Shuttle Launch Postponed

NASA has postponed the scheduled launch of the space shuttle Discovery until Sunday or Monday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA has postponed the launch of space shuttle Discovery because of a gas leak. The leak of gaseous hydrogen occurred as the launch team was filling the external fuel tank for liftoff Wednesday night. The seven astronauts had yet to board the spaceship.

Discovery’s flight to the international space station is already a month late because of concern about hydrogen gas valves in the engine compartment. NASA officials say the leak occurred in plumbing outside of the shuttle and had nothing to do with those valves.

In related news NASA discovered that people considered for Obama sub-cabinet picks had been employed at the visitors center at the Space Launch center and the shuttle crew are refusing to board until the whole thing is inspected and reassembled.

I can't deny a little trepidation over the fact that when I was on the way to work this morning there was a radio piece on how one of the astronauts is a former teacher from MD and would wear a t-shirt given to him from the kids at the school. It was like the Onion article about how a teacher, some kittens, and a bunch of orphans were about to go up on the Challenger mission.

I have a buddy who worked for Aerojet designing solid fuel rocket motors. He once told me that the Aerojet brass figured out they could buy remnant liquid fueled rocket motors dirt cheap from the Soviet space program. They got the first one in and couldn't believe the Soviets could make the thing even light off without exploding into a million pieces. They leaked fuel all over the place and the fuel lines looked like they had been formed around a tree trunk or something. There is a side story to this where one of the Soviet engineers that came over to check on the problems ended up drunk as hell on Vodka water sking Folsom Lake with the Aerojet engineers - he ended up drowning that day.

IIRC, most of her gyros have malfunctioned. One more failure would finish her life as a telescope. This should keep Hubble operational until the James Webb telescope is deployed.

Luton Anti-War Protest

We welcome the fact that the anti-war protestors carried out their protest peacfully. They are well within their rights to protest at the 1 million dead in Iraq because of the whims of Bush, Blair and their Ziocon stooges.

Whilst all anti-war protesters care for the troops on the whole, we are not blindly patriotic to the extent that we will turn a blind eye to the errors of the Armed Services.

Blaming troops, however, is perhaps not the wisest thing to do, neither is condemning the anti-war protestors as they are both consequences of a calculated ziocon agenda.

91 zombie  Wed, Mar 11, 2009 1:21:14pm
Discovery’s flight to the international space station is already a month late because of concern about hydrogen gas valves in the engine compartment. NASA officials say the leak occurred in plumbing outside of the shuttle and had nothing to do with those valves.

I know I'm saying this about 30 years too late, but it seems to me that the Space Shuttle just had too many design flaws. There always seem to be problem with gas leaks. And then there was the issue with the foam breaking off the fuel tanks. And of course the biggest problem of all: the heat tiles.

The Space Shuttle design was 99% brilliant, but that remaining 1% has caused a lot of hassle.

The whole purpose of making a re-usable space vehicle was to save money. But has anyone ever calculated whether or not it would have been cheaper to simply use "disposable" rockets for all these missions?

Actually, Discovery first flew a bit over 24 years ago, although its design is older. 40 years ago, we were still flying Saturn Vs and playing around in lunar orbit. (Those were the days my friends.)

However, Discovery's odometer reads a bit over 117,000,000 miles, so you may have a point.

re: #84 CyanSnowHawk

IIRC, most of her gyros have malfunctioned. One more failure would finish her life as a telescope. The repair mission will replace those and swap out some instruments, which it is hoped, will significantly extend her usefulness. This should keep Hubble operational until the James Webb telescope is deployed.

That doesn't surprise me -- they've had problems with those gyros as long as I can remember.

Just found a cool page over at NASA about the Webb telescope:

Will astronauts be able to service JWST like they did HST?

Unlike HST, which orbits roughly 350 miles above the surface of Earth and is therefore accessible by the Space Shuttle, JWST will orbit the second Lagrange point (L2), which is roughly 1,000,000 miles from Earth. There is currently no servicing capability that can be used for missions orbiting L2, and therefore the JWST mission baseline design does not rely upon a servicing option. However, the JWST Project has studied and is considering the possibility of adding a fixture to enable attachment of a future servicing vehicle to the observatory. They have also studied whether there are any types of servicing activities that might be feasible, and identified the top-level requirements that would need to be met by a future servicing capability in order to service JWST, e.g., contamination control considerations to avoid damage to exposed JWST optical surfaces.

What is JWST doing to ensure that its gyros last the full mission?

