From Zooborns:
Just today (Australia time) the Taronga Zoo unveiled their newest baby wombat. Baby Matari will be hand-reared at the zoo. In the wild, wombat moms are professional diggers and rarely take maternity leave. For this reason they have backwards facing pouches (unlike most other marsupials) to protect their young from flying dirt and rocks.
I did not know wombats had backwards pouches. The stuff you learn at this blog.

At least it looks like Obama is going to give me the time to decide. He's so over his head that he can't even tread water. If he were to try to go for gun control now, the Blue Dog Democrats might just ask for his resignation.

The wombat's pouch evolved into it's current "upside-down" position by tiny increments of an angle over millions of years due to slight advantages in natural selection. During this time, it's likely that the wombat digging behavior went sideways to keep dirt out of its pouch. Of course, there's the question of whether the evolution took a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Perhaps one could speculate on the coriolis effect . . . nevertheless, it is likely that the next evolutionary step is for its nose to follow for the same reason.
Yes, it's very cute.

I thought the Republicans were suppose to be the elitist.
Pelosi Made Repeated Requests for Military Aircraft, Documents Show
In one e-mail, aide Kay King complained to the military that they had not made available any aircraft the House speaker wanted for Memorial Day recess.
"It is my understanding there are NO G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable ... The Speaker will want to know where the planes are," King wrote.
In another, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King wrote: "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset Speaker."
These assholes actually think they're entitled to whatever they want.

At least 10 dead in two-town Alabama shooting spree
At least 10 people were killed Tuesday in a shooting spree that spanned two small southern Alabama towns, state officials confirmed. The gunman, who turned the gun on himself, and the wife and child of a sheriff's deputy were among those killed. The shooting started in a neighborhood in Samson, a town of about 3,000 about 15 miles north of the Florida border, just after 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) and ended 12 miles away at a manufacturing plant in Geneva, said Alabama state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, who represents Geneva County.

What did Sir Gus O'Donnell, Britain's most senior civil servant, say about the US senior administration yesterday (today, but yesterday for the UK):
Downing Street is finding it "unbelievably difficult" to plan for next month's G20 summit in London because of problems tracking down senior figures in the US administration.
"There is nobody there. You cannot believe how difficult it is," the Cabinet Secretary told a civil service conference in Gateshead.

I don't know that I'd want to vote for Newt. Didn't say I wouldn't, mind you, just that I don't think I'd want to. He has much to recommend him, but he has much to not recommend him. I wasn't particularly impressed by how he and Dole (shudder) handled the House and Senate after they took the leadership of the respective bodies in the 1994 election.
The voters voted a Revolution. The Republicans never really delivered on that. Better than the Democrats, certainly, but after a while the diligent refrain of "We Suck Less!" wears thin. Especially toward the end there, when it was difficult to say exactly how they sucked less.

re: #97 Spar Kling
The wombat's pouch evolved into it's current "upside-down" position by tiny increments of an angle over millions of years due to slight advantages in natural selection. During this time, it's likely that the wombat digging behavior went sideways to keep dirt out of its pouch. Of course, there's the question of whether the evolution took a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Perhaps one could speculate on the coriolis effect . . . nevertheless, it is likely that the next evolutionary step is for its nose to follow for the same reason.
Yes, it's very cute.
-sk
Are you going to credit Geoffrey Simmons for that thought?
"The wombat has an upside-down pouch. Scientists presume, and it makes sense, that position prevents dirt from entering the pouch when the wombat is digging in the ground. Could there have been transitional species with pouches situated sideways, or did the first wombats have to scoop dirt out of their pouches every day?"

re: #160 Sharmuta
Here's a response to Geoffrey's thought:
"The author is using a technique to make evolution sound stupid by bringing up a wombat that would have a sideways pouch or that wombats would have to scoop dirt. Of course the change from right-side-up to upside-down could have simply been in one step. When a wombat came along with a mutation that led to an upside-down patch, it would have a strong advantage in being able to raise healthy young. This characterization of the wombat is laughable, yet convenient for IDers. I suspect the example was brought up because it is going to be hard to find intermediate fossils of wombat pouch evolution due to the pouch being made of soft tissue. Since soft tissues don’t fossilize, it will be hard to trace its evolution."

