Nah. It's not enough to affect the climate one way or the other. To do that, you need an explosion at least as large as Pinatubo in 1992. To affect cliamte for at least a year, one as big as Tambora in 1815 will suffice. If you really want to fuck up the climate for a while, you'd need a Toba or Yellowstone type eruption.

They also had no idea that the entire north side of Mt St Helens was going to go in 1980. It was thought, at the time, that the volcano's eruption would go straight up.

I remember that all too clearly. The officials had drawn red and yellow zones around the mountain to keep out people, and had depressed both zones closer to the north side. The north side was visibly bulging and they still assumed nothing was wrong. David Johnston was the lone dissenting voice.

Past studies have shown that individual volcanic volcanos in the historical record (Krakatoa, and Mount Tambora, etc.) put more "pollution" and particulates in the atmosphere than all human activity combined throughout all of history. And that this pollution actually caused global cooling -- as a brand-new study confirms.

I remember a similar study after Mt Pinatubo (sp?) erupted in the Phillippines. The amount of pollutants was an astronomical amount and the studies indicated that it was more than human activity had emitted since the start of the industrial revolution. And this happened before Gore started all this GW bullshit.

By clearing up pollution we might actually cause a rise in temperature.

Global Dimming.

Global dimming is the gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth's surface that was observed for several decades after the start of systematic measurements in the 1950s. The effect varies by location, but worldwide it has been estimated to be of the order of a 4% reduction over the three decades from 1960–1990. However, after discounting an anomaly caused by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, a very slight reversal in the overall trend has been observed.[1]

It is thought to have been caused by an increase in particulates such as sulphate aerosols in the atmosphere due to human action. The switch from a "global dimming" trend to a "brightening" trend in 1990 happened just as global aerosol levels started to decline.

Global dimming has interfered with the hydrological cycle by reducing evaporation and may have reduced rainfall in some areas. Global dimming also creates a cooling effect that may have partially masked the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming.

Then there's the Global Dimming cause by Al Gore. It directly attacks the brain.

re: #78 zombie

Speaking of major volcano eruptions:

Past studies have shown that individual volcanic volcanos in the historical record (Krakatoa, and Mount Tambora, etc.) put more "pollution" and particulates in the atmosphere than all human activity combined throughout all of history. And that this pollution actually caused global cooling -- as a brand-new study confirms.

In other words:

Human activity is still dwarfed by natural events. It is sheer species-centric hubris to imagine we alone affect the plant.

Secondly, we still don't really know for sure if air pollution causes global warming or global cooling.

Conclusion: The Global Warming Gore cultists are delusional.

and the Great lakes that surround my state were carved out of the Earth by massive glaciers.

This area used to be under millions of tons of Ice.....year round.

and then came the 747 and the Hummer and coal mine.......and the ice meltted and the earth warmed and all was good

Actually can't the volcanic cloud cause global cooling? I'm confused.

How 'bout this:
Solar activity decreases, the planet's crust contracts due to cooling, cracks between plates allow more volcanic activity which in turn cools the planet even more. Voila ice age.

Yes, but the "air pollution" coming out of our smokestacks contains CO2 and particulate matter. What no one's ever studied is: Does the cooling caused by the particulate matter outweigh the [*possible*] warming caused by the CO2?

* Still no conclusive evidence as to whether a rise in CO2 levels is either a cause of or a consequence of warming temperatures.

Experts use Turner paintings to measure climate change
“The initial idea arose from the fact that we saw an increased reddening of colours in sunsets which followed large volcanic eruptions, particularly Krakatoa,” Mr Zerefos said.

[snip]

Turner was particularly important in the study because he was alive during three eruptions, including the so-called “year without summer” after the eruption of Mount Tambora, Indonesia in 1815, which spewed out so much dust and ash that it caused widespread famine. The other two eruptions were of the Babuyan Claro volcano in the Philippines in 1831 and the Cosiguina volcano in Nicaragua in 1835.

Here are some of his sunset paintings.

Like I said it should have been a condition set before they accepted bailout money. Obama is fumbling and things didn't happen in the right order. I'd support the same thing with auto bailouts; If they want stimulus money they need to renegotiate union contracts. Otherwise we end up paying for failing business models. They can always refuse bailout money if they want to but if they do there should be strings attached. It shouldn't be a blank check.

