The BBC still does documentaries like no one else. This special hosted by David Attenborough for the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday is beautifully produced and filmed, and actually informative as well. It’s posted in six parts at YouTube:
Comments do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.
One of the things I love about my trips to the UK is that this stuff is on tv all the time. Really cool documentaries about history, nature and science. All on regular prime time tv. Unthinkable here in America.

OK, it was beautifully filmed, educational and narrated superbly, but does the UK have Wife Swap?
I only knew about The Office, which is terrific in both the UK and US version. OK, I'll see their 'Wife Swap' and raise them 'Housewives of Atlanta'. How's that for quality US programming?
From wiki: Although Attenborough's documentaries have attained immense popularity in the United States, several have never been made available on DVD in NTSC format, most notably those that cast doubt upon conservative religious or political positions. These include:
Life on Earth, which examines the evidence for evolution.
State of the Planet
The Truth About Climate Change
I loved "Planet Earth" the hi-def eye candy from last year but I never heard of the others titles. Attenborough knows how to tell a story.
I think many of the DI shills have now given up here, realizing that the more they extend this debate the more foolish they look. They've now gone back to low profile, don't look behind the curtain mode.
Long ago, when evolution threads were few and far between, the ratio was completely reversed. I remember one thread where me and a now-disappeared commenter named "Thom" all by ourselves grappled with about 300 LGF creationists.
I was completely shocked like I had never been before. Because in "my world" I had never met a creationist, or anyone even resembling a creationist, and thought they were extinct. Thom and I were ganged up on for hours and hours.
It's the basic law of fundamentalist religion and faith. Global warmers will take a blizzard and turn it into undeniable proof that the Earth is warming, Creationists take mass extinctions, variation in species, fossils, aging methods, biology and observable micro-evolution and tell then interpret their "holy" book in a way that proves them right.
I knew a few creationists in college (I had a conservatory education) but I've come across very few of them in the real world. I was surprised how many were here.

I've met a few throughout my time in the military. One was one of the smartest people I ever met. Really nice guy too.
In his case though, he didn't push it onto others. Like the other creationists I've met.

There are still one or two hanging around who don't mind looking foolish:
When I was working for the cable co. in SF I as a favor to a friend who was a 7th day Adventist / Creationist I used to repair the sound system (and it was very impressive - any sound venue of the day would have been proud of it...) at a local church. Every time I came the pastor would come out a do a "Come to Jesus" speech on the stage and everyone would troop down, hoping I think that one day I would tag along I suppose. Instead I always smiled and waved, and then got back to work on the cables and mixers, which they would always get out of whack over a couple of weeks. They were kind hearted good people, but we certainly stayed away from all things to do with science when I visited.
I imagine that the great big stick in the sky has been invoked enough though that only the most diehard (and willing to at least be a little more polite) remain.
I think the general ID crowd has already decided we are all going to hell.

Rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints...

They've done their Christian duty, run into the room scream "REPENT OR BURN."
Hi! I'm just dropping in to see how everyone is, and to say how much I appreciate Sir Richard's nature documentaries. I watched Life on Earth four times, back when, and adored it. I learned huge amounts of things I never knew before, each time.
I'm having a glass of Castle Rock Pinot. It's quite soft and light.
Dinner tonight is: Salad, w/ vinaigrette. Tuscan style beefsteak (sauce is presently steaming gently over the lowest heat), accompanied by linguini in a cream sauce, topped with sun dried tomatoes, capers, and smoked salmon. Desert is a white cake/white chocolate/raspberry bar.
We're going heavy on carbs because one of our guests just buried her grandmother today.
Yeah, a lot of the YECs went nuclear over us calling out Stein for hypocrisy and idiotarianism. IIRC, there were a lot of bannings in that thread, and shortly thereafter.

Zombie, I carefully read your stance and why you chose to show this. You did the right thing for the right reasons - and I agree with you as to your basic stance.
That said,
WOW. I had no idea. I mean, where I grew up, something like that would lead to arrests and prison time (probably some rioting too).
I was impressed by blue lipped medieval warrior nun guy though.
Rural and somewhat poor county, from what I know. A general rule (intuiton, not knowledge) would be that the farther you get from suburban Richmond, (Henrico and Chesterfield), housing is less expensive but schools are not as good. But I've got no specific info. FBV might know.
How old are the kids?
Mr Bunglawala, who also briefed former Security Minister Tony McNulty on the threat posed by Islamic radicals in the UK, was arrested two weeks before Christmas last year.
How odd. I wonder why it took so long for this to come out? Very curious story.
In watching the amazing scientific works, the sacrifice, the thoughtfullness, the bravery Charles Darwin posessed I get sort of Angry when I read about the guy from Liberty University, teaching Biology of all things, corrupting young minds.
The creationists wanting to mandate their magic in the classrooms of states all across America.
Thanks, I can't tell you how cranky the DI crowd and apologist make me.
Ohhh, they bother me too. That said, as a person of faith, I can admit that there are those in all faiths, my own included, who are less than aware of commandments to love one's fellows. Everyone knows the difference between kind and not kind.
I grew up in the "Gold Buckle of the Bible Belt". Went to public schools. Never heard a word of creationism in a class, not a single word. That was 30 years ago. My kids haven't heard it either.
One off too college, so not an issue. The other is going into 6th grade, so middle and high is very important. I've found a few in Chesterfield I like. The one in Dinwiddie had a great barn and indoor riding ring, but I really need to have the schools up there. I'll be there next Saturday looking at houses, to make a final determination.

