From Zooborns:

Just today (Australia time) the Taronga Zoo unveiled their newest baby wombat. Baby Matari will be hand-reared at the zoo. In the wild, wombat moms are professional diggers and rarely take maternity leave. For this reason they have backwards facing pouches (unlike most other marsupials) to protect their young from flying dirt and rocks.

I did not know wombats had backwards pouches. The stuff you learn at this blog.

At least it looks like Obama is going to give me the time to decide. He's so over his head that he can't even tread water. If he were to try to go for gun control now, the Blue Dog Democrats might just ask for his resignation.

The wombat's pouch evolved into it's current "upside-down" position by tiny increments of an angle over millions of years due to slight advantages in natural selection. During this time, it's likely that the wombat digging behavior went sideways to keep dirt out of its pouch. Of course, there's the question of whether the evolution took a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Perhaps one could speculate on the coriolis effect . . . nevertheless, it is likely that the next evolutionary step is for its nose to follow for the same reason.

Yes, it's very cute.

I thought the Republicans were suppose to be the elitist.

Pelosi Made Repeated Requests for Military Aircraft, Documents Show

In one e-mail, aide Kay King complained to the military that they had not made available any aircraft the House speaker wanted for Memorial Day recess.

"It is my understanding there are NO G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable ... The Speaker will want to know where the planes are," King wrote.

In another, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King wrote: "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset Speaker."

These assholes actually think they're entitled to whatever they want.
The spending needs to stop on both sides of the aisle.

Uh Oh.

At least 10 dead in two-town Alabama shooting spree

At least 10 people were killed Tuesday in a shooting spree that spanned two small southern Alabama towns, state officials confirmed. The gunman, who turned the gun on himself, and the wife and child of a sheriff's deputy were among those killed.

The shooting started in a neighborhood in Samson, a town of about 3,000 about 15 miles north of the Florida border, just after 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) and ended 12 miles away at a manufacturing plant in Geneva, said Alabama state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, who represents Geneva County.

What did Sir Gus O'Donnell, Britain's most senior civil servant, say about the US senior administration yesterday (today, but yesterday for the UK):

Downing Street is finding it "unbelievably difficult" to plan for next month's G20 summit in London because of problems tracking down senior figures in the US administration.

"There is nobody there. You cannot believe how difficult it is," the Cabinet Secretary told a civil service conference in Gateshead.

I don't know that I'd want to vote for Newt. Didn't say I wouldn't, mind you, just that I don't think I'd want to. He has much to recommend him, but he has much to not recommend him. I wasn't particularly impressed by how he and Dole (shudder) handled the House and Senate after they took the leadership of the respective bodies in the 1994 election.

The voters voted a Revolution. The Republicans never really delivered on that. Better than the Democrats, certainly, but after a while the diligent refrain of "We Suck Less!" wears thin. Especially toward the end there, when it was difficult to say exactly how they sucked less.

maybe he has aged and is more savvy...he is very smart and for that alone I'd try him....he has had years to rethink what he did wrong the first time

re: #97 Spar Kling

The wombat's pouch evolved into it's current "upside-down" position by tiny increments of an angle over millions of years due to slight advantages in natural selection. During this time, it's likely that the wombat digging behavior went sideways to keep dirt out of its pouch. Of course, there's the question of whether the evolution took a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Perhaps one could speculate on the coriolis effect . . . nevertheless, it is likely that the next evolutionary step is for its nose to follow for the same reason.

Yes, it's very cute.

-sk

Are you going to credit Geoffrey Simmons for that thought?

"The wombat has an upside-down pouch. Scientists presume, and it makes sense, that position prevents dirt from entering the pouch when the wombat is digging in the ground. Could there have been transitional species with pouches situated sideways, or did the first wombats have to scoop dirt out of their pouches every day?"

re: #160 Sharmuta

Here's a response to Geoffrey's thought:

"The author is using a technique to make evolution sound stupid by bringing up a wombat that would have a sideways pouch or that wombats would have to scoop dirt. Of course the change from right-side-up to upside-down could have simply been in one step. When a wombat came along with a mutation that led to an upside-down patch, it would have a strong advantage in being able to raise healthy young.

This characterization of the wombat is laughable, yet convenient for IDers. I suspect the example was brought up because it is going to be hard to find intermediate fossils of wombat pouch evolution due to the pouch being made of soft tissue. Since soft tissues don’t fossilize, it will be hard to trace its evolution."