No idea about Tonga, but the entire Pacific Basin has an extensive tsunami warnimg network that's been there since the 1946 and 1960 Hilo Tsunamis. Hawai'i has an extensive network of sirens in place (like tornado sirens) for tsunami warnings.

Texas High School Staged Cage Fights Between Students, Documents Say

A Texas high school used cage fights to settle disputes among problem students, internal investigation documents obtained by The Dallas Morning News allege.

The principal and other staff at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas repeatedly put students in a steel utility cage located in a section of the boys basketball locker room to battle it out — with their bare fists and without head protection, the documents show.

Not sure that's true. But my point being, they are using "warning" to say conditions are right for a tsunami, not that radar or satellite or whatever has confirmed that there IS one. (With tornadoes, they say "watch" when conditions are right, "warning" when a tornado is confirmed.)

I'm still on the fence with this one. I think it should have been a condition for accepting the stimulus money from the beginning. If they wanted to accept the bailout then they negate the bonuses. If they want to keep the bonuses they could refuse the bailout.

Do I think the AIG bonus are appropriate. Not really. However what Congress is doing is Unconstitutional.

The Administration and the Feb both ruled the bonus contracts legal and binding.
The Dodd Amendment in the Stimulus package locked them in.

In the depths of my memory I seem to recall some article from a few years ago (sorry, no linky whatsoever!) where just this question was asked: in how far have the anti-pollution laws and clean-air acts contributed to global warming by reducing the presence of particulate matter? After all, looking at the graphs, there was a huge amount of industrial production from the 1850s for a good 100 years, without any huge corresponding increase in global remperatures ...

It also helps explain why so many banks are so worried about staying in TARP and looking for an out - they want to get out from the clutches of TARP and government interference.

There was a French couple who were, IIRC, killed in the Pinatubo eruption, who I once saw in a documentary. The husband was talking about how much he wanted to figure out how to build a canoe he could take out on lava flow so he could get instruments right in there. His wife was nodding and beaming as he discussed this idea.

I think I remember something about that, they ended up getting caught in the pyroclastic blow from the volcano. You have to be somewhat crazy to consider getting near something like that.

The bill language provides that only those companies receiving $5 billion or more in TARP, Fannie and Freddie, and affiliated companies and parnterhips of same, are hit by this; and the employees receiving a threshold level get whacked. It's going to be a bloodbath.

It also helps explain why so many banks are so worried about staying in TARP and looking for an out - they want to get out from the clutches of TARP and government interference.

Does life mirror art or does art mirror life?

In either case, assuming that a painting provides an accurate measurement of anything except the composition of the pigments is pretty silly.

True - but the sunsets were of such outstanding colours, due to the particulate matter, that not just Turner was drawn to paint them again and again.

Once this matter had susided, it was back to the normal, watery gentle sunsets.
The difference would certainly have attracted the notice of those, like artists, who had eyes to see.
I think that was the point of that study.

re: #222 zombie

I was trying to point this out yesterday. First of all, you can't pass a retroactive tax; and secondly, you can't target individuals with a tax. Totally illegal.

They're just trying to cover up for the fact that the Dems enabled the bonuses to begin with (see: Dodd and co., earlier thread). Personally, I think that is a HUGE story: Why would the Dems do that, if not for backroom deals? Bribery, back-scratching, tips, perks -- who knows?

Hi zombie! While I sure agree with your post, it does appear that retroactive tax legislation is legal - at least at this point. It was upheld by the Supreme Court in United States v Carlton (1994). In part, the decision said:

This Court repeatedly has upheld retroactive tax legislation against a due process challenge. See, e. g., United States v. Hemme, 476 U.S. 558 (1986); United States v. Darusmont, 449 U.S. 292 (1981); Welch v. Henry, 305 U.S. 134 (1938); United States v. Hudson, 299 U.S. 498 (1937); Milliken v. United States, 283 U.S. 15 (1931); Cooper v. United States, 280 U.S. 409 (1930).

