Looks like it's finally time to trade in my brick.

But does it offer a teleprompter feature? /

What do you have against Blackberry users?

//Actually, an iPhone would be cool to own, but I doubt I could afford the cost. :-(

Long time since I've seen one of those.

One day, when I am not constantly jumping in and out of trucks and delivery vans, I will get one of those thingys. Until then, I gotta stick with my Blackberry. My wife has a touch screen phone, I know I would break that thing in about 10 minutes.

That's all fine and great that Apple is working on new features for a popular platform, but when are they going to soup up some of their old products?

Like will Apple Quicktime player ever have a "always on top" option? Geez, you'd think that would be standard option on a media player... I mean Windows Media Player has it. So does RealPlayer.

BTW, does 3.0 apply to the Ipod Touch as well?

I don't think cell phone networks support the old analog phones.

maybe i'm just a stick in the mud, but all i want from my phone is the ability to send and receive calls.

i'm not texting anyone, because it takes longer to do that than it does to dial the number and talk, plus that way the recipient gets tone, inflection, etc, to carry my true intent.

i don't need a camera nor am i going to watch any movie, video or anything else on a tiny screen with my eyes.

i don't want it to fold open, slide apart or anything else that makes it more delicate that it needs to be. i want something that can withstand the vicissitudes of life without failing the first time it takes a tumble, so touch screens are right out too. and the whole package has to be designed for someone like me with normal sized fingers, not have 100's of tiny buttons so close together i heed a tool to make sure i hit the right one by itself, not it and all it's neighbors.

IOW, i want a hand sized wireless TA-312. %-)

Of all the features in iPhone 3.0, I think far and away the most important one is "push notification" -- and yet it's not getting much mention in the press. Seems to me that this could be a real "game-changing" new functionality. Basically, it expands the concept of "the phone call" to any and all sorts of life situations. The "push notification" feature allows any application (and there are jillions of applications) to send you a notification, in the form of a buzz or a ring, even if that application "isn't running" or if your phone is in passive mode. So basically, the iPhone can (and will) become a completely interactive life device.

For example, a glucose monitor worn by diabetics can send (via bluetooth) a "push notification" signal to the iPhone, with the message, "Your blood sugar is at such-and-such levels; take your insulin within 15 minutes" or whatever. Stock market apps can notify you when certain stocks hit certain levels, so you know when to sell of buy. A GPS device on a toddler can "push notification" you when the toddler moves a certain distance away from you; mapping/Twitter/GPS apps can notify you of house parties happening in buildings you pass as you walk along; etc., etc. The possibilities are endless.

I'm with ya, on that point. Even though I personally have an iPhone, I have taken advantage of very few of its features. I just don't have time to fiddle with technology. I'm just pointing out how, out there in the real world, the iPhone 3.0 will be an amazing device for all those people who do want more than just a phone and who like fiddling with technology.

re: #9 oh_dude

Yes. But I think they're going to charge $9.95 to pre-existing old iPod Touch owners. 3.0 is free to all iPhone owners, though.

re: #14 zombie

Thanx. I know all the hoopla follows the iPhone, but people forget that the iPhone and Touch are basically running the same OS.

I have a Touch 2G and I love it. It's an iPhone without the monthly bill.

South Park on Obama, Pop Culture Shift?

That's pretty tame stuff by South Park standards. And remember, Parker and Stone have always been irreverantly anti-PC.

Now, about that iPhone business; my biggest disappointment is that they still (apparently) will not be able to link to a Bluetooth keyboard. Hell, I'd be fine with just a good ol' plug-in keyboard. Nokia has this nifty little folding keyboard for their smart phone. Why can't we?

As an avid iPhone/Apple fanboy I anxiously await 3.0 and it's many new features (several that SHOULD have been included in the very first version)...
We still won't have the alleged "battery killing" mobile flash, but I welcome basic features like "cut and paste", "MMS", "landscape mode for Mail and most keyboard-centric apps (which most all other smart phones have included for quite some time) and of course as Zombie already mentioned "push notification".
Also I am excited about the rumors about a new much more powerful "multi-core processor" iPhone coming in June along with the possibility of an Apple "NetBook/Tablet" finally coming to market...

Charles, did you purposefully use my favorite oxmoron, the 'detailed summary'? Love it!

They've literally upped the ante for developers. Before 3.0, you could
develop your app for free (although you had to pay to deploy it to
physical hardware).
Now, to get the 3.0 SDK, you pay at least 99 bucks. At least you can kill
both birds with the same 99 dollars stone, if you don't have a 2.2.1 app
in the store yet.