If Obama weren't doing so poorly right now, you might very well see the Democrats try to turn something like this into a push of more gun control. Like I said earlier, though, Obama is drowing right now in what's he's got on his plate. Trying to add "Push for new, UNPOPULAR gun conrtol measures" onto his dance list would be like throwing a drowning man a cement block. Anyway he handles it, even if it is to just get out of its way, is going to hurt him.

I doubt it. Harry Reid has made it pretty clear that such bills will not pass the Senate. There are too many Senators who cannot support such bills without severe political damage. Such bills may well be introduced, but they won't become laws.

I vaguely remember the former.
The Dunblane massacre was a multiple murder-suicide which occurred at Dunblane Primary School in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996.
The Port Arthur massacre of 28 April 1996 was a killing spree which claimed the lives of 35 people and wounded 21 others mainly at the historic Port Arthur prison colony.

How to feed a pill to a cat....
1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.
6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for glueing later.
8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.
9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink one beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
10. Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.
11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whisky compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologise to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.
13. Tie the little bxxxxxxx's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.
14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.
15. Arrange for RSPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.
How To Give A Dog A Pill
1. Wrap it in bacon.
2. Toss it in the air.

Yes, this "keeping out dirt" idea is now the most popular scientific explanation, which is similar to the reason given for the evolution of the female hymen in humans, horses, hyenas, and a few other mammals (but paradoxically not chimpanzees though).
But on reflection, this speculation might not be correct after all. As someone pointed out previously, the direction of the wombat's pouch is facing in a more natural direction, where the embryos would come from. So, it's far more likely that all the other marupials' pouches are "upside-down," reversing themselves. After all the hopping that kangaroos do, they must have lost too many developing young, and the survival of the fittest did not leave enough of them.
One wonders whether their common ancestor didn't start with a sideways pouch with openings at both ends, to also act as a paw warmer. :-)

My kids have all attended charter schools in Michigan. And my wife is a 20 year veteran teacher in the public school system. The charter schools work if for no other reason than the principal can get rid of the teachers who can't or don't want to teach.

my 5th time and easiest--gum, my friend, gum! and butterscotch candies
I think this may be my fifth time as well. Never used gum or any other assitance; longest hiatus was 10 years. Not even sure why I started back last summer, easy to quit so far (sick, bronchitis helps I'm sure) but no cravings so far and really busy helps. Just got to keep building on the daily success.

A young soldier was attending some college courses between assignments. He had also completed missions in Afghanistan
One of the courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He Looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, 'God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.'
The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am God. I'm still waiting.'
It got down to the last couple of minutes when the young soldier got out of his Chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The young man went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.
The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the soldier and asked, 'What the hell is the matter with! you? Why did you do that?'
Came the reply, 'God was too busy today protecting our soldiers who are protecting your right to talk stupid and act like an asshole. So, He sent me'

I'm not critical of 0bama's statements here- just surprised by them. He's upsetting the Teacher's Unions but it's long past time they had less of a say in education. What I mean by that is the unions in particular, not teachers. I have great respect for teachers, but not their political special interest groups that worry more about the adults than the kids.
0bama wants merit pay and more charter schools. I can't disagree with him on this.

Allow cat to close mouth and swallow..
Actually, you use your offhand thumb and forefinger to spread the jaw and your favored thumb and forefinger to place the pill at the back of the tongue, pushing it past the tongue with the forefinger in one swift motion.
/cat has no choice but to swallow it, it's an art form

Gotta do what works for you and don't sweat others success or failure stories. Not even sure what drove me back after the 10 year hiatus, but the subsequent starts and stops have been easier. Mom went from driving her Buick all over town and to the Bingo Hall every other day or so to laying in the hospital bed trying to get some peace and quiet and recovery. Which is easier said than done when there are 7 kids, their spouses and 18 grandkids all living within a few miles who want to visit and chat every day.

Little Johnny replies, ‘NONE – the rest of the birds flew away!’
Miss Rogers smiles and says, ‘The correct answer is five, Little Johnny, but I like the way you think.’
‘OK, Teacher,’ says Little Johnny, ‘Now I have a question for you: there are three women sitting eating ice cream cones. The first one is just taking little licks, the second one is carefully licking up and down and all about the sides of her ice cream cone, and the third one opens her mouth wide and takes the entire ice cream cone into her mouth. Which one of these women is married?’
‘Oooh! . . . er . . . uh . . . um . . .’ Miss Rogers replies nervously, ‘Why, I suppose it’s the one who opens her mouth and takes the entire ice cream cone in her mouth . . .’
‘Wrong, Teacher!’ Little Johnny replies, ‘It’s the woman wearing the wedding ring, but I like the way you think!’