And:

The due process standard to be applied to tax statutes with retroactive effect, therefore, is the same as that generally applicable to retroactive economic legislation:

"Provided that the retroactive application of a statute is supported by a legitimate legislative purpose furthered by rational means, judgments about the wisdom of such legislation remain within the exclusive province of the legislative and executive branches . . . .

Well, I must say I'm enjoying this as much as anyone, the Democrats shooting at each other after all of them had pretended that this provision was immaculately conceived. But the whole afternoon today, the morning and afternoon of the interrogation of the head of AIG was Congress at its absolute demagogic worst.

I mean, let me count the ways. Here's a guy who comes out of retirement to work for a dollar a year, who is not even in AIG at the time of the take over by the government, who's being attacked by members of Congress earning $175,000 a year, who have just received in January a raise of $4,700.

Secondly, the Democrats are the ones who passed the stimulus package, which had this provision in it. And they had told us that the stimulus was so important for saving the economy that it had to be rushed into law before Presidents' Day, of course, leaving no one with any time to read it. So now they wake up. They read the bill that they had passed and begin excoriating AIG and others.

His history of addiction means that a chemical imbalance isn't out of the question. He doesn't seem overtly stupid. Does he know what he's doing? It's all very interesting to me.

* * **
Beck is a little performance-artsy; like Meghan McCain, some of his musings might be best said in the privacy of his home among friends or family.

Maybe Beck thinks its therapeutic to speculate about what's happening out loud. That is tv in our age.

I enjoyed when he played the old USSR theme song and addresses his audience sarcastically as Comrades--because many Americans apparently know NOTHING about the old USSR and how totalitarians come to power & misuse it.

So I'm glad Glenn Beck knows some history and can make cogent parallels between Obama and Stalinist leaders.

There is no legitimate legislative purpose to this tax, other than to garner positive headlines for your political party. And it's not rational at all -- just emotion-based. So, this particular retroactive tax failed to meet the standards established in that ruling. Hence, I repeat: I still think it's illegal.

I posted this is another thread just as it died:

Most of these bonuses were retention bonuses paid to employees who agreed to stay in what they knew were dead end jobs to wind down and close out parts of AIG. It was to the benefit of AIG (and the taxpayers) to keep those people who knew what was going on. Without the bonus money most of these people would have walked and went looking for new jobs sooner which would have been to their advantage.

They agreed to do a job for a offered amount of money. That is called a contract. The fact that these people (who were not responsible for the AIG meltdown) are now going to be punished by the government for political purposes runs counter to every concept of fairness and decency.

Quite possibly the most disgusting outrageous statement ever uttered by American President.

His analogy doesn't even make sense. Under that theory, we should shoot the banks before they can blow up and injure more innocents.

Under the impeccable logic that there are people is Gaza (never mind what the savages are doing and the rockets they are firing) any Israel defense is a war crime.

U.N. rights envoy sees Israeli war crimes in Gaza

GENEVA, March 19 (Reuters) - A United Nations human rights investigator said on Thursday that Israel's massive military assault on densely populated Gaza appeared to constitute a grave war crime.

Richard Falk, U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, said the Geneva Conventions required warring forces to distinguish between military targets and surrounding civilians.

"If it is not possible to do so, then launching the attacks is inherently unlawful and would seem to constitute a war crime of the greatest magnitude under international law," Falk said.

re: #319 subsailor68

Hi jcm! Great post. I guess my question is: does this tax interfere with the contract process? What I mean is: they didn't alter the contracts - the folks got the money. What they did was change the "tax" percentage, not negate the contracts.

(Really insidious either way, I grant ya!)

It amounts to a Bill of Attainder.

A bill of attainder (also known as an act or writ of attainder) is an act of legislature declaring a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishing them without benefit of a trial. Bills of attainder are forbidden by Article I, section 9, clause 3 of the United States Constitution.

Taxing the bonuses is a neat side step of actually setting aside the contract. However the precedent it sets is horrific.

I know a guy who bought 1000 share of Microsoft at IPO, for $21,000. With stock splits that is now 512,000 shares worth over $8 million.

Is that an obscene profit? Under this precedent, congress could decide to take 90%.

