An ordinary human being, with a personal conscience, personally answering for something to somebody and personally and directly taking responsibility, seems to be receding farther and farther from the realm of politics. Politicians seem to turn into puppets that only look human and move in a giant, rather inhuman theatre; they appear to become merely cogs in a huge machine, objects of a major civilizational automatism which has gotten out of control and for which nobody is responsible.

The sluggish and unsteady response to the uproar over AIG bonuses highlights a larger problem of his White House: Obama’s surprisingly uneven campaign to educate the public about the economic crisis and convince the public that he is in command of circumstances.

That's because he's still educating himself about it.

In case not everyone has seen this one.

At his town hall meeting in Costa Mesa, Calif., Wednesday evening, President Obama compared embattled insurer AIG and other large failing banks to a suicide bomber.

"A lot of people say, 'Well, why not just let the banks fail?'" the president said. "'Why don't we just let them fail, let them go bankrupt, what's the problem?'"

SNIP

Here's the problem," Mr. Obama said, "It's almost like they've got -- they've got a bomb strapped to them and they've got their hand on the trigger. You don't want them to blow up. But you've got to kind of talk them, ease that finger off the trigger."

May I urge you to go to Aussie Dave's blog - scroll to 3.30pm, and follow his links to the story splashed in Haaretz an other israeli papers about investigations showing how badly IDF soldiers were behaving during Operation Cast Lead.
The Muqata has this to say:
'Fast forward to a few minutes ago. Channel 2 TV Army correspondent Roni Daniel stated at 6:30 PM this evening, that he personally tracked down one of the soldiers interviewed for the Haaretz article. Apparently the soldier's testimony to Haaretz wasn't based on anything he personally saw or witnessed, rather based on rumors and hearsay he heard (and the soldier wasn't even in Gaza!)
Truth is rarely important to Haaretz, as long as it can bash the IDF, Israel, settlers, religious Jews, or anyone not agreeing with them. As a result of their propaganda article, the entire planet picked up on their "expose" and the poison keeps propagating around the world...'

And there is another refutation here;
IDF soldiers refute claims of immoral conduct in Gaza
quoted by Aussie Dave.

Be prepared - this will appear in your papers and on your TVs - its lies and exaggerations.

Unless I misheard him, he said "Blame" me. I may have actually interpreted his remark that way. At any rate he definitely said that he was innocent, but willing to in so many words be the pinata.

96 Honorary Yooper  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 2:39:52pm

Obama's an idiot in more ways than that:

Obama repeats inaccurate jab on Model T's mileage

Last month, Obama mistakenly called the automobile an American invention, surprising the Germans who claim that mantle. And in a speech in California today, Obama revived an inaccurate jab against the industry that Ford Motor Co.’s original Model T burned less fuel than modern sport utility vehicles.

That line about the Model T, a version of which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used during her presidential bid, can be traced to a 2003 Sierra Club ad campaign that said the Model T could go 25 miles on a gallon of gasoline. Earlier references put the Model T’s mileage at 20 to 25 m.p.g.

That’s certainly better than the 18.7 m.p.g. real-world average of SUVs sold in 2008, according to federal statistics.

But according to Ford the first Model Ts built in 1908 could go 13 to 21 miles on a gallon, depending on the particular variation. The automaker and Model T clubs say typical Tin Lizzies averaged 15 m.p.g.

What remains unclear is how it makes sense to compare a fabric-roofed, four-seat car to a seven-passenger truck stuffed with high-tech accoutrements.

Those first Model Ts weighed about 1,200 pounds, lacked windows, rode on wood wheels and could ease up to a top speed of 45 miles per hour. A modern SUV tips the scales at 4,600 pounds, hits a top speed of 140 m.p.h. and has to meet a bevy of laws for crashworthiness.

When adjusted for their massive differences in weight using the government’s formulas, today’s typical SUV is about five times more efficient than the Model T.

This is the complete idiot we elected as president. I want a refund.

So Obama calls the AIG executives "suicide bombers". He really is an idiot. Why is it that socialists can equate monetary issues with cold blooded murder? While giving any money to AIG makes me want to puke, the people who got bonuses aren't at fault here.

