Moon to Turn Japanese?

Science • Views: 3,267

Japan. Robots. The moon. Need I say more?

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is considering putting a robot on the moon by 2020 and an astronaut by 2030, a report from a government office showed on Friday, amid fears that the country will be left behind in Asia’s space race.

The plans follow China’s first space walk and India’s launch of their first unmanned moon mission last year. Beijing officials have said that China is looking to eventually put astronauts on the moon, though the government has not revealed any schedule. …

A space development panel also discussed on Friday the possibility of Japan eventually starting its own manned space program, a government official said.

“Some experts are concerned that unless there is an independent program, then Japan may be left behind in terms of space development,” said an official from the Strategic Headquarters for Space Policy (SHSP), under the Cabinet Office. “If large scale space development projects, such as moon probes or space solar power system, are conducted, not only robots but also people will have to be there. The technology of manned space programs will certainly become the foundation in such cases,” he said.

Seriously, or as seriously as I get on a Friday afternoon (West Coast), I've determined that I never want to live in a big city again, because when the superheroes battle the evil villain mega-robots/aliens/bugs, they always wipe out the cities. You never see the suburbs getting chewed up, with asphalt flying, and buildings being crumpled like a dixie cup when some invincible dude gets thrown straight into it. Just wouldn't work with a strip mall.

Gotta think carefully about the future.

Russia has received "very positive signals" from the new US Administration but wants a missile shield plan scrapped or reworked to eliminate Moscow's concerns, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's spokesman said Friday.

Dmitry Peskov suggested Russia sees the new American Administration's moves on missile defense as a crucial test of its stated intention to revamp ties. (AP)

Kepler To Launch Tonight!

NASA is set to launch a revolutionary new space telescope on Friday that will seek out other Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy. Scientists hope Kepler will find planets potentially hospitable to life.

Set to launch on March 6 at 0348 GMT (10:48pm), the Kepler telescope will mark the agency’s first mission to seek out life-sustaining planets. Kepler will launch via a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The Delta II rocket will use nine solid-fueled booster rockets and three stages to lift Kepler to its proper vantage point.

"Kepler is a critical component in NASA's broader efforts to ultimately find and study planets where Earth-like conditions may be present," Jon Morse, astrophysics division director at the US space agency's Washington headquarters, told a press conference last month.

Dig around...

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND?
Christians in the West must ask themselves questions about
the influence of Christian Zionism on US public opinion. It
grieves the member communions of the National Council of
the Churches of Christ in the USA
to note that many
Christians visiting the land of Jesus’ birth, death, and
resurrection are not even aware of the existence of Arab
Christians, and do not have opportunities to interact with
local Christian communities. One step toward addressing this
concern is for Christians in the West to become better aware
of Christian Zionism and its effects, including the history,
theology, and forms of biblical interpretation underlying this
ideology. Please take the time to learn what this movement
is all about, get involved, and continue to “pray for the
peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6).

HYPNOTIST AT THE SENIOR CENTER
It was entertainment night at the Lufkin, Texas Senior Center and over 300 seniors came to see the show.

Claude the hypnotist exclaimed: 'I'm here to put you into a trance; I intend to hypnotize each and every Member of the audience.

The excitement was almost electric as Claude withdrew a beautiful antique pocket watch from his coat. 'I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It's a very special watch. It's been in my family for six generations.’

He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting, 'Watch the watch, watch the watch, and watch the watch...'

The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface.

Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until, suddenly, it slipped from the Hypnotist's' fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into a hundred pieces.

'SHIT!' said the Hypnotist.

It took three days to clean up the Senior Center.

NASA: Wednesday night shuttle launch is official

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – It's official: NASA has finally settled on a Wednesday night launch for space shuttle Discovery.

The flight to the international space station was originally set for mid-February, but was delayed four times because of concern over critical shuttle valves. On Friday, senior NASA managers meeting at Kennedy Space Center put the valve issue to rest for Discovery and cleared the shuttle for flight.

Seven astronauts will ride Discovery into orbit, taking with them one final set of solar wings for the space station.

Nice story

Down came the hands. No one needed to be told who that man was, or why he was there. Everyone behind paused to wait patiently and respectfully, and everyone within reach helped me pick that old, frail, brave man up to look on the nuts and bolts of that totem of his distant life. And they thanked him, and they asked him questions, and marveled at him. A Brigadier General and a sailor and a J.A.G. and Vietnam vets by the handful pressed his hand for the piquant residue of that life that might be on it.

I'm crying.......

Freedom in expression, i think it same with any some terorrist guy who bombing around. i don't agree with them, they false and get prohibited by many muslim teacher cause they translate verse in Qur'an especially about jihad wrong, without knowledge and stupidity. But i'm agree if they bombing your place or everyone who draw that picture.

