North Korea Announces Detailed Flight Plan

For today’s test of Barack Obama, North Korea has released plans for its ballistic missile launch. McKittrick has constructed a map of the flight path.

Connecting the dots between the launch site (orange triangle) and the two danger zones where the two stages will splash (red triangles), we can see where the missle could head —- again, according to the North Koreans themselves:

They indeed plan to overfly Japan, shedding the first booster in the Sea of Japan.

Depending on the range of the missile, the trajectory is making a bee-line for Hawaii.

Could it actually reach Hawaii? Who knows ... but the North Koreans did recently test an ICBM engine that would put California in reach. Whether that engine will power this missile is unknown.

It's not just Japan's problem.

What is with the NoKo's? Are they truly nuts? The trajectory of that launch, as detailed in the article, looks like a bad joke.
"Ummm, we're just gonna launch this experimental mass of fuel and metal over the middle of your country, you don't mind do ya? Oh yeah, our Leader is certifiably insane and our military is held together by fear and death, so don't be surprised if we fail and accidentally hit one of your cities..."

Given the state of affairs in North Korean missile technology, I don't know what kind of odds you can give to where this missile will go. You can say what the intended trajectory is supposed to be as per McKittrick, but I would suggest that you use that baseline route as a cone, rather than a straight line, if the missile itself doesn't go off course during the launch phase that is.

Figure that the final landing point could be anywhere within a 500 miles of either side of that line?

Still, it is extremely troubling that the North Koreans want to launch this missile along this heading, given the repercussions of crossing Japanese airspace and Hawaii being along that same course.

Obama has also promised huge cuts in military spending, and cancellation of the missile defense program, although he does believe that another $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts is crucial for stimulating the economy.

I'm not worried, though. I'm sure that, behind the scenes, the Pentagon has mobilized thousands of troops, who even as we speak are methodically combing Washington-area video stores for DVDs of classic American films with Korean subtitles. That should take care of everything.

He promised.

It's nice to talk tough, but you can't shoot down other countries missiles unless they are a threat to your territory. Since it'll overfly Japan, they could take action, but I doubt they will, since Korea is announcing the flight plan and date of the test in advance.

Well now I'm confused (again). Does Japan have the technology to shoot this thing down or what? I think they must because they have said they might and I don't think they would bullshit around.

I suspect the Japanese would ahve the technology - tis defensive technology,a fter all, which they are allowed to ahve and develop.
This is what they said:
'Earlier this month Japan suggested it could deploy a vessel equipped with missile interceptor technology to the Sea of Japan (East Sea) to shoot the rocket down.
On Thursday, it called on North Korea to exercise restraint, saying it "would not tolerate" its moves to raise tensions in the region. '
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

No point in telling the Norks to be careful - they are drunk with madness.
But the Japanese won't take this lying down - that booster could as well land on their populated Islands, killing thousands.

Answer: because not shooting it down is too dangerous. If the Norks do this without any military response, they and other bad guys will conclude that no country has the will to stand up to them militarily. An axis of power will then form, and worse things will happen, demanding even harder decisions.

This is an easy call. The US (not Japan) should call the Nork bluff, say it will shoot down the missile, and wait. If the missile comes, the US should shoot it down. Result: Norks whine, depressed Japan breathes sigh of relief, China appreciates the gesture, and other bad guys take notice.

Update: Dutch police still questioning 2 terror suspects

Prosecutors said they found insufficient evidence to hold five of the seven people arrested Thursday, and were shifting some of their attention to finding the person who phoned in the tip from Belgium on an unregistered cell phone.

A statement from the prosecution's office appeared to cast doubt on the credibility of the bomb threat. It said one person still in custody was "being interviewed for offenses other than terrorist activities," and that stolen goods had been found during a search of his home.

But it said the investigation into the terrorist threat was continuing.

The prosecutor contradicted an earlier statement that all suspects were Dutch nationals of Moroccan origin, and said the two still being held have only Moroccan nationality.