'Wow', said a passer by, 'look at that wombat! It's just sitting there watching the screen!
At which the wombat's friend replied: 'You wouldn't think he'd be so fascinated, would you? ? Not after he read the book and knows how the story ends.'

We're going to see the "Assault Weapon" ban, and a magazine capacity limit in 1-2 years, tops.

Worthless "gun control" laws are like salted chips to Democrats ... they can't pass just one.

I doubt it. Harry Reid has made it pretty clear that such bills will not pass the Senate. There are too many Senators who cannot support such bills without severe political damage. Such bills may well be introduced, but they won't become laws.

A rifle and a shotgun are two long guns. Add a brace of pistols, and a couple of decent blades, and soon you are talking about being dressed all formal and shit.

I admit that, but I so rarely go in full formal dress any more. Times are so relaxed; I often take no more than a pair of Uzis in shoulder rigs, a Sykes-Fairborn, and two or three baby Glocks. Summer's coming.

How to feed a pill to a cat....
1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for glueing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink one beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whisky compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologise to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie the little bxxxxxxx's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for RSPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

How To Give A Dog A Pill
1. Wrap it in bacon.
2. Toss it in the air.

[Link: www.evolutionnews.org...]

Yes, this "keeping out dirt" idea is now the most popular scientific explanation, which is similar to the reason given for the evolution of the female hymen in humans, horses, hyenas, and a few other mammals (but paradoxically not chimpanzees though).

But on reflection, this speculation might not be correct after all. As someone pointed out previously, the direction of the wombat's pouch is facing in a more natural direction, where the embryos would come from. So, it's far more likely that all the other marupials' pouches are "upside-down," reversing themselves. After all the hopping that kangaroos do, they must have lost too many developing young, and the survival of the fittest did not leave enough of them.

One wonders whether their common ancestor didn't start with a sideways pouch with openings at both ends, to also act as a paw warmer. :-)

A young soldier was attending some college courses between assignments. He had also completed missions in Afghanistan

One of the courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He Looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, 'God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.'

The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am God. I'm still waiting.'

It got down to the last couple of minutes when the young soldier got out of his Chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The young man went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.

The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the soldier and asked, 'What the hell is the matter with! you? Why did you do that?'

Came the reply, 'God was too busy today protecting our soldiers who are protecting your right to talk stupid and act like an asshole. So, He sent me'

I'm not critical of 0bama's statements here- just surprised by them. He's upsetting the Teacher's Unions but it's long past time they had less of a say in education. What I mean by that is the unions in particular, not teachers. I have great respect for teachers, but not their political special interest groups that worry more about the adults than the kids.

Allow cat to close mouth and swallow..

Actually, you use your offhand thumb and forefinger to spread the jaw and your favored thumb and forefinger to place the pill at the back of the tongue, pushing it past the tongue with the forefinger in one swift motion.

/cat has no choice but to swallow it, it's an art form

Mom went from driving her Buick all over town and to the Bingo Hall every other day or so to laying in the hospital bed trying to get some peace and quiet and recovery. Little Johnny replies, ‘NONE – the rest of the birds flew away!’

Miss Rogers smiles and says, ‘The correct answer is five, Little Johnny, but I like the way you think.’

‘OK, Teacher,’ says Little Johnny, ‘Now I have a question for you: there are three women sitting eating ice cream cones. The first one is just taking little licks, the second one is carefully licking up and down and all about the sides of her ice cream cone, and the third one opens her mouth wide and takes the entire ice cream cone into her mouth. Which one of these women is married?’

‘Oooh! . . . er . . . uh . . . um . . .’ Miss Rogers replies nervously, ‘Why, I suppose it’s the one who opens her mouth and takes the entire ice cream cone in her mouth . . .’

‘Wrong, Teacher!’ Little Johnny replies, ‘It’s the woman wearing the wedding ring, but I like the way you think!’

The American nodded. "It's the same in the USA only we see stars, too!"

I just spent more than an hour trying to replace the turn signal flasher on a 1994 Chevrolet Beretta. This item, the most frequently replaced electrical component, is virtually buried under the left side of the dash. I took off the plastic cover under the steering column and then a metal cover, only to find yet another metal cover, this one has metal sides as well and the flasher is inside it. I never did get to the flasher, it is a 1.2 hour flat rate job since the third box has to be removed as well, along with the top of the dash. This means the better part of a hundred bucks to replace a $2.95 item.