--------

From: Najat F. (Morocco)
Subject: Gulp down your steaming shit; it'll turn on you!

The depictions I have for you will better serve to depict your partial scatological ignorance of a great religion that has and is and will ever be spreading whether despicable narrow-minded biased and ill-informed blokes of your kind like it or not. Prophet Mohammed PBUH had you eyes that really see and ears that really hear and a mind that seeks the truth and probes the scientific facts embeded in the Koran, the thousands examples of humility, tolerance, peace and love and respect of the environment and the animals, all mentioned in Mohammed PBUH sayings, you would impartially get to understand how this illiterate man toppled the pagan despots of his time by simply rallying a bench of "bedwin" tribes around ISLAM, that is one God, one man and woman, one heart and one destiny. Here's just one reference, among thousands, for any sensible reasonable mind to read and know about Mohammed far from the excrement you tell and show: UNFOLDING ISLAM. Suffice it to say that this - but just 1 - book has been reprinted many times. So, please yourself in the worthless muck you wallow in, but remember and bear witness that you all SHALL RISE to answer for all your offences if you do not repent; just then we'll all see who would have the last laugh. Do your best then and keep up your extrata; it affects us nothing. Truth will prevail.

Have you read Orhap Armuk's "My Name is Red" ? The novel contains a facinating discussion of painting and portraiture in Islam. The topic is not so clear cut as your scatalogical pen-pals assume.

There are a lot of artists from Iran that have been presenting their work in London that suffer anonymity because if they were found out, they would be prosecuted in Iran for God-knows-what. The point is .. despite the show of force, there are people there that just want to get on with life.

Why would anyone want to go to the moon again? It's not made of green cheese like previously believed.

Let's say you wanted to build satellite solar power systems. You'd need a certain amount of raw materials to work with, and it would be prohibitively expensive to bring them all up from earth. An electonic rail gun, aka mass driver, could launch stuff from the moon. Since there's no atmosphere, you can just accelerate the thing laterally up to some sort of orbital velocity and there you have your raw materials.

To build this mass driver on the moon you'll need both humans and robots working there.

Why satellite solar power stations? No weather, 7/24 sunlight, microwave tight beam it down to a receiving station on earth, anywhere you like. No need of long transmission lines.

Maybe it can be done, and maybe it can't. Japan doesn't have Arizona to play with if it wants a lot of solar power. But nobody owns space. They seem to think it's worth looking into.

about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

ABBOTT : Wallpaper.

COSTELLO : Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT : Software for Windows?

COSTELLO : No. On the computer! I need something I can use to
write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT : Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT : I just did.

COSTELLO : You just did what?

ABBOTT : One copy.

COSTELLO : Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT : Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO : They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT : Why not? THEY OWN IT!

re: #158 EmmmieG

A serious post--my last one was pretty silly. Intentionally. Long week.

My grandfather , who died when I was a teenager, was also on the ground, in the Pacific Theater, in WWII. He had some experiences there that left him with problems with the Japanese. I found out about this years later, as an adult.

On my LDS mission, I had several companions who were Japanese. We got along great. After I found out about my grandfather's experiences, and his feelings, I was grateful to him for not feeling the need to pass those on, to perpetuate some need for tribal hatred, like some cultures do.

The WWII-era Japanese military culture was so extremely brutal, it's no wonder people who served in the PT came back with feelings like your grandfather did.

My dad was sort of an exception to this. He was on Iwo Jima, and he came home with tremendous respect for the Japanese. In fact, I didn't really learn about Japanese atrocities in WWII until the 1990s, when I started to study things that happened on Iwo and in the PT. He never said a word about it, either. I've been trying to understand why he felt this way (he passed away in 1996, so I cannot ask him), and all I can come up with is that he was a corpsman and I don't think he saw anything especially unusual in the course of performing his duties; he had friends and a cousin killed there, but it was from mortar and machine gun fire, not anything torturous as the Japanese were known for.

Amazing how the culture and its image has been transformed. And thank goodness.

Could we put Godzilla on Mars, and the robot, too, and let them fight it out? Pay-per-view would be awesome.

It's elementary. Consider how many split-level ranchers you have to scrape up to get the same protein content as a modest skyscraper, or even subway car... plus, the subway cars are about as easy to use as a box of Tic-Tacs. Just open one end and shake!

A classic rock tune from Sopwith Camel's album "THE MIRACULOUS HUMP RETURNS FROM THE MOON"

MONKEYS ON THE MOON

(Kraemer, MacNeil)

The archangel's sleeping.
The devil is weeping.
The heavenly host
is white as a ghost.

