gmsc's money tips #21:

I've recently run across several great sites which have long lists of valuable money-related resources, so I thought I would share them with you.

First up, there's 30 Free eBooks To Learn Everything You Want to Know About Personal Finance from the Mint Blog. Despite the title, there are actually 31 free eBooks on this site.

How about simple ideas for making money? freemoneyfinance's money-making post archives have some interesting and original ideas for making extra money on the side. One of the more interesting ideas in this archive is how to make money by buying money (nope - no foreign exchange involved!).

What about investing? Try going through the archives of the ABCs of Investing, starting with their introductory post back in September 2008. As you know, I'm a big fan of building on a solid foundation of knowledge, basics and principles.

Speaking of principles, the Ludwig von Mises Institute has some interesting articles on not only the basics of money, but the government corruption of it, as well.

I'll close with this list of the 100 Most Useful Financial Sites On the Web, which is a good one to keep revisiting as you have the time.

The financial crisis explained in simple terms

Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Berlin.
In order to increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers
- most of whom are unemployed alcoholics - to drink now but pay later.
She keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger
(thereby granting the customers loans).

Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flood
Into Heidi's bar.

Taking advantage of her customers' freedom from immediate payment
constraints, Heidi increases her prices for wine and beer, the
most-consumed beverages. Her sales volume increases massively.

A young and dynamic customer service consultant at the local bank
recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and increases
Heidi's borrowing limit.

He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the
alcoholics as collateral.

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert bankers transform these
customer assets into DRINKBONDS, ALKBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These
securities are then traded on markets worldwide.
No one really understands what these abbreviations mean and how the
securities are
guaranteed.

Nevertheless, as their prices continuously climb, the securities become
top-selling items.

One day, although the prices are still climbing, a risk manager
(subsequently of course fired due his negativity) of the bank decides
that slowly the time has come to demand payment of the debts incurred by
the drinkers at Heidi's bar.

However they cannot pay back the debts.

Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations and claims bankruptcy.

DRINKBOND and ALKBOND drop in price by 95 %. PUKEBOND performs better,
stabilizing in price after dropping by 80 %.

The suppliers of Heidi's bar, having granted her generous payment due
dates and having invested in the securities are faced with a new
situation.

Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, her beer supplier is taken over by
a competitor.

The bank is saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock
consultations by leaders from the governing political parties.

The funds required for this purpose are obtained by a tax levied against
the non-drinkers.

Best mini-series ever. I read the book first. I got hooked on it by listening to Steven Ambrose interviews. Read the book and then watched the movies. Ambrose was one of the best.

I was amused by everyone's excitement over the news that Citibank's operating expenses were running at a profit.

Ummm . . . a couple of thoughts:

1) Gee, you're getting money from the government at 0% interest, and loaning it out at a higher interest rate? I'd sure hope you're making a profit doing that – otherwise, something would be seriously wrong!

2) I don't recall your operating profit ever being the problem. I can show you plenty of people who can boast about making $1 million/year. However, they're still struggling because they spend $2 million/year.

3) Was this timed to help cheer everyone up? Last I heard, financial reports weren't given halfway through the quarter.

If you haven't seen it already, Camille Paglia goes postal on the Obama White House.

President Obama -- in whom I still have great hope and confidence -- has been ill-served by his advisors and staff. Yes, they have all been blindsided and overwhelmed by the crushing demands of the presidency. But I continue to believe in citizen presidents, who must learn by doing, even in a perilous age of terrorism. Though every novice administration makes blunders and bloopers, its modus operandi should not be a conspiratorial reflex cynicism.

Case in point: The orchestrated attack on radio host Rush Limbaugh, which has made the White House look like an oafish bunch of drunken frat boys. I returned from carnival in Brazil (more on that shortly) to find the Limbaugh affair in full flower. Has the administration gone mad? This entire fracas was set off by the president himself, who lowered his office by targeting a private citizen by name. Limbaugh had every right to counterattack, which he did with gusto. Why have so many Democrats abandoned the hallowed principle of free speech? Limbaugh, like our own liberal culture hero Lenny Bruce, is a professional commentator who can be as rude and crude as he wants.

I don't agree with Camille Paglia on a lot of issues -- but I am definitely in agreement with her assessment of the Obama Administration.

Those idiots really don't know WTF they're doing. Unfortunately, POTUS is not a job that lends itself to OJT.

Currently, the words that best describe the Obama Administration are EPIC FAIL.

When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell.. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually,
show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes,
pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they're welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid,
takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow
stuffed under her sweater.

She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother, and I'm going to tell you about his birthday.'

''First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom's stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.'

She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not to
laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.

'Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going, 'Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked around the house for, like an hour, 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.)

' My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn't have a sign on the car like the Domino's man.
They got my Mom to lie down in
bed like this.' (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.)

'And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like
psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming
water flowing away. It was too much!)

'Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push,' and 'breathe,breathe.

They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a
sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, (placenta) so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him for crawling up in there.'

Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat.

I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it's
show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another ' Middle Wife' comes along.

That's a good project. Last year we grew a lot more corn than we could eat and had a big feast with neighbors and friends. Tomatoes all over the place after we put up fencing to keep the deer out, and lots of garlic, asparagus, peppers and pumpkins.

1, The American people elect a black president with a total of 42 days experience as a U S Senator from the most politically corrupt state in America whose governor is ousted from office. The President's first official act is to close Gitmo and make sure Terrorists civil rights are not violated.

2, The U.S. Congress rushes to confirm a black Attorney General, Eric Holder, whose law firm we later find out represents seventeen Gitmo Terrorists.

3, The CIA Boss, Leon Penetta with absolutely no experience, has a daughter Linda we find out, that is a true radical anti-American activist who is a supporter of all the Anti-American regimes in the western hemisphere.

4. We got the most corrupt female in America as Secretary of State; bought and paid for.

5. We got a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary who files his own taxes.

6. A Commerce Secretary nominee who withdrew due to corruption charges.

7. A Tax cheat nominee for Chief Performance Officer who withdrew under charges.

8. A Labor Sec'y nominee who withdrew under charges of unethical conduct...

9. A Sec'y HHS nominee who withdrew under charges of cheating on his taxes.

And that's just the first two weeks . . . but who's counting.

At 3 am there were 3 deer lounging around my backyard. I have to figure out how to (economically) fence in my square foot garden. Last year we grew our vegetable on the deck.

I had a LOT of steel fenceposts and 2x4 wire mesh fencing from silt fence that came from construction projects over the past few years. That's free fencing. You can get new stuff from your farm supply store and it's pretty reasonable in the price department. You can usually borrow or rent a driver for the steel fence posts. Don't try to drive them in with a sledge hammer because I can guarantee mangled hands before you're done. For deer you have to make the fences at least 8 ft high, so I extend the fenceposts with 1/2" galvanized iron water pipe that I scrounged from a scrap yard. You can also use concrete reinforcing bar which is also low cost. Get some tie wire (aka baling wire) from the farm supply store while you're there and use to tie the post extenders and the fence wire to the posts. It's kind of an awkward job but well worth it if you want to save anything from the deer.