The idiots who designed this disaster do not deserve a bailout, they deserve to be in prison. They have pillaged the land and deceived the American people for generations and now that it has finally caught up with them, our new Messiah decides to rescue them from the well-deserved ruin they brought on themselves. They are no better than thieves. And people wonder why I do not drive American marque cars myself. Screw them, willing victims, slaves, and thieves.

Please note that between the Stimulus Porkapalooza and this latest $410 billion dip at the debt trough, Obama toadies Olympia Snowe and Arlen Specter have personally cost American taxpayers, with interest on the debt, well over a trillion dollars!

/if the Republican party stood for anything resembling conservative economic values and fiscal restraint, this $410 billion porkfest could have easily been stopped dead in it's tracks

They are just democrats who live in Republican districts. A lot of Republicans will continue to vote for a veteran rep who brings home the pork. It's the fatal gene in the System--the one that can only be overridden by personal integrity. On the flipside, Bayh and Feingold are two democrats who voted nay.

The reality is they are partnering with the sinners - LEANING on the sinners - and using them, knowing full well that smokers will tend to continue to smoke, regardless.

They also know full well that smokers tend to be lower-income people, as well, so it ends up being primarily a tax on the poor.

Same goes for these ridiculous proposals for extra taxes on fast food sales and junk food.

I think it would take a long time before everyone would quit. It could happen maybe in 200 years or so. What they would do instead is keep increasing the tobacco tax so they can keep squeezing every little dollar out of smokers.

A very long time ago, I read a scholarly book about the history of addiction. What I remember is that from the beginning of recorded history, some people use vice and others work overtime to control it's use. At no time, has the attempt to control been successful. Humans are Humans.

I think I posted this once before:

The window tax was a glass tax which was a significant social, cultural, and architectural force in the kingdoms of England, Scotland and then Great Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries. Some houses from the period can be seen to have bricked-up window-spaces (ready to be glazed at a later date), as a result of the tax.

Enclosed is my 2009 Form 1040, together with payment. Please take note of the attached article from USA Today archives. In the article, you will note that the Pentagon paid $171.50 each for hammers and NASA paid $600.00 each for toilet seats.

Please find enclosed in this package four toilet seats (value $2,400.00) and six hammers (value $1,029.00). This is in payment for my total tax due of $3,429.00.

Out of a sense of patriotic duty, and to assist in the political purification of our government, I am also enclosing a 1.5 inch Phillips head screw, for which HUD duly recorded and approved a purchase value of $22.00, as my contribution to fulfill the Presidential Election Fund option on Form 1040.

It has been a pleasure to pay my taxes this year, and I look forward to paying them again next year in accordance with officially established government values.

Sincerely,

I've heard tell that you can get American cigarettes from Europe by mail order at a fraction of the cost.

According to my state, it is illegal to import them without paying the tax. Each pack has to have the revenue stamps on it to be legal. I checked into all that and started buying tobacco from an Ohio co. and rolling my own.

Well, the Ohio company just announced that - iirc - pipe tobacco tax has gone way up. SIGH.

Legally, if I went to Virginia and bought more than two packs, then came back to Maryland, I'd be breaking the law.

You can get cigs from Indian res. sellers with no state tax, but they are subject to the federal tax. My understanding, though, is that if they get cease and desist orders from a state, they would have to stop sending them to that state.

The states are a bunch of blood sucking leeches.

I'm not sure about alchohol. For some reason, it seems to fall thru the cracks on taxes and regulation in many ways. I think it's because it's use crosses all boundries, and those in power, can't do without it.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that is because most every state has a brewery, or distillery, or winery that local pols will line up to protect.

Now tobacco, that's regulated to a few southern states and even fewer states that have manufacturing plants. Besides, who do those cornpone racists think they are, anyway?

Did you know that federal cigarette taxes are paid by the manufacturers when the product is made, not when the product is sold?

.And God Created California!

In the Beginning

God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God. "Where have you been?"

God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look, Michael. Look what I've made."

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?"

"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put Life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance." "Balance?" Inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of earth. "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a land mass and said "What's that one?"

"Ah," said God. "That's California the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful beaches, deserts, streams, hills, and forests. The people from California are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, "What about balance, God? You said there would be balance!"

