A paratrooper on his first jump was given the following instructions: Jump from the plane and yell "Airborne!" Count to three and your chute will open.
If main shoot doesn't open, pull the reserve ripcord. When you get down on the ground, a truck will pick you up and take you back to the base.
The paratrooper jumped and yelled, "Airborne!" He counted to three and nothing happened.
He then frantically pulled the reserve cord. Nothing happened.
Then the paratrooper said to himself, "Damn, with my luck the truck won't be there to pick me up either!"

White House objects to UN calling US 'deadbeat'
The White House objected Thursday to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's description of the United States as a "deadbeat" donor to the world body.
Ban used the phrase Wednesday during a private meeting with lawmakers at the Capitol, one day after he met with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office.
The United States pays 22 percent of the organization's nearly $5 billion operating budget but is perennially late paying its dues.
U.N. Official Accuses U.S. of Demonizing Ahmadinejad
"I don't think anyone can doubt that in our part of the world ... (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad has been demonized," he said. "The United States has been in the business of the demonization of people forever and the canonization of the worst of dictators."
Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, a Roman Catholic priest from Nicaragua with openly leftist views, also reiterated that the more he thinks about the conditions that Israel imposes on the Palestinians, the more he tends "to think about apartheid."
Miguel must be on Jimmy Carter's email list.

East Bridgewater (Massachusetts) Savings Bank.
Bad or delinquent loans?
Zero.
Foreclosures?
None.
Money set aside in 2008 for anticipated loan losses?
Nothing.
The bank even squeaked out a profit of $87,000. And its Tier 1 risk-based capital ratio was 31.6 percent, or more than three times higher than many community banks in Massachusetts.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. recently slapped East Bridgewater Savings with a rare “needs to improve” rating after evaluating the bank under the Community Reinvestment Act.
So thanks to Barney, this bank that needs no bailout is now getting pushed to make some of the same kinds of loans that got us in the meltdown in the first place.

Even though the Democrats in Congress -

(3) have actually placed into law measures to protect AIG bonuses
(4) receive all sorts of pork and perks, including cushy loan deals like the one Chris Dodd created with Countrywide, and
(5) architected the financial collapse of mortgages through the Community Reinvestment Act and foiled reform at FNMA
We must remember that, so far, none of them have been caught sending lurid messages to same sex congressional aides nor have any gotten caught in any airport bathroom sex stings.
So they, the Democrats, are clearly not guilty of any "culture of corruption" that the eeeeevil Republicans are.

President Barack Obama's supporters will knock on doors this week to build public support for his record $3.55 trillion budget, in the first test of a grassroots group built from his army of campaign volunteers.
In an e-mail message on Monday, a former Obama campaign official asked volunteers to gather signatures from neighbors who support the budget and to tell their congressional representatives to pass it.

And if you bothered to read the whole thread (as I have) you would find multiple links demonstrating that, as of 2 dyas ago, Obama was supporting the plan. Explicitly.

U.S. Muslim Coalition Considers Suspending Relations With FBI
A coalition* of major national Islamic organizations today announced that it is considering suspending outreach relations with the FBI, citing recent incidents in which American mosques and Muslim groups have been targeted.
....
The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) wrote in a recent statement, headlined "FBI Losing Partnership with American Muslim Community" - "Trust is the cornerstone of any partnership between law enforcement and communities. It can only be established and maintained through clear and open communication. Without this, trust is eroded and suspicions arise on all sides. This clearly does not serve anyone's interests... It is now up to the FBI and law enforcement agencies to re-engage with the Muslim American community, and re-build trust and respect."