His audience eats that stuff up just like the LLL did with the historical parallels between Bush and the Nazis. It's a cheap gimmick and anyone can do it. It's not my cup of tea but there's a big audience for it out there.

The difference is that there were no parallels between Bush and the Nazi's.
There are parallels with what's been going on since the 20th of January and the totalitarians he's comparing them to. And it is necessary to point out those parallels to what is a historically illiterate population. Made illiterate deliberately by the Democrats who have a stranglehold on the American education system.

re: #360 freetoken

Who is they? I never saw one attribution of causing the 2004 quake, in any of the science/environmental sources that I read.

Here you go, Freetoken. This went around for a bit before someone woke up and contradicted it.

The cause of Tsunami is earth’s melting of permafrost in artic circle due to global warming

According to some Indian scientists, the melting of permafrost has far reaching effects on earth’s crust. The tectonic plates are susceptible to forces on different parts of the world including the Artic and Antarctic regions. The new theory says if the crust of the earth is imbalanced due to tremendous effect of global warming and melting of permafrost.

According to these scientists we may be experiencing similar phenomenon where all on a sudden tectonic movements devastate the world.

The tsunami that happened was caused by an earthquake along a 600 mile fault line that got displaced. That is not common. It really never happened in recent history of the world.

Interestingly, the Tsunami traveled westwards at 500 miles per hour and did not traverse in the south with that kind of high velocity. According to the scientific analysts, that is another sign that this was caused by melting of permafrost in the Artic.

It took a few days before this misinformation was corrected, but the remains are still found on the internet.

Here's a bit more on the subject:

www.worldclimatereport.com...]>Tsunamis and Global Warming: Who would dare connect them?

Shortly after the devastating tsunami struck southeast Asia on December 26, 2004, there were several instances where mentions of tsunamis made their way into global warming stories. Whether this conflation was intentional or not has been subject to debate. Most recently in a breathless article written for Mother Jones Magazine, envirojournalist Bill McKibben goes so far as to make the case that the connection between global warming and tsunamis was fabricated by “the usual suspects” in order to take pot shots at the environmental community. McKibben claims that the Wall Street Journal brought the issue to the forefront by drawing a connection where no connection existed in citing two activists who were quoted in the UK’s Independent about an increase in global catastrophes in general but not specifically linking global warming and the tsunami.

Obviously, there is no connection between rising air temperatures and earthquake-spawned tsunamis. To suggest such a relation, even overtly, is a shameful mischaracterization of science in an effort to push an alarmist global warming agenda. To this, I think that McKibben and I can agree. However, I strongly disagree with McKibben that this conflation has never been made.

As a further example, I present below, text taken directly from the website of the Public Broadcasting System in a section of their website called “National Geographic’s Strange Days on the Planet Earth.” The title of the article is “6 Reasons Why You Should Care.”

The NG article the goes on the list tsunamis as a weather-related event.

There were other examples on CNN and the like that did not get recorded.

I got this in an email from UFO TOFU

A Page From History

Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 to December 19, 1968) , leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America, said this in a 1944 speech:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."

Killgore, when you add the additional 90% tax on those bonuses, they're going to be paying well over 100% on them. How would you like it if you contracted for a retension bonus and the gvmt came in and told you they were going to take 90% in federal taxes off the top plus you have to worry about paying the state, county, local and whatever taxes on it.

Lottery winners may actually exceed 50% of their gross in taxes because of the windfall taxes which can sometimes apply and you have state and federal to pay plus unforseen jump in tax bracket (if previous tax bracket was 15% and all of a sudden you're in the 40% range)

AN SALVADOR, El Salvador – A charismatic former TV journalist promised to build strong ties with President Barack Obama and promote investor confidence Monday as he took El Salvador into uncharted territory by being elected its first leftist president.

Behind Mauricio Funes is a party of former Marxist guerrillas that fought to overthrow U.S.-backed governments in the 1980s and whose rise to power has raised fears of a communist regime in the war-scarred Central American country.

No. It doesn't cover nearly every bank. Does it cover many major banks? Yes. Does it cover all? Nope. Nearly all? Nope.

