Google Voice: A New Approach to Voice Communications

Science | Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 11:58:14 am PDT

Google is starting to roll out a new service based on “Grand Central,” a multi-phone/voicemail management business they recently acquired, with some very interesting features: Here comes Google Voice.

As you may know, GrandCentral offers many great features, including a single number to ring your home, work, and mobile phones, a central voicemail inbox that you could access on the web, and the ability to screen calls by listening in live as callers leave a voicemail. You’ll find these features, and more, in the Google Voice preview. Check out the features page for videos and more information on how these features work.

A review at CBS News by Larry Magid: Google Voice: Flawed But Still Great.

I was looking at this stuff last night; they have some pretty cool features available.

First thing that came to mind:

"single number to ring your home, work, and mobile phones, a central voicemail inbox that you could access on the web"

How are they going to keep out the spammers?

What? and decrease all of that potential revenue?

I don't think I would trust Google with any of my information, thank you.

6 Diamond Bullet  Fri, Mar 13, 2009 12:04:13pm

Will it let me call them directly and question their dubious branding initiatives that ignore Memorial Day in favor of, say, the 130th birthday of the founder of the Bauhaus school of design? 'cause I'd be down with that.

And, as a side note, I wouldn't trust them to keep anything related to this system confidential at all. Not your voicemails, not your calling numbers, not your contacts registry. We're talking about a company that drives up your driveway with a vehicle festooned with cameras, and then if they happen to film something "private" tell you it's your fault. Imagine if, say, the FBI did this -- there would be blood in the streets.

In summation, please go bankrupt.

7 avanti  Fri, Mar 13, 2009 12:04:44pm

Google will take over the planet some day. I can't keep up with all the Google stuff out there all ready. even the search engines has way more features then I know how to use.

8 democast  Fri, Mar 13, 2009 12:05:38pm

As one of the early adopters, two glaring problems are its inability to:
1) leave a listened message as 'new';
2) to skip over a new voicemail message to listen to a more important one.

Any arguments?

9 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Fri, Mar 13, 2009 12:05:44pm

I want to know why they aren't back proven ecologically sound communications networks like Aldis lamps.

I wonder if they will own the copyright to anything that is transmitted through this set up. Kinda like they tried to do with Chrome. The Donks in Congress would probably be cool with it unless they started harassing al Qaeda. Then Dick Durban (D - al Qaeda) would come down on them with both feet.

Voice-to-text technology must be fairly advanced now, as they are offering (free?) transcription service: ...it also takes voice messages that you can listen to on the web, from a phone or read thanks to a new feature that transcribes voice messages and sends them as email and text messages.

I think that's a scary step in the progression of surveillance technologies.

Obama's Poll Numbers Are Falling to Earth

It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama's high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced.

Polling data show that Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama's net presidential approval rating -- which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve -- is just six, his lowest rating to date.

Two comments from two very good people about Charles Freeman- his supporters and his anti Semitic rant.

THE SECOND disturbing development exposed by Freeman's appointment is the emergence of a very committed and powerful anti-Israel lobby in Washington. In the past, while anti-Israel politicians, policy-makers and opinion-shapers were accepted in Washington, they would not have felt comfortable brandishing their anti-Israel positions as a qualifying credential for high position. Freeman's appointment shows that this is no longer the case. Today in Washington, there are powerful circles of political players for whom a person's anti-Israel bona fides are his strongest suit.

This decline is more about the man's policies and objectives than his rhetoric.

A detailed examination of presidential popularity after 50 days on the job similarly demonstrates a substantial drop in presidential approval relative to other elected presidents in the 20th and 21st centuries. The reason for this decline most likely has to do with doubts about the administration's policies and their impact on peoples' lives.

There is also a clear sense in the polling that taxes will increase for all Americans because of the stimulus, notwithstanding what the president has said about taxes going down for 95% of Americans. Close to three-quarters expect that government spending will grow under this administration.

