Europe Suddenly Wary of Gitmo Detainees

The European countries who screamed the loudest for Guantanamo Bay to be closed are now hedging on accepting detainees for resettlement.

European countries that have offered to help the Obama administration close the detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, by resettling detainees have begun raising questions about the security risks and requirements if they accept prisoners described by the Bush administration as “the worst of the worst,” according to diplomats and other officials on both sides of the Atlantic.

The concerns, and a deep suspicion of whether the American intelligence community will share full information on the prisoners, are likely to complicate the resettlement effort, which is critical to President Barack Obama’s fulfilling his pledge to close Guantánamo within a year.

A senior State Department official conceded that there were some concerns in Europe about accepting Guantánamo detainees. But the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not designated to speak publicly on the issue, argued: "It is really just a small effort to help us deal with a legacy of the past. This is something we inherited, too."

Too bad they didn't inherit any humility, gonads or wisdom.

Someone recently wrote a letter to the White House complaining about the treatment of a captive taken during the Afghanistan war. Below is a copy of the response.

January 29, 2005
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Rothstein:

Thank you for your recent letter criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The administration takes these matters seriously, and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington. You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like you, we are creating the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short.

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we are placing one terrorist under your personal care. Your detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation to your residence next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of admonishment.

We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommended in your letter. Although Ahmed is sociopathic and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome this character flaw. Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences.

Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless you feel that this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with your wife or daughters since he views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him. He has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the dress code he considers appropriate, but I'm sure that over time they will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the bhurka. Just remind them that it is all part of respecting his culture and his religious beliefs.

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you inform us of the proper way to do our job. Take good care of Ahmed and good luck!

Cordially,

Donald Rumsfeld

De-plane!

Better idea. Just divert a C-5 that was heading to AMARC anyway and load them up with all of the detainees. Two man crew and for security reasons their names are classified. Then, in mid-flight have an "incident" occur after the crew "de-planes" and parachutes safely to an awaiting Navy squadron.

C-5 disappears. Gitmo detainee problem solved.

Something I learned while there, along with the appropriate hand gestures.

Which reminds me of one of the Italian gestures for "f*** off" - a friend showed it to me and then said that a more subtle way to "say it" is to rub your right forearm with your left hand and say "Let me show you where my grandfather keeps his umbrella."

Here is a picture of the gesture for anyone interested (which took forever to find).

For the most part since 1939. The Vichy even had the "gall" to fight us in North Africa at first. Thank goodness they were using "muskets and cannonballs." Then for the duration of the Cold War we stood guard and kept those fakers from being invaded by the Soviet Union. The only other nation in "Europe" that lifted much of a finger was the UK which for a long time didn't consider themselves Europe. Now look at how that country is being destroyed from within due to their pathological "multiculturalism" and immigration standards.

A French General said something like "you Americans, you are always out after territory and colonies and bases, are you not?" To which Powell said "America has had it's fine, brave young men defend many nations in many situations and all America has asked for in return was enough land to bury our dead."
I understand the French General immediately turned and left the room and some British Field Marshall turned to Powell and said "Well said. We (meaning the British) have always appreciated your help and you've always provided it for us in time of need. Thank you."

"Ah but it is like holding a sable brush to the canvas and painting with the oils! More French bread for us! More red wine! Merde! We have Sartre and a legacy of enslavement in Africa!"

I know. The French are actually one of the best "students" of leftist American cinema. What irony.

Oddly enough, it's the Belgians who seem to get some blow-back still for Congo. Everyone else has apparently been allowed to forget their African holdings.

I was in elementary and Junior high school in the 60's and we were taught (rightly) that America guards the free world. That was 40 years ago and it is 20 years past the time that these yutz's should spend their own money and resources defending themselves. The umbrella we have provided has led them to indolence and Socialism. Why? The US defends them so they can spend their time and Euro's on importing and harboring their enemies and they know if things get bad enough the US will pull their fat out of the fire. I say, no more.