Video: Jon Stewart rips Obama on wounded-vet policy
STEWART: You know the veterans? The men and women who risk their lives defending our country? They’re about yay tall, wear green… sometimes tan. They’re this brave. Well, when they get injured, you know who foots the bill? You. The taxpayer. It’s incredibly… fair.
That’s why it struck me as a little odd when I read that one of the money saving proposals from the Obama administration was to remove veterans with private insurance plans from the V.A. rolls. So I guess what the government is saying is that if you still need a little rehab after you got that leg blown off in Iraq, the government will cover you! Unless your wife as a little COBRA left over from her substitute teaching gig. In that case, you’re going to have to go with her and the whole deductible thing. Unless, of course, your spouse is in Congress, and then you can get their sweet, sweet government plan.
I’ve got some other ideas they might want to try out to save a little money in the military. How about sponsored commendations? For your service, I offer you the Frito Lay Medal of Honor. Here’s another one… how about actual Navy seals? [A picture is shown of a Sea World seal with a sailor hat on.] People would totally pay to see that! Or how about the Arlington National Cemetery and Water Park?
WHAT THE F*&K ARE YOU GUYS THINKING!? Veterans having to use their private insurance to pay for their combat related injuries? THAT CAN’T BE RIGHT.

Missouri Officials Target Rightwingers & Pro-Lifers For Terrorism
Missouri police officers were given instructions to target Christians, pro-lifers, Ron Paulians, pro-Gun activists, etc. as potential terrorists.
Timothy Birdnow at The American Thinker reported on this disturbing offical police document:
The Missouri Information Analysis Center (a division of the state police) has compiled an enemies list of warning signs for state police officers, signs that are supposed to help them determine potential terrorists. Such signs include Ron Paul bumper stickers, or "Right to Carry" handgun stickers (I have to wonder: does it include Support Your Local Police stickers, too?) and our friendly state troopers are warned to proceed with extreme caution against such radicals.Don`t believe me? See for yourself. (pdf)
Who is being targeted in this report? The state police are warned that Christians, "sovereign citizens", those opposed to abortion, tax revisionists, and anti-illegal immigrant advocates are potential would-be terrorists.

re: #386 buzzsawmonkey
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."--Rudyard Kipling, The Gods of the Copybook Headings
Read the whole thing.
Excerpted from "Francisco's Money Speech":
"Then you will see the rise of the men of the double standard--the men who live by force, yet count on those who live by trade to create the value of their looted money--the men who are the hitchhikers of virtue. In a moral society, these are the criminals, and the statutes are written to protect you against them. But when a society establishes criminals-by-right and looters-by-law--men who use force to seize the wealth of disarmed victims--then money becomes its creators' avenger. Such looters believe it safe to rob defenseless men, once they've passed a law to disarm them. But their loot becomes the magnet for other looters, who get it from them as they got it. Then the race goes, not to the ablest at production, but to those most ruthless at brutality. When force is the standard, the murderer wins over the pickpocket. And then that society vanishes, in a spread of ruins and slaughter.
"Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society's virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion--when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing--when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors--when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you--when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice--you may know that your society is doomed. Money is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.
"Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying money, for money is men's protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize gold and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of paper. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it bounces, marked, 'Account overdrawn.'
"When you have made evil the means of survival, do not expect men to remain good. Do not expect them to stay moral and lose their lives for the purpose of becoming the fodder of the immoral. Do not expect them to produce, when production is punished and looting rewarded. Do not ask, 'Who is destroying the world? You are.

If Obama were taking a similar amount of time to mull over a plan to lower the unemployment rate by re-introducing slavery, would be similarly blasé?
Ever noticed how pro-illegal-immigration supporters use the same arguments against a secure border that pro-slavery proponents used against emancipation? "We depend on their (virtually) free labor! Our economy will not survive! The slaves undocumented workers are better off now than they would be under your plan!" etc...

re: #421 Iron Fist
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is Soju?
Korean booze, closest thing to Cambodia I could think of.
Most brands of modern soju are made in South Korea. Though traditionally made from rice, most major brands supplement or even replace the rice with other starches such as potato, wheat, barley, sweet potato, or tapioca (called dangmil in Korean). Soju is clear in color and typically varies in alcohol content from about 20% to about 45% alcohol by volume (ABV), with 20% ABV being most common. Its taste is comparable to vodka, though often slightly sweeter because of the sugars added in the manufacturing process.
We were warned not to drink it when I was in Korea since the locals would cut it with wood alcohol and you could go blind drinking the stuff.

