Tariq Aziz Gets 15 Years

Saddam Hussein henchman Tariq Aziz has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his part in the kangaroo court trial and execution of 42 Baghdad merchants; apparently Aziz still has influence in Iraq, because two of Hussein’s half-brothers are going to be hanged.

BAGHDAD, March 11 — An Iraqi court sentenced Iraq’s former foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, and Ali Hassan al-Majeed, a senior colleague of Saddam Hussein, to 15 years in prison Wednesday for their role in what the court deemed a crime against humanity, the killing of 42 merchants in Baghdad in 1992 for profiteering.

The sentence was the first against Aziz, a fluent English speaker who was the public face of Hussein’s government before turning himself into U.S. authorities a month after his government fell in April 2003. It comes less than two weeks after the 73-year-old Aziz was acquitted by the same court, Iraq’s highest, in another case.

Two of Hussein’s half-brothers, Watban Ibrahim al-Hassan and Sabawi Ibrahim al-Hassan, were sentenced to death for their role in the executions.

Not ideal at all, a noose would have been the best option, but, it does seem to be a death sentence, unless he is quietly released, which is a distinct possibility. Hopefully, the bastard dies in prison.

There are multiple trials and cases pending against the Saddam henchmen, including Chemical Ali and Aziz. The Iraqi courts are proceeding to go through them in an orderly fashion. Eventually one of those cases may result in a death sentence.

The Iraqis are providing more justice and rule of law than ever seen under Saddam's rule. For this, I applaud the ruling.

Per Wiki:

During the late stages of the Iran–Iraq War Ali Hassan was given the post of Secretary General of the Northern Bureau of the Ba'ath Party, in which capacity he served from March 1987 to April 1989. This effectively made him Saddam's proconsul in the north of the country, commanding all state agencies in the rebellious Kurdish-populated region of the country. He soon displayed his characteristic ruthlessness, ordering the indiscriminate use of chemical weapons such as mustard gas, sarin, tabun and VX against Kurdish targets. The first such attacks occurred as early as April 1987 and continued into 1988, culminating in the notorious attack on Halabja in which over 5,000 people were killed.

Mustard gas? Sarin? VX?
Whatever faith IT claims, IT has no soul.

OT: Peek into a moonbat mind:

"Missouri Republicans believe in fairies, unicorns"

"Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a little pro-choice fairy named Freedom of Choice Act. Now FOCA wasn't your average magical fairy; she was so magical she was invisible! Every day, FOCA the invisible, magical fairy would fly across the land and tell sad, oppressed little girls they were worthy, wonderful creatures, with the ability to make their own choices in life. FOCA was loved throughout the land, even though none of the little girls she helped could see her.

But evil forces lurked in the center of the land. In an old stone building high on a hill, a group of old, pale men called the Missouri Republicans would plot ways to destroy the people who were not like them, especially the little girls FOCA loved so much. Of course, the Missouri Republicans had never seen the invisible FOCA, but they were scared the little girls she helped would actually start believing they were worthy, wonderful creatures with the ability to make their own choices. Choice was like kryptonite to the Missouri Republicans."

U.N. to scrutinize Obama on counter-terrorism

U.N. human rights investigators on Tuesday announced a global investigation into secret detention and said they would not relax scrutiny of U.S. counter-terrorism policies under President Barack Obama.

"We will not let the United States off the hook simply because of the change in administration," said Martin Scheinin, U.N. special rapporteur on protecting human rights while countering terrorism.

"It is certainly too early to say that rendition will have stopped," he told reporters.

OT: What’s in President Obama’s Portfolio?

Last week, President Obama said that buying stock is a “potentially good deal if you’ve got a long-term perspective on it.” So, the question is, what is the President investing in?

The answer: we don’t know.

But then again, neither does he.

The Obamas’ investments are held in something called a “blind trust.” This type of trust is constructed so that the President and First Lady have no knowledge of what they’re actually investing in, thereby eliminating possible conflicts of interest. Prior to his run for the presidency, the then-Senator put all of his family’s stock investments in a trust that was overseen by an independent trustee. Once in the trust, the Obamas could make no special buy or sell requests. The trustee/advisor could buy and sell stocks independently, without telling the Obamas the details of the transactions, leaving the President in the dark about his investments.