Obama is the personifcation of taking the easy way out. Of getting something without earning it.
- Going to Harvard on God knows what credentials
- Running the Harvard Law Review without actually publishing anything
- Winning office by eliminating his opponents through technicalities - not by actually defeating them. The last election speaks for itself - Donald Duck could have won with the MFM blocking for him the way they did.
- Through all this breathtaking lack of accomplishment he did find the time to write not one but two (2), count 'em, 2 books about himself.

No wonder this is too hard for him. And no, I don't think he would have handled 9-11 in anything approaching a competent manner. And all this information was out there before the election but 52% of us seem to like the idea of gambling with the future of their country.

How do you think Obama would have handled 9/11?

He wouldn't have let the crisis go to waste. There would have been a wholesale attack on speech criticizing the President, more healthcare and welfare spending, pork for the unions and ACORN, nothing to address terroism, except perhaps more diversity classes in universities. Pretty mush the way he'll address any crisis, he'll enact his socialist agenda with no regard for the safety or security of America.

I concur, unless Russia is the actual country building it and running it and just doing it from within N. Korea. That would make me pause a bit more.

Nork is within China's sphere - and China won't let Russia have even a sniff of it, becaus that would mean a Russian presence right next to China's other border.

Brilliant. Let's let all the bad guys build up massive armies, launch missile test after missile test, and let's not do a thing about it. In fact, let's build bomb shelters and issue lots of warnings. Then, let's spend a lot of money on diplomatic trips to Pyongyang, and to other dictatorial regimes, and ask them to "unclench their fists." They will be so embarrassed, they'll beat their swords into stock shares. If things get testy over the Kobe steak course, we could threaten to stop buying high-quality North Korean exports.

Israel's Multi-Front Strategy

Israel's General Staff is weighing the possibility of a multi-front war against Iran and Syria.

Sources tell Gertz that IDF leaders have ordered feasibility studies on a potential, simultaneous strike against its two most powerful adversaries. Officials say the planning is based on Israeli intelligence assessments that the U.S. will not confront Damascus or Tehran, regardless of the threat they pose.

Got that right.

By announcing the flight plan and launch in advance they are following the international rules to cover their asses, unlike Iran which does the tests in defiance of UN resolutions. In the case of Iran, even Israel has not done anything, and they aren't exactly pussies.
If you want a POTUS that will out cowboy Israel, Japan or GW, BHO is not going to make you happy.

OK, serious question. I know that the Pakis are an ally, BUT, do we really think we can depend on them to help in any war against Al Queda and the Taliban based on what's happening in Pakistan? Am I not reading this right?

Depends on the meaning of "we," to use a Clintonism.

If "we" means the White House and State Department, then yes.

If it means those who actually have any understanding of the region, then the answer is no.

The central gov't of Pakistan is dangerously close to collapsing. Factions in the army & intelligence service are pro-Taliban, as is most of the population. Shifting the onus on Pakistan to fight the Taliban is guaranteed not only to lead to failure in Afghanistan, but the collapse of the government as well.

It is not a question of having or getting a POTUS who 'out-cowboys' anybody else.
It was a question of Japan's reaction - a sovereign nation, iirc!
This is what corrrespondets reported:
'Earlier this month Japan suggested it could deploy a vessel equipped with missile interceptor technology to the Sea of Japan (East Sea) to shoot the rocket down.
On Thursday, it called on North Korea to exercise restraint, saying it "would not tolerate" its moves to raise tensions in the region.'
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

A look on the map might be helpful - and a little thought about the high-tech capabilities of the Norks ...
To reiterate - it is Japan's right, as a sovereign nation, to warn the Norks to desist, because if that missile fails and lands on Japans Isles, heavily populated as they are - what then?
Its ok because the Norks had issued a flight plan?

Do think - not every argument is an attack on your precious PB0!

How Israel Beat Hamas

Improved tactics, new weaponry and superb intelligence allowed a "conventional" military to defeat an asymmetric foe. One retired IDF general even said the Gaza campaign was "so successful" that it could become part of the "historic memory" of Middle East nations for years to come. In other words, the pounding inflicted on Hamas could deter other hostile powers (like Iran) and terrorist organizations (read Hizballah) from provoking Israel.