God replied wisely, "Wait until you see the idiots I put in Sacramento."

5 dollars a round. What a douche bag. It could very well have been Durbin considering his track record. He's now one of Obama's top men. Durnin... in the White House deciding the direction of our country.

I need a shot of whisky.

That was never going to pass, no matter who's in charge. I'm really more worried about what they might be able to sneak in by making it sound "reasonable."

There's a move to ban "armor piercing ammunition," defined as any round that will penetrate the type of vest most cops wear under their uniforms. Sounds reasonable to most people (including a lot of uninformed gun owners), until you understand that it would ban virtually all full-power center fire rifle ammo. Those vests are made to stop handgun rounds.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that is because most every state has a brewery, or distillery, or winery that local pols will line up to protect.

I think drugs should be legalized for adults, and taxed enough to cover the enforcement and rehab for anyone who wants it.
It would dry up money for criminal gangs and also make it easier for people to get off drugs. However, maybe we'd have to charge Hollywood celebrities extra.

If you fired that thing while it was pointed around the corner, what would the recoil do, tear the whole schmear out of your hands? You look at most any handgun, or long gun, and they are designed to transfer the recoil into some relatively massive part of the user's body, right?

NASA and the Navajo

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took the astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son came across the space crew walking among the rocks.

The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question.

His son translated for the NASA people: "What are these guys in the big suits doing?"

One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon.

When his son relayed this comment the Navajo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give
to the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts
said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder.

The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said.

The son listened to the recording and laughed uproariously. But he refused to translate. So the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They too laughed long and loudly but also refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, an official government translator was summoned. After he finally stopped laughing
the translator relayed the message:

"Watch out for these assholes. They have come to steal your land."

Started then out of laziness and simple go-along-to-get-along (you didn't have to smoke to work for RJR, but sitting in sales meetings without smoking was torture. And the smokes were free.) Smoked for about 15 years, then quit when I took early retirement.

Took me probably five years to be able to finally say, "Naw, I don't smoke." and really mean it.

But I do, of course. Smoke a cigar if the mood strikes, after a long day and with a drink of some sort. Doesn't seem to matter what brand. It isn't so much the taste as the ritual of it all.

The black market is already in existence and competitive. The government legalizing it would result in a handful of licensed, regulated growers being able to eliminate most of the underground growers. Modern kids and young adults wouldn't deal with the hassle of a source if they can get it risk-free from SuperAmerica. Most also wouldn't bother with growing it themselves.

Once you have it well regulated and controlled with a nice growing addicted user base, THEN jack up the taxes.

Well legalizing and taxing drugs is a fairly complex subject. Folks ARE gonna do drugs, no two ways about it. And if you legalize it, make the government the sole legal seller of it, some enterprising criminals will find a way to sell better quality drugs at lower prices (they don't gotta pay no stinking taxes!) and the net result is that folks keep using drugs - but some may "try" them when they otherwise might not because they are illegal and the criminal penalities can be very high.

re: #622 realwest

None of the hard core drugs would ever be legalized. Marijuana is about the most benign but it would probably face class action law suits due to the cancerous nature of the drug -- not unlike cigarets. Of course it would save a lot of money in cutting down law enforcement spending. Under Federal law marijuana is put on the same class as meth. That seems rather extreme and not based on scientific evidence.

627 esch  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 10:13:51pm

The problem with legalization is not the cost to the now-legal addicts. It is the cost to those around them, and to society in general. Yes, people will do stupid things and drugs are one of the most common, but you don't have an obligation to encourage them in their folly. And I have no moral obligation to pay for the clean up of their stupidity.

I can attest to this as the result of a couple of generations of drug abuse and failed marriages LARGELY ATTRIBUTABLE to the drugs.

Which is not to say that those that are a part of the number 2 problem (hard core drugs) should be legalized.

I saw the Galloway thread, and yes I had some very unkind thoughts for him - the kind of teenagery fantasies that boys get involving large blunt objects and satisfying thudding noises.

I saw the State Dept thread and think it is disturbing.

I saw that the enlightened Saudis are going to lash an old lady who wanted some bread. You know, I was brought up in a culture, where if you saw someone lay hands on an old lady, you were justified in completely "re-orienting" him. Meanwhile, the establishment left goes and talks about Israel and turns a blind eye, while the establishment right talks about oil money and turns a blind eye. Ahhh yes, our good friends the Saudis....