The gyroscopes on HST and Chandra are mechanical devices dependent on bearings for their function, and they face problems typical of such designs. JWST has adopted a different gyroscope technology. The "Hemispherical Resonator Gyroscope" (HRG) uses a quartz hemisphere vibrating at its resonant frequency to sense the inertial rate. The hemisphere is made to resonate in a vacuum, and the hemisphere’s rate of motion is sensed by the interaction between the hemisphere and separate sensing electrodes on the HRG housing. The result is an extremely reliable package with no flexible leads and no bearings. The internal HRG operating environment is a vacuum, thus once the gyroscope is in space any housing leaks would actually improve performance. Stress analyses of HRGs show this design has a "mean time before failure" of 10 million hours. As of June 2006, this type of device had accumulated more than 7 million hours of continuous operation in space without a failure. This new technology eliminates the bearing wear-out failure mode, leaving only random failure and radiation susceptibility of the electronics (which all such devices share, and which can be mitigated by screening and shielding).

Wait a sec, there's more, it won't fit in this comment...

re: #100 Fat Jolly Penguin

How is JWST being tested?

JWST will be tested incrementally during its construction, starting with individual mirrors and instruments (including cameras and spectrometers) and building up to the full observatory. JWST's mirrors and the telescope structure are first each tested individually, including optical testing of the mirrors and alignment testing of the structure inside a cold thermal-vacuum chamber. The mirrors are then installed on the telescope structure in a clean room at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). In parallel to the telescope assembly and alignment, the instruments are being built and tested, again first individually, and then as part of an integrated instrument assembly. The integrated instrument assembly will be tested in a thermal-vacuum chamber at GSFC using an optical simulator of the telescope. This testing makes sure the instruments are properly aligned relative to each other and also provides an independent check of the individual tests. After both the telescope and the integrated instrument module are successfully assembled, the integrated instrument module will be installed onto the telescope, and the combined system will be sent to Johnson Space Flight Center (JSC) where it will be optically tested in one of the JSC chambers. The process includes testing the 18 primary mirror segments acting as a single primary mirror, and testing the end-to-end system. The final system test will assure that the combined telescope and instruments are focused and aligned properly, and that the alignment, once in space, will be within the range of the actively controlled optics. In general, the individual optical tests of instruments and mirrors are the most accurate. The final system tests provide a cost-effective check that no major problem has occurred during assembly. In addition, independent optical checks of earlier tests will be made as the full system is assembled, providing confidence that there are no major problems.

Why is JWST being tested this way?

The most expensive tests of a large space telescope are the final system tests. The Hubble Space Telescope did not have a final system test – which could have caught the problem in the fabrication of the Hubble primary mirror – because it was deemed too complex and expensive. Unlike Hubble, JWST is not easily serviceable; thus JWST must be done right. The challenge has been to design a test strategy that assures success but is also affordable. The JWST test plan emphasizes incremental testing, accompanied by independent checks at each level of assembly to minimize the uncertainties left for the final system test. The plan does include a final system test, and this test makes use of the JWST active optics. This final test will assure that JWST can be aligned on-orbit, making the test cost effective yet retaining adequate redundancy and accuracy to detect any problems.

re: #91 zombie

I know I'm saying this about 30 years too late, but it seems to me that the Space Shuttle just had too many design flaws. There always seem to be problem with gas leaks. And then there was the issue with the foam breaking off the fuel tanks. And of course the biggest problem of all: the heat tiles.

The Space Shuttle design was 99% brilliant, but that remaining 1% has caused a lot of hassle.

The whole purpose of making a re-usable space vehicle was to save money. But has anyone ever calculated whether or not it would have been cheaper to simply use "disposable" rockets for all these missions?

When it first started flying, there was no fuel tank foam problem. Those started happening after the greenies and the EPA made them start using an enviromentally friendly foam because they thought the original was too toxic.

PLANS TO refurbish Trident nuclear weapons had to be put on hold because US scientists forgot how to manufacture a component of the warhead, a US congressional investigation has revealed. Over the last year the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which reports to the US Congress, has been investigating the W76 refurbishment programme. An unclassified version of its final report was released last week. The GAO report concluded: "NNSA ( The US National Nuclear Security Administration ) did not effectively manage one of the highest risks of the programme - the manufacture of a key material known as Fogbank - resulting in $69m in cost over-runs and a schedule delay of at least one year that presented significant logistical challenges for the navy."

re: #113 Soona'

When it first started flying, there was no fuel tank foam problem. Those started happening after the greenies and the EPA made them start using an enviromentally friendly foam because they thought the original was too toxic.

