Another Secret Left-Wing List Surfaces

Politics • Views: 3,594

Politico’s Michael Calderone has an article about a secretive discussion list on which mainstream journalists, selected left-wing bloggers, and academics figure out talking points and coordinate strategies: JournoList: Inside the echo chamber.

For the past two years, several hundred left-leaning bloggers, political reporters, magazine writers, policy wonks and academics have talked stories and compared notes in an off-the-record online meeting space called JournoList.

Proof of a vast liberal media conspiracy? Not at all, says Ezra Klein, the 24-year-old American Prospect blogging wunderkind who formed JournoList in February 2007. “Basically,” he says, “it’s just a list where journalists and policy wonks can discuss issues freely.”

But some of the journalists who participate in the online discussion say — off the record, of course — that it has been a great help in their work. On the record, The New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin acknowledged that a Talk of the Town piece — he won’t say which one — got its start in part via a conversation on JournoList. And JLister Eric Alterman, The Nation writer and CUNY professor, said he’s seen discussions that start on the list seep into the world beyond. …

But beyond these specific examples, it’s hard to trace JList’s influence in the media, because so few JListers are willing to talk on the record about it.

POLITICO contacted nearly three dozen current JList members for this story. The majority either declined to comment or didn’t respond to interview requests — and then returned to JList to post items on why they wouldn’t be talking to POLITICO about what goes on there.

In an e-mail, Klein said he understands that the JList’s off-the-record rule “makes it seems secretive.”

This news isn’t a surprise; it’s a tactic the left/progressive wing has been using for quite a while. In 2006 a secret “talking points” email list for left-wing bloggers was revealed: Daily Kos: The Townhouse Affair.

As if anyone didn't already know this. On cue, every liberal pundit and blogger will at the exact same instant begin ranting about some tedious issue or other. They flog it incessantly, and then -- poof -- it's dropped for the next meme. An endless cycle.

Wearisome, predictable, and pitiful.

One byproduct of that secrecy: For all its high-profile membership — which includes Nobel Prize-winning columnist Paul Krugman; staffers from Newsweek, POLITICO, Huffington Post, The New Republic, The Nation and The New Yorker; policy wonks, academics and bloggers such as Klein and Matthew Yglesias — JList itself has received almost no attention from the media.

And Eric Alterman.

This Autumn I drove the McCain campaign around when they came to town. The Candidate was of course in the big car with the guns. I was driving a van with either staff, the hairdressers, or the press. I was driving when they all got a flash message to their BBerries from the DNC about why it was right for the Democrats to go after Joe the Plumber personally and why reporters should dig up Joe's personal records. The meme bounced around the van like a ping pong ball "Why of course we should." Took less than 30 seconds to settle the issue.

JCM. I might get dinged down for this, but I think you've hit the nail on the head as to why the GOP and conservatives have gotten their hands handed to them in the previous two elections cycles. The left is very succeptable to such "memo-of-the-day" thinking. Communist Russia was very very successful in pushing the mouthing of meaningless slogans until everybody knew the party line, even if everyone didn't believe it. Left-wing bloggers certainly know if they mouth the party line better than their rivals, they move towards being nomenklatura in the new regime, instead of better food and apartments, better access to an "elite" list of fellow liberals who they can rub e-elbows with. Its the Internet version of the Georgetown A-list.

Conservatives are at a double disadvantage in this respect. I remember meeting Matt Drudge at a party. I was having a good bs session with him until I made the mistake and brought up a rival conservative blogger and the conversation went south after that. Charles Johnson I'm sure doesn't like to talk about Michelle Malkin and vice versa.

Conservatives believe in individualism and competition. Liberals and leftists believe that nothing should get in the way of their power, so if that means collaborating with a rival, so be it.

To inject some history in this, well beofre there was a "FEMA" as we know it, during the 1927 flood of the Mississippi River, the federal government set up camps for the refugees. These were termed "concentration camps". They were temed that due to a concentration of people there. This, of course, was well before the term changed into a more sinister one.

Is there really no one in the media with enough personal integrity and public credibility to present this to the public through the main stream media? This is really sad. The media is worse than I could have ever imagined. They really have lost sight of the fact that this country could cease to exist in its present form if they don't do their jobs. The truth is needed to guide this country on the right course. Decisions are imperfect if not based on the truth. (See US presidential election 2008) One should not even have to say these things as they are so obvious.

Can't believe nobody beat me to that one. Probably because this thread is already dead, eh?

I'd kinda like to see those posts that prospective interviewees made about how they weren't going to respond.

And don't forget George Stephanopoulos was helping the Obama administration craft its message while still working at ABC News. Per the Media Research Center.

The MSM has become manipulated, managed, controlled and soon to be totally owned by the state and Comrade Obambi...the first target for change to socialism in America is the control of the media. The Obamatrons are farther along in this mission than we might think. They continue to assault any and all dissent from non-mainstream medias with their euphonious Fairness Doctrine rhetoric. More and more ways surface to skin the 'conservative medias' cat. The Obamaniacs will obliterate the First Amendment in the process and the angry liberal mob will cheer them on.

Heh. A group of like-minded people form what's essentially a mailing list to coordinate their message and compare notes. What a shock. Of course, that it's mostly the media who are on it, and that it's apparently an echo-chamber for whatever reality-impaired nonsense the lefties need to push that day does make it a bit suspect. I mean, aren't the media supposed to be the *watchdogs* against this sort of thing? Ah well. At least we can count on Global Warming to wipe us all out and end the misery.

Oh wait . . .