I was getting kind of glum. I mean enough with this... I really was not feeling like talking, or reasoning. I have a nice oak friend from Louisville who can talk for me.

Then I saw the wombat.

I wanted to thank Charles for that. I really think I know why he does it. Sometimes the blogosphere just seems too much. Feel better now.

the problem is the billions (with a b) that are spent on interdiction that would be lost to police agencies. Heck here in IN they run a helicopter search every summer for the crops follks put out in fence rows. To keep a chopper up all summer and an interdiction team on the ground to remove and sometimes catch folks, has got to cost money, plus the seizures that they get to keep? Hell it will never be legal under those conditions, they stand to loose to much...

I think drugs should be legalized for adults, and taxed enough to cover the enforcement and rehab for anyone who wants it.
It would dry up money for criminal gangs and also make it easier for people to get off drugs. However, maybe we'd have to charge Hollywood celebrities extra.

The problem is the victims. Not the drug users. But families and children. I do foster care and almost all the kids we've cared for are children of drug users. The need for many of the drugs over rides the responsibility for caring for the children.

Drugs are not a victimless past time.

I argee what we are doing isn't working. That somehow taking the profit away from criminal enterprises is a worthwhile goal.

But there are more than just the users at stake.

What's different in the relative scope of human history is that people once used whatever they could produce on their own--barley wine, hard cider (I've heard that the real legend of Johnny Appleseed is that he brought farmers the seeds that could give them the keys to the juice!), ganga, or whatever. Despite the harder lives they lived, people in those earlier times were much freer to choose how they wanted to live. Hell, many of them had much shorter life expectancy and they just did the best they could.

The medical wing of my family would agree with you. My brother, who is part of the medical wing did rotatins in the inner city. He has some very colorful stories.

Not to really poke my nose in the legalize drugs discussion, I'll make a distinction about what is the hard vs. soft based on how fast it kills you and how much it destroys your mind.

If you allow alchohol, I don't understand why pot is an issue. For the record, I don't partake and I drink very, very sparingly.

I will say though that I have never seen a stoned college kid pick a fight, or puke on someone, or wake up next to someone they regretted waking up next to.

The hard drugs though destroy people utterly. We can argue about individual freedoms as much as we like, but a hard drug addict is a danger to themselves and others. It is to the benefit of society to keep them illegal.

I know. I'm just saying that people now have access to so many drugs, be they natural or man-made, at relatively cheap prices. And many of them have the leisure to use them and still be classified as "functional." A Puritan or a Zen Buddhist would insist that the only way to live life fully and purely is without any kind of consciousness-altering substance. I'm not sure I would disagree with them, but the fact is the culture as a whole has ready access to these substances and fewer personal/moral objections to them. In fact, the largest cultural group that makes a firm stand abainst any of these substances is Islam, and yet they have way bigger problems. It's a tough question.

I hear you. It would be the same as alchohol. I'm not particularly pro-drug myself, however, from everything I've seen, it seems really odd to me to say that alchohol is somehow not a drug, that niccotine (which is more addictive than heroin according to more than one MD I've heard) is not a drug, but pot is.

I am not arguing it is good for anyone. I am saying it is no worse than drugs we already tolerate, and at least in this case, I would rather tax it, increase revenue, and spend limited law enforcement resources on the crack heads, the meth heads and the gangs involved.

I take no offense. I also offer none. But I've heard the 'what harm does it do?' countless times from people that have done me great harm over the years because of their addictions.

Dozens of varieties of pot, many kinds of hash, speed, coke, acid. Plenty more that I've blocked out over the years. They destroyed my dad's life, mostly destroyed my mom's. 'Sticking' to pot didn't do much. Combine that with my mom's parent's marriage also coming apart from drugs, and I'm surprised my closest uncle and I survived our childhoods.

Some drugs are 'worse' than others. They destroy your life more quickly. The end result is the same. Pot merely turns you into a drooling lifeless zombie. I've seen it. I GREW UP with it.

Uh, thank you Timbre, but the point I was making was that not everyone who's on prescription meds is simply inuring themselves to their enslavement.
I don't get "high" or God knows, lose sight of reality for one fucking minute and I suspect that there are a hell of a lot more people like me than his post suggested.

re: #669 razorbacker

The cat that lives in the house with us has some quirks.