True - true - true - the politics of the French and Europe leave much to be desired. The people are another matter. I have had nothing but good times with them back in the 60s - and 70s - from Turkey to Gibraltar - civillian and military. And in joint ops with the Unit Naval forces of Turkey, Greece, Spain and France were impressive. I am talking individuals vs. ships. Mostly EOD.

I have no experience with Europeans, except those who have sought refuge in America. It is unanimous: They come here for the America that we used to be. I envy you your experience and I wish I had served in the military. Thank you for doing it in my stead.

Yes. And oddly enough it was the cowboys that pulled the most weight. Even the highest brass in the US Armed Services had a little bit of cowboy in him. Yet now they STILL complain about our military and our cowboy way of being.

Now, I see the collapse of Europe coming from within through their own policies. It is a war without guns (as they seem to prefer) but one that they will and are losing.

There had just been a dust up in Ivory Coast, with the French behaving in the usual fashion - running from troops or simply staying well away from them, then firing at unarmed civilians - and it was on the news. I grew up surrounded by Russians. Now there's a selective history nightmare for you--talk to the average Russian about the Pacific during WWII and you get looked at as though you're discussing a Star Trek episode. Couple of weeks ago, I had a problem with my Comcast Internet. The tech was one of those bad cable guys. They have a problem with their front-line techs - about one in three is any use at all. He did nothing - looked around vaguely - didn't even test the cable or bring his tools in, then said the problem was "outside." He did show me how to jimmy a locked door.

After a few persuasive calls and escalations to supervisors, with my patented friendly social engineering, where I put my cute little foot down, his boss came by and fixed my cable. I needed a new box - they had a new one, which I didn't have, and the tech should have seen that. The supervisor went and got one for me, then connected it.

As we were finishing up, I asked him if he'd been in the military. You can just tell when they have been. He was a Marine. :D

The ultimate response to a Dear John letter...

You gotta love a man like this, Humor in the face of defeat.
A Marine was deployed to Afghanistan. While he was there he received a letter from his girlfriend. In the letter she explained that she had slept with two guys while he had been gone and she wanted to break up with him. AND, she wanted pictures of herself back.
So the Marine did what any squared-away Marine would do. He went around to his buddies and collected all the unwanted photos of women he could find. He then mailed about 25 pictures of women (with clothes and without) to his girlfriend with the following note:
"I don't remember which one you are. Please remove your picture and send the rest back."

266 Dustyvet  Mon, Mar 16, 2009 11:25:11pm

News Anchor Dan Rather, NPR Reporter Cokie Roberts and a U.S. Marine were hiking through the desert one day when they were captured by Iraqis. They were tied up, led to the village and brought before the leader. The leader said, "I am familiar with your western custom of granting the condemned a last wish. Before we kill and dismember you, do you have any last requests?" Dan Rather said, "Well, I'm a Texan; so I'd like one last bowl full of hot, spicy chili." The leader nodded to an underling who left and returned with the chili. Rather ate it all and said, "Now I can die content." Cokie Roberts said, "I'm a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what's about to happen. Maybe someday someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end." The leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder and Roberts dictated some comments. She then said, "Now I can die happy." The leader turned and said, "And now, Mr. U.S. Marine, what is your final wish?" "Kick me in the ass," said the Marine." "What?" asked the leader. "Will you mock us in your last hour?" "No, I'm not kidding. I want you to kick me in the ass," insisted the Marine. So the leader shoved him into the open, and kicked him in the ass. The Marine went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9mm pistol from inside his cammies, and shot the leader dead. In the resulting confusion, he leapt to his knapsack, pulled out his M4 carbine, and sprayed the Iraqis with gunfire. In a flash, the Iraqis wer! e dead or fleeing for their lives. As the Marine was untying Rather and Roberts, they asked him, "Why didn't you just shoot them? Why did you ask them to kick you in the ass?" "What!?" said the Marine, "And have you assholes call ME the aggressor?"

re: #263 SanFranciscoZionist

The crowd I've been seeing recently is pretty effing scary. I hate these people. I just hate them.

Weirdly enough, I don't have the same anger about actual Palestinians, no matter how terroristic, that I do about the little whiteboy helpers. Between me and the Palestinians, we know the deal, we know the score. There's land and water to fight over, and hasbarah to do.