I just spent more than an hour trying to replace the turn signal flasher on a 1994 Chevrolet Beretta. This item, the most frequently replaced electrical component, is virtually buried under the left side of the dash. I took off the plastic cover under the steering column and then a metal cover, only to find yet another metal cover, this one has metal sides as well and the flasher is inside it. I never did get to the flasher, it is a 1.2 hour flat rate job since the third box has to be removed as well, along with the top of the dash. This means the better part of a hundred bucks to replace a $2.95 item.
The idiots who designed this disaster do not deserve a bailout, they deserve to be in prison. They have pillaged the land and deceived the American people for generations and now that it has finally caught up with them, our new Messiah decides to rescue them from the well-deserved ruin they brought on themselves. They are no better than thieves. And people wonder why I do not drive American marque cars myself. Screw them, willing victims, slaves, and thieves.

The point is that the CONCEPT - the veneer - is that you discourage that naughty, sinful behavoir with a punative tax, thus looking peachy keen and good by discouraging naughty behavoir. That's just smoke and mirrors (no pun intended).
The reality is they are partnering with the sinners - LEANING on the sinners - and using them, knowing full well that smokers will tend to continue to smoke, regardless.
Democrats exploit the poor more than anyone else, and especially with all the sin taxes on cigs, booze, fast food, the lottery, etc. etc.
By the way, you and the Doggs are raining hard on my house tonight.

I think I posted this once before:
The window tax was a glass tax which was a significant social, cultural, and architectural force in the kingdoms of England, Scotland and then Great Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries. Some houses from the period can be seen to have bricked-up window-spaces (ready to be glazed at a later date), as a result of the tax.[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

No, it wouldn't be. There are good non-lethal rounds you can use on a crowd like that. Scare them, bruise them, break some bones and send them running like dogs. The Islamist crowd should be dealt with in such a way. Killing is not needed or welcome, but to humiliate them would do the world a great deal of work.

Enclosed is my 2009 Form 1040, together with payment. Please take note of the attached article from USA Today archives. In the article, you will note that the Pentagon paid $171.50 each for hammers and NASA paid $600.00 each for toilet seats.
Please find enclosed in this package four toilet seats (value $2,400.00) and six hammers (value $1,029.00). This is in payment for my total tax due of $3,429.00.
Out of a sense of patriotic duty, and to assist in the political purification of our government, I am also enclosing a 1.5 inch Phillips head screw, for which HUD duly recorded and approved a purchase value of $22.00, as my contribution to fulfill the Presidential Election Fund option on Form 1040.
It has been a pleasure to pay my taxes this year, and I look forward to paying them again next year in accordance with officially established government values.
Sincerely,
Another satisfied taxpayer

I've heard tell that you can get American cigarettes from Europe by mail order at a fraction of the cost.
According to my state, it is illegal to import them without paying the tax. Each pack has to have the revenue stamps on it to be legal. I checked into all that and started buying tobacco from an Ohio co. and rolling my own.
Well, the Ohio company just announced that - iirc - pipe tobacco tax has gone way up. SIGH.
Legally, if I went to Virginia and bought more than two packs, then came back to Maryland, I'd be breaking the law.
You can get cigs from Indian res. sellers with no state tax, but they are subject to the federal tax. My understanding, though, is that if they get cease and desist orders from a state, they would have to stop sending them to that state.
The states are a bunch of blood sucking leeches.

.And God Created California!
In the Beginning
God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God. "Where have you been?"
God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look, Michael. Look what I've made."
Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?"
"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put Life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance." "Balance?" Inquired Michael, still confused.
God explained, pointing to different parts of earth. "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a land mass and said "What's that one?"
"Ah," said God. "That's California the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful beaches, deserts, streams, hills, and forests. The people from California are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, "What about balance, God? You said there would be balance!"
God replied wisely, "Wait until you see the idiots I put in Sacramento."

There's a move to ban "armor piercing ammunition," defined as any round that will penetrate the type of vest most cops wear under their uniforms. Sounds reasonable to most people (including a lot of uninformed gun owners), until you understand that it would ban virtually all full-power center fire rifle ammo. Those vests are made to stop handgun rounds.