You are tough!

I know many on LGF believe we should take out the nukes in Iran, the missile batteries in North Korea, and in general, bomb the fuck out of anyone that could be a threat in the future.
If you, or a loved one, was headed out to fight in one or two more wars, you might thank leaders that have cooler heads.
If you recall, GW thought we'd kick ass in Iran, be out in a few months, and the Iraq's would not only love us, but pay for the whole thing.
GW was motivated to do what he thought was the right thing, but a trillion dollars and 3000 brave, dead later, I'd hope we'd consider the cost of being tough.
I'm sick to death of us being the worlds cop, and spilling brave American blood unless we are being attacked or directly threatens. Yep, I'm a pussy when it comes to potentially ordering our troops into harms way.
Israel and Japan can deal with their dumb ass neighbors if they feel threatened, we should do the same when we are.

307 Joan Not of Arc  Fri, Mar 13, 2009 11:17:54am

I lived in South Korea for four years. Whenever I asked if North Korea would ever rejoin South Korea, I got the default answer of a one united Korea even though younger generations could see what a humongous economic burden reunification would be (not to mention the severe mental, physical and cultural effects of the North being separated and being repressed by patrilineal dictatorship).
I asked an American soldier how an attack would go down. The North- ever backed by China and Russia- would shell American bases along the DMZ and roll into Seoul. By the end of the week (without interference), the North would have complete control over the Korean peninsula. They would nuke Japan. Many North Koreans believe that Japan and America have taken South Korea as a spoil of war.
What is going on now ratchets up the tension for those south of the DMZ and keeps a starving population which cannot possibly know better due the Kim dictatorship's complete control over absolutely everything under control.
If the Obama administration had any smarts or morals, they would exclude China and Russia from six party talks, bulk up South Korea and Japan, send droves of airlifts carrying food and information over the North Korean landmass, freeze the money trail going directly in Kim Jong-Il's bank account and aid North Korean refugees however they could (North Korean refugees need dental work because they teeth are in rotten shape due to malnutrition and psychiatric care). There should be no talk of normalising relations with North Korea, nor should anyone prevent Japan from protecting itself.
I knew under Obama the crisis on the Korean Peninsula would escalate and all that idiot cares about is mixing with socialites.

Obama has also promised huge cuts in military spending, and cancellation of the missile defense program, although he does believe that another $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts is crucial for stimulating the economy.

Which is why the NoKo's are almost doing us a favor -- if they get anywhere near HI and we have to shoot the thing down, the Pentagon will win the fight over the missile defense program.

re: #246 Throbert McGee

Hmmm -- if you're firing a missile from Pyongyang and you're trying to avoid an overfly of the following:

(1) Russia
(2) China
(3) S. Korea

...you're pretty much gonna end up with a trajectory going more or less towards Hawaii.

I'd say it's a given that they don't want to overfly Russia or China. The only question is, are they accidentally aiming at Hawaii because they're deliberately avoiding S. Korea, or are they accidentally avoiding S. Korea because they're deliberately aiming towards Hawaii?

I hope that question makes sense.

A good observation. But I might conclude slightly differently. Clearly they have their reasons to avoid overflying Russia. China, and S. Korea. My globe says that this means they HAVE to fly over Japan.

IIRC, the most populous Japanese cities are in the south end of the country. Flight paths in that direction would head well south of Hawaii. So I would add to your point by saying that if, in addition to avoiding the flyover of those three countries, you decide you would rather keep your overfly of Japan to be somewhat north of Tokyo, then you have to be heading within a few hundred miles of Hawaii.

I expect that the Japanese, and (especially) the US military in Hawaii, both have the capability to quickly tell if this thing's trajectory is toward their land - plus the capability to take it down.

Actually, the fact that Obama didn't publish anything at Harvard - when he was in a position where someone usually does (IIRC, he's the only one who hasn't) - plus the fact that he has never written any other books, plus the way people say his books are well written (despite his not having had any practice) all adds up to some pretty decent support for the "Obama didn't write his own books" theory. So he wouldn't have to "find the time" to write them.