You think the Folsom Street Fair report was bad?
You halve no idea. People are simply too afraid to even mention my follow-up report, which really does make Folsom Street look like Sesame Street:

About an hour ago I let my dog out to do his biz.. After a while I went to let him in and he was gone..I found one of the 3 fence doors open in the back yard and totally freaked out.. I went running through the fields screaming for Winston..Nothing...He could be anywhere.. I came home with tears in my eyes..I lost my only pet dog in my life..And there was Winston laying on the front porch..I spanked his butt once and kissed him on the nose at the same time.. I think he thinks I'm totally stupid..
Dang dogs...Don't do this to me! It's like losing a kid in the Mall..total panic!

awww! Those dogs. Mr. Armywife keeps leave our gate open in the hopes the chihuahuas wander away. But they are afraid of the big bad world, so no dice!
And here lies the hypocrisy. Try doing any of these acts in any other city in America. The authorities would throw these people in jail for breaking the law.

Attenborough has been a great educator on the natural world and evolution for as long as I can remember. Richard Dawkins names him as one of the seven wonders of the world in this video, which is a pretty unusual honour for a mere presenter and narrator:
This is where I am in a difficult place to even express myself.
I strongly, even as a religious and observant person, believe that what consenting adults do privately is between them and G-d. I've gotten into some heated discussions with some more right-wing members of my synagogue over that view.
However, private is different from public. Where is there any sense of decency? If I went and did something with a woman like that publicly, we would (and should) be arrested. What is wrong with SF that this is even in the scope of acceptability?
While we are at it, what is wrong with the gay pride movement that thinks this could possibly help their cause? It is one thing to talk about one's private rights of romantic expression as a responsible person. It is another to claim that you have the right to force your sexuality into the view of others. It is nothing more than depravity to make such displays. The guy "relieving his excitement" out of his window was simply horrifying.

I have a whippet. They look like mini greyhounds. He runs over 30mph and as a sight hound, you just don't take him off leash.
Once, he slipped out of his leash on a walk and took off after squirell.
It took me six hours to find him. I love that dog like a son. I didn't know if I wanted to hug him or strangle him.
I'm checking out a bit, I re read the old thread and the arguments haven't changed much from the DI side since that seminal thread, while the ones against them now are sharpened to a laser focus.
All it took was a bit of digging on the DI and their motives.

I have a Jack Russell. All 12 pounds of her. Take here for walks in the National forests up north. She runs 3 miles for every one I walk, deer trails and all that, but if I whistle she is there in 10 seconds.

My other dog is a TR terrier, I like that better than rat terrier. I have no problem with come commands with either of them. The thing with sight hounds though, is that once that chase switch gets thrown in their heads, forget it. They are off and then they get lost.
Sorry to hear it. I thought you might have meant St. Petersburg, FL. My kids got a good schooling there, but they were both in magnet programs. Kind of schools within the schools.

Yeah. I've run into lost hunting dogs in the forest. They will follow you for miles, in car or on foot. The trick is to go past the campsite areas, then they decide to pick someone else; but a rat terrier is my dog's best friend up there. I can sit all day and just watch them play.
Just dropping by until the baby wakes up for a late feeding. Has anyone seen this about the Michelle Obama comic book?
Some jokes just write themselves.

Is there a way to post pics here? And if so, would it be kosher to put up a pic of my boys?
Mine is of the long leg variety. The little guy is frighteningly smart.
Yes, mine is not short-legged, but I have seen taller ones. I am trying to keep him from becoming fat as he enters late middle-life. Which is difficult with the two poodles in the house, since they ALWAYS prefer the other dog's food. ;)

Yeah, it's not that they like being lost, they just got all wound up and off they went. When my whippet got off leash that time I found him because I heard him whining.

It's in Virginia. From Albuquerque you can hardly tell the difference.
I've toured VA many times...it's a beautiful and historic state...I don't make excuses for the people or politics or the mess up north...VA has never let me down

I have the same issue with my terrier. I have to watch his diet like a hawk, and all 16 lbs of him, he will bully the whippet (35 lbs) if he is hungry enough. I have found that a mixture of raw diet, Royal Canin indoor small breed feed and a little nutro wet food do well to regulate him - this is not counting all dog taxes paid to both when cooking, but I keep that to a minimum. What do you feed yours?