Besides, don't the liberals empathize with suicide bombers? The only way AIG is like suicide bombers is that both are getting massive cash infusions from our tax revenues.

Liberal Commentators Disappointed with, GOP Pounces Upon White House Aides' Remarks on AIG Bonuses

Recent comments by two senior White House aides downplaying how much voters care about the AIG bonuses scandal have disappointed liberal commentators otherwise supportive of President Obama.

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was recently quoted in the New York Times saying that as angry President Obama is about AIG, “his main priority is getting the financial system stabilized, and he believes this is a big distraction in that effort.”

In today's Washington Post, senior adviser David Axelrod is quoted saying, "People are not sitting around their kitchen tables thinking about AIG. They are thinking about their own jobs.” The Post described "the bonuses were a distraction from what senior aides called the main focus: getting the economy working and people back to work."

These comments progressive columnist David Sirota did not dig.

"Look, I get that nobody in Establishment Washington genuinely cares that taxpayers are being ripped off, and I get that the super-wealthy political class from millionaire investment banker Emanuel to millionaire consultant Axelrod to millionaire banker Tim Geithner gives much of a s--- that our taxpayer dollars are being used to make new millionaires on Wall Street," Sirota writes today. "But their boss, President Obama, is right: A huge majority of Americans, most of whom are not millionaires, are really angry and has a right to be angry. And we're not talking sorta angry, we're talking about Gallup's new poll showing a whopping 84% of Americans saying they are 'outraged' or 'bothered' by the AIG mess. The only question, then, is why the president is letting his aides contradict him and disparage the majority of the country?"

I won't post it all, but if you like watching liberals eat their own then read it in its entirety.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson abolishes capital punishment

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gov. Bill Richardson, who has supported capital punishment, signed legislation to repeal New Mexico’s death penalty, calling it the "most difficult decision in my political life."
The new law replaces lethal injection with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The repeal takes effect on July 1, and applies only to crimes committed after that date.

"Regardless of my personal opinion about the death penalty, I do not have confidence in the criminal justice system as it currently operates to be the final arbiter when it comes to who lives and who dies for their crime," Richardson said.

Braintree RMV worker allegedly took bribes for issuing licenses

A 48-year-old Brockton woman who worked at the Braintree branch of the Registry of Motor Vehicles was arrested today for allegedly taking bribes to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, federal and state law enforcement officials said.

Janice Washington faces federal identity theft charges, the officials said in a statement. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine, the officials said.

Washington was identified after a six-month investigation, said the officials from the US attorney's office, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, US Social Security Administration, and Massachusetts State Police.

Compared to Teh 0ne, Clinton is a class act.

Sad, but true.

The bottom line is that President Clinton was actually persuasive. He had that charm thing, and he could speak to a person or an audience in a persuasive way. Even as I knew I disagreed on something, I found myself admiring his presentation. And we all know that he used that ability for personal, as well as public reasons. He was no fool, either - he was a Rhodes Scholar. He could think on his feet.

To me, President Obama has none of that. Not only are his actual words meaningless - they are obviously being read, and when they're not, they are the ramblings of a man who obviously cannot think on his feet.

Plus, he has that arrogant and evasive thing going. No offense to men, but as a woman, this set off all sorts of alarms for me, because men like that instantly go on my "do not trust" list forever. I always see the time he all but patted a woman reporter ont he head dismissively, saying "later, sweety," and then blowing her off. She was visibly angry, and who can blame her?

Grrrrr!

The New York Times published an op-ed last year by a kindergarten teacher who congratulates herself for being a brilliant multiculturalist in the classroom. The crux of the op-ed is this anecdote:

I was moving around the classroom checking students’ writing when a question popped up out of nowhere. One of my American students, David, called out, “Ms. Shunnarah, can an elephant be a god?”

...I remembered from my studies of Hinduism in college that there is a religious entity known as Ganesh, who takes the form of an elephant....