Here's one such list of banks - pointing out only those receiving $5 billion or more as being hit by this:

Citigroup
CITIGROUP INC
$2.60
Change: -0.48 - -15.58%
as of 3/19/2009 4:01pm
Inc. (New York) — $25 billion

JPMorgan Chase
JP MORGAN CHASE C
$24.95
Change: -2.16 - -7.97%
as of 3/19/2009 4:00pm
& Co. (New York) - $25 billion

Wells FargoLoading... & Co. (San Francisco) — $25 billion

Bank of America Corp. (Charlotte, N.C.) — $15 billion

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (New York) — $10 billion

Merrill Lynch & Co. (New York) — $10 billion

Morgan Stanley (New York) — $10 billion

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. (Pittsburgh) — $7.7 billion

US Bancorp (Minneapolis) — $6.6 billion

Of course, the threshold level could change. And this represents just the banks - not AIG. It would also quite likely be expected to hit the automakers as well.

I don't have much sympathy for them either, but there are contracts, and they should be honored. This Congress and this Administration are working to abrogate contract law in one fell swoop, and undermine the faith in the system. That's not good.

This move also is unsound on economic terms - because those bonuses will go to prop up the local economy in ways that the so called stimulus package never could.

Bill of Attainder - unconstitutional
Ex Post Facto Laws - unconstitutional (same clause in the Constitution)
Retroactive Tax Legislation - constitutional, with provisions, at least for now
Contract Law - inviolate, with provisions - at least until a few hours ago.

Congress has just decided they can decide if that contract is excessive and tax you 90% of $X.

You forgot to add: Not just that they can decide that the amount, in general, is excessive. Rather, they can decide it's excessive because it's Killgore Trout, specifically, and he's politcally unpopular at the moment.

But Killgore's not bothered by that, I guess.

It is unconstitutional, a Bill of Attainder. Not a problem for BHO though, he finds the Constituion lacking since it says nothing about "Economic Justice", o you know wealth redistribution.

re: #129 zombie

They've made the switch from "Global Warming" to "climate change" in preparation of reversing everything and claiming in the future that human activity is cooling the planet, not warming it, as new studies are starting to show.

"Hey, we said it was 'climate change'! We just didn't say in which direction!"

You mean, they'll go back to the exact same thing they were saying in the 70s. For a group of people that were supposed to be buried under glaciers by now, these nuts sure are active and able to change their stories.

I remember working on a NASA contract and one of the posters in the building was Pinatubo exploding. The data sheet with it noted that that single eruption emitted more CO2 than all automobiles had in history, IIRC. The resulting climate change was minimal and the lingering effects lasted about 2 years. Even most of that was due to the particulate matter ejected, not the so-called greenhouse gases.

That fact alone makes me question just how much impact any man-made activity has on the climate. If CO2 was so important, that big of a release should have had a major, prolonged impact.

Long OT post, hope I'm forgiven.

Last night I went to a Smith Family Foundation debate on Afghanistan. The panel were as follows: Max Boot, Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations, Larry Goodson, Professor, U.S. Army War College, Jacob Hornberger, President, Future of Freedom Foundation, and Christopher Preble, Director of Foreign Policy Studies, CATO Institute. That meant one pro-interventionist Boot, one pro-intervention big footprint traditionalist Goodson, one isolationist paleo-libertarian Hornberger, and one small footprint internationalist libertarian Preble. I found Hornberger's sneers about Neocons borderline anti-Semitic and the fact that he refused to or was not qualified to discuss the strategic issues as opposed to chanting we killed their children so they hate us, depressing. After I talked with an Afghan architect who assured me that few people take the religion seriously as a reason for violence and who wants to build a museum in Bamiyan where the statues of Buddha were destroyed by the Taliban. Good luck to him. The libertarian expressions of concern for the suffering of foreigners was so patently false as to distasteful. Hornberger did get Boot to admit to being an imperialist. My subsequent letter to Goodson follows, a similar letter went to Boot who replied, "Thanks for coming last night and for raising a number of thoughtful points to which, alas, I have no good answer."