He's on Eukanuba dry food, because I had to put the Nutro weight-loss stuff up. The poodle pup was eating it. And of course, the rat terrier was knocking the pup off his puppy food bowl. The other poodle is on the old "seafood" diet. ;)
Interesting to go through that thread and look at the dings. Hot topic indeed.
Hah. I got a -4 ding for #676 which said that Expelled fans were equivalent to Loose Change fans, and that creationism was the "same disease" as 9/11 trooferism.
Oh, and he gets no kitchen scraps within sight of the stove, refrigerator, or a plate. If he's out back, I will occasionally toss out some meat trimmings. I hate begging dogs, and this is the only way I have found to keep them off my plate.
But there is one issue that retains the power to leave Democrats quivering: gun rights. Gun issues still persistently tie the party in knots and have been used by Republicans to stall two major bills this year, with more likely to come.
[snip]
It is a particularly hot-button topic with veteran Congressional Democrats who believe the party’s strong support for a 1994 assault weapons ban was the real reason they lost control of the House that year — not the House bank scandal, the failed health care initiative, the Contract with America or Newt Gingrich.
The power of that bad memory was unmistakable a few weeks ago in the immediacy with which Speaker Nancy Pelosi shot down the suggestion by new Attorney General Eric Holder that Congress might reinstitute the assault weapons ban.
“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” said Ms. Pelosi, echoing the position often taken by advocates of gun rights.
[snip]
“The Second Amendment right is a long-standing pillar in our system of government, and I believe law-abiding citizens should have the right to defend their homes in the District of Columbia, just like they have the ability to do so in the First Congressional District of Mississippi,” said Mr. Childers, who persuaded 81 other Democrats to side with him.

We've now got Senator Jim Webb, Senator Mark Warner, and Governor Tim Kaine. All Dems. Warner on a good day is a reasonably smart man. The other two are worthless. And it may get worse. Terry McAuliffe is running for governor this year. With any luck the Republican (McDonnell) will win.

I made an appearance in a BBC documentary in 2006, that was to be a scientific documentary to accompany their Superstorm fictional drama. Superstorm was later on discovery channel too, but they dumbed down and totally sensationalized the "documentary" , taking the science and history out of it.

I understand that. I never, just give them their food. Always they must sit and wait - or do some other type of obedience. On the other hand, I confess that I am a little weak willed and the thought of not giving them some treats rarely computes with me.
Adorable! I'm having some technical difficulties with Picassa... but Jacks and RTs can look very similar. She remminds my of my little guy. Though he is reddish brindle with white flashes on belly, feet, nose and tail tip.

Well, Charles is right; the BBC does do documentaries like no one else. Maybe next trip the British Prime Minister can give the President a boxed set of BBC DVDs.

Lots of incredible places to go eat in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos.

It just might be more authentically Mexican in Virginia, actually. New Mexican cuisine is notably different from the tex/mex you get in other border states. Maybe because Hispanics in New Mexico tend to be lightly-Catholicised native Hopi or else actual Spaniards...

I was in Albuquerque years ago on business, and found I liked the food at the company cafeteria better than the hotel. They made the stuff at the hotel for tourists. We went to someplace else there, but this was around 24 years ago, so I don't remember where.

Silence, then "Crap. Y'all need bail money?"

I agree, although I think this should be for people like Madoff.
He works until he has paid off all he stole.
Somehow, I doubt he'll last that long.
I'm afraid we don't get much call for it round these parts.
That figures. Predictable really, I suppose. It was an act of purest optimism to have posed the question in the first place. Tell me: Have you in fact got any cheese here at all?

How about writing and enforcing existing laws. The money was given to these firms so that they could operate - and most importantly so that banks could get credit flowing. Diverting those funds away from those purposes is a breach of contract to say the least.
Unless of course there never was a contract and the people in DC made a deal with their financial backers - no that would never happen.

Gareth: I've got a new theory about marriage. Two people are in love, they live together, and then suddenly one day, they run out of conversation.
Charles: Uh-huh.
Gareth: Totally. I mean they can't think of a single thing to say to each other. That's it: panic! Then suddenly it-it occurs to the chap that there is a way out of the deadlock.
Charles: Which is?
Gareth: He'll ask her to marry him.
Charles: Brilliant! Brilliant!
Gareth: Suddenly they've got something to talk about for the rest of their lives.
Charles: Basically you're saying marriage is just a way of getting out of an embarrassing pause in conversation.
Gareth: The definitive icebreaker.

Charles, I want to thank you for continuing on in these discussions.
While I may not agree on every point, the discussions that we've had here about the origins of life have challenged my faith and renewed it, at the very same time.
I feel terribly sorry for the religious folk out there and in here who are so dogmatic in their faith and so secretly terrified that they might find something that contradicts their beliefs, that they won't even read posts like this one let alone watch the videos. It's easier for them to howl on whatever forum will allow it that you're being an anti-Christian hater, and dismiss every post on the topic, than it is for them to actually open up and expand their minds.
There is so much to be learned here, and it's beyond sad when people who have been given both a brain and the ability to reason and learn, refuse to do so out of fear.

This quote was in the middle of a spoken section of "The Mud Club" in which a dude walks into the club with a blue Mohawk and proceeds to "work the floor, work the wall, work the monitor system. . . ." The band was having monitor feedback problems at the Blossom concert, and there are numerous references to P.A. equipment throughout this ramble. Other than that, the quote is meaningless, I guess. But great imagery!