The problem is, they've mastered the art of changing the definition of 'reasonable'. Just keep making more and more absurdly unreasonable demands, and pretty soon the previously unimaginable sounds reasonable in comparison.
Conservatives have to give up any pretense of 'fair' or 'nice' and go for the jugular. Now and forever.

They were showing all of the guns confiscated in various arrest just from the housing project.
There were the usual Tec 9's, AKs, a few AR 15s, etc.

Without hesitation he pulled out a Winchester Model 70 .30-06.

NASA and the Navajo
When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took the astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training.
One day, a Navajo elder and his son came across the space crew walking among the rocks.
The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question.
His son translated for the NASA people: "What are these guys in the big suits doing?"
One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon.
When his son relayed this comment the Navajo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give
to the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.
Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts
said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder.
The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said.
The son listened to the recording and laughed uproariously. But he refused to translate. So the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They too laughed long and loudly but also refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.
Finally, an official government translator was summoned. After he finally stopped laughing
the translator relayed the message:
"Watch out for these assholes. They have come to steal your land."

I didn't start smoking the evile weed until I was in my mid-twenties. Tobacco, I mean. Started then out of laziness and simple go-along-to-get-along (you didn't have to smoke to work for RJR, but sitting in sales meetings without smoking was torture. And the smokes were free.) Smoked for about 15 years, then quit when I took early retirement.
Took me probably five years to be able to finally say, "Naw, I don't smoke." and really mean it.
But I do, of course. Smoke a cigar if the mood strikes, after a long day and with a drink of some sort. Doesn't seem to matter what brand. It isn't so much the taste as the ritual of it all.

The black market is already in existence and competitive. The government legalizing it would result in a handful of licensed, regulated growers being able to eliminate most of the underground growers. Modern kids and young adults wouldn't deal with the hassle of a source if they can get it risk-free from SuperAmerica. Most also wouldn't bother with growing it themselves.
Once you have it well regulated and controlled with a nice growing addicted user base, THEN jack up the taxes.

Well legalizing and taxing drugs is a fairly complex subject. Folks ARE gonna do drugs, no two ways about it. And if you legalize it, make the government the sole legal seller of it, some enterprising criminals will find a way to sell better quality drugs at lower prices (they don't gotta pay no stinking taxes!) and the net result is that folks keep using drugs - but some may "try" them when they otherwise might not because they are illegal and the criminal penalities can be very high.

None of the hard core drugs would ever be legalized. Marijuana is about the most benign but it would probably face class action law suits due to the cancerous nature of the drug -- not unlike cigarets. Of course it would save a lot of money in cutting down law enforcement spending. Under Federal law marijuana is put on the same class as meth. That seems rather extreme and not based on scientific evidence.

The problem with legalization is not the cost to the now-legal addicts. It is the cost to those around them, and to society in general. Yes, people will do stupid things and drugs are one of the most common, but you don't have an obligation to encourage them in their folly. And I have no moral obligation to pay for the clean up of their stupidity.
I can attest to this as the result of a couple of generations of drug abuse and failed marriages LARGELY ATTRIBUTABLE to the drugs.

I think drugs should be legalized for adults, and taxed enough to cover the enforcement and rehab for anyone who wants it.
It would dry up money for criminal gangs and also make it easier for people to get off drugs. However, maybe we'd have to charge Hollywood celebrities extra.
The problem is the victims. Not the drug users. But families and children. I do foster care and almost all the kids we've cared for are children of drug users. The need for many of the drugs over rides the responsibility for caring for the children.
Drugs are not a victimless past time.
I argee what we are doing isn't working. That somehow taking the profit away from criminal enterprises is a worthwhile goal.
But there are more than just the users at stake.

Over the years I've heard many arguments for the legalization of them. The effort is out there.
Also, don't forget the 'Valium mom' phenomenon. It never really ended although the numbers decreased and the drugs prescribed changed over the years. My grandmother started on Valium in the 60's and has never been off something since. Now she's on some combination of half a dozen drugs including Xanax and the Morphine patch. All totally legal, prescribed by physicians. I've come to realize I'll never really know who she really was.

Semo OT: Stinky cat poops
Zoe my kitten had occasional bouts of diarrhea and constantly stinky poops for years. Her poops would stink up the whole house for an hour or so. Really bad. Vets were baffled, medicines didn't work. I finally notice that regular snacks of wheat grass clears up the problem. If you check the bulk food section of the grocery store they sell the seeds as 'Wheat berries". Germinate in a pot of soil for about a week and then put it out for the cats. It works wonders. My mom's cat had chronic diarrhea for years. A few weeks of wheat grass and no more problems.