Dear Professor Goodson,

It was good to meet you at last night's debate. My concern was about the integrity of our logistical lines into Afghanistan if Pakistan implodes. From what you said I got the distinct feeling that the administration intends to solve that problem by making a deal with Iran. Understandably that is tempting since the Chinese already built a road and it spares the expense of building and guarding a parallel route through the Pakistani region of Baluchistan. My suspicion is that the Iranian deal can only spell disaster as the endangered parties (Israel and the Gulf states) react in their own interests. It seems to be the spirit in Washington to attack our friends and appease our enemies. Perhaps we shall see, in the same spirit, a deal to appease China at the expense of Tibet and India, to appease Russia at the expense of Eastern Europe and to appease Syria at the expense of Lebanon. Eventually some of these betrayals will conflict with each other. When I asked if you think that Israel will go quietly into the night or if Iran and Russia could be trusted to keep a deal (Did you really propose we trust 60-80,000 Americans to a supply line that depends on fuel brought in from the North at Putin's sufferance?) you he noted the new Israeli government and said "We shall see." Given the stakes involved, and considering how we neglected to plan sufficiently for the second stage when we committed to Iraq in '03, we should plan this operation a little more thoroughly. It is a given that all plans have to be changed, Rumsfeld was blind-sided by France getting Turkey to lock out the 4th I.D. Still we should at least try to ensure a more stable source of logistics before committing to a larger operation, worthy as the goal appears to me.

My concern is that we are facing a perfect storm in which a common interest is being seen by paleo-social conservatives, libertarians, liberal global institutionalists and cynical realists. All of them are prone to manipulation by foreign money interests more dangerous and less accountable then the mythical Israel lobby. This touches me personally as my thesis advisor was a man who always treated me with courtesy, John Mearsheimer.

Sincerely,

xxxxx

I heard about this supernova on Stardate this morning:

...anyone who was looking into the constellation Bootes one year ago would have seen a completely different sort of flash -- one that emitted its light long before Earth was born.

The flash was a gamma-ray burst. It marked the titanic explosion of a star that was much heavier than the Sun. The star could no longer produce energy in its core, so the core collapsed to form a black hole. The outer layers exploded with tremendous force, creating a supernova. This explosion was so powerful that, for about 30 seconds, it was bright enough to see with the unaided eye.

The star's destruction was also accompanied by "beams" of gamma rays. Powerful magnetic fields directed the beams into space from the star's poles. Earth lined up directly along one of those beams, which flashed us with gamma rays like a cosmic headlight -- a beam that was detected by an orbiting satellite.

The star's death was the brightest object ever detected. For a few seconds, it outshone every other star in the universe combined....

It reminded me of the Obama Administration.

Close, my friend, but you do not win either a coconut or a lollipop. As I noted a few days back, the ever-vigilant Sy Hersh broke the existence of roving Cheney assassination squads operating out of the White House.

Obviously tiring of picking 'em off one at a time, Cheney has decided to go into the wholesale business, killing 'em by their millions.

I, for one, never believed in Cheney assassin squads. Anyone who shoots his own lawyer himself rather than farm the job out is not going to let others have all the fun. He is going to do his own wet work.

I'm guessing they were a little more... well, angular?

The point is, Turner is not Vermeer, he was (deliberately) not a realistic painter.

True - Turner went for the effect of light on what he saw, the objects wer incidental.
Here is a proper drawing of one of the locomotives of that time.

I think Turners pictures are so amazing because the effects of light on the different colours of the material world are so difficult to catch.
The Impressionists ried a different approach, also to great effect - as your first link showed!

What's not to like about that reasoning (I'm not going any further with that line)?

Since I'm being contrarian today I'll propose a very unconservative solution....
1) Reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act. 2) Break up the banks (commercial, retail, investment, etc) with some sort of anti-monopoly regulation. That way if this happens in the future our economy won't hinge on a handful of banking giants. Those with impossible business models can be allowed to fail without gutting the economy. The car companies have been riding the same gravy train for decades. They know we will always bail them out because we have to in order to save the economy. After this current crisis passes it will repeat in another 20-30 years because the banks have learned that they don't need to run a functional business model. The new model will be milking the tax payers.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the money given to AIG to take care of business needs, like paying off creditors, in order to prevent them failing?

There is truth to what you say, but on the whole the Republicans haven't stepped up to the plate. They were voted in as a Revolution in 1994, and they always acted like they were vaugely embarrassed by that. Their primary attraction has been that they suck less badly than the Democrats do, and that is true, but "We suck less" isn't going to win elections over the long haul.

