Obama: Lost Without His Script

Politics • Views: 3,333

During an address with the Prime Minister of Ireland yesterday, Barack Obama ended up thanking himself.

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was just a few paragraphs into an address in Washington when he realised it all sounded a bit too familiar.

It was. He was repeating the speech President Barack Obama had just read from the same teleprompter.

Mr Cowen stopped, turned to the president and said: “That’s your speech.”

A laughing Mr Obama returned to the podium to take over but it seems the script had finally been switched and the US president ended up thanking himself for inviting everyone to the party.

That gaffe made it into the TIMES/London:
Irish PM Brian Cowen left red faced after delivering Obama speech at White House

Well, in the first place, the Irish PM really ought not to ahve brought all this greenery, a.k.a Shamrocks, as a gift for PB0, that was asking for it!
:-)

And secondly, seeing it was St Patrick's Day - my bet is that some Leprechauns were having jolly good fun with that teleprompter, stuff like that is jsut what they love doing!
:-)

On a more serious note - thats the third gaffe in succession by the White House, when dealing with foreign countries.

I don't mind presidents looking down and reading from a prepared speech -they have all done it and I would not expect them to memorize them. The teleprompter as a device is fine, too. Bush used one, so did presidents before him. But it is the complete and utter reliance on the thing that is an embarrassment. If you can't think on your feet enough to thank a foreign dignitary or say a few cliched words to the American people or (GASP) talk to the press without it you are nothing but a hack.

They could go 8 hours a day, explaining why FCBBHO is ruining this country, and how conservative ideas will improve things.

New legislation introduced this morning - the Congenital Heart Futures Act.
The Act creates a national registry of those of us with a heart defect, supports and funds research, and supports and funds an educational program. Total cost: Estimated $16 million per year, according to the estimate I heard while in DC this February.

The bill was introduced in both the House and the Senate and has bipartisan support. One of the Senate sponsors is Dick Durbin (!) who had a daughter to pass away from a heart defect earlier this year.

I know Durbin is not an LGF favorite, but if you could overlook that long enough to support the Congenital Heart Futures Act, it would be very much appreciated!

I'm waiting for the day when some disillusioned staffer who knows they are going to get the can for some other thing writes something really crazed on the prompter and he reads it. I'm just waiting.
Can you IMAGINE the snark storm these kinds of things would have started were it President Bush?

I sent a personal handwritten note to the British MP by the way. An abject apology for our 'head of state'.

Sigh.

Too many of the people who voted for him did so based on his skin color ratherthan his resume.

Hard to vote for a resume when all he has accomplished is shaking down companies for cash and endlessly running political campaigns for higher office.

321 Land Shark  Wed, Mar 18, 2009 10:07:35am

The Teleprompter Presidency seems to be an emerging theme. I laugh when I hear people carry on about how articulate Obama is. Don't you mean his teleprompter is articulate?

I shudder to think about this idiot in a closed door meeting with Russia's Putin. The Russians hack The Big Zero's teleprompter. Before you know it, Obama agrees to scrap the US Armed Forces and gives Alaska back to the Russians in exchange for some nesting dolls. (sarcasm)

322 Lizard by the Bay  Wed, Mar 18, 2009 10:09:52am

Obama is exactly what Dems in 1980 claimed Ronald Reagan would be: The "Actor" President who was lost without his script.

I guess all of Obama's self-comparisons to Reagan make sense after all. Obama is modeling himself after the left's perception of Ronaldus.

Read to the bottom of the article...
Obama also called the Irish a bunch of drunks...

"Mr Obama joked about the free-flowing bar and warned his guests not to wear lampshades on their heads in front of the cameras."

So, has anyone checked? Are the Irish rioting in the streets and looting electronics stores?

Are there any countries that he has NOT insulted yet?

Your sensitivities are showing, Mr. Sandman. "...than how this article trumps it up."? Apparently you are completely ignorant of Obama's track record of teleprompter flubs, his mental miscues and of his obvious lack of oratory skills without his teleprompter.

Anyone can be a great orator by reading a script - truly great orators are those who don't need one.

As I was reading through this thread I remembered that Reagan got a lot of grief for using the teleprompter, seems he was the first president to use one. Thing is, Reagan didn't use the teleprompter all the time and could ad lib, he was capable of introducing his nominees and visiting dignitary's without help. Comedians supposedly have been waiting for Obama to do something they can make fun of...we'll see if they were serious about that. I won't hold my breathe.

335 Ceemack  Wed, Mar 18, 2009 12:02:10pm

WASHINGTON (AP) - White House officials confirmed today that Secret Service agents narrowly averted an attempt to assassinate President Barack Obama's teleprompter.

Details remain sketchy at this time, but the White House stressed that the teleprompter sustained no damage and at no time was in imminent physical danger. "We caught him before he was actually able to get in the room with the President's teleprompter," said a source within the Secret Service.

The teleprompter is reportedly resting comfortably in the residence and is apparently unphased by its brush with destruction.

Had the President's teleprompter actually been destroyed or rendered incapacitated, Vice President Joe Biden's teleprompter would have assumed responsibility as the President's teleprompter. Had the Vice President's teleprompter also been assassinated, the teleprompter used by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would have been elevated to the White House.

"And God knows what would come up on those two," said a Capitol Hill source who did not wish to be identified.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. From a Seinfeld episode when Jerry was "outed" even though he was never gay. He would end every comment about not being gay with "not that there's anything wrong with that", to prove he wasn't homophobic.

Unless I'm misremembering, not only was the non-gay Jerry incorrectly "outed", but he was linked romantically with the also-not-gay George -- so they both ended up saying "NTTAWWT" throughout the episode.

Dating myself as a Child of the 1980s, Reagan was that generation's Optimus Prime of Presidents.

Then we would have President Biden. Sad to say it appears it might be an upgrade, but not much.

I'm thinking:

"I've decided to have the Justice Department investigate and prosecute all illegal activity by the ACORN organization and if I go back on this promise then I will give back every dime I pocketed from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."

Let's see what kind of convo that starts, shall we? ;D

Barack Obama ended up thanking himself.

He does that a lot ...

As the half-dozen senators -- including John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) -- headed to announce their plan, they met Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who made a request common when Capitol Hill news conferences are in the offing: "Hey, guys, can I come along?" And when Obama went before the microphones, he was generous with his list of senators to congratulate -- a list that included himself.

"I want to cite Lindsey Graham, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, myself...

re: #1 Bloodnok

Thanks, Bloodnok for making a thread out of this!

Yet again, Mr. T demonstrates that he is actually an idiot or as Dick Morris said, "maybe stupid." President Teleprompter time and time again is incapable of forming his own thoughts or opinions to a degree never seen with a sitting president. When he absolutely has to think on his feet the stammering, umms, ahhs, uhhhhs commence instantly and with great frequency. Obambi doesn't know what he knows and regularly shows what comes from his mouth does not come from his mother board. To add insult to injury he is not even aware of what he is reading in a cognitive sense.
If we believe he actually wrote the books that he has had published, we are idiots, too. No way! Mr. T is a stumbling, bumbling empty suit perpetually immersed in a teleprompter with ample room for panoramic view between his ears.