The fucking Berkeley students playing at liberating the indigenous peoples are straight-up anti-Semites, and I hate them so much it makes me kind of maaaniiic.

Oh, absolutely.

If, hypothetically, I had the option of ridding the world of one evil, I would choose liberals over Arabs in a second.

Arabs are evil. Liberals perpetuate their evil and prevent good people from stopping them.

Would the be more of the street urchin or anarchist crowd? They were always around in numbers but from pictures I've seen that crowd has been growing in numbers. The other group was always the "leftist Comic Book Guy" types or the old hippies with off the wall signs usually pointing to something related to ANSWER communism. Half the time I'm wondering if they even care about Palestine or are just their to pimp off Communism, LLC.

The anti-Semites are there most of the time. They use the Palestine movement as a way to play a pro-active anti-Jewish role. It's almost like the enemy of my enemy again since leftists have almost nothing in common with Islam. Conspiracy theorists abound too with no shortage of conspiracies about the Bilderbergs, AIPAC, and the CFR. In the end it's almost like a collection of ideological pimps and whores.

It was a dark, stormy, night. The Marine was on his first assignment, and it was guard duty. A General stepped out taking his dog for a walk. The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a perfect
salute, and snapped out, "Sir, Good Evening, Sir!"

The General, out for some relaxation, returned the salute and said "Good evening soldier, nice night, isn't it?"

Well it wasn't a nice night, but the Private wasn't going to disagree with the General, so the he saluted again and replied, "Sir, Yes Sir!"

The General continued, "You know there's something about a stormy night that I find soothing, it's really relaxing. Don't you agree?"

The Private didn't agree, but then the private was just a private, and responded, "Sir, Yes Sir!"

The General, pointing at the dog, "This is a Golden Retriever, the best type of dog to train."

The Private glanced at the dog, saluted yet again, and said, "Sir, Yes Sir!"

The General continued "I got this dog for my wife."

The Private simply said, "Good trade, Sir!"

It's ANSWER's show, these days, everyone else is just a freak in the tent. They got a lot of control by organizing/monopolizing the anti-war protests in the city, starting from when we went into Afghanistan, and they have established themselves real good. They're basically hardcore International Marxist in flavor. I'm not sure how much that's registering with normal middle-of-the-road liberals in the area. Spring of 2003 I was hearing some complaints "I just want to show that I'm against sending troops to Iraq, and these communists and anarchists and nuts are all over the place, with these pre-fab signs, who are they?" Now, not so much.

They have been more physically aggressive of late. They use Jewish Voice For Peace as their anti-Zionist Jewish patsies, but can't work with any other Jewish groups. Back in 2003, they refused to let Michael Lerner speak at one of their rallies because he's a Zionist, and that basically set the tone.

They glom on to any local events that fit their purpose--the death of Oscar Grant was a classic recent example. They've shown no interest or ability in getting local politicians to come out for them. THank God.

I don't think they care much about Palestine, but they do hate Israel. They ring the classic changes--I've heard their speakers complain about how Palestinian women and LGBT folks are being persecuted by Israel. At a recent event, I heard a teenage girl, Palestinian-American, who'd been tapped as one of their speakers talk about how her cousins in Jordan don't understand the struggle, and 'my uncle doesn't even know who Che was'. It's a mush, but a mush that has something in it for everyone.

SocialistWorker.com turned out for that same event, with their signs. I don't know if they're a new ally, or just random.

The old hippies come of course. I find them almost charming.

I'm thinking about going back to grad school. Are there any degrees you can get in hating International ANSWER? I'd be good.

re: #244 Gus 802

True. I think that was sort of a tradition near the East Coast. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc. You're right. That is something we disregard or forget. Perhaps it's because the French complain so much that we bring up the former.

Savannah, Georgia, is where Pulaski was killed by British grapeshot. For many years there was a question about the disposition of his remains, with some claiming he had been buried at sea, (he had succumbed to his wounds aboard the brig Wasp) others that he had been buried on a nearby plantation and his remains later placed in a crypt in the memorial statue to him in Savannah in 1852. The remains were disinterred in 1996 and a search for surviving relatives in Poland commenced as DNA tests were done to prove they were indeed Pulaski's remains and that he had not been buried at sea.