Recent Gallup data echo these concerns. That polling shows that there are deep-seated, underlying economic concerns. Eighty-three percent say they are worried that the steps Mr. Obama is taking to fix the economy may not work and the economy will get worse. Eighty-two percent say they are worried about the amount of money being added to the deficit. Seventy-eight percent are worried about inflation growing, and 69% say they are worried about the increasing role of the government in the U.S. economy.

Hate Jews
--with apologies to the Beatles

Hate Jews? Don't feel so bad
You can rationalize that you had better
Generalize, if one gets under your skin
Thus it begins, and it gets better

Hate Jews, don't be afraid
The oldest hatred is no dead letter
Find allies with just a wink and a grin
Then you begin to make it better.

And anytime you feel some pain, hate Jews again
Just lay all your ills upon their shoulders.
For well you know that it feels cool when once you're cruel
And after you first vent you can get bolder.

Hate Jews--it's going around
Forget that hatred is the worst fetter
Remember, let evil into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out, don't keep it in, hate Jews--begin
Accusing them of crimes contradictory
For don't you know it's not just you hates Jews--it's true
And with your allies you can dream of victory

Hate Jews? Don't feel so bad
You can rationalize that you had better
Generalize, if one gets under your skin
Thus it begins, and it gets better

Better better better better better better, ooooooh

Na na na na na ,na na na, hate Jews...

Long known as an advocate of a human rights policy towards the Chinese government and a supporter of its dissidents, Pelosi “was incensed about public remarks that Freeman once made that seemed to justify the violent 1989 Chinese government crackdown on democracy protesters at Tiananmen Square.” Not only that, the two journalists report, she “thought Freeman’s views were ‘indefensible’ and complained directly to President Obama about his selection.”

A new approach to eliminating your privacy- Google's real power is its metadata- what it knows about surfing habits and clicks, they cross correlate this with over the counter data about credit card use and geolocation data. Now they are going to assimilate ALL of your phone information, who you call and when. They will know everything about you. They will know things about you you didn't yourself.

Google famously says don't be evil. But what if they are evil? What if they do evil? What then? People thought Bill Gates was dangerous in the 90s. Bill is a piker compared to the golden children of Mountain View.

I have had personal dealings with Google where they have done things that I would be ashamed of (and yes I can prove it and I have witnesses and I would love to go into details but cannot at this time, so don't ask).

Do not give power over in your life with those who are not worthy of your trust.

The great truth of modern life is your government represents little threat to your freedom because they are incompetent at anything other than taxation. But Google is very competent. Whatever technical wonders they are able to develop are colored by the content of their character.

Amen, any time you hand over data to an organization, expect the organization to use it in its best interest which may not be in your best interest. Also assume that all sensitive information will be leaked to people who may use it against you. This latter statement is not paranoia, it is just reality. Maybe your information never leaks to the wrong person. But there is one way you can be sure of that, and that is to not give the information to begin with. In the security business there is what is called the "need to know" before you get access to something. Google has no "need to know" anything about me. My personal data will never be willingly given to them.

155 beck  Sat, Mar 14, 2009 9:27:47am

I'm not sure if this works for me because of issues with outgoing calls.

First, when I call someone the person sees my cell phone number or home phone number in their caller ID, not my Google Voice number, which leads them to call me back on my home phone or my cell phone, not my Google Voice number.

Second, the Google Voice features only work on incoming calls, not outoing calls, since outgoing calls bypass the service. For example, recording a phone call.

How does this work for families? If someone is calling your wife's or son's Google Voice number it will ring their cell phone and your home phone, but if you answer the home phone then the call does not get to the intended recipient. Wouldn't it be better to just call the person's cell phone? Shouldn't you just cancel our home phone service? The point of Google Voice is that you are calling a person, not a phone where you think the person might be, but I think you can accomplish that just by getting rid of your home phone service.