I like to think I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but this is just not the way a great writer behaves. They love to actually WRITE! Publish two books about yourself, and then quit? Not likely.

Some say at least one of the books has similarities to one by Ayers. I'd have to read them (not likely to happen) to see what I thought about that. But Ayers was instrumental in launching Obama's political career, and a good writer, so the idea seems pretty feasible. It could have been somebody else, too, I guess, but I wonder whether Obama had the resources to simply pay someone. Ayers, in contrast, may have paid himself with foundation, or Challenge money.

Sounds like the perfect field test environment for the Boeing YAL-1 airborne laser.

I think about that thing every time this comes up. IIRC, their last launch mysteriously blew up while boosting, and that's EXACTLY what this airborne laser is for. The first layer of Missile Defense is to try to knock them down before they get up to speed.

I'm surprised I've never heard anybody even suggest that we may have dispatched that thing LAST time. The beauty of it is that it would leave no tell-tale debris, unless you could tell something from the melted debris of the NK missile itself.

Don't underestimate Japan either. It has the most technologically advanced and 2nd largest military in the Far East, far more advanced than China and it's armed forces are highly trained and educated. Japan could (if willing) beat the crap out of most of the countries in Asia without breaking a sweat. Let's also not forget that the USA has numerous Air, Navy, Army and Marine bases spotted throughout mainland Japan and Okinawa. And yes, those bases have American-supplied nukes (the Japanese know this but turn a blind eye because they know it protects them).

China could obviously wreck havoc in South Korea and Japan but they do not have a method to effect a ground invasion of even Taiwan much less than Japan. China is experiencing economic problems just like the rest of the world and they don't want to make it worse for obvious domestic political reasons.

Does Japan have the willpower to defend itself? Yes, absolutely. The Japanese have certainly outwardly changed since WWII but there is and has always been an extremely strong nationalistic fervor in Japan. Japanese seem oblivious to the outside world but let me know you I know from personal experience they will NOT let someone mess with their homeland.

I believe someday that China will become the dominant power in the Western Pacific, however, that day is not even close. They are biding their time, making a few waves but nothing so serious as to effect their national agenda of making lots of money and buying the most expensive military hardware to be found (stolen).

Also, the stalemate on the Korean Peninsula is just what China's wants and I'm absolutely sure they want to maintain the status quo that keeps Japan at bay and sticks a never ending thorn in the side of the USA. If that conflict was ever resolved one way or another the USA might turn it's attention to bigger fish in the area. The threat of using force is sometimes more effective than acting on the threat. North Korea is an absolute puppet of the Chinese. NK cannot exist without Chinese support and it would take Beijing about a couple weeks to change the regime their if they saw fit. This stalemate has gone on this long because it was China's wish that it be that way.

Oh yeah, the day that NK nukes Japan will be the last day of their existence so I don't even see that as a possibility. As a last resort or survival or payback they might throw a nuke at Japan. But, it will never come as a first-strike unless China decides it wants to start another World War.

As far as shooting this missile down it's obvious to me who should do it. Japan should be the one because the missiles path takes it over Japanese territory. Yes, the USA can back Japan up with technology, Intel info etc. but it should be Japan that launches the missile not the USA.

 Frank says:

The family was from Arkansas. The Dad (Dink) was a furniture salesman in San Bernardino, but back in the way-back-when he used to play 'bones' or 'spoons' in a minstrel show. To relive the golden days of yesteryear he would, from time to time, force his children to accompany him (Ronnie on guitar, Kenny on trombone) in a living room replay of a minstrel routine called "Lazy Bones."

The kids often found this to be an inconvenience, as they were fascinated by, and constantly perfecting new techniques for, The Manly Art Of Fart-Burning. Kenny explained to me that it was scientific - that it demonstrated (this is a real quote) "Compression, ignition, combustion and exhaust." -- Kenny & Ronnie Williams (later immortalized in "Let's Make The Water Turn Black").