This information about Ganesh came to me quickly and I am glad that it did, because I could have carelessly dismissed David’s comment as silly. Instead, I told him yes, and described Ganesh and his place in the Hindu religion. After I said this, I noticed that one of my students from India, Abhra, pulled out his own drawings of Ganesh from his backpack. He had been discussing his beliefs with David, when David had called out the question. This small bit of knowledge I had retained turned out to be important. After my response, Abhra smiled; his religious beliefs and identity were acknowledged. ...

Later Abhra’s mother came to me and said that I had made her son happy because I knew about Ganesh....What if I had responded from my own personal biases and religious perspective? What would have been the outcome for my student Abhra? Would he have been ashamed? Would he have kept his pictures hidden, damaging his sense of self?

Needless to say, most of the comments lavish praise on the teacher for being so sensitive.

I was so incensed that I took the rare step of actually submitting a comment of my own. Since I doubt it will ever see the light of day (NYTimes comments are moderated), I'll post it here:

------------

Why were you so cruel to your student? You congratulate yourself for improving the self-esteem of the Hindu student, but when you told the "American" (presumably Christian) student that elephants could be gods, did it ever even occur to you that you were destroying HIS self-esteem, and turning HIS world upside-down? No, apparently this did not occur to you, because attending to the feelings of and supporting the worldview of the non-Western students is paramount in your philosophy. It's more important to crush the beliefs of the Americans than it is to be even-handed. For all you know, you just ruined that little Christian boy's life: now he doubts his parents, because he no longer can trust what they say is true. If they lied about God, then they can lie about anything.

It would have been equally valid, and equally one-sided, to tell the Hindu boy that No, elephants cannot be Gods. But you didn't do that. Yet you did the mirror image, which is just as bad. And by taking sides, you gave your imprimatur to Hinduism, while rejecting monotheism. In your quest to be multicultural, you ended up taking sides anyway. It sickens me to see your overwhelming concern for the feelings of one of your students (the Hindu), and a complete unconscious lack of concern for the other student, who is just roadkill on your superhighway to a multicultural utopia.

As one of the other commenters here noted, saying to a Muslim that there are other gods besides Allah would rank as a capital offense in some countries; and informing the monotheist children -- Christian, Muslim, Jewish -- that it is a FACT that elephants can be gods, is likely to be extremely upsetting to them. Despite your fantasies, there is no middle ground on this issue, and you blundered spectacularly by supporting one religious viewpoint over the others. Stop patting yourself on the back for one moment to see the damage you've done, and probably do every single day of the year when you force all of your students through the multicultural sieve.

Clinton's dereliction of duty and cowardice in the face of repeated acts of war against our country, only strengthened Bin Laden, the Taliban which butchered women in Afghanistan and grew Al Qaeda into a real military threat: 9/11/2001.

Well said, all of it. Clinton also had that "all-American" thing going for him, even thought we may have hated his politics and shennanigans, he was one of us.

After what seemed like a very long wait, the ER Doctor appeared, wearing his
scrubs and a long face. Sadly, he said, "I'm afraid he is brain-dead, but
his heart is still beating."

"Oh, Dear God," cried his wife, her hands clasped against her cheeks with
shock! "We've never had a Democrat in the family before!"

LOL...that was great....

I'd say that was a compliment. The man had nothing if not incredible stamina and powers of persuasion, at least in some quarters. And then, of course, there's his penis.

A Rasputin penis thread - is that a first?

Yeah, I google him to see why it was supposed to be a put down. It remains a mystery to me.

Calling the shots for the Romanovs (Charles)? I dunno. I wouldn't want to try to enter their deranged minds... If so it's pretty stupid.

That's pretty sad. When people find out where I work, they ask for investment advice, which I can't give them. I direct them to our Web site, though. Of course, my company is careful, conservative, and has no debt. In times like this, people appreciate that.

Murtha defends statement

/Congress is chock full of criminals that really need to go to jail

I disagree.

Putting Congresscritters in with the general prison population would be unbelievably harmful to the rest of the convicts.

Especially the thieves. Imagine how damaging to their self-esteem, to be shown just how third-rate that their piddling little efforts had been, when compared to a real thief.