Of course, French perfume. And, ok, croissants. And some French movies (Les Enfants du Paris, for one). And poodles.

(sigh)

once again the "staring us in the face" solution to this:

Stage 1: Dump the prisoners EXACTLY back where they were found

They can't have been the sharpest Jihadis in the mosque in the first place if they allowed themselves to get capture alive by the infidel kuffar.

Stage 2: Operate a strategy where NO PRISONERS ARE TAKEN in future.

This will, of course, mean that any suspect Jihadi assumes room temperature, but if the libs don't want Gitmo, it's the only viable solution.

Gitmo is the Waldorf-Astoria of prisons. Notice no concern over the squalid detention centers in the rest of the island of Cuba where the prisoners are not terrorists but bloggers and writers.

So, the Euros are saying that they put on self righteous airs and made false statements about the nature of the GITMO detainees to score political points with their public and with the leftwing media. Now that the Euros know that the people at GITMO aren't fit for anything other than indefinite detention, they are scuttling back into their ratholes and are doing their own impersonations of Emily Litella. The moral and political vacuity in Old Europe never ceases to amaze no matter how predictable.

291 P-DEX  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 8:19:10am

Not surprising the Euro's are saying this since they get most of their America-bashing marching orders from CNN International. (Watch it sometime...you'll see what I'm talking about). And, of course, in most of Lefty America's genetic predisposition for hand-wringing guilt when it comes to superpower status merely chimes in with them. But this is merely another reason why a politician (or anyone for that matter) should give two flying shits about what Europe thinks of America. And I don't. I would simply like them to say "thank you" to America once a day, every day, then go back to doing nothing while Islam slowly assimilates Western Europe.

292 classicLib  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 8:20:11am

Since the Dems politicized Gitmo since it's opening, isn't Obama technically inheriting this problem from himself? Gee, I hope all the short-term political gain was worth it, Dems.

re: #66 Desert Dog

Be careful, I can see a Murtha earmark popping up allocating some ungodly amount of money for his district so they can construct a money eating monstrosity to store all of the scumbags currently residing at Gitmo.

We should send Jimmah Cottah and Habitat for Humanity out to build a halfway house for them.

I suggest it be located at 1602 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC.

294 SFGoth  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 8:37:42am

Since last year, I've been making "mileage runs" to Munich every so often and when I do, I go to a particular goth club. Let me tell you, I've met a few people, one of whom is the DJ, who have told me that they are jealous that we in America are much freer than they are in Germany. One guy who told me worked for 9 mos at the S.Carolina BMW plant and the DJ himself is a reservist in the German army and has trained in San Luis Obispo. Europe has been, and appears to forever will be, a fascist, top-down continent. You can take Europe out of serfdom but you can't take serfdom out of Europe. You know what else? NOBODY has waxed gleeful to me over Obama.

295 baconeatingkaffir  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 1:38:52pm

Let me get thıs straıght... O'bummer's government wants to find a place for GITMO scumbags to live and get free socialist medical care while he axes veterans access to the secondrate VA. Please tell me this is a joke.
Its interesting how Islam hasn't been able to get a grip in Eastern Europe as much as it has in the west. Could it be theat people there have had enough of totalitarian dickwheasels telling them how to run their lives?

297 marsl  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 3:57:50pm

Ahhh... Gitmo detainees next to my door? Hell no!

Why don't you Americans learn with the Russians? Just shoot the damn jihadis, send them to Allah with the compliments of the U.S. Armed Forces and move on. There's more jihadis to send to Allah.

Detaining them was a huge mistake. Terrorists are not to be arrested, they are to be shot. Now, they have the sympathy of all commies in the Western Hemisphere.

298 marsl  Tue, Mar 17, 2009 4:00:04pm

As an European, I don't want terrorists at my door. But, those socialist idiots that are running Portugal volunteer to have them...

In these days, jihadis are more welcome in Europe than American troops...