Many, many of the people who don't smoke or drink or use any of the so-called "sin tax" drugs are simply supplementing with prescription drugs. SOMA is here already. People want to alter their consciousness. Is a 6-pack any different than a Xanax? It's a valid question.

That's a good example. "Legal" drugs and the problem they cause for families and society. People know they aren't supposed to abuse them but they still do. Legalizing hard core drugs would only add another layer to an already serious and growing problem. A lot of this is beyond "law enforcement" or "legality" issues and deals more with society or psychology.

What's different in the relative scope of human history is that people once used whatever they could produce on their own--barley wine, hard cider (I've heard that the real legend of Johnny Appleseed is that he brought farmers the seeds that could give them the keys to the juice!), ganga, or whatever. Despite the harder lives they lived, people in those earlier times were much freer to choose how they wanted to live. Hell, many of them had much shorter life expectancy and they just did the best they could.

The medical wing of my family would agree with you. My brother, who is part of the medical wing did rotatins in the inner city. He has some very colorful stories.
Not to really poke my nose in the legalize drugs discussion, I'll make a distinction about what is the hard vs. soft based on how fast it kills you and how much it destroys your mind.
If you allow alchohol, I don't understand why pot is an issue. For the record, I don't partake and I drink very, very sparingly.
I will say though that I have never seen a stoned college kid pick a fight, or puke on someone, or wake up next to someone they regretted waking up next to.
The hard drugs though destroy people utterly. We can argue about individual freedoms as much as we like, but a hard drug addict is a danger to themselves and others. It is to the benefit of society to keep them illegal.

I know. I'm just saying that people now have access to so many drugs, be they natural or man-made, at relatively cheap prices. And many of them have the leisure to use them and still be classified as "functional." A Puritan or a Zen Buddhist would insist that the only way to live life fully and purely is without any kind of consciousness-altering substance. I'm not sure I would disagree with them, but the fact is the culture as a whole has ready access to these substances and fewer personal/moral objections to them. In fact, the largest cultural group that makes a firm stand abainst any of these substances is Islam, and yet they have way bigger problems. It's a tough question.

It's different when you take harder drugs for illness. I know when was prescribed Vicoden for dental work it was just a drug to numb the pain. Thus the experience was far from what many would see as a high. It wasn't a high at all and in fact it really didn't take much of the pain away. When I would tell some people that I had some Vicoden "for my teeth" they would sometimes express this fascinating interest in it for recreational use.

I take no offense. I also offer none. But I've heard the 'what harm does it do?' countless times from people that have done me great harm over the years because of their addictions.
Dozens of varieties of pot, many kinds of hash, speed, coke, acid. Plenty more that I've blocked out over the years. They destroyed my dad's life, mostly destroyed my mom's. 'Sticking' to pot didn't do much. Combine that with my mom's parent's marriage also coming apart from drugs, and I'm surprised my closest uncle and I survived our childhoods.
Some drugs are 'worse' than others. They destroy your life more quickly. The end result is the same. Pot merely turns you into a drooling lifeless zombie. I've seen it. I GREW UP with it.

Talk about quirks! I once had a cat named Boots (all-dark-grey cat with white paws) that was the toughest thing around.
This cat would disappear in the neighborhood for hours at a time. Our house, it seemed, was just a place to sleep and get food.
One day, out of curiosity, I followed Boots on one of his adventures. I remember being astounded that dogs three times his size would run to the backyard when they saw him coming down the street! I saw him run into another dog that obviously didn't know who Boots was. Just one of Boots' hiss, and the dog hid behind his owner!
Several months after that, Boots came home one day missing a piece of his ear, and had actually a chunk taken out of his skull – you could see a bit of Boots' brain! When I let the cat in, he went over to his bowl, and was more worried about getting his food than about his injuries.
That weekend, we took him to the vet to get stitched up. I won't go into detail about the impossibility of trying to manage him in the car, or how difficult it was for the vet to give Boots a shot, so he would sleep and could get stitched up. Boots didn't seem to notice much difference afterwards, though.
About a year and a half after that, Boots went out on one of his adventures, and just never came home. I never knew if he finally picked the wrong fight, or maybe got hit by a car (who knows? maybe he found a cute girl cat and moved in there), but I like to think he finally found the peace that he needed in his life.