No, if ever there is to be any hope of rehabilitation and reintegration into society, congresscritters must never be allowed close to relatively Innocent convicts.

re: #404 zombie

That's what makes me so angry. I know this teacher is simply a prototype for the way that almost ALL teachers are these days. Every minute of every day, every child in American is being brainwashed. We've become so complacent about this extremely depressing fact.

It can't even accurately be called "multi-culturalism". It's Eastern mysticism, purely and simply.

The purveyors of the "multi-culti" mindset reject Western culture completely, hence, their claim to be "multicultural" is itself a lie. Western culture is based on thiought, logic, and above all reason. The "multi-culti" crowd rejects all of these, preferring a system that requires neither judgment or even actual capacity for reason. Their preference for the mystical point of view is conditioned by the fact that it does not require rational thought, or indeed any thought at all. Instead, it is operated and motivated purely by "feelings"- by emotional reactions at a visceral level, the (if the Lizard Legion will pardon my pointing it out) hindbrain or "R (for "Reptile")- Complex" at work, the most primitive part of our brains. All the R-complex cares about is endorphin release; hence the "progressive" mantra, "If it feels good, do it."

People like this teacher want to "feel good" about themselves. Well, most people do, but the majority of us are mature enough to realize that sometimes, reality will require us to face facts we'd rather not. The "progressives" reject this- unpleasant facts must be ignored, and anyone who insists that they must be faced must be driven out- so they can keep feeling "good about themselves". No matter what.

The result?

Their non-material, non-profit worlds are realms where rivers run with milk and coffee, where wine spurts from rocks at their command, where pastry drops on them from clouds at the price of opening their mouths. On this material, profit-chasing earth, an enormous investment of virtue- of intelligence, integrity, energy, skill- is required to construct a railroad to carry them the distance of one mile; in their non-material, non-profit world, they travel from planet to planet at the cost of a wish. If an honest person asks them "How?"-- they answer with righteous scorn that a 'how' is the concept of vulgar realists; the concept of superior spirits is 'Somehow'. On this earth restricted by matter and profit, rewards are achieved by thought; in a world set free of such restriction, rewards are achieved by wishing.

-John Galt, in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

These are people who genuinely "feel" that their beliefs condition reality. And when reality does not agree, they cast blame on it. It is the logic of a two-year-old who throws a tantrum whenever he doesn't get his way. One can only imagine this teacher's reaction if the little boy had said that he didn't believe that elephants could be deities. That would have been apostasy, by the "logic" she follows- because that would be a decidedly Western, materialistic, and non-mystical point of view.

Which is why arguing with a multiculturalist, on the basis of logic, is a waste of time. Sorry to state, but you, and the multiculturalist, are not even speaking the same language. And they reject the one you speak as wrong, and even dishonest- because it doesn't always let them "feel good" about themselves.

Excellent summation and analysis. I've always thought of these bastards as dangerous 5 year olds. Dangerous, because unlike a 5 year old who will get a swat if he throws a tantrum, these bastards actually are now in charge of things that have a real world impact on our lives and their judgment can't be trusted anymore than a 5 year olds.
Multi-culti liberalism is a lazy, anti-intellectual world view. And they call us stupid. Sheesh.

Plugs Biden
Little Timmy Geithner
Peter Orszag

I say it's a tie between Orszag and Gibbs. Orszag looks like the adult version of the kid in the Blackberry Curve commercial who is freed from the locker by the hall monitor. And Gibbs is about as dumb as a rock. Every time he does a briefing, the Dow Jones goes steadily downward until he shuts his trap.

Politicians seem to turn into puppets that only look human and move in a giant, rather inhuman theatre; they appear to become merely cogs in a huge machine, objects of a major civilizational automatism which has gotten out of control and for which nobody is responsible.

Václav Havel, whose quote appears as the subject of this open thread, was a real inspiration for me, giving me me new hope during a hard patch. I know that the word "hope" has recently taken on a new, sarcastic connotation, but during that bad time, a friend arranged for me to receive a copy of Havel's "Speech on Hope" from the man himself.

Read it, your time will not be wasted.
