Penn and Teller: ESP

This is from Penn and Teller’s first season of Bullsh-t! on Showtime, one of their best shows; a highly skeptical (to put it mildly) look at the phenomena of extra sensory perception. (Language warning!)

James Randi once noted that anyone who actually believed in telekinesis would seal a laser pointer and a lightweight Mylar mirror in a mason jar, then ask prospective telekinetics to jiggle the mirror from across the room. Any actual telekinesis would cause the laser dot to jump wildly.

Instead, "researchers" roll millions of dice. This would seem quite illogical-even if you had a telekinetic "finger", how could you see how dice were going to land fast enough to give them a "poke"?- until you start considering it from a researcher employment perspective. Millions of dice allow patterns to form by random chance, allowing millions of pages of otherwise totally worthless papers to be written and accepted by parapsychology departments. The only purpose of the experiment is to generate random noise and hide the lack of results.

I often feel similarly about legislatures declaring National Pickle Week or somesuch.

28 zombie  Sun, Mar 8, 2009 1:29:27pm

To this day I am filled with regret that I blew off Penn & Teller when they requested to use my stuff for their show.

Years ago, I was contacted by a television producer who wanted to use various zombietime photos and videos for an upcoming new show to be called "Bullshit!" They seemed sincere, but the name of the show just seemed not possible to me: No way could a show with a title like that be on TV, I thought to myself. (I was completely ignorant of cable TV and its standards at that time; I've still never seen cable, but I've since learned that swearing is no longer verboten [?!?!?].)

Anyway, I convinced myself that the "producer" was just trying to pull some kind of hoax on me, and that there never will be a show called "Bullshit!", so I stopped communicating with that person. Just cold, cut them off.

A year later, I heard that the show was indeed real, and it was forehead-slap time.

For all I know, they used my material anyway (this was a long time ago, before I wised up and started charging the MSM for my stuff), because I think I wrote at one point, before I became convinced it was fake, "Why are you asking me? Just take whatever you want and use it."

I rarely regret anything, but this is one of them.

Seeing these guys do this show, I'm reminded of Harry Houdini, another stage magician and another national skeptic of paranormal phenomena. I think that 10 Million is low too. What we do know is that the majority have no employer sponsered healt coverage.
They heavily utilize the ER & that is almost always comped & passed on.
With coverage there will be an a crush of elective medical delivery.
That cost will contribute to rationing for the general population.

Yeah. Same idea, different way to put it.

The subconcious is like the computer controlling a missile or torpedo. It will crunch data until it finds the target which you've programmed into it, and then burps the answer up into the conscious.

Running around screaming and shouting, TRYING to find something, tends to override, or block out, the subconscious process.

Folks, if you are really interested in learning how the professionals do ESP visit your local magic store and buy some books on an old carnival routine called "Cold Reading." If you don't want to spend the money watch instead "The Wizard of OZ" for an amusing take on the subject. It occurs just before Dorothy hits her head and is whisked off to OZ. The side-show professor gives her a "Cold Reading." And really that's all there is to it. I once saw "Psychic George" do his show in person and even after I explained to people how he did it, they didn't believe me. They want to believe.

It's funny how these people remembering their past lives almost always come from a very well known period in history, and were almost always important figures or somehow related to them. In fact, I wonder if any hypnotherapists would ever admit to having multiple clients who claimed the same past life, or what proportion of their clients claimed to have had statistically probable but decidedly unglamorous roles such as starving peasant.

if the Prez is tired, he should lighten his workload. instead of trying to reinvent the greatest society this planet has ever known, focus on two things:

1. Keep us and our friends safe
2. Work on real solutions to the economy.

the following things making him tired can wait:

1. "Fixing" healthcare
2. Going Green
3. Giving hundreds of millions to islamo-nazis
4. Making union members knuckle under to their "shop stewards."
5. Add your own "waste of time" item here
6.

Actually, and imho only...he should just stop doing anything.

Tired of anti-science Republicans? How about an anti-science Democrat for a change?
Rep. Conyers wants science to be secret… or you will pay

Astronomers, for example, almost always post their papers on Astro-ph, a place where journal-accepted papers can be accessed before they are published.

John Conyers (D-MI) apparently has a problem with this. He is pushing a bill through Congress that will literally ban the open access of these papers, forcing scientists to only publish in journals. This may not sound like a big deal, but journals are very expensive. They can cost a fortune: The Astrophysical Journal costs over $2000/year, and they charge scientists to publish in them! So this bill would force scientists to spend money to publish, and force you to spend money to read them.