Success! I finally got the flasher replaced on that accursed Chevrolet Beretta.
As usual when dealing with the products or plans of the stupid and evil, brute force turned out to be the best solution. I used a hacksaw and a Dremel tool to cut through the third metal cover and the box of which it is part. The flasher was right there. In the usual GM fashion it had to pried away from the plug with a screwdriver but the new one is finally in and working.

re: #665 Timbre
When my cat runs into the garage expecting it to be moist food in a can day, and I sprinkle some dry in his already full dry food, well, let's just say his look has me backing out of the garage slowly into the house. "Good cat, don't attack Daddy."
I had a cat that used to stalk anybody that was in the house or in the yard.
I was standing in my parents kitchen and the cat came from the living room on a dead run ran up my pants leg, stop at my waist, looked at me and then disappered back into the living room. He would stalk you if you left your bedroom door open when you went to bed.

What kind of neck aches? My neck is shot. When I move it around it make the sound similar to like "calcium deposits." And it aches 24/7.
I've been told plain old muscle tension. I get knots along the trapezius that even a first year physiology student could feel. It's not really a cervical issue, just muscle.

Night realwest. If you have a tv in your bedroom, fall asleep watching some hilarious comedy or something.
I had strange dreams last night too. Not scary, just weird.

Really? Even all the crack and bumps it makes? It really started when I was in my mid twenties and evolved into a different pain. The occasional pain in my 20s was actually worse and evolved into this which drives me crazy but isn't as bad as the accute pain during that time. More than likely it's from computer use.

re: #694 gmsc
Good old Boots.
We got the current cat because his former family didn't get him cut, so he wandered. Wandered into a live trap, and ended up at the pound.
Not much hope for an adult tomcat. They're not really the 'ahhh, how cuuuuttteee' brand. Especially when they go about twenty pounds. But when the wife finally broke down and decided to let another animal live indoors with us she was taken in by his good manners and friendly demeanor.
So we paid his bail and took him home. Cat didn't say a meow for close to four weeks; we actually thought that he was mute. He finally broke down and started talking. Usually just a 'brerrrt' when you come in the room to say 'hey, there' and a little rumble when you're walking down a dark hall so you don't step on him.
He's fine animal. I feel mighty lucky that first family let him roam the streets, or we wouldn't have gotten him.

I am so old I think Baretta's were made by Dodge/Chrysler.
Dad was a GM dealer back in the day. He used to get so ticked off at the thousands and thousands of dollars you had to put into the GM special tools. He was old school.

Yeah. The Miracle Lab. Can't wait. Actually sounds like a dream I had. Seriously though by the time Obama gets through with this I'd have to move into a dive to afford the taxes and then I'd have another set of problems.

My kids have all attended charter schools in Michigan. And my wife is a 20 year veteran teacher in the public school system. The charter schools work if for no other reason than the principal can get rid of the teachers who can't or don't want to teach.
Only if you have a principal qualified to make that call...I just mention this after my brief experience with charter schools.

'Geez, Gus, ain't you never seen Reefer Madness? Couple of puffs of that devil weed will make you dance, laugh like a loon, then lead to death and/or defilement.
Can't have that.
A friend introduced me to the Reefer Madness musical. I can only say: I want some of that weed they had in the 30s. It is clearly way better than the weed we have today.

Never give a sucker an even break.
Back during the summer I built another bathroom. While there are only two of us and it is not often that circumstances indicate the need for another toilet, but damnme if the circumstances didn't arise often enough that I felt another bath would be prudent.
And I must have done an acceptable job of it, because the wifewoman has decided that what we should do now is move our bedroom to the former guestroom because 'Then we'll have the better bathroom attached to the bedroom and it'll be a master suite'.
Excuse me?
I'm perfectly happy sleeping in the same room I've slept for 15 years. 'Course, I'm also perfectly happy sleeping with the same woman for the last 35 or 36 years (I'm not really sure. I could wake her up and ask her which it is, but I'd just as soon not.) That right there tells you that the razorbacker does not crave added excitement. Life itself seems to be exciting enough at the moment, thanks.
So tomorrow I get to start changing that which does not need changing.
Wonder what Obama is doing this week? He has a bit of experience changing that which doesn't need changing.

Cats only need a wet diet because you think that's what they like.
What they need is a dry diet with adequate nutrition, they'll eat the same thing every day and look forward to it.
/unlike you, they don't need variety, it's actually bad for domestic cats