Carville quote:

"Look, if George W. Bush and his Republican cronies walked on water, I'd be the guy out there yelling that they couldn't swim. "

Minutes later, as news of the terrorist attacks reached the hotel conference room where the Democrats were having breakfast with the reporters, Carville announced: "Disregard everything we just said! This changes everything!"

Did Bush or the then Republican Controlled Congress threaten Carville with prosecution and Congressional investigations? Or demand he be muzzled?

Yet the entire political establishment goes BALLISTIC when Rush Limbaugh, a PRIVATE citizen (Carville is not a private citizen since he has directed political campaigns in the past), dares to voice an opinion of wanting Obama's POLICIES to fail.

/especially now that Rush has revealed it.

He may be screaming at some point, but the story is only a few hours old. BTW, not saying he did not say it, just a basic mistrust of the MSM.

This phrase, whose roots are in Aristotle's writings on logic, came into English in the late 1500s. In the 1990s, however, people sometimes used the phrase as a synonym of "ask the question" (as in The article begs the question: "What are we afraid of?").

Don't even get me started on that. I never made it through a single episode of Sex & The City - a friend told me to try it. When one character said she wasn't having sex with her new boyfriend yet and the other character called her stupid for that, I gave up in disgust.

I'm tired of tolerance only going one way.

You got further than I did. The one and only time I turned it on, the blonde was having sex on the fender of a fire truck with a very attractive fire fighter. I was expecting witty banter and sophisticated humor, and I get a truck stop whore. No thanks.

re: #223 avanti

If we are going to fight about my poor use of grammar I'll award you the win. I just don't obsess over a turn of phrase.

This isn't a grammar question. It's a question of proper usage and meaning. As buzzsawmonkey notes, improper usage makes you look simultaneously pretentious and ignorant. It also obscures your meaning and makes communication difficult. You are not the Red Queen and you can't make words mean whatever you like. Using language precisely and correctly facilitates the exchange of ideas, which I believe is why we are all here.

I don't mean to pick on you personally about this; I'm just making an example. If one person uses a word or phrase idiosyncratically, and another responds using the dictionary definition, they are talking past each other. The substance of the discussion is lost in a confusion of language. Again not to pick on you, but this is a favorite tactic of the left. Just as any country with "democratic republic" in its name is probably neither democratic nor a republic, most organizations whose name includes words like "peace," "justice," "people's," "fair, "or "unity" are probably socialist pressure groups whose use of those terms bears no resemblance to their common meaning. Insisting on clear, precise, accurate language is vital to clear, precise, accurate thinking.

CHEMICAL ALI (sung to the tune of "Black Superman" by Johnny Wakelin and The Kinshasa Band)
"Black Superman" was a hit on the radio in the mid-1970s, when Muhammad Ali ruled the boxing ring. The tune was a neat and a corny song at the same time. So when a certain official of Saddam's Ba'ath Party was captured in the aftermath of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I thought it was time to "pay tribute" to someone who will go down in history alongside Dr. Josef Mengele.

This is about Ali Hassan al-Majid
He once was known as Chemical Ali
He knew how to intimidate but forgot how to flee
And so we captured him in two thousand three

Refrain
Sing Chemical, Chemical Ali
The gas floats like butterflies and stings like a bee
Chemical, Saddam’s gassin’ man
Who calls to Kofi Annan I'm Ali catch me if you can

Now all you war fans, you've got to agree
There’s no such scruples with Chemical Ali
He fills the jails wherever he goes
And Ba’athists get what they paid for

Chemical was known to have said
Kurds are revolting so I'll choke 'em till dead
He becomes Saddam’s gassin’ man
And calls to Iranians I'm Ali catch me if you can

He thought he was the greatest the world’s ever seen
Then came the willing who turned his face green
His face was so pretty on the deck of cards
Which proved he was with the Ba’ath Party by far

Sing Chemical, Chemical Ali
The gas floats like butterflies and stings like a bee
Chemical, Saddam’s gassin’ man
Who calls to George W. I'm Ali catch me if you can

Sing Chemical, Chemical Ali
The gas floats like butterflies and stings like a bee
Chemical, Saddam’s gassin’ man
Who calls to Mr. Tony Blair I'm Ali catch me if you can

(Coalition Soldiers)
You’re Ali...gotcha now you’re DEAD!