I'll meet you half way, if he pushes the plan as suggested, I'll agree that he's dead wrong and leave anyway, having lost what little faith I had in politicians. But no one ever suggested vets pay for their own treatment. Trying to suggest that private insurance could or would pay, is silly enough. I opposed a similar plan submitted several times since the Clinton administration, just as I do this one.
Private insurance (Blue Cross, Blue Shield, AIG, Aflac.........) cost both employees and employers. When insurance is 'paid for' by the company, that is approx $500. per month per full time employ depending on the employee's age and health record and size of the company. Since I work for a small business with under 50 employees, with health, drug, and dental benefits, 500 per month per employee is just slightly off (it was 489 last time I looked) So take 500/month and multiply it by 25 and the company is paying $12,500 into HEALTH insurance. 12,500/month = $150,000 per year.
thats 150,000 that comes out of the company coffers and not into the employees' immediate hands.

Missouri Officials Target Rightwingers & Pro-Lifers For Terrorism
Missouri police officers were given instructions to target Christians, pro-lifers, Ron Paulians, pro-Gun activists, etc. as potential terrorists.
Timothy Birdnow at The American Thinker reported on this disturbing offical police document:Who is being targeted in this report? The state police are warned that Christians, "sovereign citizens", those opposed to abortion, tax revisionists, and anti-illegal immigrant advocates are potential would-be terrorists.
The only thing I can think (other than thoughts that would get me deleted) is that I hope that we can still rely on the basic decency and common sense of the police, who no doubt carry some of those same beliefs.

AN IRISH BLONDE IN A CASINO
An attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland arrived at the casino. She
seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty-thousand Euros on a
single roll of the dice.
She said, 'I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm
completely nude'.
With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with
an Irish brogue yelled, 'Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!'
As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and
squealed...'YES! YES! I WON, I WON!'
She hugged each of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and
her clothes and quickly departed.
The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them
asked, 'What did she roll?'
The other answered, 'I don't know - I thought you were watching.'
MORAL OF THE STORY -
Not all Irish are drunks,
not all blondes are dumb,
but all men...are men.

I'm glad the government might be turning the economy around. If the market goes up, consumer confidence goes up, folks spend money, pay more taxes, and off we go.
The economy might be taking off on its own without any government action in fits and starts. The DJIA has been bouncing all over the place and it might be in the midst of a bear market rally that doesn't signify any signficant changes to the economy. There are a few things that show that Obama's economic policies are independent of reality though: housing starts are independent of anything Obama has done.
It's a function of pent up demand for housing in some areas of the country (the real estate mess is highly specific to certain parts of the country - concentrated in four states CA, NV, FL, and AZ and only certain counties therein). It's a function of the Fed keeping interest rates insanely low to prime the economy and get money out there.
So are the unemployment figures that came in better than expected. The porkfest has barely been implemented and has done absolutely nothing to produce a single job (just ask Catepillar that laid off 2,000+ jobs).
Companies are still laying people off, but some might be reconsidering because the local situation or sector has improved somewhat.

damn, i was trying to remember COBRA name and couldn't come up with it. I'd work for a couple thou less a year if it came with a cobra plan like my dad's was. 80/20 with a 500.00 FAMILY deductible (and how fast was that family deductible used up with 8 kids?)
COBRA entitles you to stay on your employer's health plan for up to 18 months but you have to pay the full price. As a matter of fact, you can pay up to 102% to your previous employer. The 2% is to cover their administration costs for collecting the money.

That's why German Fascism was called National Socialism. Because you can't be a fascist at the same time as you are a socialist.
(So do they actually let this bright boy out to walk the streets unsupervised? Sounds like an excellent way for all kinds of mischief to happen...)

Indeed - and not just in the USA.
Here, the neostalinist NuLab atrocity under Gord is doing this:

There will be nothing doing by this government - not even a church service. and they say the don't ahve the £500 000 pound to pay for the vets who want to go.
The French are doing more than we do!
And yes, lots of your vest will be there, and lots of canadians - but no Brits.
Oh - and the Queen? the government isn't doing anything to get her the official invitation she needs.
I think she may well do something off her own bat - she loves the vets.
Disgrace isn't even beginning to describe it.