Exactly...the original recipe for the external tank foam used CFCs. NASA then changed the recipe to conform with EPA regs, even though they were exempt from doing so, because of the environuts, IIRC.

OT: Anyone here ever have the Shingles? I first thought I had a spider bite on my wrist, then 2 days later I got another "bite" midway up my forearm. They itched. Not terribly, but still annoying. Then, on the day I was going to see a friend in the hospital (Had his lower leg amputated-he's a diabetic :( )
they were starting to ooze, so I did that slimy thing and asked a medical professional for free medical advice. I asked the nurse if she thought those were spider bites. She said, no, that it might be MRSA! Yikes! How'd I get that I wondered. She said to see my Doc right away, so went the next day. Of course, couldn't see my Doctor, but a P.A. Nice, but I like others there more. Anyway, she said nope, not MRSA, might be poison Oak, or perhaps Shingles!
My Mom had a terrible case of shingles, all over her upper body, face (Both sides, even though it's supposed to only stay on one side of your body) lots of shooting pain.
So, on steroids and a steroidal cream. But...I just looked at pictures and read about Shingles, and I just don't think I have it!
2 bumps after a week? Itching, but no pain? I do have a mole under my armpit that is hurting all of the sudden, but that's it.
Incredibly long story short, anyone ever have a very mild case of the shingles? I am 42, seems to be a older persons issue...

Oh God, I hope it's not syphillis. :p

I don't think so. Geting humans to Mars is tough -- very tough. The required food and oxygen alone for such a long journey would take up the entire payload space, and more.

Bone mass loss, muscle loss, and radiation exposure are three more big hitters. Creatures that evolved on Earth are not suited to hard vacuum.

re: #162 Opilio

The Hubble gyros were problematic throughout the 90's, but haven't been much trouble since. This servicing mission will install 2 new observational instruments, repair 2 others, and replace a critical data handling unit.

The James Webb Space Telescope will complement Hubble's capabilities, but will not be able to replace them. The JWST observations will occur in the infrared spectrum only. I'm unaware of any instrument under development to replace Hubble's observational capabilities in the visible and UV regions.

8-meter and larger ground-based scopes with active optics, now equal the Hubble in the visible range. In the UV, not so much, but there's more of interest in the infra-red anyway - fortunately, since it's easier to focus.

If we can ever get optical interferometry working for images, well, that might be the next generation of space-based optical scopes - two four-foot mirrors, flying kilometers apart! Well, actually, those might be infrared too, but maybe.

Shingles virus is the same virus that causes chicken pox, varicella zoster... reactivated. You can't get shingles unless you have had chicken pox... the original virus does not go away, but hides in a nerve ganglion and reemerges as shingles. It can be really minor, or life threatening.

My 16 year old daughter was given a prescription for Valtrex. I made sure the pharmacist knew it was for shingles and not genital herpes.

"You would think this is the time he'd really knuckle down and get to work "

Carol Platt Liebau was first female managing editor of the Harvard Law Review;

It reminds me a little bit of my experience with him when he was president of the Harvard Law Review. You know, I hesitated to say a lot about this during the campaign because I really thought maybe it wasn't fair. That maybe, finally, when he got to be President, this would be a job big enough to engage and hold Barack Obama's sustained interest, because really, is there a bigger job out here?

[...]

[W]hen he was at the HLR you did get a very distinct sense that he was the kind of guy who much more interested in being the president of the Review, than he was in doing anything as president of the Review.
A lot of the time he quote/unquote "worked from home", which was sort of a shorthand - and people would say it sort of wryly - shorthand for not really doing much. He just wasn't around. Most of the day to day work was carried out by the managing editor of the Review, my predecessor, a great guy called Tom Pirelli whose actually going to be one of the assistant attorney generals now.

He's the one who did most of the day to day work. Barack Obama was nowhere to be seen. Occasionally he would drop in he would talk to people, and then he'd leave again as though his very arrival had been a benediction in and of itself, but not very much got done.

So, you know, you see that and you think, gosh, maybe that's the way the guy operates, hut then you figure ok, obviously he always had his eye on bigger and better things.

But now he's President...there really isn't a bigger or better thing.

The full audio is here.

A letter to the IRS

Dear IRS,

I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to pay taxes owed April 15 , but all is not lost.