Why would Conyers do this? Interestingly, if you look at the bill sponsors, you find that they received twice as much money on average in donations from journal publishers than Congresscritters who don’t sponsor the bill — though to be fair, the total amount is not large. Still, Conyers got 4 times as much.

Interesting.

Ironically, this bill is called The Fair Copyright in Research Works Act, which is much like the Clean Air Clear Skies Act or the Patriot Act, in that it does exactly the opposite of what its name says. This bill is not fair, it puts a burden on scientists and keeps research from being publicly accessible as it should be. I myself rely on things like Astro-ph to do my reporting here; it could become illegal to post papers there for federally-sponsored scientists if this bill is passed.

Especially if you've got a bowie knife too, for close quarters.

That was, of course, merely a theoretical observation, with no pertinance to the man in the video which Killgore posted.

totally OT

Reine, I made your crabmeat au gratin (from the cookbook) used
crawfish instead (crabmeat was 16.00 lb crawfish was 6.00 lb) it
is AWESOME. I have been trying to make this from various recipes (Mike Andersons included) and could never get a decent tasting dish. Yours
is the best and very easy.
Thanks!

20 million taxpayer dollars to study "remote viewing." Remote viewing, ESP, telepathy, call it what you like but it is indeed bullshit as Penn and Teller clearly point out. Even the "practitioners" look like they have "bullshit" written across their foreheads.

One of the most embarrasing moments in the history of NASA was the revelation after Apollo 14 returned to Earth was that astronaut Edgar Mitchell conducted ESP experiments. I wouldn't be surprised if the moon hoax fruitcakes believe in ESP.

ESP, and the rest of the junk belong in the junk heap of humanity along with intelligent design amongst others. Cripes, looking at the dog psychic BS now. Where do they find these people?

Other non-Jewish amulets have been found in Carnuntum. One gold- and three silver-plated amulets with magical texts were found in a stone sarcophagus unearthed west of the camp of the Roman legion, including one beseeching Artemis to intervene against the migraine demon, Antaura. Amulets have also been found in Vindobona and the Hungarian part of Pannonia. What is different about the Halbturn gold amulet is its Jewish inscription. It uses the confession to the center of Jewish faith and not magic formulae.

When confronted about the missing $158,000,000 [that's 158 million dollars], he claimed that Satan had gotten into his ministry's computers to make the money lost. When asked if he could prove Satan stole the money, he replied, "Can you prove he didn't?"

Your father fought a noble battle. Here's a random snippet of that crap:

It reflects the ancient belief that reproduction is governed by a sort of mystical "force" that resides in the male and is conveyed in his "seed," while the female merely serves as a vessel or medium for converting the "seed" into a new individual. Sad to say, the same superstition has even been promoted to educators in the guise of "science." This happened about nine years ago, when the municipal school district of Portland, Oregon, became entangled in a scam.

It's been a lot of years but when I was a student it was called a HAPLOID and both parents brought one to the party.

I dunno about esp but I know this.

My wife has an uncanny knack of knowing when someone is about to ring or she may have a thought about someone whom she hasnt seen for years and then turn a corner in the street and there they are. Anyway, she had this thought, a need to ring her mum one Friday afternoon/evening around 5.30pm, something she would never do. Her mum lives in a city about 70km away. She phoned and it rang and rang until a gasping voice answered. My wife quickly reasoned that her mum was suffering an asthma arrest. I was there and I quickly hung up the phone and rang emergency (here in NZ it is 111) and we were able to get an ambulance to her. That was one "weird moment". Is it esp? Dunno, but without that "feeling" her mum would have died on the floor.

re: #382 buzzsawmonkey

Here's some of what's in there:

Psychoenergetics

The ancient Egyptians were known the world over as the masters of "magic" (psi): precognition, psychokinesis, remote viewing and other underdeveloped human capabilities.31 Unfortunately, that legacy has been cloaked in controversy, marred with misunderstanding, and veiled in mystery. The problem begins with the multitude of meanings of the word "magic," many of which are often contradictory. Therefore, before discussing this subject, we first must know the extremely significant distinction between (non-science) "magic" and (science) psychoenergetics.

Psychoenergetics (also known in the scientific community as parapsychology and psychotronics) is the multidisciplinary study of the interface and interaction of human consciousness with energy and matter. Magic is the conscious attempt of an individual to `imitate' through ordinary sensorimotor means the operation of psychoenergetic (psi) phenomena. Thus, genuine psi phenomena such as precog-nition, psychokinesis, and remote viewing, in the distant past as well as the present, has always been closely associated with "magic," and the attempt to separate the two has only been a fairly recent activity. Psi, as a true scientific discipline, is being seriously investigated at prestigious universities all over the world (e.g., Princeton and Duke). We are concerned here only with psi in Egypt, not "magic."