Absolutely.
The problem is everything Obama is proposing has been tried before and FAILED.
Obama is pointed ignoring what has been tired and what works.
Why should a support a policy that historical has failed again and again, the reason's for those failures can be documented? Why should I hope, that something that's never worked will work this time because Obama is trying it?

re: #534 Iron Fist
That was my point. Socialism and fascism are really just different names for essentially the same political system. The same goes for Communism. The Bolsheviks called their form of Communism "Scientific Socialism". Hitler called his form of fascism "National Socialism" (to be fair, Hitler didn't even make up the term, but I can't remember the name of the guy that did). And Fascist Italy's Fascism came out of their Socialist party. They were all just different names for very similar Totalitarian ideologies. At times they were enemies (Hitler and the Nazis had an anti-Comintern pact with Italy), at other times "friends" (Molotov joked about the USSR joining the anti-Comintern Pact when the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was signed), and finally enemies again.
They all wanted to rule the World. Mussolini was probably the least odious of the lot, and it is Mussolini that Obama reminds me of. Has reminded me of since he first began exploring the run for the Presidency.
What all these systems have in common is the all powerful State, regardless of whether they were right or left leaning. It is the State that has the power to enslave and kill its citizens.

Under the stimulus bill, if you were laid off sometime in September, you only have to pay 35%. The company pays the other 65%, and then gets a credit against its payroll taxes for the quarter.
Nice way to screw companies. Front the money for the government. And if the payroll taxes don't cover it, there is a way to get paid, but they haven't figured it out yet.

The 5 biggest myths about Obama
1. Obama is bold. Actually, he is overly cautious. It’s no coincidence the first bills he signed into law were the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, two populist favorites. Signing these bills was not an act of courage any more than attacking lobbyists or selecting Joe Biden as a running mate. In fact, Obama’s entire agenda is cautious (sometimes to a fault, in the case of his housing and banking bailouts). Are the numbers in his proposed budget eye-popping? Yes. But eye-popping budgets are well within the Democratic mainstream now.
2. Obama is a great communicator. Cut away the soaring rhetoric in his speeches, and the resulting policy statements are often vague, lawyerly and confusing. He is not plain-spoken: He parses his language so much that a casual listener will miss important caveats. That’s in part why he uses teleprompters for routine policy statements: He chooses his words carefully, relying heavily on ill-defined terms like “deficit reduction” (which means tax increases, rather than actual “savings”) and “combat troops” (as opposed to “all troops in harm’s way”).
3. Obamaland is a team of rivals. Obama earned the label “No-Drama Obama” for a reason. His closest advisers — those who actually shape his thinking, strategy and policies — are loyal and, by all accounts, like-minded. Obviously, they regularly disagree with each other, as any group of smart individuals does. But reading the (many) profiles of Obama aides written since the election, it’s striking that there are no anecdotes of serious disputes inside Obamaland. Obama does try to bring political foes into the fold when it’s convenient, but his team is primarily made up of political friends.
4. Obama is smooth. Despite being deliberate, Obama is surprisingly gaffe-prone. Reporters on my e-mail lists last year know he consistently mispronounced, misnamed or altogether forgot where he was. (In one typical gaffe in Sioux Falls, S.D., he started his speech with an enthusiastic “Thank you, Sioux City!”) His geographic gaffes are not just at routine rallies but at major events, including the Democratic National Convention and his first address to Congress. Any politician occasionally misspeaks, but the frequency of Obama’s flubs is notable.
5. Obama has a good relationship with the media. Working with the hundreds of reporters who covered the Obama campaign last year, I was struck by how many of them would quietly complain about Obama’s borderline disdain for the press. Sometimes it is readily visible — like when he scolded a reporter for asking a question during a presidential visit to the White House briefing room. Other times it’s more passive, like long gaps between press conferences, or it’s reflected in his staff’s attitude.
