was this while Bush was POTUS or before. Don't they have people at the White House who know stuff like that professionally?

It should have been handled by the curator. I am pretty sure they have one. I am positive. Someone a conservator or such person should handle that...White House Historian.

Yeah, that was silly. Arrugala joke? OK. I don't see Michelle OR Barack Obama eating any of the named foods. Maybe Velveeta. Velveeta has some serious uses as a cheese-like substance.

Arugula would work. Obama will never live down the arugula. I imagine them eating sort of pretentious chichi yuppie food that the kids won't eat. Definately NOT Spaghetti-O's.

Then there was that thing during the campaign where they were filmed making tuna sandwiches for the kids, and Michelle Malkin got sort of loopy because she didn't know what gherkins were. That's about all I know about Obama eating habits.

Well he had a tendency to do that at his home also. And he spent weeks at a time with FDR during the War. He felt right at home in the White House. He was half American after all. And the Roosevelt's liked him.

Okay thanks for the link.
It sounds like a permanent loan.
In museums we often receive permanent loans when we recieve a gift from another collection but for whatever reason the collection's deed of gift says that no item shall ever be deaccessioned. Clearly this is supported by teh bust being moved down the street rather than back to the UK.

If this is the case, Obama is uncouth.

That's actually rather cool. I've always admired Churchill in the fact he was direct and no nonsense. To see how at home he was here, speaks volumes as to what America was like during that time period.

(Though, I still like the entertaining random thought of him just streaking through a press conference.)

As far as those things go? I would think that Obama's staff should have notified the curator and take it from there. But his staff sounds like Romper Room so who knows what is going on. He could have simply moved it to another room if he found it distasteful.

I find this sort of thing in my profession cringeworthy.

There was a splendid Epstein bust of Winston Churchill that had a place of honor in the Oval Office, a gift to the people of the United States from the people of Great Britain. It was replaced by a bust of Lincoln, and unceremoniously returned to Great Britain.

OK, fact check from the British press:

GW was a Churchill fan
The bust was loaned to GW
GW ia back in Texas
BHO returned the loaned gift
BHO has a Lincoln bust in it's place

Meryl is not a clown. She's a founding mother of the neo-con blogosphere. Admittedly she was more influential in 2002 than she is now, but that's the fault of a feckless American public and not a fault in her site.

I don't think it has sunk in yet with black professionals that BHO might be the problem, not the solution. But it has sunk in that we're in a "great depression". I first heard that phrase last month from a black project manager at a chemical site; they're scaling back orders heavily.