I have paid these taxes: accounts receivable tax, building permit tax, CDL tax, cigarette tax, corporate income tax, dog license tax, federal income tax, unemployment tax, gasoline tax, hunting license tax, fishing license tax, waterfowl stamp tax, inheritance tax, inventory tax, liquor tax, luxury tax, Medicare tax, city, school and county property tax (up 3.3 percent last 4 years), real estate tax, social security tax, road usage tax, toll road tax, state and city sales tax, recreational vehicle tax, state franchise tax, state unemployment tax, telephone federal excise tax, telephone federal state and local surcharge tax, telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, telephone state and local tax, utility tax, vehicle license registration tax, capitol gains tax, lease severance tax, oil and gas assessment tax, Colorado property tax, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico sales tax, and many more that I can't recall but I have run out of space and money.

When you do not receive my check April 15, just know that it is an honest mistake.

Please treat me the same way you treated Congressmen Charles Rangel , Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and ex-Congressman Tom Daschle and, of course, your boss Timothy Geithner. No penalties and no interest.

P.S. I will make at least a partial payment as soon as I get my stimulus check.

Hasn't there been a chickenpox vaccine available for 15-20 years now?

Maybe, however we thought he had them when he was young. Unfortunately we didn't realize what it was until it had progressed a day or two. We finally got him in and they prescribed antivirals immediately. I didn't mention this but his older brother visited him when he was sick thinking the same thing we did, that he had had them in grade school too. Fortunately for him he visited the doctor at the first indication of a fever and got put right on antivirals. No scars. The turnwife and I felt pretty bad about the whole situation.

It takes a stud for building puns.

You will find to your disappointment that studs are no longer the full dimension lumber that they used to be.

So the six by six post is only a little over 5 by 5.

As in so many things, inflation robs the end user of full value.

Greetings Lizard Nation!

My crush on Jake Tapper continues.

Obama & Earmarks: One Year Ago This Week

Then-Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., one year ago this week, swooped in from the campaign trail to -- along with then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. -- vote for an amendment to impose a one-year moratorium on earmarks for fiscal year 2009.

All three then-presidential candidates voted for the amendment, offered by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC.

It failed: 71 NAYs, 29 YEAs.

Candidate Obama said then "we can no longer accept a process that doles out earmarks based on a member of Congress’ seniority, rather than the merit of the project. We can no longer accept an earmarks process that has become so complicated to navigate that a municipality or non-profit group has to hire high-priced D.C. lobbyists to do it. And we can no longer accept an earmarks process in which many of the projects being funded fail to address the real needs of our country."

Today, of course, President Obama will sign into law more than 8,000 earmarks for FY 2009, part of the $410 billion omnibus spending bill.

The Russian doctor got up and said "My country is even more advanced, we

A teacher is explaining biology to her 4th grade students.

'Human beings are the only animals that stutter,' she says.

A little girl raises her hand. 'I had a kitty-cat
who stuttered.'

The teacher, knowing how precious some of these stories
could become, asked the girl to describe the incident.

'Well', she began, 'I was in the back yard with my kitty
and the Rottweiler that lives next door got a running start and
before we knew it, he jumped over the fence into our yard!'

'That must've been scary,' said the teacher.

'It sure was,' said the little girl. 'My kitty raised her back,
went Ssss, Ssss, Ssss' and before she could say 'Shit!', the
Rottweiler ate her!

The teacher had to leave the room.

Marty wakes up at home with a huge hangover.

He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees are a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table.

He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Marty looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotless, clean. So's the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table, reading

"Honey, breakfast is on the stove. I left early to go shopping. Love you!"

He goes to the kitchen and sure enough, there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating.

Marty asks, "Son, what happened last night?"

His son says, "Well, you came home after 3 a.m., drunk and delirious. Broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door."

Confused, Marty asks, "So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"

His son replies, "Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you yelled, 'Lady, leave me alone, I'm a married man'!"

AP countersues artist over famous Obama image

NEW YORK—The Associated Press countersued an artist Wednesday over his famous image of Barack Obama, saying the image's uncredited, uncompensated use of an AP photo violated copyright laws and signaled a threat to journalism.

The artist, Shepard Fairey, sued the not-for-profit news cooperative last month over his artwork, titled "Obama Hope" and "Obama Progress," arguing that he didn't violate copyright law because he dramatically changed the image.

The artwork, based on an April 2006 picture taken for the AP by Mannie Garcia, was a popular image during the presidential campaign.

According to the AP lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, Fairey knowingly "misappropriated The AP's rights in that image." The suit, which also names several companies Fairey uses to market his work, asks the court to award AP profits made off the image and damages.

TWO DIFFERENT DOCTORS' OFFICES

(Boy, if this doesn't hit the nail on the head, I don't know what does!)

Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an X-ray, which isn't reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for a month from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

The FIRST is a Golden Retriever.
The SECOND is a Senior Citizen.