He won't eat off the floor. If anything touches the floor, he ain't eating it. Wants his groceries from the bowl or no dice. Won't even pick up a kitty treat if it gets on the floor.

Won't eat people food, either. Won't even eat salmon or tuna. Wants his stuff poured from a bag, thank you. Dry food only, none of that icky wet stuff. He'll try a tiny bit of peanut butter, but if you laugh at him he gets all 'Screw you, Bucko, I don't have to sit here and be made sport of."

Talk about quirks! I once had a cat named Boots (all-dark-grey cat with white paws) that was the toughest thing around.

This cat would disappear in the neighborhood for hours at a time. Our house, it seemed, was just a place to sleep and get food.

One day, out of curiosity, I followed Boots on one of his adventures. I remember being astounded that dogs three times his size would run to the backyard when they saw him coming down the street! I saw him run into another dog that obviously didn't know who Boots was. Just one of Boots' hiss, and the dog hid behind his owner!

Several months after that, Boots came home one day missing a piece of his ear, and had actually a chunk taken out of his skull – you could see a bit of Boots' brain! When I let the cat in, he went over to his bowl, and was more worried about getting his food than about his injuries.

That weekend, we took him to the vet to get stitched up. I won't go into detail about the impossibility of trying to manage him in the car, or how difficult it was for the vet to give Boots a shot, so he would sleep and could get stitched up. Boots didn't seem to notice much difference afterwards, though.

About a year and a half after that, Boots went out on one of his adventures, and just never came home. I never knew if he finally picked the wrong fight, or maybe got hit by a car (who knows? maybe he found a cute girl cat and moved in there), but I like to think he finally found the peace that he needed in his life.

I'm with you.

Success! I finally got the flasher replaced on that accursed Chevrolet Beretta.
As usual when dealing with the products or plans of the stupid and evil, brute force turned out to be the best solution. I used a hacksaw and a Dremel tool to cut through the third metal cover and the box of which it is part. The flasher was right there. In the usual GM fashion it had to pried away from the plug with a screwdriver but the new one is finally in and working.

When my cat runs into the garage expecting it to be moist food in a can day, and I sprinkle some dry in his already full dry food, well, let's just say his look has me backing out of the garage slowly into the house. "Good cat, don't attack Daddy."

I had a cat that used to stalk anybody that was in the house or in the yard.
I was standing in my parents kitchen and the cat came from the living room on a dead run ran up my pants leg, stop at my waist, looked at me and then disappered back into the living room. He would stalk you if you left your bedroom door open when you went to bed.

Really? Even all the crack and bumps it makes? It really started when I was in my mid twenties and evolved into a different pain. The occasional pain in my 20s was actually worse and evolved into this which drives me crazy but isn't as bad as the accute pain during that time. More than likely it's from computer use.

Good old Boots.

We got the current cat because his former family didn't get him cut, so he wandered. Wandered into a live trap, and ended up at the pound.

Not much hope for an adult tomcat. They're not really the 'ahhh, how cuuuuttteee' brand. Especially when they go about twenty pounds. But when the wife finally broke down and decided to let another animal live indoors with us she was taken in by his good manners and friendly demeanor.

So we paid his bail and took him home. Cat didn't say a meow for close to four weeks; we actually thought that he was mute. He finally broke down and started talking. Usually just a 'brerrrt' when you come in the room to say 'hey, there' and a little rumble when you're walking down a dark hall so you don't step on him.

He's fine animal. I feel mighty lucky that first family let him roam the streets, or we wouldn't have gotten him.

Never give a sucker an even break.

Back during the summer I built another bathroom. While there are only two of us and it is not often that circumstances indicate the need for another toilet, but damnme if the circumstances didn't arise often enough that I felt another bath would be prudent.

And I must have done an acceptable job of it, because the wifewoman has decided that what we should do now is move our bedroom to the former guestroom because 'Then we'll have the better bathroom attached to the bedroom and it'll be a master suite'.

Excuse me?

I'm perfectly happy sleeping in the same room I've slept for 15 years. 'Course, I'm also perfectly happy sleeping with the same woman for the last 35 or 36 years (I'm not really sure. I could wake her up and ask her which it is, but I'd just as soon not.) That right there tells you that the razorbacker does not crave added excitement. Life itself seems to be exciting enough at the moment, thanks.

So tomorrow I get to start changing that which does not need changing.

Wonder what Obama is doing this week? He has a bit of experience changing that which doesn't need changing.