Essentially this is calling parapsychology a science.

you ask me if i believe in ghosts
of course i do not believe in them
if you had known as many of them as i have you
would not believe in them either

CLASSIC! Yes!
Damn, I'm glad I didn't have anything in my mouth when I scrolled down to your comment!

Thanks- I think. Now I'm depressed.

543 arcatan  Sun, Mar 8, 2009 6:42:49pm

I just feel sorry for all the people who live in the "prove it" world. There's more to human potential, and the universe of consciousness than we can guess and sciences pitiful efforts to measure material phenomena have hardly scratched the surface.

Carl Jung, the eminent Swiss psychologist, suspected there was more than meets the eye and wrote a little book entitled "Synchronicity: An acausal connecting principle" that suggests a profound relationship between events that exceed known causality.

When I was younger and more narcissistic I was incapable of seeing beyond the comfort zone of scientifically explainable cause and effect. I have come to realize that such attitudes are the very same in religious doctrine - offering security in this ostensible chaotic universe by providing an explanation for cause and effect.

And I'm not persuaded by those who claim that science is rational, I have little doubt that in another millennium or so people will look back at our scientific beliefs and see them as irrational. Yet, that is something I just can't prove.

re: #545 Basho

Do you think that taking my idea to the ridiculous extreme and then bashing it proves insight? It's likely that, to you, science is indeed no different than religion. And hey, it's even got a proven track record of successful efforts, but as the saying goes "even a blind squirrel can occasionally find a nut".

Not that all science is wrong, but it appears that most any form of speculative science is wrong, when science attempts to extrapolate from data it is notoriously erroneous. For example, in my life I've experience numerous impending-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it scenarios advanced by science, with a real prize winner in global warming.

But the flaws of science aren't so important as to know that there is more to reality than measurable material data.

Another important, and tragic, example is how science is forcing contrived identities on people. Most people don't see themselves as black, or white, or rich or poor, or male or female, but by certain important personal characteristics. Yet because science is incapable of measuring the real human qualities and it's so convenient to measure the grossest manifestations of our individuality, we have created a society that fails to recognize the real diversity among people and instead focuses on easily measurable aspects.

I could go on, but if you're a sciencist (you have faith in Science) it really doesn't matter. You put your faith in science because it gives you the tools to feel master enough in your world and there is no way you're going to easily choose to abandon that sense.

Indeed for most people, science is no more than a religion. Few people can understand, or explain most of the phenomena that science tells us is true - we have to take it on faith. I put my key in the ignition and the car starts ... if it doesn't I take it to a "priest" to perform his rituals and restore my vehicle for which I pay my gratitude. If the system works, why question it?

555 Basho  Sun, Mar 8, 2009 8:14:40pm

re: #554 arcatan

Yeah... landing a probe on a specified area on a Martian surface is exactly like a blind squirrel finding a nut.

And no... science doesn't make me feel like a master in the world. That's the realm of magic. I will never be able to visit another star system because it is simply unfeasible. It drives me crazy but it's life and I have to deal with it.

If I just took you're idea to an extreme and then bashed it then my bad. I really don't care though since I'm watching the Dawkin's video Jimmah linked and I don't feel like responding further to your ridiculous assertions.

Look- as someone who does have some belief in the supernatural (God, souls, angels, etc.) as well as accepts scientific knowledge let me say that science is the only natural explanation for natural phenomenon.

In other words, it is science that is the only tool with which to explain reality.

Err... it's the only way to explain reality. The story of Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders to keep it from falling into the abyss is a great story, but Kepler's laws and Newtonian mechanics do a far better and accurate job explaining how the Earth stays in orbit.

In the ESP episode, there was some idiot thinking she went back in time to the Napoleon era, but as Penn pointed out humorously she was pretty much historically inaccurate.

By the way, the whole Newspeak method of changing the meaning of words so that science is a religious faith while belief in the supernational is some rational position to hold isn't going to work around here.

And as an aside, don't confuse the facts of global warming with the policy people come up with to deal with it.

A couple of Arcatans statements:

Not that all science is wrong, but it appears that most any form of speculative science is wrong, when science attempts to extrapolate from data it is notoriously erroneous.

This is the same person who said, a few posts earlier:

Carl Jung, the eminent Swiss psychologist, suspected there was more than meets the eye and wrote a little book entitled "Synchronicity: An acausal connecting principle" that suggests a profound relationship between events that exceed known causality.

Too funny.

Many creationists and IDiots regard Richard Dawkins as a dunce.
I wish I were as stupid as Richard Dawkins.