The old man himself is
mad as a loon
'cause all his kids are
singing a tune.
Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!

Monkeys on the moon.
Monkeys on the moon.
See how they bounce from
dune to dune
Came a long way in a gold
cocoon.
All the way from a green
balloon.
Just to plant flags for the big
baboon.
Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!

Saturn is blinking.
Jupiter's winking.
And old Sol's thinking.
His system is sinking.
But who's to say if it's
bad or a boon.
When all the kids are singing
a tune.
Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!

Used to be so peaceful in space.
Now there's hot-rods all over the place.
And old Lady Moon, in her silvery grace
now has these words tattooed
on her face.
Better get ready! It's coming soon!
Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!

Long time from now
in a place very far.
In the court of a castle
on a star.
A mad jester tunes
his fiery guitar.
And with a grin he says
to the Czar:
I'm gonna sing you a
ancient tune.
"Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!"

Monkeys on the moon.
Monkeys on the moon.
See how they bounce from
dune to dune.
Came a long way in a gold
cocoon.
All the way from a green
balloon.
Just to plant flags for the big
baboon.
Look out pa!
There's monkeys on the moon!

re: #248 Iron Fist

Fist, the Japanese bought Hiroshima and Nagasaki with alot more than just those two. After the Doolittle Raid, when the Japanese got wind of the Chinese helping in the effort, something to the effect of 250,000 Chinese were slaughtered because of this. And don't forget the rape of Nanking, where Japanese troops used Chinese babies for bayonet practice. The nation of Japan is still deep in debt for the atrocities that they inflicted on the areas that they occupied. But they refuse to own up to it. Bastards.

We saved millions of lives, both Japanese and Allied, by dropping the bombs. Many of us alive today would not be here otherwise, since our fathers would have died in the taking of Japan. Thank G*d for the Bomb, indeed. (You are an ignorant fool if you think otherwise. Think about it, o foolish one, maybe YOU wouldn't be here if it wasn't for those two bombs. Your father would have died in the invasion and YOU wouldn't be here.)

I have been in the bomb bays of both the Enola Gay (when it was being restored in Suitland MD before going to the Smithsonian) and Bock's Car at Wright-Patterson AFB; while both were just a bit creepy, it was ultimately being in a hallowed space, since out of the death that was dealt from there, much life was saved. On both sides. That seems to be forgotten by many.

My next door neighbors' father is well up into his 80's. He is a Marine that served in the Pacific, wielding a flamethrower. (Flamethrowers were always accompanied by at least two riflemen, since the Japanese knew that these guys were walking Death. Plus, I have to think that there was a certain humanitarian aspect to having someone that could put a flamethrower out of his agony if his tank was hit by a round...shudder). My neighbor tells me that his Dad told him that the Marines never had the opportunity to liberate a village or a town after the Japanese pulled out of it, since in every case, the Japanese massacred every living soul they could find when they retreated. Scorched earth, indeed. It has troubled this poor man to this day that they were never able to liberate anyone, like was done in the ETO. (Fortunately, this same neighbor is a priest and has done a lot to salve his father's anguish over this and what he had to do in the war.) I know this gentleman has not long to go and I hope that I might be able to be his pallbearer when he goes to his final peace.

"Most all the money, they said is spent on salaries for engineers and other NASA employees here on Earth."
Ummm....OK.....
Was in a room and a question was asked of a person that I know who is a PHD in Nuclear Physics. The question ran like this...
"Ok so you're a nuclear physicts right?"
"Yes that is right."
"So why aren't you working for NASA?"
The person asked looked startled and burst out laughing.
"So exactly why aren't you working for NASA?"
"I don't work for NASA because their pay is shite."

I thought the Japanese always traveled in big groups.

Only when they go to the Red Light districts like the one that used to be in Amerstdam.

ALL THESE WORLDS
ARE YOURS EXCEPT
EUROPA

I barely remember the monolith being a self copying machine made up by all wisdom and minds of a whole civilization dated eons ago. It also resembles God by this excerpt which recalls me another one:

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it".

Till one of the robots who's job it is, is to watch the power beams back to earth screws up and it roast a bunch of stuff......
--Asimov, I, Robot.

Asimov wrote two stories covering this idea.
The first (which you cite) actually takes place on Earth, where a technician inadvertently orders a robot to construct a machine to transmit energy.
After a small argument the robot complies, the top of a mountain is sheared off, and after ordering the robot to forget everything, the tech skedaddles, leaving behind a useless robot who got the energy from 2 flashlight batteries.
In the other story, IA's robot repairmen confront a robot whose God-given mission it is to aim a particle beam to a certain location.

P.S. Robots will become household appliances when the improve the Asimo to version 5.