If they had done what we voted them in to do in 1994, the Democrats would be a bad memory now.

* * *
First of all, neither all of today's voters, nor all of today's Republicans in Congress were around in 1994. As you well know, the leader of that 94 revolution, Newt Gingrich, has been out of office for a long long time.

Republicans are not a borg, they don't vote in lockstep, and they've lost two big elections in a row. So they are scrambling to regroup.

However, I think "We Suck Less" is a motto that could serve as a starting point for Republicans, as Americans get sick of the Democrat Giant Suction machine.

597 Diamond Bullet  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 1:59:22pm

As it's often said, the power to tax is the power to destroy. Watching Obama and Congress spew out gigantic spending bills without even reading them was one thing, but watching them spew out individually specific tax bills without reading the Constitution is something else entirely. If this thing somehow passes Constitutional muster in a federal court, no one will ever be secure in their possessions again. If you do or say something that fails to meet the approval of our liberal overlords, or triggers their manufactured outrage (even retroactively, like that time you bought a regular car in 2004 when you "should" have bought a hybrid), you can be taxed into oblivion. AIG executives are singularly unsympathetic, but that is the entire point of living in a nation of laws, rather than one ruled by the whims of the mob. They entered into legal contracts with AIG, and those contracts should be upheld, regardless of how politically inconvenient they suddenly are for our incompetent "leaders". There's a reason why sales of ammo and 'Atlas Shrugged' are way up -- the looters are here, and I'm not talking about AIG.

That's the thing, conservatives believe in consequences for actions. AIG was run into the ground, if it was allowed to go into Ch. 11, then the bankruptcy judge could have legally rewritten the contracts.

The consequence of AIG was removed by Congress and the Administration.
The consequence of that was the contracts are legal and binding.
Now Congress and the Administration are trying to avoided the consequences of that action.

re: #68 Honorary Yooper

Of course with a Yellowstone type eruption we're talking mass casualty event. Bye-bye, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nebraska. Crop failures across the world. Hundreds of millions, or maybe most of us, dead of respiratory problems and famine. Earthquake damage in Chicago and Los Angeles. Seattle reduced to rubble.

Krakatoa had a crater less than 100 meters across, judging from the drawing reproduced in the Wikipedia article on the Krakatoa eruption. The blast was the equivalent of about 200 megatons. For comparison, Yellowstone is 50 000 meters across.

Scaling to crater size, a Yellowstone event could have an explosive yield of 50 million megatons. Apocalyptic damage.

re: #614 Kenneth

From your linky:

"There are still innocent people there," Lawrence B. Wilkerson, a Republican who was chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, told The Associated Press. "Some have been there six or seven years."

Great! Does Lawrence B. Wilkerson know which ones are innocent? Were they any of the more than 60 released detainees who returned to jihad? Do the innocent ones have a special secret handshake to tell them apart from the bad ones? How exactly does Lawrence B. Wilkerson know what he's talking about?

They're easy to pick out. They're the elderly Japanese grandmothers that we scooped up in our Nazi dragnet.......
//////// Advice to Wilkerson - If you have nothing helpful to add, then STFU - you ignorant slut.

///I guess that kinda proves she's stupid, passing up all that free money!

Damn, I can so see that actual arguement being made.

re: #443 Iron Fist

It depends on what kind of results you are aiming for. Stalin wanted famine, and famine he got. What does Obama want? If he wants a growing, thriving free-market economy then, yes, slavery is a bad tool for his purposes.

You'll have a hard time convincing me that that is what he really wants.

I think he'd love for it to occur somehow before 2010 but after Stimulus IV--The Return of Stimulus gets written and passed.

Good luck with that, though. The causal connection is not what he thinks it is.

re: #574 CyanSnowHawk

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the money given to AIG to take care of business needs, like paying off creditors, in order to prevent them failing?

That is what anyone with half a brain would have assumed.

Leave her alone - she isn't 'knitting-knitting', ya know.

Thanks for your support.
Unlike moi, Madame Defarge was a she, and I don't know how to knit.
